SEBASTIAN AUERNIG WSFF PRESIDENT
It is a great honour to extend a warm welcome to all Simmental-Fleckvieh friends from around the world! We are meeting in Canada this year to share our knowledge and experiences about the SimmentalFleckvieh breed.
Canada is such a beautiful country and well suited for cattle breeding. Not only in Canada, but worldwide, cattle play an immensely important role in nutrition. They consume and rejuvenate the world‘s grassland, which accounts for 70% of the world’s arable land. Most importantly they convert that grass and forage into high-quality protein which is essential for human nutrition.
Seen in this light, cattle turn our grassland regions into truly livable and productive areas. I am delighted that Simmental cattle play a prominent role in this which has made our breed the largest bos taurus cattle breed in the world. With the unique characteristics of dual purpose and specialization in meat, our breed has a significant impact on overall food production in many countries. New and enhanced breeding selection methods around the world facilitate more rapid genetic improvement, combined with the exchange and use of special genetics from our own individual countries. Breeding progress is also improving, giving us the opportunity to focus not only on performance traits but also on health traits, i.e. the entire fitness complex. We want to discuss these and many other topics at this Congress.
We will also ensure that our personal encounters and the exchange of experiences across borders and even continents are not neglected. Together with the organizing team, we look forward to meeting every visitor and hope for lively technical and other discussions. A big thank you goes to Bruce Holmquist, his organization team and the Canadian Simmental Association for hosting the congress. It takes a lot of work, a tremendous effort and probably a few worries to organize such an event. I am convinced that it will be a success and will open many new perspectives and interesting experiences about Simmental Fleckvieh cattle breeding. I am looking forward to interesting presentations, discussions and hopefully many conversations with experts and active Simmental Fleckvieh breeders from all over the world and I am positive that this congress will contribute an important step in the development of our breed.
Canada Simmental has chosen to use the same slogan as 2006, One Breed One World, and it is now true more than ever!

- FROM YOUR HOSTS -
Mader Ranches is a family run purebred Simmental & SimAngus cattle operation, located only 10 minutes west of Carstairs, Alberta, Canada. Ryley and Jill and their children Stella & Hawkin, work together with Randy and Ronda to run the daily operations and business. Randy and Ronda have been in the cattle industry for 47 years.
Our focus is on raising functional cattle with easy fleshing ability and natural muscle expression. We are always sourcing for herd improvement through new genetics and a hard culling system. We have an extensive AI and embryo program that we utilize to create uniformity and quality.
We sell females, embryos, and semen privately off the farm and in fall consignment sales. Our bulls are held until late February for our annual Bull Power Sale selling approximately 90 bulls and a handful of select females.
We use the show ring as a marketing tool and participate in the major shows in Canada - Canadian Western Agribition, Edmonton International Farmfair and Olds Fall Classic.

FROM YOUR HOSTS -
Clearwater Simmentals made its debut in the Simmental world in 2012. I come from a long line of Simmental enthusiasts; my maternal grandfather, Gordon Bowhay took a liking to the breed and introduced Fleckvieh Simmentals into his commercial herd. He quickly saw the benefits of crossing Simmental with his British based herd. Gordon used the first Sir Arnold 809G genetics and continued to build his herd into a predominately Simmental based herd. In the early 80’s my parents, Rick & Sandra began “Smith Simmentals” with Fleckvieh breeding stock which we all enjoyed until their dispersal in 2008/2009. Like most ranch kids, I participated in 4-H as well as being actively involved with my parents’ herd.
My first female purchases were from Dave & Laurie Strusrude (DSLS), Wolfes Fleckvieh (SJWW), WaNaLaPa Simmentals (WNLP), South
Seven Simmentals (SSL) and Bonchuck Farms (BLCC). From those 5 animals; eleven calving seasons, numerous sales, eleven years later; my herd has now grown to a total of 90+ breeding females.
My appreciation for the breed has grown each year and it has been fascinating to watch the progression of the breed whilst being actively involved. I was a Director of the Alberta Simmental Association for 3 years, and it was very satisfying to work with the association to continue to make Simmental influenced cattle the forefront in the commercial industry.
Clearwater markets bred females at the SimPower sale each December; yearling bulls and a select group of open females at “The Event” bull sale in Olds, this year on February 28, 2024. We breed with the best of intentions to develop cattle that work well for our herd or their new owners. It’s also very exciting to add new animals to our herd from the wide selection of sales throughout the year.
