WHAT’S HAPPENING

MANITOBA’S COMMERCIAL SIMMENTAL PRODUCERS FOR 2023 After about 30 years of working with Simmental cattle in their commercial cow-calf operation, Lyndon and Laurelly Beswitherick say the breed, used in a cross breeding program, continues to produce the quality steers and heifers their customers are looking for. The Beswithericks who own and operate the B2 Cattle Company near Austin, about half way between Brandon and Winnipeg, Manitoba say earlier in their farming career they were involved with other breeds, but soon transitioned to produce Simmental/Angus-cross cattle, which continues to serve them well. Their involvement with the Simmental breed and commitment to producing quality cattle earned them recognition as Manitoba Simmental Association Commercial Breeder of the Year for 2023. “Simmental cattle just seem to have the whole package,” says Lyndon who along with Laurelly and their daughter Shaelyn and her husband Mitchell Toews today run a herd of about 350 head of Simmental/Angus-cross cows under the B2 Cattle Company farm name. “The Simmental have good mothering ability, good milk production and overall good performance.,” he adds. “The breed has done an excellent job over the years of producing the size of cattle that perform well under Western Canada growing conditions.” “And I’m not exactly sure what we did to earn this recognition,” says Laurelly, who for many years served as secretary-treasurer for the Manitoba Simmental Association. “During our farming career we have had the opportunity to meet with and buy cattle from many Simmental breeders in Manitoba. Those relationships have all contributed to the success of our farming operation.” Lyndon Beswitherick is the fourth generation on the family farm which has been involved in different livestock enterprises over the years. His grandfather raised purebred Hereford cattle at one time. And when Lyndon was growing up the farm was actually a dairy operation started by his father. There were also some commercial beef cattle around as well. When Lyndon and Laurelly married and joined the farming operation in 1996 they continued with the dairy operation for several more years. Then along came 2003 and a year of change.

continued from cover “A lot happened in 2003,” says Laurelly. “We bought the farm from Lyndon’s parents, sold the quota and switched to straight beef production, we bought a neighbouring farm to expand our land base, we had increased the size of our cow herd and also increased the amount of cropped acres. And then BSE hit, and that just about stopped everything.” “We were running a commercial cow herd, backgrounding our calves and also custom feeding cattle as well,” says Lyndon. “With BSE the custom feeding came to an end and we had to look at other marketing options for our beef.” Hoping the market disruption due to BSE might be short lived, they decided to increase their acres of annually cropped grain, oilseeds and pulse crops. One new marketing plan involved direct farm sales of beef to consumers. They opened a small beef retail shop on the farm, and with many other farms planning to sell beef to customers in rural communities, the Beswithericks decided to market beef in Winnipeg. “We had a relative working in downtown Winnipeg and they spread the word about our beef being available among their co-workers and it grew from there,” says Laurelly. “Marketing was by word of mouth and we also attended some farmers markets as well.”

do keep a close eye on the herd to make sure all is going well, but seldom have to provide any calving assistance. “We have a small building near the calving area that can be used as a home base and I usually do the night checks,” says Laurelly. “Then as morning comes I go home and get a few hours of sleep, and then work on the farm books and paperwork, while everyone else carries on with the daytime chores.”

Closer to home, the Beswithericks also opened a retail shop in Austin. “I don’t know if direct marketing was a money maker, but at least it helped with cash flow,” says Laurelly. The family operated the retail outlet from 2003 to 2014, initially selling just beef but in later years also carried other Manitoba grown and made products.

As calves are born, the plan is to move small groups of cow-calf pairs with calves of about the same age onto fresh areas of pasture to reduce the risk of disease development and spread.

But eventually they got out of the retail and direct marketing business as family life got busy and the beef industry began to stabilize into a post-BSE era. The Beswitherick farm had run a small herd of commercial beef cattle for a number of years, even back in the dairy farm days. The first herd Lyndon bought was Charolais influenced. He later introduced Simmental to farm, first buying a Simmental bull followed by some cows and heifers. Initially they tried a Simmental/Hereford cross which produced a decent calf but didn’t quite have the performance and color that Lyndon (and the market) was after. He soon began crossing the Simmental with Red and Black Angus genetics, and the herd transitioned to a Simmental/Angus-cross beef program. Today they run a 350 head cowherd, most are for commercial beef production but there are a few purebred cattle as well. In a separate venture, daughters Shaelyn and Megan have established Lil’ Chicks Cattle Co. producing purebred Simmental cattle. The purebred operation is expected to increase numbers in coming years. Along with cattle, the farm also has about 1,500 acres of annual crops, producing wheat, canola, oats, corn, soybeans and occasionally peas. For the commercial cattle, calving season begins around the first of April at a second farm location about a mile from where Lyndon and Laurelly live. “It is a well established herd and we pay particular attention to select bulls that will produce calves in the 90 pound birth weight range,” says Lyndon. Cattle are out on pasture and cropland for winter feeding and then as individual animals get close to calving they are brought in closer to the yard. The Beswithericks

