SASKATCHEWAN ANGUS RANCH EARNS CERTIFIED ANGUS BEEF AWARD By Lindsay Graber Runft

For Immediate Release The cattle business awards no trophies for participation. Nor does any rancher plan and work to be noticed for doing things right. Yet caring for land and livestock quietly switched a spotlight on JPM Farms. Jean-Paul and Marlene Monvoisin, with their son Colton and daughter Josee Monvoisin-Garner, operate the quality-focused seedstock Angus ranch in the rolling hills near Parkbeg, Saskatchewan. They lean into viable sustainability, with immense focus on the environment and a long-time partnership with Ducks Unlimited Canada. The perpetually progressive learners naturally work hard to improve their cow herd and grasslands.

“When we’re green and wet here, we have a lot of pothole wetlands, and great upland vegetation that supports nesting habitat for waterfowl,” says Ross MacDonald of Ducks Unlimited. “That’s also what allows ranchers in this area to thrive.” The ecosystem here depends on wildlife. The Monvoisins credit waterfowl, other birds and deer with helping increase sustainability in their native grassland pastures. “Ensuring that you have a resilient, highly functioning soil provides biodiversity across the landscape— and distribution of landscape dynamics needed for different wildlife species and cattle grazing resources,” MacDonald says.

“Our philosophy is to treat the land, the cattle and our family the best we can every day to make it a better day than the one before,” Marlene says. Outstanding results earned JPM Farms the Certified Angus Beef (CAB) 2023 Canadian Commitment to Excellence Award. The Monvoisin family was recognized at the CAB Annual Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, in September.

Partnering with Ducks Unlimited helps improve JPM Farms’ grasslands for environmental and ranching wins. Conservation and Cows Cattle are good for the grass. “I don’t think there’s another animal that could be as efficient in maintaining the landscape,” Jean Paul says.

Destination Ranchland

Management underpins the effect, as JPM Farms strictly limits grazing for sustainability.

Just 100 miles north of the Montana border, JPM Farms sits in the heart of the Missouri Coteau, a hilly plateau that parallels the river southeastward into the Dakotas.

Jean Paul Monvoisin cares for 300 Angus cows in the prairie pothole region of Saskatchewan, Canada along side his family.

The arid to semi-arid Coteau’s native grasses tolerate some drought, but all pastures run the risk of sudden declines in grass and water quality.

Todays Angus Advantag e

24

That’s why the family worked with the Farm and Ranch Water Infrastructure Program on a pipeline that carries water to remote pastures on conservation easements. The result helps distribute grazing and gives purpose to land otherwise unusable for ranching. Feet, Function and Selection Their cow herd has adapted greatly to the big hills and rocky setting since Jean-Paul’s grandfather brought registered black Angus to Saskatchewan in 1941. Cattle must walk across large summer pastures where structural correctness determines survival.

“It’s a huge part of sustainability,” Jean-Paul says. “We have to get paid for what we’re doing.” Incorporating embryo transfer and a robust data collection system, the Monvoisins are geared toward progress. They are also committed to education, both in explaining EPDs to customers and learning for themselves.

“You have to have good feet,” Jean-Paul says. “That’s the most important thing I’ve found.” The wide-open country says a cow must be maternal, Marlene adds, providing steady care and raising a quality calf. “The mother cow is the biggest way you’re going to be profitable,” she says. They rely on such cows to produce bulls for customers, as well as calves with superior carcasses for beef the Monvoisins market independently. “The biggest compliment I can get is to see my customers’ calf weaning weights go up a year or two after they start using our bulls,” Marlene says. She says the best way to improve a herd and profitability is to cull from the bottom and build the top end. They are doing it in their own herd using expected progeny differences (EPDs), and helping customers do likewise. With better bulls come higher weaning weights and greater carcass quality, all adding dollars. Todays Angus Advantag e

The family runs 130 registered Angus and 170 commercial Angus pairs across 6,000 acres.

