CANADIAN GALLOWAY ADVANCE 6

Hello fellow Galloway enthusiasts. I’m pleased to be addressing you once again as your President. I hope this finds you and your herds in good health. The past year has been a positive one to be in the cattle industry despite mother natures challenges.

In 2023 we saw an increase in social activities amongst our membership both local and foreign. There was multiple Canadians that attended the Royal Highland Show in the spring as well as the World Congress in Bern, Switzerland. Here at home, we had a large gathering at the rejuvenated Alberta Galloway Associations field day hosted in September by Robertson West Livestock. It consisted of a cattle tour/displays, guest speakers

with presentations and dinner. There was also a great display put together and manned, throughout by the ECGA at the Toronto Royal Winter Fair in November. The Horvey family also attended the Canadian Bull Congress exhibiting some animals and had the AGA display set up.

This past year we saw numerous members once again showcase the breeds across Canada. Suncrest Farms, 2Bridges Galloways, Dedmandale Galloways, Glenfiddich Galloways, SHAK Galloways, Robertson West Livestock, Ayla & Peta Kendall-Price and Big Deal Galloways in their respective regions. There were also many Juniors through out the country who exhibited in 4-H or local junior shows. We also saw Glenfiddich make the trek south of the boarder once again to the Denver International. All who exhibited did an outstanding job promoting and representing the Galloway breeds.

In conclusion, Galloway breeders have done a good job of addressing the need for increased promotion in the last year. Let’s keep it going with this years coming events like the AGM planned to take place in August in Ontario, the 2024 AGA field day in September and The National Galloway show to tentatively take place at Farm Fair International in November.

Cheers,

Brian Robertson

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE INTRODUCING CHELSEA ALLAN, DIRECTOR

My husband Arjan, and I purchased our farm just outside of Ottawa in the fall of 2020. We started with just 2 registered Belted Galloway heifers and this spring we will calve in 14 registered animals. We chose Belted Galloways for their hardiness and their ability to produce excellent beef on grass alone. We love working with the cattle and utilizing them to help improve our farm’s ecosystem as well as to provide healthy food for our community. Interesting fact; after choosing Belted Galloways as the breed on our farm we found out that the original family who lived on this farm over 60 years ago also had a herd of Belted Galloways.

FROM OUR

Hi! My name is Ayla Kendall-Price, my family and I own and operate Pearly Watt Farm, where we raise our small herd of registered Belted Galloway cattle in Tomahawk, Alberta. We strive to raise high quality cattle that work in both the show ring and out on pasture. With the use of imported genetics from Europe and the United States, we are seeing the quality of our herd grow immensely. We show our Belties throughout the year at junior shows, jackpots, and fall majors like Farmfair International. Our most recent success in the show ring was at Farmfair International when we brought home Grand Champion heifer calf, yearling heifer, cow/calf pair, and overall Grand Champion female in the Galloway Show! Our cow/calf pair then went on to be the overall Reserve Grand Champion AOB female and a Supreme Show qualifier! We have a select few calves available for purchase every fall from a variety of outstanding dams and sires. So be sure to check out our Facebook page and Instagram for updates on our herd and opportunities to get your hands on our genetics!

WORLD GALLOWAY CONGRESS 2023

After visiting Germany and catching up with some old friends such as Dr. Heinz Mastall of Westforest Galloways, Horst Kraft and Johannes Bock of Bechtelsberg Galloways and Udo Wipfler of Unser Galloways all in the Alsfeld area, we headed south to Obernheim in Swabia where we visited the Junker family. All families mentioned had imported Canadian cattle, semen, or embryos in the past, so it is interesting to see how those cattle have performed over the years. We then headed off to Bern, about a 3-hour drive, crossing the border where we showed our passports (Switzerland is not part of the European Union), and paid our 45 Swiss franc road tax for the week that we would be in the country and then followed the upper Rhine for a good part of the drive. Upon arriving in Bern, we found the Hotel National, an old hotel, with an interesting 2-person elevator sensitive to the weight limits of people and luggage. We were somehow upgraded to a 2-room suite on the fifth floor. Of course, the elevator only went to the fourth floor, so it was shanks mare from then on. Many of the rooms had space for the bed and not much else, typical of many of the old European hotels. When the meet and greet hosted by Bern Welcome, Res Burkhart, Swiss Galloway President and Berchtold Von Fischer, committee chair and his committee which commenced later in the day, we were given information of the week’s events and free passes for the excellent street care and bus system which was available sometimes in front of the hotel door. There were many indoor and outdoor restaurants within easy walking distance and the hotel supplied a good breakfast each morning. There were 2 tour busses, one German only and the other was English/German.

