Sounds Of Syracuse

by CHUCK SCHIELE

A Backstage Chat with Christopher Ames The CHRISTOPHER AMES BAND was born out of the frustrating lack of volume and numbers inherent in a singer/songwriter’s life. Traveling the country for over 20 years as a solo performer and doing his level best to wring every drop of emotion, faith, honesty and truth out of the stories he sang and the guitar he played, Christopher Ames simply got tired of doing it all alone. And without an amp. Now throw into the mix Danny Clausen (drums) and JB Mckinstry (bass) and you start to get the feeling that something is going on here. More than just adding rhythm and low end, more than just a launch pad for Christopher’s guitar (and that amp), and more than just another Syracuse power trio, this band of brothers gives skin and bones to the songs that Chris writes; doing them justice live the way the studio did them justice on CD. And at the end of the day, it’s always about the songs. Songs born out of life, out of experience, out of mileage, out of our stories … speaking to this Christopher says, “The more I hear people tell their stories, the more I recog-

nize that our lives are mosaics interwoven with threads of grace. The edges are sharp, there is joy and heartbreak, but in the midst of it all, there is God calling.” It is these mosaics, these stories and this God who inform the songs of the CHRISTOPHER AMES BAND. While you can still find Christopher Ames playing solo dates now and then, you will never see him happier than when the full band counts off the first song of the night. I caught up with Chris at a recent show where we were hanging out backstage waiting for our respective performances to occur.

Chuck Schiele: How did you get started in music? Christopher Ames: The earliest music memory I have is coming across Elvis Presley’s Hound Dog on a 45 in my grandparents house. It belonged to my aunt, she the was the 50’s sock hop type who became the cool 60’s chick once the Beatles arrived. I latched onto Elvis first with vague childhood thoughts of being a singer. A buddy of mine in elementary school named Chip introduced me to the Beatles in 4th grade and that is when it got serious —I found a tennis racket and started spending serious hours in my parents room in front of the mirror singing along with every Beatles record I could get. CS: Haha. I used to jump on the bed rocking out to records with my best pal Mike Kane. We played the hell out of our Hot-Wheel tracks. But we weren’t opposed to badminton racquets now and then. You’ve been steady ever since. CA: I traded the tennis racket for a guitar —capitalized on being an introvert by spending hours in my room practicing … high school bands … music major in college … college bands— graduated and spent 23 years full time on the road playing everything from ice cream parlors, book stores, and back yards to churches, camps, coffeehouses, bars, and military bases. I made a bunch of records in different group configurations. Moved to Syracuse and started a band here and currently pay the bills working at Guitar Center. I sell guitars during the day, play guitars at night. CS: What did you listen to? Tell us about the music that shaped you and your direction. CA: The Beatles are the biggest and most obvious. But, other folks that have influenced me over the years include Lightning Hopkins, Phil Keaggy, SRV, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Tom Petty, Foo Fighters. More recently I have been gleaning some ideas from the bands my sons listen to. Best

thing I have learned is that every player I come across has something to teach me. CS: Tell us about the projects you’re involved with now. Name names. CA: Currently I am fronting my own band: the Christopher Ames Band, a trio with Danny Clausen on drums and JB Mckinstry on bass. I have had the extreme honor of being a part of the BeatleCUSE family, playing with so many great local musicians. I am also involved with a couple of side projects, a song writing group called the Outlet and some acoustic duo work with Jeryl Payne. CS: Please share with us some of the highlights of your career. CA: I have played for a long time and been all over the country, recorded in Nashville and Dallas and other places. I’ve had some successes and some failures, but the two big highlights for me have been 1) that I have always been able to make my living from a guitar and 2) so many of the people I got to meet along the way became more than just cool stories and influences, but friends and family. CS: How about some of the weird stiff. Can you share a funny war story? CA: I was booked to sing the National Anthem for the Syracuse Crunch followed by a solo concert on the ice immediately after the game. I sang the continued on pg 4

CA: I love it —eclectic and alive. In one week alone I played a solo acoustic gig at Wegman’s, an outdoor show with all the great musicians from BeatleCUSE, and a Christopher Ames Band gig sharing the bill with 4 local hard core bands. Each gig was as different as night and day, but they were all Syracuse! CS: You were telling me backstage at the BeatleCuse event that you’re working on a new album. Craft Beer To Beat the Heat Lemonade and summer go hand in hand, just like the big lemon shaped kiosks and the state fair. Who doesn’t love a refreshingly tart drink during the dog days of summer? Now’s a good time as any to savor and explore sour beers and tart cocktails. One of the most common beer concoctions you’ll see on the shelves is the shandy, which is typically a low-alcohol beer mixed with lemonade. Try Dundee’s or Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy, as well as Traveler Curious Traveler Shandy and Sam Adams Porch Rocker. Even better, make a fresh shandy yourself: mix 1 cup sugar, 3 cups water, 1 cup fresh lemon juice, 2 fresh mint sprigs, and chilled beer of your choice. Make it and you’ll be hooked all summer long. Not a lemon fan? There are other tart beers out there that are sure to please! European brewers have been making sour beers for centuries, brewing in similar fashion to brewing’s beginnings thousands of years continued on pg 13

