Rock Music Festival A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT The celebration of Canada’s 150 birthday this year is the perfect opportunity to honour some of the great music that comes from the land that we call home. In keeping with the spirit of celebrating our great nation, the Rock and Roll Society of Edmonton is thrilled to present you a fine lineup of exclusively Canadian artists to keep the party going. We love rock and roll and are committed to keeping the spirit alive through old-school favourites along with new and upcoming acts. We are also committed to supporting the community through our charitable music program at the Centre for Arts and Music (CAM). You may not realize it, but when you attend the Edmonton Rock Music Festival, you are supporting vulnerable youth in our city by giving them the opportunity to experience the arts while gaining a valuable music education. Now in our seventh year, CAM is helping to build confidence and other life skills these children need to flourish in all areas while playing in rock and roll bands. We hope you enjoy their show on Saturday night and visit the CAM tent to learn more about this amazing program. From all of us at the Rock and Roll Society of Edmonton, thank you for coming out and supporting our all-star Canadian lineup, terrific local acts, our CAM community program and live music. 5 Man

Electrical

Friday, August 18 6:00 pm–7:30 pm

Band

5 Man Electrical Band is a widely celebrated psychedelic rock group from Ottawa. Originally called The Staccatos, the group’s first big hit was 1967’s “Half Past Midnight,” which reached number eight on the Canadian music charts. In the early 1970s, the band changed its name to 5 Man Electrical Band and moved from Ontario to California. It wasn’t long before the American music industry and its heavyweights took notice of these five Canadians who had come to California to strike gold. The band began touring with groups like The Allman Brothers, Edgar Winter, Sly and the Family Stone and Rare Earth, sharpening their skills and preparing them to take on the world. And soon they did.

Today, Les Emmerson (guitar and vocals), Rick Smithers (bass and backing vocals), Brian Sim (guitar and backing vocals), Ted Gerow (keyboard and backing vocals) and Steve Hollingworth (drums, percussion and vocals) make up the group. 5 Man Electrical Band continues to play a few shows a year, appearing at venues across Canada and also contributes its talents to charitable causes. In 2014, the band teamed up with Friends of the Earth to record a new version of “Signs” called “Signs 4 Change,” which promotes awareness about environmental issues facing our planet today. ✪

In 1971 “Signs” exploded on American radio, soaring to number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song sold more than one million copies; it went to number one in Australia for two months, and was also huge in Canada and Europe. A string of hits followed, including “Absolutely Right,” “Money Back Guarantee,” “Moonshine (Friend of Mine),” “Werewolf” and “I’m a Stranger Here.” Over its five-decade-long career, 5 Man Electrical Band has released eight albums, starting with 1967’s A Wild Pair (The Staccatos), which was a collaboration with The Guess Who. The band’s most recent release was 2009’s Best of 5 Man. Many of the band’s songs have become staples of Canadian radio, being played alongside songs by Canadian rock legends like The Stampeders, April Wine, Bachman Turner Overdrive and The Guess Who. The band has influenced other artists, as well. American heavy metal band Tesla scored a huge hit covering “Signs.” In 2005, British big beat musician Fatboy Slim released the hit song “Don’t Let the Man Get You Down,” which was mostly based on this unforgettable opening line: And the sign said long-haired, freaky people need not apply. www.edrocks.ca

Tom Cochrane and Red Rider Friday, August 18 8:00 pm–10 pm This year marks a special milestone for legendary Canadian rocker Tom Cochrane—the 25th anniversary of his top-selling album Mad, Mad World. To celebrate, he’s released Mad, Mad World 25, a remastered deluxe edition of his diamond-certified album, and has hit the highway with long-time bandmates Red Rider. “The coolest thing about this is having Kenny Greer and Jeff Jones [original members of Red Rider] tour this record,” says Cochrane. “It’s like we’re 15-year-old kids playing in a garage, even though we’re playing in a stadium. We’re pumped before the show and we’re pumped after the show. On the tour bus we have some pops, everyone picks a song on their IPhone, and we play.”

