inecraft is a fun and unique game that has grown in popularity since the classic version became available, on May 17, 2009. This game gives players an endless world in which to build, and create anything, and everything that the imagination can concoct. Markus “Notch” Persson invented Minecraft as a sandbox building game. From the very beginning, players agreed that this game had an evident appeal unlike any other. My first experience with Minecraft was very much like many other gamers’. I found my character generated in a world with nothing but my character’s bare hands to work with. I quickly discovered that I could “mine” any object and acquire materials with which to build weapons, and create structrues, like a house. Using basic materials, like wood from trees gave way to creating tools that allowed me to mine more durable materials, like stone, and evenutally iron, and even diamonds.

One essential aspect of Minecraft, of course, is crafting. There are actually few materials available, but there seems to be an endless world of possiilties when it comes to crafting. Before you know it you are turning sheep’s wool and wood into a bed, or sand into glass! The game is meant to challenge your imagination and allow your creativity to run wild. There is little other goal to it. The key is to challenge yourself and find your own entertainment. Build a castle, a space station, or even recreate Mount Rushmore! The key is to have fun! In today’s world, isn’t that just what we all need?

Mojang’s 10-Year Plan Is this the end of Minecraft? The latest rumor among fans of the popular game Minecraft is that it will no longer be available in ten years, and that Mojang will be shutting down completely. Markus “Notch” Persson, founder of Mojang, and creator of the game says otherwise. Apparently, a statement that he had made previously regarding Mojang’s financial stability had been taken completely out of context by some, and led to inaccurate projections that Minecraft, along with Mojang, planned to retire in the next ten years. Following an interview with GameSpot, Notch said, “Hopefully, we are going to keep making money at Mojang, but if we don’t, that’s fine. We just have 10 fun years, and then the last year, we’d say to our employees, ‘If we don’t make any money this year,
Bradbury-FullMagazine.indd 6
Mojang is going to be dead. So you might want to look for new jobs.’”. What Persson meant by this statement, is that if the company ceased to make a profit beginning today, Mojang could still survive comfortably, without making any profit, until the year 2024. Put simply, there is enough money saved to sustain Mojang for ten years even in the event that they did not make a single cent. Of course, with the recent expansions, and the continued popularity among players, this is not a current concern for Persson, or Mojang. To date, Minecraft is one of the biggest games ever invented. Original versions of the game existed only on PC, but have already moved to versions

available on Android mobile devices, and XBOX 360. Future expansions include versions for PS4, as well as XBox One consoles. Not to mention Minecraft Realms, which has recently become available, and the release of the Halo Minecraft version coming up at the end of May.
“I meant we’re sav-
ing money so that from the day we don’t make a profit, we’ll survive another ten years.”
Bradbury-FullMagazine.indd 7
With all the exisiting additions, and future additions that have already been scheduled for release, it doesn’t look like Mojang will be going anywhere any time soon. Mojang’s ten year plan includes continued growth of Minecraft, and has no signs of slowing down. Updates, and support for all platforms will continue to be made available to players to ensure that everyone’s favorite sandbox building game will remain available, and enjoyable for many more years to come. Persson clarified what he meant, saying, “I meant we’re saving money so that from the day we don’t make a profit, we’ll survive another ten years.”.

Mojang presents a new
subscription service available to players that will allow quick online set-up of worlds which can then be accessed by an approved list of players. Setting up servers has proved difficult at times in the past, and this service hopes to alleviate many, if not all, of those problems. Those familiar with Minecraft servers are all too aware of the problems that often arise when attempting to set up servers for new worlds. LAN networks have to be set up, IPs must be configured, and ports set up. Sometimes even after completing all of these tasks, players were unable to locate a server, or experienced other errors causing them to have to start the long process all over in hopes to find the error, which was often a simple typing error. Minecraft Realms is a paid subscription server that will take care of all the tedious work for you, allowing users to create an infinitely large new world quickly, and easily. Existing maps can be exported into Realms for the duration of the subscription, and even for a limited time after it has expired. Although texture packs, and modding are not currently supported, Mojang expects to continue upgrades to Realms as its popularity increases.

Realms servers will be available to players, even if the host is not logged in, seven days a week and 24 hours a day. Servers will allow hosts to invite up to 20 players, allowing up to 10 to play at any one time. Players must receive an invite from the host in order to play on a server, and will not be allowed to play without one. Hosts can easily add or remove players from the approved list with a few simple mouse clicks, ensuring that only the players the host has approved will be allowed to play. Worlds will routinely be saved for back up and hosts can restore the world to various restore points if the need ever arises. These back-ups are done automatically at regular intervals, and information provided to the host so that a restore can be done at one of many previously saved points. Minecraft Realms give even the inexperienced web hosters the ability to create, and manage their own server. Additionally, it is an easier and faster way to host Minecraft servers, allowing them to manage the Realm from inside the game. Subscriptions are available in 30, 60, and 180 day packages priced reasonably, and discounted as the package size increases for better value. Minecraft Realms debuted in Sweden last December and launched in North America in late April. Players can purchase a Minecraft Realm through their Mojang account. More information can be found by checking out the FAQ section on minecraft.net/ realms.

WHEN
WORLDS
COLLIDE
Beginning on May 28, Minecraft’s XBox 360 Version will finally collide with the world of Halo. Various items from the popular game Halo will become available on Minecraft, such as Halo inspired worlds, weapons, and characters. The announcement for this mash-up pack comes after Microsoft indicated that Halo content would become available for the Minecraft game in May. Halo isn’t the first game to offer a mash-up pack for Minecraft. This pack follows other popular ti-

tles like Spider-Man, and Mass Effect. Currently, these mash-up packs are only available for the XBox 360 version of the game. Release of the XBox One will launch in August, and downloaded mash-ups will be transferrable. The new Halo pack will include

over 40 popular character skins of popular figures from Halo, like Master Chief, Cortana, Sergeant Johnson, and the Arbiter. There will also be several pre-made worlds that include Silent Cartographer, Sandtrap, Valhalla, Blackout, Guardian, and Blood Gulch, to name a few. Developed by 4J Studios, the Halo mash-up pack includes a Halo-themed 31 music tracks from across the Halo universe, texture set, themed menus and user interface, and various craftable items. News of the Halo mash-up pack comes on the heels of the announcement of Halo 5.
