ECLEBRAET W I T H US!

LETTER FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

HELLO, FRIENDS.

Welcome to the world premiere of Tender Rain . We’re delighted you’re here. The presentation of this world premiere is a particular pleasure because it is the work of our resident playwright Kyle Bass. If you’re a subscriber, or if you follow our work, you know that this is the third mainstage play by Kyle we’ve produced. You may know too, that over the years Kyle has created work in a variety of other contexts for Syracuse Stage. From his Backstory production about James Baldwin to his work bringing to life the words and stories of local veterans, Kyle’s work is a through-line of our artistic identity. If you are new to Kyle’s work, we’re glad to introduce you to a story Kyle created many years ago but has particular relevance to our lives today. I heard Kyle describe Tender Rain as “symphonic” and I agree. The structure is complex, and the themes are interwoven. Knowing Kyle is also a skilled musician adds context to the play’s structure.

Few regional theatres are fortunate enough to have a resident playwright. Being a resident playwright doesn’t mean that we’ll produce a new play by Kyle every season or on a prescribed schedule. It means that Kyle’s voice

is a central one for Syracuse Stage. It means we have chosen to center playwrights and playwrighting here. And, most importantly, it means that we get to experience over time the diverse facets of a singular theatre artist. That’s a rare treat. Welcome!

With warm regards,

TENDER

ON THE MUSIC OF TENDER RAIN

ONCE UPON A TIME, classical composers composed orchestral music to accompany stage dramas. This incidental music would underlie the mood of a dramatic performance on stage. Because it wasn’t meant to be the star of the show, much of the world’s incidental music is long faded from performance, but some examples have survived as stand-alone masterworks: Felix Mendelssohn’s incidental music to Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (from which we have that ubiquitous wedding march); Edvard Grieg’s music composed for Peer Gynt by Henrik Ibsen, the father of modern drama; and Beethoven’s music composed

for the plays of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the very music which first seized my nascent dramatic imagination.

I was seven years old when my mother purchased a haul of old classical LPs at a garage sale, and I heard Beethoven’s music for the first time. It was his Egmont Overture, from his incidental music to Goethe’s tragic play. My fate had arrived in a cardboard box. I recall it as my first conscious experience of the power of artistic expression. I listened to the recording again and again and again on my father’s hi-fi stereo, and again, just this morning, for the first time since I was a teenager, and its emotion-bringing

18

Suddenly I understood that music, especially classical music—symphonies, concertos, chamber music—possessed a power beyond words but could still put something like a story (drama) into the air.

contours and musical rhetoric— its drama—were awakened in my memory.

Very early on in my life, I heard in everyday speech a kind of music. I fell in love with words, and I wanted to capture and pin them down like butterflies under glass. I couldn’t help myself; I became a child poet. I made my first notebook by hand and named it “My Book of Sayings”. My mother or my father or one of my older siblings would spell words that captivated me but were beyond my spelling. My first intellectual crisis was the realization that there was a word for everything. And

with my discovery of Beethoven, suddenly I understood that music, especially classical music—symphonies, concertos, chamber music—possessed a power beyond words but could still put something like a story (drama) into the air.

Words and Music; Music and Words. I was hooked. I went on to study the flute, the violin, and classical piano, which I play to this day. So, it’s quite natural for me to speak of my playwriting in musical terms.

The great American playwright Edward Albee (who selected an earlier and differently titled it -

eration of Tender Rain for his Great Plains Theater Conference) believed one could learn a lot about playwriting from looking at architecture and by listening to the music of Bach. I frequently use invisible musical structures to build my plays. For instance, my fourcharacter drama Possessing Harriet is written in the three movements (allegro, adagio, presto) of a string quartet. As a playwright I consider myself a composer, a composer for an astonishing instrument called an actor. My plays are informed and shaped by music and by musical language, and always, always, always, by pounding rhythms into the keyboard as I write.

