A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT DEAR FORT VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS,
F
ort Valley State University is making incremental progress toward sustained excellence of the highest caliber, and your support has been essential. The life energy, financial support, guidance, and goodwill you provide to the institution invigorates the FVSU experience and allows us to become more relevant to the future of our students every day. We are extremely excited about the direction of the institution, and our donors are helping to point the way. Our students are every bit as talented and gifted as any student anywhere, if not more so. The obstacles that many have had to overcome are at once heartbreaking and uplifting. In terms of proficiency and professionalism, the intellectual and emotional distance many students travel, from their first day as freshman until they walk across the Commencement stage, is nothing short of awe-inspiring. While most colleges believe they exist for a noble purpose, I can’t help feeling that we do something singularly special here at FVSU— turning hope into achievement for both students who would have been accepted at almost any college, as well as students for whom FVSU was their one chance at a better life. I could not be more proud of the impact our institution continues to have on the lives of the deserving men and women who put their faith in us, from the 17-year old freshman to the 70 year old senior citizen who never gave up on their lifelong dream of obtaining a meaningful college degree. That’s why we must never settle for anything less than extraordinary excellence. Even parity with other colleges isn’t enough. Our students need us to be better. We accept and embrace the reality that part of what makes FVSU a one-of a-kind educational opportunity is that we take students farther than they could go if they pursued other life options, and that includes both those who have more remedial ground to make up and those whose extraordinary aptitude demands the type of push that only we can give them. In order to accomplish this, we must be more efficient with our resources, provide extra care and attention, make more global opportunities available, and hire the best faculty and staff. We must be more! Our trajectory is aggressively forward. We’ve launched our Global Innovators Scholarship, providing more than $42,000 in educational funding, in addition to study abroad and research opportunities. We’ve put a revamped development strategy in motion to more effectively build productive relationships with our partners and donors, which has already resulted in significant growth in fundraising. Our University College was launched this year, which ensures that every new student gets off to a solid start by becoming proficient in the fundamentals of success as a scholar. We’ve intensified our focus on faculty development and program quality, and are preparing to roll out an initiative that will place our students in the top tier in the areas of leadership, civic engagement, and professional development. With each new day, our foundation becomes stronger, our vision becomes bolder, and we are reaching higher. None of this would be possible without the support that you provide. Thank you for your continued devotion to FVSU, and for your loyalty as we pursue excellence. Sincerely,
Paul A. Jones, Ph.D. President

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN GREETINGS WILDCAT FRIENDS,
T
his FVSU Foundation, Inc. Annual Report of Giving greets us at an exciting time of transition and success for our University. Our 2016-2017 fiscal year concluded with much enthusiasm from our donors to the board of trustees celebrating the great work and financial sacrifice shown to the University. We continue to celebrate two of the largest donations given to Fort Valley State University in the history of our existence. These transformative gifts inspire us as we prepare for the new fiscal year with hopes on the horizon for another record year of charitable giving. In the face of the many challenges in higher education, we have continued to surpass our goals through the incredible dedication of our board members, corporate partners and the unwavering support from our Wildcat family. This past year of generosity has propelled us well past our fundraising goals, but we could not have done it without the dedication of our alumni family.