With all calves on the ground, the herd is ready to move out to summer pasture by the first of June. Most pasture is within four miles of the home place, although there is one area where some cattle have to be hauled about an hour and a half to grass. They use Full Blood as well as Red and Black Simmental bulls in their breeding program. “And we also use AI on some of our top cows and heifers to further increase the quality of the herd,” says Laurelly. Heifers are exposed to bulls for 45 days, while it’s 70 days for the cows. The herd will spend about five and a half months in a rotational grazing system of mostly native grass pasture before being brought home by about mid October. Calves are weaned at that time and usually go into a backgrounding feeding program, while the cowherd heads back out to grazing. “All of our cropland and hayfields are fenced, and there is usually plenty of regrowth, so the herd has plenty of feed for fall grazing,” says Lyndon. Part of the fall grazing includes corn stovers — after the grain corn is harvested, the cows clean up the corn stalks and leaves. While much depends on growing season rainfall as well as snowfall, the cowherd can usually graze at home until early December when winter feeding begins. They are fed out on pasture with a mixed ration that includes corn silage, hay and grain. That feeding program carries them through until spring with calving beginning in April. Meanwhile, after weaning the heifers and steers most years are being fed a backgrounding ration. Weaning weights will vary depending on growing season moisture, which affects grass and milk production. With a dry growing season (only four inches of rain all summer) weights were down a bit for 2023, but most years are in the 625 to 650 pound range, and that’s without any creep feeding — all credited to milk, grass and good genetics. The Beswithericks will begin marketing steers in January, with most sold to finishing feedlots by March. From the females they select heifers that will become replacements in their own herd, and over the years they’ve also developed a strong market for heifers sought by other beef producers. “We are proud of the quality of our cattle,” says Laurelly. “We have repeat customers who every year are coming to our yard to buy heifers and it is a similar story with the steers. Our calves are on the Pfizer Gold Program, and there are certain buyers always waiting for our steers to come through the sales ring because they know we have consistent quality and excellent herd health.” The Beswithericks aren’t planning any major changes but the farm is continuing to grow. They bought another neighbouring farm this year, which was an excellent opportunity as that land connected to their existing land base.

The Beswithericks were recognized as the Manitoba Simmental Association Commercial Breeder of the Year for 2023.

8

“ It provides us with more pastureland, which isn’t always easy to come by,” says Laurelly. “And with more pasture we will be able to expand the cow herd as needed. Not every opportunity is the right one, but this was the right opportunity. “

From The

Gatepost By Bruce Holmquist General Manager, Canadian Simmental Association

2024 BULL SALE SEASON The reset button has again been set and we are in a new year full of both promise and expectations. While last year was a good one for many producers, the weather across Canada was once again highly variable and the long-range weather forecasters that we heard at the February beef industry conferences couldn’t have been more wrong in their predictions. In fact, they have turned even me into a “I will believe it when I see it” kind of guy. December 2023 was warm with below normal snow fall in many parts of Western Canada, and for many of us that was much appreciated as it lessened the feed bill as well as made it easier on the straw and bedding supply. Calves are now being born in many herds and warmer weather through the next couple of months, though contrary to the climate change alarmists, won’t anger many cattle producers. Snow at some point will be needed for spring runoff. Calving is always an exciting time of the year as the waiting game is over to see if the previous year’s mating decisions worked out. Yes, there is a long way to go in the development of that calf, but each trip to the barn is one of discovery as the new calves arrive. For most of our commercial customers who aren’t calving yet, it is a time of maintaining the herd and assessing all the bull sale catalogues that will be flooding into their homes which leads to kitchen table discussions and decision time as to what bulls to buy and who to source them from. The 2023 fall calf run was very strong and in fact many producers received prices that they have never seen before. Was it good enough? For some it never will be, but I think we can agree that it was indeed a much-needed improvement. Although seasonal and traditional pressure was put on prices late in the calf run, it was less than usual and prices for heavier weight calves were often better than originally expected. Bred females finished the year strong with reputation bred Simmental influenced heifers selling for well over $5000. While the sales provided some producers with the opportunity to expand their numbers, that was again tempered by feed supply and feed pricing. Just imagine how good it could be in 2024 if Mother Nature decides to smile at us and cooperate. It is doubtful that expansion of the beef cow herd will happen in the short term until producers in Western Canada have a year of good weather and feed supplies are replenished. That should help calf prices stay relatively strong and here is hoping that 2024 is an even better year.

