From The
Gatepost By Bruce Holmquist General Manager, Canadian Simmental Association
How Big is Too Big In October, I had the opportunity to travel to Mexico and judge the 2023 Mexican National Simmental show, and what an honor and experience that was. Over 200 head of the very best Simmentals from across Mexico assembled in Guadalajara to show Mexican beef producers as well as the rest of the world, what Mexican Simmental breeders have to offer. My first opportunity to see Simmental in production in Mexico was in 2005 and it was an eye opener as to what the infusion of Canadian Simmental genetics in the 1980’s had achieved towards the advancement of the Simmental breed. To be honest, it wasn’t something that I was very proud of. Tall and extreme cattle that the judges and show ring in North America had told us was the way to go. Fast forward to 2023 and what a noticeable difference the pressure of genetic selection has made. The cattle that I gave my opinion on over the two-day event were some of the very best Simmentals that I have seen in my travels anywhere in the world. While the show had the usual variances of quality and top end between the various classes, it was clear that the Mexican breeders have focused on structural soundness without worrying about color and extremely low birthweight. That’s not to say that they haven’t focused on calving ease as we all know that birthweight is not always directly correlated to calving ease, nor is overall performance in any way tied to hide color. Make them all green is my mantra, meaning profit and sustainably, and ignore the spots. If we could all somehow do that this cattle business would become an easier industry to produce for. Once the hide is off and they are on the plate, no consumer cares or knows what color they were. Ahead of the final day of judging, I was given somewhat of a challenge by a friend of mine who has judged considerably in Mexico. He said he was especially interested in what I would do with the big bulls. Heading
into this commitment I knew that would be an attention getter for some folks and I also knew it would have to play out in its own way, which it did. When the mature bulls walked into the ring on day 2 it was an awesome display of soundness and phenotype combined with things Simmental cattle are expected to do, and that’s to provide performance, fertility and carcass potential that will work in a defined crossbreeding program, while providing true heterosis in a dissimilar, practical and complementary approach. As I watched and admired the bulls coming into the ring, I flashed back to the days when Simmental bulls came to town that had the muscle and natural power to boost British based cow herds with additional gain and profitability, instead of bringing them all down to having under 90-pound birthweights. That is not what Continental breeds are designed for, especially when packers are wanting larger animals to harvest. The proof is in the US Mid-west and trying to feed cattle to 1600 pounds plus and encountering heart and health issues in feed-yards with excessive heat. It’s a miserable feeling losing an animal a week or less before harvest because they had a heart attack due to obesity, and it’s becoming a much too regular occurrence. As an industry we all need to ask ourselves if we are expecting the cattle from the genetics that we produce to do more than they are capable of genetically. I will be the first to admit that I don’t have it all figured out, but I am very doubtful that 80-pound birthweight bulls can realistically produce 1600-pound steers without high death loss and extra trim on the floor. Maybe it’s time that the Canada and the US seedstock sector, and our customers, ask what the optimum target size is for birthweight with our new targets on increased harvest weight. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a fantastic 2024!

Breed
IMPROVEMENT
By Sean McGrath Breed Improvement Coordinator for the Canadian Simmental Association
Adopting Technology I have been involved in several events over the last few years asking the question, “why are producers (especially beef producers) slow to adopt new technology?” This is applicable to Simmental breeders and perhaps no more than today. The available technologies that can be applied to livestock breeding are numerous and growing and the methods of application ever increasing. The obvious question then becomes, if I can’t do it all, what should I do? The answer to this question is going to be very operation dependent and for each operation, if done properly will also be customer dependent. How do you sell your genetics, to whom and for what purpose really matters in this decision. There may be a couple of easy ones worth considering. If you have a scale and process your cows, it is worth considering collecting/reporting weights and body condition on cows. This is very low cost and fits well into the current development of a mature weight EPD in IGS that is planned for release in the next few months. Mature size matters for things like cow herd maintenance costs and provides some relative indication of maturity. Additionally, there are several traits with a very low cost of collection such as docility, calf vigour and heifer exposure data that relate heavily to the use and strengths of the breed within the nation’s cowherd. If your customers are selling feeder cattle or retaining ownership, information on carcass merit in the seedstock herd can be incredibly valuable. There is some cost to using this technology, since images must be collected by a certified technician and processed in a certified lab, but this investment provides an early indication of relative carcass merit in the herd. The use of a certified technician and laboratory also ensures that the data collected is directly tied to carcass data and that the model used meets ongoing scientific scrutiny regarding its accuracy and repeatability. As well, the certified technicians must also test and recertify, ensuring that their images are collected to a professional standard. The final one on the list is the use of DNA technologies. Any parentage currently being done is conducted using SNP technology, however parentage represents a very small portion of the power of genomic technology. This is an area where it may pay to make an investment in technology, particularly in a seedstock operation. Moving beyond parentage and into a high-density test can provide assurance of parentage, but also provides valuable information on a lot of other traits. This improves the accuracy of decision making, but it also increases the speed of selection, particularly for traits such as longevity. Imagine being able to make informed decisions on potential longevity when a heifer is still a calf, rather than waiting 10 years and having the hindsight that you should have kept her first bull calf in your herd. The application and benefits of DNA technology will differ for each operation. Perhaps parentage testing every calf and using larger cow groups in multi-sire pastures is a paying proposition for your operation. The DNA technology may enable pedigree integrity with an improved grazing program. Perhaps there is opportunity to have higher density DNA available on sale bulls and to work with customers to sire identify offspring on which there is carcass or feeding data. Maybe there is an application or idea you have not even thought about yet.
