Exotic Crossbreds Deliver on Performance

D

Story By Lee Hart

ouble S Land and Cattle Ltd. strives for performance in their Simmental -cross beef herd. “Our focus really is on performance, calves with higher birthweights that wean in the 675 to 730 pound range, then after 90 days on a backgrounding ration, steers leave the yard around 900 to 950 pounds and head to a finishing program,” says Chris Sargent, who along with his family, ranches with his father Rodney. Rodney was born and raised near Mirror, east of Lacombe, and launched the family farm more than 50 years ago. They’ve been raising Simmentalcross cattle for roughly 35 years. “Simmental and Charolais cattle both work well in crossbreeding programs with British breeds,” says Rodney. “But from the outset, I wanted to maximize the pounds of beef produced and putting the two exotic breeds together has worked well for us.” The Sargent family runs 400 head of commercial cows, which are bred to both Simmental and Charolais bulls. They also prefer to select horned bulls for their breeding program — again striving for that added performance. They buy mostly red Simmental bulls and Full-French Charolais bulls.. “There aren’t a lot of horned bulls around, but they are there if you look for them,” says Chris. “We don’t focus all of our attention on EPDs either. We are more interested in how the animal looks and how they will fit into our program. We have bought bulls that have birthweights up to 125 pounds, and they have done very well.” “Horned bulls aren’t as popular these days either, so they are usually a bit cheaper too,” says Rodney. “We deal with a great group breeders and if they happen to have a horned bull calf that looks like he will perform well, they save it for us and let us know.” Cows in the Double S herd on average weigh around 1,600 pounds, and for the most part comfortably handle 110 to 120 pound calves at birth. They calve out on a 50-acre calving pasture with plenty of shelter and windbreaks. The Sargent family may have to assist the odd one if there is a mal-presentation or a complication due to twins, but the cows generally handle calving on their own. The Sargents manage a tight calving season. Beginning in late March, it is 60 days for the cows (between 75 and 80 percent calve within the first cycle) and 45 days for the heifers. “If you want to sell a nice even group of calves, you have to keep the calving time-frame tight,” says Rodney. With calving done by mid-May, cow-calf pairs remain at home for a couple more continued on page 12

weeks. Calves are processed, including dehorning, castration and vaccination, before being turned out on pasture in early June. While beef performance is important, the Sargents have chosen not to implant calves. “We figure by selecting the proper bulls, we are getting that extra performance from our bull genetics,” says Chris. The cow-calf and heifer pairs head out to two types of pasture. With hills and draws and plenty of “rough” areas, there is a considerable stand of native grass and they have tame alfalfa/ clover/orchard grass pasture as well. The first-calf heifers usually go onto 2.5 quarter sections of grass that is divided into four paddocks. They rotate through those pastures for the summer. About 70 cow-calf pairs are placed on rented pasture, while the rest of the cow herd goes onto to a full section of grass, where they graze from July until October. Depending on the year, calves are weaned in late October to early November. Bred cows and heifers head back out to pasture, while all heifers and steer calves are placed on the backgrounding program. The heifers and steers are separated with their own space over a 10 acre feeding paddock. Targeting a gain of about 2.5 pounds per day, the calves are fed a ration that includes alfalfa silage bales, a by-product called “sprouts” from the nearby Rahr Malting plant at Alix, and some barley as well.

liked to see.” “I think the key thing for us is that buyers keep coming back,” says Chris. “If our program wasn’t working, or if the calves didn’t do well at the feed-yard, that would tell us something, but we’re seeing the same buyers coming back year after year.” The heifers stay on a backgrounding program for another few weeks. Then the Sargents will select 70 to 85 of these heifers for replacements, regardless of color. The remaining heifers are fed at a slightly slower rate of gain until they are marketed in June, usually at the 950 pound mark. Meanwhile, cows and heifers remain on pasture after weaning before moving to the winter feeding program. The Sargents put up some dry grass hay, but most of their feed is baled silage including alfalfa, triticale and barley silage. Along with the silage bales, the ration fed to cows is supplemented with straw to help fill them up without getting over conditioned.