Over the next decade, Cochrane and Red Rider recorded six studio albums together and released several hit songs, including “White Hot,” “Lunatic Fringe,” “Good Times,” “Boy Inside the Man” and “Big League.” In late 1991, Cochrane debuted as a solo artist when he released Mad, Mad World—and the album’s first single, “Life is a Highway.” The song was an instant success, rising to number one on the Canadian charts and reaching number six on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.

Cochrane was born in Lynn Lake, Manitoba and grew up in Ontario. As a young musician, Cochrane started his career playing in coffee houses and pubs around the province. Not yet earning a steady income from music, Cochrane took on all kinds of odd jobs—including driving a taxi, working on loading docks and working on a sailboat.

The album itself, which also included the hit songs “No Regrets,” “Sinking Like a Sunset,” “Washed Away,” “Bigger Man” and its title track, went on to sell about 1.7 million copies in Canada and about three million copies worldwide. The album also earned Cochrane four of his eight Juno Awards. “The record filled a niche at the time. There was a lot of grunge music out there, bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam (which I love), but songs like “Life is a Highway” and “No Regrets” filled a void. They were so positive; they provided a counter-balance to the other stuff.”

Everything changed in 1978 when Cochrane joined up-and-coming Canadian rock band Red Rider.

It’s been nearly 4 decades, 17 albums, 16 Canadian top 40 singles, and countless awards and accolades

since Cochrane started out in the Canadian music industry—and he’s still going strong. Cochrane and Red Rider—Greer on guitar and keyboard, and Jones on bass, along with Davide Derenzo on drums and Bill Bell on guitar—have a busy summer ahead of them, playing festivals across the country, including the Edmonton Rock Music Festival. “Edmonton is always a thrill to play. It was almost like a home base when I played with Red Rider. Edmonton has always supported us. It’s a heart-and-soul city and a great music town,” says Cochrane. With that in mind, Cochrane and Red Rider are ready to put on an exciting show in our city. “The show will be extra tight because we’ve been playing so many shows together,” says Cochrane. “The Edmonton show will be a little different than the Mad, Mad World 25 tour. I have 200 published songs, and I want to play more of them without sacrificing the 10 or 12 bigger hits we’re known for. There are also two or three songs from Mad, Mad World we’ll play that people haven’t heard live for a long time!” Sounds like Edmontonians are in for an amazing concert! ✪

Chronic Rock is a high-energy, rock and roll cover band that seamlessly delivers both modern and classic rock music. This quintet entered Edmonton’s local music scene in 2010, incorporating electric and acoustic guitars, drums, bass, keyboards, and multi-harmony vocals— all with a lead female vocalist that will knock your socks off! It’s no wonder Chronic Rock is still filling dance floors across the city seven years after they started. With an unwavering philosophy to perform only energetic cover tunes and to make sure each song sounds just like its original, Chronic Rock has made a name for itself as a favourite local cover band. The band is very selective in its song choices— choosing each song based on its energy level and ability to fill a dance floor. Aaron’s next album, 1985’s Call of the Wild, made its way up the charts in Canada and sold more than 100,000 copies in Europe in only six weeks. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Aaron released five more albums, which resulted in multi-platinum sales in Canada. In fact, Chart Magazine proclaimed 1989’s Bodyrock one of the 20 most influential Canadian albums of the 1980s. Aaron’s chart-topping rock hits such as “Only Human,” Whatcha Do to My Body,” “Hands On” and “Some Girls Do,” have solidified her as a Canadian rock superstar; however, Aaron has also ventured into other genres throughout her career. With two Juno Awards, millions of albums sold and a continuing legacy of sold-out shows, Prism defines success in Canadian classic rock music. Originally from Vancouver, Prism formed exactly 40 years ago in 1977. The band released its debut self-titled album that same year. The album was a huge success; it sold more than 100,000 copies in Canada, reaching platinum status, and included “Spaceship Superstar,” which has become the band’s signature song. In fact, in 2011, NASA chose “Spaceship Superstar” as the official song aboard the historic final flight of Space Shuttle Discovery, an orbiter from NASA’s Space Shuttle program that was in service for 27 years. Over the last four decades, Prism has released an incredible 17 albums: 13 studio albums, 3 compilation albums and 1 live album. Many of the band’s songs, which tend to mix album-oriented rock and pop rock, remain standards on Canadian rock radio to this day— “Take Me to the Kaptin,” “Flying,” “Armageddon,” “Take Me Away,” “Young and Restless,” “Night to Remember” and “Don’t Let Him Know.” Today, Prism still tours regularly. Band members Al Harlow (vocals and guitar), Tad Goddard (bass and vocals), Marc Gladsone (keyboard and vocals) and Gary Grace (drums) perform at festivals, sports arenas and theatres across the country. In 1992, Jordan performed a duet with Joe Cocker for the soundtrack of the major motion picture The Bodyguard; it sold 27 million copies worldwide. Next came Jordan’s third album, Rats. Saturday, August 19 4:45 pm–5:45 pm Juno Award-winning artist Sass Jordan has made her living singing, performing, writing and recording music internationally for the last three decades. A dynamic singer who grew up in Montreal, Jordan is well known for her blues-rock rasp and gritty blues-infused rock and roll, often drawing comparisons to artists such as Janis Joplin and Tina Turner. Jordan joined her first band after she learned to play bass guitar at 17 years old. Four years later, she left the band and started her solo career. In 1988, Jordan released her debut album Tell Somebody, which had three hit singles in Canada, “Double Trouble,” “Stranger Than Paradise” and the album’s title track. It was Jordan’s second album, Racine, that made her a huge international success. Released in 1992, Jordan named Racine after a little village east of Montreal where she spent her summers growing up. This year marks the 25th anniversary of that album, which includes the hit songs “Make You a Believer,” “I Want to Believe,” “Goin’ Back Again,” “You Don’t Have to Remind Me” and “Who Do You Think You Are.” To celebrate, Jordan has www.edrocks.ca