The key to technology adoption is to have a clear goal in mind for your operation. Most seedstock producers I know want “the best” cattle, but often we don’t consider “the best at what?” Are we shooting for the best growth and yield, the best maternal strengths, the best ability to survive the toughest environments, the best carcass quality, or some other specific goal. Once we have identified some SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound) goals for our operation, it becomes much easier to identify technologies of interest and to determine how they are best applied in our own scenario. The hard part of this process is identifying the goals. We are all approached with new technologies being sold every day. Picking the winners is goal dependent. Short List of Some Technologies to Consider: Online data reporting (Simmental.com) Artificial Insemination/Embryo Transfer/IVF Scale/RFID reader – weight collection, cow weight collection Preg Checking Carcass Ultrasound DNA Parentage 100K Genomic testing EPD Total Herd Reporting
It is important to keep adding to/eliminating from and revising the list. While a lot of cattle breeding is common sense and hands on, there are a lot of places where technology can improve our effectiveness. Keeping up with available technologies and new developments can be difficult and time consuming, and assessing the validity and viability of various technologies can be daunting. The CSA works hard to identify technologies and opportunities that may benefit membership and may even assist in these offerings through programs such as the replacement heifer DNA and ultrasound program. As well, the network of breeders and their customers represented by CSA provides a great collective group that shares new ideas. If you get a chance to get out to the fall shows or feeder sales and take the time to pick peoples brains about what they are doing on their ranches, you may identify some great ideas you can beg, borrow, steal and adapt to your own situation. Technology adoption done well is really about being SMART in helping us reach our goals.

The colour of cattle has changed a bit on the Carson farm in south-western Manitoba over the past 40 years, but it just reflects their commitment to produce quality Simmental cattle that meets the needs of commercial beef producers. It was a single full blood heifer bought for a 4-H project that got the ball rolling back in about 1983. Today the Carsons, owners of Northern Light Simmentals run a herd of about 200 head of purebred red and black females along with a few full bloods in the mix. “When we got started with full blood cattle, we didn’t imagine any other colours,” says Neil Carson, who along with his wife Denise and children Cody and Carly-Jo own and operate what has now become a third generation family farm. “But over the years we’ve switched mainly to red and black cattle. It is important to pay attention to what the market asks for — what your customers want. We do our best to produce cattle that meet the needs of commercial beef producers.” Carson is planning to carry that philosophy to the national level this fall as he joins the board of the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) following his election as a director at the CSA annual general meeting in September.
