We decided it was time to change our life path, and as of June 15, 2023, we have privately had a complete dispersal of our cowherd. We cherish our friends and loyal customers and hope these friendships flourish in the future! This decision is not a retirement, simply a change. We look forward to staying up-to-date with all the breed and cattle industry excitement.

A family we deeply admire, Murray Ranches, George and Suntana Murray, and family of Consort, AB, purchased our complete mature cowherd. These genetics are not going far from home. The opportunity to work with the Murray’s to source BAR-E-L genetics as they evolve is still close to your doorstep! You will find George and Suntana engaging to visit and equally reputable to do business with!

Reputation breeders in South Dakota, Lindskov’s LT Ranch, were pivotal in our dispersal. Bryce, Todd, and their families purchased current-year heifer and bull calves and our bred heifers. In addition, our herdsire, Brooking National 0144, is heading to South Dakota. BAR-E-L genetics will play a significant role in an expanding Angus program for Lindskov’s.

We wish these families every success with BAR-E-L genetics! We look forward to following their progress!

On the heels of a record Spring Bull Sale season, most of us are looking to the sky for some badly needed moisture to supplement grazing grounds and crops that are in head waiting to fill. Every time there is excessive rainfall causing local flooding or excessive drought, the political pundits, and climatologists cry “climate change”. It’s not difficult to get a belly full of these experts who sit in their air-conditioned offices and build make believe theories. Many of our forefathers lived through the “dirty thirties” and those who survived built this nation over the past nine decades. Those survivors didn’t blame climate change … only that good old girl,” Mother Nature.”

Consider the enormous sums of money given or promised by our flamboyant Prime Minister as he flies around the world to meetings concerning climate change while others in this country struggle to survive. We must remember that along with the Prime Minister is his entourage of secretaries, security and staff riding in their fuel consuming jet planes … and who pays for this … you the taxpayer! The sad state to all this economic mess is that our politicians cannot seem to envision the shortage of food to feed

Over the past several issues, Today’s Angus Advantage reported the shortage of beef cow inventory and the rising market…the market is strong so buckle up… it’s going to get even better. The USDA Cattle Inventory as of July 1, 2023, reported that beef cattle dropped 3%, while dairy was unchanged, Both the cattle on feed and the calf crop was down 2%. Canadian inventories follow the US which is down 2.5%. We are approaching the lowest level since 1990. With out rain and high kill-cow prices, inventory numbers will plummet sharply and heifer placement in the feed yards will increase. To add to the fury, exports have been very strong.

BRAD GILCHRIST ENGAGES IN PREMIERE EDUCATION AT BEEF LEADERS INSTITUTE (BLI)

Young Angus enthusiasts gather for a week of producer education and development

Brad Gilchrist, Lucknow, Ontario, Canada, attended the 2023 Beef Leaders Institute (BLI) June 13-17. The annual event is hosted by the American Angus Association and funded by the Angus Foundation and Certified Angus Beef® brand (CAB®). BLI provides Association members the opportunity to experience the beef value chain from pasture to plate.

“It’s truly a privilege to welcome a new Beef Leaders Institute class each year,” said Mark McCully, Association CEO. “This unique experience fosters growth for attendees and provides an opportunity to connect with their fellow breeders.”

Participants began the week at the American Angus Association in Saint Joseph, Missouri. While at the breed’s headquarters, attendees met with staff to learn about the many departments and programs housed within the Association. Several Association employees offered insights, including Mark McCully; Kelli Retallick-Riley, Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) president; and Clay Zwilling, Angus MediaSM president.

Attendees then hit the road, departing from Saint Joseph to further explore the production and processing sectors of the beef industry. They toured Tyson Fresh Meats in Dakota City, Nebraska, and Weborg Feedyards in Pender, Nebraska.

For the next leg of the trip, attendees traveled to Ohio to continue studying the beef value chain. While visiting Buckhead Toledo, Northwood, Ohio, participants experienced the preparation of value-added CAB® products. They explored the impact of genetics in the beef industry at STgenetics, Tiffin, Ohio. The final days of the experience were spent in The Culinary Center at the CAB® brand’s headquarters in Wooster, Ohio. From a “Taste the Difference,” steak tasting to a hands-on beef fabrication demonstration in the meat lab, participants explored

the specifications behind putting a CAB® steak on the dinner table. Their newly-gained knowledge was even put to the test as they prepared their own steaks with the assistance of world-class chef, Venoy Roggers, III.

