B-Side. As the name suggests, this is a band that takes a familiar theme—in their case blues and rock—and then makes unobvious choices within that scope. And in this case.... such is the case. With a penchant for that which is irreverent, eclectic and unsuspecting, B-Side has set sail in metered time with a sound that is both fresh and familiar. Incepted last November, the band is comprised of notable Syracuse musicians with a history of rocking our fair city, for years, in association with some of the bigger bands in the area. Brew Time

Desination Vermont A Craft Beer Lover’s Paradise The eighth month of the year, August marks the end of summer as we know it in Central New York. Back-to-school sales are everywhere, pumpkin and Oktoberfest beers are already on the shelves, and the sounds of children splashing water will soon be an echo. In spite of dreaming of a longer season or hoping one more day will stay above 70, August is still summer filled with many things we look forward to, like the New York State Fair. August is also a great time for another road trip...to Vermont. Just four hours away to Middlebury and five to Burlington, it’s an easy drive and a craft beer lover’s destination. Growing up, the only things I had direct experience with from The Green Mountain State were maple syrup and cheese. Both delicious and worthy of a visit in and of themselves, I didn’t know much other than what my friends had told me about this beautiful state. The first Vermont craft beer I tried was from Long Trail (from Bridgewaters Corners). I liked it well enough, but not enough to pique my curiosity about what this small state had to offer. It

Last July I took a trip to Burlington to attend the Vermont Brewers Festival. I immediately knew that I wanted to return for a proper visit to explore more of this beautiful state and what their breweries have to offer.

wasn’t until I attended more and more beer fests in Central New York that I noticed how popular Vermont beers were with our local aficionados. The Alchemist was an enigma, and its Heady Topper was a silver can that would turn grown men and women into children wanting that golden ticket in their Willy Wonka bar. Sure, I had read beer reviews on this mighty Double IPA with a score of 100 in beer magazines. It was so elusive for a while that I found myself drooling in anticipation of that first sip. It was THAT beer that made me really think more about Vermont. Soon after, my friends had told me about the Vermont Brewers Association’s Vermont Brewery Challenge – Passport Program. More than just a map of state breweries, it’s a “passport” in which you attend each brewery listed, get your passport ORDER stamps, and when you’ve Your Clams gone to all the breweries you mail it in and NOW! listed, receive a t-shirt! Craft beer tourists don’t need a reason to visit all these breweries other than the locations and the beers themselves, but who doesn’t like a good challenge? With 48 breweries in the Vermont Since 1948 Brewers Association, my guess is the passport has to be completed CELEBRATING over several visits. It’s 67 YEARS OF SERVICE definitely a good start Three Generations if you’ve never been to & Counting! Vermont and need a little guidance. My first (and only) visit 2130 West Genesee St. to Vermont was a trip Westvale Plaza • Syracuse, NY to Burlington to attend 315-468-4767 the Vermont Brewers OPEN 6 DAYS A WEEK ≈ MON. - SAT. lovely drive through the Adirondacks into the unknown. A beautiful city on Lake Champlain, Burlington is quaint, picturesque and worth the five-hour drive. I had no expectations other than to attend an event and experience Vermont’s finest. From the very well known (Harpoon, Magic Hat) to craft breweries that Vermonters knew so well (but I didn’t), most of it was new to me and I loved it. After trying different styles, meeting people from other parts of the state, I knew that I wanted to return for a proper visit to explore more of this beautiful state If you can try Sip of Sunshine from and what their breweries have to Lawson’s, then by all means take a offer. Two days at a beer fest was sip, no sunscreen needed! just a tease! After leaving, I knew I wanted to come back to actually visit these breweries. The Alchemist, probably one of Vermont’s best-known craft breweries, has had a reputation of exclusivity. That is, their Heady Topper was only sold on certain days, with limits, and just plain tough to get. On June 30th, this Stowe brewery opened its Brewery and Visitors Center to the public, to the delight of many. Central New Yorkers didn’t waste any time to go visit them – Facebook posts with pictures of their visits were all over the place. Another popular brewery and destination is Hill Farmstead in Greensboro Bend. Your new friends there will be Edward, Arthur, Susan, and Mary continued on pg 7

We’ve all played in straight-ahead cover bands for years. We do this because want to do something more from our own noggins. CS: Amen to that! I love hearing about new original music. How do you go about writing? Who initiates the material? Are there any topics or themes in particular of which you like to write about? MT: well, most everything begins with a jam. Then one of us will take Bassist Tom Navagh has significant some of the ideas and come up with history with the Budd Zunga Band, a tune. We all add our ideas to that and with the Alligators. and see where it leads. The writer gets final say. We all contribute to writing lyrics. Themes range from ‘luziana’ gators to old shoes, to politics, religion, toes, and....the opposite sex! Maybe some whiskey, too. CS: With a history of cover gigs in each of your repertoires, why the switch to original music? MT: I have played original music in every band I’ve been in, and I think we all have, so it’s not a new concept for any of us. Probably, if it wasn’t so tricky to get some audiences to open up to it, we would do considerably more. I think a lot of bands might. CS: I’m sure they would. Most every musician I’ve met here tells me they’re