Carson was born and raised on the family farm owned by his parents Wayne and Joan Carson. In the late 1970s the farm had a few Simmental cattle and produced commercial Shorthorn-cross cattle until things started to change in the early 1980s. “I bought my first purebred Simmental heifer in about 1983 for a 4-H project when I was 10 yearsold,” says Carson. Her name was RAV Miss Steele 58R. She remained as a productive female in their growing herd of Simmental cattle for many years “as Simmental cows are known to do.” Along with their dad’s interest in Simmentals, Carson’s siblings also started showing Simmental calves in 4-H. That all eventually led to the creation of Northern Light Simmentals. Carson also got involved with the Manitoba branch of Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA) in those early years. “I was among a group at that time that helped to re-launch YCSA in Manitoba,” he says. “The provincial group had been active for a while and then sort of slowed down and we got it back up and running.” They organized a number of provincial events, and he attended national meetings including one in New Brunswick. He remained involved with YCSA until
10 DEC SC Insides 23.indd 10

about the age of 18. Later, in his mid-20s he joined the board of the Manitoba Simmental Association serving in a number of capacities over the years including a term as president. He recalls being actively involved with the provincial association as it hosted part of the 2006 World Simmental Congress. Over the past dozen years, Carson has focused on increasing purebred herd numbers and producing quality cattle. “We focus on raising good, easy doing cattle that look after themselves, graze longer and stay in good shape,” he says. “Our cattle are not pampered, as our customers want less maintenance and more profit.” Northern Light Simmentals organizes two sales each year. Later this fall the farm will host the annual bred heifer sale in Rossburn in early December. Each March is the annual bull sale. For both sales, interested buyers are invited to visit the farm prior to the sale to have a look at cattle. The actual sale is held at a venue in Rossburn, with buyers viewing a video of cattle. In 2017, the Carson family and Northern Light Simmentals was honoured by the Manitoba Simmental Association with the A.O. Henuset Memorial Distinguished Service Award for their help in establishing the Simmental industry in Manitoba. Carson says with son Cody joining the farming operation full time it made it possible for him to devote some of his time to serve on the CSA national board. As a new director, joining the CSA Breed Improvement Committee, Carson will offer his knowledge and experience to the discussion. “I haven’t been to a meeting yet, but I am going in with an open mind,” he says. “I am there to learn and to help out as I can.”

ADVICE By Roy Lewis, DVM
Managing Footing For Cattle It is with good reason many audits of feedlots both in Canada and the US look at slip, trips or falls of cattle and recording the percentage especially when loading or processing. This absolutely applies to cow-calf or purebred cattle as well. There are several specific areas to watch in all areas of cattle production where footing can be improved, altered or new methods used to improve animal welfare and decrease injuries. One must also be ever vigilant of slips, trips or falls as traction conditions can vary as a days processing or loading cattle progresses. Sometimes something as simple as sand or de-icer available can prevent serious injuries. We don’t want any more than 2% of cattle falling outside of a chute for instance. We all often only really think about footing when new processing, loading, barn floors facilities are first built. There are no real guidelines to follow. I have seen some inventive cement roughening devices or metal cross struts. In new construction one should closely look at certain floor designs in the popular squeeze chutes. Some designs with very aggressive cross struts I would argue are giving cattle too much to grip against. There is a common thought that the emerging disease toe-tip necrosis may start from the hoof wall pulled away from the underlying sensitive laminae from cattle struggling to get away when too much traction is created. Some chutes even went with rubber coating the cross struts. Ontario’s confinement barns have even gone to rubber coating inserts for the slatted flooring to prevent damage and protect the feet. Lameness’s have been cut down considerably. Next time you are doing anything with your cattle look down and see what type of footing you have. Record any type of incidence and even if something results in lameness can it be improved. Lameness then robs production and many become permanent resulting in premature shipping. Every time we see any type of lameness with handling, loading or transporting there are two things to consider once the diagnosis is made. Should it be treated and these days in consultation with your veterinarian a script if for at least NSAIDs may be given. One should investigate the cause and determine was it just a fluke or was there a facility issue. Footing as the facility issue should always be considered with any lameness. Better chutes (especially hydraulic ones) that quickly restrain an animal don’t allow for a lot of spinning out and damage especially to the bottom of the feet. Walking through the facility much as Dr. Temple Grandin explains you will identify things that scare the cattle and cause them to balk. You should also be cognizant of footing. What is slippery for you is also more slippery for cattle. We all know how poorly they do on ice. I have personally gone into an alley system that was full of ice from inclement weather and chopped cross wise griping spots after it was noted a couple of cattle went down. The rest of the day ran smoothly. One can easily determine where the greatest need for traction is. Once the cloven hoof animals such as cattle loose footing laterally the foot looses the contact
+
