In a new feature column in the Cattle Call, the Saskatchewan Hereford Association will be featuring cattle operations across the province that have found value in utilizing the Hereford breed within their herd. These operations will be presented a slate of questions to further learn about their unique farming business, marketing decisions and future goals. We have created a list of producers that are newly established in the cattle industry. These operations are forward thinking, advocates for agriculture and have seen value in using Hereford to better their operations. If you have someone in mind that fits this description and would like to nominate them for a focus article, please email skhereford@sasktel.net.

PLEASE DESCRIBE YOUR OPERATION, LOCATION AND FAMILY MEMBERS INVOLVED?

We live in the SE corner of Saskatchewan and along with our sons Dane and Kade we own and operate Twisted T Cattle Company where we breed approximately 400 females annually. Grass cattle as well as a direct-to-consumer beef business are also a large part of our operation on top of the cow calf side of things.

WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT BREEDING PROGRAM IN TERMS OF BREEDS UTILIZED, BREEDING SEASON AND ANY DIFFERENCES IN MANAGEMENT APPROACH BETWEEN HEIFERS AND MATURE COWS?

We have a predominantly angus-based herd that is then crossed with Herefords as well as some Simmental. We start to calve at the end of April. Heifers run with the main herd year-round except for breeding season.

WHAT ARE YOUR SUMMER AND WINTER FEED RESOURCES?

Cows are calved out on stockpiled native pasture with some supplemental hay as well. After branding in the first part of June cattle are moved through rotational grazing paddocks through the summer months then residual grazing farmland in the fall after harvest and the winter is spent going through the corn grazing paddocks as well as fed hay, straw and greenfeed cocktail mixes that are sewn in rotation with the corn to fix nitrogen and help reduce fertilizer costs.

HOW AND WHEN DO YOU MARKET YOUR STEER/HEIFERS OR REPLACEMENT/BRED FEMALES?

Steers are typically sold in the fall via online auction or live auction while select groups of replacement heifers are sold private treaty off the farm as well as kept for us while the rest move into our grass program where they will be sold late the next summer or put on feed to be marketed as beef through Amy’s direct to consumer beef company where she sells Halves quarters as well as select cuts.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU UTILIZED HEREFORD GENETICS AND WHAT STRENGTHS DO THEY CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR BREEDING PROGRAM?

We have had Hereford influence in our herd for over 15 years mainly with bulls, but a few females have been purchased as well.

HOW DO YOU THINK THE BREED COMPLIMENTS OTHER BREEDS IN A COMMERCIAL CROSSBREEDING SCENARIO?

We feel that the Hereford cross works excellent in our operation as costs continue to rise, driving inputs down is a focus and the Hereford influence helps us as they are a very efficient animal that can utilize and convert forage to lean meat very well. Along with the docility of the breed that makes them very easy to handle and work with year-round as our boys are 13 and 11 having cattle that are easy to work with is a must.

ARE THERE CHARACTERISTICS ABOUT THE BREED THAT YOU THINK ENHANCE PROFITABILITY IN A TIME OF INCREASING INPUTS, FEED COSTS, ETC.?

The ability of the Hereford cattle to survive and thrive in our harsh winter environments enable us to continue to challenge them to work harder for us and increase profitability to our operation along with our angus we feel that either as open calves or the following year as bred heifers.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE BREEDERS CONTINUE TO IMPROVE OR EMPHASIZE IN ADVANCING THE BREED?

I feel that breeders should continue to emphasize on the characteristics that make the breed successful witch are do ability, docility and efficiency to name a few whiles continuing to improve on foot and udder structure which is critical in the longevity of the animal.

WHAT SHORT-TERM GOALS OR OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU ENVISION FOR YOUR OPERATION IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS?

In the next 5 years our goal for our operation is to continue to expand and diversify while finding new ways to lower inputs while increasing the profit per acre as well as expanding the finished beef side of the business and find new ways to market and promote the best quality protein on the planet.

Hereford cattle and enthusiast took to Regina, SK for the 51st Annual Canadian Western Agribition held November 28 to December 3, 2022. Judge Hampton Cornelius, La Salle, CO and associate judge Nathan Frost sorted through 109 Polled entries and 33 Horned entries.