grateful for the cover gigs, but, they’d rather play originals. I, for one, miss the original music I might not ever hear. Anyway, speaking of ‘around here,’ what are your views on the CNY music scene. MT: The Syracuse Music scene is challenging and always has been. But, a worthy band can generally find some work and even make some money now and then. CS: Advice for the budding musician? MT: As for advice to new musicians, know what you’re doing musically and understand the business part of it. It’s not all art. CS: Well said. How is the summer schedule looking for B-Side? among others. They’re a welcoming bunch that wants you to enjoy your visit and to take them home with you! I first met Arthur in Syracuse, where a local pub manager gave me a bottle of this beer. Delicious! Similar to The Alchemist, Hill Farmstead has a pseudo-cult like following for good reason, as does Lawson’s Finest in Warren. If someone says they have a Sip of Sunshine from Lawson’s, then by all means take a sip, no sunscreen needed! I am certainly no expert in Vermont beers and I’m still learning as I go. What I do know is that Vermont is a beautiful summer getaway, an easy drive, and worth the brewery visits alone. Just because August is a bittersweet month doesn’t mean it’s the last chance to take a drive over to our friendly neighbors to the east. Anytime of year would be perfect to go to Vermont – cheese, syrup, beer and all. So pack up the car, have some extra room in the trunk for all the beer you want to buy and enjoy the exploration. Cheers!

Word on the Street by BILL MCCLELLAN

A Poem & a Journey Folks, as you know, I only get one column a month. It has been several years since I shared two of my favorite framings of verse. I want to offer this again as readership grows and changes and I also think regulars will agree this is well worth the read. In my lifetime I have never seen such wisdom contained so well, as it is in these two brief writings. These compendiums of profound and compassionate thought are the wisdoms of decades placed ingeniously in enjoyable and extremely valuable prose. Some years ago I worked for a Priest that fully understood that doing well in life is a gift. Not a right, but something to humbly be thankful for. Tragedy often rips the heart out of those that otherwise would have found fortune and happiness. If there are such things as Saints, or those that somehow touch the spirit world and come to represent the finest that we are, then this Priest was such a man. Surely I saw the deeds that are the will and the way of this higher plane. His heart was pure and giving like no other I have ever seen. His name was Father Ray McVey. His charge was those that were forsaken the gift of a good life. The reasons were many that his charge was broken, from losing families in crashes, to being confined for years in a tiger cage in China during WWII, to being bashed too much too young without the good fortune to meet those angels of mercy that repair

“Wisdom, compassion, and courage are the three universally recognized moral qualities of men. “

broken spirits. One day I found the following untitled poem on a bulletin board at this miraculous little place called Unity Acres where this Priest cared for those the world had let go. I will never forget these men, humbled by extraordinary tragedy and pain. Men with nothing left, that found a Priest that gave them hope, and care, and dignity, and respect. One man in a wheelchair who had lost his family in the same accident told me that Father McVey had shown him how to love the sky and the trees and the smell of grass and flowers, once again. There were 133 more stories at Unity Acres at that time. Each one with tragedy that took the heart out of a life. Each one with a Priest, that lived through daily deed, his love and compassion for them. Each with a Priest they loved and revered that gave meaning and hope, where meaning hope was no more.

“Untitled” by an unknown lonely wise man at Unity Acres “Pray don’t find fault with the man that limps or stumbles along the road, unless you have worn the shoes he wears or struggled beneath the load. There may be tacks in his shoes that hurt though hidden away from view, or the burden he bears placed on your back might cause you to stumble too. Don’t sneer at the man that is down today unless you have felt the blow that caused his fall, the blame that only they the fallen know. You may be strong but still the blows that are his, if dealt to you the self-same way at the self-same time might cause you to stagger to. Don’t be too harsh with the man that sins or pelt him with word or stone, unless you are sure, yea doubly sure, that you have no sins of your own. For you know perhaps, if the tempter’s voice should whisper as soft to you, as it did to him when he went astray it might cause you to falter too...” Author Unknown.. The following poem, when taken to heart, has a wisdom that enhances our appreciation for life. For each day as we live it. What could be more valuable? It has a calming affect that sets upon us as we ponder continued on pg 10