Not only does the Simmental breed have the best livestock, but dare I say, the breed can boast about having the friendliest people in the cattle industry, commercial and purebred breeders alike.
We welcome all and are pleased to be able to host fellow breeders to bring their cattle to my farm located just south of Highway 27, approximately 20 minutes west of Olds.
Anchor D Simmentals Ltd. is a fourth-generation operation located at Rimbey, Alberta. Dan & Karen Skeels along with their kids Mackenzie & Garren own and operate the ranch. Dan purchased his first registered animal in the fall of 1981 at age 10 and the herd has continued to grow to its present-day numbers. The breeding herd consists of approx. 600 registered females. The breakdown of the herd is about 350 Fullblood Fleckvieh, 100 Red & Black Purebreds, 100 Charolais and 50 commercial cows which are used as recipients. Anchor D Ranch hosts an annual bull sale the second Friday of February, as well as an annual female production sale the second Friday of October. They also host 4 “Anchor D Sired” calf sales the first week of October at different auction markets; Rimbey, AB; Ponoka, AB; Westlock, AB & Dawson Creek, BC.
Anchor D Simmentals Ltd. is honoured to be one of the host farms at this year’s World Simmental Congress.

The World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation Congress
is the place to be this summer!
The countdown is on towards one of the biggest events and celebrations that current Canadian Simmental breeders will have the opportunity to be a part of. First held in Canada in 1978, the Canadian Simmental Association hosted the second World Simmental Federation congress in Calgary. It was approximately a decade after Parisien arrived on Canadian soil as part of the “exotic boom” of the 1960’s. It was a time of incredible promotion and hype as producers and investors grew the excitement and demand for Simmental cattle in North America.
Some of the historic data and information records that the Simmental show at the Calgary Stampede saw approximately 530 head paraded in front of Judge Jonathon Fox, who on his wellmannered horse Hal, proceeded to place the cattle in what was a very long show and held over four days. The 1100 plus spectators attending the show were said to have been quite impressed with both the quality and numbers of animals found in this very young breed.
There was also a sale featuring 80 lots for a total gross of $450,000 and averaged $5556.00.
The next World Congress hosted in Canada was in 2006, and was an event and celebration that was also held during the Calgary Stampede. Before that, however, a pre-tour that traveled to events and farms in Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan was enjoyed by many international guests before arriving in Calgary for the last breed show that was held at the Stampede grounds. The 2006 Congress show featured nearly 250 head that were paraded before judges Blaine Harland and Barry Labatte. A sale followed with 41 lots averaging over $9000.00, in very strong demand.
Fast forward eighteen years to 2024, and the Canadian Simmental Association is once again very proud to be hosting the World Congress and taking it back to its original format. We will be hosting Simmental/Fleckvieh breeders from around the world and bringing Canadian breeders together in one location for tours, excitement, and a true celebration of the Simmental/Fleckvieh breed. A highlight will be seeing the largest National YCSA Junior show in the history of Canadian Simmental. The YCSA along with all the Congress committees have worked very hard in planning a world class event in Calgary, Olds, and surrounding areas. Following the YCSA show we will gather for a banquet that will include the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation auction as well as special guest George Canyon, who will entertain us.
The CSA would also like to thank the WSFF for their support in travel funding for “Young Members” from other countries to join us as we revive the International Round-table discussion that was started in 2006. It is always a positive thing when we connect our youth together to discuss production practices and issues that are common between all of our various countries.
There is also a World Simmental Fleckvieh sale managed by Bohrson Marketing and held at their sale facility. This promises to be a highlight of our time at the Congress and stay tuned for other exciting and interesting stops in our itinerary.
We welcome everyone to Alberta and encourage you to share the excitement of being involved in Simmental breed!

Breed IMPROVEMENT
By Sean McGrath Breed Improvement Coordinator for the Canadian Simmental Association
CANADIAN SIMMENTAL THE TOTAL PERFORMANCE PICTURE
One of the key roles of the Canadian Simmental Association is to provide tools to members who wish to make genetic advancements within the breed. While breeders may not always agree on exactly what path to take, the collection of tools provides a way for breeders to accomplish their individual goals and serve their customers. Simmental are represented across much of the Canadian cowherd because of their various strengths, but also because of breeders’ abilities to target regional and cowherd specific needs for their customers.