Not only is Jordan a talented singer, she’s also an accomplished actress. In 2001, she starred in a lead off-Broadway role, playing Janis Joplin in the hit show Love Janis. Jordan has also guest starred on NBC’s Sisters and CBC’s Corner Gas and was featured in The Vagina Monologues. In 2003, Jordan joined television blockbuster Canadian Idol as a judge and remained on the show for its entire run. Most recently, Jordan released her album From Dusk ’Til Dawn. Jordan says the album features songs and sounds that reflect southern California in the late 1970s. “I started out singing in Westmount Park, with my friends and a couple of acoustic guitars […]; passersby would stop and listen for a while as we honed our skills in public. Naturally, this type of vocal harmony and melodic sensibility is now a staple in my repertoire, and one I had a blast revisiting on this recording.” Jordan has concert dates set in Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario this summer. This fall she will tour throughout the Netherlands and Germany. ✪

Chilliwack went on to release 12 albums between 1970 and 1985 and performed regularly until 1988 when the band called it quits. In 1997, however, lead singer, guitarist, producer and songwriter, Bill Henderson, re-formed the band, and In 2003, Chilliwack released its most recent album There and Back—Live.

Saturday, August 19 6:45 pm– 8 pm

Much of Chilliwack’s success can traced to Henderson. Born in Vancouver, Henderson began earning a living as a musician while he was still in high school. Henderson studied music at the University of British Columbia before helping form The Collectors in 1966 and Chilliwack in 1970. Over the years, Henderson has also developed his talents as a record producer, producing recordings for many high-profile artists and winning a Juno Award in 1982 for producing Chilliwack’s tenth album, Opus X. Henderson has also been commissioned to direct and compose scores and songs for many theatre, film and television productions. In 1990, he won a Genie Award for best original song in a movie for “When I Sing” in Bye Bye Blues and was musical director for Sesame Street Canada from 1989 to 1985.