Star Trek Beyond Less than ten years ago, it looked as if movie audiences had seen the last of the STAR TREK crew. Interest was waning, and the box-office numbers couldn’t justify any further entries in the cinematic series. In 2009, however, director J.J. Abrams rolled the dice and stepped behind the camera to bring the original crew’s characters back to life. STAR TREK was a thrilling sci-fi adventure that not only re-energized the franchise, but successfully catapulted it to staggering new heights. The follow-up feature, STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS was another hit, and while some die-hard fans weren’t blown away in the same way that they were in the previous venture, it was still an entertaining excursion into deep space. With his decision to stand at the helm of STAR TREK: THE FORCE AWAKENS, Abrams passed the STAR TREK baton on to Justin Lin. While still serving as producer, Abrams gave up a large portion of the creative control on the project. Lin, who is best known for FAST & FURIOUS and FAST & FURIOUS 6, had already proven that he has a talent for delivering high-flying action, but the question remained as to whether or not he would be able to make the transition into outer space. Truth be told, I’m a STAR TREK fan. I’m certainly not at the Trekkie or Trek-

As the owner says: “Seafood, steak and pasta’s. Come down to Kosta’s!” Kosta’s Bar and Grill is all that - and more. But that’s not surprising once you’ve spoken to owner, John Gotsis. He’s been in the restaurant business since first coming to the United States from Greece as a teenager with his family (they “took a chance,” he says, and remembers that it was July 31st when they arrived) - starting as a bus boy and working his way up to cook, chef, and ultimately, acquiring the Port Byron Diner. Eventually, he opened Kosta’s - it had been an ice cream parlor - and is, in his heart, his outlook, and the evident care with which he does everything, a genuine “restaurateur.” That, of course, is an expensive word for someone who does a great job of running a great place to eat. Walking into the neat, newly renovated spot - carefully landscaped and recently expanded, with plenty of parking in the adjacent lot and across the street - it’s clear that care has gone into all the choices: a dining room with large roundtop tables and plenty of light; a slightly darker area with cozy booths featuring soft, cushiony banquettes; a bar area with high top tables and expanded seating. And 64 - that’s right, sixty-four - flat screen TVs, featuring all the major premium sports channels (yes, there is even one in the bathroom so you don’t have to miss an inning or a play), and enough SU signage to give credence to Gotsis’s claim that his restaurant is a “home away from the Dome!” On any given big game night, the bar and restaurant will be full to capacity. When we stopped in for a late lunch on a warm Wednesday afternoon, a comfortable crowd of mixed visitors was in attendance: families in the dining room, some bar-and-a-sandwich patrons (who invited Ioannis to share a birthday drink with one of them - clearly,

Preventive Medicine by DR. BARRY

Medical Mythbusters Sometimes that’s how I feel. I am by no means a lone voice crying out in the woods in talking about the exaggerated benefits of statin therapy, the limited data to support dietary sodium restriction, the modest and controversial benefits of aspirin therapy for primary prevention but it sure seems like it. I write today about birth and death. The birth of dietary guidelines and the death of common sense. I know you think the government is careful and thorough in all things...I mean look at how well Obamacare is doing, our war against terrorism, our carefully balanced budgets etc. Well, the dietary guidelines were crafted years ago...perhaps the government was somehow better, more honest then. Sorry to disappoint but read on. I will write more about the cholesterol con in further posts but today I focus on dietary guidelines. In 1977 the United States Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs convened a consensus panel… (one of the participants quipped that if there was real consensus they wouldn’t need a panel) That panel concluded… despite the lack of any real evidence that dietary fat caused heart disease and obesity. Interestingly enough for you history buffs the chair of the committee was Senator George McGovern. The panel’s guidelines became the Dietary Goals for the United States and the instructions were to eat more carbohydrates and less fat. Specifically the guidelines said you should consume 55-60% of your calories from carbohydrates! As

In 1977 the United States Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs convened a consensus panel. The panel’s guidelines became the Dietary Goals for the United States and the instructions were to eat more carbohydrates and less fat.

the great Dr. Jason Fung points out in his book “the Obesity Code” the American Heart Association’s guidelines in 1995 “Americans should eat six or more servings of breads, cereals, pasta and starchy vegetables and to choose fruit juices and carbonated beverages as your liquids of choice.” Six servings of bread? Carbonated beverages as the liquids of choice? This seems laughable ! How can this be a real recommendation? The results of these recommendations? Heart disease did not decrease significantly as was predicted but obesity has increased to “epidemic” proportions. Current recommendations are still based on misguided interpretations of research done years ago. There is almost no scientific basis for the current guidelines. For a an absolutely superb video on this subject… check out Dr. Peter Attia on youtube or his website “the eatingacademy.com”. His common sense, easy to follow review of massive amounts of historic and current data... the same data some of the guidelines use to make their recommendations and so much of the conflicting data that has been ignored will completely convince you of the errors of our current thinking.