Pedigree
The CSA tracks generations of pedigree for breeders. This is the original and one of the legal mandates of the breed as specified under the Animal Pedigree Act. The pedigrees held collectively at the Canadian Simmental represent the history and current genetics within the breed and are the backbone through which breed improvement programs are built.
Total Herd Enrolment
One of the key areas in which Simmental cattle excel is on the female side. Maternal strengths of Simmental cattle are well acknowledged through out the Canadian and global industry. CSA operates the Total Herd Enrolment (THE) program, to track cow inventory and total herd performance over time. This approach allows interested members to obtain unbiased performance data such as birth and weaning data, but more importantly is underpinned with breeding and lifetime cow track record information which is a primary driver of commercial industry success. As well, through the THE program, the CSA also collects unique data such as calf vigour, cow mothering ability, and complete breeding information. Work is ongoing on many of these areas to incorporate this data into genetic evaluation, to empower breeders to serve the industry with both the performance and maternal aspects of the breed.
Ultrasound Programs
The CSA currently aids with carcass ultrasound for interested herds. This program is tied to DNA testing as well, so that members can benefit from data and the enhanced accuracy provided by modern day DNA technology. This program helps to address the genetic impact of Simmental on the final product, beef. Ultimately, beef is what brings new revenues into the industry and provides the true underpinnings of success.
DNA
The CSA provides several DNA testing options to membership, ranging from simple parentage-verification to trait testing such as black or polled through to high density DNA samples that are used directly in genetic evaluation.
IGS
CSA works with several partners in a group called International Genetic Solutions to conduct genetic evaluation and work on new research for traits that directly impact industry profitability. This weekly genetic analysis is conducted on over 20 million animals from partner breeds and provides a valuable selection tool for industry in terms of genomically enhanced EPD. CSA members contribute data, funding and expertise to IGS to leverage results for membership and their customers from the world’s largest multi-breed beef cattle evaluation. Additionally, results from the IGS evaluation are directly comparable with Simmental cattle from several additional countries, enabling more informed access to Simmental genes from outside gene pools.
Outreach and Extension
The CSA, on behalf of members also provides information to membership and broader industry about how to apply these genetic selection tools, ongoing research work and in some cases individual problem solving (I hope this article is a good example of that). Industry involvement also increases awareness of member efforts and allows Simmental to participate in other advanced research opportunities as well as help drive the overall industry forward.
The growth and success of the Simmental breed in Canada is based on the efforts of members to maintain and improve the strengths of the Simmental breed. Collectively, through the CSA they have developed tools that can greatly improve their ability to serve the larger industry through enabling of informed genetic selection through scientifically valid, advanced tools.
Any member can participate if they so desire and the strength of the breed reflects that individual breeder effort and contribution to the overall team. If you are interested in more information or participation in various CSA programs, please visit the website (www.simmental.com) or contact the Association.

PAST PRESIDENTS PAST PRESIDENTS READY FOR
2024 WSFF WORLD CONGRESS
Written by Lee Hart
As Simmental breeders from around the world are expected to be in Alberta in late July for the 2024 World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation (WSFF) Congress, three of the past WSFF presidents say the event is an excellent opportunity to not only learn the latest information on Simmental production and marketing, but to network and develop friendships with international counterparts.
The 2024 WSFF congress is being hosted by the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) and staged in Alberta with events in Calgary and nearby Olds from July 28 to August 4, 2024. The WSFF congress has been held every two years since 1976 with Canada hosting the event in 1978 and 2006. There are 24 member countries belonging to WSFF .
"For 2024 we've developed a full program that includes updates and technical sessions on genetics, herd health, trade and environmental issues to name a few topics," says Bruce Holmquist, CSA General Manager and a past WSFF President.
The opening and closing events of the congress will be held in Calgary, with most of the information and speaker sessions held at venues in Olds, a community about an hour north of Calgary.
Delegates will also have opportunity to have a first hand look at Canadian beef production with tours of three seedstock operations — Mader Ranches at Carstairs, the Anchor D Ranch at Rimbey and Clearwater Simmentals near Olds. The congress agenda also includes a stop at the Olds College agricultural show, AgSmart – that's a two-day crop and livestock ag technology show and there will be speakers and technical presentations in Olds, as well.
the congress and be part of a Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA) round table discussion. Aug. 3rd and 4th there will also be a YCSA show as well.