Day 1, we visited a Dun Galloway herd and a belted herd which also had bison and pigs raised outdoors. These farms and many of the rest that we visited had their own butcher shops and sold their product at astronomical prices. Day 2, we wound our way into the mountains to a new power dam that is replacing an older one that is past its shelf life. The view from over 3000 meters must be beautiful but of all the days to rain and cloud in, this was the one. Later that day, we went down to the valley to a black Galloway herd, were treated to raclette, a tasty local dish and then viewed the specialized hay equipment used for cutting and harvesting the hay on the mountains.

The World Galloway Congress was held in Bern, Switzerland in September, a beautiful country with many varied attractions including scenery and history.

On day 3, we visited Helene Keller who had just brought her Belties from the mountains, still with bells on their necks (does anyone have a bottle of aspirin?). Helene also produces wine and has refurbished an ancient church in the village. An alphorn was playing in the distance. As with most visits, the hosts provided us with local foods. Later we visited the Belties of the Hermann family. Day 4 was chocolate day at Maison Cailler and cheese day in the town of Gruyere, a beautiful old village. Day 5 was a UNESCO walking tour of Bern and then our meeting with reports from around the world and for the first time, participants from Romania and Kyrgyzstan, very interesting people. Day 6 was scientific day at the University with reports on New Genetic Markers in Galloways, Swiss Galloway breeding and how Galloways are compared in the Swiss Herd Book to other breeds in the country. The use of manure to produce biogas and to improve soil humus, a ZOOM presentation from the University of Guelph on efforts to control methane produced by livestock and finally a presentation on predator control in Europe mainly pertaining to wolves, a very interesting day.

Topics of interest to Canadians were the massive farm subsidies, many tied to making the land look good for tourism and the prices of meat products in the farm shops. It was a very good program done by the WGC committee. Some reports may be viewed on the internet at www.gallowayworld.net

The next WGC is March 27 to April 2, 2025 in Invercargill and Queenstown, New Zealand. Contact – mcnaughton@xtra.co.nz for more information.

VETERINARY PERSPECTIVE

A BREEDER’S.... VETERINARY

Tips For Improving Breeding Success In Beef Cows

A full 6 weeks following calving is required for the uterus to recover and prepare for the next pregnancy. Although many dairy cows will resume normal estrous cycles before uterine repair is complete beef cows are more likely to require 30, 40 or even more days before they display a normal standing heat. If 12-month calving intervals are to be maintained beef cows should be able to display estrus by the onset of the next breeding season. Since gestation is usually slightly longer than 9 months e.g., 283 days, a good rule of thumb is that they should be showing “good heats” by 80 to 85 post-calving.

Follicular development ceases during early to midpregnancy and when it resumes after calving the very first ovulation occurs without any signs of estrus. This is called a silent heat. Following ovulation, a corpus luteum (CL) is formed on the ovary. Although usually short-lived and considered sub-functional compared to those formed during subsequent cycles progesterone produced by this CL is crucial as it plays a significant role in reestablishing normal estrous cycles and strong estrous behaviour in cows. The time between the first ovulation and the next can be normal at roughly 3 weeks, but often the interval is shortened. Although most often considered the hormone of pregnancy progesterone regulates the release of several other hormones and is critical to initiating normal estrous cycles having direct effects on follicular development and ovulation. Conception rates following AI are higher

in cows that display estrus at the time of insemination. Cows exposed to higher levels of progesterone during the cycle prior to estrus display stronger heats and typically have larger follicles producing more estrogen. Estrogen, in turn, helps to prepare the uterus for pregnancy therefore, higher levels of estrogen associated with larger follicles and strong heats also play a role in ensuring that the conceptus is recognized by the uterus and that a successful pregnancy will occur. The chances of establishing pregnancy by breeding at the first real, not silent, estrus following calving are lower than breedings at subsequent heats. Timely establishment of normal estrous cycles following calving is often overlooked as one of the most important factors limiting reproductive efficiency in beef cow-calf herds.

