Sounds Of Syracuse

by CHUCK SCHIELE

The Sound of Wonderland According to Irv Lyons, Jr. Seems to me the Syracuse music scene is ramping up. I see more music events nudging into the calendar, such as the Vinyl series, Beatle’Cuse (April 2nd), PettyFest (April 23). I see more people going to shows. This year, the SAMMY awards reported a record-breaking number of original music entries. It’s like Christmas day for me, when I see more people digging into the arts. So, this month we’re going to talk a bit about a new release from the very notable Irv Lyons Jr., called Wonderland. Two things I like best about this record: 1. It is paramount that an artist understands that the whole thing is about having a “thing,” and understanding it. Right? Like... Elvis could sing about 6 notes and grind his hops like the devil. Dylan could sing 1.5 notes but brought validation to the rock lyric. Both these guys understood their “thing.” And from that they forged a very strong matter-of-style. After all, matter-of-style is the thing that makes us resonate with the groups that we do. akin to walking a tight-rope, its risky business. Get it right and its amazing result. Miss by a little bit and its a long way down, from there.

VOTED BEST ASIAN RESTAURANT 10 YEARS IN A ROW!

Irv Lyons Jr.’s Wonderland is about sonic adventure. The arrangements and musicianship are stellar. The writing is good and relevant. It is an ambitions adventure utilizing the studio, lightly, as an instrument itself. Wonderland possesses a very overt matter of style. And I dig it. There’s an urban sheen present here, even on the tune that would otherwise be rendered in their traditions. Whether its an R.&B. number or a Latin groove or roots, rap, moments, or rock, it all holds together well with this uptown attitude in he production.

Which brings me to number two: Much of the spirit of this record is about sonic adventure. The arrangements and musicianship are stellar. The writing is good and relevant. But, sonically, Irv Lyons Jr. and company (which is a short who’s-who list of great Syracuse musicians...) dabble in a variety cultural origins, but, the production handling of the sound—thanks, in part to Jeff Moleski—is an ambitions adventure utilizing the studio, lightly, as an instrument itself. The title-track skips along in a hip-hoppish groove in an R.&B. setting. “Hypnotized” takes a step to the left in its elegant trppiness. “Be My Baby (Remix)” is my favorite tune of the album, because it flat out kicks ass in its cool-dark-weird hard-rock, tribalness... the sound of this song is in its own unique place. Another favorite is “I Love the Night (Remix).” A song that would be blasting away in the mexican dance clubs I used to visit on occasion around 3am when the arty really kicks in. The cool little twilight Zoneesque guitar lick irreverently finds its way into the mix in. Together, along with some fun on the mixing console, this tune also sits freshly in its own place. There are several tunes on this CD that are latin-based in a way that Santana fans will enjoy. There are even a coupla straight-up rockers that are sure to make 5 or so chickies put their drinks down, get out of their seats to invade the dance floor. I know you know you know those five chickies I’m talking about who always get the party started. I’ll leave it at that, so you can discover the rest of the goodies yourself. Altogether, its a bic-flicker of an album with a totally fun credit list of groovy players. I’ve seen Irv a few times over the last couple of months at the open jam at Limp Lizard Liverpool where he’s part of the house band. And what follows, here is a short chat I had with him.

Chuck Schiele: Hello, Irv. Share with us the inspiration for the album and the material on it. Irv Lyons Jr.: The CD is about love. Stories in my mind. Capsules of moments that I envisioned everyone experiencing. Some personal. Some from other people and some fictional. A CD of stories of love. CS: I heard you on the radio a lot over this past summer with Dave Frisina.... Lacrosse... Nation.... Music.... Please elaborate for those who didn’t catch the radio bits with Dave. IL: I co-host with Dave Frisina and Brett Bucktooth on The Rebel 105.9, Fridays at 4:00 starting mid March. The show is Red Hawks Friday. We use the show to promote Onondaga Red Hawks Lacrosse team and the Onondaga

Nation Arena. It also provides an insight into the Haudenosaunee Culture. Some of our previous guests on the air were: Mayor Stephanie Miner, County Exec Joanie Mahoney, Oren Lyons, Coach John Desko, Jim Brown, The Thompson Brothers, Alfie Jacques, Rex Lyons and Charlie Lockwood. CS: You fall into the category of “seasoned pro.” How did you get started in music? When did you know you wanted to be a musician? IL: I always knew I wanted to be a musician. From my earliest memory. My mother had an awesome record collection. I wore those records out. Ray Charles, Fats Domino, Johnny Burnette, Elvis, Johnny Cash and Little Richard. I picked up a guitar at 5 and never put it down. I played in garage bands in high school and moved on up.

