CANADIAN HEREFORD ASSOCIATIONReport by michael latimer- executive director
The upcoming year looks promising for the beef cattle industry. The strong prices seen last year for commercial feeder and replacement cattle are projected to continue through 2024. This market outlook is great news for cattle producers as we head into a new year. Hopefully we can get some timely rains and a little luck along the way. The CHA continues its path of modernization to meet the needs of the beef industry of today and tomorrow. The board of directors approved the development of a new Hereford registry/database system that will be released in 2024. This will transform how the association, membership, and commercial producers’ interface. A new series of recognition awards including the CHA Honour Roll, CHA Trailblazer Award, and the CHA NextGen Breeder Award were approved. These represent the past, present and future of significant contributions to the Hereford breed in Canada. The board also approved a new set of Mark of Excellence (MOE) show guidelines with a new awards program. The new program will award show animals of the year across several categories designed to encourage Hereford breeders participation at livestock exhibitions across Canada.
ingredient for productive crossbreeding programs. Through collaboration and cooperation with industry partners we can add value to Hereford cattle through opportunities that we couldn’t do alone. This includes aligning with other breed associations, service providers and others. A Hereford Baldy program focused on the commercial cattle sector that will use genomic technology to assist in the development and selection of high-quality Hereford-cross commercial heifers is being developed and will be released in 2024. This is in preparation for the rebuilding of the Canadian beef herd that is anticipated in the next few years. Bonanza will be hosted in Brandon, Manitoba from July 23-27, 2024. There will be juniors from a variety of backgrounds and ages competing. With the central location we are anticipating a large turnout of animal entries and kids attending from coast to coast. The Bonanza open show is a recognized MOE Show and points accumulated will go toward the new CHA Show Animal of the Year awards. The CHA Annual General Meeting will be held in conjunction with Bonanza and will take place in the evening of July 26, 2024. I look forward to seeing you there.
The CHA continues to focus on achieving the goals outlined in the Better Your Beef strategy. ‘Must Win Battle 2’ states that Hereford be a maternal

A BREEDER’S
Veterinary Perspective
IMPROVING REPRODUCTIVE PERFORMANCE IN YOUR HERD - STARTING WITH HEIFER MANAGEMENT By Colin Palmer, DVM MEET DR. PALMER Dr. Colin Palmer is an Associate Professor of Theriogenology (Animal Reproduction) at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Originally from Nova Scotia, Dr. Palmer worked in mixed practices in Ontario and British Columbia and has owned/operated a practice in Saskatchewan. Dr. Palmer along with his wife Kim and children Lauren, Emily and Carter run a herd of purebred Red Angus cattle under the KC Cattle Co. name.
A widely accepted management goal is to have heifers birthing their first calves by 24-months of age. Add a few months on to grow her first calf and you come up with at least 2½ years of development and maintenance costs that are now equivalent to the net revenue of 6 commercial calves. Recouping those costs points to longevity of the cow herd being a key variable in the profitability equation. There are almost no good financial reasons to keep an open cow as she will only have the additional burden of her current-year maintenance costs added to her costs of development and will not break-even. A nation-wide survey of American cow-calf producers conducted over 15 years ago pointed to non-pregnancy as the number 1 reason for culling with age/ bad teeth coming in a close second position. Together they accounted for 2/3rds of the culls. Cow productivity peaks at about 5 to 7 years of age and drops off more sharply after 10 years. Culling open cows is always a good thing to do but if more than 10 to 15% of your open culls are young cows then there is a need to consider what went wrong. Low level attrition in a cow herd can be due to a number of problems including difficult calvings; c-sections; prolapses; temperament; udder problems, cancer eye; poor-doing calves and other issues such as bad feet which when combined accounted for an additional 15% of the reasons for culling in that survey; often before these cows reach their prime.