Just from a common sense standpoint… who could believe that such completely natural things like eggs and butter could be deadly and you should instead use this alien yellow substance in a slightly different yellow colored plastic container. We were told the fat in milk is bad for us… not a shred of evidence to support that and instead we became a nation of soda drinkers or just as bad… juice drinkers… if, as is typical, the juice contains high fructose corn syrup. We all learned to cut off the fat from our steak while at the same time consuming more nitrate containing bologna and hot dogs. We were told that breakfast was the most important meal of the day which is worse than nonsense since the typical american breakfast consists of some cereal product. News alert… there is no healthy cereal period. It’s all processed carbohydrates. It’s the worse thing you could put in your mouth in the morning. The worse thing. I recoiled in horror the other day when I learned that a relative of mine was so proud of the fact that they had the same thing for breakfast every day… Cheerios. First, wouldn’t a little variety be nice? Who really wants to eat the very same thing every morning ? Well I could understand if the results were impressive but let’s just say the Cheerios have left an impression on my relative. A BIG impression. So yes I am saying that eggs and butter and steak and milk are very healthy foods. The idea that you should substitute one fat for another is flawed. The one exception is trans fats… completely manufactured fats for the most part. You avoid trans fat and processed sugars when you avoid processed foods. Anything out of a box is processed. Many current dietary guidelines say to limit saturated fats and substitute fats like linoleic acid will cut down the risk of stroke and heart attack. Now it gets interesting because recently data from the Minnesota Coronary Experiment which looked at just this question has been reexamined. As published in Cardiology Today July 2016 (hows that for current data!). The data are very damning for the guidelines. This was a double blind study involving almost 10,000 people They wanted to see if substituting linoleic acid for typical fats would cut down on cholesterol levels and heart attacks and death. Those are some easy to understand endpoints. Dr Zaomora and colleagues found that the change in diet did indeed lower cholesterol but it had no mortality benefit whatsoever. The change in diet did continued on pg 18

Unfortunately when you show data that disputes the current “Cholesterol is bad...if your cholesterol is high you must take a pill” dogma usually the establishment just rejects it. chilled chicken, Texas sized croutons, onion and a dressing-to-die-for, with my preferred slightly lemony tang. My friend wanted a Philly steak - no onions, no peppers - so you can definitely have it your way. The sandwich was eaten to the last bite, so I can only assume it was as good as it looked: lots of juicy, flavored, thin-sliced beef with a generous amount of melted cheese. I stole one (or two) of the accompanying fries, and they were as crisp and well-cooked as they looked. Nothing is more disappointing that a soggy fry. No problem here. As always, it’s the little things that count, and besides some pickle slices, there was a thoughtful couple of bites of slaw to add a little sass to the dish, served in its own little dish to allow you to blend your flavors as you like! One more small observation: everywhere we looked there were plaques and signs and indications that Kosta’s is a part of the Auburn community: teams and outings and town events saying “thank you” for the interest the restaurant, and its owner, takes in not just his food and his restaurant, but the town he serves. Thank you, Ioannis Gotsis - we will be back!

Tricks and Tips for Great Golf Looking For The Magic Move To Great Golf? Astounding golf swing break through! Learn how one magic golf move has been described by golf swing experts as “The Holy Grail In Golf”! What is this secret move you ask?... In a nutshell - “Start the backswing with an early backward wrist break!” Lemme explain. I know what you’re thinking, this sounds too simple to be true. It goes against every rule you ever heard about starting the golf swing. But it’s true - and unless your golf swing is now everything that you want it to be, you will find out how and why this one magic move is made. The backward wrist break is quite simple to do. If you have been breaking your wrist in the conventional way you The backward wrist break is quite simple to may need a little time to convince yourdo. If you have been breaking your wrist in self of the backward wrist break. the conventional way you may need a little Conventional golf swing wisdom says time to convince yourself of the backward to break the right wrist (right handed wrist break. golfer) late in the backswing. Since the backward wrist break is the first move in the backswing, let’s be absolutely certain you understand what it is. First, hold your right hand in front of you, fingers together and extended, thumb up and the palm squarely facing the left. From that position bend the hand to the right, trying to make the fingers come back toward the outside of the wrist. You can’t get them anywhere near the wrist, of course, but a person with supple wrists can bend the hand back until hand and wrist form a right angle. This motion of the hand, straight back, is the backward wrist break. The way the right hand should move from the wrist in the early backward break-straight back toward the outside of the forearm, with no turning or rolling. The conventional wrist break is quite different. Hold your hand again as you held it before. Now, instead of bending it backward, bend it up, so that the thumb comes toward you. That is the orthodox, accepted wrist break. Forget it. You will no longer need it. To make the backward wrist break we merely push the heel of the right hand down against the big knuckle of the left thumb. This is a downward pressure of the heel on the thumb. When it is done, without moving the hands otherwise, the right hand breaks backward at the wrist and the left hand breaks forward or inward, the back of the left hand going under and facing, in a general way, toward the ground. How the backward break is made, with the heel of the right hand pressing down on the knuckle of the left thumb. The back of the left hand begins to turn down and under. How not to make the break. Wrists and hands have rolled, the back of the left hand has continued on pg 28

The Write Stuff by NANCY ROBERTS

Paper Vs. Pixels When is the last time you read a book? Seriously, now. I don’t even mean a book on a Kindle - that still counts as a book to me, though it’s not quite the same as a book-book, that thing you held in your hands and it was made of paper and cardboard (oh, and way back when, leather covers!), and smelled of ink and maybe smoke or a little musty if it had been packed away. It felt nice in your hands, generally, though I did (do?) have a quarrel with some book’s size - a book should fit comfortably in your hands, neither too large to wrap your hands around nor too small for the number of pages (yes, Dickens is going to just have to be a large book unless the print is so small that your glasses won’t ever be strong enough).

