MESSAGE FROM
THE PRODUCER
H
ere we go again… this year we are “3 times 7” (blues talk for 21) and it’s quite possible that we are maturing. I know I have more grey hair than I did 21 years ago, and I know that’s the case for a lot of our long time Blues Hounds, fans that have been with us, in many cases, from Day One. But just because we’re maturing, doesn’t mean we’ve lost our sense of fun, or that we have forgotten how to dance and lose ourselves in the music that we all love: the blues. Check out the stage this weekend... musicians from their 20s to their 80s
will share their version of what the blues is. The best definition of the blues that I’ve heard came from Brownie Mcghee, who said “Blues is Truth”… and every August since 1999, we’ve done our best to bring you that truth, fill the hole in your soul, put the glide back in your stride, and plaster a smile on your face with a party that is second to none. How do we do it? First, we ask the best blues men and women from around the world to join us. These artists have numerous accolades and have won Maple Blues Awards, Junos, the International Blues Challenge, Blues Music Awards and Grammys. This year we have performers from across Canada and the United States; from the UK and the Netherlands. They all bring their “Blues Truth” with
them, and they are all eager to share that truth with you. Second, we credit our “Blues Ambassadors.” The 250 volunteers set up, clean up, serve up the drinks, look after all the details that go into this event and dedicate their time and energy to making sure you, the Blues Hounds, (the third part of this happy equation), have the best damn time possible. They do that with the help of our sponsors. Whether it’s your first time here, or your 21st , enjoy the ride, because this weekend is truly about the journey, not the destination. On your way, thank a volunteer, hit the dance floor and take the time to catch up with friends old and new. Discover your own “Blues Truth.” Cheers, Cam Hayden

ott’n Dan and Lightnin’ Willy, hot off the release of their new CD, take the stage. Edmonton blues fans are well aware of the talent that is Dan Shinnan (AKA Rott’n Dan) As the front man, singer and harmonica player for Boogie Patrol, Dan fronts the best blues party band in the area today, and his performance with Boogie Patrol at the 2017 Edmonton Blues Festival had the crowd on its feet, cheering for more. One of Dan’s other projects is the totally engaging, back to the basics of the blues acoustic blues duo “Rott’n Dan and Lightnin’ Willy”. Focussing on pre-war Piedmont and Delta Blues, the pair bring an energy and authenticity to the music that is sure to move you. It certainly moved the judges at the Edmonton Blues Society’s “Road to Memphis” Challenge who gave the duo top marks and sent them to Memphis to compete in the solo/duo category at The International Blues Challenge in January 2019. Saturday at 1:50PM, The Rooster Davis Group, fronted by David Aide (AKA Rooster Davis) take the stage…
specializing in the New Orleans traditions of seminal players such as Dr. John, Professor Longhair, Allen Toussaint, and James Booker, Davis’ own style is a combination of everything he has learned from these great players, giving him a driving, rhythmic style of playing the blues, and a heavy NOLA second line funk feel. Rooster Davis has toured around the world and has a strong following in Western Europe and Australia. He has appeared at many festivals nationally and internationally including The Edmonton International Jazz Festival, Beaumont Blues and Roots Festival, Calgary International Blues Festival, Kitchener Blues and Roots Festival, Toronto Blues Summit, Vienna Blues Festival, Sydney Blues and Roots Festival, and Australian Blues and Roots Festival. Roosters’ recording, For Saints and Sinners, won best blues recording from the Edmonton Blues Society, and was nominated for best blues and roots recording at the Edmonton Music
Awards in 2016. The Rooster Davis Group went on to claim Best Band in the Memphis Blues Challenge for Northern Alberta and attended the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2017. They were the first Edmonton band to make it to the semi-finals. Rooster’s album has garnered play on blues stations across North America, and across the pond in Europe. Joined by trombonist Audrey Ochoa, saxophonist Dave Babcock, Paul Bergeron on bass and drummer Peter Hendrickson The Rooster Davis Group kicks off Saturday… Samantha King and the YEG Trio represented Edmonton at the 2019 International Blues Challenge in Memphis. The group of veteran players showcases the considerable vocal talents and stage presence of Samantha King. King was born to sing the blues, with her fiery, emotional delivery of every song she sings. Over her 20-year career she has been nominated for a Juno and three Canadian Country Music Awards, as well as being the grand prize winner of the 2006 John Lennon Song Writing Competition (Country Music Category). Samantha has put together a dynamic trio consisting of drummer Sandro Dominelli (nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award and a Juno); Marc Beaudin whose compositions and arrangements have been recorded by many great artists; and Jimmy Guiboche who has spent two decades earning a reputation as one of Canada’s premier blues string slingers.