The Sargent family has developed a cross-breeding program that works well for them. “These two breeds compliment each other very well,” says Chris. “The two exotic breeds provide that extra performance. The Charolais terminal cross works well with the Simmental that still provides strong maternal traits. “I don’t see us making any major changes over the next 10 years,” says Rodney. “By then I’ll be 80 and my grandson says I should be able to retire,” he adds jokingly. “We will The Sargents have sold these backgrounded steers from the most likely stay within the 400 head range, perhaps a few more, because that seems to be about the minimize size with the economics of machinery. With our landbase and growing conditions, we have a breed combination that seems to work very well to produce those pounds of beef.”

yard for several years. By mid-January to early February they sell two liner loads of steers to a feedlot. The cross breeding program produces mostly tan colored calves, as well as a few that are all red and some all white. “There may be some color preferences, but the key is to have a nice uniform group of calves,” says Rodney. “Buyers like these calves because they perform well. We haven’t received many reports back, but one feeder told me these calves were gaining about four pounds per day in the finishing feedlot, which they really 12

What is an Optimal Birth Weight?

he 2017 bull sale season is quickly approaching, and with it comes the onslaught of bull sale catalogues that are delivered to us daily. In those catalogues there is often a large amount of information that will assist producers in selecting that new herd-bull including pictures, pedigree, birth information; EPDs in many cases, and occasionally carcass data. Of this information, birthweight is often the first number that is considered and in recent years has become a focus for some producers who believe that it is an assurance of calving ease and that lower is better. For some producers it has even taken precedent over performance, specifically weaning weight. The belief that a lower birthweight is the simplest way to ensure calving ease has caused some producers to ignore some very good bulls with slightly larger birthweights. These bulls will most likely calve just fine on mature cows and will add additional performance to their calves with heavier sale weights in the fall. That means dollars in a producer’s pocket and was especially evident during the fall 2016 calf run where lighter calves were often several hundred dollars lower than the price per head received for heavier calves. The American Angus Association recently held their Annual Convention and one of the featured speakers was Dr. Dan Shike, who is an animal scientist at the University of Illinois. During his presentation Dr. Shike stated that in his opinion, there is no “one size fits all” in the cattle business. That phrase applies to many things including calving ease and birth weight. As many of us have learned, cow size and body condition, along with calf shape and presentation of the calf, all figure into calving season success. What works for some producers may not work for others. To gauge what breeders at the convention thought was ideal for birthweight, Dr. Shike polled those in the room with approximately half of the attendees answering a series of questions via text message. One question was; what birth weight do you consider excessive for cows? The majority, fifty-six percent, indicated greater than 90 pounds, while thirty-three percent said greater than 100 pounds, and six percent said more than one hundred

24

and ten pounds. Only six percent indicated that they felt that greater than 80 pounds was excessive until the question changed to what the attendees felt was the maximum birth weight acceptable to their commercial customers. Then, twenty-nine percent of the crowd said that greater than 80 pounds was too big, indicating that selection pressure can be based on customer preference. Fifty-three percent, the majority, still said greater than 90 pounds. Another question was, what is too small of a birthweight and can we make it too small? The answer to this was a range from 40 pounds to 70 pounds being too light, with about half of respondents saying that less than 50 pounds was most definitely too light. Dr. Shike summed his presentation up by stating, that he was not sure that all producers need to target the same degree of calving ease, noting many herds have generations stacked with a high degree of maternal calving ease. The take-home message for breeders was that if environmental factors are favorable and there aren’t already calving problems, they probably don’t need to focus on double-digit EPD calving-ease bulls; and should also focus on other variables that affect calving ease, not solely targeting birth weight and to not keep driving birth weight down. Many of us who have been around this business for some time remember the old adage that a cow should be able to give birth to a calf that is six to seven percent of her body weight. Therefore, a 1450 pound cow should be able to deliver a hundred pound calf unassisted. If you are using 75 to 80 pound birthweight bulls on mature cows of that size you are likely not realizing the true production potential that cow can provide. While some producers may purchase several bulls each year, there are others who may only go through that process every three to four years. In each scenario, buying a new herd-sire is one of the most important decision making processes that a cattle producer undertakes. If you are in the market for bulls this year be sure to factor in all the variables and don’t overlook a bull that may suit your program simply because he might have been a couple of pounds heavier than what you feel is your ideal birthweight.

The Dance Steps of Genomics Part I: Using Genomics in Your Herd

By Jared Decker, PhD., Understanding Genomic Prediction Reprinted with permission from Brangus Publications

W

henever I hear the words “two-step”, my mind goes back to my teenage years when I danced with cute girls at the county fair. But, in this article we will be discussing a different type of two-step. There are two common methods, referred to as twostep or one-step, for including genomic (i.e. DNA) information into the genetic evaluations we use to estimate expected progeny differences (EPDs). Two-step genomic predictions use the genomic and pedigree information separately in two different prediction steps. In one-step genomic predictions, genomic and pedigree information is combined and used in a single step.