Careful selection and development of replacement heifers is vital to improving herd productivity. The chances of establishing a pregnancy at a heifer’s first heat, or pubertal estrus, are about 20% less than that of her already cycling herd mates. Heifers need to be cycling regularly at the beginning of the breeding season which means that puberty should have occurred at least 2 months before turnout. By the 3rd or even 4th heat conception rates improve greatly. Pubertal status at the onset of the breeding season is one of the most important factors affecting conception rates. Several years of experience breeding heifers in timed artificial insemination (AI) programs has shown me that a proportion of heifers will not have reached puberty in time to be feasibly included. Although, timed AI protocols utilize treatments to encourage follicular recruitment, development and ovulation results show that pregnancy rates are much better in animals that are cycling and display estrus behaviour before breeding. Follicles produce estrogen that is responsible for causing estrus behaviour. If follicles are too small, they will produce very little estrogen, therefore, estrus behaviour is unlikely. Furthermore, small follicles may or may not respond to ovulation-inducing therapy and those that do have been associated with poor conception rates. Several factors influence the onset of puberty in heifers. Heifer age and body weight are the most important, direct determinants. Breed, cow family and sire, including sire’s

e
scrotal circumference are indirect factors that influence the age and weight when puberty will occur. Amongst the fertile, maternal breeds it is not uncommon to hear of heifer calves becoming pregnant while still nursing the dam. Within a herd these cases typically represent only a fraction of the heifer calves, and they are almost invariably the oldest and biggest. However, any underfed heifer including these precocious heifers will reach puberty later, at an older age, than her better-fed contemporaries despite her genetic makeup. Since body weight can have such a profound effect on age of puberty a good rule of thumb is that heifers should be developed to 2/3rds (about 65%) of her predicted mature weight at the time of breeding to ensure that they have reached puberty. Knowing what your mature cows weigh is very important. Frame sizes, hence mature weights, can vary by several hundred pounds within breed. Selection of sires with larger scrotal circumferences translates to earlier puberty and increased lifetime fertility in female progeny. Earlier onset of puberty led to the idea that heifers could be grown to 50 - 55% of mature weight to save on feed costs. Initially, most research seemed to support this theory, but careful examination of the results suggests otherwise. In one study fewer heifers developed to 53% of mature weight were cycling at the beginning of a 45-day breeding season compared to their herd mates developed to 58%, but there was no difference in pregnancy rates. However, another study compared heifers with a more substantial, 10%, difference in pre-breeding weights. Heifers developed to 55% and 65% of mature weight at breeding had no differences in pregnancy rates at the end of an 80-day breeding season, but it was noteworthy that significantly more heifers developed to 65% of mature weight were pregnant within the first 45 days of the breeding season and that the lighter weight heifers took longer to begin
normal estrous cycles following their first calves. Not surprisingly in yet another study, substantially fewer heifers at 50% of mature weight established pregnancies in the first 30 days of the breeding season compared to herd mates developed to 55%. Knowing how big your mature cows are is an important consideration. Five percent of a 1400-pound mature weight is only 70 pounds – 65% of 1400 pounds is 910 pounds, whereas 55% is just 770 pounds. Targeting your heifer development program toward a 65% of mature weight at breeding will ensure that more heifers will get pregnant early in the breeding season and have a greater chance of remaining in the herd as productive females. Very young heifers that are not likely to make 50% of mature weight by breeding season are not viable replacements. Using this example, the nonviable heifers would weigh 700 pounds or less. Reproductive tract scoring by transrectal palpation is a simple yet very worthwhile procedure; especially, when selecting heifers for timed AI programs. Ultrasonography may seem like the more modern and technologically advanced way to perform a reproductive exam, but uterine tone and texture can only be appreciated by touch. Assessment of the size and texture of the uterine horns and palpating the ovaries for follicles and corpora lutea (CLs) will reveal those heifers that are cycling. To ensure success, retain the cycling heifers for breeding and remove the others. When is the best time to administer vaccines to heifers prior to breeding? For many, a convenient time is when heifers are being put through the chute for breeding programs but is this safe? Recommendations tend to vary depending upon whether a modified live or a chemically altered, inactivated (killed) virus vaccine is being used and whether it is the first vaccination being administered to naïve animals, or a 2nd (booster) vaccination. Modified live virus vaccines have been shown to have a negative effect on corpus luteum