During a week fully immersing themselves in the industry, the BLI class realized how the cattle they raise influence the industry well beyond their pastures.

“We’re always selling bulls and you see the commercial people, but you don’t really see what happens to the beef after it leaves,” said Trevor Hinkle, an attendee from Nevada, Missouri. “It’s just a really interesting process to see what happens after it gets to the packer, leaves the packer, and how there’s value made along the whole chain, and how many people are really working to do that. — it’s a really eye-opening experience.”

Hinkle said he’s eager to take what he learned home and share it with his operation’s customers. He expressed his gratitude for the knowledge, perspective and new friendships gained throughout the week.

“We are proud to support educational opportunities like Beef Leaders Institute for our members,” said Jaclyn Boester, Angus Foundation executive director. “Providing experiences that prepare our breeders for success is a vital part of the Foundation’s mission to ensure a bright future for the breed.”

Providing continued education for the Angus membership is a priority for the Association. BLI is designed to equip members ages 25 to 45 with the resources to understand all segments of the beef industry. FINE TUNING OF HERD HEALTH & MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS

They say the only constant is change. We know in the cattle business if we stop improving and accept the status quo we will get behind. I have decided to put together a bunch of ideas of changes that are now happening in the cattle industry. As I travel across the country and meet with producer groups and veterinarians many different production tips come to mind. Hopefully some may be applicable to your operation and help you improve the performance and efficiencies of your farming or ranching operation. Have discussions with your veterinarian, nutritionist or fellow cattle producer on whether these points may be applicable to your operation. Many of these changes can improve performance even though your Simmental herd may already be performing very well. Looking at the one or two things that may improve this even in a minor way may be worth it.

Vaccinology is making great strides with new intranasal technologies and broader vaccines to cover more diseases in one shot. There are newer intranasal cannulas and even guns now on the market that are easy to use and really get a good application of the vaccine well up into the nostril. Summer is an ideal time to review if new products are to be added. Remember vaccines help prevent disease which is far better than treating and can hopefully cut down our antibiotic usage. We don’t want to pass off BVD persistently infected calves to the feeding sector so there is heavy reliance on the cow calf sector to wean vaccinated calves. Even vaccines for footrot are becoming more commonplace especially on your herd bulls. Clostridial disease is always present but remember specific diseases such as tetanus or redwater only come in certain clostridial vaccines. We see more and more cases of clostridial disease in spite of there being very good vaccines available that are inexpensive. Work with your herd veterinarian to make sure timing is right on the vaccines and handle and administer them properly. Every time you process the thought should enter your mind, what vaccines do I need and is there anything new that will give my cattle more comprehensive coverage and hopefully less clinical disease. In Canada there have just been two mycoplasma vaccines enter the market. They will be more of a feedlot vaccine but are another tool if you get mycoplasma respiratory disease.

Pain control or NSAIDs are often mentioned in the beef codes of practice for painful procedures such as castration or dehorning. With your purebred herds only the castration of the older bulls that don’t make the grade are where NSAIDs are really needed. In veterinary medicine most times we work on sick cattle that have a fever or we perform surgery then one of the NSAIds may be indicated. Your veterinarian now has a wide range of these NSAIds to choose from and lameness is another common usage. They even come in convenient methods of application such as orally or pour on as well as the traditional injectable ones. Some have very short slaughter withdrawals others are longer. They make the cattle keep their appetites and recover quicker so in addition to being the right thing they are economically very justified.

They are all prescription drugs but your veterinarian should be up to date on which ones to use in which situations for you. The greatest observation I have had is how quick recovery from; claw amputations, castrations, lameness etc are when NSAIDs are used in a timely manner. The public is also talking about painkillers from an animal welfare perspective so it simply is becoming the right thing to do.

With parasite control monitoring of herds with fecals for internal parasites has become commonplace and many strategies including strategic deworming at pasture is keeping producers and their veterinarians cognizant of different ways to deworm knowing that a certain level of parasites reduces production and leads to greater health problems especially in calves and yearlings. More products are available for lice and fly control and some even have some mosquito control which additionally helps production on grass. The critical thing is timing of application and switching products if resistance by the horn flies starts to become a problem.