surface and doing the splits results. Muscle damage to pelvic damage leads to downer cattle in lots of these circumstances. A costly scenario. I have known producers to build covers over the handling facilities. Yes it costs money but comfort of workers, cattle and being able to blow in heat it and have excellent lighting are the main reasons. But preventing snow and ice and slippage issues for cattle and handlers is another excellent reason to justify the cost. Don’t forget the improvements are permanent. The most common areas where we see issues with footing is with entry into the alley system or exit from the squeeze chute, entry into the loading area or off into the truck. Don’t forget areas around watering bowls, mineral feeders especially in winter where icing up occurs. Anywhere where extra acceleration is exhibited by cattle the friction can eventually make the surfaces very slippery. Cement may need to be regrooved, cross struts repaired or temporarily rubber mats placed. Even with rubber mats my feeling is those grooved crossways to the direction cattle move across them provide much better traction than flat smooth mats. Especially if urinated on or they get excessively wet. If getting mats for trucks or trailers get those with grooves or holes punched in them. We have a unique situation at the cattle show Farmfair International in Edmonton. The halls the cattle are stalled in have a smoother hard surface. They have tried and use rubber mats in some high traffic places but the vast majority of areas we have rolls of roofing material duct taped to the ground. As long as the material is kept relatively dry, so it doesn’t rip it is like the cattle are walking on sandpaper to a degree. The corners are even duck taped in so cattle don’t slip if the owner leading them cuts the corner. This would be an ideal easy fix in a new barn, calving facility or cattle show/display before better permanent footing can be installed. Permanent is the long term answer. If footing from snow and ice is terrible one may need to regroup for a better day or throw down salt as a de-icer or chop ice. All these decisions need to be made on a day by day situation by situation basis. One feels terrible if bad footing causes a snapped leg or ripped cruciate (stifle joint) resulting in emergency slaughter or culling just because poor footing was not addressed in the first place. Next time you go to process, load, move, calve out or treat cattle be cognizant of the surfaces these cattle will encounter and make changes as necessary. Your cattle will be happier for it and way less lameness’s and other injuries will be the result. Clinically examining them may point to the cause either infectious or traumatic and initiate treatment as appropriate. Small changes in footing can lead to great changes in the handling welfare of the cattle and we know culling for lameness is only second to reproduction in our cow calf herds, and second only to respiratory in our weaned cattle so it pays to be preventative in our approach.

Nathan Phinney CCA President It is often hard to quantify the value of our participation at international conferences as the results aren’t always immediate. But having Canada’s experience and leadership in sustainable beef production at the table during these talks is starting to move the needle on the perceptions about environmental impacts of beef production and how a regional approach to these policies needs to be taken.
During the five-day forum, Brodie and Jenna presented at an Investing in Youth in Agri-Food Systems for Accelerated Climate Action side event. The session discussed how we can invest in youth through existing and emerging programs, innovations, and technologies to help reduce barriers of entry to the next generation of farmers and ranchers who will be key to advancing climate action within our global food systems.
If we don’t show up at international discussions to share our sustainability story, our ability to produce, compete and export will suffer. We do not want to see Canadian production getting lumped in with other production systems that are less efficient with very different environmental footprints. The influence of Canadian cattle producers on these international discussions is critical to our industry’s ability to operate and thrive, so it warrants the investments of time and producer dollars. Protectionist countries will be there. Countries that regulate based on politics will be there. Countering those voices needs to be done so those views aren’t alone informing international rules setting, policy guidance, and public sentiment.
Brodie spoke to his experience as a participant in the Canadian CYL program and how the program invested in his growth and success in the Canadian beef industry. He also discussed the importance of recognizing the ecological goods and services provided by cattle farmers and ranchers and how the benefits extend to communities across Canada.
Our industry’s young leaders have been on the move in recent weeks to take part in international policy conversations dealing with the challenges of producing more food for a growing world population while limiting environmental impacts. In late September, the Canadian Cattle Association’s (CCA) Mitchell Zoratti and Daniela Lombardo travelled to Rome to attend the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations’ (FAO) first-ever Global Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation. Remarkably, this is the first time the FAO hosted a conference focused on livestock since it was founded in 1945. As youth delegates, Mitchell and Daniela were selected to participate in the Global Youth Dialogue on Sustainable Livestock Transformation. This dialogue brought together participants from a variety of professional backgrounds and nationalities to discuss opportunities and solutions for empowering youth in the livestock sector. They also identified innovative and actionable solutions for sustainable livestock transformation. The three-day dialogue wrapped up with the development of a Global Youth Statement on Sustainable Livestock Development, where the positive contribution of livestock production to ecosystem services and the environment was acknowledged, while emphasizing the importance of engaging with the next generation throughout the decision-making process. We also saw our youth leadership on the world stage in discussions concerning livestock and food systems at the World Food Forum held in Rome in mid-October. Canada’s delegation included Brodie Haugan (Alberta), a graduate of the Canadian Cattle Young Leaders (CYL) Program, rancher, and Alberta Beef Producers chair, Jenna Sarich from both Public and Stakeholder Engagement at CCA and the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB), and CCA’s Jessica Radau. The goal of the event was to serve as a global platform to bring youth together from diverse backgrounds to discuss the key theme, Agrifood systems transformation accelerates climate action, with a large focus on engaging and supporting youth. Over the course of the forum, the delegation shared the important role the cattle industry plays in Canada’s climate change solution.
