LETTER FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR DEAR FRIENDS,

 ROBERT HUPP. PHOTO: BRENNA MERRITT.

The theme of Talley’s Folly is hope— hope for this seemingly mismatched couple, hope for a seemingly divided country. Set against the backdrop of a national crisis, Talley’s Folly doesn’t promise a happy ending, but it does offer the promise of a journey worth taking. Sally and Matt come from opposite sides of the world; they are divided by faith, geography, custom, and family. And it is our good fortune to watch their struggle unfold on a warm summer night in the shelter of a fading folly. It is a timely conflict as relevant today as ever. When have we needed hope more than now?

same: the same back and forth with our actors, the same collaborative contributions from our designers and from our staff artisans, the same meticulous tech experience, and the same adrenaline rush of the first dress run through. I know we are lucky at Syracuse Stage to have the privilege of creating theatre right now. The process was infused with love and left us all feeling, well, hopeful. We are thrilled to share it with you.

It was with great hope that we returned to the rehearsal hall to start our work on Talley’s Folly. It was more of an emotional experience than I expected it to be. Weeks of negotiation with our actors’ national labor union and weeks of safety planning culminated in a three week rehearsal process that started on zoom and wrapped up in front of four cameras ably helmed by our friends at Black Cub Productions. We were on uncharted ground, and we couldn’t be sure how it would all play out. But we never took a moment for granted, and I have to admit that it was a thrilling experience. Yes, it is strange to create a production that never sees a live audience. But the process of creating a work of theatre was the

CAFFE CINO THE STORY WOULD BE great material for a long-form television series, the kind so many of us are tuning in during these COVID days of at home entertainment. The time is the late 1940s through the 1960s and beyond. In 1948, a gay sixteen-yearold boards a bus in his native

14

Buffalo, New York, and through a blizzard travels to New York City. Like so many before and after, the young man has aspirations to be an actor and a dancer. The call of a new life is irresistible. But the going is tough. For a decade, he struggles to find work without much success. Then in December of 1958, with just four hundred

dollars left in his bank account, the young man takes a risk. He opens a coffeehouse at 31 Cornelia Street in Greenwich Village and puts his name on it: officially Caffe Cino Art Gallery, shortened to Caffe Cino, but soon to be known as just the Cino—proprietor Joe Cino. Within years of the café opening, another gay young man arrives in New York. His journey has taken him from rural Missouri to San Diego for a brief and unsuccessful reunion with his estranged father to Chicago where he works for a while as a graphic designer and

“A year after his arrival in New York, Lanford Wilson gets his first production when Caffe Cino stages his one-act “So Long at the Fair.”” takes classes in playwriting. In New York, he takes up residence in a series of run down hotels and frequents all night coffee shops whose usual clientele consists of various hustlers, petty criminals, drug dealers, prostitutes, pimps, and drag queens. He finds the surroundings colorful and the company thrilling–like nothing he has ever seen before. He sits alone in corners writing verbatim the lively conversations he overhears. He can’t write fast enough. Occasionally, he interrupts the speakers and asks them to repeat what they’ve said. It takes courage but he must; it’s the funniest dialogue Lanford Wilson has ever heard. Down in the Village, the Cino is thriving. It’s the pre-Stonewall era and the café Joe Cino has opened gives his friends a warm, intimate, and friendly place to hang out without fear of harassment or prejudice. It also provides gallery space to display his lover’s artwork. In short time, though, it is a

16

popular spot for poetry and dramatic readings that morph into almost nightly dramatic performances of almost exclusively original work. The 18’ X 30’ playing area of the Cino becomes the first home of what will eventually be known as offoff-Broadway theatre. As a producer, if that’s what he is, Joe Cino is hands off. He often does not read the scripts before they are performed. Anything goes and the creative freedom appeals to many aspiring playwrights and theatre artists. In the constant swirl of gold and dross over the years are writers, directors, and actors such as Sam Shepard, Doric Wilson, John Guare, Robert Heide, Robert Patrick, William Hoffman, Marshall W. Mason, Tom O. Horgan, Harvey Keitel, Al Pacino, and a teenaged Bernadette Peters in her first starring role in the musical Dames at Sea. A year after his arrival in New York, Lanford Wilson gets his first production when Caffe