CS: If you could keep only one guitar in your collection. Which one would it be? IL: My American Standard Fender Stratocaster. CS: You recently received an award. Tell us about your accolades. IL: I have won a SAMMY and been nominated for a NAMMY with The Ripcords. The latest win is an Akademia Music Award for best Rock/R&B album. And put it down. thank you for your service. Back to the seasoned pro thing: What would be your advice for new musicians approaching the music business? IL: Practice, practice, practice. What I mean is to know your instrument, to play it well and carefully select who you play with. Make sure that you all get along . Don’t just play covers... write originals. Develop your own style. The bottom line is if you can’t play with passion... then don’t bother playing music. Music is sacred, so keep it sacred. CS: Amen. You’ve earned a lot of notoriety in CNY as a musician. What do you have to say about the CNY music scene? IL: I think there are many brilliant musicians in Syracuse and Central New York. The way I see it... the squeaky wheel gets the oil around here. The same bands and players get the same gigs. There is an inner sanctum here in Syracuse. If you are not a part of it, you slip through the cracks. It’s a shame. Covers is what’s praised and adored. Originals not so much. CS: Oh my God! Why is that? Makes me nuts.... IL: So I think Syracuse could be an even better place for music if they were to embrace all of their musicians, but I have no control over this. The people who put on shows and book bands... it’s up to them. Otherwise, you may never get to hear some of these great players. CS: Yeah... I feel that those kinds of things deter the growth and keeps things small. Its weird to me since none of the heroes in our record collection got where they did by thinking that way. Soooooo, hm. What do you think might make the CNY music scene better? IL: I think there needs to be a paradigm shift. The same people who book bands and festivals have their favorites. The same artists always play these concerts... so we need to look at the musicians we know are out there, but don’t get booked. We need to embrace those artists and bands that are on the fringe before we loose them. People check out when they are not included or made welcome. I think that’s what is really happening and I think that’s bullshit. CS: I agree. I can’t imagine having the only the Coke or Pepsi menu continued on pg 42

10 Cloverfield Lane Prior to the release of the original CLOVERFIELD in 2008, the project had been veiled in a shroud of secrecy. Aside from a teaser trailer and a number of hidden websites that were all part of a giant marketing in-game that was directly linked to the film, audiences were left guessing as to what exactly caused Lady Liberty’s head to go bouncing down the streets of New York City. Audiences soon discovered that the movie, directed by Matt Reeves and produced by JJ Abrams, was a found-footage thriller that delivered a unique spin on the Monster genre. Though CLOVERFIELD was hardly the first flick to use the first-person, handheld camera technique to heighten realism and terrify its audience in an unconventional way, it did help usher in an era where this plot ploy became very commonplace in the cinematic world. CLOVERFIELD was, and still remains, one of my favorite horror films of the past decade. It was refreshing, exhilarating, and left me wanting more. Rumors have swirled for years about the possibility of a sequel, and Abrams had stated on more than one occasion that there were still more stories to tell within the CLOVERFIELD universe. Despite these proclamations, there was never any substantial updates on the progress of any supposed sequel,