16

The 2023 fall run was very similar to 2022 with heavy weight Simmental influenced calves bringing a premium to their lighter weight counterparts and Simmental cross calves were in higher demand regardless of their gender. As usual, heifers were at a discount, but the reputation of the Simmental maternal strength is well known and the discounts on Simm-Cross heifers were usually less. While price per pound premiums for Simmental influence were seen as compared to calves of other breeds, the bigger gain was usually seen in payweight, especially when compared to straight bred British calves. Breed identity, or the crossbred stamp, continues to be an obvious advantage as a “money stripe” or a blaze face on a calf of any color earns a premium because it indicates Simmental influence. A blue Simmental RFID tag back button is also an advantage as it helps buyers identify Simmental genetics in those calves. It is a great idea to use these blue CSA endorsed back buttons in your marketing efforts and is another benefit that the CSA provides of using registered Simmental bulls in your program. Smart and timely marketing has always added value to a producer’s calves, and it has never been more important than right now. The 2024 bull sales are fast approaching, and people will need to upgrade their bull inventory once again. The demand for quality Simmental bulls will again be strong and there has never been a larger selection of top-quality Simmental bulls for sale. Traditional, black, red, polled, horned, power bulls or bulls to breed heifers will be available throughout all regions of Canada. Most breeders will have information available to assist with your selection decision but if it isn’t Canadian Simmental Association provided and endorsed, then ask yourself why as we work diligently at providing that information to our members. Also make sure the animal is registered with the CSA, applied for, or pending doesn’t cut it and means absolutely nothing! You need the information provided to you to be as accurate as possible through our programming and not simply a result of some “may contain program” that just wants to sell you a bull. There has never been a better supply of top-quality Simmental bulls available for sale that can benefit your bottom line, and Simmental breeders are ready to welcome you to their farm or ranch to check out what they have available either through 2024 bull sales or by private treaty!

Breed

IMPROVEMENT

By Sean McGrath Breed Improvement Coordinator for the Canadian Simmental Association

Simple Traits in a Complex World Perhaps the question I am most often asked regarding genetics is how full sibs or animals with the same pedigree can have different EPD. A good way to explain this is through a pedigree tree. In this example, we are going to breed Mr. Greenlight to Miss Redlight to create 2 full sibs (Greenlight JR and Miss Redlight 2) which we will then mate to produce a sample of 10 full sibs that represent just a few of the thousands of potential outcomes (Figure 1).

Figure 1. A pedigree tree showing 2 matings of Mr. Greenlight to Miss Redlight and the subsequent mating of full sib offspring Greenlight JR and Miss Redlight 2 to produce 10 calves.

assume the same thing for Ms. Redlight. This massive oversimplification means that the original animals in the pedigree can only pass on one version of each gene they possess. In the first mating we get one male calf and one female calf. They each contain one gene copy from Mr. Greenlight and one copy of each gene from Ms. Redlight. The pedigree tree is shown fleshed out to show the actual chromosomes and DNA that are passed forward (Figure 3.). If we look at the example, it is apparent that even though Mr. Greenlight Jr and Miss Redlight 2 have the same parents (they are full sibs) that Figure 2. Mr. Greenlight’s chromosome pairs they have 1 chromosome in pair 3 that is completely different (circled). If they did not, they would both be the same sex. In this second generation, it also appears that the chromosomes and thus the DNA of these 2 full sibs are very close.

Our logical mind may say at this point that these offspring should be very similar. After all, the pedigree is identical on both sides of the final mating. This would be a very tightly linebred scenario. Let’s follow our example through in a bit more detail and see what happens. First, we need to understand that every calf is a combination of ½ of the genes from the sire and ½ from the dam. These genes are spread across 60 chromosomes or 30 pairs. For this example, we are going to simplify things and use 3 pairs of chromosomes to make our point. We will use Mr. Greenlight’s chromosomes as an example (Figure 2.). There are two pairs of regular chromosomes (Pair 1, Pair 2) and 1 pair of sex chromosomes (Pair 3). The sex chromosome will determine if the calf is a male or female. If Mr. Greenlight passes on the small chromosome in pair 3 the calf will be male. If he passes on a large chromosome from pair 3 the calf will be a heifer. To further simplify we will assume that Mr. Greenlight is homozygous for every gene in his DNA. In other words, for every gene both of his copies are the same. We will Figure 3. Chromosome map of the pedigree tree for Mr. Greenlight and Miss Redlight matings and subsequent full sib matings.