GE-EPDs, the genomic prediction is an indicator of an animal’s true EPD. In this approach, the pedigree EPD and the genomic prediction are calculated separately and then later combined to produce a GE-EPD. There are a few limitations with two-step GE-EPDs. First of all, thousands of animals with phenotypes and genotypes are needed to train the genomic prediction. Second, there needs to be a second set of animals with phenotypes and genotypes to validate the genomic prediction and estimate how much of the genetic variance it is explaining. Third, an appropriate method to blend the genomic prediction with the pedigree EPD is needed.

DNA INFORMATION IN BEEF BREEDING Information from DNA testing has been used for a long time in beef breeding. For several decades, DNA testing has been used to verify parentage information. This is a yes or no answer of whether the parents reported by the beef breeder are in fact the calf’s parents. If the parents do not match, this DNA data can often be used to identify the true parents.

SINGLE-STEP The approach used by the dairy industry, and later adopted by several beef breeds is called single-step. In single-step GE-EPDs, the pedigree and genomic information is combined in a single step to calculate GE-EPDs.

In 2010, DNA testing began to be used to accomplish much more for beef breeders. The use of DNA testing was used to create genomic predictions. Genomic predictions are much like other measures of genetic merit (i.e. EPDs) in that they predict the value of an animal as a parent of the next generation. But, genomic predictions use DNA data to accomplish this. Genomic predictions are combined with traditional EPDs to produce genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs). GE-EPDs are more reliable than traditional EPDs, especially for young animals with little data available. TWO-STEP The first approach to using genomic information in the beef industry is called the two-step approach. In this method, thousands of animals with both phenotypes (trait records) and genotypes (DNA data) are used to “train” a genomic prediction. In this training process, the effects of thousands of DNA variants are estimated. The genomic prediction (molecular breeding value) is then the sum of the effects for the DNA variants an animal inherited from its sire and dam. This genomic prediction is then used as a correlated or indicator trait to increase the accuracy of the EPD. An indicator trait is an indirect measure of an economically important trait; some examples include ultrasound data as an indicator of carcass merit or birth weights as an indicator of calving ease. In two-step

36

The process of estimating EPDs is often seen as an unknown “black box” for many beef producers. And in many regards, this is completely acceptable. I carry a little black box, a smart phone, around in my pocket constantly. I use it to talk to people to ask and answer questions. I use it to look up information on bulls or calculate breeding dates and due dates. I use it to share or read information on the internet. But, I have no idea how a cell phone works. What I do know is that my cell phone works. If you take nothing else away from this article, please know that EPDs do work. To better understand single-step, let’s peak inside the black box of EPD calculations. Using pedigree information, we estimate the relatedness between all of the animals in our genetic evaluation. Using the degree of relatedness between animals, we can separate the variation due to genetics from the variation due to different environments. This allows us to estimate the genetic merit of an animal. With the genetic merit (EPD) of the animal, we can make more accurate selection decisions based on inherited genetics. There is nothing tricky about estimating EPDs, it is simply using two forms of information, trait records and pedigree information, to separate performance into genetics and environment. We know that animals get 50 percent of their chromosomes (strings of DNA) from their father, or sire, and 50 percent of their

chromosomes from their mother, or dam. So, a calf is related 50 percent to its father and 50 percent to its dam. If we look at hundreds or thousands of calves, on average they share 25 percent of their DNA with their grandparents. The grandparent passes 50 percent of its DNA to the parent, and the parent passes 50 percent of its DNA to the calf. Fifty percent of 50 percent is 25 percent. So, in pedigree estimates of EPDs, all calves are assigned a relationship of 25 percent with their grandparents. But, for an individual animal, the amount of relationship with its grandparent can be quite different from 25 percent. There is a bell shaped curve around the average of 25 percent. Some animals share less than 25 percent with a particular grandparent. Some animals share more than 25 percent with a particular grandparent. The beauty of single-step genomic prediction is that we use the DNA information to measure the actual amount of relationship between the animals in our evaluation. Because we are no longer using expected averages, but are instead using realized amounts, the GE-EPD becomes more precise than a pedigree EPD. Rather than waiting for progeny records to help us figure out the random shuffle of genes and chromosomes an animal inherited from its father and mother, we can use DNA information to figure out the random sample of DNA the animal inherited. In single-step GE-EPDs pedigree and genomic information is combined to estimate the relatedness of the animals in our evaluation. Single-step also has limitations. First, we have to figure out how to express the relatedness measured by pedigree data and the relatedness measured by DNA data on the same base. Second, original single-step methods weighted each DNA variant equally, but new single-step methods are being developed to give more weight to important DNA markers. But, single-step approaches do not require a training and validation data set and all the available information is used simultaneously. Genomic predictions are simply more data added to genetic evaluations. Whenever we add more data to a genetic evaluation, the EPD accuracy improves. GE-EPDs provide an easy way to quickly improve the EPD accuracy especially for young animals.