Jenna discussed the work undertaken by the CRSB as a case study to highlight Canada’s investment in youth and science-based decision making through the National Beef Sustainability Assessment and Strategy, guided by our industry’s ambitious 2030 goals. She demonstrated tangible actions undertaken in Canada to invest in our next generation of leaders. Both these conferences brought a tremendous opportunity for us to highlight CCA’s work in the area of youth development. We should be very proud of the caliber of our Canadian CYL program and the Canadian Cattle Youth Council. Our young leaders continue to make waves and gain recognition from the international community. Having such a strong Canadian youth voice at these meetings has resulted in meaningful discussions that have led to the acknowledgement of how Canada’s approach to raising beef is part of the climate change solution. Earlier this fall, CCA was pleased to see two Canadian young leaders in the beef industry chosen to represent the North American region on the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL) Youth Advisory Group. GASL is a partnership of livestock sector stakeholders including the public and private sectors, government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), academia, and researchers working towards the sustainable development of the sector. Congratulations goes out to Evan Chaffe (Ontario) and Sydney Fortier (Alberta) on this prestigious appointment. This is big news as Canada fills the spots available for the North American region. Evan and Sydney will serve a two-year term and will provide valuable input on policy matters of relevance to GASL with a youth lens and based on their experience in the Canadian beef industry. It’s clear that world needs more Canadian beef, and we look forward to continuing our leadership in sustainable beef production on the world stage. Our next stop is at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai beginning in late November, where CCA has secured official observer status. With COP28 putting emphasis on food systems and agriculture, CCA will be on the ground to carry the voice of Canadian cattle producers and ensure that our industry is not misrepresented.

PRESS RELEASE
changes to the
DOCILITY EVALUATION SimGenetics
American Simmental Association
There will be upcoming changes to the International Genetic Solutions docility genetic evaluation. Changes were introduced that allowed for the acceptance of docility records that were collected on a different date than when a weight phenotype was recorded. In order to accommodate the inclusion of records, the definition of how docility contemporary group was defined has been modified. The previous method of constructing docility contemporary group used an animal’s weaning weight contemporary group made up of: breeder, herd, weaning management group, weaning pasture code, weaning weight group, weaning sex, and weaning weight date. The new method of establishing docility contemporary group adds docility score date to the weaning weight contemporary group. For animals that had records previously included in the evaluation, the contemporary grouping information will be unchanged. However, with these changes we are able to add about 6% more records to the evaluation. These records were added either as animals with dates that didn’t match or if they only had yearling docility; those records are now being included in the evaluation. Numerous beta evaluations were performed to test this new update to docility, and the correlations between the old method and new method were high (>0.99) with a noticeable improvement to accuracy of prediction to justify this change. Most animals will not see any meaningful change in their EPD, but there will be some instances of sire reranking for docility EPD. Please reach out to the ASA for any questions you may have during this transition.

At the beginning of September, I headed to the Medicine Lodge Fall Round Up before my travels went international again to Pendleton, Oregon, for the Pendleton Round-Up! This year, Miss Rodeo America and I had the privilege of being the first Miss Rodeo America and Miss Rodeo Canada to ride in the Pendleton arena during a performance. That was a oncein-a-lifetime experience. Watching our great rodeo athletes compete on Pendleton’s iconic grass area was incredible. In addition to the rodeo, I watched the Happy Canyon show and did some shopping at the Pendleton Woolen Mills store before making my way back to Canada for this year’s Oldstoberfest. I had so much fun at this Bavarian-themed rodeo and exploring the town of Olds, visiting some of the rodeo sponsors and one of my sponsors, Lammles.