In the next generation, things start to look more complicated. To understand this, it is important to realize that animals do not pass on an exact replica of one of their original chromosomes. During the process of meiosis (producing sperm and eggs) the chromosomes will trade parts of their DNA with the other partner in their chromosome pair. This is called random recombination and is very important as it produces much of the variation that allows animals and populations to adapt to changing conditions over time. This variation is a key driver of evolution and is what creates the differences that allow cattle breeders to select cattle that fit their long-term goals. Again, these 10 calves represent a very simplified example of the potentially infinite combinations that can occur just in this simple breeding example. Looking at the chromosome profile of the example calves, we can see DNA that ranges from exact copies of grandparent DNA, matches to parent DNA and combinations that looks vastly different from any previous generations. This is all happening in a full sib mating situation. If animals are less closely related, the phenomenon could be even more pronounced. To flesh things out a bit further let’s examine 4 of the offspring from the chromosome diagram as examples (Figure 4, 5, 6, 7). We will assume for the purposes of our example that there are only 3 traits, calving ease which is all on chromosome 1, weaning weight that is contained on chromosome 2 and sex that is determined simply by which copy of pair 3 is received from the sire. Let’s further assign a genetic value to the genes on each of the first 2 chromosome pairs (Table 1.). By using some simple math based on what DNA the calf received we can thus assign an EPD for Calving Ease and Weaning weight to our 4 examples and see how the same pedigree can result in a very different EP Looking at some of the potential outcomes shown in the chromosome chart, we can start to see that things can get complicated quickly. In real life, cattle have 10 times as many chromosome pairs, hundreds of times as many traits and thousands of times as many genes. Instead of the genes for complex traits like growth or fertility being contained on a single chromosome they are spread across the genome of the animal (Figure 8).

Table 1.

Green Red

Figure 4, A male calf that received all Green genes His genetic value is CE -20 and WW +100. Genetically the calf is identical to the original Mr. Greenlight.

Pair 1 Calving Ease -20 +20

Figure 5. A female calf that received 1/2 Green and 1/2 Red genes. Her genetic value would be the average of Green and Red with CE 0 and WW +75.

Pair 2 Weaning Weight 100 50

Figure 6. A male calf with approximately 70% Green genes and 30% Red genes. His resulting genetic value is CE -8 and WW +85.

Figure 7. A female calf with Red genes on pair 1 and Green genes on pair 2. Her resulting CE is +20 and WW is +100.

How Do We Figure Out the Complex Problem of What Genes are Passed On? If we head back to the original comment regarding the most common question received regarding genetic evaluation and why an animals EPD may be different from a full sib or even from the parental average, I think the chromosome example starts to explain how some of that variation may occur. Through the process known as random recombination of genes, each new generation, every sperm, and every egg contain a unique portion of sire and dam DNA. This is extremely important for animal breeders as it lets us create/select genetics that can accomplish specific goals. For example, in our simplified 3 chromosome world, we can see how we could create a “curve-bender” animal with all red genes at pair 1 (easy calving) and all green on pair 2 (heavy weaning weight). Fortunately, there is a lot of genetic overlap between animals, and so we can start to predict potential outcomes. The first basic step is to start with the assumption that offspring will be the average of the sire and dam. This is generally a safe place to start. The second step is to collect performance data on the animal and the other animals that it is managed with. If we managed the 10 offspring shown in our Chromosome chart together, we would expect to see some performance differences in Calving Ease and Weaning Weight. These differences can help to inform us about how much Green vs. Red genes each individual carries. In the real world it is a bit more complex, looking more like Figure 8., so we use more complex methods to help determine the DNA contained in each animal. If the animal has offspring, we can use the information from their performance to help us figure out the genetics of the parent stock with increased accuracy.

Figure 8. A more realistic graphic depiction of 30 chromosome pairs containing multiple genes per chromosome. Note that the calf is a male (Small Y chromosome in the top right)

Finally, with today’s technology we can conduct a high-density DNA test in which we go directly into the DNA of the animal and look at what components are present in the genotype of the animal. In some cases, this may be for a single gene such as colour (homozygous black for example) or it may be for a more complex set of traits spread across multiple chromosomes such as growth, longevity, or carcass merit.

As we determine more information about the DNA an animal contains it is possible that the animal may change from our original prediction or away from the parental average or even from full siblings. Thinking about genetic recombination and variation explains the importance of continuing to measure and collect the data that is crucial for understanding each new generation of genetics. This simplified example also reveals some of the power of modern genetic evaluations to navigate through an animal’s genetic map and determine their relative genetic merit for various traits. This is a tremendously powerful tool for seedstock breeders when we are sorting through genetic recombination and variability to select towards specific goals. The power of recombination is that it lets us breed some cattle that are beyond expectation. By measuring cattle and participating in genetic evaluation, we can then identify those cattle and use them moving forward to help reach our goals.

