As I sit and reflect on the beef business over the past year, it seems a lot has changed. As any commodity in the market place, too much growth in a short time usually will have to pause, then set back before it can start to climb at a more sustainable pace. I believe this is what we seen happen in the fall of 2016. The price you received for your calves was down from the previous fall but still heads and tails higher than most on a ten year average. As we watch the market place moving forward, I do believe we will see a more sustainable growth pattern that will allow producers to see record profitability in future months and years. The Simmental breed has played a very important role in moving the beef business forward. Not only will it add mega pounds which equal dollars to your calf crop each fall, it will strengthen your cowherds by adding fertility, longevity and maternal strength. It is a breed that can add color, from red, black to chrome, to any cowherd in one single cross while not sacrificing any of these desirable traits. This year’s offering is a very fresh, diverse group consisting of the strongest set of red and black bulls this group has sold to date. Many of the hottest and most sought after genetics will be represented in this year’s sale. The fullblood section of the sale is as stout as ever offered, as well. Again the genetics offered in this group are among the most exciting in the industry. The combined offering will excel in performance, structural correctness, phenotype and disposition. The breeders from which these bulls originate are backed with years of experience and longevity, providing Simmental seed stock for cow calf producers who want a quality product for an honest dollar from a reputable home. They are here for the long haul and realize the challenges in the cow/calf business and what is necessary for your success which will lead to their own successes as well. Jumbalaya is a deep, big barreled bull out of cow family that will consistently produce this type of animal no matter who they are bred to. He definitely has a herd bull look to him. I seriously considered keeping Mosaic in the herd for my use. I am really impressed with this bull. He does what he is supposed to: grow with little effort. His sire Chandler is a new bull we used last year and the females I have retained from him, well let’s just say I may have to put a big padlock on my keeper pen. They are really impressive. Chandler has been easy calving on second calvers and small cows and throws dark red with good pigment and it looks like he is putting a good foot on his offspring too. I wish I had a whole truck load of bulls to bring to town like El Nino. He is a solid, big barreled, big butted bull going once again back to our Faline cow family. His mom Flossy is as solid as they come with excellent feet and udder on her. As a matter of fact, in the 20 years of having this bloodline, we have yet to get one bad udder or teat out of this cow family. When Flossy was a heifer, she not only raised her calf but took on two orphans on her own and raised 1600 pounds of calf come weaning, never lost any conditioning over that summer and was the first one to calve the next season. Having Chandler as his sire really sweetens the pot. Bulls or heifers out of El Nino should be heading to the keeper pen. I think he would cross really well with some Charolais based cows.

“Born Lucky” is a smaller framed but thick butted bull, going back to another top cow family on the place. His grand dam, Larissa, is probably tied with Heaven’s Kiss as being the top cow on the place. Larissa currently has a heifer out of Chandler that is probably the best heifer we have ever raised here. Both Chandler and Wichita throw solid, dark colored calves. Chandler is the most consistent bull for birth weights. The calves are within a pounds of each other. Born Lucky may be smaller than the pen mates and he may be the sleeper of the sale, but he could also be the diamond in the rough.

Since birth ‘Marksman’ has been catching the eye of many cattlemen visiting the farm and is my personal favorite in the group. He is good! Thick, thick, thick with muscling going down his leg like huge ham hocks. Big footed and super disposition. No surprise though, a very typical “Heavens Kiss” offspring. His mother raised a super bred heifer that we sold in our sale going to the Turkos at JS Simmentals. They have offspring from this cow family; ask them what they think of them. I will never sell this cow. She is what this industry needs, having the ability to raise big calves on little feed. As of catalogue time, we are still waiting on DNA for confirmation to sire as the dam was exposed to two possible sires. Regardless if it’s Wichita or Double Bar D United doesn’t matter; it’s what’s on the ground that counts.

I’m excited to write the footnotes on this bull. His sire needs no introduction. Double Bar D United is a bull we purchased for $112,000 two years ago and “Best Defence” is the first United calf of ours to sell. Backed by the best in the industry, this young bull should continue in the footsteps of his peers. We only had a few cows to breed to United that first year, so we are limited on the offspring. His second crop of calves are looking really, really good. The bulls on offer have a little bigger birth weights but the cows were brought into the corral extra early last year and I think that played a big part in bigger weights on the later calves born. Talking to other producers who had United calves last year, they say they calved out moderate birth weights. Take it any way you like, but regardless, this is a good bull.

Deliverance is the second United calf offering we have. He is a bigger boned bull that should raise females with good feet and udders. He has a bigger birth weight but his mom didn’t raise a calf the previous year, so when it came time to calve, she was probably pushing 1900 pounds. She also went over her due date by six days and was brought in early with the other cows, so I think his birth weight could be adjusted a bit. A maternal brother sold to Byron Haglund two years ago.

Unedawut? Calving ease bull? This could be the bull for you. He may not be flashy like the rest but who cares if the calves are coming out easy. He is a smaller framed bull but just as thick as the big boys. That’s what I liked about Haldor 910A. Calves come out easy but he puts a good square rump on them. This bull is pumped to go to work. Haldor 910A is one of my favorite bulls of all time. I wouldn’t have changed a thing about him, but unfortunately we lost him last spring so we don’t have many offspring from him. Bonus: we have many Nug Raptor females in the herd and they stand out. Excellent females.

The right of property shall not pass until after settlement has been made; no invoicing on buyers in attendance, unless previous arrangements have been made. Every animal sells to the highest bidder and in cases of disputes, the auctioneer’s decision will be final. Current exchange rates will be announced sale day. All monies are in Canadian funds. Bidding Each animal will sell to the highest bidder... no by-bidding will be permitted. Disputes - Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved in dispute. If no further bidding is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision on all disputes will be final. Announcements All announcements made from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay close attention to such disclosures. Breeder’s Guarantee All bulls sold are guaranteed breeders by the owners. We guarantee to provide you with a sound breeding bull. Should any bull fail to be an unsatisfactory breeder, he will be replaced with a bull of equal value, or a credit will be given toward the purchase of another bull. If you have a problem with your bull please notify us immediately. Under no circumstances will the seller be liable for more than the purchase price of the animal. Exception Guarantee In cases where the animal is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproduction techniques after the sale, this guarantee shall be null and void. Certificate of Registration Each animal will carry papers issued by the Canadian Simmental Association. A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer for each animal after payment has been made. Liabilities All persons attend the sale at their own risk.