Suckling naturally suppresses cyclicity in cows independent of milk production. The physical interaction with the calf causes the release of a specific class of chemicals called endogenous opioids that not only benefit the mother and calf, but also have a direct limiting effect on follicle development and ovulation. Lactating dairy cows have much higher milk production but rarely suckle calves therefore they do not experience the same effect. The more suckling events a cow experiences in a day the greater the release of opioids and subsequently the longer it will take for cyclicity to return. Underfeeding of protein and energy to cows both pre- and post-calving adds to

DR. COLIN PALMER

Dr. Colin Palmer is an Associate Professor of Theriogenology (Animal Reproduction) at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Originally from Nova Scotia, Dr. Palmer worked in mixed practices in Ontario and British Columbia and has owned/operated a practice in Saskatchewan. Dr. Palmer along with his wife Kim and children Lauren, Emily and Carter run a herd of purebred Red Angus cattle under the KC Cattle Co. name.

the suckling-related suppression of cyclicity delaying the first post-calving estrus by several weeks. Cows feeding twins are at a significant disadvantage because of the intensity of the suckling pressure combined with the inability to consume enough high-quality feed to maintain condition. An early method of advancing cyclicity in the face of lactational anestrus employed a procedure called temporary calf removal. Essentially, taking approximately 60 -day old calves away from their mothers for 48 hours is enough to over come the negative effect of suckling and allow ovulation to occur, however, cows and calves must be sufficiently separated to protect the dams from both the sight and sound of the calves. The practical limitations of temporary calf removal obviously limit its usage.

Feeding beef cows well after calving is the best way to optimize timely conception during the breeding season. Cows that must walk as much a 3 kms a day for feed can have 30% higher energy requirements. During cold weather energy required to keep cows and calves’ warm increases substantially. Young cows that are still growing have greater nutritional demand than older cows. Learning how to assess body condition score and to manage body condition through the phases of the beef-cow production cycle is an important skill for the beef producer.

Progesterone-containing devices like CIDRs and PRIDs can be very useful for advancing the onset of estrous

cycles, managing lactational estrus and improving conception rates. I always advise that producers wait until uterine repair (Involution) has occurred because attempts to establish pregnancy too soon after calving may result in untimely pregnancy loss. I usually recommend waiting 50 days. Putting a CIDR in place 50 days or more post calving for 7 days will expose the cow to enough progesterone to advance the onset of normal estrous cycles. The use of Fixedtime AI protocols employing progesterone-containing devices are very good ways to increase the proportion of cows bred early in the breeding season even though not all animals will successfully become pregnant to that AI. For those cows, the exposure to progesterone from the CIDR will have a beneficial carryover effect for the next estrus. During the very early part of the breeding season the odds of establishing a pregnancy by breeding at an observed heat following the use of a CIDR are higher than when simply watching for heats and breeding.

Good nutrition combined with progesteronecontaining devices or progesterone-like feed additives (melengestrol acetate – MGA) can be invaluable for optimizing reproductive performance in your herd. Not just your front pasture cows! Ask your veterinarian about available products and protocols.

WENTWORTH 4-H BEEF CLUB

Hi, my name is Sam. I am ten years old and in grade 5. I go to Rockton Elementary School in Hamilton, Ontario. I also play Rep Basketball. I live on a farm in Westover. We moved to our farm in Westover in 2022. It’s a 56 acre farm and we have 13 Galloway cows for breeding.

SAMUEL ADAMS Millgrove, ON

My cow Kiki, that I showed for my first year of 4-H, is due to have a calf between February and March 2024. I can’t wait to see if it is a bull, or a heifer. If it’s a heifer, I will show it when it is a yearling.

My cow Kiki, that I showed for 4-H, is from the Glenfeddich Galloways herd. I showed at two fairs this year.

First, I showed at Rockton Fair, and I got 3rd in Conformation. I also showed at the Erin Fair and I won Grand Champion Galloway in the Galloway Show.

I had so much fun in my first year of 4-H and I can’t wait to show a Galloway in 4-H again next year.

Thank you for 50 dollars.

Sincerely,

ELIZABETH LEBLANC

Hello, my name is Elizabeth LeBlanc. I’ve been a part of 4-H for 12 years I have completed over 100 clubs. This past show season I had the opportunity to connect with Glenfiddich Galloways. They gave me the opportunity to show my first Galloway yearling heifer. Her name is Kin, her and I bonded fast she had a great temperament and made an amazing show heifer. We had the opportunity to take her to a couple different fairs and also to The Royal Winter Fair. I am very happy that I had the opportunity to learn more about Galloways and how spectacular they are! Thank you to Glenfiddich Galloways I cannot wait till the 2024 show season.