“My fondest memory of this recording is of (co-producer) DAVID COLE and I listening to Rick Vito play the slide guitar solo late one night. It was the single most spectacular overdub I’d ever heard.
RICK VITO G
Friday, August 23 – 5:30PM
uitarist Rick Vito was born in a suburb of Philadelphia. Though very young, Rick distinctly remembers the impact of the early years of Rock & Roll and the effect it had on his interest in playing the guitar. Rick studied the styles of the great Blues masters. At the top of this list was the great B.B. KING, and also included such stellar musicians as ELMORE JAMES, MAGIC SAM, SLIM HARPO, OTIS RUSH, FREDDIE and ALBERT KING and EARL HOOKER. Vito also took much inspiration from second generation interpreters of the music. Rick recalls: “I went to see the original FLEETWOOD MAC with Peter Green around 1968, and thirty years later, I’m still in awe of his performance that night. Peter was a master of taste and tone, sang great songs amazingly well, and was obviously the guiding force behind his band. He was just about everything I wanted to be as a musician. I’m still working on it!”
Moving to the Hollywood Hills in the summer of 1971, Rick did his first pro work on tour with Delaney & Bonnie. Soon after, he began to establish himself as a respected recording session player first appearing on Todd Rundgren’s classic album, “SOMETHING ANYTHING”. Late in 1974 Rick received an invitation to join a new band being formed by British Blues pioneer, JOHN MAYALL, with whom Rick worked with subsequently on four albums. In between solo recording and live shows in the LA area, Rick continued session dates with many artists including RITA COOLIDGE, MARIA MULDAUR and came to the attention of legendary rocker, BOB SEGER. Looking for a rootsy guitar sound to add to his work in progress, Bob enlisted Rick to try his hand at a solo over two long passages in a song entitled, “LIKE A ROCK”. The result of Vito’s efforts is now considered something of a classic. Of the experience Seger says,
Say Vito, “I got a call one day from MICK FLEETWOOD. LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM had just been let go and Mick wanted Billy and I to learn some Mac tunes and come over to play with the band. Rick joined the band as a member in July, 1987 and began rehearsing for the “TANGO IN THE NIGHT” world tour. Soon after, the group released it’s “GREATEST HITS” album which featured two new cuts on which feature Rick. In 1989 Fleetwood Mac began work on what would become “BEHIND THE MASK”, a solid collection of songs by CHRISTINE MCVIE, STEVIE NICKS, and Billy Burnette, as well as four original tunes written and performed by Rick Vito. During 1998 and 1999, Rick participated in a world tour with singer/guitarist BONNIE RAITT in support of her CD, “FUNDAMENTAL”. During this time he appeared on “OPRAH”, “DAVID LETTERMAN”, “THE TONIGHT SHOW”, as well as the LILLITH FAIR TOUR and the ERIC CLAPTON EUROPEAN TOUR. In 2002 Rick was the recipient of the W.C. HANDY award for “BLUES SONG OF THE YEAR 2001” for his composition, “IT’S 2 A.M.”, as performed by the incredible blues shouter, SHEMEKIA COPELAND. In 2009-2010, “Blue Again,” the live DVD from the Mick Fleetwood Blues Band featuring Rick Vito was released in the US, Europe and Australia. This exciting video was captured on the band’s European tour in Canterbury, England, and features seven Vito compositions. Shortly after its release, it was honored by being nominated for a 2010 Grammy Award in the “Best Traditional Blues” category. rickvito.com

f Steve Marriner isn’t the busiest musician on the Canadian blues scene, the multi-instrumentalist and singer best known for his work with Monkeyjunk certainly ranks near the top of the list. Marriner’s year began when he won the Harmonica Player of the year hardware at the Maple Blues Awards in Toronto, his sixth time winning that trophy. A few weeks later, Marriner headed out on a national tour with Colin James, where his ferocious harp playing was a perfect foil for James’ award-winning blues sound. In the midst of that tour, Stony Plain/True North released the Manx/Marriner Mainline disc “Hellbound for Heaven”, an album that puts Marriner in the company of longtime friend and mentor Harry Manx. Steve handled guitars, keyboards, and of course harmonica on the sessions and shared lead vocals and songwriting duties on the latest from both stellar artists.

