YOUTHFUL INTERVENTION Hope Point, Kuala Lumpur, 2010 An attempt to intervene in the past, present and the future of youths in one of Asia’s booming metropolises. The exercise experiments the programmes of education and mental health in assisting ‘problematic’ youths living in cities; getting them on their feet to face the challenges of daily undertakings.

Progression of the spatial organisation for the youth development centre

Set along the boundary of Ampang and Kampung Dato’ Keramat — two of KL’s 4densest enclaves — the Hope Point intends to spatially reconcile the emotional pressure and physical obstacles of troubled youths. Demarkation of spaces are straightforwardly executed. Clear provisions of educational sectors with respect to temporary lodging facilities holds a crucial part of this assignment.

HALT! Wakaf, Stesen Komuter Shah Alam, 2010 Deriving from Arabic for ‘a place to stop’, the concept of ‘wakaf’ has found its way in the context of the Nusantara, or the Malay Archipelago (modern-day Malaysia, Indonesia, Southern Thailand, Brunei, Singapore and environs) as a popular form of open, small resting spot for travellers. This exercise points to reviving the traditional concept of wakaf in a modern setting. Here, the idea of a wakaf is explored by placing it in a highly urban context, located adjacent to a transportation node, in a Kuala Lumpur suburb of Shah Alam. The speculation progresses by conceptualising the wakaf’s transitional nature, defining the connectivity between two crucial points in its immediate surrounding — the train station and the main vehicular access — while optimising its users’ experiences in stopping, waiting or letting time pass. TOKEN OF FAITH

Masjid Panjang (Long Mosque), Kota Bharu, 2010 Conservative, dynamic and eccentric, the northeastern Malaysian state of Kelantan offered a unique exploration of opportunities for this particular exercise. Tasked with designing a mosque, envisions a node for a community to reconcile its needs, re-establishing a new reference point in the neighborhood. Juxtapositions are celebrated generously in this assignment. The urban versus rural, the rich versus poor, the young versus old, the religious versus the secular, the private and the public: these teemingly contrasting experiences held close the spatial design altogether. The design bids heavily to rejuvenate an important, once livelier enclave in the Kelantanese capital of Kota Bharu. Its inhabitants held their history and social context with high esteem. Thus, an offering: a homage to the local identity, while simulaneously giving the programmes of a traditional mosque a revisit; with a reclustering of the the spatial arrangements. 5

RACE TO HOUSE Petak Angkasa, Shah Alam, 2010 Up to 70% of Malaysian population are becoming urbanised, and the number is growing. Property prices soar particularly in the country’s major population core, the Klang Valley. Housing afforrability remains as one of fore issues facing many.

Petak Angkasa (Malay: ‘blocks in the sky’) explored the potential in offering personal, open spaces for each unit; with its respective units categorised into two distinct typologies, the verandah and the lanai.

LIFE SUPPORT

Bridging healthcare and well-being, one community at a time The context of Kampung Melayu Subang is emboldened with the rich layers of society and amalgamations of various programmes, all nestled within less than two kilometer radius. The diversity is happening in parallel with the phenomenon of the Klang Valley’s rapid growth, the heart of a developing nation. The site context, nevertheless, addressed the development boom with a low tone, embracing what could be said as its own typology of an urban enclave.

The idea of the design is to present itself in accordance to the already strong presence of humily, while carefully projecting itself to the surrounding. Suka Pramana is to be perceived as twins — both Sanskrit-derived, Suka means happiness while Pramana stands for knowledge. It is intended for the users to engage in the programess related to these elements, happiness and knowledge, relating to their health and well-being.

CONTEXT CASE STUDY: EAST LONDON/EAST END vs KAMPUNG MELAYU SUBANG

Comparatively, East London also served as the main transporation node not only for the UK, but also for the whole British Empire during its zenith.

The issues are relatable to social pretext of Kampung Melayu Subang, where the area is marked by unstable property market, rising number of immigrant communities; living side by side exisiting locals of multiethnic composition. Can something be done to regenerate Kampung Melayu Subang? The task explores a possibility of new health and wellness centre as a generator for many generations of nearby residents and outside visitors.

Immigrants flocked to the area, triggering regentrification and laying foundation to a restructuring of local culture. East Asian communities continue to make up a sizable number of East London’s population. Significantly high number of inhabitants are currently living under poverty and high crime rate, which coincide with lower property values. New programmes have been established in efforts to regenerate the area. Redevopment nodes are established, particularly the Canary Wharf, the City of London; and recently, the Olympics 2012 site. 14

LIFE SUPPORT | Suka Pramana

In its heyday, Kampung Melayu Subang’s development is boosted by a thriving economic base: providing a support system to a transportation hub. Its growth is accelerated primarily by the existence of the Subang Airport, Malaysia’s main air hub up till the year 1998. While operational today, the airport now only caters to low-carrier flights and special fleets.

Paths disperse from the respective axes, creating linkages between the inner spaces.

For the wellness wing, the paths disperse into two linkages, in respect with the differing, albeit similar nature of the programmes. Mergence occur at the main node of the area, the Ampitheater.