25

The Goal, Not the End The family’s recipe comes down to careful consideration of Angus genetics, continuing education and serving customers as bull buyers or helping to market calves. “I feel ownership in the Certified Angus Beef brand,” Marlene says. “There’s immense pride in having Angus cattle in our herd and producing Angus for our customers, ourselves and the consumer.” But excellence? “I don’t think anybody can ever say they’re the best at anything. Excellence is a goal, not the end,” Marlene says. “It’s all the extra work you do to be successful or just make your own operation better.”

(from left) John Stika (CAB), Marlene, Colton, Paula, Josee and Jean Paul Monvoisin, Bruce Cobb (CAB)

At JPM Farms, it means approaching each day with the attitude that you will make things better than they were yesterday— for your cattle, the land and how you treat other people. Going the extra mile and working hard at what you love.

The Monvoisin’s work with Ducks Unlimited Canada to take care of the land, wildlife and their cattle through grazing management programs and water projects.

CERTIFIED ANGUS BEEF CELEBRATES 45TH YEAR WITH STRONG SALES More than 1.2 billion pounds sold, the third highest sales year for the brand. By Lindsay Graber Runft and Jessica Travis

It has been 45 years since Certified Angus Beef’s (CAB) first customer purchased a strip steak at Renzetti’s IGA grocery store. Since then, consumer demand for high-quality beef has grown, ultimately driving demand for premium Angus genetics. “The Certified Angus Beef brand was founded on a mission to improve the consumer’s beef eating experience and drive demand for Angus cattle,” says John Stika, president of CAB. Marking the third-highest sales year on record, the global beef brand sold 1.227 billion pounds across 52 countries during the 2023 fiscal year. While down 7 million pounds, or 0.6%, from total sales in 2022, this year marks the brand’s eighth year over a billion pounds sold. Additionally, March 2023 was the third highest sales month in the brand’s history at 112.3 million pounds. “It’s because of the community around this brand, their daily hard work, and intentionality in leveraging the value of the Certified Angus Beef ® brand that we’re celebrating yet another year of over 1 billion pounds sold,” Stika says. CAB Supply Increased Despite Lower Fed Cattle Numbers “Angus producers deserve a tremendous amount of credit for maintaining their focus on marbling and continuing to improve the quality of their cattle,” Stika says. While the total fed cattle supply declined by 3%, this year 5.82 million carcasses were certified for the brand, increasing CAB supply 0.5%. This resulted in a 36% acceptance rate after 16.16 million cattle were identified as eligible for the brand. Family farmers and ranchers’ commitment to supplying highquality cattle continues to be rewarded through grid premiums. As reported in March 2022, premiums paid by packers to producers for brand-qualifying cattle totaled $182 million annually or $3.5 million per week. Meeting Consumer Demand Consumers continue to demand high-quality beef offerings at the meat case and while dining out, both domestically and internationally. With 414.8 million pounds sold, foodservice sales are up 2.4% from 2022 and reached their second-best year to date. While diners enjoyed Certified Angus Beef ® at their favorite dining establishments, from Michelin star restaurants to acclaimed barbecue joints and beyond, they also purchased the trusted beef brand in the meat case. Retail stores recorded 521 million pounds sold in 2023, marking the fifth year of over 500 million pounds sold across retailers, though down 4.9% in total sales from last year.

Angus producers have diligently selected high-quality cattle that produce premium beef, allowing for 5.82 million carcasses to qualify for the Certified Angus Beef ® brand.

For Immediate Release

In fiscal year 2023, 1.227 billion pounds of Certified Angus Beef ® was sold in 52 countries, marking the third best sales year to date.

U.S. sales dipped slightly from last year, but international sales soared to 188 million pounds, an increase of 5.5%. The highest growth was recorded in China, Hong Kong, South Korea and Mexico. Looking across the marketplace, the steady increase in demand for labor and time-saving solutions led value-added products— items such as fully-cooked briskets, hamburger patties, marinated roasts, franks, flavored meatballs, etc.—to a new annual record. Up 9.8% from 2022, 44.7 million pounds were sold across retail and foodservice, both in U.S. and international markets. Certified Angus Beef ® Prime sales marked a new milestone with 41 million pounds sold, up 17.7% from last year. Given the current marketing conditions, these record sales are further indication that consumers are not backing down from quality. As Certified Angus Beef further embraced consumer choice, Certified Angus Beef ® Natural saw 4.4 million pounds sold, down 6.4% from 2022. “We are all connected through our shared commitment to quality, and to fulfill the growing demand that’s out there for the brand,” Stika says. “In the process, we’ll continue to engage the entire beef community in creating a more prosperous and sustainable future for everyone involved in this brand.”