Cino stages his one-act “So Long at the Fair.” The Village Voice notices and praises the young playwright. A year later Wilson’s The Madness of Lady Bright draws even wider attention for the playwright and the Cino. The title character, Leslie Bright, is a gay man confronting loneliness in middle age. It is one of the first plays to deal openly with gay life and is the first Cino produced play to move to a larger offBroadway venue. Wilson’s next play, Balm in Gilead, marks the emergence

of a promising new playwriting talent. Built on the notes scribbled in those all night coffee shops, Wilson’s play presents a sprawling hodge-podge of 29 street characters whose overlapping dialogue crackles with gritty authenticity. It’s a sensation for producer Ellen Stewart at her newly founded La MaMa Experimental Theatre, a bigger space located just blocks away from the Cino. Nightly, the play draws overflowing crowds as well as fire marshals with whom Stewart pleads to keep the theatre open. Balm

in Gilead achieves the unheard of in the burgeoning world of downtown experimental theatre—critical and commercial success. Off-off-Broadway has arrived. Good storytellers know that shifts in their characters’ fortunes, the ongoing interplay of success and failure, keep audiences interested. Professionally at least, from Balm in Gilead onward Lanford Wilson enjoys steady success, moving from off-off to off to eventually on Broadway. Along with the director Marshall W. Mason, with whom he forged a longlasting and productive artistic partnership beginning with Balm in Gilead, Wilson co-

founds the famed Circle Repertory Theatre, a vital force in New York theatre from 1969 to 1996 important to the careers of playwrights such as Marsha Norman, Sam Shepard, and Craig Lucas, as well as actors like William Hurt, Swoosie Kurtz, Jeff Daniels, Kathy Bates, and Judd Hirsh and Trish Hawkins, the original Matt and Sally in Talley’s Folly. With a career output of more than thirty plays, a Pulitzer Prize (Talley’s Folly, 1980), and five Broadway productions (Fifth of July, Talley’s Folly, Angels Fall, Burn This, and Redwood Curtain), Lanford Wilson earned a place among the leading American playwrights of the late 20th century.

“The incredible freedom of being able to be yourself in that place— you could do just anything and it made me want to experiment like crazy.”–Lanford Wilson Fortune was not as kind to Joe Cino. Fire destroys the Caffe Cino in 1965. The fire is ruled an accident but suspicion of arson falls on Cino’s partner Jon Torrey. The place is rebuilt and performances resume quite successfully. Dames at Sea proves especially popular, and as the off-off-Broadway movement gains recognition and notoriety, the clientele changes. The rich and famous begin to frequent the Cino and with them come an influx of potent drugs. In January of 1967, Torrey dies in an electrical accident. Cino believes it's suicide, and according to his friends at the time, he begins to spiral out of control and his drug use becomes heavy. Then in the early morning hours of March 30, 1967, after a long night of drinking and drugs, Joe Cino returns to his café and stabs himself repeatedly. He dies three days later on Torrey’s birthday. Given these tragic circumstances, it’s difficult not to wonder whether Joe Cino ever fully understood and appreciated

his contribution to the theatre. The absolute creative freedom he allowed his playwrights certainly inspired imaginations and launched careers. Playwright Robert Heide recalled; “For Joe, the doors were always open: do your own thing, do what you have to do, do what you want to do.” The young Lanford Wilson found refuge and inspiration at the Cino: “The incredible freedom of being able to be yourself in that place—you could do just anything and it made me want to experiment like crazy.” Today, 31 Cornelia Street in Greenwich Village is registered on the NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project. A plaque featuring a photo of Joe Cino carries the inscription: “On this site, in the Caffe Cino (1958-1968), artists brought theater into the modern era, creating OffOff Broadway and forever altering the performing arts worldwide.” –Joseph Whelan

