Taichung Green Museumbrary (museum+library mixed use) (partnered with SANAA) | project info link

participated: 18 months / SD, DD, CD Phase | AutoCAD, Revit ( continue from CV on page I ) With team doubled up in CD phase, my duty shifted from leader position to more focusing on solving the intricate problems of design, providing design feedback to SANAA team and in charge of design coordination.

UL: ariel view from the main road UR: site plan LL: view from the main road LR: view from park

Budget: 3.7 B TWD , GFA: 58K m2 ( basement 30K m2, above ground 28K m2), FAR: approx. 35%, Location: Taichung City, Taiwan The city joined its local county into a new district with double up population increase. As the new identity and celebration, it envisions a new urban space combines library and fine arts museum into a compound cultural centre. The complex consists 8 building blocks range from 5 to 7 levels with the 2 levels basement in a greater footprint. A seismic isolation level locates in-between ground level and basement. The site slopes in a 3m level drop from the main road to the inner park region. | ■

Floor Plan " The proposal is elegantly simple, successfully making an otherwise large compound seem light, as if it were to float away. In plan, the spaces resemble a child's playful agglomeration of blocks, creating voids and plazas that suggest a collection of buildings that are equally active from the inside and outside. Reading areas, exhibits and gardens are dispersed as if to make no hierarchical distinction between programs, a design strategy characteristic of SANAA's practice." (from ArchiDaily)

Achievement Highlight / Frequent Tasks: • shift and shorten public driveway from inner park region to sit along the main road. • design all parking layout, access, slope and their structure assembly • design and shift large convention hall upon condiction change, and numerous space components planning. • design all intricate stairway routing through the moveable seismic level and join to the displaced core at ground level. • design and coordinate shaft structure integration which travel through the moveable seismic level. • design air intake/exhaust routing through intricate core assembly and minimize ground level surface opening.

Isolation Floor Plan • Seismic spherical sliding bearing at isolation level separate above-ground steel build from basement concrete structure. • This level is in 1:50 slope. It accommodates numerous intricate elements like core complex, routing stairway, escape sling, service duct and suspend machine pit from ground level.

■ transfer / basement stair ■ upper stair structure cage ■ escape sling ■ core with collision gap ■ stair with ground level collision gap ■ split stair ■ duct

7

Core Complex The basement beside inherent above-ground structural system but also runs its own grid. Transfer stair provides more leverage for above-ground building reposition with less destruction to basement planning and better spatial utilization.

1F

conditions: • for the continuous lift shaft structure extends across over seismic level from the basement to above-ground or conversely, a collision gap must be preserved at the extended end to accommodate maximum seismic spherical sliding bearing displacement (50 cm). • stair and duct structure can be horizontally split at isolation floor level with delicate detail or design as the continuous structure like above.

ISO

• the clear height at isolation floor level to top girder is approx. 1.4m and 1.7m to sub-beam. Thus, transfer route on this level all requires drop slab for adequate headroom. • the seismic damper sits on 2.5m square concrete pad connects to the under slab bearing wall which further integrates to the core structure. It also accommodates moveable design, service duct and assembles as the whole integral structure system.

Process - Core Complex Structure This session called for even column distribution and core compacting tweak. The following images show 2 validate variations I have provided as the design feedback to SANAA team. conditions: • B2-7F: cargo lift (C) and egress stair (A), both are steel structure extent from above-ground into basement • B2-GF: egress stair (B) and public lift (D), both are concrete structure extends from the basement to above-ground • for core (C) (A) on the above-ground section, its structural cage perimeter is optimal to reside on primary girder for better structural stability.

case 1: stair (A) (B) split at isolation level without additional isolation gap required at ground level. Cargo lift (C) extend into the basement with a collision gap preserved at the basement, conversely, same does the public lift (D) up stand from basement to ground level with collision gap preserved at ground level.

A

case 2: stair (A) (B) and lift (C) (D) are packed as a single core extent from above-ground steel structure into the basement. In consequence, the most compact core arrangement is attained for the above-ground planning.

• the 2.5m square pad of spherical sliding bearing involves integration into below slab bearing wall system which should keep away from isolation gap.

Process - Escape Sling Resolution The session called for escape sling allocation from basement to ground level. I have resolved by overlaying ground floor structure plan, isolation level plan and B1 plan to derive a coherent solution. conditions: • In the basement, without further structural reinforcement to any opening on 500 mm thick concrete flat slab, a maximum 900 mm square opening is allowed with the minimum 1800 mm edge to edge apart. • The escape sling enter and exit isolation level must be confined within the same structural boundary defined by top slab girder and sub-beam. Travel over this boundary is unlikely due to low clearance height. A core enclosure is also required on this perimeter to ensure fire safety. • Besides code permit space for escape sling placement, SANAA team preferred allocation at the sub corridor area, avoid major public space in the basement and only a few regions available for the ground level exit.

■ B1 ceiling escape sling ■ ISO ceiling escape sling ■ ISO enclosure ■ ISO beam layout

U: office area allocation M: main corridor area allocation D: public hall allocation

11

Process - AC Review The session called for AC drawing review to attain maximum ceiling height, its code compliance and other services implementation. I have ideated solutions of alternative routing, duct opening integration, marked up issue areas (revision clouds) and solved in further AC meetings.

The fresh air is drawn from ground level air intake into B2 primary and secondary AC room to supply entire complex. There is no air intake from any building facade. The image shows B2 AC duct routing with 3.5m clear height for the most area and 4m for the machine room.

■ AC send | ■ air supply | ■ air return | ■ exhaust | ■ 4 M ceiling height

12

B1 Level B1 clear height is 3m at the lower end with the top slab slopping up in 1:50 along the hill. At this level, AC is direct send from the nearby machine room. The air supply in B2 routes through the nearest core, rises to isolation level, travels to destination building core and rises again to each level AHU.

■ AC send | ■ air supply | ■ air return | ■ exhaust | ■ 4 M ceiling height

Process - Vehicle Access & Structure Solution structural conditions:

This session called for the car park access planning with structural assembly. I have completed the design and resolved as the following drawings.

B: typical driveway construction with concrete over soil

Access planning:

C: concrete finish over basement top slab. The underneath slab is flat inside the basement.

A: the primary entry driveway ramp is short in travel distance for the desired level drop, however, most of vehicle tracking path is attained in the approximate 1:8 slope.

D: for tree and grass planting, the soil require the minimum depth of 1.5m and 0.5m respectively. The underneath slab is slop in 1:50 inside the basement.

B: bus access was adjusted against the slope of its travel direction. It was originally along the site sloping direction, which causes uncomfortable side inclination while driving especially for the tall bus.

1: typical 500mm thick slab identical to the greater basement area 2: the long span cargo driveway requires 650mm thick top slab

C: the contour of bus parking lot require smoothly connect to zone D as demanded. RD

With the new building division recently completed and tightly integrated to current 2 decades old building, the deteriorated interior finish is expected for a renewal. This special room is at hospice division where the patient send to while dying process before biological fully stops. It isolates the medical or religious operation pressure from other patient and comforts the soul of deceased and descendant.Â

1. no extra trade job other than current GC 2. material selection from current trade only 3. low maintenance and dust free design

The design concept is the "circle of life" as a ring to slice the space in 2 separate half. Along the ring, there are elements of forest (natural), wood (earth), the god and doom (sky/heaven) for the different believer seek their own reading. The "religion" panel is changeable and integrates into the hidden cabinet with audio system. Â