The Write Stuff by NANCY ROBERTS

Philip Vickers Fithian A Plantation Tutor of the Old Dominion Philip Vickers Fithian: A Plantation Tutor of the Old Dominion,1773 - 1774; Edited by: Hunter Dickenson Farish History, as the saying goes, is written by the victors. These days, it seems that history is not just written but re-written as the demands of the times warrant. Continue to be shocked how much “the story” changes from one generation to the next, depending upon who is in favor, and who is out, both in a scholarly sense and a political one. Take The Crusades, for example. What you “know” about them depends upon your politics, age, religion, and general outlook on life, rather than anything we know or don’t about those times. And of course, because it is so far back in time, the story is even more hazy than something

that occurred 10-30 years ago. Even then, my mom is fond of saying, “Wuz you there, Charlie?” I’m not exactly sure who originated the expression, but at least in my family it means, “I lived during that time, and you didn’t, so don’t presume to tell me something I know to be false.” It will be interesting to see what happens to “history” going forward, given the ubiquitousness of cell phone cameras, video tape, and Internet publishing. (More about this subject of what is “real” in video will be dealt with in my computers and technology column for this month!) I have a friend who studied (for reasons I will never quite understand) “old” Spanish, translating texts from a Medieval form of the language to modern English, and learning about the history of Spain from, as it were, those who “wuz there.” And in truth, for me, this is the only way to read history: from those who were writing about their own lives and times. Granted, we all carry with us the prejudices and biases of our native country, language, social class, and other factors - and even though you may be reading something written at that time, it may still have a slant. But it’s as close as we’re likely to get to “what really happened.” In this case, the “story” is the diary of a young man who, upon completing is own education, accepts a position as a tutor to the children of a wealthy Virginia planter. The year is 1773-1774, just before the Colonies declared independence from England. And, in fact, one of the more interesting parts of the volume is that it contains little to nothing about the brewing anger and rebelliousness of the Colonials. What it does deal with in great detail is the young man’s life, times, and fortunes. As he relates them, he reveals a great deal about the times. (And perhaps, the fact that the simmering rebellion is not mentioned is telling in an of itself.) Young Philip Fithian is not exactly a fun sort of young man - and a good deal of that is explained by the fact that he is quite religious, and is only interrupting his study for the ministry with his brief sojourn as a tutor. Philip has studied Latin (Lattin, occasionally) and Greek; he knows mathematics and rhetoric and music - all the things a well-brought-up young man of his era should, and, as he is studying for a life of prayer and preaching, he is in a position to impart some of his learning to his young pupils. The young people in question are both boys and girls, ranging in age from 6 or 7 to the teens. They live in Virginia on a wealthy plantation, to which place Philip travels, noting his expenses (very specifically) and accommodations along the way. Before leaving his hometown of Deerfield, Philip dithers about taking the position: it will delay his entry into the ministry; he will have to leave his “Laura,” a young woman who has caught his fancy; he is not certain he will like the less

sophisticated life on a southern plantation; he is not certain he likes or wants to be engaged in tutoring young people at all. Finally, he agrees to test the waters, and sets out on his adventure. Travel at that time isn’t for sissies. Time on the road is dirty, disagreeable, uncomfortable, and evidently, no cheap. (Money is still accounted for in the old English system of pounds, guineas, and pence, and Philip takes great pains to keep a record of how much and to whom he must pay: oats, bed, meal, drink, ferry boats, and so on.) But the inducements of the job are significant: he isn’t a man of great fortune or family, and like his female counterparts (well brought up but not wealthy) he finds he must do something to earn his keep (women typically became governesses if they needed to support themselves in a genteel manner). The position allows for a room and meals, a horse “kept,” as well as pay - which, despite most of his physical needs being cared for, he must piece out to servants and tavern keepers, launderers and haberdashers.