calf earlier is great because there will be opportunity to foster one. If a cow looses one right at calving, rub the placenta on the calf to be grafted. If this fails, any of the other tricks including placing the skin of the dead calf over the live one can be attempted. This method works very well if an older calf dies and its smell is transmitted to the transplanted calf.

There is no doubt that if twins arrive, both born alive, are the same sex and you have a cow to foster one of the calves onto, life is great. However, we all know the opposite side of this as well. Twins coming malpresented (mixed sexed), you finally get them out (with or without veterinary assistance) and both are dead, the cow doesn’t clean, and then becomes a problem to rebreed. If we can minimize the bad of the last scenario and come up with more positives, twins would be a welcomed addition to any herd. Keep in mind they will always require more care, attention and management than in some cases.

Half the time, twins are mixed sex and about 90-95% of these heifer calves will be freemartins (very little development of the female reproductive organs) and will be sterile. Some freemartins you can definitely tell as the external genitalia are different with a real prominent clitoris, others look normal and may even cycle, but will not successfully breed. They possess more male influence, so freemartins will grow very well (like a bull calf). Producers generally will graft the freemartins and often the fact they were a twin, gets lost in the shuffle. A common mistake is selecting them for replacement status as they will be in the upper 25% for growth in the heifers. Mark their tag well with “Twin” written on it or use a different color tag to avoid this mistake. In the feedlot when they are identified, freemartins do better implanted with the steer implants.

ithin my practice I often hear producers complain about twins. Many of these complaints are brought on from our focus on the negative aspects that normally occur with having twins. Research has been done on a twin population over the last ten years in the U.S., and it was found that twins are a definite economic benefit. Both the positives and negatives will be outlined within this article, as well as, where some small changes in management within an operation, may improve the cost benefit of twins within a herd.

The original British breeds rarely twinned, but with the advent of the exotics, better nutrition and other factors, twinning has reached 8% in Simmentals, Charolais and Holsteins. This creates a lot of extra calves, which, if they reach weaning, can definitely improve the bottom line. The key is getting them out alive, grafting one to another cow, and then getting the cow rebred. Fortunately with the red and black Simmentals, twinning has decreased and even the traditional have less twins than in previous years. Dystocias from fetal malpresentation is the biggest reason twins have a lower survival rate at birth. Twin or triplet lambs and kids are seldom mixed up at birth, yet calves commonly are. When one ponders all the permutations and combinations of all the legs and two heads coming backwards and forwards, it is no wonder mix ups occur. With the U.S. twinning population, they selected and kept cows with a propensity to twin, they had over 60% twinning, so they knew to watch them close and jump in when problems developed. In a commercial or purebred operation, there are a few clues to help us. Twins can often drag down a cow’s condition, so not only should they be pulled from the main herd and fed with heifers, where there is less competition, they can also be observed then closer to calving. Cows which twin means they have ovulated two eggs, or an egg has split resulting in identical calves. Genetically, these cows have a high likelihood of doing it again. You often hear farmers say this cow has had three sets of twins in the last four years or she twins every second year. These are very common scenarios, so these cows with any past history of having twins, likewise should be monitored closer to when they calve. Any unusual behavior at calving, one should not hesitate to get that cow in and check her out. If cows are ultrasounded early, at around 50 to 60 days, twins can be picked up and these should definitely be noted and referred back to come calving season. The most common presentation for twins is one backwards and one forwards. With the backwards presentations, the likelihood of a full breech (tail first) is increased and these often require veterinary intervention. These are a great loss if the breech birth is first preventing the second calf from being born and both calves are born dead. With breech births, the cows appear in first stage labor for a long period of time, and often don’t initiate calving quick enough. In calving twins out, remember to follow the legs back to make sure they are from the same calf and the top calf is the one that MUST come out first. If you assist a cow during calving, especially on a backwards calf, routinely check the cow out for a second calf. Twins have a shorter gestation by about a week than a single birth, so it is not uncommon to have a higher percentage of twins early on in the calving season. It never hurts to start observing cows one week to ten days before the first one is due to avoid missing twins. Having an extra