When purchasing your breeding bulls (this applies to purebred breeders as well) carefully examine all the information such as semen forms, EPDs and any genetic information. They are half the genetics in your herd unless your AI’ing and warrant special attention depending if you want bulls of calving ease performance or carcass characteristics.

Many breeders now prevaccinate with even footrot and the health status and vaccination history should be indicated in the catalogue.

We need as an industry to do more testing and get more information on the antibiotic sensitivity so we can all make more informed decisions on antibiotic usage. If for instance you have lost some calves to pneumonia talk to your herd veterinarian about doing both a culture when he/she does a postmortem plus a sensitivity so best to predict which antibiotic will work the best. This again will help monitor what resistant organisms are out there plus success at treatment will be optimized. It also tells you what type of pneumonia you have.

There are times when blood samples may be needed for regulatory or disease testing, genetic testing or checking for macrominerals such as calcium also fecal samples in case conditions like Johne’s are suspected. These are sampling techniques breeders can be trained in. Even if working with your veterinarian a series of pictures or better yet a video tied in with some clinical parameters may help facilitate tele-vetmedicine. There are some veterinarians doing this with their clients. There may be a fee or it is tied in with a herd health program. Either way this may work well on individual clinical cases and of course from there is there any preventative program to introduce to the rest of the herd. I hope summer grazing is going well and the rains are starting to bring on the grass.

LIGHTER CARCASS WEIGHTS & SHRINKING SUPPLY

The CAB Insider Quarterly is a short video from Paul Dykstra, Certified Angus Beef (CAB) director of supply management and analysis, talking about the trends affecting the high-quality beef and cattle markets.

Now, we’re well into the second quarter of 2023, but backing up to the first of the year, there have been two overriding trends in the fed cattle supply. The first of which has been those fewer headcounts that we’ve seen harvested on a weekly basis, down about 2.7% year to date as well.

Carcass weights have shown the effects of winter weather as seen across the northern tier of the cattle feeding region. That has brought carcass weights to about 15 to 20 lbs. under a year ago for the same time period. These two factors combined have reduced fed cattle supplies so far in 2023 by about 5%. Now, those dramatically lower carcass weights have had some impact on quality grade, but we’ve been impressed at how well quality grades have held up under the pressure of these lighter weights.

Later into the spring, we’ve seen more, lesser-finished cattle being harvested. At the same time, the Prime quality grade has shown some effects and has been lower since last fall than we’d like to see as demand for Prime beef has been exceptional the last few years. Even so, the USDA Prime percentage has faltered by one to even two percentage points compared to a year ago. In total, that’s affected total Prime volume by about 10% of tonnage.

The Choice quality grade has fared much better, capturing a greater proportion of carcasses –some of those just narrowly missed Prime. And as a result, the USDA Choice grade has captured a record large proportion of those fed steer and heifer carcasses this season.

Premium Choice quality is essential to the Certified Angus Beef ® brand tradition label, which has benefited from richly graded carcasses that were just below Prime. In total, we’ve captured more than 40% of those Angus-eligible cattle into the Certified Angus Beef ® brand several weeks since the first of the year and consequently have touched those recordhigh acceptance rates during that same period. As we moved into spring, we’ve seen the shorter cattle supplies and higher beef demand push fed cattle and cutout values to record levels.

As we move forward, we expect the lower quality grades in May and lighter carcass weights combined with shorter fed cattle supplies to continue to drive premiums into the high-quality cattle and beef markets for the next number of weeks.

CANADIAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION CONVENTION HIGHLIGHTS

JUNE 12, 2023: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Rocky View County, AB—More than 200 Angus enthusiasts gathered in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan June 8 through 10 for the Canadian Angus Association National Convention and Annual General Meeting. Highlights include:

• At the Convention banquet, the Canadian Angus Hall of Fame launched. The first inductee is former CAA staff member Brian Good.

• The Certified Angus Beef Canadian Commitment to Excellence award was presented to JP and Marlene Monvoisin and family of Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan at the Convention banquet.

• At the president’s reception on Thursday evening, a partnership between the Canadian Angus Association and Vanessa Vineyard of the Similkameen Valley, BC was announced. Attendees sampled Genuine Angus, the exclusive red wine that is available only to the Canadian Angus Association.