"The congress isn't all about business," says Holmquist. "There are several social and entertainment events as well." There will be a shopping excursion in Calgary to Lammles Western Wear, a tour of Rocky Mountain parks including Banff and Kanasakis country, a couple of banquets, and evening entertainment. Delegates are invited to attend a post conference event with a visit to the Calgary-area Strathmore Rodeo and Chuckwagon Races on the August 5, holiday Monday.
Organizers are expecting about 150 international delegates from about 15 countries to attend the WSFF congress, although some events will probably draw as many as 500 people including attendees from across Canada.
"It is valuable opportunity for breeders from around the world to attend technical sessions and hear updates on a wide range of production, animal health and trade matters," says Holmquist.
He points out that Simmental is a unique breed in many respects because in some parts of the world it is primarily a dairy breed, or is raised as a dual purpose breed producing both milk and beef. However in North America and several other countries it is raised only for beef.
"So it is of value for producers to understand how the breed has been adapted for different uses in different parts of the world," he says. "We don't have many dairy producers in Canada using Simmental, but there will be one session at the congress with an expert from Europe speaking about dairy production."
FRED SCHUETZE GRANBURY, TEXAS
FROM EUROPE
From the Czech Republic, Josef Kucera has been involved with the Simmental breed for more than 20 years. He's not a producer himself, but he has been involved at the administrative and executive level of livestock associations for many years. He served 15 years as CEO of the Czech Republic Simmental Association and for the past 10 years he has been CEO of an industry organization known as the Czech Moravian Breeder's Corporation, located 30 km south from Prague. It is responsible for registration and record keeping, and milk production and genetic data bases for all classes and species of livestock in the Czech Republic, including honey bees.
"I believe it is so important to be able to share information and exchange knowledge about the Simmental breed with other producers from around the world," says Kucera who attended his first WSFF technical meeting in Bozeman, Montana in 2003.
Along with being involved with the livestock industry work wise, Kucera has also been involved at the association level. He served as president of WSFF from 2012 to 2016 and was president of the European Simmental Association from 2007 to 2012.
"Here in the Czech Republic, Simmental are dual purpose cattle raised for both milk and beef production. So it is important that we share our knowledge with other producers and it is also of great value to attend technical sessions concerning the genomic progress being made with the breed in different countries."
He says while the Simmental breed has been adapted for different types of production and for different environments, the breed still has universally appealing genetics. "Some of our best animals in Europe are still sought after by producers in North America," says Kucera. "And with the European Union we are fortunate to have very good harmonization between European countries when it comes to the movement of livestock and livestock genetics. We have no obstacles or limitations with movement of cattle between countries. Our livestock industry is really globalized."
Kucera, who is planning to be in Alberta for the congress says he is pleased to see the WSFF encouraging the involvement of young Simmental breeders in the 2024 event. "It is so important to the Simmental breed and the agriculture industry have the young people involved and building connections and their own networks ," he says.
FROM TEXAS
And from Granbury, Texas (a community about an hour south of Fort Worth), Fred Schuetze says he is looking forward to attending the 2024 WSFF congress in Alberta. "I have been attending since 1992, so I am planning to be there," says Schuetze, who has been involved with the Simmental breed for more than 40 years. He served as WSFF president for two terms from 2018 to 2022 and has been on the WSFF board for more than 20 years.
Schuetze today is livestock manager for Simmentals of Texas (SOT), one of the first US purebred Simmental producers established about 56 years ago. The company today has a blended breeding program and is a producer and marketer of Full Fleckvieh, SimAngus, and Simbrah cattle.
BRUCE HOLMQUIST
CSA GM, PAST WSFF PRESIDENT
JOSEF KUCERA
CZECH REPUBLIC
FORMER CEO OF CRSA CEO OF CMBC
SOT " is focused on building a superior herd of each through genetic blending that will meet and exceed the needs of the Registered and commercial beef cattle industry."
Schuetze and childhood friend Les Alberthal developed Buzzard Hollow Ranch, a Fullblood Fleckvieh Simmental operation Schuetze has been with Simmentals Of Texas since it purchased the Buzzard Hollow Ranch Simmental herd in 2019.