Day at Fort Valley State University, and all board members stand firm and ready to increase our philanthropic footprints across Middle Georgia, our state and country. The deep and distinctive culture of care and unity found in our Wildcat family will continue to cultivate synergy and well-founded optimism. Together, we are shaping our University and transforming the lives of our students through scholarships and educational growth. As we plan for the future of Fort Valley State University, I am grateful for and look to our Wildcat family to continue to provide the same passion for our University and dedication to our students who have made The Fort Valley State University the wonderful place we know and love. Sincerely,
Calvin Smyre Chairman

The purposes for which this corporation is organized are as follows: 1. To encourage, solicit, receive, and administer gifts and bequests of property and funds for scientific, educational, and charitable purposes, all for the advancement of Fort Valley State University and its objectives and purposes and to that end to take and hold either absolutely or in trust for any of said objectives and purposes, funds and, property of all kinds, and subject only to any limitations or conditions imposed by law or the instrument under which received; to sell, lease, convey, and dispose of any such property and to invest and reinvest any proceeds and other funds, and to deal and expend the principal and income for any purposes herein authorized; to act as trustee; and, in general, to exercise any, all, and every power, including trust powers, which a corporation not for profit organized under the laws of Georgia for the foregoing purposes can be authorized to exercise. 2. To promote and support education; to provide: (a) funds which are not provided from public sources for use in the furtherance of the education and welfare of Fort Valley State University, its faculty, and students; (b) funds to be used in attracting experienced and outstanding instructors, educators, and scientists to such university; (c) educational facilities, including dormitories; (d) scholarships, and other activities subject to amendment. 3. Upon specific approval of the board of directors or executive committee, to borrow such sums, on such terms and with such security, if any, as may be prescribed in such approval, but no trust assets may be pledged or committed in a manner that would violate the trust upon which held.
5. All of the assets and income of the Foundation shall be used only for the purposes hereinabove set out, including the payment of expenses incidental thereto; and no part of its assets, income, funds, or property shall inure to the benefit of its members, directors, or officers, and no part of its activities shall be for the carrying on of propaganda or otherwise attempting to influence legislation, and the Foundation shall not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of any candidate for public office. 6. In the event of dissolution or other termination of the Foundation, title to all its assets shall vest in The Fort Valley State University or its successor, to be used exclusively for the purpose herein above set out, it being intended that no distribution or payment shall be made which will impair or destroy the tax exempt status of donations, contributions, legacies, bequests, or dues received by this Foundation, to the extent that such tax exempt status shall be allowed under any applicable laws or regulations.
WAYS TO
GIVE
Making a financial gift to the Fort Valley State University Foundation, Inc. ensures that the institution can fulfill its mission. Your gifts provide opportunities for students to pursue their career goals, then after matriculation, contribute to the global community. A contribution to the foundation also provides a special benefit to donors: tax benefits such as deductions for charitable contributions on income tax
returns and capital gains tax savings when tax time approaches. Future estate tax savings also may result from the gift. Donors determine how gifts are administered. When a contribution is not accompanied with specific instructions, it is classified as an unrestricted gift and used in the areas of greatest need at FVSU as determined by the board of directors, the officers of the
GIVE CASH
The easiest way to give to FVSU is through a cash contribution. Make a donation designated for the university’s area of greatest current need. Contribute a large gift for a specific purpose, for scholarships, to enhance facilities, or to support a special activity. TEXT TO GIVE
Text “Wildcats” to 52000. For every text, a one-time $5 donation is charged to your wireless bill or deducted from your prepaid balance. All charges are billed by and payable to your mobile service provider. All donations must be authorized by the account holder. Messaging and data rates may apply. CREDIT CARD
All major credit cards are accepted by the Fort Valley State University Foundation, Inc. “Make a donation” online at: www.fvsu.edu. MATCHING GIFT
You or your spouse may work at a company that matches its employees’ donations to higher education
foundation and the university president. To establish special funds, such as a scholarship in the name of a loved one, the foundation recommends that a meeting is scheduled between the donor and a foundation representative to determine how the funds will be administered and disbursed. Signed documentation that outlines the donor’s wishes is strictly adhered to by the foundation.