He also mentions the “Negro” slaves, a thing he disapproves of, being a Northerner, yet comes to accept as he finds they are not illtreated in general, or at least, on this particular plantation. And he adjusts to the idea that a measure of a man’s wealth is partly displayed by his servants and how well he treats them. It is in these passing details that one discovers the history of a time learning how something as heated as the subject of slavery was to become, and continues to this day to be, was tolerated and even somewhat ignored by the wealthier classes. How What else do we learn from Philip’s diaries? religion figured so much more in the • Ill health was not uncommon, and people fretted over even a slight cold, day to day life of a Northern man as anything could lead to a mortal affliction; than a Southern one (Philip learns • People kept hours not unlike ours - he “arises” at 6 or 7, and “to bed” at 10-11; that skipping Church on Sunday is The Diary of Philip K. As noted, Philip doesn’t seem to be much taken up with the political scene, nor with the chance of a rebellion - even when he is in Virginia, where young George Washington had a plantation himself. He comments on manners; behavior (one of his charges is a very spoiled and willful young man) and the necessity for chastisement of his young pupils; music; health and weather; clothing and appearance; Godliness; and to whom he dedicates his toasts (usually one of the better looking young ladies). He details visits to and from others in the area, both for an 7 evening or for a week or more: having new company and conversation was very important in a life lacking in much in the way of diversion.

Word on the Street by BILL MCCLELLAN

Heroes of the Forsaken Huntington Family Centers There is a very nasty word, more devastating than any vulgarity that deprives individuals of the ability to grow with values, confidence and hope. This word is the home of deprivation, heartache, and worse yet, youthful hopelessness and depression. The word is “Poverty”. In every city and nearly every town in America there are large, yet isolated neighborhoods where human suffering is rampant and seldom discussed in the mainstream world. Tragically in America they have become outcast and apart from social structures that provide good lives. Such pain should not exist on this huge scale in America. Millions with beautiful heart and hope no different than you and I should not be so avoided. Effort to fix this is sublimated and scarce. In the eyes of every poor inhabitant you can see the query of hope. Whenever they encounter one they think they might respect, the question can be clearly seen in eyes that have suffered great scarcity of all that is good. Multi-Deprivation, violence, and fear have been their path. Their humble query is clear: “So much is wrong, can

you show me the way”? Enter, an organization where real heroes reign. In May of 1919 Huntington Club was founded to help women who moved to Syracuse to work in the factories that allowed us to win WWI. While their husbands and sons were at war they saw to it that the logistics to win were constantly in place. Nothing was more vital than this mission. Shelter and support services were provided by Huntington Club to these women at Snow House located at 476 South Warren Street in Syracuse. The Huntington Club continued to evolve and in the 1940’s with help from “The Community Chest”, now “The United Way” turned its attention toward a supportive climate for the community and its families. In 1957, the agency adopted the name Huntington Family Centers and began operating Settlement House programs. The Settlement Movement was a reformist social movement beginning in the 1880s and peaking around the 1920s in England and the United States with a goal of getting the rich and poor in society to live more closely together in an interdependent community. Its main object was to locate in poor urban areas. Volunteer middle class settlement workers would live on location. They would provide services such as daycare, education and healthcare to improve and share knowledge and culture with the goal of alleviating the poverty of, their low income neighbors. In February 1964, Huntington moved to its present location at 405 Gifford Street in Syracuse. In Syracuse Mary Lou Sayles is the Executive Director of the Huntington Family Center and Amy Crawford is the Program Director. Along with a small staff, and continued collaboration with the United Way, miracles are achieved every day. One on one, wherever there is need, 365 days a year. Over the years thousands born with little hope in severe poverty, with the services offered by Huntington Family Center have crossed that cultural bridge and have ended the cycle of suffering for their posterity. Generations of health and happiness are now underway. Poverty consolidates and is a place deprived of power. The cultural divide is great and tragically negligent, and provides few bridges to help the deprived achieve better lives. It is the heroes with compassion and advocacy that bring hope. They provide bridges and they show the way. Huntington Family Center provides the heart, the tools and the path that often ends this cycle within families. With hope and deed provided through Huntington confidence, character and esprit de corps are greatly continued on pg 16

