Textile Factory

Suining Jinhua 1958 Textile Factory is a renewal project situated in Suining, Sichuan. Suining Government has an emphasis on preserving historical elements on site as it is the most significant heritage architecture in town. This has led to a series of debates from the beginning at stage 2 regarding the proportion of demolition and preservations, especially when the site is not valuable enough to consider as national heritage. The entire site has gone through several design schemes.

At first, almost 60% of the buildings within the entire development was going to be preserved. However due to cost and time consideration as well as certain areas with structural instability, the stakeholders agreed to preserve only about 30% of the site, as rebuilding is less expensive and time consuming. These include most of the big factory and the small boiler house, and the rest are either being demolished or totally rebuilt.

Two programs on site that are worth sharing in particular may be the boiler houses and the sales gallery ( part of big factory). For the boiler houses, I have been fully responsible from stage 2 till stage 4, due to the ownership of the boiler houses that they belong to z We also proposed to keep existing metal elements of the buildings to be refurbished and include them into our design. During stage 2-3 design process, a series of iterations of the similar design were produced due to client’s uncertainty of the size of the contemporary windows. Yet, at a later stage under consultations with the LDI and facade consultants, some restrictions on windows opening has been defined, including restrictions of openings size, therefore putting an end to ongoing minor changes in design.

Suining government as public buildings, they have taken more of a preservation approach.

Our design approach being preserving the existing fabric as much as possible, with insertion of big contemporary windows for display purposes, to connect audience both from the inside of the building as well as from the outside.

Total Area: 78,870.46 sqm

Site Area: 46,428.12 sqm

The exisitng condition of the Big Factory and the space after design. Green is introduced into the space with added courtyard to bring more light into the big factory, which offer a nice retail experience for visitors.

Northern entry of Big Factory, a canopy is designed to add some shade for pedestrian at the same time complying to building regulations to be permeable in order prevent crossing site boundary.

Anchor store in retail street which is desinged to have one in every 30-50m in the retail street.

This is designed by myself and it is situated in the middle of retail street. The idea is to have a double height anchor store that celebrates the traditional brick pattern that will allow light permeats through the facade and acts as an attractor point at the retail street.

The small factory is essentially a retail street where small stores and cafe are. One side of it is the small factory (left hand side of the picture) and the other side were entirely demolished to be rebuilt as Minguofeng architecture style. The original architecture were pitched roof brick house that were served as storage for the factory. They were deemed to have zero value by client and hence were entirely demolished.

Suining Government wish the hub to be as successful as Tanzishi in Chongqing hence create one side of the retail street as Minguofeng style.

Suining Jinhua1958 Boiler House Renewal

The boiler house belongs to Suining Jinhua 1958 Textile Factory Cultural Hub, as one of the highlight in the hub it will be the musem in the park displaying historic memorial peice from the past of the factory and showcase the story of the place.

My role in this project is to deisgn the boiler house from concept till detail design stage, although it is a small building it requires me work closely with structural and facade consultant to make sure the design came to flourishion.

AlthoughinSuiningTextileFactory, mostbuildingfabric willbetotallyrebuilt, exceptthesmallboilerhousewhich would have its building fabric mostly preserved. It is a request from the Suining Government to preserve the original building fabric. It has an exposed brick facade that has a brick pattern similar to English cross bond. It has the stretchers centred on the joints between the stretchers below them which is half a brick, and as a result the alternating stretcher courses are aligned.

The brick walls are structural to the building and the design incorporate structural reinforcements behind the original brick wall, preserving most of the existing building fabric except some new openings that needs to be made for the design to work.

The design create huge openings that serve as both display window and a “visual connection“ from inside to outside, as both people from the park and from insdie of the building can look into the display objects from the inserted display window.

The Boiler house has three floors, with the top floor being a mezzanine. A new staircase and an internal elevator are added to the buiding to comply to building regulations.