institutions. This program offers a great opportunity to double or triple your gift to the university. Each year, FVSU benefits from corporate contributions initiated by company employees or retirees. MEMORIAL GIFT
Remember a loved one, living or deceased, by donating a gift in their name. Often, scholarships are established in memory of an individual to honor them. STOCKS, BONDS AND OTHER ASSETS
Stocks or other investments owned for at least one year that have increased in value become a substantial gift and can be donated at a low net cost to you. Appreciated assets can be ideal funding sources for charitable gifts that provide you (or someone you want to support) regular income for life. TAKE A CAPITAL LOSS YOURSELF
If you own securities worth less now than when originally purchased, sell them and contribute the 2016-2017 ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING PAGE 5
PERSONAL PROPERTY
proceeds to the FVSU Foundation, Inc. Deduct the capital loss on your tax return. A tax break is not available to the foundation if the securities are donated directly to us. LIFE INSURANCE
A contribution to the Fort Valley State University Foundation, Inc. from a life insurance policy can be made either by delivering an assigned ownership of the policy to the foundation, or by naming the foundation as the irrevocable owner and beneficiary of the policy. The policy provides a definite, large, future gift at a small annual expense, and premiums are tax deductible. Another way to give is to change the beneficiary of an existing policy, if the present beneficiary no longer needs protection. The foundation can be named as the new beneficiary or co-beneficiary.
In most cases, a gift of tangible personal property, such as a painting, antiques, books, artifacts, or jewelry is considered a charitable deduction. The potential capital tax on the property’s appreciation can be avoided. APPRECIATED PROPERTY
It is often advantageous to contribute appreciated property rather than cash. Securities, homes, land, and other assets make ideal gifts. By donating gifts of appreciated property, you eliminate capital gains tax and receive a charitable deduction based on the full market value of the gift. OUTRIGHT BEQUEST
Name the FVSU Foundation, Inc. as a beneficiary in your will and make a gift of cash, investments, or property from your estate. RESIDUAL BEQUEST
A residual bequest provides that after specific bequests are made to named individuals, Fort Valley State University receives the “residue” or the amount remaining in the estate.
CODICIL
If you already have a valid, up-todate will, you can have an attorney prepare a codicil to the will naming the university as a beneficiary without rewriting the entire document. CFC FEDERAL CAMPAIGN
The Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) is the workplace giving program of the federal government employees of the United States. If you are a federal government employee and wish to donate to Fort Valley State University Foundation, Inc., please visit www. opm.gov/CFC/CharitySearch/Main and enter our code of 17129. This new process will allow any U.S. government employee to initiate an automatic check deduction. Please call the FVSU Foundation, Inc. at 478-825-6474 if you have any questions.
PLANNED GIVING Scholarships are often the deciding factor for students interested in attending Fort Valley State University. Making an investment through a planned gift is a great way to create a lasting legacy of financial support. Your planned giving will allow you to combine your charitable giving goals with your estate and financial planning goals. By using one of the many different planned giving options, you can give back in a way that works best for you. Become a partner with the university, as we support scholarships and bridge the financial gap for talented students. Plan now to change the future. Property Donation Becomes New Home of FVSU President
Lillian Brooks Graves and her daughter, Agnes Brooks Stewart, were highly respected in the Fort Valley community. These strong women worked diligently in their church and community helping to improve the lives of their neighbors and friends. When Graves and Stewart died suddenly, their beautiful home on Daniel Drive became vacant. Today, the house has a new resident. Early in 2017, Johnnie B. Booker, daughter of Mrs. Graves and sister to Mrs. Stewart, donated the home to Fort Valley State University. The residence and its adjacent one-acre parcel of land are now the current home of President and Mrs. Paul Jones. “I am pleased that the Fort Valley State University Foundation accepted this house for its use, and President and Mrs. Jones have chosen to make it their home,” Booker said. “It is a house that anyone would be proud to live in.” Booker had the house built for her mother 16 years ago.