Nearing the end of the month, I had the opportunity to visit C5 Ranch and help them with one of their branding days, as well as made my way to Red Deer for the Peavey Mart trade show and buying event. I had so much fun talking to everyone at the event and getting to know the people behind Peavey Mart better. Lastly, I headed to Alberta’s capital city for the Edmonton Pro Rodeo, which happens to be the last rodeo of this year’s Canadian Professional Rodeo season. During my time in Edmonton, I helped tour some of our American-visiting royalty through West Edmonton Mall, as well as stopped in at CFCW to do some radio recordings before heading to the rodeo. With October near, I am so excited to be packing my bags and heading to Australia before the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Red Deer, where we will be crowning our New Miss Rodeo Canada for 2024. I wish our eight contestants the best of luck this year. Airdrie Pro Rodeo Princess Hannah Braun, Miss Rodeo Edmonton Codi Wilson, Medicine Hat Rodeo Queen Shaylyn Hunt, Miss Ponoka Stampede Kaylee Shantz, Miss Rodeo Stavely Jasmine Dahl, Miss Strathmore Stampede Martina Holtkamp, Miss Rodeo Taber Jessie Ferguson and Miss Rodeo Wainwright Harleigh Zack. R PLUS – MARLIN AND LUCILLE LEBLANC Marlin started R Plus Simmentals with his father, Ross in 1976 and later expanded the company with his wife, Lucille. In 1992 they became one of the original breeders of red and black Simmentals. Their operation went from private bull sales to full scale bull sales in 2000. Since then, they have continued to develop and adopt their breeding programs which has had a positive influence on purebred and commercial herds nationally and internationally and have always prided themselves on being the breed of consistency and confidence. Throughout the early years and more since 2000, R Plus was a leader in the seed stock sector in the usage and promotion of using ultrasound data for the purpose of estimating meat quality and carcass value in their breeding stock. This combined with intense genetic research, EPD profiles, and visual appraisal they were able to develop their herd of 600 cows into balanced animals as well as extremely powerful herd sires with Edge, Yuma, Reddington, 5015, Venom, and Uppercut which are still exemplary to the purebred and commercial industry. Marlin and Lucille’s contributions to the betterment of the beef industry have been recognized nationally and internationally as evidenced through his genetics working in herds throughout Canada and the US. Marlin has contributed greatly to the breed throughout the years. He was a member of the Soo Line Simmental Association, was a consignor to Simmsational in the early days, an original consignor to Checkers, a founding director of the YCSA and Friends of the Canadian Simmental Association, a director with the Saskatchewan Simmental Association, and the Canadian Beef Improvement Council, and Director of the CSA from 2016-2022 where he served as president from 2020 – 2022. He continues to serve as the Co-Vice Chair of the Canadian Beef Breeds Council and Canadian Beef Improvement Network as the Simmental representative. Through his passion for the business, Marlin has developed many relationships with breeders in the beef industry and is recognized by many as one of the best. This is evidenced by his many invitations to judge shows across all breeds and areas, but most notably the RBC Supreme at Agribition and the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. Marlin has contributary dearly to this industry. He has done this quietly, never asking for recognition and always wanted to leave his business and industry in a better way. He is beyond grateful and honored to have him and Lucille inducted to the hall of fame.

Ron was raised on a dairy farm outside of Drayton, Ontario not far from where he later settled when married. As the second born child of seven kids, he quickly became the leader of the crew. He always enjoyed working with the cattle and growing the herd and his show string even as a teenager. As the dairy industry evolved Ron’s family took a turn from the traditional Holstein herd and worked to grow a Brown Swiss herd to fit a niche market. Ron graduated from Norwell Secondary School in Palmerston, Ontario and he then worked through a number of jobs in the city from working at the Royal Bank to the accounting department at Firestone. After he and Mary Ellen married in 1973, they settled in Wellington County. Ron’s love of owning cattle grew as he dabbled in the beef industry while working at the local Coop. On a work trip in France around 1983 Ron saw a display of Simmental which forever changed the direction of his breeding goals. It took a few years for his research to be complete. In the early 90s, Ron began adding Fullblood Simmental genetics into his cow calf operation and never looked back. Ron promoted EPD’s and ultrasound data as valuable selection tools and core to breeding decisions. He organized the Marwood Production sale for the Marywood Breeders Group marketing performance bulls and breeding females in November each year. He showed Simmentals at local fairs in Ontario and at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. Multiple years Marywood Simmentals won Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor awards at the Royal, as well as breeding multiple class winner banners and grand and reserve champion animal awards.