• Tom deWaal of Prince George, BC was elevated from the position of President Elect to President. Graham MacLean of Watford, ON moved into the Past President position, and Ronnie Ford of Oyster Bed, PEI was chosen as President Elect. In addition, the Board welcomed Darren Ippolito of Kisbey, SK who replaces retiring director Sheldon Kyle of Redvers, SK.

• CEO Myles Immerkar presented the 2022 audited financial statements at the AGM, not only reporting a strong financial year but also that the association has achieved the investment reserve fund target set in 2013.

• At the Convention banquet, five awards were presented for 50 years of continuous CAA membership and three awards were presented for 75 continuous years of CAA membership.

The 117th Canadian Angus Association Annual General Meeting was held Saturday. In the face of continued challenges of rising costs due to inflation, market downturn with a decreasing commercial cow herd and our ultimate goal to continue to keep membership fees in check, CEO Myles Immerkar was

able to report another positive year in 2022. Our long-term financial stability remains an ultimate priority and the CAA financial health is the strongest it has been in history.

Memberships continue to increase at an all-time high as for the third consecutive year, we experienced a strong increase in CAA memberships despite challenges across the industry. Canadian Angus membership surpassed 2,600 members in 2022, increasing from 2,500 members in 2021 and 2,200 members in 2020.

CAA created an investment reserve account in 2013 designed to support CAA operations in the event of an industry disaster. Three percent of core revenue from registrations, transfers and memberships has been invested each year. The goal was to reach $675,000 by 2025 and that target amount was reached in 2022.

CEO Myles Immerkar updated the membership that the board is exploring all of CAA’s investments and doing due diligence in a number of areas that includes the investment in Angus Central. Due to changes in technology, efficiencies and work environment, the current office structure is not fully utilized as it has once been. The CAA will go through the process of exploring market valuation of our property, market interest and review the business case of remaining at Angus Central or the sale of our current property when the appropriate information is available for the board to decide on the best investment of membership dollars.

Canadian Angus Hall of Fame

Former staff member Brian Good was the first inductee in the Canadian Angus Hall of Fame. Brian retired from CAA in 2021 after nearly 21 years of service. He was the face of the CAA across Canada at auction marts, sales, events and in the pastures across Canada, supporting auction markets, promoting the Angus breed and working with the commercial cattle industry. Brian passed away in August 2022 and his wife Lynanne and his children Tracy and Kevin attended the banquet to accept the award.

The Canadian Angus Association announced the creation of our hall of fame in autumn 2022. Designed to recognize members who have made significant contributions to the Angus breed in Canada, the Canadian Angus Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have invested time, energy and resources promoting the Angus breed in Canada; who have served as a role model and encouraged youth to participate in Angus activities; who have invested in genetics and/or research to improve the breed; who have in any way improved the position of the Angus breed in Canada and left a legacy.

In partnership with Vanessa Wineries of the Similkameen Valley, BC, worldrenowned master winemaker Howard Soon crafted the perfect wine to be paired with Angus beef. Soon has been on the leading edge of winemaking innovation for more than three decades, one of the first people to be named to the Order of Canada for everything he has accomplished and contributed to the wine industry. Genuine Angus is a 2018 Meritage blend consisting of 45% Cabernet Franc, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot.

Delegates who attended the president’s reception were the first to sample the wine and the first bottles were available for purchase at the Building the Legacy fundraiser auction. Genuine Angus wine will be available at select Angus events this year, but it is not available for retail sale at the present time.

About the Directors

deWaal of Prince George, BC was raised on a dairy farm. He attended the Reich World Wide College of Auctioneering in Mason City, Iowa and started his auctioneering career selling livestock. In 2003 he purchased his first registered Angus cattle which has grown into today’s Harvest Angus herd consisting of 150 mother cows. Tom and his wife Carolyn also run Central Interior Auctions Ltd.

Ford farms with his father, Glen Ford, on Wheatley River Farm in Wheatley River, PEI. Ronnie, Glen, nephew Kyle Younker and son Logan have a herd of 35 Black and Red Angus influenced females. Ford is a past president of the Maritime Angus Association and has been involved in the Maritime Angus Association for 20 years. Each summer he exhibits his Angus cattle at different livestock shows in the Maritimes. Ford also works as the accountant at Phillips Agri Services in Charlottetown.