But does anybody read a real book any more?

Dare I recollect going to the library: in my neighborhood growing up, it was an old mansion that had been converted, each wing (and the balcony) dedicated to a type of reader: the non-fiction to left, the fiction, arranged by genre, to the right. A central counter was flanked by the card catalogs (now that’s really dating things!), and before you left you displayed a library card: your card and the book’s card were photographed simultaneously so they knew who you were and how to find you if you didn’t bring that book back on time! There was nothing quite like the moment when you graduated from picture books to chapter books. A proud moment, to be sure. My biggest goal in life was to read the biggest, baddest book I could find: Gone With the Wind when OPEN FOR LUNCH DAILY I was 10. There was something about the sheer size of a book that could be satisfying. Now, of course, you can “rent” a book, buy it digitally, or even “borrow” 18-HOLES

it digitally online. I admit to being stubborn, however, and I still buy books. I like to comb through a place like Ollie’s for books that are slightly out of date or perhaps didn’t sell well - though I have to say I have found some treasures there for $4-$5. Or to stop at Barnes and Noble and stroll through the racks and racks of books, pick one up and judge its heft, turn over a few pages (I have a habit of always reading the very last sentence of any new book - somehow, it tells me if I’m going to like it or not), and decide if it “feels” like something I’d enjoy. There are myriad details that tell you if you’ll enjoy the whole ritual of reading a book: what is the typeface? How does the paper feel? Is it a book that you can comfortably read in bed, turned on your side and propping it up on a pillow?

Can you sample a digital book like that?

Now, don’t mistake me: there are some definite advantages to digital books. They’re highly portable. Assuming your power doesn’t give out. And of course, that omnipresent problem of reading on the beach: is the contrast high enough to withstand bright sunlight? And of course, most digital devices will get hot and don’t survive being dropped in the pool any better than a paperback will. But you can carry 20 with you on a trip, so they’re certainly easier to pack. And if you don’t feel like this one, you can skip over to that one very quickly. Digital books also offer some distinct advantages: I don’t know a word, so I can highlight it and if I have an Internet connection, I can get a definition very quickly. And of course it’s possible to highlight and bookmark text easily and quickly - and there is a certain sharing community of seeing what others who have read a book have highlighted as memorable. You don’t need a bookmark (though, I have to admit enjoying collecting assorted bookmarks, or getting creative with various scraps of paper, a Voted B leaf, a photo to use as a bookmark), and e s t Used Bo ok Stor you know how quickly you are reading e in Syrac use a given book (at this rate you will finish this chapter in five minutes). But for all of the similarities and differences in digital books and paper books - they are books. Beauty & Fashion by ERIN REIMEL

End-of-Summer Beauty Solutions The August heat can seem unbearable at times, but it’s also the light at the end of the tunnel. Fall will be here soon. You may find yourself sweating as you get ready in the morning or maybe you get to work and your makeup is already half way down your face. The high temps can make you feel like you’re melting. So what’s the point of even wearing makeup this month? Well, you definitely don’t have to. But in case you can’t seem to shake your beauty addiction, there are a few tricks to keeping your makeup looking fresh and melt-free.

Pick products that do it all.

Do you tend to apply a moisturizer, then sun screen, then foundation, then a powder? That’s too much for a crazy hot day. It feels like your face is wearing a sweater. Instead, pick a tinted moisturizer with added SPF. It feels light weight, gives you some coverage, and protects your skin from UV rays. Plus, you can usually get away without powdering your face because it won’t be cake-y. Now you only have one face product to worry about. Open Tuesday – saTurday

Avoid panda eye at all costs.

Personally I find that if my face is sweating, my mascara tends to transfer from my lower lashes to my skin. It’s a pain because then I look like I have dark circles and I’m sweaty. It’s not very attractive. To avoid the dark mascara circles I stick to a waterproof mascara. It won’t transfer and I can jump in the pool with it on and not even think twice.

keep a rose water spray at my desk. I spritz it all over my face when I get to work and let it dry. Not only does it smell delicious I feel like my face got a quick rinse without actually washing my makeup off. When the water dries I feel as good as new.

Keep the rest of your products minimal.

Contouring and strobing and all of those other techniques are fun but not when you’re spending the day wishing you could wash your makeup off and bask in the AC. Instead of laying the powders on, try going for a universal product that gives your face dimension without all the effort. A shimmery bronzer is perfect for your cheeks because it gives you the shimmer of a highlighter, the warmth of a blush, and the glow of a bronzer.

Keep a face mist with you.