development, the ovarian structure responsible for maintaining pregnancy, that may last for as much as 2 months. In a study which included nonvaccinated control heifers, heifers vaccinated with the same killed virus vaccine 36 and 8 days before breeding, heifers vaccinated 8 days before breeding with the killed virus vaccine and heifers vaccinated 8 days before breeding with the modified live vaccine it was evident that vaccination with a MLV vaccine just 8 days before breeding had a negative effect on pregnancy status. In a comparison of MLV and killed virus vaccine administered to heifers 30 days before a timed AI heifers vaccinated with the MLV had lower pregnancy success following AI than those vaccinated with killed virus vaccine or heifers not vaccinated at all. Chemically altered, inactivated virus vaccine has been known to impart a weaker immune response than MLV vaccines but have been proven to impart enough of a response to provide adequate protection from abortion during the subsequent
pregnancy. Many studies comparing the effect of pregnancy status suffer from having too few animals to show a real difference. A very robust, well-designed study where cows received a booster vaccination of either a MLV vaccine or a chemically/ altered inactivated virus vaccine administered between 27 to 89 days before AI showed that pregnancy results were significantly better in the killed virus vaccine group amongst animals vaccinated with either vaccine less than 6 weeks before breeding; however, the negative effect disappeared when the MLV vaccine was administered six weeks or more before AI. Therefore, sound advice is to complete your MLV virus vaccine protocol 6 weeks to two months before breeding. If this is not possible use of a chemically altered, inactivated vaccine is a very good way to prevent pregnancy loss in the herd. Reference: Perry G. Improving reproductive management in cow herds. Embryo Evolution Transplant technology fuels a career for Roger Davis Dr. Roger Davis reflects on what he’s learned after decades as a leader in the embryo transfer and export business By: Tara Mulhern Davidson
Dr. Roger Davis, based in Alberta, continues to influence embryo transplant technology in Canada and around the world. Photo: Davis-Rairdan Embryo Transplants Ltd. Canadian beef cattle genetics have improved over decades as trends, production methods and market access channels evolve. Dr. Roger Davis, one of the founders of Davis-Rairdan Embryo Transplants, an elite embryo export business, is synonymous with the advancement and movement of beef cattle genetics. Throughout Davis’s notable career, he has been actively involved in spearheading new technologies, ideas and marketing opportunities. Based out of Crossfield, Alta., Davis-Rairdan is recognized around the world for its role in reproductive technology for domestic and international cattle customers.
Inspired by innovation
Growing up on a small Angus operation near Wilcox, Sask., Davis was interested in veterinary medicine at a young age. “From the time I was 10 or 11, I always wanted to be a veterinarian.”

Davis’s father inspired him to follow his passion for purebred cattle. “I loved the cattle industry and grew up showing beef cattle of all breeds.” The connections Davis made during his studies at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, Sask., fostered a keen interest in genetic improvements. During vet school, he had a front-row seat to exciting growth in Canada’s seedstock sector in the late 1970s and early 1980s. “I was very fortunate. At the time, Dr. Reuben Mapletoft was doing research in embryo transplant which was a new technology,” says Davis. He regards Mapletoft as a pioneer in embryo technology and views him as an influence to this day. “My late business partner, Scott Rairdan, and I both were quite enthralled with it, and he took us under his wing and taught us as much as we could learn.” Following graduation, Davis, along with fellow veterinarian Dr. Rairdan, established a large animal practice that included embryo transplant and other reproductive technology. In the early days, Davis recalls how they put in long hours during calving dealing with C-sections, prolapses and dystocia, but adds that now, calving difficulties have decreased, thanks to better genetics. “It’s been an unbelievable change over the years,” he says. “Hats off to seedstock producers that really got it together and are producing a product that is pretty foolproof.”