Ippolito lives near Kisbey in southeast Saskatchewan where he runs Moose Creek Red Angus with his partner Kylie and their three children, Kord, Etta and Ray-Lynn and his parents Glenn and Donna. They have a registered herd, large commercial cow/calf and yearling operation as well as a small feedlot.

Kyle operates Kenray Ranch near Redvers, SK with his family. They breed 250 head of Red Angus and Red Angus influenced females annually. Kyle also owns and operates an on-farm business, Kyle Farm & Ranch Supply that was founded in the spring of 2015. In addition, he has served on the local Coop board of directors for two terms, sat on the Canadian Western Agribition

Stock Exchange Committee and has served as a director and as president of the Saskatchewan Angus Association.

McLean and his brother Murray operate a purebred Angus cow herd, Melmac Angus Farms near Melbourne, Ontario with 40 cows. Their father Ron started the herd in 1974. They also grow corn and soybeans. McLean has served as president of the Melbourne Fair Board, Lambton County 4-H Association, Watford Optimist Club, Watford Silver Stick Hockey Tournament, Western Ontario Angus Association and Ontario Angus Association.

Leavitt’s Black Angus Beef, Ontario Beef producer takes the lead in promoting recycling of ag plastic

As Leavitt came up with the design for the PacIt compactor, he created a company — U-Pac Agri Service to help market the compactor and promote the idea of recycling agriculture plastic to other producers. You can learn more about the company and compactor on the U-Pac AgriService Facebook page.

“It is just a small operation that is based in a shop here on the farm,” says Leavitt referring to U-Pac AgriServices.

“It certainly isn’t a high profit operation. It is more like a hobby that got out of control.”

Lynn Leavitt can go to bed each night with relative peace of mind knowing he is doing his part to help farmers properly manage an agricultural by-product — long considered a nuisance — while at the same time benefiting the environment.

Leavitt, who runs a commercial Black Angus beef operation in Eastern Ontario near the community of East Lake, about 40 km south of Belleville, over the past few years has developed a system for collecting, compacting and wrapping agricultural plastics — bale wrap, silage bags and plastic twine — so these materials can be neatly and economically trucked to a plastic recycler.

Farmers aren’t getting paid for recycling this used plastic, but Leavitt says there is considerable value in knowing this material is being repurposed rather than being burned (which is illegal) or buried in a landfill.

“This product — agricultural plastic — is one tool we have available that actually makes it possible to cheat nature,” says Leavitt.

“We don’t want to lose the option to use it. It is a product that allows us to put up winter feed supplies without spoilage — some people call it hay-in-a-day. It is a great tool. But then what do you do with all the used plastic? There is a lot of it, and if it is not handled properly, we run the risk of not being able to use it. So, it is important that all sectors of the agriculture industry work together to make sure it is recycled properly.”

In 2016, after feeling guilt and frustration that there were no proper recycling systems available for the agricultural plastic used on his farm, Leavitt designed and built what was later to be called the Pac-It compactor. It is a relatively low cost but effective way to handle used plastic so it can be recycled.

His efforts in developing the Pac-It compactor and promoting agriculture plastic recycling over the years, earned him recognition as the Beef Farmers of Ontario’s 2023 nominee for The Environmental Stewardship Award (TESA).

The compactor is a slated, wooden “crib” with an open top and bottom that fits on a conventional wooden pallet. The crib is roughly 54” x 50” by 67” tall.

The idea is to put clean used plastic wrap — low density polyethylene plastic — inside the crib, compress it with a plunger that attaches to the frontend loader of the tractor, keep adding material and compacting it inside the crib until it is full. The bundle

“One of the main objectives is to show other farmers there is a better way to handle this used plastic. I recall one guy who said he had this “mountain” of scrap plastic. We put it into the Pac-It compactor and got it tied into a bundle and then somehow that mountain of plastic wasn’t so much of a problem anymore.”

U-Pac AgriService sells the pre-built Pac-It compactor. The cost is $750 which covers $600 in materials and $150 in labour to cut the wood and assemble. Shipping is extra. And shipping a unit any distance can be expensive. So as an alternative U-Pac AgriService also sells the blueprints so farmers can build their own. It is not a patented design, but it has been proven to work well. U-Pac AgriService has sold about 300 of the pre-built cribs. And blueprints which cost between $20 and $30 have been sold to producers in Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.

Leavitt says his main interest is to raise awareness among producers that there are better options for handling agricultural plastic.