"One of the most important aspects of attending the WSFF world congress is teaching or reminding Simmental producers where the breed originated and how it got to North America in the first place," says Schuetze. "Every year there are fewer of the original breeders left, so I believe it is important for producers today to know the history.
"By knowing the history it helps us understand the breed and what has allowed us to get to where we are today. Simmental is the #2 beef breed in the world and it got there because of its adaptability," says Schuetze. "Some people may be surprised to learn that the #1 breed in the world is Brahman and Brahman subsets , also known as Zebu or Indu Brazil cattle. They are more suited to tropical climates. So after that; the second most popular breed is Simmental."
Schuetze says the world congress is an excellent opportunity to talk to other producers from around the world about how they produce cattle in various environments. In some regions Simmental cattle are raised for milk or dual purpose milk and beef production, while in other countries such as Canada, the U.S. and Australia, for example, they are primarily raised for beef.
"I think it is great to be able to meet with people from different countries and hear about their different perspectives on raising Simmental cattle, different environments and different production techniques, "he says.
Schuetze says over his years with Buzzard Hollow Ranch and Simmentals Of Texas; he has dealt with many Alberta and Canadian Simmental breeders to acquire genetics and live cattle. "I use to travel up to Canada three or four times a year," he says. "It will be good to be back in Alberta to see old friends and make new ones as well."

PUREBRED BREEDERS HEALTH MANAGEMENT PRACTICES IN CANADA
With the world Simmental Fleckvieh Congress being held in Canada this year most of the delegates will have direct access to this copy of the Simmental Country. I thought as a review for the western breeders to outline common management health practices we do in the west would be a good idea. Most things are pretty similar in eastern Canada but many things may be quite different in other countries and could create discussion. All these vaccinations, treatments or other management procedures have evolved over time depending on what cattle may become afflicted with and also what is currently licensed to use in the country. Animal welfare is always a top concern and Canada has the “Beef Code of Practice” that we follow. If some of the terminology or products seem foreign to you ask many Canadian breeders that are your hosts. I know Bruce Holmquist (Canadian Simmental General Manager) and other breeders have attended other World Congresses, have judged them, and would be great reference sources if you have any questions about any of this.
First off vaccination is the key contributor to biosecurity, vaccinate what potentially your cattle could become exposed to. Diseases that are fatal or cause reproductive losses are of first concern. All this is done in Canada in co-operation with your herd veterinarian and vaccine protocols are sometimes very specific to a farm or ranch. Vaccinations for the many clostridial diseases such as blackleg or malignant edema, the respiratory viruses IBR, PI3, BRSV, BVD types 1 & 2 are given as well as the bacterial causes of pneumonia Histophilus, Mannheimia and sometimes Pasteurella is included in the mix to calves fairly routinely. The cows get all of the above vaccines with the exception of the bacterial causes of pneumonia. This can generally get fit in with two shots in calves and often cows get the abortion causing virus vaccines IBR and BVD either before breeding or veterinarians may recommend killed products during gestation. There are four main pharmaceutical companies that supply vaccines in Canada. Pharmaceutical companies have continually merged. There has also been a big uptake on intranasal vaccines in very young calves for the respiratory pathogens and these avoid maternal antibody interference so young calves get protection. This is really an add on vaccination in my eyes to protect calves in a window where they are susceptible.
I would say most herds especially purebreds cows and heifers get scour vaccines before calving. In commercial herds, especially
ones over 100 head, scour vaccination is very common. There are three good scour vaccines in Canada and often one looks at timing of the vaccine before calving to determine which one to use. Ill mention the three so anyone can look them up Guardian, Scour Bos, and Scour Guard in no particular order. These are all good vaccines and usage is more based on timing of vaccination as anything. Compliance in most herds to vaccination for all the core vaccines in Canada is about 80%. Ironically this was about the compliance with COVID vaccines in Canada with people.
Producers watch and keep biosecurity high, have creep areas for calves, and make sure colostrum management is high. We are fortunate in Western Canada that SCCL (Saskatoon Colostrum Company) makes some of the best air-dried quality colostrum powder in the world using first milking colostrum from dairies in Western Canada. The product is Headstart. Many producers now have a decent supply of Headstart around so any calf where there is any doubt about adequate colostrum they either have them suck or are tube fed with Headstart in 1.5-2 liters of water. Many producers disinfect tube feeders very well and often have one for sick calves and another is marked for newborns to minimize spread of anything. Check out the SCCL website for colostrum feeding strategies.