64

Any cows that deliver twins are more prone to certain clinical diseases. Retained placenta, and metritis are the obvious ones, and because they are generally more run down, their immune system is compromised and conditions such as mastitis and ketosis are increased. If a cow is raising both calves at least for the first few days, giving them better quality feed, as well a shot of selenium and extra vitamin E, A & D may help with retained placenta. As mentioned, a higher number will be treated for retained placentas and watch for signs of depression, and a fever which may indicate metritis. Twins often extend the stretching limit of the uterus and it does not contract as well, or as fast after calving. This results in fetal membranes not being expelled, and the accumulation of microorganisms in the uterus; this combined with intervention at calving, can lead to metritis. Twins being born earlier in gestation, the fetal membranes are immature so don’t release as quick. This is why on almost all abortions, retained placentas are common sequelae as well. Work done several years ago showed using Gnrh or prostaglandins at two weeks after calving, may get these cows cycling earlier, and allow them to get bred on time. There will be more open cows after twins, or often they will take another cycle to get bred on average, so it is imperative to provide this extra care post calving. I would be remiss to not talk about colostrum supplementation with twins. Postnatal survival is lower with twins, and the greatest cause of this is insufficient consumption of colostrum. Perhaps the cow only mothers the first or second calf or simply has not produced enough to supply both calves. If a slow birthed, oxygen deprived calf seems kind of stupid, they may have a poor suck reflex. All this is where an extra supply of colostrum either saved from your herd, or using the good quality commercial colostrum such as “headstart” from the Saskatoon Colostrum Company is a real benefit to improving the survival of twins. Even if they both have sucked vigorously as a routine it doesn’t hurt to split a bag of high quality colostrum between the two calves. More pounds of calf weaned, per cow exposed is definitely possible if more twins are saved. The other negatives can be counteracted with good management and a little more work. If purchasing twin bulls for breeding, keep in mind birth weight is not relevant and they will not have more of a propensity to twin, but their heifer offspring at breeding will. Let’s pamper twins as we can’t really prevent them, and do our best to save them. Raise more pounds of beef, and get their mothers rebred. Here’s to a great calving season and no lost twins.

Saskatchewan Simmental Association

Carolyn McCormack (306) 697-2945 Box 591 Grenfell, SK S0G 2B0 sasksimmental@yourlink.ca

Congratulations to RBD Ranch!

RBD Ranch is a second generation family farm run by Barry & Juanita McKim and Dean & Karen McKim. Their father’s parents, Robert Kenneth and Gladys McKim started out their grain and cattle farm in 1957 with Barry and Dean joining the operation in 1978 and growing RBD Ranch into the cattle and grain operation that it is today. Barry and Juanita have three children and two grandsons. Their daughters Nadya and Nicole continue to be active in the cattle industry as well as 4H club leaders. Dean married Karen McKim and they have two children Karlie and Dustin McKim both are active in 4H, along with hockey and skating. RBD Ranch calves out 480 head of cattle, keeping 170 replacement heifers each year. They will keep 50 or 60 for themselves and sell the rest as breed heifers. They background the other calves till late January early February. In the winter they use swath grazing so the cattle can stay out till close to calving. In the summer they rotational graze their cattle on mostly prairie grass. RBD credits the maternal attributes to the bulls they choose. Simmentals stand out among the breeds for their feet and leg structure and their milking abilities. They breed in soundness to animals that many other breeds lack. The longevity of the bulls and their offspring are another attribute that keeps Simmental top of RBD’s list when it comes breeding time.

2016 SSA Commercial Breeder of the Year

Dean and Barry McKim and Families receiving their farm sign from SSA Pres. Ryan Lundberg at Agribition

They run a 60 day breeding program with calving beginning February with their bred heifers, with most being finished by the time the cows start in March. Over the years RBD Ranch has shown at Agribition winning Grand and Reserve championships with the bred heifer pens. They also have shown prospect steers in the early years. They will be selling their bred heifers this year on December 29, at Johnstone’s in Moose Jaw, SK. Anyone interested in having a look at their offering are welcome to come visit the farm just south of Milestone off of highway 6. RBD also has an extensive farming program that compliments the cattle side. This keeps them busy year around.

Simmental GeneticS excel in the Fall commercial ShowS & SaleS! Champion Simmental Bulls - Bull Pen Alley - JP Cattle Co.