No matter what you have at Marcella’s be sure to save room for dessert. The Panna Cotta is made fresh and the flavor changes daily! We went to Marcella’s on a mild Wednesday evening. We were immediately seated by our friendly server. She explained that the authentic cuisine was made to order and answered all of our questions. We decided to begin our meal with an order of the Fried Calamari (Calamari fitti), a large helping of delicious and tender calamari tossed in semolina flour and fried, finished with a pinch of salt and a twist of lemon and served with homemade marinara sauce. You could taste the freshness in every bite and it was perfectly seasoned. For an entrée Derry decided on the Eggplant Parmigiana (Melanzane alla parmigiana) served with a marinara sauce. The thinly sliced and lightly friend eggplant was complemented perfectly by the marinara sauce. For my entrée I decided on the Peppered Mussels (Pepata di cozze), a huge dish of fresh black mussels sautéed in a lightly peppered garlic wine sauce served over homemade linguine. The dish reminded me of something you would eat while gazing into the Mediterranean. The mussels were perfectly complemented by the pepper and garlic. For dessert we decided to split a cannoli. Cayuga Lake Wine Trail Releases New Mobile App After months of work with the very talented team at Madden Media, the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail (CLWT) is proud to announce their new mobile application. The app’s primary function is to serve as a wayfinding tool for those navigating the Trail. Available on both Apple and Android operating systems, it’s the visitor’s digital guide to all sixteen member wineries, and more. Upon opening the app, each winery has its own designated page which showcases their tasting room and information such as business hours, contact information, dining options and additional offerings like guided winery tours or live music series. The winery menu also has a live feed for each winery’s current hours, indicating which are open, and until what hour. This is especially useful during the winter, when some locations shorten their hours of operation or close for a day during the middle of the week. Individual winery listings are also integrated with the business’ social media. Fans can check in, like, comment or tweet about their experiences on Facebook and Twitter. Bring On the Death Panels One of the things I hear patients talk about when they mention Obamacare is the “death panels”..as they sneer these words they look to me for some knowing and indignant nod of agreement at this latest oppressive government outrage. Unfortunately, they are again disappointed in me because I stop them in their tracks when I intone…”We need the death panels...the death panels are a very good idea...I’m all about the death panels !” The term “death panel” conjure up some white coated tribunal of indifferent doctors ..hired guns as it were ...strangers who will choose who lives and who dies. Which grandma still has a little life in her yet. Whom to refuse fourth line chemotherapy. Which sick little baby will be tossed off the side of the mountain as the ancient Spartans used to do with children who The term “death panel” conjure up some did not seem whole and well. You will be as well once I have explained things from my standpoint. When you really think about it, and I don’t blame you if you haven’t been preoccupied with this subject... who better than to decide on your medical fate than a professional medical team of independent experts. This isn’t about the death panel randomly picking out people at Destiny USA for harvesting like some grim reaper Halloween pageant. This whole issue is about what to do at the end of meaningful productive life. This is about not torturing Grandma during her final days despite the well meant desires of their family. This is not just about what makes economic sense. Frankly I think economics should not factor into the equation in any way shape or form at all but you can’t be ignorant of the financial issues. WNET news reports that “Medicare, the health insurance program for the elderly, spends nearly 30 percent of its budget on beneficiaries in their final year of life. Slightly more than half of Medicare dollars are spent on patients who die within two months.” That’s a staggering amount of money and sadly it’s usually poorly spent. Way too many grandmas spend their last few days on Earth in some oddly lit room full of strangers and stranger equipment...often tied up to the bed or some equipment , sedated lest they pull on their life support. Really? Is it Real, or is it After Effects? By now most of us has seen how Gollum in Lord of the Rings was created, using registration points and a green screen. What, you say? In case you really haven’t heard how it works, it’s just this: a man dresses up in a green body suit. Registration point are added to critical places on his body and face. He then acts out the role of the creature he is performing as. Finally, a “skin” is layered over that, providing the look of the Gollum, or orc, or other non-human creature. This is the technology that has replaced the old animation, miniatures, and bulky (and fake-looking) costumes. A great deal has been written about Leonardo DiCaprio’s dance with a grizzly in The Revenant, in which his character is supposedly mauled by a great bear - but which ended up looking a bit more like the bear took an unnatural interest in Leo. Still, the “reality” of the bear was far more exquisite than a simple bear costume could have been.