sings with a voice brimming with attitude and soulfulness. With influences ranging from Little Richard to The Ramones, from Billie Holiday to Queens of the Stone Age, Lindsay has crafted a timeless sound and personal style that simply cannot be denied. Hailing from Halifax, Beaver possesses an old soul at the young age of 33. She is a classically trained vocalist and a jazz-trained drummer with a deep love and knowledge of roots music, from blues to jazz to R&B ballads to raucous rock ‘n’ roll. Live and on her recordings, she lays it all on the line, performing her signature mix of unforgettable originals and dance floor-filling versions of songs by artists as diverse as Sam Cooke and The Detroit Cobras. Her Alligator Records debut, Tough As Love, introduces her as a true force of nature with a sky’s-the-limit future.

She befriended guitarist Jimmie Vaughan, who recognized her talent instantly. She started making regular pilgrimages to Austin to jam with locals beginning in 2014. BIG PETE WITH 13
Featuring Alex Schultz and Zach Zunis Saturday, August 24 – 5:40PM
E
very year at the Edmonton Blues Festival we work with artists to come up with bands that are unique, one off expressions of the music we love…bands that are more than the sum of their parts. Saturday afternoon we present the world-wide debut of Big Pete with 13. Fronted by Dutch harp man and vocalist Big Pete, backed by 2 of the tastiest guitarists around and a rock solid, road tested, rhythm section, Big Pete with 13 will rip the roof off the Heritage Amphitheatre. Pieter “Big Pete” van der Pluijm was handpicked for a European memorial tour honoring the music and memory of harmonica player/vocalist Lester Butler and was backed by several of Lester’s original band mates from the Red Devils and Thirteen. The project was a great success and was followed
by tours with the Lester Butler Tribute Band. Pete’s first album “Choice Cuts” was released in 2011 and nominated for a Blues Music Award as best new artist debut. In 2017, Pete got the call to front the original Red Devils for a reunion tour as special guests for ZZ-Top. They recorded “Return of the Red Devils”. Since then, The Big Pete Blues Band has been performing at blues festivals, fronting the reunited Red Devils and the Kid Ramos Blues Band. Regarded as one of the premier blues harp players & singers in the world today, he appeared at the Edmonton Blues Festival with Matt Schofield in 2013. Guitarist Alex Schultz played with Hank Ballard and the Midnighters, and has recorded on over 45 projects. He’s
toured the world playing behind Bo Diddley, Bonnie Raitt, Paul Butterfield, Jimmy Rodgers, Lowell Fulson, Pinetop Perkins, James Cotton, Albert Collins, and Snooks Eaglin. Tasty and understated with style and panache, Alex brings serious experience and tone to the table. Guitarist Zach Zunis, an ambassador of the blues, has spent a lifetime playing around the world. Zach spent years on the road with William Clark, Rick Holmstrom, Lester Butler and more. His signature blazing West Coast-onsteroids sound can be heard on countless recordings. Zach is known in these parts for being with the Janiva Magness band and has played the festival with Janiva on multiple occasions. ‘Love Wins Again’, his sixth recording with Janiva, was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Drummer Johnny Morgan grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan in the shadow of Motown and began playing the drums at age nine. His first European tour and festival was at The Montreux Switzerland Jazz Festival in 1979 where he was on the bill with Weather Report and Willie Bobo. Johnny performed with Lester Butler in the ‘90s and recorded with Lester on the “13” LP. Johnny has also worked with Carey Bell, Lynwood Slim, Ron Thompson and Roy Gaines to name a few. Bassist Mike Hightower brings a wealth of experience to the table as a session player and member of Lester Butler’s original “13” band. He’s also a member of The 44’s, who made their way to the Edmonton Blues Festival in 2015. Real, raw, edgy, and with over a century of experience between them, Big Pete with 13 make their world-wide debut at the 21st annual Edmonton Blues Festival. LIL JIMMY REED AND HIS BAND Saturday, August 24 – 7:05PM
A
fter turning in a killer performance that had the crowd on its feet for most of their set in 2016, The Lil Jimmy Reed Band came to the attention of festival promoters across western Canada. He’s since worked the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival and Calgary International Blues Festival. When we heard Jimmy (from Louisiana) along with boogie woogie demon Bob Hall and his bass playing partner Hilary (both from the UK) would be in western Canada in August we couldn’t resist having the 81-year old string slinger back for an encore. Leon Atkins, better known as Lil’ Jimmy Reed, is the real deal, as will be attested to by anyone who has been privileged to hear his stinging guitar work, gritty vocals and haunting harmonica. A tall charismatic figure, Lil’ Jimmy epitomises the classic Louisiana down-home blues tradition. Born in the late 1930s in a shot-gun shack in
Hardwood, LA, a small cotton and sawmill town on the Mississippi, Leon grew up near a club where every night he absorbed the wail of the blues from across the street. At six he had his own guitar, made from a cigar box, and by the time he was a teenager he was proficient on both guitar and harmonica, playing local clubs around Baton Rouge. Filling-in one night for blues star Jimmy Reed earned him the nickname Lil’ Jimmy Reed and started him on the long path to success. After years of playing small clubs and taverns, Lil’ Jimmy took time out to serve his country in the military. Since his return to civilian life his career has blossomed. He has shared the stage with B. B. King and Bobby “Blue” Bland and head-lined festivals in the USA, UK, Canada, Ireland, Belgium, France, Holland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Switzerland. His many fans recognize that Lil’ Jimmy’s performances
are almost the last chance to hear the raw, unadulterated sound of authentic Louisiana blues. In the 60s, the blues came to Britain and inspired a generation of teenagers who in turn took the music to international success. Prominent amongst these young men was the critically-acclaimed pianist Bob Hall, whose distinctive blues and boogie style on hundreds of recordings has influenced a host of others. Bob and his wife, the dynamic singer and rock-steady bassist Hilary Blythe, have joined forces with Lil’ Jimmy to form The Lil’ Jimmy Reed Band. Over the past five years this tight little outfit has given a series of show-stopping performances all over Europe and North America. Lil Jimmy Reed continues to play all over North America and Europe and as he happily says “life just gets better with time”.