I have had another amazing year showing my Belted Galloway and Appendix Galloway steers in BC. With my Belted Galloway market steer sired by Northfield Donald, we saw the champion drive at the Cariboo Classic Junior Steer and Heifer Show and the Williams Lake and District 4-H Show and Sale, earning second and first respectively in our weight classes. At the Williams Lake and District 4-H Show and Sale, we also earned Grand Champion Galloway Steer, Best Groomed Calf, Reserve Champion Senior Showman, and competed in the Homegrown Steer Championship. With my Appendix Galloway steer calf sired by Westview Bud Lightening, we won Grand Champion Young Calf at the Williams Lake and District 4-H Show and Sale as well as Reserve Champion Young Calf at the BC AgExpo. I am every day amazed by the performance and show success of the Galloway animals that I show. I am very proud to show Galloway and Galloway influence animals and be an ambassador for the breed in western Canada.

Galloway Cattle Society of

GB & IRELAND 2024 REPORT

The year 2023 began on an extraordinary note for the UK Galloway Cattle Society, marked by the establishment of a new world record price for Blackcraig Dyker. Achieving a staggering 26,000gns, this impressive feat shattered the longstanding record of 22,000gns, which had endured for an impressive 34 years. Congratulations were extended to the Finlay Family, who now proudly hold both the male and female records. Blackcraig Dyker found a new home with new members Glenrath Farms, Langhaugh, Kirkton Manor, Peebles, a welcome addition to their 29-head herd.

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) in May marked significant changes in the leadership of the organization. Mr. Peter Hunter Blair of Nether Cleugh assumed the role of Chairman, bringing with him a wealth of experience. Mr. Robert McTurk, hailing from Barlaes, took up the position of Vice Chairman, while Mrs. Carolyn Logan (Romesbeoch) was appointed Junior Vice Chairperson. Additionally, Mr. Andrew McConchie (Penninghame) accepted the position of Vice President, this recognised the outstanding work and unwavering commitment demonstrated by Andrew throughout his association with the Society.

In a significant development, the Society announced the establishment of the Irish regional club, Mr John Smyth, (Upper Buckna) was appointed Chairman and has propelled the club and it’s members to have representation at many local shows. Additionally, the club’s engagement with the Irish government through attending meetings and communicating with relevant authorities demonstrates a proactive approach to having a voice in policy discussions and decision-making processes.

The Galloway beef project is ongoing, once again there was a December kill of 160 of pure Galloways and crosses. Unfortunately, the Galloway beef wasn’t branded in Aldi’s stores (4th largest supermarket) for their Christmas range as the contract for beef processing was awarded to another company, just before the kill. There has been a steady stream of new members and we are fortunate that over the last year the number of registrations have also increased, as the British Beef industry is facing challenging times. One newly published research on food security has found almost 14,500 hectares of the country’s best agricultural land has been permanently lost to development over the past 12 years. Also,

the total number of cattle and calves in England has decreased by 0.7% between 2021 and 2022 and now stands at 5.1 million animals. The beef breeding herd has decreased slightly, falling by 1.3% to 1.7 million animals in 2022 but continues to account for just over a third of the overall total number of cattle in England. Another threat is tree planting for carbon offsetting, with many hill farms being sold for forestry, at prices around £8000 per acre.

The weather in the United Kingdom has taken center stage in 2023, breaking records and presenting a myriad of challenges for farmers. The year has been marked by extreme temperatures, unprecedented rainfall, and a series of named storms, making it another eventful chapter in the UK’s meteorological history.

Temperature records were shattered, contributing to 2022 being confirmed as the warmest year on record. June 2023 claimed the title of the hottest month ever recorded in Great Britain. These soaring temperatures brought both benefits and challenges for farmers, impacting crop growth patterns and livestock management.

The UK witnessed a flurry of named storms, each leaving its mark on the landscape. Red warnings were issued, signaling severe weather conditions that posed significant risks to communities and agriculture. These storms brought about disruptions, from transportation to power outages, further complicating the already challenging farming conditions.

Recognizing the importance of youth and new members, the Society has organized successful events to engage with this demographic. An open afternoon and a cattle dressing workshop proved to be popular initiatives, emphasizing the Society’s commitment to growth and vibrancy.