As the fourth generation operating the family farm, Leavitt runs a herd of about 100 head of commercial Black Angus cows. He keeps all his own calves for backgrounding and finishing. He works with a local abattoir to have roughly 18- month old finished animals processed. He supplies some meat products to local restaurants and there are two other local retailers who carry Leavitt Black Angus Beef meat products.

“We started finishing cattle and direct marketing meat back when BSE hit,” says Leavitt.

“We have worked with the same abattoir and have had some different markets over the years, but we have many repeat customers who keep coming back for our 21-day dry aged meat products. We need to maintain a flow of finished cattle throughout the year, so we are feeding cattle year round.”

The Prince Edward County farming operation includes 200 acres of deeded land, and another 300 acres of rented land. As well as they purchase 100 acres of standing hay each year. Of all the acres, about 175 acres are used for grazing cows and calves. Stored feed for the cattle includes dry hay, baleage (high moisture hay bales that are wrapped in 500 foot-long plastic tubes), corn silage stored in 10 foot diameter, 200 foot long silage bags as well as grain corn.

That plastic obviously is a key part in storing the feed supply for the year, “but there was no practical way to deal with the used material,” says Leavitt. He connected with a local plastic manufacturing company in Belleville and while they weren’t involved in recycling, it led Leavitt to connect with a recycling operation in London, ON. They were willing to take clean agricultural plastic collected from within a three-hour driving radius of their plant, if it could be assembled and transported economically. (And clean doesn’t mean the plastic needs to be washed. Once it is removed from the bale or the silage bag is empty, the plastic needs to dry, so any loose particles of forage will fall off. As long as it is dry it can be compacted.)

That led Leavitt to design the Pac-It compactor as way to bundle the plastic in a neat, dense package that could be economically trucked. Each bundle from the compactor weighs about 1,000 pounds. As other farmers in the Quinte Region got involved they too began to bundle agricultural plastic.

The farmers bring their bundled plastic to the Leavitt farm. When there are enough bundles to warrant a load to the recycler, Leavitt brings the bundles to the warehouse of a local agricultural plastic retailer, where they are loaded onto the recycler’s trailer.

“A 53-foot trailer can carry about 45,000 pounds which represents about 45 bundles of plastic,” says Leavitt.

“Each bundle fits on a pallet. When the truck arrives, we have volunteers helping out and it takes about an hour to get the truck loaded and then it is on its way.”

Over the years, Leavitt says the plastic recycling system to date has sent about 225,000 pounds of plastic to the recycling plant, and of that about 30,000 pounds has come from the Leavitt farm.

He is always interested in getting the recycling message out to other producers. He has made presentations at several events including the London Farm Show, Ontario Forage Council, Beef Farmers of Ontario and Peterborough Soil and Crop Association.

He has also been involved with and received support from CleanFARMS, a not-for-profit industry stewardship organization led by the plant science industry. CleanFARMS is committed to environmental responsibility through the proper management of agricultural waste products such as empty agricultural pesticide and fertilizer containers, grain bags, seed and pesticide bags and other ag plastics.

“In order to be able to recycle and repurpose plastics in a cost-effective and efficient manner, farmers, local municipalities, other levels of government, and industry players must work together to set up a recycling system on a local or regional basis,” says Leavitt. “This can be a challenge, since farmers tend to be naturally independent, so it will require a change in thinking. They need to understand it only takes a small investment of their time and resources to handle plastics correctly.

“It is great to see this plastic being recycled and repurposed into other plastic products, but I believe where the idea will really gain traction is when the used plastic is converted to biofuel, and that can be done,” he says.

“Then we will have a system that goes full circle. The used plastic is made into biofuel, the biofuel is used to power the farm tractor that is putting up feed into plastic bags and tubes, and then that used plastic will be used again to produce more biofuel. It will be one more way to reduce the carbon footprint of agriculture.”

MARKET UPDATE

Last week’s cash fed cattle trade brought about an unexpected uptick in prices as Nebraska and Cornbelt feedlots captured values $2 to $4/cwt. higher, averaging $180 to $184/cwt. The wide price spread remains, contrasting the northern to southern regions with Texas and Kansas live cash trade occurring at $170 to $171/cwt. That represents roughly a $1/cwt. Weekly advance.