ADVICE By Roy Lewis, DVM

SCROTAL MEASUREMENTS AND OTHER SEMEN TESTING TIPS Semen testing of the yearling bulls is just around the corner and herd sires comes later. When purchasing a bull or selling purebred bulls always make sure a semen evaluation accompanies him. Producers should always ask for a semen evaluation. Look at it thoroughly and make sure the pass box is ticked off. Then look for the specifics and the scrotal size if within normal parameters and is what you want. Back in 2013 - already ten years ago - the scrotal circumference minimums for age were changed just slightly - some not at all. The minimums are there for a very good reason, as almost every time if you semen test a bull even one cm below the minimum, he likely would not pass based on semen quality. All purebred producers should have a scrotal tape and use it at culling or selection time on the young bulls. It gets you familiar with how to use it. I highly recommend the “reliabull” scrotal tape which has been the main one used in Canada because of the spring mechanism that keeps everybody consistent. Consistency between producers and veterinarians is what we all strive for. If done right, there never should be more than a one cm discrepancy, in my opinion. That is whether producer or veterinarian is doing it. You are then not surprised if one is a little short on scrotal size when your herd veterinarian semen tests them because you have also measured them. Producers and veterinarians can overall be very consistent this way. Measuring the widest part of the scrotum and pulling compressing scrotal skin till you see the red part of the plunger - this means stop and read it right then.

size is moderately heritable so that has been accomplished generally in short order. I have always said on mature bulls anything above 39 cm is just bragging rights. In studies they have found bigger bulls do not on average produce any more semen. My other worry if we breed big testicled genetics to big testicles genetics, they can get too big. Bigger is not always better in the testicle world. Other veterinarians will vouch for me when we see yearlings being an abnormal amount above breed average - it may be cause for concern. The semen test will be the final reckoning but I have definitely seen abnormally big-testicled bulls fail. I have heard in many breeds say the testicles are not big but they are longer. There is differences in shape between bulls but the scrotal circumference is easy to do, reliable, and puts everyone on the same page. Again, if looking at U.S. bulls or selling into that market remember the U.S. veterinarians just pull the tape snug and so their scrotal circumferences are going to be inflated 2 cm to Canadian readings.

Semen testing on the yearling bulls; besides semen quality and scrotal size, we are looking for other oddball things such as warts, frenulum’s, hair rings, cuts, preputial infections and seminal vesiculitis being the main ones. Fortunately, if found, many of these things can be corrected right at the time of the semen test. If you happen to see a yearling bull with a big wart on his penis, have that attended to ahead of time. The semen test will then be the recheck, as all the conditions mentioned above will almost always be rechecked by the Your bulls can be measured at a younger age than a year, but keep in mind your veterinarian to make sure healing has fully occurred and no other issues have cut off for scrotal size will be a lot lower. I have seen an adjusted amount of .04 developed. cm day as an average predicted growth rate so just over 1 cm a month. You are trying to eliminate the real small ones and you may find badly misshapen or If you can’t get semen on an apparently normal bull using a bigger probe not fully descended testicles - these are obvious culls as well. If measuring say with more contact, the veterinarian can tip the probe or get a weighed probe. 10-month-old Simmental bulls, I may use a minimum of 33 (yearling minimum) Massaging is the other thing that may be tried depending on how the bull is -2 = 31 cm as say a minimum. They are then removed early at a younger age responding. We want to give every opportunity to collect good quality semen before effort has been put into promoting, picturing, clipping, videoing, etc. if it is there to evaluate. In extreme cases I have had a refractory bull to the Then even the castration will be easier on them and less risky. Go by the beef ejaculator breed a cull cow and pull the semen and vaginal mucus out and code and use the appropriate pain killers. You don’t have your veterinarian evaluate that way. In this case you can even watch his ability to breed at the trying to semen test an inferior bull. This is why as veterinarians the initial pass same time. As breeders, it is always best to ask purchasers to try and watch at rate on yearling bulls will be considerably higher of course on the pre-selected least one mating to make sure young bulls have the desire and physical ability to breed. This is what we can’t check, and sometimes they need more time and candidates. patience, and other times they never do and need to be culled. You want to semen test only bull calves older than a year of age and preferably the closer to fifteen months the better, because under a year, they are just not Here’s to a smooth sailing calving season with minimal issues and good results ready. If in an early sale I would measure and palpate their reproductive organs semen testing with no big surprises. You all have a very safe and prosperous but would say ‘too young to test and refer until a later date’. It is phenomenal holiday season and a great start to 2024. to me how quick breeders have increased scrotal size by selection. Scrotal

Figure 1.

Figure 4.

50

Figure 5.

Figure 6.

Figure 7.

