MESSAGE FROM
THE PRODUCER It’s our 20th birthday! Where does the time go? It seems like just yesterday the planning got underway for the first Edmonton Blues Festival—that was over 21 years ago. Since then, we’ve seen over 300 acts and tens of thousands of happy Blues Hounds revel in the music they love. There have been a few hurdles along the way, like having to endure cold, wet weather. Remember 2004 when it started raining Friday at exactly 5:45 pm and continued right through to Monday morning, with temperatures hovering around 4°C on Sunday? If so, you might also remember that Jimmie Vaughan,
who closed the festival that year, stayed out in the cold for 90 minutes after the show to sign autographs. But there were also moments of perfect harmony—glorious summer days at the amphitheatre when we worked up a sweat dancing to the music and enjoying performances by the best blues musicians on the planet. ‘Community’ is a word bandied about these days with increasing regularity. But this is what the blues (and this festival) has been about from the very beginning. There’s our community of 250 volunteers who make our little blues city hum—we have 10 who have been with us for all 20 years, and many others who have been around for 15 years or more! There’s our community of blues fans from around the world (literally) who
make the trek to Edmonton each summer for the festival, and those right here who wouldn’t miss their favourite weekend of the year. And of course, there’s our sponsors who believe in what we do, and support it. All are part of this community that stretches around the globe. This year, we have representatives from the Blues Foundation Board of Directors (including the President and CEO of this worldwide body) joining us, as well as media from Switzerland, Australia, the United States, and Western Canada. As always, dig the music, dance, relax, catch up with friends, discover new artists, and enjoy the one’s you’re already familiar with. Make sure to thank a volunteer, and I’ll see you ‘round the Fest!

BOOKER T PRESENTS:
A Stax Revue and a Journey Thru Soul, Blues and R&B Friday – 8:30PM Born in Memphis, Booker T Jones played oboe, sax, trombone, bass and piano at school, where he was a musical prodigy. He played sax on the very first Stax Records hit “Cause I Love You” waxed by Rufus and Carla Thomas (the label was then called Satellite). While a much in-demand sideman for Stax, he also formed his own band, The MGs, in 1962 and had a string of memorable hits. “Green Onions” and “Time Is Tight” are familiar
tunes that defined R&B for many in the 60s, but they’re just the beginning—the man behind those iconic grooves and much more brings his 10-piece Revue to close Friday night. With four Grammys, and a host of other awards, we can expect an incredible close to our first evening of music this year. bookert.com

Cecile Doo-Kingue Saturday – 2:30PM Living Blues magazine says that Cecile Doo-Kingue is “full of sophisticated musicianship and striking lyricism” and that’s just the beginning. Born and raised in New York City, first generation from Cameroon, she has lived in the US, France and now works from her adopted home of Montreal. A gifted guitarist, powerful singer, and talented songwriter Cecile Doo-Kingue brings a unique vision to the blues that deserves your attention. cdkmusik.com Selected Discography: Anybody Listening: Dialogues, Pt. 2 (2016), Gris (2012), Freedom Calling (2010) EDMONTON BLUES FESTIVAL 2018

Paul DesLauriers Band Saturday – 3:55PM
The Paul DesLauriers Band is quite likely the title holder for the most Maple Blues Awards. Each member of the trio has taken the trophy for their instrument and as a band they have won as “Entertainer” and “Electric Act of the Year” many times. Guitarist Paul DesLauriers, bassist Greg Morency, and drummer Sam Harrison have worked together on many projects for nearly 20 years. With uncanny musical chemistry it’s no wonder they’ve won so many awards. Their vibe is reminiscent of the great power trios of the 60s and 70s, with a modern twist. Catch them in their Edmonton Blues Festival debut! pauldeslauriersband.com Selected Discography: Relentless (2016), The Paul DesLauriers Band (2014)

Monkeyjunk Saturday – 6:55PM Do we have to tell you anything about Monkeyjunk? The trio of Steve Marriner (harps, guitars, keys), Tony D (guitar), and Matt Sobb (drums) has become ‘the’ Canadian blues band since getting together 10 years ago, playing worldwide to
appreciative audiences. They are record holders for CD sales at this festival (458 during their set in 2010) and your Blues Juno winners for 2018 on the strength of their recording “Time to Roll.” We’re honoured to have them back once more. monkeyjunkband.com

Samantha Fish Saturday – 8:30PM Samantha Fish is, according to the New York Times, “an impressive blues guitarist who sings with sweet power and is one of the genre’s most promising young talents.” The Kansas City native kicked off her recording career in 2009 and has since taken the blues world by storm, touring worldwide to incredible acclaim while charting her own blues journey through her song writing and incendiary playing. Samantha won the “Contemporary Blues – Female Artist” award at the Blues Music Awards in Memphis last May, and you can catch her Edmonton Blues Festival debut as Saturday’s closer. samanthafish.com Selected Discography: Belle of the West (2017), Wild Heart (2015), Runaway (2011)