Benefits of breeding technology
Riding the wave of interest generated by the arrival of continental breeds into Canada in the 1970s, Davis and Rairdan were quick to see the potential of embryo transplant. They soon focused exclusively on embryo transplant and reproductive work. “It was early on in the industry and Canada was a leader,” Davis says. “I was fascinated by the technology and could see how it could really be used to take advantage of the female genetics the way they do with semen in bulls.”
“The cool thing about the embryo transplant industry is — worldwide — it’s an extremely small group of people. From day one, the researchers and people in the industry had an unwritten rule to share new discoveries.” – Dr. Roger Davis. Photo: Davis-Rairdan Embryo Transplants Ltd. Cattle Call 21

2024-01-08 2:46:43 PM
Davis started using embryo transplants in his own small polled Hereford herd and saw that he could quickly build quality. “When I started my herd, I only had 40 cows but I produced 100 purebred calves every year. In six years, I went from buying my first female to where I was premier breeder at Agribition.” Davis says one of the greatest benefits of embryo transplant is that it is safe from a biosecurity perspective. “When exporting animal genetics of any kind — whether it is semen, live cattle or embryos — embryos are the safest. Canada did some groundbreaking research that showed that if embryos were processed properly there was virtually zero risk of transmitting disease.” This became critical for Davis in a post-BSE marketplace when the domestic market dropped sharply overnight. “I had to focus elsewhere in the meantime and figure out how to keep everyone busy and employed at my office,” he says. “Two years prior to BSE, there was a phenomenal study released (from the U.K.) that proved that BSE couldn’t be transmitted in embryos. We focused more on that and started a large-scale export marketing program internationally.” Davis says that embryo collection is a valuable way to preserve genetics in the event of an on-farm disaster such as a disease outbreak. “It’s a phenomenal way of banking genetics that could be used down the road.” There are challenges that come with embryo transplant programs, namely managing recipient cows for success. “There can be huge differences from farm to farm,” says Davis, who recommends that producers source recipient dams from top-end herds. “Don’t skimp on recipient cows; that’s the expensive part.”
A close-knit community
“The cool thing about the embryo transplant industry is — worldwide — it’s an extremely small group of people. From day one, the researchers and people in the industry had an unwritten rule to share new discoveries.” He credits the International Embryo Technology Society as being instrumental in the success and rapid growth of the industry in the 1980s. “I think the collaboration and sharing and admitting that some things don’t work really well is very helpful to the industry overall,” says Davis. A willingness to share both failures and successes allowed the sector to flourish and he says the technology improved tenfold because of that collaborative mindset. Before e-commerce was a reality, Davis conducted many valuable export deals remotely via fax machine, sending embryos around the world to clients whom he had never met. Language barriers were also a common issue in Davis’s global workplace. His inaugural trip to Mexico coincided with his first experience performing non-surgical embryo transplants. “I spent two days out in the jungle with a generator and a tent for a lab with a microscope and no one spoke English.” The task resulted in an exceptional 64 per cent pregnancy rate and a lasting friendship with the ranch operators. In the early 1990s, Daryl “Doc” Seaman and Davis found an opportunity to export Red Angus genetics into Hungary to help build the country’s beef cattle industry. At the time, there were no more than 30,000 beef cows. Today, Hungary’s national cow herd has grown to more than 300,000 head, many of which have Canadian genetic origins. The project also included collaboration with Olds College to provide training in management practices including grazing and genetic selection.

Find good people
A long, successful career doesn’t happen without some challenges but Davis says it’s important to persevere through failure. “If you’re passionate about it, don’t give up. Put your head down and go forward, and believe it or not, when you look back on it, it’s not as big a deal as it seemed at the time.” Davis’s veterinary partner passed away suddenly in 1995, which was an unexpected crisis to work through, but it prompted a core shift for Davis. “I was a micromanager until my partner was killed, but then I had to learn to delegate. “At the time I wasn’t sure what to do, but my wife encouraged me to carry on,” he says. “Fortunately, I had the right people around me. One of the biggest successes of my life is having great staff, and delegation is the secret to success.”