Another year is upon us. Ringing in a new year brings renewed optimism and a blank slate as we work to accomplish our goals for the year. It’s been a challenging couple of years with subsequent years of adverse weather and recovering from the impacts of the pandemic, and yet, I remain optimistic for the future. This optimism is fueled by the tremendous opportunities available to grow our exports of Canadian beef. Last year, it was a privilege to represent Canadian cattle producers on two trade missions to Japan and southeast Asia. These were eye-opening experiences that gave me an appreciation and understanding of the attributes that our current and potential buyers are looking for in a beef product. All I can say is our product is sought after - - and Canada is a trusted producer and supplier of beef for many countries in southeast Asia. The demand is there for our product. The challenge now is growing our cow herd to capture these opportunities and removing the barriers that can impact the entry of our product into export markets. My goal for this year is to look at how we can expand our herd – which has contracted due to the impacts of adverse weather conditions. Of course, the easiest solution is for Mother Nature to cooperate, but that’s one factor that we don’t have any control over. But, by coming together as an industry and working together, we can explore ways to overcome the challenges and support the rebuilding of our cow herd. Advancing our advocacy work to improve the business risk management (BRM) program offerings for the cattle sector and making investments in building a strong next generation is a good place to start. We need to foster enthusiasm and harness the ideas of young producers around the decision-making table. This is a key element to make sure there is a vibrant industry that is sustainable in the long-term. With the return of Parliament for the winter session, it won’t be long until the Federal Budget 2024 will be tabled in the House of Commons. The Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) submitted our key recommendations during the pre-budget consultation process. Since then, we have shared our recommendations with Parliamentarians. These recommendations include enhancements to BRM programs including seeking an amendment to the Livestock Tax Deferral (LTD) provision in the Income Tax Act to give producers the ability to self-elect rather than rely on a geographic determination, as well as expanding the provision to include all classes of cattle, not just the breeding herd and maintaining the interest-free portion of the Advanced Payments Program at the current $350,000 level. Another key factor that impacts the ability of cattle producers to capture export opportunities is technical barriers to trade. This is no surprise to many of us, as for years, we have been unable to take full advantage of the market access promised with the ratification of the Comprehensive and Economic Trade Agreement with the European Union. This is a frustrating reality that is threatening to repeat itself as Canada works to negotiate a new trade agreement with the United Kingdom (UK). Our message is simple. Canada needs to continue to push the importance of open trade principles and science-based policy. Decisions need to be based on science and not the politics of the day. The CCA board and staff

58

invested a significant amount of time on this file in 2023 – especially after the UK accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) was announced. We will continue to share this message in 2024. CCA has always been pro-trade. But, in this case, we couldn’t stand by as the strong and progressive trade rules accomplished in the CPTPP, would be weakened by allowing the UK to join without addressing the barriers that are keeping Canadian beef out of the UK market. We would never say no to trade, but we have to say no to a bad deal that puts Canadian cattle producers at an unfair disadvantage. We are urging the Government of Canada to delay ratifying the UK accession until these barriers are lifted. If you have not done so already, I encourage you to share your concerns with your Member of Parliament by sending an email through the “Say No to a Bad Deal” campaign. We need cattle producers from across Canada to keep amplifying this important message. Thank you to everyone who has already sent in their email. We can’t overcome this hurdle without you. If that isn’t enough, we are also seeing a push domestically through a Private Members’ Bill, Bill C-282: An Act to amend the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Act (supply management), that would take supply managed sectors off the table during trade negotiations. This could severely damage our trade relationships and highly constrain Canada’s ability to launch, negotiate, and renegotiate the best deals. At the bill’s core, it is not an agriculture bill, it is a trade bill that if passed, could impact all export focused businesses, 65 per cent of Canada’s economy. Our advocacy efforts will continue in 2024, to raise the volume on this issue include sending out letters, meeting with Senators, and cooperating with other relevant stakeholders to communicate the harmful effects of this Bill. We encourage producers across the country to help get the word out on why trade is so important to our sector and what it means to you, your family, and your local community. Please contact CCA at advocacy@cattle. ca if you’d like to help with our outreach efforts through social media or have any questions. Advocacy efforts are most effective when Parliamentarians hear from producers directly. There’s important work ahead of us in 2024 and we are committed to making things happen for our industry.

Good day, mate! My month of October might have been one of my most memorable ones yet as I made my way across the pond to the land down under! Before we headed to Australia, though, I could go back to my roots and help out at home with our annual female production sale at Anchor D Simmentals. Then, a quick turnaround as we boarded a plane for Australia. My first stop was Cairns, where I was able to go to the Great Barrier Reef. We also went on the Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail. After a few days in Cairns, my family and I returned to Brisbane before heading to Warwick for the Warwick Rodeo and Gold Cup Campdraft. During my time in Warwick, I was able to do

some school visits with the Warwick Rodeo Royalty. At each school visit, my favourite part was seeing the kid’s reactions when I told them that it was snowing back home. They were so excited, and all wanted to see snow. Remember that if you are not loving the snow right now, the Australian children thought it was incredibly exciting. Their favourite part was telling me all of their crazy snake and spider stories. This confirmed my new appreciation for the snow back home, as those types of friends can not live in Canada. On one of the other days, I was able to watch an auction market, which was a really unique experience as their cattle markets are set up very differently from ours. I toured the Australian Rodeo Heritage Centre and was introduced to Campdrafting, a genuinely incredible sport that takes excellent horsemanship. Another special day was riding horses in the “outback” through the kangaroos and flicks of cockatoos, a truly neat experience. In addition, I was even able to try some of the Australian cuisine; crocodile, sea bugs, lamb, kangaroo and vegemite!!