At the Naming Ceremony in October, designating the home as The Lillian B. Graves House, Booker stated that her, “family connections to the University go back to the early 1940s when my grandfather served as the college chef.” For a while, her family lived with her grandparents, Hubert and Johnnie Mae Rogers, on the campus across from Ohio Hall. Both she and her sister attended FVSU’s nursery and the Demonstration School. They also graduated from Henry A. Hunt High School, named after Fort Valley High and Industrial School’s second principal. In addition, Mrs. Stewart received her baccalaureate degree from FVSU. Booker is a retired executive from the CocaCola Company where she served as Global Director of Supplier
Diversity. She also served as director of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s (FDIC) Office of Equal Opportunity and Vice President of the Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC). She currently serves on the FVSU Foundation’s Board of Directors. Mrs. Graves was a retired nurse who served 32 years at the Peach County Hospital. She genuinely cared about people and enjoyed entertaining them in her home. She was an active member of the St. Peter AME Church for over 65 years and passed away only days after her 85th birthday. Booker’s sister, Agnes, was a retired mathematics teacher and taught in both Peach and Crawford County school systems. She also
served as President of the Peach Area Habitat for Humanity for 5 years. At the time of her passing, she had completed the requirements toward a Masters of Divinity degree from Beacon University and received it posthumously. She was a dedicated lifelong member of St. Peter AME Church where she served as a minister and an ordained deacon. In memory of her beloved mother and sister, Booker established an endowed scholarship at FVSU to benefit an African American female, mathematics major with a B or better grade point average. Booker also stated that her decision to donate the home to FVSU was “based on the University’s history with her family and the community, which her family truly loved.”

Report on the Financial Statements We have audited the accompanying consolidated financial statements of Fort Valley State University Foundation, Inc. and Subsidiaries (the Foundation) (a nonprofit organization), which comprise the consolidated statements of financial position as of June 30, 2017 and 2016, and the related consolidated statements of activities and cash flows for the years then ended, and the related notes to the financial statements. Management’s Responsibility for the Financial Statements Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these consolidated financial statements in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America; this includes the design, implementation and maintenance of internal control relevant to the preparation and fair presentation of consolidated financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. Auditor’s Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these consolidated financial statements based on our audits. We conducted our audits in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America and the standards applicable to financial audits contained in Government Auditing Standards, issued by the Comptroller General of the United States. Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the consolidated financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the Foundation’s preparation and fair presentation of the consolidated financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the Foundation’s internal control. Accordingly, we express no such op1mon. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and

the reasonableness of significant accounting estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the consolidated financial statements. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion. Opinion In our opinion, the consolidated financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the consolidated financial position of Fort Valley State University Foundation, Inc. and Subsidiaries as of June 30, 2017 and 2016, and the changes in, its net assets and cash flows for the years then ended in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America. Other Matter Our audit was conducted for the purpose of forming an opinion on the consolidated financial statements as a whole. The accompanying schedule of expenditures of federal awards, as required by Title 2 U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 200, Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards (Uniform Guidance), is presented for purposes of additional analysis and is not a required pan of the consolidated financial statements. Such information is the responsibility of management and was derived from and relates directly to the underlying accounting and other records used to prepare the consolidated financial statements. The information has been subjected to the auditing procedures applied in the audit of the consolidated financial statements and certain additional procedures, including comparing and reconciling such information directly to the underlying accounting and other records used to prepare the consolidated financial statements or to the financial statements themselves, and other additional procedures in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America. In our opinion, the information is fairly stated in all material respects in relation to the consolidated financial statements as a whole. Other Reporting Required by Government Auditing Standards In accordance with Government Auditing Standards, we have also issued our report dated October 25, 2017 on our consideration of the Foundation’s internal control over financial reporting and on our tests of it compliance wi1h certain provision of laws, regulation, contract and grant agreement and other matters.
The purpose of that report is solely to describe the scope of our testing of internal control over financial reporting and compliance and the results of that 1es1ing, and not to provide an opinion on the effectiveness of the Foundation’s internal control over financial reporting or on compliance. The report is an integral part of an audit performed in accordance with Government Auditing Standards in considering the Foundation’s internal control over financial reporting and compliance.