In 2017, Dr. Adam Schierman, took the reins of Davis-Rairdan. Roger Davis continues to stay involved, working as a consultant. Photo: Davis-Rairdan Embryo Transplants Ltd.
Over his career, he sought advice from close friends, including Doc Seaman, a well-known businessman, and one of the first owners of the Calgary Flames. “He really instilled in me that you have to surround yourself with good people and let them take some initiative. He told me, ‘They’re going to screw up, and if they don’t, they aren’t making enough decisions.’” Davis also notes Stan Grad of Soderglen Ranches was a strong supporter of their vision. “Stan really encouraged Scott Rairdan and myself to venture out in 1980. He always had some great advice.”
A fertile future
In 2017, Davis sold Davis-Rairdan International to Dr. Adam Schierman, DVM, but still maintains a role as a consultant and helps at the transplant centre during busy times. “He’s really taken the business to a new level,” Davis says of Schierman’s success. “We have a very similar mindset and thought process,” he says, adding that the transition was carefully thought out. Davis says it is important to have an exit strategy, make a plan and invest in a proper evaluation to make the transaction smooth. “A lot of people wait too long before they sell or retire. It’s no different than dispersing your purebred cattle herd. Timing is everything.” Davis says the future remains bright for reproduction services at Davis-Rairdan. He says there is a growing gap between mediocre and high-end cattle, and as a result, seedstock producers want to produce more from the top tier. “The embryo transplant industry is moving mostly because never in history have we been getting paid so well for high-end genetics.”

SASK HEREFORD ASSOCIATION
REPORT
BY SARAH HORDOS Happy New Year! What a busy fall it has been! We seen some exceptional female production sales across Saskatchewan in October and many Herefords found success along the fall show run since our last issue. The Saskatchewan Hereford Association brought back the Red Coat Raffle fundraiser this year at Canadian Western Agribition with a $5000 Grand Prize Sale Credit to be used at any Hereford sale in Canada in the coming year. 25 Hereford Breeders across the country also generously donated secondary $1000 sale credits to the raffle. Nearly $12,000 worth of tickets were sold, with Chloe Wagner being the Grand Prize winner. The SHA would like to thank all of those who donated sale credits and purchased tickets supporting the raffle. Funds raised will go towards our Scholarship fund and a few new programs the SHA has in the works to be announced in 2024. New this year we hosted the Red Coat Reception at the Atlas Hotel. This supper was for any Hereford association members, exhibitors and their crews that were in town for CWA and wanted to come for low key evening with supper and drinks. The ballroom was full and lots of networking and fun was had by all. We hope to keep this event going annually. We would like to thank our meal and silent auction sponsors that helped us get the event rolling, as well as the Atlas Hotel for being excellent hosts and providing a great meal. At the event we presented retiring board members Stephen Myer, and Logan Martinson with Bernie Brown prints as tokens of appreciation for their years of dedication to the Saskatchewan Hereford Board of Directors.
The Hereford show overall had a strong turnout. Judges Trent and Garrett Liebreich of Radville, SK did an excellent job sorting the cattle. You can find fall show results inside this issue. The week of CWA was capped off with an exciting CN Beef Supreme with many high-quality Hereford cattle qualifying for the event. 1 female and 2 bulls stood Top 10 with Glenlees AXA Evolve 112J being crowned Supreme Champion Bull. Congratulations to the Lees Family, AXA and River Valley on such an exciting accomplishment! The atmosphere in the barn was great all week and the future for the Hereford breed looks brighter than ever! The SHA is looking forward to 2024 and has many new things being discussed in the background to bring forward to our members. The next deadline will be our new scholarship program which will be due this coming spring, details can be found in this issue or reaching out to any SHA Board Member. Bull Sale season is fast approaching, and you can find a full listing of upcoming Hereford sales on our Facebook page. As always stay in the know with the SHA on Facebook and our website, skhereford.com, Until next time,
Sarah Hordos Secretary-Treasurer Saskatchewan Hereford Board