But technologically speaking, there have been some amazing advances in making a fictional creature come to life using animation or CGI (graphics). Adobe After Effects has moved the bar still further by enabling almost “real time” performance of a real human being using this same “registration points” or “puppet points” as Adobe labels them approach. The frightening challenge is that it can be done quickly, using a real person An actor wearing a motion capture on video tape (withbody suit. out even their consent or knowledge), and almost flawlessly - you want Donald Trump to say something horrible, or make a dumb face, and then pass it off on the Internet as the real thing? Not that difficult these days. The merging of real and “adjusted” material has been slowly emerging over the last few years. Take, for example, the recent spate of “what really happened” video that people have been enjoying sparring over on comboxes on the Internet. Who punched and kicked whom? What was really going on, on that drone video, or dashcam? Two or three or a dozen angles (taken on cell continued on pg 29

Step Into Spring With Pops of Color Spring is finally in the air! Of course, we’ve been dealing with some pretty chilly weather for the last few months, so we’ve been bundled in up in warm neutral clothes, rather than strutting our stuff in out favorite outfits. As the warm weather approaches, it’s time to start dressing like ourselves again and to celebrate the sunny season by mixing some pops of color back into your look. You don’t have to wear color all over to fit in this spring, just touches here and there are enough to bring you out of your winter blues. It’s not so hard once you know how to do it. So try sneaking in some springy details with these five easy tips.

1. Add a Statement Bag Accessories are a great way to add color into your outfit without going overboard. Try carrying a cobalt blue tote or a neon pink clutch. Colorful bags are great for days when you want to keep the rest of your outfit neutral but still want to make a statement.

2. Swipe On Some Bright Lipstick

Add a statement bag or swipe on some Bright Lipstick for a pop of color this spring!

I’m a huge lipstick lover, so this one is a must for me. During springtime I love to keep a bright coral or a fun berry shade in my purse to just swipe on and go. Try a few colors and switch them up every day so you don’t get stuck in a makeup rut. The more you experiment, the more fun you’ll have. continued on pg 30

The Health of the Body Politic When the 1787 United States’ Constitutional Convention concluded, Benjamin Franklin told a woman outside of Independence Hall that she and the rest of the citizens of the United States now had “a republic . . . if you can keep it.” While we speak of our government as a democracy, we are a republic with, for the most part, democratically elected representatives in a tripartite division of power designed to provide checks and balances. The people democratically elect the House of Representatives and the Senate, and the people elect the electors who elect the president. The President nominates justices for the Su-

In a country where scientists can build antennae capable of hearing whispers from the past one billion light years away, we currently have some leaders who forget that it was “the people” who, recently, twice elected President Obama whose nominee to the Supreme Court these leaders would like to completely dismiss in the alleged interest “the people.” There are people, and then there are other people, I guess. Half the body politic is female and that half is still weighed down by medical models and socioeconomic systems developed for men. I finished this article after returning from the Vera House White Ribbon Campaign breakfast where a young college woman spoke of keeping quiet about her own sexual victimization because she felt it must have been her fault. Other speakers, men, acknowledged societal gender bias and suggested men need to speak out against bias and violence against women. My low self-esteem grew out a gender-biased, traditional neighborhood based school of hard knocks, pretty typical in general, specifically bad for me. Vitamin malabsorption and a head injury impaired my ability to quickly and adequately address new situations. Like many students today, I felt fear walking to and from school. I gained insight into the pervasive way gender stereotypes affect everyone, but mostly women, when I studied anthropology at SU. I value ongoing learning. The cost of education is a hot topic this election season and while it’s true that college is increasingly unaffordable for many students, promises of free college won’t benefit students who can’t get through high school. Early environmental trauma including poverty, poor nutrition, injury and illness, leads to ongoing problems that most heavily affect poor children. Poorer children drop out sooner with lower literacy. Solid foundational literacy empowers people to find better ways to live, cook, eat, stay healthy, earn and manage money, maintain healthy relationships, and maybe, seek higher education. Higher education is the key to a better life only after one has one’s basic needs for food and shelter met. We need jobs with good wages and the wages people earn reflect have/have not polarization. A top paid CEO in the USA now earns 450 times what the lowest paid employee earns. Whether one is Democrat or Republican, one has to notice that much political energy is coalescing around some narrow views. When group polarization pulls too much from the center, moderate people disengage. When moderates disengage, the polarizers predominate. Extreme polarization pulls things apart. Our body politic is being strained. To avoid stress fractures and other bad stuff, we need to strengthen our core.