Fort Valley State University hosted a conference designed to provide attendees with the needed technical skills, training and tips to successfully navigate the grant-writing process. The 12th annual Grantsmanship Institute Training Conference was held Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016 at the C.W. Pettigrew Center, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The theme of the event was “OSP: Opportunities Seeking PIs.” Dr. Chanta Haywood, interim vice president for external affairs and executive director of the FVSU Foundation, Inc., said the conference demonstrates the university’s commitment to promoting best practices in successful grant management both on FVSU’s campus as well as within middle Georgia. “Advancing the training and skills of grants writers is not only positive for Fort Valley State, but also for the entire middle Georgia region. This conference will allow members of the general public to enhance their chances of securing financial resources for their agencies, nonprofits and even private businesses,” Haywood said. Participants were expected to learn tactics that improve submissions, maintain records and comply with funding agencies rules and regulations, to ensure continued compliance and success. Award management guidance was a key focus of the conference. Attendees had an opportunity to network with agency program officers from various federal and private foundation representatives to learn more about what they are looking for when proposals are submitted. Frances Martin, pre-awards coordinator for the Office of Sponsored Programs, said, “This year, we are adding break-out sessions for students interested in working with primary investigators on research and submissions.” 2016-2017 ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING PAGE 9

FVSU ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Alumna Makes Historic Donation Fort Valley State alumna Elizabeth Williams-Brister was a compassionate educator that dreamed of helping her students achieve great things. The retired teacher wanted young people to consider attending a Historically Black College. Williams-Brister’s time at Fort Valley State was an unforgettable, positive experience. Although she never set foot on the university’s campus again after she graduated, her endearing love for FVSU never faltered or wavered. At every opportunity, the dignified teacher recruited students for the campus, encouraging all young students to consider making FVSU their college of choice. Last year, WilliamsBrister tragically passed away from cancer. But even in death, the gentle
alumna continued to give back to her alma mater. The high school administrator left a stunning $657,000 donation to Fort Valley State University in her will. The generous donation is the largest, single gift from a private donor. The university will use the money to fund scholarships for university science students. “Nobody in our family was surprised that she donated this money to Fort Valley State University,” her niece, Dr. Marla Fowler said. “She was always a giving person, even in death. Her vision was to help those students who wanted to get an education, yet the only thing stopping was financial barriers. Her mother struggled to get her through college, and she did not want this to be.” Fowler described her aunt as strong,
compassionate, loving, and kind. Williams-Brister attended Fort Valley State College during the mid1960s. The future educator was a serious student. Her deep passion for learning was only exceeded by her love for the campus and the HBCU experience. “My aunt had a great love for Fort Valley State and HBCUs,” Fowler said. “She was really nerdy. She didn’t have an outstanding campus life where she socialized a lot. She attended class and made sure she earned all A’s and B’s. My aunt was in love with learning. She believed that every African-American student should attend an HBCU.” The science-scholar marched with her bachelor’s degree in biology in 1968. She was the first and only
child from her immediate family to earn a college degree. After graduating, Williams-Brister sought employment in the research field. A Middle Georgia science laboratory hired her. Williams-Brister left Middle Georgia, then moved to New Jersey, teaching biology, chemistry and physical science at Irvington High, a comprehensive public school in Essex County, New Jersey. Five years later, the school system promoted Williams-Brister. She spent her remaining years as the campus’ science department head. Fulfilling those duties for over 30 years. Williams-Brister did not have any children of her own; however, her students, nieces and nephews were her
Coach Porter Talks About Plans For 2018 Football Season The season is over for the Fort Valley State University Wildcats football team, but the hard work for Head Coach Kevin Porter will continue. Spring will be key for Porter to build the Wildcat team. He will identify raw talent that can contribute to the team’s powerful offense and defense and hurtle it toward another Championship run. In 2016 the Wildcats defeated Albany State University in the Fountain City Classic and won the SIAC Championship for the first time in 19 years defeating Kentucky State University. Porter wants to build trust and construct strong relationships with his student-athletes. PAGE 16 FORT VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION, INC.