The SHA board handed out an exhibitor survey, with the intentions of either improving or coming up with a new event to promote the Hereford Breed. The results of the survey will be taken and reviewed at the SHA annual meeting later this year. A virtual whole membership survey will be sent out via email in January. We encourage all feedback as the board works to create exciting opportunities and events that interest and benefit the membership.

Again, it would not be possible to put on such events, without the countless number of volunteers and sponsors, from everyone who helped from processing to announcing the show, we say Thank You. A big Thank You goes to the CWA board of director and staff for putting on a first class show. We look forward to seeing everyone at next years, 52nd annual Canadian Western Agribition November 20-25, 2023.

Hi, my name is Kenzie Airriess and I am 9 yrs old. I live on a farm by Wadena, SK. Our farm name is Airriess Acres. We raise Purebred Polled Hereford cattle alongside our commercial herd and we also grain farm.

I have been apart of the SJHA for 3 years and have been to two Bonanzas as well as a few Beef a Ramas. My favorite memories are meeting my friends as well as new ones and competing in events and learning to get better at doing each one. I really enjoyed the activities at the Bonanzas especially the one at Weyburn when we had to run around as a team and try and catch a pig.

I am in competitive dancing with ballet, jazz and tap. I am going to four dance competitions this spring. I also enjoy riding my horse Annabelle. I really enjoy showing cattle and I hope to go to a few spring shows with my heifer and steer.

I have been a member of our Tisdale 4-H Beef Club since I was 6 years old. I am finally a Junior this year and so can take a heifer and a steer. My favorite thing about 4-H is learning from the older members and public speaking. I made it to provincial public speaking last year. I am hoping to get that far again this year with public speaking.

When I grow up I want to do something that involves working with animals. I said I wanted to be a farmer but my parents told me that I need to go and get an education first.

My favorite thing about Hereford cattle is how quiet and easy going they are. I also have a soft spot for those goggled eyed heifers as I am always trying to negotiate on trying to own one every year from my parents.

Cattle

Hi my name is Ty Airriess and I am 10 years old. I live on a farm by Wadena, SK and our farm name is Airriess Acres. We raise Purebred Polled Hereford cattle as well as grain farm. We also have a commercial herd.

I have been apart of the SJHA for 4 years. I have been at a few Beef A Ramas as well as Bonanzas. I went to the Bonanza in Weyburn as well as in Camrose. I really enjoy learning from older members and meeting new kids my age that have the same interests as me.

I am a part of Tisdale 4-H Beef Club and have been a member since I was 6 years old. My favorite things about 4-H is learning new grooming techniques as well as learning about judging cattle. I also enjoy competing at events whether its public speaking or showing cattle.

I enjoy playing hockey as well as baseball with my classmates. At home I like helping out at the farm whether its processing cattle or helping with grain side of things. I also enjoy quading around the yard and checking cows. I enjoy going to cattle shows and showing our cattle.

When I grow up I hope to make it to the NHL and if that doesn’t pan out then I will plan to take over the farm as I enjoy the cattle and grain farming but I know I should go and get a trade or education first. I am not sure yet though what I would get.

My favorite thing about Hereford cattle is how docile they are and how nice they are to work with. I always enjoy calving time as you never know what kind of markings a calf is going to have when its born.

The 44th Edition of Stockade Round-Up at the Lloydminster Exhibition was held Tuesday November 1st to Friday November 4th. This was the first show for new LAEA Ag Manager Dana Larouche, and with the help of Exhibition staff and volunteers it was a great success. This year the Hereford Show was moved to Thursday morning and was judged by Katie Songer. Hereford Entries were up for the 2022 show with a solid representation of the breed. The largest challenge of the show this year was the coming of winter right after move in. Anyone with interest in the show can direct inquiries to the Lloydminster Exhibition.

I didn’t think I was good enough to be a photographer with ShowChampions. Until a friend gave me the same advice I dish out to others: “Just apply, what’s the worst that could happen?” My job interview was the Calgary Stampede, believe it or not. I had just a few days to prove myself, learn, grow, and give them a great impression. It went well. Very well!