Regarding flies and parasites internal or external we have in Canada, the beauty of winter where everything is frozen and in suspended animation. This stops flies, freezes worm eggs and reduces the spread of everything from coccidia, cryptosporiosis, clostridial or anthrax spores are frozen in the ground. Winters in the west will kill about 95% of the parasitic larvae thus slowing down the spread. Summer for fly control, internal worms picked up on grass and fall for lice is what producers mainly focus on. Lice are an issue in Canada in the late fall and over the winter, and is treated with things like either the macrocyclic lactones (ivermectin) or the pymethrin related group 3 insecticides with names like Cylence, Saber, Boss or Clean Up II. We have seen reduced availability of some insecticides in Canada so flies are treated in midsummer with some products that are left in either the pour on form or in ear tags or cattle oilers. The most recent recommendation is to pulse treat only when you get 200 flies and over per animal evident. This cuts down usage and prevents resistance from developing.
+VETS ADVICEcontinued
Most non-breeding calves will be implanted with a growth implant and again three companies supply growth implants in Canada. They are extremely safe and there are specific uses for each. This would only be done once bull calves are castrated or the heifer replacements have been removed. It takes some practice to implant properly so be patient if learning. Implants depending on the type and length of activity will add from twenty-three pounds up above 60 lbs to live weight. They are a huge return in the cattle industry and add to its efficiency adding more pounds with less water, feed and time. A true carbon credit sort of thing. You will find 98 percent of cattle in Canadian and American feedlots are implanted.
Respiratory disease and lameness are our two most economical conditions. We use more and more NSAID’s (Non- Steroidal AntiInflammatory Drugs) for certain conditions to minimize antibiotic usage make recovery quicker and address in many cases the animal welfare (pain) in the case. There are multiple NSAIDs on the market in Canada as prescription products and they come in injectable, oral and pour on forms. Speaking of oral forms, there are now mineral/vitamin supplements such as Selenium and Vitamin A, D and E we once injected to newborn calves we can now give orally. There has generally been an increase in oral or pour on medications over injectable, which increases convenience, minimizing needle injections.
At birth most calves also get a CCIA tag, which is our national identification system. Producers will have gone with either the original yellow color and the Simmental breed has distinguished itself with a blue back for differentiation. With reproduction being such an important part to profitability and genetic progress, virtually all purebred bulls sold by breeders are semen tested if over a year of age. This eliminates any infertile or subfertile bulls. Commercial producers especially the larger ones generally test every bull every year. The veterinarians do a combination of scrotal circumference, semen motility, semen morphology as well as examine for the ability to breed such as structure abnormalities to the penis and other reproductive organs. It is comprehensive and I would say very well accepted across the industry. Heifers in some cases are palpated for reproductive soundness ahead of breeding or it is incorporated when they are pregnancy checked. Virtually all cattle are pregnancy checked yearly either by manual palpation or with the use of an ultrasound. The two main reproductive / respiratory diseases we protect against in the cow herd are IBR and BVD as previously mentioned. Other reproductive diseases such as leptospirosis, vibriosis and trichomoniasis are very rare in most regions in Canada in beef cattle so are vaccinated for or tested for in very specific instances.
As far as breeding goes all aspects are employed to varying degrees in Canada. Natural breeding to artificial insemination to synchronized breeding using AI. One has to watch these days in the cattle industry A.I. or artificial insemination to be differentiated to the A.I. or artificial intelligence that is out in the rest of the world. They kinda stole our acronym! Many purebred breeders use embryo transfer and there has been an increasing trend towards In vitro fertilization in the last few years and some sexed semen is being seen in a few AI programs. Beef on dairy semen is being used with increasing frequency and this of course would be black Simmental bulls. Other breeds such as Angus and Limousin are also used in this beef on dairy market.
I wanted to end by saying in Canada which is the country I know best there are very good information sources for producers. The breed association sites are excellent for especially genomic information contacts lists of breeders, merchandise etc etc. The Simmental Country is also a great source of information and if you are reading this you know all about that. It comes out seven times a year two of which go out to commercial cattlemen that have purchased bulls. Helping all the cattle breeds is the Canadian Beef Breeds Council. Canadian Cattlemens Assoc and its off shoot the BCRC (Beef Cattle Research Council) which has a myriad of printed materials linked to Youtube videos and there are webinars put on that are linked in an archive list. Great information for all cattlemen. They have just done a series of calf care videos. Easiest is to google “Calf 911” and see what comes up. They are really a series on ways we can save more calves whether purebred or commercial on our farms and ranches.