73

Thank you so much to the Warwick rodeo committee for having me a part of your rodeo and campdraft, as well as your incredible hospitality. I look forward to returning to Australia one day to visit again. In addition, thank you to G&T Custom Farming for making this incredible opportunity to go to Australia possible. As I made my way back to Canada, the 2024 Miss Rodeo Canada Contestants and I moved into our home away from home at the Baymont Inn and Suites in Red Deer for the Canadian Finals Rodeo! It was so exciting to have Miss Rodeo America Kennadee Riggs and Miss Rodeo Iowa Micah Barnes able to attend this year’s Canadian Finals. Every year at the CFR, we also hold our Miss Rodeo Canada contest, with eight contestants vying for the title of Miss Rodeo Canada 2024 this year. The 8 contestants competed in 5 categories over the course of 5 days. The girls were judged on public speaking, modeling, horsemanship, a written exam, and personal interviews. In addition, they were able to come along with me to meet some of our incredible sponsors that make CFR and the MRC program a success. Congratulations to Kaylee Shantz, the new Miss Rodeo Canada for 2024. Kaylee will do an excellent job representing next year, and I am excited to watch her journey. After the Canadian Finals, I went south to Kentucky for the Great Lake Circuit Finals. During my time in Kentucky, I was able to

74

watch the Miss Rodeo Kentucky pageant, tour the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory, as well as tour Churchill Downs! It was truly incredible to watch some races at such a legendary track. I also had the opportunity to meet up with some fellow Simmental breeders at the North American International Livestock Exposition. Thank you, Larry Maxy, for showing me around. Once I made my way back to Canada, Miss Rodeo Canada 2024, Kaylee and I visited Smithbilt so she could pick up some of her hats. Then we visited Leslie from Leslie Dawn Photography so that Kaylee could get her first official Miss Rodeo Canada photos for her autograph sheets. The next day, we returned to Calgary for the grand opening of a new Lammle’s store at 6711 Macleod Trail SW. This Lammle’s has not only your Lammle’s Western Wear essentials but also a beautiful boutique in the back. Nearing the end of the month, I made my way to Regina, Saskatchewan, for the Canadian Western Agribition and the

Maple Leaf Cricut finals. One of my favourite things about Agribition is everyone I know from the cattle industry. It was wonderful catching up with Bruce Holmquist, the Canadian Simmental Association General Manager, at the international reception. While in Regina, I watched the Miss Rodeo Agribition competition. Congratulations to Arianna Dyck, your first ever Miss Rodeo Agribition. There are so many things to do during Agribition, and I was honoured to be able to help at the stock dog opening, Ranch Rodeo, Beef Supreme and the Maple Leaf circuit finals every evening. As this month and my year come to a close, I will be heading to Las Vegas for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, my last official major event as Miss Rodeo Canada, to cheer on our Canadian Athletes and the 2024 Miss Rodeo America contestants. My time as Miss Rodeo Canada has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience that allowed me the privilege to participate in over 100 performances and travel over 130,000 km on this incredible journey. I am so thankful for all the places I have seen and the wonderful people I have met. The rodeo world is truly a family, and it was an honour to be welcomed into this family even more throughout this year. I know the future of this sport is bright, as rodeo is only getting bigger and better every year. Educating others about rodeo and bringing people back

to their roots is essential. I plan to continue bridging the gap between urban and rural by educating others on the importance of our Western heritage. As the dust settles, I am so thankful for all of the incredible opportunities that Miss Rodeo Canada has given me, as this experience will help propel me into my future endeavours. Thank you to my sponsors, the CPRA, my committee, family, friends, and everyone who made this journey unforgettable. In addition, I would like to make a huge thank you to the Simmental Country Magazine for following my journey this year. It has been wonderful to share my adventures in this magazine every month, and thank you to everyone who has been following my journey this year through the magazine as well. As this chapter of my life comes to a close, this is not a goodbye but more of an until next time. With Gratitude, Mackenzie Skeels Miss Rodeo Canada 2023

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

Ruby Briand

Bailieboro, ON

Scholarship Received Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation Scholarship Valued at $3000 Current Education Queens University Program Bachelor of Science, Nursing

I grew up in Bailieboro, Ontario where my family owns and operates Evergreen Farm. We run a herd of purebred Simmental and Simmental cross cattle. I am 18 years old and I am currently in my first year of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Queen’s University. I grew up exhibiting Simmental cattle through 4-H where I had the opportunity to show at various local, provincial, and national shows. I am very thankful for the opportunities that being involved with the Simmental breed has brought me. The agriculture industry has undoubtedly helped shape me into the person I am today. I look forward to giving back to youth and women in agriculture in a similar way it has supported me growing up. I extend my utmost gratitude to the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation for awarding me with the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation Scholarship.

