Welcome to the Spirit of the North Annual Bull Sale on Monday, April 1, 2024, at the Spiritwood Stockyards, Spiritwood, Saskatchewan. This three-breed annual event has been the source of highquality sires for purebred breeders and the main supplier of value-added sires for the many repeat customers that we visit with each year. Spirit of the North offers Simental, Charolais and Angus... the three breeds that dominate the cattle market and are sought after stockers by every front row in the auction barns of the nation.

Randy and Carol, Werstroh Farms Ltd. are the Simmental section of the event and offer two-yearolds and yearlings. Their bull pens are powerful whether you are looking for Red, Black or Blaze... performance yielding sires that will add extra pounds at weaning with optimal birth weights, tons of hair and testicles. This year, Randy presents a new genetic sire group, out-cross genetics for many in addition to rugged sons of the proven bulls that have made their program so consistent in type. As a bonus, many of the lineup are homo polled.

Lionel from Casbar Farm is the Charolais division and comes to town with both yearlings and twos. Each year, Casbar adds new genetics through A.I. and their transplant program. The program is backed by consistent walking bulls... Old Fashioned, Power Play, Elvis, and Felix. The Casbar offering is packed full of performance and muscle.... we know what the demand for Char-cross calves is in both the auction barns and feedlots and it continues to become greater each week!

Clevelands Farm, John and Dallas are the Angus portion of this event and come to you with a rugged package of solid two-year-olds. Many of the bulls are A.I. sired by leading bulls in the industry using calving ease with performance as selection tools. THE PERCENTAGE CALVING CHART

1. An average cow of any breed should be able to calve 7% of her body weight.

2. Most Charolais and Simmental cows will weigh between 1400-1800 lb., expected calf weight to range from 98 to 126 lb.

3. Most Red Angus and Black Angus cows will weigh between 1200-1600 lb., expected calf weight range 84 to 112 lb.

4 Calving ease is more important than birth weight because a longer sided calf may calve easy, but the birth weight is higher.

(see 7% Calving Chart below)

BIRTH WEIGHT & CALVING EASE

University studies in Wyoming and data from Montana and Colorado lend credence to the following conclusion:

1. The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65%

2. The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf.

3. The bull has 30-40% influence on birth weight of his progeny.

4. Pelvic measurement and angle as well as the shape of the calf have 35-40% influence on calving ease.

5. Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the last days of gestation.

6. Weather and temperature the last 30 days affect the length of gestation.

7. Size and maturity of cow influence calving ease.

Well, here we go again. Welcome to the Annual Spirit of the North Bull Sale. These bull sales seem to be kind of like birthdays, they are coming more often than normal.

We want to send out a THANK YOU to all past bidders and buyers of all previous sales, without you there it would not be the same. There seems to be a lot of great optimism in the beef industry as prices continue to rise and all producers are finally getting paid for the work that goes into being a beef producer. I was just reading the other night in the Western Producer that 2024 is going to be the year for the cow calf people.

The bull pen is as strong as always and we are extremely proud of this set of bulls. Whether you’re looking for red, black or baldie, power bull or calving ease, we think we have the bull for you. The day that we purchased this Julian 13J bull from McIntosh’s was probably one of our happiest days in the Simmental business. He puts the white face on damn near all his calves, he calves easy (we have even used him on heifers) but still has very good weaning weights on his calves. I don’t think we have ever dealt with a herd sire that is so quiet and easy to work with, and from what we see, he is passing all these traits on to his offspring. Buy any one of these 13J sons and next year when you see his calves you will be as happy as we are.

This Absolute herd sire was purchased from the good people at Blushrose Simmentals at Unity. He was a solid dark red soggy bull that had a lot of things going for himself. His calves always seem to stand out in the pen. One of the best things about 806F was his daughter making abilities, they were some really good haired, good coloured and proved to be some of the most productive females on the farm.

We don’t know a whole bunch about this bull because he was rented to us when another bull couldn’t get the job done. One thing is for sure, we should have kept this guy. His calves are born easy, and after that all they do is grow. They are thick and hairy and the one thing we all like is they are very dark red. They seem to be the very easy keeping type of bulls and they will definitely add some hip to your calves.

Welcome to the Spirit of the North Annual Bull Sale 2024!

This year brought new additions to our family as Debbie and I welcomed two more grandchildren. I was also able to check a couple of things off my bucket list, as we attended a couple Toronto Blue Jays games, toured the Hockey Hall of Fame and visited Niagara Falls. We had a blast and would recommend them all if you have never been.

This fall also brought a very welcome surprise for us all, record-setting calf prices! Who would have thought we would be selling 750 lb steers for $3.60/lb. Finally, well deserved prices and recognition for our hard work.