Please keep up to date with all the new on our Facebook and web pages, as always, we would be delighted to welcome and help plan your trip to Great Britain.

Galloway Association of Germany

SUCCESSFUL GALLOWAY OPEN IN ALSFELD

Dear Galloway friends,

In September 2023, one of the world’s largest Galloway shows took place in Alsfeld (Hesse/Germany), with a line-up of over 100 purebred animals of various colours, this event was one of the annual highlights for German Galloway breeders and all international visitors.

The repor t was written by Christian and Niklas Sölzer. The pictures were taken by show photographer Heinrich Schulte.

Every two years, the Hessian breeders of Galloway cattle organise the Galloway Open event in Alsfeld. Over 120 Galloways from across Germany were presented at this year's 13th edition. Breeders and guests enjoyed a splendid cake buffet before the washing and styling of the animals. In the evening, the highly attended breeders’ event was held at the show ring. Prior to the commencement of the evening menu, the 1st chairman, Manfred Möller, cordially welcomed guests from Germany and abroad, as well as the breeders.

The highlight of the event was a charitable auction which followed the slogan “Items that the world does not require, but that every Galloway breeder should possess” . Auctioneer Christian Sölzer oversaw the sale of useful, intriguing, and artistically significant items. Following a lively bidding process, a substantial sum of money was raised.

On Saturday, the judging of the individual show classes commenced. Judge Merlin Bradley from Australia encountered a formidable challenge, as the quality in the individual classes was extremely high. Karl-Ludwig von Hollen fulfilled the role of translator in the arena and conveyed the judging decisions successfully.

The event kicked off with the young cattle showcase. Breeding team Sölzer and Schmidt from Gudensberg achieved success by selecting two A.I. animals, namely “Wolke v. Weinberg” and “Wiolett v. Weinberg” , for the winner’s selection. Kraft GbR from Ottrau also obtained victory with their A.I. cattle “ Yacky v. Bechtelsberg” and “Harmony v. Bechtelsberg” . Reserve champion was the chic and very correct “Oasis” daughter “Wiolett v. Weinberg” , bred by Breeding team Sölzer and Schmidt from Gudensberg. The young cattle category winner was the characterful “Barcelona” bred by S. Schubert from Bavaria.

There was a Hessian double success among the older heifers. The top developed and harmonious “Amadeus of Over Barskoech” daughter “Cappuccino v. Lengelbach” bred by D. Bergmoser, Frankenau, was the champion heifer. The reserve champion title was awarded to “Ivy v. Gladbachtal” from K. Wagner, Breidenbach. Afterwards, four age classes of cow with calf were ranked for the single-coloured Galloways. The classes were dominated by cows

from breeding team Kraft/Bock, Ottrau. They produced three class winners with “Yelina v. Bechtelsberg”, “Yohanna v. Bechtelsberg” and “Ypsilon v. Bechtelsberg”. B. Schlichterle, Ernsthausen, placed the fourth Hessian A.I. with “Yule v. Bechtelsberg”.

In the subsequent selection of winners, the 9-year-old “El Toro” daughter “Ypsilon” with a good bull calf was crowned champion. The typeful first-calving cow “Yelina” with a cow calf was named reserve champion. Both cows were bred by Kraft/Bock, Ottrau. The bull classes had reduced somewhat due to some cancellations. The Kraft/Bock breeding team was also very successful here. Among the old bulls, the “Sid” son “Saam v. Bechtelsberg” was the winning bull. A very large, elongated bull with good feet and legs. A real eye-catcher. The reserve victory went to “Dominator v.Rauberhof” bred Ederle GbR.

The winner for the young bulls also went to Kraft GbR, Ottrau. The winner was the still very young “Vagrant” son “Van Gogh v. Bechtelsberg”. The reserve victory went to the typeful young bull “Kamelot v. Kronenhof” bred by C. Haase, Dinklage.

Following the individual competitions, five farms presented a collection of at least three animals. These were the farms C. Huhn, Allendorf, N. Noll, Wetter, Kraft GbR, Ottrau, Möller GbR, Weimar and B. Sälzer, Wolfhagen. The winner of the farm collection was the three top cows with calves at foot bred by Kraft GbR, Ottrau.

The young breeders also made an appearance. Cathleen Michel and Tine Strübel were the judges. 18 young breeders were judged in five age groups.