Step Into Spring With Pops of Color continued from pg 25

3. Slip On Some Cute Flats

Forget the snow boots, it’s time to start wearing cute shoes again. A bright orange pair of sandals or some fun yellow flats look great with any outfit. They’re perfect for work or running errands, plus they’re comfy so you’ll want to wear them all the time.

4. Wear Color All Over

It’s finally warm enough to wear a dress, so pick something bright and colorful, then pair it with matching shoes or a jacket. Wear a lipstick in a similar shade and you’ve got an adorable monochromatic look. You’ll get tons of compliments on your style because everyone else is probably still wearing all black.

5. Paint Your Nails

It’s finally warm enough to wear a dress, so pick something bright and colorful, then pair it with matching shoes or a jacket.

Nail polish comes in hundreds of awesome colors, so chose your favorites. Pastels and neons work for spring because they’re eye catching without looking too intense. Paint all ten nails the same color, or try some nail art if you’re really feeling creative.

Are You A Gym Rat? The “Gym Rat” often otherwise known as the Gym Bunny, Gym Unicorn, or the Musclehead is referred to as one who spends entirely too much time partaking in muscle building, strength training, cardiovascular, or aerobic activity. Specifically, this refers to someone who does so at a health club or gym. Often used derogatorily by people who do not partake in or understand this lifestyle, some self-proclaimed gym rats use the term as a status symbol or for positive reinforcement. 1989, Larry Bird, Drive: The Story of my Life, page 42 I was a real “gym rat.” I’d go home and eat, then come back to the gym and play some more. I mean, I practically lived in that gym. • 1995, David Rabe, “A Primitive Heart” • This gym rat dripping tattoos in a sweatshirt with the sleeves ripped off was brooding at the juke box, like it had just asked him a very difficult question that he was determined to answer. • 1998, Arnold Schwarzennegger, The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding, page 672

Are You a Gym Rat? continued from pg 31

Gym rats are the people you see at the gym ALL the time. It’s like whenever you step into the gym, they’re there. When you leave, they’re there. Whether it’s five am in the morning or ten pm at night (when the gym is almost completely empty), they are there. The gym rat is arguably the GREATEST rat of all. He or she is goal-oriented, strong, fast as a bullet, and knows the best order and time of day for working a room full of complicated machinery. Pumping iron, burning calories, sweating it out and looking quite impressive while doing it all is just another day at the office for the Gym Rat. Have you ever caught yourself saying, “Oh Gym, you’re all I need, Gym I can’t wait to see you, I love Gym, or I must go, my Gym needs me!” Do you find yourself missing the burn, the wobbly feeling after hitting leg day, the gym zone (where the headphones go in and everyone and everything else disappears), and the euphoric feeling you get after a five mile run? If you dream of chalk, dumbbells, kettlebells, wife beaters, the treadmill, and balls of all shapes, sizes and colors; you’ve got it bad. Your gym partners said it, your friends have said it and even your significant other has said it. You’re addicted to the gym. Don’t worry though, it’s not something to be ashamed of, rather it’s something to be proud of! You are the member of an exclusive club, a subgroup of people, feared by the rest of mankind for your freakish strength and aversion to ice cream. Below is the official list of signs and symptoms. If over half of them pertain to you, well then, it’s fair to suggest that you are part gym rodent and a full on workout wonder. In other words, you’re a Gym Rat. • You know the ENTIRE gym staff’s work schedule. They know your full name (middle included), job and birth date.

If you dream of chalk, dumbbells, kettlebells, wife beaters, the treadmill, and balls of all shapes, sizes and colors; you may be a Gym Rat.

• You know you should take a day off, but can’t stay away. (I’ll just go in and stretch, ride the bike or just sit outside and drink my coffee) • You have more workout clothes than regular clothes. • You take more showers at the gym than at home. • You have a “designated” parking spot. • If you haven’t been to the gym in 24 hours you get cranky. • You post weekly selfies of you and your protein shakes.