KANSAS RANCHERS RECOGNIZED FOR SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS One family’s journey to the peak of premium beef production earns the CAB Sustainability Award for Wharton 3C Cattle. By Nicole Lane Erceg

For Immediate Release

The view of Wharton 3C Ranch, near Syracuse, Kansas, in the summer of 2023 is so green Shannon and Rusty Wharton might have better luck convincing people it is a slice of heaven rather than the harsh, drought-ridden environment locals know. In fact, a few years ago, there wasn’t a cow in these pastures, lack of rain left the soil unable to produce much more than dust. The commercial outfit is made up of about 600 head spread across more than 35,000 acres, most of that a Western Association of Fish and Wildlife conservation easement. A 1,000-head grow yard prepares calves for finishing. The Whartons have been managing it for various owners since 2005. The last time it changed hands in 2017, they made the numbers work, purchasing the cattle and a little land, leasing the rest. A mix of puzzle pieces built over time helped two firstgeneration cattle ranchers carve out their own place in the cattle business. Their resilience and success earned Wharton 3C Cattle the 2023 Certified Angus Beef (CAB) Sustainability Award.

(from left) John Stika (CAB), Shannon and Rusty Wharton, Bruce Cobb (CAB)

A Better Way Unburdened by tradition that sometimes saddles generational ranches, the Wharton’s mindset is business first. Follow the science and data in selection and management, then work to get better every day. “We have our goal towards quality, not only quality in the meat we produce, but also quality of the land,” Shannon says. Involved in retained ownership since the 1990s, the couple tracks everything from conception to carcass data. A recent load of cattle were 100% Certified Angus Beef®, including 92% Prime. They achieved 87% or higher CAB and Prime across all their 2021 fed cattle. Premiums on those cattle add some extra black ink to the bottom line. People and a wider vision drive them to build not only their section of the cattle business but the entire industry. “We all need each other,” Shannon explains. “Without the cow-calf producer, restaurants don’t have great beef to serve, without the packer, our product doesn’t get to those

Shannon and Rusty Wharton

38

restaurants and consumers don’t have access to it. And commercial producers need someone to feed and finish those cattle. So, it’s very important that we all work together and realize in the end, we’re all producing the same product.” Greater Involvement This thought process led Shannon to get involved in the U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (USRSB). “It’s such a neat organization where we can have the whole supply chain sit down together and say, okay, from the producer all the way to the retailer, we’re producing this beef. Let’s do it to the best of our ability. Let’s make sure we’re not impacting the environment negatively. Let’s ensure we’re taking care of the animals and our employees.” The USRSB framework aligns with the Whartons’ mindset on management.

“We have our goal towards quality, not only quality in the meat we produce, but also quality of the land,” Shannon Wharton says.

“We have to be sustainable to be in this business.” Rusty says. “If we don’t do the right thing with the grazing management plan, if we don’t take care of the cattle properly and if we fail to bring together our customer base, then we’re not going to be in business.”

“Being involved in the U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef has impacted how we communicate what we do, because we’ve been doing this for a long time and this is what we believe in,” Shannon says. “So, our communication about sustainability is improved by the Roundtable.”

Rusty admits he’s been one to store cattle or grazing data in his head or scribbles in a dashboard notebook. However, technology to sort and the discipline to keep records allow him to run their cattle operation like any other business. That recorded and analyzed data enables good decisions, workable drought plans and meeting the requirements of take 1/3, leave 2/3 when grazing the conservation easement.

Visionaries who were willing to learn, work hard and persevere, Wharton 3C cattle is building both their business and the cattle business for the future.