“My coaching philosophy is based on a relationshipcentered philosophy. It’s about having great relationships with the players, making sure that we, as coaches, are involved in their lives.” Porter says he knows of the problems student-athletes have with balancing their work and school life. “We are aware of the challenges that student-athletes go through,” he said. “It’s tough being a student-athlete. You have to endure the rigors of school and social life as a college student. We understand that they’re athletes, as well. There is a competitive element that normal students don’t have to deal with, and the coaches have to be sensitive to those facts. It is important that when a student-

“adopted children”. She took an intense interest in supporting their intellectual lives and emotional well-being. At every opportunity, she told her students and relatives that they were bright and intelligent, encouraging them to pursue a college education. “There was no other choice in my family,” Fowler said, “We had to attend college. She always painted a picture of the opportunities an education afforded. My aunt always told me how smart I was. She pushed for all her nieces and nephews to get an education. She also told us that there was nothing like an HBCU experience. She knew that if we could get an
education, it would open doors for us.” The educator also financially supported the dreams of her students and relatives. “My aunt helped to fund my education when I was getting my doctorate degree,” Fowler said. “She immediately wrote me a check like it was nothing. Even after her death, she made sure that her relatives were well taken care of. She was about giving.” Fowler became an English Instructor and now teaches students. Once Williams-Brister became sick, she began to think about other ways she could help others. The retired educator wondered if she should
athlete signs, their scholarship will decide what school they were attending. When parents enroll their kids into FVSU, I want them to feel comfortable with who they are dropping kids off with for the next four years.” Porter took over the Wildcats football program in May 2016. He only had a short time to connect with players and get the team in shape. “Our goal was not to win the championship. Our mission was to work hard and get better every week,” he said. “We started winning some games and put ourselves in a position to win the division at the end of the season. In 2016, it came down to the matchup between FVSU and Albany State, and the winner would go to the SIAC Championship game. We had some tremendous performances from our kids. They played well, and they

set the beneficiary in her will to the oncology ward that was helping her to fight cancer. The alumna decided the money would go to better use helping FVSU students. “My aunt was always willing to show up and help,” Fowler said. “We found her will and learned that she had changed the beneficiary to the school. She was always giving to people, and in the end, she put Fort Valley State’s name down. Anyone who was close to her knew that this was in her character.” Fowler said that her aunt would have preferred to make the donation, in this way, with little fanfare. She described her aunt as a humble woman, staying out of the limelight while
helping others achieve their dreams. “She was a very private person,” Fowler said. “She didn’t like a lot of noise or hanging out in the Commons. She wouldn’t have made a big deal about this donation. She wouldn’t have allowed a photographer to take her pictures. She was always the person in the background doing the most.” Fowler hopes her aunt’s altruism will encourage more individuals to give back to their alma mater. “Every graduate from an HBCU should become a donor,” Fowler said. “I donated to mine, and we need to give back and help others. My aunt’s example has made me increase the money I give back to my alma mater. If everyone did this, we could help future generations get their college degrees.” For details on how to make a donation, contact the FVSU Foundation at (478) 825-6474.
were able to play in the championship game. It was the first time that FVSU won the championship in 19 years.” Coach Porter says he will continue to keep his team focused on the technical aspects to win games. “From a technical, strictly football philosophy our goal is to play great on the defensive side of the ball and be great in the kicking game,” he said. “We want to be able to run the football on offense and not turn it over. We feel the most important stats in football are scoring offense, scoring defense and turnover margin. We feel that if we’re good in these aspects of the game, then we have the chance to be successful.” 2016-2017 ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING PAGE 17

Verizon Foundation Wells Fargo Matching Gifts Program WHAT ARE MATCHING GIFT COMPANIES? Thousands of companies and corporate foundations in the United States currently match their employees’ gifts to nonprofit organizations such as universities. Under a corporate matching gift program, donations made by a company’s eligible employee or spouse are matched with corporate foundation funds. STEP 1 To initiate a matching gift, a donor fills out the company’s matching gift form (available through the benefits office) and sends it, along with a donation, to the FVSU Foundation, Inc. STEP 2 The university’s foundation completes the form and returns it to the company. STEP 3 The company then sends a check to FVSU Foundation, Inc.