On sweltering days, I get to work after my commute feeling completely gross and sticky. I feel like I need to hop in the shower. Since that’s not an option I

better in depth - not just a sip or a sample, but a writer’s thesis laid out with footnotes and bibliography to support it, and a thread of logic from initial statement to defense and conclusion. I realized, not that long ago, that it had been quite a while since I had There are some definite advantages to digital actually read a book. books. They’re highly portable. I find my attention span reduced; I find the temptations too many and varied; I find my powers of concentration reduced and my desire to answer back increased. In this world of digital, instantaneous, hidden behind the veil of anonymity communications, we don’t sit still to hear another out - even if it’s fiction. Sure, a badly written bound book might be tossed aside if it proves unreadable. On the other hand, I recall one summer reading through a series of eight books about - of all things - a Selkie living on a Mississippi tributary. Horrible stuff, but at the same time, wonderful. Relaxing, silly, summer cocktail of a series that I enjoyed an hour or so at a sitting, on a dock by a small, upstate lake. As frothy and worthless as they were as literature, they served a lovely purpose: I remember them to this day; they were relaxing and fun; I was elsewhere for a short span, drinking in the summer evening and reading until the sunlight failed me, then finding my bookmark, and putting aside the book, and looking forward to the next chapter. And that probably sums it all up: there can be a strange reward to even the most ordinary of books. Try to remember the last time you read a digital post and it stayed with you setting, words, chair, daylight - for more than a moment or two. Now go find a book and dig in.

turned upward. The right hand is rolling too, instead of bending straight back. At this point the club will have come back slightly inside the projected line of flight but the club face will not have opened. The face will be at about a 45-degree angle with the ground and, as you stand there, you will not be able to see any of it. We have not put this into the actual swing yet, remember. We are still working on the biomechanics of the wrist break. At this point in your backswing you may find it hard to believe you can hit the ball with such a wrist break. So make this test… “Go To The Practice Tee, Or To A Range Or An Indoor Net. Address The Ball. Simply make the backward wrist break and do nothing else!” Don’t shift your weight, move your hips, or turn your shoulders. Just make the backward break. Hold it a couple of seconds. Now simply turn your shoulders, letting the shoulders swing your arms and the club up to the top, and then go right on through with the swing and hit the ball. Try this a couple of times and you will be amazed. You will find, if you keep the wrist position, you not only hit the ball, but that you hit it solidly, hit it straight, and hit it a surprisingly long distance. The beauty of this golf move is it allows you to make a complete shoulder turn while keeping the golf club on plane throughout the swing. Make no effort to swing the arms, just let the shoulders move them and the club. The more the arms are swung independently of the shoulders, the less likely you are to reach a good position at the top. So picture the shoulders as the motivating force, the “motor.” Here is what you should see when you make the backward break perfectly only one knuckle of the left hand but two knuckles of the right. The closer you bring this motivating force to the axis of the swing (the spinal column) the better the swing will be.

Rise of the Gym Selfies There she goes again. Another selfie with the same exact facial expression, pose and head tilt, just a different background this time. Nice, can’t wait for the next one. I have a confession to make. I’ve taken more than a few selfies in my day. I take them from different angles, in different lighting, of different body parts, in clothes, and yes, even out of them. I take some in the privacy of my own home, I take some in the women’s locker room, in the bathroom and occasionally, when I’m feeling really good, I’ll snap one out on the gym floor. With social media exploding and increasingly on the rise, it seems as though we construct most of our experiences through images. We want to let people know where we are, what we’re doing and how we look while doing it. Even though the occasional selfie is considered to be the norm these days, it can be quite a distraction to those around you. Like all things, it’s important to be mindful of your surroundings and considerate of others before whipping out your phone and taking a selfie, especially in public. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Be Considerate of Others If it’s a busy day at the gym, perhaps standing in front of the abdominal machine snapping photos of yourself with your abs flexed and your shirt pulled up to your neck isn’t such a good idea. Using the gym equipment (when you’re not even working on it) for your own personal photo shoot is NOT okay.

STAY IN SHAPE FOR THE SUMMER!

Make Sure Your Selfie is Just That, a “Selfie”

See our website or

This is especially important if you’re taking selfies in the gym locker rooms. Most of us view the locker room as a private space, and we definitely wouldn’t appreciate someone holding up a phone if we are changing, just coming out of the shower or walking out of a bathroom stall. If there’s someone else in the background of your selfie, be considerate and don’t take the picture.