I consider Tender Rain a symphonic drama –symphonic in its structure and emotional textures, with the interweaving of dramatic motifs, musicological configurations of scenes, musical elision, and the use of lyrical speech. While you will not hear any

of it in the play, in one way or another, Tender Rain carries the DNA of each of these pieces of music:

The Double Violin Concerto by Bach

Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 14 (2nd movement) & Knoxville: Summer of 1915, Op. 24 by Samuel Barber

Adagio Cantabile (from Cinnamon Grove) by R. Nathanial Dett

Piano Concerto in G Major (2nd movement) by Maurice Ravel

Piano Concerto No. 2 & Symphony No. 2 by Sergei Rachmaninov

The Flute Concerto (5th movement – “Amhrán”) by Christopher Rouse

Beim Schalfengehen (from Vier Letzte Lieder/Four Last Songs) by Richard Strauss

While almost all the “influential” music I’ve listed above comes out of the European classical tradition, most of

the music in this production of Tender Rain emerges from African American music traditions. While it evokes blackness, I use it to enfold and articulate all the characters in the play, black and white, to depict the universality of our human difficulties, losses, regrets, shame, absolution (?)… It isn’t incidental music; it is an essential element of the story I mean to tell.

Finally, there’s the music of the rain in Tender Rain, underscoring dramatic action and setting theatrical moods. I had prayed for rain to be part of this production. So, I borrow the music of Langston Hughes’ “April Rain Song” and bid you:

Let the rain kiss you

Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops

Let the rain sing you a lullaby…

TENDER RAIN

SCENIC AND PROJECTION DESIGN

Scenic and projection designer Se Hyun Oh said in early conversations director Rodney Hudson was adamant that there should be nothing on the stage: no architecture, no walls, no doors. Oh interpreted Hudson’s directive to mean there should be no distractions. The space should be more of an essence than a specific locale. The goal should be to let the people stand out. “We should see faces,” Oh says.

Oh found inspiration in a series of stark photos taken by Walker Evans that appeared in the November 1946 edition of Fortune magazine under the title "On a Saturday Afternoon in Detroit." The black and white images depict a variety of peo-

ple (faces) captured mostly in threequarter profile as they walked by a section of what appears a wall made of plywood. The simple and spare wall became the floor of the Tender Rain set, darkened to diminish reflection from the stage lights.

For the necessary objects on stage, Oh looked to another American artist, the minimalist Donald Judd, to create wooden box like chairs and tables that can serve multiple uses as required for the play. Oh sees the play as being more emotional than political and in that way more like dance.

TENDER RAIN

COSTUME DESIGN

If the scenic design allows for some abstraction, the costume design is the opposite, according to Tracy Dorman who has designed costumes for many Syracuse Stage productions including the recent Our Town. Each character is a specific individual grounded in the time and place of the play (the South in the mid 1950s), yet, each is also iconic, much like a character in an opera. Using palette, silhouette, and fabric choice, Dorman creates the individual look for each character. In conversations with playwright Kyle Bass and director Rodney Hudson, she says they arrived at the idea to

give some characters a representative color, as referenced in the script. For example, Dolores is in a blue dressing gown and Mary is in a yellow slip. This evolved into an idea of using a floral motif to connect some of the characters in subtle ways, expanding on the idea of the pervasiveness of nature in the play and their setting—the idea of growth/rain/ideas of femininity. When the script calls for transformations—which happen on stage—they are accomplished through small but precise gestures.

24
 COSTUME SKETCHES COURTESY OF TRACY DORMAN.

TENDER RAIN

LIGHTING DESIGN

The setting of the play is intentionally open and spare, with the focus on language, character and specific music, according to designer Dawn Chiang. Lighting helps us to establish the place and mood of each scene, while the transitions are more fluid and dreamlike. As implied in the play’s title, rain plays an important part of the story – so lighting the rain effectively is key. Side lighting is one of the best ways to make that rainfall visible to the audience.

SOUND DESIGN

Intimate and subtle is how designer Fabian Obispo describes the soundscape for Tender Rain. Elements include an almost constant presence of rainfall, and music, mostly vocal, and environmental sounds establish the world the characters inhabit. Certain specific sounds noted in the script are executed live by the actors on stage to suggest memories and recall aural images from the past.