It was 2016, and the world’s most trusted livestock photographer put ME at the “Super Bowl of Cattle Shows” Hereford backdrop. I had to leave it all on the table! Exhaustion in a place of bliss can teach you plenty if you let it. You either win or you learn. Within a few short months I had completed all 16 days of the National Western Stock Show, 20 days of the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo, and three weeks of the largest livestock show in the world in Houston, Texas.

I can’t tell you how much I learned, but my skills and abilities were tested by long days photographing hundreds of animals, multiple species, and dozens of show rings. One thing is for sure: your confidence better grow, or you can fade into the background quickly. People trust that you are in control and know exactly what to do. I grew quickly by taking on every challenge that I was introduced to and by learning to receive feedback and critique. There is always something new to learn.

The opportunity doors kept opening, and I kept walking through. Sometimes people don’t see the opportunity as it lies right in front of them. You have to know when to say no, and when to say yes…on repeat. I try to live as if I won’t have the opportunity to experience things again, as often we

don’t. Saying no one time can shut down an amazing relationship you could have had for 20 years. I photograph with that in mind. I photograph as if it is the last chance…

When the first show season cooled off, I found myself in an awkward place. I was in the middle of a very trying personal time, in a new city, newly divorced, and struggling to find an employment opportunity. I am sure I applied for 50 jobs that summer and was called for one interview. I was discouraged.

Luck is when opportunity and preparation meet. That’s when Allan Browarny, the CEO of ShowChampions, asked me about my editing abilities. I had my own business as a portrait photographer prior to ShowChampions, so I was fluent in postprocessing photographs. I demonstrated my talents at the time to Allan, and the rest really is history! I

quickly became the senior editor for Mr. Browarny. The Browarny name is affluent around the globe, and now I was the one carefully placing that name on each photograph and delivering to clients from Alberta to Brazil, New Mexico, Australia, Chile, Thailand, and more.

That year was completely wild and equally fantastic! I was soon travelling for on-farm photoshoots, having photographed my first cattle dispersal that fall. I travelled with and assisted Allan on select on-farm photoshoots, learning how he handles customers, business, video, and photoshoots. I knew I always had to take every ounce of intel I could. It is akin to being able to travel with and play alongside Gretzky in his day. There can be many exhausting and uncomfortable moments, but it sure is rewarding! Allan and I travel and work well together. We soon took on many international and on-farm photoshoots together, building the ShowChampions brand wherever we saw opportunity. Doing so has built many once-in-a-lifetime relationships and friendships. Since 2016, these are some of the events and places I have had the pleasure to work:

I am sure it was my parents; they encouraged making something great with mediocre ingredients. That’s what our culture was about. Descendants

of Ukrainians, my Mother and Father made sure I knew how to “do things well.” It truly takes the same amount of time to do something well as it does to do it poorly. I was raised in East Central Saskatchewan on a multi-generation mixed farming operation. Teamwork and getting the job done no matter the circumstances are something we in the livestock industry can all relate to.

I purchased my first camera when I was in my early teens, sending multiple rolls of film to the city with my Mother on a monthly basis. Like anyone with new gear, I photographed everything as it was, learning to make it look its very best. With much trial and error I discovered how to find the “beauty in the beast.” I am a self-taught photographer who benefited from the best mentors I could find. We are very privileged to live in the age of the internet. Google was and still is my university. The subject does not matter, but there is always a way to make it look its best. My high school art teacher instilled in me that all art is a matter of light and perspective. A great metaphor for life, too!

Presentation of your subject is the first and major thing to consider— being prepared, having help, and keeping everything clean. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Do the very best with what you can at that moment. You will invest so much of your time and money sourcing genetics, marketing, breeding, feeding, fitting, etc., but it all comes down to the final presentation, which is the photograph. You don’t have a second chance to make a first impression. It is so important in this competitive market that you grab the viewer’s attention as quickly as possible. A photograph is single-handedly almost always the thing that will draw customers to your farm or ranch to view the animals.

When photographing cattle, consider the setting and backgrounds. Animals up against a fence or structure will become lost. It is said that the background will suck all the power out of the animal. Keep distractions behind the animal(s) at a minimum. If you must have a

fence, the less fence the better. It is understandable that not all cattle are used to an electric wire, but if you can at least keep the cattle from standing up against a background they will look more present and stronger. I find that distractions in the background are just that: distractions that will prevent the viewer from focusing on the main character, your animal.