Introducing STRONG by ZUMBA Saturday, August 20 at 9:30 AM

Track Your Progress The scale doesn’t always tell the whole 88 year old Ray Holbrook has a message story, but a picture cerfor us all. tainly can. When you’re working hard, taking the occasional selfie can really help you see the difference in your physique. The bonus is you will be able to track the progress you are making without having to step on the scale. Say cheese and focus on the positive Yes, gym selfies can be a distraction, especially if someone is repositioning their body, re- applying their lip gloss and fluffing their hair between each picture, but they can also be a great source of inspiration and motivation. Let’s think about the potential power of selfies as a source of motivation and inspiration to change. I recently read the results to a weight loss study that took place in Columbia. All the study participants were required to take full-body pictures of their progress each week in addition to other standard measurements, such as waist to hip ratios and weight. A whopping ninety percent of the two hundred and seventy one participants finished the study and more than seventy percent met their weight loss goals. The study concluded that participants were particularly motivated by changes to their waist circumferences, which were easily seen when comparing week-to-week photos. What about the encouragement and support you receive when you post a selfie to social media? When you log into Facebook and see that a bunch of your friends have liked a gym selfie you’ve posted (you know with the #gymflow), how does it make you feel? Does it inspire you to throw on your fitness gear and head to the gym? Are you motivated to go harder while you’re there? Does it make you want to improve your diet?

Tips and Tricks for Great Golf continued from pg 28

golfer’s handicap has stayed the same for the past 20 years - Even with all the advancements in golf equipment technology. I will be pulling the curtain back on some golf swing tips you may consider as gospel...so please keep an open mind.

Falsehoods have ruined more golf swings than I care to imagine. They can be the reason the average golfer’s handicap has stayed the same for the past 20 years.

Top 5 Golf Fallacies That Are Ruining Golfer’s Game: 1. RELAX - Pure rubbish! How many times have you heard this golf swing tip from a golf pro or a playing partner? The golf swing is a violent action - is there any other violent action you take when you relax? - of course not - This is foolish advice. 2. Be Loose. This is the second cousin of “Relax”. When you are “loose” in the golf swing your hips are NOT restricted therefore you will NOT have that important coil in your backswing robbing you of much power. 3. Take The Club Back Inside - More rubbish! I’m sure you’ve heard many times how the correct golf swing is from the inside. So some golfers yank the club way inside early in their backswing thinking this will allow them to hit from the inside. These golfers are shocked when they still hit the golf ball from the outside. Hitting the golf ball from the inside comes from proper hip and shoulder action at the start of the downswing. You can take the club back way outside and still hit the ball from the inside - look at Jim Furyk - he takes

the club way back to the outside however his move from the top of the swing is pure and from the inside. 4. The Club Head Follows The Same Path Going Back As It Does Coming Down. Again, this golf swing tip has been misguiding golfers for generations. The path of the clubface is much more to the inside during the downswing than during the backswing in a sound golf swing. This is because a proper golf swing has a lateral shift of the hips which drops the club into the all important “slot” early in the downswing. This action of the left hip automatically puts the path of the clubface much more to the inside than the path going back. 5. Rotate The Hips To Start The Downswing. This one piece of golf swing snake oil has probably ruined more swings because the golfer spins out of the swing when starting down. Turning the hips to start the downswing forces you to throw the golf club to the outside causing terrible mishits. Again, the correct move is a lateral shift of the left hip to start the downswing and the hips will then turn automatically. It is possible to NOT have this lateral shift and still turn the hips from the top - howeverComputer Technology Articles, it is IMPOSSIBLE to have the lateral shift of the left hip to start the downswing and the hips NOT turn. Hit ‘em Long and Straight!

tempting to convey perhaps that we are hard working? Don’t we view people who pursue health and fitness as being disciplined, motivated, organized, and as valued members of society? SheKnows.com and Shape.com conducted a survey of one thousand three hundred and twenty nine people about social media’s effects on health, fitness and body image. Based on the survey’s results, readers reported that social media sites and online communities affect fitness and eating habits positively.

• 41.9 percent of users felt more motivated to make healthy eating choices. • 39 percent were more motivated to work out. • 15 percent felt guilty if they didn’t stick to their diet and fitness routine. When asked how they felt when friends shared updates via social media about their fitness goals, fifty three percent felt inspired and motivated to be healthier, while twenty two percent felt envious. It was also noted that users felt more animosity toward celebrities’ diet and fitness updates than those of their friends.

In Conclusion

Whether we want to acknowledge it or not, we live in a digital world. There’s no solid foundation to call this phenomenon a narcissistic delight or a disease originated due to the crazy evolution of the media and internet sectors. Regardless, self-portraits are a means of interacting socially and affiliating with others around the world. They also play a huge role in the process of bettering ourselves and transforming our lives! Selfies are a great form of self-expression, inspiration and motivation, but remember to love who you are and celebrate the beauty you see in the mirror! You are brilliant and special with or without the validation of Facebook, Instagram or Pinterest. Embrace your individual beauty and if you want to post a photo about it, by all means go for it. I may just be the first person to like it.