His new play salt/city/blues will have its world premiere in Syracuse Stage’s 20/21 season, and Citizen James, or The Man With a Country, his one-person play about a young James Baldwin, commissioned by Syracuse Stage, will be produced as part of Syracuse Stage’s Backstory program early next year. Script consultant on Thoughts of a Colored Man, Kyle is a two-time recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship (for fiction in 1998 and playwriting in 2010), a finalist for the Princess Grace Playwriting Award, and Pushcart Prize nominee. His other full-length plays include Tender Rain, Baldwin vs. Buckley: The Faith of Our Fathers, Bleecker Street, and Separated, a piece of documentary theatre about the student military veterans at Syracuse Univer-

sity, which was presented at Syracuse Stage and at the Paley Center in New York, directed by Robert Hupp. Kyle is the co-author (with Ping Chong) of Cry for Peace: Voices from the Congo, which had its world premiere at Syracuse Stage and was subsequently produced at La MaMa Experimental Theatre in New York, and the libretto for an opera based on the life and music of legendary folk singer and guitarist Libba Cotten, commissioned by the Society for New Music. As dramaturg, Kyle worked with acclaimed visual artist Carrie Mae Weems on her theatre piece Grace Notes: Reflections for Now, which had its world premiere at the 2016 Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, South Carolina, subsequently produced at Yale Rep and the Kennedy Center. As a screenwriter, Kyle is the coauthor of the original screenplay for the film Day of Days (Broad Green Pictures, 2017), which stars awardwinning veteran actor Tom Skerritt. His plays and other writings have appeared in the journals Callaloo, Folio, and Stone Canoe, among others, and in the essay anthology Alchemy of the Word: Writers Talk

WHO WE ARE Syracuse Stage is the non-profit, professional theatre company in residence at Syracuse University. We are nationally recognized for creating stimulating theatrical work that engages Central New York, and for our significant contribution to the artistic life of Syracuse University, where we are a vital partner in achieving the educational mission of the University’s Department of Drama.

OUR MISSION Syracuse Stage tells stories that engage, entertain, and inspire us to see life beyond our own experience.

OUR VISION Reimagining what's possible for regional theatre–through active inclusion, innovative outreach, and bold productions–Syracuse Stage shapes the culture and social vitality of Central New York, enriches the Syracuse University student experience, and fosters change in ourselves, our communities, and our world.

O U R C O R E VA L U E S People - Actively including diverse individuals, communities, ideas, and perspectives. Passion - Commitment to integrity, excellence, and enthusiasm in our work. Curiosity - Fostering an innovative and adaptive environment that elicits wonder.

A B O U T S Y R A C U S E S TA G E Originally constructed as the Regent Movie House in 1914, the physical space of Syracuse Stage has seen many films, musicians, actors, and artists pass through its doors over the course of the past century. The Syracuse Stage that exists today is a nonfor-profit professional theatre company founded in 1974, and a longstanding League of Resident Theatres (LORT) member. Since its inception, Stage has produced over 300 shows, both plays and musicals, within its walls. Now, Stage produces six to seven shows per season, while also offering educational programs to students, various pre- and post-show events, and fundraising events each year. Stage is Central New York’s only LORT theatre and one of the largest performing arts organizations in the area. Stage has a strong commitment to giving the community access to a range of high-quality productions; it is equally committed to bringing in actors, designers, and directors who are among the leading theatre professionals, both locally and across the nation.

B L A C K L I V E S M AT T E R We stand in solidarity with those who protest today for justice. We condemn racism. We are horrified by the murder of George Floyd and the cycle of violence perpetrated against Black Americans. We stand with our neighbors in Syracuse who gather in the hope of a better tomorrow. As an institution, we acknowledge that we need to listen, to learn, to be more effective allies in this cause. In this moment in time, we must use our power as storytellers to shift the narrative, we must lead by example to combat racism. We must lift up the many voices in our community. We will do better.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Syracuse Stage respectfully acknowledges the Onondaga Nation, firekeepers of the Haudenosaunee, the indigenous people on whose ancestral lands we now stand.

IN THE COMMUNITY Stage has collaborated with a myriad of institutions in the Syracuse area. Community partners include AccessCNY, ARC of Onondaga, ARISE, ArtRage, CNY Reads, Interfaith Works of Central New York, La Casita, McMahon / Ryan Child Advocacy Center, Onondaga Historical Association, Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park, SUNY Upstate Medical University, the VA Medical Center, and Vera House. Additionally, the educational department collaborates with many CNY schools.