“It helps you stay focused when you need to make a move,” Rusty says. The most valuable takeaway for the couple’s USRSB involvement has been opening new avenues of communication. Shannon has firsthand experience in how simple management tools like Beef Quality Assurance certification and written grazing management plans can align values across the beef supply chain.

AGRIRECOVERY DETAILS

ANNOUNCED FOR SASKATCHEWAN. APPLICATIONS START NEXT WEEK. October 20, 2023 Regina, SK Today, Agriculture and Agri-Food (AAFC) Minister Lawrence MacAulay and Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister David Marit announced details of Saskatchewan’s AgriRecovery Program, now referred to as the 2023 Canada-Saskatchewan Feed Program. Starting next week, producers can begin to submit applications to the Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation (SCIC). “I’ve had the opportunity to meet with farmers and producers from across Western Canada and they’ve shared just how challenging this growing season has been for their operations,” said MacAulay. “With a federal investment of $219 million through AgriRecovery, we’re helping them recover so they can continue to feed Canada, and the world.” “The livestock sector is a significant contributor to our provincial economy,” Marit said. “It is important we are there for producers through the current challenges. The program will provide some financial relief to livestock producers, helping them to maintain the breeding herd by providing funding to address extraordinary costs caused by the drought.” This program covers 70 per cent of extraordinary costs related to feed and freight, incurred after May 1, 2023, through to the application deadline of March 1, 2024. Program funding will provide eligible producers an initial payment up to $150 per head to help maintain the breeding herd in the drought regions. Based on available funding, additional payments will be issued to program participants. Eligibility is area specific, guided by the Canadian Drought Monitor. Producers will need to submit their receipts or appropriate documents for the extraordinary expenses. Eligible extraordinary expenses include purchased feed, self-hauling or transportation costs for feed or breeding animals, and/or land rented for additional grazing acres or additional feed production. Eligible animal species include beef cattle and other grazing animals, limited to bison, elk, deer, sheep, goats and horses. This program is designed to help retain breeding stock. Breeding animals include females and males of the reproductive age of the species. A Saskatchewan Premises Identification (PID) is required to be eligible for the program. Online application form will be available at scic.ca. This application process assists producers to determine if they have extraordinary expenses on their operation, including an Extraordinary Cost Assessment. The submitted application needs to indicate the number of breeding animals on hand, as of August 21, 2023, intended to be kept until January 31, 2024. On August 18, Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Agriculture announced the province has already committed up to $70 million to assist impacted producers. Federal cost-share funding for Saskatchewan’s AgriRecovery

Program is up to $77 million. AgriRecovery is a federal-provincialterritorial disaster relief framework to help agricultural producers with the extraordinary costs associated with recovering from disaster situations. AgriRecovery initiatives are cost-shared on a 60:40 basis between the federal government and participating provinces or territories, as outlined under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP). This announcement is part of a larger disaster response totaling $365 million in federal-provincial cost-shared funding under the AgriRecovery Framework to help farmers and ranchers in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan with extraordinary costs due to this year’s extreme weather conditions. Producers already have access to a comprehensive suite of business risk management (BRM) programs that are the first line of defense for producers facing disasters, including AgriStability, AgriInsurance and AgriInvest. With joint funding from the federal government and provinces, these BRM programs provide protection against different types of income and production losses. The federal government also announced an initial list of designated regions in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba where Livestock Tax Deferral has been authorized for 2023 due to extreme weather conditions. “On behalf of Saskatchewan’s cattle industry, we thank the provincial and the federal governments for providing this much-needed funding for our producers who have been impacted by this drought,” Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association Chair Keith Day said. “We appreciate the provincial government’s recognition of the urgency of the situation, as was demonstrated through their funding announcement in August. While today’s announcement is later than we had hoped, it will be a help to many producers that have already and continue to incur extraordinary expenses to ensure the wellbeing of their herds.” “SARM appreciates this announcement,” Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities President Ray Orb said. “These measures are needed as farmers and ranchers are dealing with significant challenges in Saskatchewan, we are thankful for the contributions from both senior levels of government.”