Chilliwack is one of Canada’s top recording acts. With hit songs like “Raino,” “Lonesome Mary,” “California Girl,” “Fly at Night,” “My Girl (Gone, Gone, Gone),” “I Believe,” “Baby Blue,” “Crazy Talk,” “Communication Breakdown” and “Whatcha Gonna Do,” the band has earned a host of awards and much international acclaim over the years. Performing as The Collectors in the late 1960s, the band’s first single, “Looking at a Baby,” quickly rose to number three in Canada. A few more singles later, The Collectors’ self-titled debut album became a PG 16

huge cult classic in North America, England, Germany and the Netherlands. The album influenced hundreds of artists with its daring originality. By 1970, the band had shifted focus and changed its name to Chilliwack. Chilliwack started with a progressive rock sound that incorporated folk, jazz and blues elements, which eventually evolved, picking up West Coast native influences (like in the song “Seventeenth Summer”). In fact, the word chilliwack is a first nations term, which means “valley of many streams.” Edmonton Rock Music Festival 2017

A champion and defender of musical creator’s rights, Henderson is also past president of SOCAN, is a founding member of the Artist Rights Coalition and was president of the Songwriters Association of Canada for five years. Today, Chilliwack’s music is still played on radio stations in Canada and the United States. The band’s current members—Bill Henderson, Ed Henderson (guitar and background vocals), Gord Matthews (bass and background vocals) and Jerry Adolphe (drums)—continue to tour together, playing concerts and outdoor festivals across Canada. ✪

Trooper isn’t called “Canada’s number one party band” for nothing. Decades of powerful performances, a timeless collection of classic party tunes and legions of loyal fans have earned the band this illustrious reputation in Canadian music. There’s no doubt Trooper has established itself as one of our country’s most celebrated rock bands. The group has held its place among Canada’s top rock acts year after year, cross-country tour after cross-country tour and sold-out show after sold-out show. And— even though it’s been nearly 40 years since it all began—this iconic Canadian band shows no sign of slowing down. Frontman Ra McGuire says it’s the fans who keep the band’s energy flowing, “We get most of our energy from the folks right in front of us! It’s exhilarating to perform for a great audience.” Maguire and guitarist Brian Smith founded Trooper in 1975. The band released its self-titled debut album that same year, which included megahits “Baby Woncha Please Come Home” and “General Hand Grenade.” After that, Trooper began touring extensively throughout Canada and the United States—and success has followed the group ever since. To date, Trooper has released 10 studio albums, some earning gold or platinum status in Canada. The band’s most successful release was 1979’s Hot Shots, a greatest hits compilation comprised of songs from its first five albums, including “The Boys in the Bright White Sports Car,” “We’re Here for a Good Time (Not a Long Time),” “Raise a Little Hell,” “Two for the Show,” “Oh, Pretty Lady” and “(It’s Been A) Long Time.” Hot Shots was the first album ever to go six-times platinum in Canada and is still one of Universal Music Canada’s best-selling catalogue records.

Saturday, August 19 8:30 pm–10 pm With a body of work this impressive, it’s no surprise the band has been recognized with multiple awards. In 1979, Trooper won a Juno Award for Band of the Year and earned two nominations for Album of the Year for Hot Shots and Flying Colours. Trooper has been awarded four SOCAN Classic Awards—one for each of its songs that has been played on Canadian radio more than 100,000 times: “We’re Here for a Good Time (Not a Long Time),” “Santa Maria,” “Two for the Show” and “Oh, Pretty Lady.” Most recently, McGuire and Smith were honoured with SOCAN’s National Achievement Award, which is a highly prestigious award that recognizes a songwriter’s significant contributions to Canadian music. But when it comes down to it, what really sets Trooper apart as a rock and roll band is its electrifying live performances. McGuire and Smith, along with bandmates Gogo (keyboard), Scott Brown (bass) and www.edrocks.ca

Clayton Hill (drums), still regularly tour throughout Canada, including stops in Edmonton. “Edmonton was, coincidentally, the very first place we played a big-time rock show,” says McGuire. “We’ve been back many, many times since and made lots of friends and fans. Also, we recorded our Flying Colours album there!” According to McGuire, Edmontonians are in for a party at Trooper’s upcoming performance, “We will attempt to mind-meld with our Edmonton brothers and sisters, and will proceed to create the best possible party… Outdoor shows are the best. There’s an extra element of us all being outside that makes it more party-like. Like we started out with a barbecue and were having so much fun that we all just started singing songs.” It certainly sounds like Trooper is ready to do what they do best and “Raise a Little Hell” with their fans at the Edmonton Rock Music Festival! ✪ PG 17
