PATIO RENOVATION

FAM FAM. You will hear this word often here. It has many variations, Food, Art, Music. Friends, Artists and Makers. Freshman, Alumni and Makers. All are true, and reflect this core understanding that we create from. We are indeed a family. There is love here. A deep love that is born out of respect, and a recognition in the other that we all need to make stuff. To tell stories. To understand our world, and indeed ourselves, through making. The renovation project for this year was the patio behind the painting studio. Originally this was a working studio space, but over the year, had become the repository for stuff we werre no longer using, but felt guilty about throwing away. Leslie, Annemarie, Nathaniel and I spent 8hrs one hot summer day, and emptied out the entire space. A few weeks later, Yvonne, Yessenia and Grace used weed sprayers and sprayed the paint on, creating wonderful oceanic swirls. On his return from hiking, Tim and Scott gradually began to dispose of the mounds of garbage. This space, has become a wonderful setting to hold outdoor critiques during painting class. A quite place for students to sit by themselves and sketch. The barbecue grills found a natural home off to the side, facilitating many impormptu dinners. This space reflects who we are. We believe in doing things ourselves, and together. This is our home. Our family. We invite you to join us and become part of our FAM. –Terrill Thomas

ART EAT FILM, BECOMES FAM NIGHTS FAM Nights are about community. A community art and design majors, alumni, our friends, and the perfect event to invite incoming Freshman students to. Students and friends come together around 5pm to harvest the garden of tomatoes, cucumbers and bellpeppers. We cook together, and try out new recipes. This isn’t your hot dogs and chips summer food. We use fresh produce and cook Indian, Thai, Mexican and Vietnamese. While we visit and share a meal, students and alumni, take turn sharing their latest creative projects, for feedback from their peers. Some bring paintings in, others project their Instagram feed onto the wall.

A+D FAM FIELDTRIP / OCEANSIDE + CARNIVAL OF ASTOUNDING ART + BEACH DAY // Over 20 Art+Design majors, alumni and friends

visited the Oceanside Museum of Art to see the Carnival of Astounding Art curated by Bob Self of BabyTatoo. After the exhibit, we spent the afternoon at the beach, testing out the GoPro cameras in the surf and just relaxing. The evening ended with dinner at Killer Pizza from Space!

LAGUNA CANYON HIKE One of the best things about La Sierra University is our proximity to Laguna Beach. Laguna Canyon offers a challenging 5 mile hike, with steep ascents and an occasional rattlesnake!

HUNTINGTON BEACH, BEACH DAY What better way to start the summer, than a day at Huntington Beach. Students, friends and alumni spent the day swimming in the surf, grilling hot dogs, and just enjoying a beautiful summer day together. Of course no day would be complete without building a 4 high pyramid! As a department we place a incredibly high value on getting outside, and recharing our creative batteries and physical bodies. As much as we love working in the studios, we enjoy a day out in nature.

Hikers that reach the bridge are rewarded with a stream that runs deep enough to swim in. This annual hike is a wonderful chance for Art+Design students to connect with alumni and make new friends.

ALGERS CREEK HIKE Algers Creek is a short hour drive from LSU, located in the San Bernardino Mountains. Hiking provides a wonderful way to connect with nature and make new friends. While hiking, one becomes attuned to the subtle color graduations found in the trees and greenery. Without the city noise, our ears find rest in the gentle rustle of the wind, and the chirping of the birds. Spending time in nature is the perfect way to enjoy a Sabbath rest from the digital world.