DAVID
VEST Sunday – 1:50PM
Native Alabaman and Victoria-based David Vest writes incredibly succinct and wry blues songs, plays a mean piano, and brings it all together with panache and style. He’s been at the festival twice before with bands, but it’ll be a rare treat to have him open Sunday this year as a solo performer. davidvest.ca Selected Discography: David Vest (2018), Devestatin’ Rhythm (2016), Roadhouse Revelation (2014) EDMONTON BLUES FESTIVAL 2018

Rusty Reed Band Sunday – 2:30PM Rusty is a fixture on the Edmonton Blues scene. He’s won a Juno and the hearts of many. He has played the festival many times, beginning in 2001 when he appeared with Brent Parkin. This time around he fronts his own band of Edmonton veterans that includes the twin guitars of Jimmy Guiboche and Rodger Stanley with the veteran rhythm section of Scott Anderson (drums) and Chris Brzezicki (bass). Marcia
Marcia first brought her down-home Texas/Louisiana style of piano playing and songwriting to the Edmonton Blues Festival way back in 2002. She returns with her all-star, Austin-based band to add a little Southern swagger and bring the party to our Sunday afternoon. “Shine Bright,” her Alligator Records release of earlier this year finds her in fine form, playing up a storm, and penning great original songs. The Boston Globe calls Ball “a compelling storyteller who plays an irresistible, celebratory blend of rollicking two-fisted New Orleans piano, Louisiana Swamp rock and smouldering Texas blues.”
Ball
Named “Keyboard Player of the Year” by the Living Blues Readers’ Poll, “Texas State Musician” for 2018 and being inducted into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame this year, adds to Marcia’s already impressive resume. “Fifty years have passed in a flash,” says Marcia of her storied musical career that has brought her worldwide fame and countless fans. marciaball.com

Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band Sunday – 5:25PM Zydeco has been a regular visitor to the Edmonton Blues Festival over the years. Chubby Carrier’s Bayou Swamp Band is certainly a favourite, having been here on three separate occasions (2004, 2009, 2011). Chubby won a Grammy a few years ago but that hasn’t gone to his head. “There Ain’t No Party Like a Chubby Party, ‘Cause a Chubby Party Don’t Stop” is the title of one of his great dance tunes and that’s the way it is. Last time, Chubby had at least 50 people up on the stage, dancing in pure joy—don’t forget your dancin’ shoes and you, too, will become a ‘Zydeco Junkie!’ chubbycarrier.com Selected Discography: Blackpot (2018), Zydeco Junkie (2010), Dance All Night (1993)

Rick Estrin & The Nightcats Sunday – 6:55PM Rick Estrin played the very first Edmonton Blues Festival, closing Friday night, and he’s been here a few times since then. He’s an award-winning harmonica player, full of witty songs and incredible showmanship. His current band feature is Chris “Kid” Andersen, an incendiary guitarist and much sought-after record producer who owns Greaseland Studios. This past May, the group was nominated for no less than eight Blues Music Awards and they won three: “Band of the Year,” “Song of the Year,” and “Traditional Blues Male Artist of the Year” for Rick. Sugaray Rayford Big Band Sunday – 8:30PM Closing this year’s festival is one of the most requested acts ever to hit the stage here. “Sugaray” Rayford is 6’6” of Texas blues power, energy, and dynamic showmanship. First appearing as part of the Mannish Boys in 2013, he returned in 2015 fronting his own band. Nominated as “Entertainer,” “Vocalist,” and “Soul Blues Album of the Year” at the Blues Music Awards this past May, Sugaray Rayford is hitting the peak of his musical prowess! Sure to lift the roof off the Heritage Amphitheatre, we can’t think of a better way to close our 20th Annual Festival than with Sugaray and his powerhouse big band. sugarayblues.com Selected Discography: The World That We Live In (2017), Southside (2015), Blind Alley (2010) EDMONTON BLUES FESTIVAL 2018

Big Dave McLean Artist At Large Various Times and Days Juno-nominated Canadian blues legend Big Dave McLean has been at the Edmonton Blues Festival twice (2000 and 2012). We’re stoked to have him as our “Artist at Large” for the 20th anniversary edition of the festival hot on the heels of his Maple Blues Award as “Acoustic Artist of the Year” this past January. McLean is often viewed as an unsung hero of Canadian blues, and an inspiration to younger generations of musicians such as Colin James and Wide Mouth Mason. Ever since getting his start with an impromptu guitar lesson from John Hammond at the 1969 Mariposa Folk Festival, this Yorkton-born, Winnipeg-based artist has been devoted to his craft, touring
relentlessly through Canada’s blues bars, folk clubs, and folk and blues festivals. Along the way, there have been career highs: opening for and hanging with his idol, Muddy Waters, earning two WCMAs, a Prairie Music Award, a Whisky Award, and countless Maple Blues honours – including the Blues with Feeling (lifetime achievement) Award and sharing a Juno for his contribution to CBC’s Saturday Night Blues Vol. 1 album. Billboard’s Larry LeBlanc wrote that Dave “has done more to shape western Canada’s blues scene than perhaps any other artist.” Keep your eyes peeled during festival weekend—you never know where Dave may be!