“We greatly appreciate this much-needed provincial and federal support, as many producers continue to deal with consecutive years of drought,” Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association President Garner Deobald said. “Improved BRM programming will require highly-collaborative and forward-thinking industry-government teamwork-as ownership of risk is shared and response time is critical. Producers outside the eligibility areas are also hard-hit, so we are hoping there will be some flexibility for those operations in need too.” For more information, producers can contact: SCIC Phone:1-844-723-1211 Email: skfp@scic.ca scic.ca/2023-canada-saskatchewan-feed-program

QUALITY WINS, AGAIN

Consumers still expect beef to taste great, but now it should be convenient too. By Morgan Boecker, producer communications senior manager

For Immediate Release Even with more marbling than ever in today’s beef, the market still demands more of the best, said Sara Scott, vice president of foodservice for Certified Angus Beef. She spoke at the recent Feeding Quality Forum in Lincoln, Nebraska. “We don’t win at the meat case because of price,” she said. “We win because of taste.” Without ever owning beef that carries the brand’s logo, CAB sales marketing teams support its licensed partners that do. Through training, one-on-one discussions and focused empowerment, those partners gain confidence to talk about the brand to their customers. “When you are selling beef, it can be extremely intimidating,” Scott said. “There are a lot of cuts and it’s typically one of the most expensive items they’re selling.” The pressure is on, especially right now as market dynamics shift and beef supplies tighten. Sharing supply dynamics ensures the thousands of sales reps selling CAB are confident even as prices go up. “We get to go out and get those people fired up and excited about selling Certified Angus Beef ® and selling it at a premium to other products,” Scott said. Creating an Easy Button Navigating price sensitivity means highlighting the added value CAB brings to the table. Cattle and beef markets may careen up and down, but consumers bring stability by choosing premium beef again as they venture back to restaurants post-COVID. That’s reassuring, but labor and supply challenges still join worries over keeping menus stocked and creating growth for prepared and packaged beef. Those further-processed items include meatballs, flavored patties, marinated cuts, pot roast or other pre-cooked items with ingredients added, Scott explained. “Restaurants have really gravitated to these items because of labor. We like to say that prepared and packaged items always show up for work. They’re never late and they’re never cranky,” she said. “The same is true at the meat case. A busy mom can grab these pre-cooked items and prepare dinner for her family.” These convenience items rarely come from traditional, highly sought-after cuts, but rather from the round or thin meats. That adds more value to the entire beef carcass. “It makes it that much more beneficial to a producer to raise cattle that qualify for the Certified Angus Beef ® brand, because it’s not just the ribeyes that are in high demand, we need the entire carcass,” she said.

Prepared and packaged beef items may include meatballs, flavored patties, marinated cuts, pot roast or other pre-cooked items with ingredients added. Not only should these items be easy, but also taste great. “If you’re a restaurant or a retail store in that same town, you have to offer something of greater quality and better value than that gas station,” she added. Instead of just topping off the tank and grabbing a bag of candy and chips, they’re offering a pizza you can take home for dinner. It’s an effort to capture more consumer dollars, and challenging restaurants to step up their game and offer something of higher quality and value, Scott said. Prime Opportunities CAB’s role is to find opportunities for premium beef, but also to meet consumers where they are. They continue to vote with their pocketbooks for high-quality beef. As conversations around Prime grow, so do questions about availability. “Is it available? Can I get my hands on it?” Scott said those are the leading questions. “So there is absolutely the demand to continue to produce more and more Prime.” Lacking a steady supply of CAB Prime sometimes brings a need for regular communication with packer partners and tuned-in buying strategies. Without a doubt, CAB partners express demand and eagerness to buy. “We would love for there to be more Prime beef on the market,” Scott said. “But that’s in the hands of everyone in this room.”

Convenient Shifts Easy and timesaving are one thing, but expectations are also for beef to taste great. Take a look at your convenience store and gas station at lunch. It’s probably bustling, Scott said. Instead of keeping people at the pumps, these stores are pulling them inside with better and more food options.