In the youngest age group, Magdalena Bock, Ottrau, aged just 7, showed the best performance and was awarded the Ia prize. In the second age group, the A.I. prize went to Lennox Boss, Weilrod, 8 years old. The 9-year-old Lias Itzenhäuser, Ottrau, received the A.I. prize in the third age category. In the older young breeders’ category, things got exciting once again. Anna-Maria Würtz, Eichelsachen, was the winner with the best presentation performance, just ahead of Sebastian Mieder, who was reserve winner.

After the competitions, there was the eagerly awaited raffle. In addition to valuable non-cash prizes, the main prize was the young heifer “Buffy v. Gladbachtal” bred by K. Wagner, Breidenbach. The lucky winner was a newcomer in the Galloway breed.

After these two great days in Alsfeld, the breeders travelled home with their beautiful Galloways. Finally, a big thank you to all those who made such a show possible, both in front of and behind the scenes.

JUNE 2023

SCOTLAND REPORT

June of 2023 was one that will not soon be forgotten. We still talk about it alot, actually.

My brother was asked to judge the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh, Scotland. It’s pretty hard to say no to an offer like that, an honour actually, to judge Galloways in their homeland, in our ancestral land. I was a shoe in for the trip as I love Scotland! It wasn’t hard to convince other family members that this was the trip of a lifetime.

John and I flew over on the 15th of June, landed, grabbed our rental car and headed to Cairnryan on the Ayrshire coast for the ferry to Ireland. Our first stop was to find Balig... a family farm, long sold but still a part of our history. I had been there in 1989, so kind of knew where to look. She sits on the coast overlooking Ayr and the sea. Once a beautiful farm... now a little worn. Still pride in the fact that the Mcllwraith name was attached to it. We arrived in Larne, North Ireland and drove to the home of Joe and Mary Smyth at Upper Buckna, Ballymena, Co. Antrim. From a past experience, I knew that we were going to be blessed with delicious food, lively conversations, beautiful scenery and many Galloway cattle. This was John’s first trip to Ireland.

Joe took us to Ballymena Show for the cattle shows. A small Galloway show, with some quality cattle.

Side note: I am always proud of my Dad and brother and the bloodlines they have produced over the years. With that being said... Joe has a bull, King Kong (unfortunately, hurt at the time and on rest) from an embryo of Diamond B Pixy and Glenfiddich Brodie. Hopefully, he recovered and can be used this spring.

After 2 nights at Upper Buckna, we caught the ferry back to Scotland. We did some snooping around when we got off the ferry... thankfully information from our cousin, Elaine, helped us find what used to be Eggerness. This too was a family farm... I believe, Grandpa’s grandmother lived there, and he would go during the summers to help. Before he passed, he told me that this is where they raised the Galloway cattle. It, too, stands high on the coast overlooking the forth.

Walking around, imagining what it was like in its day... if only the walls could talk.

The car we rented got some good mileage on it over the next couple of days... we drove up to Edinburgh and picked up the Blegens from Roundup, Montana. Harley and Michelle spent the next couple of days with us touring the countryside and visiting friends and Galloway herds at Blackcraig and Nether Cleugh. We made our way down to the Isle of Whithorn to see Stannock, where our grandfather was raised. No longer family-owned, it too has lost its lustre.

From the Isle we travelled through conservation lands (Galloways grazing the grasses) to West Lothian. I had rented a beautiful home for all of us to gather the evening prior to the Highland Show and the night after. Mom and Dad (John and Lee) and our sister Julie, arrived soon after us and then Stuart (my son) and his wife, Allison and her sister, Jodie. We were all gathered to support John. It was amazing... great food, a few drinks and conversation about what we had all seen over the last few days, what we would wanted to do and see going forward.

Show day was a beautiful summer day... We caught up with family and friends. The Highland Show is a spectacle in itself... horse shows, cattle shows, sheep shearing, and farm equipment galore. The Galloway show did not bring the numbers as in past years. When we asked people why they weren’t showing they would reply... too expensive, too many days away from the farm or that they don’t have cattle that John would like (is it good that people know what my brothers type is or bad). The cattle that were judged, were good cattle and following in our grandfather’s footsteps, John judged the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh, Scotland!

The following day, we all said our goodbyes. Julie, John and I started our 50th birthday’s trip ... the North Coast 500. We didn’t see any more cattle, just distilleries, castles, scenery and coastlines... a trip not soon forgotten!
