Welcome! DEAR FRIENDS, Hello, and welcome! Thank you for being a part of our first virtual gala. We didn’t expect to meet like this, but there’s a lot these days we didn’t expect when we started planning this year’s annual event. In fact, our staff and board spent a lot of time in conversation about whether or not we should hold our annual gala in this time of trauma and uncertainty. Our gala connotes a lavish party and frivolity; it’s an opportunity to get dressed up and raise a glass to all that makes Syracuse Stage a special part of our community. But is a gala, or as we now say, an evening of gratitude and hope, out of step with this moment in time? Why hold this special event now? We do so because we believe our theatre is uniquely poised to be an agent of change for our community. We believe the arts are more vital than ever. While our stage is dark, funds raised from tonight’s event support our work and assure our future. National protests for racial justice will and must affect our future. We must seize this moment to craft a more equitable path forward. The pandemic that shutters our world will redefine how we interact. Our lives won’t be the same as they were when we began planning tonight’s event, but there will come a time when we’ll gather again: strangers in a darkened room, united by the transformative experience that happens when artists and audience come together. Until that night, we’ll continue to innovate, to educate, to illuminate, to celebrate the human experience as we see it. With your help tonight, we’ll be ready when the time is right.

HONORING
Bea González A distinguished career and an extraordinary record of service describe Bea González's contribution to the Syracuse community, Syracuse University, and Syracuse Stage. Bea's current position as Vice President for Community Engagement and Special Assistant to the Chancellor crowns a nearly four decade career in higher education, including 30 years dedicated to continuing education. Having joined University College as an academic advisor in 1984, Bea became executive director of the Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program in 1991. She later served as director and associate dean of Student Support Services and was appointed interim dean of University College in 2004. Her appointment was made permanent in 2007. In her current role, she is responsible for leading and advancing the University’s community investment effort by conceptualizing, creating, and implementing new strategies and partnerships to the benefit of the University and community stakeholders. Her responsibilities also include student retention and success, strategic planning, day-to-day services, and policies and procedures focused on student learning, success, and support. Bea's affiliation with Syracuse Stage dates to 2001 when she joined the Board of Trustees. In her nearly two decades of service, her advocacy and dedication have had

a transformative impact on the theatre. Her unique perspective as a lifelong Syracuse resident with deep ties to the community, along with her informed connection to the University, have made her a most valued advisor and guiding light. Board president since 2016, Bea recently led the organization through one of the most significant periods of transition in its
history, assuming leadership responsibilities as a newly appointed artistic director and managing director began their tenures. With plans to retire in summer 2020, Bea and husband Michael Leonard look forward to spending more time with their grandkids and exploring New York’s rivers and canals.

OUR MISSION Syracuse Stage tells stories that engage, entertain, and inspire us to see life beyond our own experience.
OUR VISION Reimagining what's possible for regional theatre–through active inclusion, innovative outreach, and bold productions–Syracuse Stage shapes the culture and social vitality of Central New York, enriches the Syracuse University student experience, and fosters change in ourselves, our communities, and our world.
OUR CORE VALUES People - Actively including diverse individuals, communities, ideas, and perspectives. Passion - Commitment to integrity, excellence, and enthusiasm in our work. Curiosity - Fostering an innovative and adaptive environment that elicits wonder.
ABOUT SYRACUSE STAGE Originally constructed as the Regent Movie House in 1914, the physical space of Syracuse Stage has seen many films, musicians, actors and artists pass through its doors over the course of the past century. The Syracuse Stage that exists today is a nonfor-profit professional theatre company founded in 1974, and a longstanding League of Resident Theatres (LORT) member. Since its inception, Stage has produced over 300 shows, both plays and musicals, within its walls. Now, Stage produces six to seven shows per season, while also offering educational programs to students, various pre- and post-show events, and fundraising events each year. Stage is Central New York’s only LORT theatre and one of the largest performing arts organizations in the area. Stage has a strong commitment to giving the community access to a range of high-quality productions; it is equally committed to bringing in actors, designers and directors who are among the leading theatre professionals, both locally and across the nation.

BLACK LIVES MATTER We stand in solidarity with those who protest today for justice. We condemn racism. We are horrified by the murder of George Floyd and the cycle of violence perpetrated against Black Americans. We stand with our neighbors in Syracuse who gather in the hope of a better tomorrow. As an institution, we acknowledge that we need to listen, to learn, to be more effective allies in this cause. In this moment in time, we must use our power as storytellers to shift the narrative, we must lead by example to combat racism. We must lift up the many voices in our community. We will do better. LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Syracuse Stage acknowledges with respect the Onondaga Nation, firekeepers of the Haudenosaunee, the indigenous people on whose ancestral lands we now stand.
IN THE COMMUNITY Stage has collaborated with a myriad of institutions in the Syracuse area. Community partners include AccessCNY, ARC of Onondaga, ARISE, ArtRage, CNY Reads, Interfaith Works of Central New York, La Casita, McMahon / Ryan Child Advocacy Center, Onondaga Historical Association, Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park, SUNY Upstate Medical University, the VA Medical Center, and Vera House. Additionally, the educational department collaborates with many CNY schools.