Vidiots by BRIAN MILLER

Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday When it comes to writing reviews, there comes a time or two where I feel the need to lay all of my cards out on the table. As much as I try to avoid all preconceived notions, expectations, and hopes of a production, sometimes this is simply impossible. Consider this a fair warning, because this is one of those times where it is impossible for me to remain fully objective. As a child of the 80’s, I have a particular fondness for Pee-Wee Herman. Not only did I enjoy PEE-WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE and his ground-breaking Saturday morning extravaganza known as PEE-WEE’S PLAYPEE-WEE’S BIG HOLIDAY- B HOUSE, but that affinity has stretched well into adulthood. In fact, thanks to Netflix, I was able to introduce the PLAYHOUSE to my children, who seem to enjoy Pee-Wee’s over-the-top antics as much as I do. For decades now, there has been talk of a Pee-Wee revival. Paul Reubens, the comedic genius who unleashed the silly, nasally, and immature man-child upon the world, has openly stated that it was only a matter of time before he donned the gray suit and red bowtie once again. Despite a highly successful stage show that began a limited run in 2010, it has been 25 years since Reubens has created a new Pee-Wee installment in either television or film. This all changed on March 18, 2016, when PEEWEE’S BIG HOLIDAY premiered on Netflix. The biggest fear I (or any Pee-Wee fan, I would imagine) had, was whether or not Reubens would be able to step right back into the swing of things, and breathe new life into a character that has been gone for so long. Thankfully, he hasn’t lost a single step. From HOLIDAY’s earliest continued on pg 40

rolling on this subject, but, this is your interview. What groups might you recommend to a visitor looking for music in Syracuse? Who’s on Irv’s radar? IL: Some under the radar musicians that I think are brilliant are: George Newton, Morris Tarbell, Brownskin, Diana Jacobs Band, Joe Henson, Honky Tonk Hindooz, Amerikan Primitive, Johnny and the Stone Throwers, Richie Melito and Modus Operandi. CS: Who do you listen to for inspiration and influence? IL: I go back to the basics. Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Steely Dan, Clapton, The Stones and my new band of choice, Robert Glasper Experiment. If I really want to get out there Miles Davis will always make me think 180 degrees opposite of what I’m thinking. Miles Davis always said... “don’t play what’s there, play what’s not there.” CS: I still learn from Miles. What’s in the near future for Irv Lyons Jr.? IL: Changing the strings on my Strat. CS: Haha... heh...you guitar players....Tell us where we can keep in touch with your music? As I mentioned in my book review this month, history has been written by the victors - so we go to original material and even unimportant material, to get a sense of what people were really thinking and feeling 100 or 200 years ago. Now, we can, with little expense or effort, and no cooperation, get just about anyone to say just about anything. Only they didn’t... Did they?

Of course there is the risk that these oversight doctors will be incentivized to cut short care to reign in finances but what we have now is just as bad….No cost control whatsoever and even worse ...no routine evaluation of the appropriateness of care. You rightly fear a government that will devalue lives but I see every day where we , from an understandable combination of love and regret and fear , put our loved ones through procedures that rob them of their dignity and deny them a comfortable reflective peaceful passing. We can do better...we must do better and the Death Panel conversation is a good place to start. If this article does nothing else but get you to make sure Momma has a Health Care Proxy and someone both knows what Momma wants but has the strength to carry out HER wishes then I have been of service... A panel of independent doctors could evaluate the situation and the patient and weigh in on the appropriate use of advanced life support. They would never have the last say in what happens to the patient but they would determine whether insurance should pay for the care.

additional minute. Remove from heat and set aside. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, then add cheese, chicken, and the vegetables from the skillet. Stir to combine, then pour into the prepared pie dish. Bake 40 minutes, until the center is nearly set and a toothpick inserted comes out clean. The frittata will puff while baking, then settle a bit as it cools. Let sit 5 minutes then serve warm or at room temperature.