urtis Salgado grew up in Eugene, Oregon. His home was always filled with music. His parents’ record collection included everything from Count Basie to Fats Waller, and his older brother and sister turned him on to the soul and blues of Wilson Pickett and Muddy Waters. He attended a Count Basie performance when he was 13 and decided then and there that music was his calling. Curtis began devouring the blues of Little Walter and Paul Butterfield, fell in love with the harmonica and taught himself to play. By his early 20s, Salgado was already making a name for himself in Eugene’s
bar scene with his band The Nighthawks, and later as co-leader of The Robert Cray Band. Salgado quickly developed into a player and singer of remarkable depth. In 1977, comedian/actor John Belushi was in Eugene filming Animal House. During downtime from production, Belushi caught a typically ferocious Salgado performance and introduced himself during a break. Once Salgado started sharing some of his blues knowledge, a fast friendship grew. Salgado spent hours playing old records for Belushi, teaching him about blues and R&B. Belushi soaked up the music like a sponge and used his new awareness to
Once Salgado joined forces with his friend Robert Cray and began playing together as The Robert Cray Band, he found himself sharing stages with many of his heroes, including Muddy Waters, Bobby Bland, Albert Collins and Bonnie Raitt. Curtis went on to front Roomful Of Blues, singing and touring with them from 1984 through 1986. Back home in Oregon, he formed a new band, Curtis Salgado & The Stilettos, and was once again tearing it up on the club scene, where he honed his band to a razor’s edge before releasing his first solo album in 1991. His friend and fan Steve Miller invited Curtis and his band to open for him on a summer shed tour in 1992. Two years later, Salgado spent the summer on the road singing with Santana. Salgado signed with Shanachie Records in 1999, putting out four critically acclaimed albums. He successfully battled back from liver cancer in 2006 and lung cancer in 2008 and 2012, reemerging stronger and more determined to share his music with the world. On his latest band recording The Beautiful Lowdown, the deeply-rooted singer effortlessly blends classic soul sounds and funk grooves with up-to-the-minute lyrics. His full-force vocals – intense and uninhibited – bring an urgency and edge to his timeless original songs. Blues Revue, describing Salgado’s performance style, declares, “He starts at excellent before segueing into goose bumps, ecstasy, and finally nirvana.” This will be Curtis’ third trip to the Edmonton Blues Festival (his first since 2010) and it’s high time we were treated to another round of this multiple Blues Music Award winning singer and harmonica player. curtissalgado.com

Born in Portland, Oregon, Alan Hager has taken a long and fascinating journey to his current spot as lead guitarist in Salgado’s band. He first picked up a guitar at age ten and became a blues and jazz prodigy. He was playing local clubs as a teenager before heading to Boston’s Berklee School of Music, where he studied under the tutelage of jazz guitar legend Pat Metheny. But he never fell out of love with the blues, especially the old Delta sounds of Charlie Patton, Tommy Johnson and Skip James. He moved back to Portland in 1988 and soon met fellow blues aficionado Curtis Salgado. They have been making music together since 2003, with Curtis’ voice and harmonica and Alan’s hypnotic guitar work perfectly complementing each other.