Our lineup of this year’s bulls is a pen we are very proud to present and a bull to suit every program. Bulls with calving ease and performance driven are extremely important to us. This year we have included a few more Red Factor bulls and 5 embryo transplant yearling bulls that will please your eye. All bulls will be semen tested prior to the sale and will come with a veterinary certificate of authenticity. They will also be treated with Fusoguard for the prevention of foot rot.

I’m passionate about cattle and the industry and I’m always striving to produce excellence. We have an extensive embryo transplant program, flushing our best cows to new genetics and even purchasing embryos from other breeders. These are calving ease bulls out of LT Nationwide. This pedigree is a rare find as Nationwide semen is extinct. Their grand sire on the dam’s side is by, MVY Wonder 56W. He had a milk EPD of +36. These bulls will be awesome female producers. Their dam has raised some of our high selling bulls in previous sales, with one individual selling to Soderglen Ranches Ltd of Rockyview AB. Jeff Demarni remarked that 416B was the best cow he had seen the spring of 2020. 416B is an 1800lb plus, flawless individual with an awesome udder.

With the interest of cattleman in Tan and Red Factor bulls we acquired HRJ Jamestown 118J or as we know him as “Big Red” this big guy has surprised us on all accounts. All though we have not tested him, I believe him to be homo polled and homo red (non-dilutor). We have not had a horned animal nor an animal with broken color pattern or even a speck of white hair. To look at this fella, he is massive, masculine and has a super big hoof. What is amazing is his calving ease and all of his calves are under 100 lbs. He is the sire on most of the tan yearlings.

Most of our 2-year-olds are sired by our walking bulls. Bulls sired by CBF Old Fashion 911G were off of 1st calf heifers. We sold 911G in our 2021 sale to Saunders Charolais of Markdale ON, but we continue to use him through AI on our heifers. He is a calving ease sire and provides an outstanding hair coat and his daughters are proving to be great females.

Bulls sired by CBF Powerplay 11H are just that, bulls with a little more frame and performance to be used on cows He provides extra muscle and also a great hair coat.

We don’t have a picture of CBF Elvis 809F, he was a bull we kept for ourselves, out of our ET program. He is a performance bull with extra muscle and hair.

Welcome to our annual Spirit of the North Bull Sale. Thank you to our past bidders and buyers, and welcome to those who are new. As always, we only offer and sell two-year old bulls. We find the bulls are able to develop and mature better, so they are ready to work to their full capacity. These bulls can handle more females, plus maintain themselves better.

Clevelands Farm is very proud to introduce this group of bulls. You will notice that most of the bulls are from proven AI sires, representing calving ease and performance. We hope that you will find a bull that fits your breeding needs, be it in the heifer pasture or the cows. These bulls have been lightly backgrounded, then put back on grass to encourage further growth and development. They are on an TMR ration, consisting of cereal silage, brown oats, and a mineral package. All bulls will be double vaccinated with Fusogard to help prevent foot rot.

We encourage you to come and preview the bulls ahead of sale day at the ranch or at Spiritwood Stockyards prior to the sale. If you are unable to make it sale day, bidding can be done on DLMS or over the phone with Brian Jacobson or with T Bar C staff to help with your selection.

Every animal sells to the highest bidder and in cases of disputes, the auctioneer’s decision will be final. CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRATION

Each animal will carry papers issued by the Canadian Angus, Charolais & Simmental Associations unless otherwise specified. A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer for each animal after payment has been made.

PEDIGREE ESTIMATES

Pedigree Estimates (PE) are created on the projected mating of the animal’s sire and dam based on averages of the two, creating estimated values that do not hold the same accuracy of actual EPDs issued from the association and should be used as such.

HEALTH

All animals in the sale have met all necessary health requirements.

GUARANTEE

All persons attend the sale at their own risk. The seller, facility owner and sale manager assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents that occur. It is understood that T Bar C Cattle Co. (2013) Ltd. is acting only as a medium between buyer and seller and is not responsible for any obligations to collect or enforce collection of any monies between parties and any legal action that may, in extreme cases, be taken must be between buyer and seller. T Bar C Cattle Co. (2013) Ltd. assumes no responsibility of any credit extended by the seller to the buyer. The buyer must look to the seller for fulfillment of all guarantees and representations made hereunder.

PHONE, MAIL & WIRE BIDS

Bidders unable to attend the sale may phone, wire or mail their bids and instructions to the sale manager, auctioneer or special representatives. Bids must be received in sufficient time prior to the sale.

INSURANCE

We strongly recommend that insurance is purchased for full value.

ERRORS

All announcements at sale time, written or oral, supersede any written material in the catalogue.