Carcass weights continue their seasonal decline toward the spring lows but latest weight data shows a trend shift. Starting at the first of the year, weights had trended primarily in a range of 15 to 20 lb. lighter than a year ago due to extreme weather conditions and a current fed cattle supply. Yet carcass weights declined more rapidly in the second quarter of 2022 in contrast to this year’s more marked decline in the first quarter, which has given way to smaller downward moves in the second quarter.

Average steer weights actually moved up four pounds in the first week of May before dropping four pounds in the subsequent week. The slowing trend suggests a potential earlier realization of the year’s lightest carcass weights versus the mid-June timeframe marked in the past two years. Industry average carcass marbling achievement will be assisted in the upfront weeks if this shift occurs.

softer Choice/Select price spread in line with that of a year ago. The CAB premium to Choice firmed up fractionally to average $12.66/cwt., placing it almost $2/cwt. lower than a year ago.

A relatively strong quality grade mix, considering the time of year, plus recent upticks in weekly fed cattle slaughter is underpinning production volume in the commodity Choice and Premium Choice brands certified into branded programs. This has CAB traditional carcass counts in the 121,000 per week average for the past four weeks versus 119,000 for that period a year ago. Lighter cut weights for the period compressed pounds per head but as indicated above, weights are now par to a year ago.

PRIME CARCASS TONNAGE SET TO DECLINE

Most recent USDA quality grade data updates carcass grading trends through May 19th. This is precisely the week on the calendar at which the percentage of carcasses meeting USDA Prime marbling levels have sharply decreased in each of the past three years.

Throughout the supply chain many stakeholders are familiar with the annual spring phenomenon when U.S. average quality grades typically decline from winter highs toward spring lows. Many of us may think of the grade decline following a trend line generally paralleling that of the annual, similarly predictable, carcass weight lows around this time of year. While lighter average carcass weights are correlated with lower marbling scores, the annual realization of the lowest measurements for each of these traits is far from perfectly aligned.

On the product side of the business boxed beef values were mixed in last week’s report with weekly average cutout values varying slightly depending on grade. The CAB cutout was up just $0.34/cwt. while commodity Choice was lower by $0.24/cwt. Select gained on Choice a bit with a $1.21/cwt. cutout increase. This presented a

It is much more difficult to predict the week when the annual low in the combined percent Choice and Prime quality grades is realized. In the past 10 years the “low grade” week occurred as early as mid-April and as late as

the end of October. In the most recent 4 years the lows were placed in September or October. From 2014 to 2018 the lows came in April and May.

percent USDA Prime and percent CAB Prime carcasses will fall off rapidly. The latest 9.5% Prime carcass grading rate is 0.25 percentage points ahead of a year ago. The year-overyear increase for the most current week is an improvement on the year as the Prime share has run 0.39 percentage points below 2022 so far.

Singling out annual percent Prime grade trends results in a much more consistent pattern than when percent Choice is included. The ten-year trend for percent Prime suggests a strong vote that the annual low for the top USDA grade will come in June with six out of ten years claiming the June low. The month of July comes in as a second-place favorite with the seasonal bias favoring the two-month window.

Since 2018 the share of carcasses meeting all 10 carcass specifications for CAB has peaked in unison with the spring marbling highs in March. It then declines into early October when Modest and higher marbling (Premium Choice and Prime) carcasses are near their annual lows and carcass weights plus ribeye sizes are near their annual highs. The combination of these risk factors results in the annual lowest acceptance rates at that time.

As we turn the calendar to June it’s a fair assumption that

More importantly, Prime carcass tonnage is 4.6% lower (over the last four weeks) than a year ago due to lower slaughter head counts. This smaller supply and projected sharp drop in the coming weeks meets up with seasonally heightened beef demand. The Prime carcass cutout value rests at 12.8% higher than a year ago and retail prices are hefty for Prime cuts. The supply side is set to build further premiums into USDA Prime and CAB Prime carcasses. That’s great to the extent that producers should see the rewards. Yet, the consumer side of the equation remains a question as to demand resiliency in a more challenging economic market.

McHaffie Junior Ambassador and Chad and Becky Lorenz of Lorenz Angus in Red Deer County, AB were selected as the Outstanding Young Angus Breeder. Announced earlier in the day at the annual general meeting, Julie Sharp also received the Dick Turner Memorial Award.

The Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador program selects one Canadian Junior Angus (CJA) member to be an ambassador for the Canadian Angus Association at events across Canada and one international experience. Four other CJA members competed for the award. Jessica Davey of Saskatoon, SK; Sarah MacDonald of Vanderhoof, BC; Lainie Muir of Glenella, MB; and Carmen White of Claresholm, AB all deserve recognition for their impressive efforts in the competition.

Jessica Davey’s family operates Rivendale Cattle Company near Saskatoon, SK and she also has her own herd of 15 Angus females. She established Jessica Davey Photography in 2018, does contract livestock photography on farms and at shows and has an agricultural blog. She recently completed the second year of her bachelor of animal science at the University of Saskatchewan. Davey is the past president of the Saskatchewan Junior Angus Association and is secretary of her local 4-H club. She was also a finalist in the 2022 junior ambassador competition.

Sarah MacDonald grew up on a commercial Angus cow/calf operation in southern BC and her family currently ranches in the Nechako valley of northern BC. She recently graduated from Lakeland College with diplomas in crop technology and agribusiness with a major in marketing and communications. She is currently enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan, working towards a bachelor of science in agribusiness. MacDonald has also served as a CJA director and was president of the BC Junior Angus Association.

Lainie Muir volunteers extensively in her rural municipality of Glenella, MB organizing and promoting events and cleaning and maintaining local facilities. She is a student at the University of Saskatchewan College of Agriculture and Bioresources, is a CJA director and Manitoba Junior Angus Association president. She is also a 4-H member and volunteer, helping to organize and promote regional events.

Carmen White has had extensive involvement in Claresholm 4-H club serving as president, vice president, treasurer, reporter, parliamentarian, and secretary. She also enjoys volunteering in her community. White is in the Food and Agricultural Resource Economics program at the University of Guelph where she is on the Canadian Agri Marketing Competition Team and belongs to the beef science and judging clubs. White was also a finalist in the 2022 junior ambassador competition.

Julie Sharp has been a Canadian Junior Angus (CJA) member for nine years, receiving the 2020 CJA scholarship and 2022 Legacy Scholarship. She served as a director on the Alberta Junior Angus Association board of directors for four years and participated in 4-H for 10 years. She is currently pursuing a bachelor of science in agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan, majoring in animal science and minoring in agribusiness. She volunteers as the beef team merchandise

The Dick Turner Memorial Award was established after the passing of legendary Angus icon Dick Turner in July of 2010. During his lifetime, Dick committed 55 years of his career to livestock publishing and successfully promoted and advertised the Angus breed specifically through the Canadian Aberdeen Angus News magazine. It was Dick’s ability to foster relationships and his boundless enthusiasm that led to his successful tenure. He believed that “information is power” and was best shared with all stakeholders. Dick was a hard worker and recognized the quality of life and relationships as the most rewarding part of his job.

Chad and Becky Lorenz operate Lorenz Angus with Chad’s parents. Chad is the third generation to be involved in Lorenz Angus. Becky, nee Domolewski, grew up as part of CD Land and Cattle near Taber, AB. In 2018, Becky and Chad were married and purchased a homestead with land, which allowed them to expand the Lorenz Angus herd. Both Becky and Chad work off-farm, Becky for ATB Financial and Chad for Bouchard International, and remain actively involved in the day-to-day management of their operation. Chad and Becky both received a Dick Tuner Memorial Award and Chad served as Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador. Chad was a driving force in buying Black Angus sires for the Lakeland College herd during his time as president. Darryl Hickman, the staff member responsible for mentoring the Stockman’s Club at the time pointed out that Chad’s knowledge of Black Angus pedigrees was a major asset to improving the herd’s genetics. Chad and Becky both have a great mind for pedigrees and have a passion for sourcing out quality cattle. Becky and Chad value longevity in their cow herd and cull hard for feet and udders. They strive to create honest, balanced cattle that can go out into the industry and thrive. Having a small commercial herd as well as a boxed beef program allows them to observe their purebred herd through a commercial lens and see the impact of the decisions that they make on genetics all the way through to the final product.

The Outstanding Young Angus Breeder Award recognizes an Angus breeder between the ages of 22 and 30 who has demonstrated a desire to stay involved in the Angus business for years to come based on their involvement within the breed up to this point in his or her career. The award comes with a $5,000 cash prize.