aturday night at the Edmonton Blues Festival we’ll be treated to a performance by The Curtis Salgado band , but Sunday may be even more fun, with the new Curtis Salgado/Alan Hager duo tearing it up, acoustically. Award-winning soul, blues and R&B vocalist Curtis Salgado’s earth-shaking vocals and forceful harmonica playing have been devastating audiences around the world for over 30 years. Guitarist Alan Hager has been wowing fellow musicians from his hometown of Portland, Oregon and beyond for decades. Hager has been jamming with Salgado
since 2003, and joined his band fulltime in 2015. Together, the two blues fans and friends took time out of their busy touring schedule to record Rough Cut, a stripped-down album featuring a potent mix of newly written, timeless originals and carefully chosen blues covers. “We did it for the love of the music,” says Salgado. “This is where our hearts are. These are deep songs that we love to play.” “He’s the best player in the business, unlike anybody else,” Salgado says of Hager. “One reason I made this record was to show him off.” Selected Discography: Rough Cut (2018)

Salgado won three 2013 Blues Music Awards including the coveted B.B. King Entertainer Of The Year. He also won for Soul Blues Male Artist Of The Year, and for Soul Blues Album Of The Year. In 2017 Salgado won three more Blues Music Awards: Soul Blues Album Of The Year for The Beautiful Lowdown, Song Of The Year for Walk A Mile In My Blues and Soul Blues Male Artist Of The Year. With Curtis’ inspired singing and world-class harmonica playing and Alan’s spellbinding guitar, Rough Cut is the album Salgado and Hager have always wanted to make together—soulful, sparse, haunting—a blues lover’s dream come true. The music is a moving exploration of the joyful, emotionally uplifting power of passionately played and soulfully sung acoustic blues. They’ll perform together as a duo both on their own and during Curtis’ full band shows, giving their fans a taste of what Alan calls “American Classical music.” “This type of music moves us the most,” says Salgado. “You believe it when you hear it.” curtissalgado.com

MISSISSIPPI HEAT WITH LURRIE BELL Sunday, August 24 – 3:50PM
M
ississippi Heat first wowed audiences at the Edmonton Blues Festival in 2016, with their fiery brand of Chicago blues. For this encore appearance, they have a special guest in tow…Chicago blues royalty, Lurrie Bell. “If there is a Chicago blues child who perhaps epitomizes the blues life, it’s Lurrie Bell…the premier guitarist in the Windy City,” said Boston Blues News. Born in 1958, the son of famed blues harmonica player Carey Bell, Lurrie Bell picked up his father’s guitar at age of five and taught himself to play. He was clearly gifted. In addition, he grew up with many of the Chicago blues legends around him. Eddie Taylor, Big Walter Horton, Eddie C. Campbell, Eddie Clearwater, Jimmy Dawkins and many more were frequent visitors to his house. They all helped to shape and school him in the blues, but none as much as his father’s long-time employer Muddy Waters.
In 1978 Bell joined Koko Taylor’s band and stayed for several years, honing his chops and learning the ropes of being a traveling musician. Not only was Bell recognized as an exceptionally talented guitarist and musician, his knowledge of different blues styles, his soulfulness and his musical maturity delivered write-ups in publications such as Rolling Stone and The New York Times. Since 2007 he has received multiple Blues Music Award nominations as Best Guitarist and Best Traditional Male Blues Artist. At last count Lurrie Bell has now appeared on over 50+ recordings either as leader or featured sideman. Pierre Lacocque, Mississippi Heat’s band leader and song writer was born in 1952, in Israel, of Christian-Belgian parenthood. However, shortly after his birth, Pierre’s family moved to Germany and France before going back to Belgium in 1957.
When he came to Chicago in 1969 he finally detected his destiny: playing the blues on the harmonica. He was sixteen years old and on a Saturday night in the fall of 1969 Pierre went to a concert at the University of Chicago. “I was absolutely stunned and in awe by the sounds I heard coming from that harmonica player and his amplifier … It sounded like a horn, yet distinct and unique”. The harmonica player went by the name of Big Walter Horton, a name he had never heard before but who changed his life forever. What he heard that night, the music, the mood, the style and sounds, moved his soul. MISSISSIPPI HEAT emerged in 1991 on a night at the Cafe Lura in Chicago. Guitarist Jon McDonald invited Pierre to play harp for him with Robert Covington on drums and vocals. It was a great night...Pierre looked happy, and the band played with inspiration.…a band was born. Inetta Visor has blessed Mississippi Heat with her voice since 2001. She was born in 1955 on the South Side of Chicago. It was a rare moment when she was found not singing or humming a song to herself. Her first professional gig was in 1971, and she continued to hone her singing skills on and off the stage whenever she could. 2001 saw Inetta offer her services to Mississippi Heat. The rest is history. Since joining the band, they have recorded three albums and a DVD with Inetta, all of which have received awards. Inetta also won the Best Blues Singer competition at the House Of Blues (Chicago) in 2003. In all, Pierre and the Heat now have 7 CDs and a DVD for Delmark Records. Among others, their recordings have won “BEST CHICAGO BLUES CD OF THE YEAR” and “BEST BLUES PRODUCTION OF THE YEAR” mississippiheat.net / lurrie.com