I want to personally welcome all visiting delegates and their families to the World Simmental Fleckvieh Congress. This article was to review for you what we more or less do in cattle production in Canada. If have questions talk to the purebred Simmental breeders, they are great people and have taught me a lot over the years and we have all progressed together. Enjoy the Congress, the networking, the exchanging of ideas and your time in Canada. You are always welcome here.

Le congrès mondial de la Fédération
Simmental Fleckvieh

FIFTY FIFTY HERDSIRES
National Voice Of Cattle Producers
Spring 2024 has brought new hope and started off with better weather-related conditions than last year.
We are still working with the federal government on the Livestock Tax Deferral Program for producers. Our first step was to have them acknowledge the importance of the program and its effectiveness in providing relief for producers in the April budget. Now, it’s time to expedite and roll out the program, which is a crucial tool for producers in times of natural disasters such as drought or floods.
This is one risk management tool we can have as producers to help ease our minds in the coming months. We will keep everyone informed of our progress on this front. Also on the advocacy front, CCA has requested a change to the Income Tax Act to include all classes of cattle and to allow producers to self-elect when they need to use the deferral. As I go through below, the opportunity for Canadian beef is great. Our herd is limited to what weather allows for feed production. The improvements to the tax deferral program are about an improved time of turnaround in herd size as weather and other conditions allow.
Prices have been strong this spring and demand for our quality Canadian beef continues to grow at home and abroad. In April, CCA and Canada Beef representatives participated in a trade mission to South Korea where we learned that the demand for our beef is at an all-time high. We are working with our federal government to reduce Canadian tariff rates – which are currently 16% - to match the U.S. tariff rates at 8%. This will level the playing field with our neighbors and open markets up.
I was in Mexico in May to attend the Confederación Nacional de Organizaciones Ganaderas’ (CNOG) annual meeting, as well as trilateral meetings. Keeping the flow of healthy herds was the primary focus at these meetings and producers from all countries involved are on the same page when it comes to working together. It’s sometimes the regulators that impede progress – but we are committed to working with them to ensure our producers keep all market options open.
On behalf of CCA and producers, I signed a united statement with the National Cattlemen’s (NCBA) President Mark Eisele and CNOG President Sr. Homero García de la Llata. The signed statement is available on CCA’s website: https://www.cattle.ca/wp-content/ uploads/2024/05/NCBA-CA-CNOG-CCA-Statement-05.15.2024_. pdf It outlines how we encourage our respective governments to continue working together to combat devastating foreign animal diseases, to promote sustainable global trade that encourages efficient production practices, and to ensure science-based food safety and marketing regulations of emerging food technologies like lab-grown proteins.
Nathan Phinney CCA President
We have a busy summer coming up with the Calgary Stampede, federal-provincial meetings in the Yukon and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) meetings in the U.S. Protecting our herds, expanding our markets and improving your bottom line are our goals in all CCA’s activities.
We have been working shoulder to shoulder with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to provide updates on the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) virus in the U.S. and the border testing requirements they have implemented at the end of April for lactating dairy cattle. At the time of writing this, there have been no beef cattle affected in the U.S. or Canada – but we all know how important biosecurity and safety measures are and our message to producers is to continue to be vigilant and to watch for signs and symptoms of the virus and practice preventative measures. CCA has biosecurity advice for producers on its website at cattle.ca.
On the environmental front, we want to congratulate our provincial participants in The Environmental Stewardship Awards. As we all know, beef cattle producers play a huge role in protecting and enhancing our environment.
Special congratulations to the Hyatt family at Circle H Farms from Devlin, Ontario, the Association of Manitoba Community Pastures, and John Duynisveld and his daughter Maria at Holdanca Farms in Nova Scotia.
We commend you and all other nominees for the work and effort you put into continuously striving to improve your existing stewardship practices, setting our industry up for a sustainable future. Other provincial winners will be announced soon with our national winner announced in August at the Canadian Beef Industry Conference.
On behalf of our CCA Board and staff, we wish you a healthy, successful, and smooth summer.