For the past few years, when it comes to comic-book adaptations, Marvel has had the market cornered. Their expanded universe, which includes IRON MAN, THOR, CAPTAIN AMERICA, and of course, THE AVENGERS, has found a way to consistently deliver entertaining, humorous, and action-packed thrills at virtually every turn. Each release sky-rockets to the top of the box-office, and this trend is likely to continue for years to come. Of course, Marvel isn’t the only entity with a barrage of classic characters at their disposal. The DC Comics catalog contains names such Superman, Batman, The Flash, and WonderWoman. With the release of Movie Title: CMAN OF STEEL in 2013, Warner Brothers unleashed their DC Expanded Universe upon the world. Opinions varied when it came to MAN OF STEEL, but I thought it was pretty spectacular. The film presented an interesting spin on one of the genre’s most legendary names, and presented an adequate tonal shift from Marvel. Like most others, when I heard that the next project was going to be continued on pg 40

RECIPE

Batman V. Superman continued from pg 36

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, my inner geek was delighted. Arguably my two favorite heroes squaring off against one another on the big-screen? It doesn’t get much better than that! When BATMAN V SUPERMAN was released earlier this year, it was met with both praise and disdain. The polarizing film became one of the highest grossing ventures of 2016 ($872 million worldwide) yet it wasn’t exactly branded a success. The most common critique was that there was too much going on within the movie itself, and many of the sequences and

Shrimp Boil Foil Packets Recipe by Chungah Rhee

Ingredients: 1 1/2 pounds large shrimp, peeled and deveined 1 (12.8-ounce) package smoked andouille sausage, thinly sliced 2 ears corn, each cut crosswise into 4 pieces 1 pound baby red potatoes, halved 2 tablespoons olive oil 4 teaspoons cajun seasoning Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley leaves

Directions: Preheat a gas or charcoal grill over high heat. Cut four sheets of foil, about 12-inches long. Divide shrimp, sausage, corn and potatoes into 4 equal portions and add to the center of each foil in a single layer.

Fold up all 4 sides of each foil packet. Add olive oil, cajun seasoning, salt and pepper, to taste; gently toss to combine. Fold the sides of the foil over the shrimp, covering completely and sealing the packets closed. Place foil packets on the grill and cook until just cooked through, about 12-15 minutes.* Served immediately, garnished with parsley, if desired. *This can also be baked for 15-17 minutes at 425 degrees F.

plot-lines were deemed disjointed and confusing. These sentiments were certainly justified, and, as a result, Snyder let it be known that when the Blu-Ray edition was to be released, it would contain the film that he had wanted to make all along. Not only would it be the R-rated feature that he intended it to be, but it would clock in around the 3-hour mark and expand on many of the scenes that had been After the events of MAN OF STEEL Batman doesn’t view Superman as the hero that many others do, but rather, a superior shortened in its theatribeing that could destroy all of humanity in the blink of an eye. In comparing the two versions of the film, the director’s cut is clearly better than its theatrical houses his corporation crumbles to the ground, killing everyone inside. Wayne doesn’t view Superman as the hero that many others do, but rather, counterpart. The inevitable battle between the heroes serves as the focal point of the film, but there are multiple story-lines that develop as the movie rolls along. There is Lex Luther (Jesse Eisenberg) who longs to destroy Superman and has his own motivations and methods in order to do so. Lois Lane (Amy Adams) attempts to juggle her career and relationship with Clark as she navigates the perilous world of newspaper journalism. Bruce Wayne relives the murder of his parents with each passing day. Superman continues to do what he feels is right in order to save those in need, while others, including Senator Finch (Holly Hunter) who feel that his power is too absolute and that he must answer for the decisions that he has made. Ultimately, BATMAN V SUPERMAN leaves a hollow feeling by the time the end credits roll. There are a number of pretty decent action sequences, and, thankfully, the battle between the iconic title characters is impressively intense. Be forewarned, however, it takes an awfully long time to get there. Because of this, when it finally goes down, it seems like the movie should be just about wrapping up. Instead, there is still yet another character to meet, and more wars to be waged. This is where Snyder’s film really begins to crumble. Admittedly any Batman-based production was going to be facing an uphill battle. Christopher Nolan’s DARK KNIGHT trilogy serves as the definitive adaptation of the deeply flawed antihero. Not only this, but THE DARK KNIGHT is generally regarded as the greatest comic-book film of all time. Obviously, Snyder’s vision was going to be much different than his predecessor’s. Snyder, who directed 300 and WATCHMEN, has a vastly different style than Nolan, who was at the helm of MEMENTO, INCEPTION, and INTERSTELLAR. In addition, Snyder’s film needed to introduce a slew of characters who are going to be instrumental to the success of DC’s Universe, and the ramifications of the events in BATMAN V SUPERMAN are going to reverberate throughout the ensuing sagas, beginning with THE JUSTICE LEAGUE in 2017. Though I hardly think it is time for the folks at Warner Brothers to panic, the aforementioned JUSTICE LEAGUE is going to stand as the litmus test of where the universe goes from here. If BATMAN V SUPERMAN was already as crammed and convoluted, how is an AVENGERS type of flick possibly going to succeed? There is no denying that there is a great deal of talent striving find the right footing, and hopefully they’ll find a way to avoid the shortfalls of DAWN OF JUSTICE.