Photoshoot day can certainly be stressful. However, it is my job to make sure the client has an enjoyable experience. It comes with the territory that there is a lot of work, expectations, and money wrapped up in photo day, but a crew that does not jive well together just does not pull the best out of the scenario. I cannot stress the importance of having keen photo pen help with great cattle sense and

knowledge of animal energy. Be sure to set expectations, be clear about what it is you need, and practice patience. A great photographer is truly like an orchestra conductor. When I shoot, I am acutely aware of what the animal is going to do next, where the photo pen help is at, how to direct said help, and where I need to be to get the shot.

Sunshine is the ideal lighting to photograph animals. It brings out the dimension, shape, and muscle of cattle and brightens up the whole scene. Green grass or any type of colour in your scene can really make a difference in the final outcome. I like to utilize contrast if I can.

Marketing photos, group shots, and stock photos are equally important. You want photos that show off your program in its entirety: a great group shot of your bull pen offering; cow-calf pairs in the summer with a big calf at side its mother on green grass; herdbull photographs; scenic images of your ranch; really any great image that entices the audience and might encourage customers to visit or purchase from your program. A great stock photo or scenic image

showing off your groups of cattle can really go a long way in instilling the perception of your program and selling your genetics! I do always encourage people to hire professionals. It is an opportunity to have the job done efficiently, professionally, and allows you to focus on what you do best in your day to day. Having that extra network of people to discuss and showcase your program is also a benefit.

When I am not travelling, my favourite place to be is with my son Wagner and spouse Ryan at our home near Saskatoon. Ryan is a professional auctioneer in the cattle industry, and we spend a lot of our time at cattle sales and industry gatherings. Wagner enjoys speed skating, building Lego, and has recently taken up archery. We do have some commercial cattle, and we enjoy the falltime as it allows us to spend some spare time in the barn preparing sale heifers. That is truly our hobby. Our life is very full, but when we manage to be together it sure is special!

The Better Your Beef strategy will feature prominently in 2023 and the foreseeable future for the Canadian Hereford Association. It is more than a marketing campaign; it sets direction for the breed as a partnership between breeders and the Association.

Where it benefits the Hereford breed, we will partner with service providers, industry groups and other breed associations. This is to establish the identity of the seedstock genetics sector as being collaborative, forward thinking, service oriented and efficient. We need to ensure that we provide services that allow breeders to develop cattle that are suited to their environment, opportunity to make a profit and reduce any burdens associated with registering and transferring cattle.

As we work toward an efficient modern registry system, we are making a few changes. Effective January 1, 2023, the CHA will no longer require the original registration certificate to be returned to the office to complete transfers or corrections. We still require the same detailed information to maintain the accuracy of our registry and to avoid any unnecessary errors. Authorizations can be submitted via email to info@hereford.ca, contact the CHA office for more information. As we are continually developing new registry programs and processes, we may have a few bumps in the road but in the end will strengthen the system creating a better user experience for CHA members.

Youth development is a key pillar of the Better Your Beef Strategy, establishing connections where Hereford is the breed of choice for upcoming generations of cattle producers. The Bonanza show hosted by the Canadian Junior Hereford Association has been the gold standard of youth livestock events in Canada for over 40 years. We want to ensure that our youth have an opportunity to network, build lasting friendships, develop skills, and choose to remain in agriculture. We are exploring the development of new programs focusing on young adults who are past the age of participating at Bonanza and interested in an agriculture career but need an opportunity to remain engaged in the system.

Bonanza ‘Head Strait to the East’ will be hosted in Prince Edward Island at the Rodd Brudenell River Resort from July 25-29, 2023. This is part of ‘Hereford Week in Canada’ and the Canadian Hereford Association will be hosting its summer meetings and AGM. This year we will feature guest speakers and information sessions on topics relating to the beef industry in general and those specific to Hereford breeders. There will be activities for a wide range of interests, so I welcome you to attend whether you are exhibiting cattle or interested in enjoying PEI in the summer.