SONNY LANDRETH
Saturday, August 24 – 7:00PM
onny Landreth began playing guitar after a long tenure with the trumpet. His earliest inspiration came from Scotty Moore, but as time went on, he learned from the recordings of musicians and groups like Chet Atkins and The Ventures. After his first professional gig with accordionist Clifton Chenier in the ‘70s (where he was the only white guy in the Red Beans & Rice Revue for awhile), he struck out on his own, Sonny Landreth has collaborated with the very top names in guitar over the years: Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Eric Johnson, Derek Trucks – the list goes on. The noted slideman cut his musical teeth in The Red Hot Louisiana Band of zydeco king Clifton Chenier, and Landreth has since recorded and toured with artists ranging from John Mayall to John Hiatt.
After a dozen acclaimed albums, virtuoso slide guitarist and bandleader Sonny Landreth wanted to finally create the full-length acoustic collection his fans had long requested. But he was also itching to capture the sound of his stalwart electric trio augmented by a couple of his favorite collaborators. And the time was certainly right for an elastic, career-spanning double-live album. Released last year to critical acclaim, “Live in Lafayette” perfectly encapsulates what Edmonton Blues Festival audiences will see for the first time… a master guitarist, at the top of his form, drawing on myriad influences and putting them in a tasty gumbo of musical excellence. Long time pals bassist Dave Ranson and drummer Brian Brignac join Sonny for this performance. sonnylandreth.com

CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE Sunday, August 25 – 8:30PM
harlie Musselwhite has taken blues harp from the clubs on the Southside of Chicago (where “Memphis Charlie” and Mike Bloomfield backed Big Joe Williams) to places it’s never been before, both musically and physically. He’s soloed to “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” with Cyndi Lauper on Good Morning America; wailed on “Echo Bells” with Japan’s Kodo drummers (produced by the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart); and mixed blues with Cuban son legend Eliades Ochoa, each playing on the other’s album. He’s jammed on stage with Mick Jagger and recorded with such diverse artists as INXS, Tom Waits, bluegrass fiddler Vassar Clements, Blind Boys of Alabama, and Cat Stevens. And shortly before winning the Grammy for Best Blues Album for their collaboration Get Up!, he and Ben Harper played at the White House for President Obama and the First Lady, in a salute to Memphis soul. 2016 marked the 50th anniversary of Charlie’s debut album, the classic “Stand
Back! Here Comes Charlie Musselwhite’s South Side Band”, which he recorded at age 22. In addition to guest turns by Marty Stuart, Charlie Sexton, Dave Gonzales, Stefan Grossman, and G.E. Smith, and stints by Chicago greats Luther Tucker, Freddie Roulette, Louis Myers, and Fenton Robinson, his groups have been a virtual finishing school for guitar slingers, such as Robben Ford, Junior Watson, Tim Kaihatsu and Kid Andersen. But Charlie’s current band ranks with the best he’s ever had. It features drummer June Core, bassist Randy Bermudes, and guitarist Matt Stubbs. As for their bandleader, at 73 Charlie is truly at the top of his game, as evidenced by I Ain’t Lyin’, Henrietta Records’ follow-up to the Grammy nominated Juke Joint Chapel. In 2018 he won the Blues Music Awards’ Best Instrumentalist - Harmonica for a staggering 25th time; he’s had 29 wins overall and in 2010 was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. charliemusselwhite.com