Jackson Goudy

Stoughton, SK

Scholarship Received Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation Scholarship Valued at $3000 Current Education Western College of Veterinary Medicine Program Veterinary Medicine

My name is Jackson Goudy, and I am in my third year of veterinary medicine at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. I grew up on a mixed cattle and grain farm in Southeast Saskatchewan near Stoughton. Growing up in a small community I was extensively involved in 4-H for fourteen years and various sports. I started a small purebred and commercial cow herd from a young age that has grown over the years. I started my journey away from home in 2019 when I attended the College of Agriculture before getting into vet med. Once I was accepted into veterinary medicine, I was on track to graduate vet school in 2025 and continue my plans of becoming a large animal veterinarian, with hopes of one day specializing in bovine reproduction.

Jordynn Rogers

Drayton Valley, AB

Scholarship Received Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation Scholarship Valued at $3000 Current Education MacEwan University Program Bachelor of Arts

I am from Drayton Valley where my sisters and I are slowly growing our own purebred herds while helping our parents with our commercial herd of Simmental X cattle. I have loved every opportunity that the agriculture industry has given me. Being in Edmonton for school, I miss this aspect of my life and take every opportunity to go back, help, and visit the farm at home. That said, I am in my second year at MacEwan University working towards a Bachelor of Arts, with the end goal of becoming an elementary school teacher.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

Carmen Wolfe

Carmen is in her fourth year of obtaining her Bachelor of Kinesiology at the University of British Columbia. Upon graduation, Carmen plans to attend Physiotherapy school where she hopes to focus on supporting and rehabilitating physical injuries within the farming community. Carmen’s connection to the Canadian Simmental Association is multi-generational with her parents Shane and Shannon Wolfe of Wolfe’s Fleckvieh (Sundre, AB) and grandparents John and Sue Wolfe previously of Jack Pine Simmentals (Peers, AB). The cattle industry has always been a big part of Carmen’s life. She grew up in a 4-H family, was actively involved in her family’s Fleckvieh operation (including owning her own cattle) and has many extended family members and friends who are cattle producers. Carmen would like to give an extensive thanks to the Friends and Family of the Canadian Simmental Foundation for selecting her for the 2023 Scholarship and supporting her academic journey.

Danica Davis Scholarship Received Trevor Vance - First Year Scholarship Valued at $3000 Current Education University of Prince Edward Island Program Honors BSs Biology (Pre-Vet)

Keene, ON

I am in my first year of university at UPEI studying to complete a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a specialization of Life Sciences. I am proud to have been raised alongside my twin brothers on a farm in the small town of Keene Ontario. Being part of the sixth generation on the family farm has empowered me to build a strong work ethic and a desire to always strive for my best. This determination is present in everything I am involved in, from athletics, 4H, academics, showing cattle and being on the farm. It is through community, participation in various 4 H clubs and being a part of the Simmental Association that I developed a desire to work toward veterinarian medicine. I hope to use my degree to improve the agriculture industry and promote animal health in rural communities.

2023 SSA COMMERCIAL BREEDER OF THE YEAR! WADELLA RANCH Wadella Ranch is located 11 miles south west of Kipling, Saskatchewan. It was established by Wade and the late Ella Joorisity in 1985. The early years of the operation consisted of cattle, registered Percheron horses, Quarter horses and an involvement in the PMU industry. In the early 90’s cattle were phased out of the operation to focus on the horse breeding program. Then the rebuild of a cow herd began in the early 2000’s with Wade’s youngest son Justin, and his intensions to stay at home on the farm after high school. By 2009, the focus shifted back solely to commercial cattle. Wade and Justin, as well as Justin’s wife Martina, now have a herd of over 400 red Simmental females. Their steer calves, as well as some heifers, are marketed on TEAM each fall, where they have been very well received, quite often topping the market for their weight range. Some packages of replacement females are marketed privately, as well as the Canadian Western Agribition commercial heifer show and sale, where they have been quite successful. Highlights from their successes of this event include top honors of Champion open heifers, multiple time reserve champion open heifers, as well as reserve champion bred heifers. In the early years of Wade and Justin’s cattle operation the herd was largely mixed but Simmental influenced. Before long, the cows were being bred exclusively to red Simmental bulls with the exception of their heifers being bred to Red Angus bulls. Although, once the decision was made to market on TEAM, the Red Angus heifer bulls were phased out to make way for calving ease Simmental Bulls. This resulted in a 100% Simmental sired calf crop as well as a nearly pure Simmental cow herd, producing steers bred to perform and strong replacement heifers. The breeds strong maternal traits combined with performance is what lead Wadella Ranch to their firm belief in the Simmental breed. They source top end bulls from reputable Simmental breeders from across Saskatchewan, as well as a few from neighboring provinces. Simmental genetics will continue to be the mainstay to the ongoing improvement in the Wadella Ranch breeding program.

Wade, Justin, and Martina would like to express thanks for being chosen for this award. They are humbled and honoured to be recognized in this way by the Saskatchewan Simmental Association.
