The inspiration of Motion Space derives from my passion for badminton. As I gradually became skillful at this sport, I came to notice that every hit at the shuttlecock constructs a conspicuous different movement curve in the air. Multiple factors come into play to determine the movement of the object, such as the moment of contact with the ball, the angle of the racket, the power in the arms, etc. In this project I present various techniques in the badminton game on a sheet of paper using curves with multiple degrees of intensity. I have carefully marked the pendulum curve of the arm when serving, which indicates the magnitude of the shuttlecock’s initial velocity. As for the velocity directions, they are represented by the tangent to the trajectory.
Next thing I do is to cut the paper in accordance to the trajectories and create various shapes. Then I combine these shapes to produce a space made by curves.

Dou Gong, an ancient Chinese architectural element, is the basic and most important structure with great complexity in the construction of large scale architectures. When visiting the buildings constructed in different dynasties, I became interested in the development of this technique.
I chose two representative styles of Dou Gong in Song and Qing dynasty. Then I deconstructed the structures into pieces and analyzed their differences.
Dougong in Song's style
Dougong in Qing's style
Dougong in Song's style
Dougong in Qing's style
The structure of Mortise and tenon joint is simple and the number of its components is less.
The structure of Gong develops from detachable pieces to a whole one, which would require more materials and proven skills.
The structure for connection changes, which increase the stability.
The number of beams increases and the position changes.
From Song to Qing, 3 changes are prominent. Firstly, the structure of Dou Gong is simplified, many components are altered or removed. Then, each components become larger, especially the components like Dou in the center. Moreover, the designer pay more attention to the ornamental value of Dou Gong. Many components develop decorative portions. These changes indicate that after years of development, the carpenters became more skillful and there are more materials available for construction. Thus, instead of constructing in a more structural design like Song’s, Qing’s Dou Gong design Dou Gong in a more

Last year I went to Suzhou for travelling, and I visited the Zhuozheng Garden, one of the biggest and most famous Chinese garden. The garden is located inside the city. It is like a dedicate room that contains all the beauty of nature, which inspire me to describe the garden by creating spaces.
In the garden, the views reminded me of many Chinese idioms. Then, I chose 6 representative idioms and create different spaces based on my understanding towards them.
The next step I do is combine the characteristics of these spaces which represent the idioms. Consequently I create an abstract model of the Chinese Garden