MARKET UPDATE Federally inspected cattle slaughter last week was 7,000 head smaller than the week prior. This slaughter reduction aligns with the pace packers were targeting for the period. It’s normalized after two weeks of very low and high head counts due to the Labor Day week earlier this month. The north to south price differential narrowed again last week as a potential signal that currentness in fed cattle supplies is leveling up between the major trade regions. Southern feedyards traded for $183/cwt., while Nebraska/ Iowa feedyards traded between $184 and $186/cwt. Last Week Weekly Slaughter Fed Steer Price Steer Carcass Wt. CAB Cutout Choice Cutout Select Cutout CH/SE Spread CAB/CH Spread

625K 184.13 917 314.31 297.24 274.50 22.74 17.07

Week Prior 632K 183.93 908 317.76 299.65 275.36 24.29 18.11

Year Ago 671K 144.15 914 269.13 249.39 227.27 22.12 19.74

While the market average trading range has narrowed from the recently historically wide range, the total market average in the six-state region has priced in a fairly tight range in the low to middle $180’s since the middle of June. The comprehensive cutout traded in a range from $325/cwt. to $301/cwt. in the same period. Carcass cutout values were lower again last week with some narrowing of the price spreads as well. Expect cutout values to reach their seasonal lows by the second week of October before catching fourth quarter demand traction, rallying in early November. Price declines on chuck cuts enticed buyers last week as retail interest tends to increase for these items looking ahead to October and November. Ribeye prices were slightly higher last week as buyers continue to store inventory in the “near frozen” state to achieve needed supplies for the holidays. Spot market ribeye prices represent a small available supply for this reason and the price pattern is strongly higher this year compared to the past two years. Other noted trends we’ve been tracking continue on a firm pattern in latest data. Seasonally lower values on strips and shortloins are on the expected pace. As well, sharply higher 90% lean trimmings prices are holding the alternative round cuts from fed cattle on a higher plane as we’ve recently pointed out.

CARCASS WEIGHTS SURGE, CHOICE GRADE SETBACK In the past 10 years steer carcass weights reached their annual lows in the third week of May and touched their heaviest annual mark in the second and third full weeks in November. Since the COVID interruptions in 2020, the spring lows have migrated into the month of June. The magnitude of change in steer carcass weights from the spring-low to the fall-high in each of the past five years has been relatively close, except for 2019. The August 9, 2019 fire at Tyson’s Holcomb, Kansas plant set industry slaughter efficiency back, generating heavier than normal weights into the fall, aggregating a 70 lb. weight swing from the spring low to the November high. The second largest weight swing in the series was a 58 lb. seasonal increase in 2018 with the remaining years posting no less than a 45 lb. change. The first four months of 2023 saw average steer weights fall 15 lb. short of a year ago due to exceptionally poor winterfeeding conditions. Since early May steer weights have adjusted higher and have since averaged just 1 lb. heavier than in 2022. Major contributors are slower slaughter throughput and less current finished cattle supplies in the south. Latest data for the week of September 3 shows steer carcass weights surged 9 lb. to average 917 lb. each. This is a large jump given that weights had only moved up 13 lb. total in the five previous weeks. It’s important to factor carcass weight changes to understand production tonnage as we discuss weekly head counts and throughput. The single-week 9 lb. per head increase equates to multiple semi-loads of boxed beef production.

Heavier carcasses typically coincide with richer marbling and higher quality grades. But seasonal grade trends simply push quality lower this time of year as USDA’s grading report for the September 11 week shows an abrupt leg

down in percent USDA Choice. The one percentage point single-week drop placed the Choice share at 70.3% of steer and heifer carcasses. While this may seem like a small shift, it’s truly sizeable since the annual Choice percentage has trended within just a five-point range annually in recent years.

Latest data for the national Prime grade shows the current 8.27% holding a bit higher than the 7.6% for the same week last year. Combined Choice and Prime grade shares are currently even with their position a year ago today, which was the lowest quality grade performance week of the year. Surprisingly, the Premium Choice branded share of the Choice grade appears relatively unaffected. The category even shifted fractionally higher amidst the Choice downturn to average 30.9% of the Choice product total. Certified Angus Beef is the largest component of the Premium Choice branded offering. The brand’s latest carcass acceptance rate near 32% is 1.5 points higher than a year ago as that figure seeks to mark the fall low very soon.