Tales from the Vine by CASSANDRA HARRINGTON

How are the Wineries Handling All the Rain? I realize I probably don’t have to tell anyone, but the Finger Lakes region has seen an unusual amount of rain this spring. Flash floods have caused damage to property in a matter of minutes and we’ve even seen a drop in visitation over previous years. The rain has been quite a “damper” and it seems to be continuing throughout the early summer weeks. I set out to ask our wineries what kind of affect all this precipitation is having on the vines. I also spoke with Dave Peterson, President and Co-Owner of Swedish Hill, Goose Watch & Penguin Bay Wineries. Here’s what Dave wrote on the topic: “While the weather has admittedly been wetter than most all of us would like, there is somewhat of a silver lining in it. With the excessively dry conditions in 2016, water tables needed to be recharged. Mother Nature seems to have now accomplished that! With the very dry conditions in 2016, newly planted vines struggled to get established and many of us resorted to hand watering just to keep them alive. This year, those vines that barely survived last year are thriving and look green and lush. The new vines that we have planted this year are off to a great start, and have more than twice as much growth as last year’s new vines at the same

stage. The rainy days, however, have made it harder for our vineyard team to keep up with the work load, and at times we have worked longer days on the sunny days to keep up. Weeds love the rain at least as much as the vines, so we are running our tillage tools every chance we get. Fortunately, technology has improved many of these tools to make it quicker and more efficient than in the old days. Quality of the grapes will mostly be determined by the weather mid-summer through the fall, so the spring and early summer rains really are not of major concern as to any negative effects on the wine quality. But, we are all hoping things do start to dry out a bit!” I then interviewed Dave Pittard, co-owner of Buttonwood Grove Winery. Dave continued on pg 14

War for the Planet of the Apes Despite the lofty expectations I placed upon it, I’m ecstatic to say that WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES delivered a fitting finale of one of the most unexpectedly tremendous trilogies in decades. Following RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, and DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, the series, which served as a reboot of the original franchise that began in 1968, was thoughtful, intense, and spectacularly thrilling. Craft Beer To Beat the Heat continued from pg 5 ago. German Berliner Weisse, Belgian Oud Bruin, Flanders Red, and Belgian Lambics are different types of sour beers worth investigating. Particularly interesting is the lambic, a beer so unique that it cannot be made anywhere else but in a region west of Brussels. Lambics are fermented by the action of naturally occurring, wild, airborne yeasts of the region, usually in wooden barrels. This spontaneous fermentation process contributes to the taste characteristics of the beer. While these beers do contain hops, they’re used primarily for their preservative characteristics and not Rosetta from Ommegang is a hoppy tasting at all. Some lambics nice sour beer to try. are blended with fruits such as raspberries and cherries to give it a sweet-sour profile. Another lambic, known as gueze, is a blend of old and new lambics that are bottled and aged for two to three years. This process gives the gueze a sharper sourness than that of an unblended lambic. Since they are rare and fermentation takes longer, some varieties may be harder to find and a bit more expensive than other beer choices. The pursuit and price is worth it, as these beers have a wonderful tart flavor that works well with cheeses, fruit, salads and dessert. A popular fruit lambic readily available here is Lindeman’s Framboise, a raspberry lambic that is fruity and tart. American craft brewers experiment and interpret their own styles of sour

in a number of ways. They experiment with a variety of yeasts, fruits and fermenting in steel and oak barrels. The result is a unique, American crafted sour. Some of these beers might be harder to identify if you don’t know what to look for, so you might have to do some investigative work. A great resource for looking up beer styles and breweries is www.beeradvocate. com. Some nice sours to try are Rosetta from Ommegang, a Flanders Oud Bruin, Southern Tier’s Cherry Gose, and Brooklyn’s Bel Air Sour to name a few. Once you’ve had a taste of these tart treats, you’ll be ready to pucker up! Cheers!

Wineries and Rain continued from pg 9 shared very similar sentiments. In addition, he recounted that last year, the winery planted a half acre of merlot and three quarters of an acre of chardonnay. The new vines love the excess rain, but any grass seed they have planted throughout the vineyard has been washed out. Pittard says “This was a great year to plant new vines!” He too shared that it is too soon to tell if the rain levels will affect this year’s crop. The biggest worry is the threat of mold and mildew. This calls for extra scouting. The vineyard team is looking more often than ever before at the crop to make sure that everything is under control. They’ve not needed to use additional preventative sprays, but they’re certainly keeping a close eye on the crop. On Saturdays, from 1:30 to 4:30pm, Buttonwood Grove Winery offers free live music and encourages people to bask in the sun on the deck while enjoying a glass. Saturday, July 1st brought a torrential downpour in the middle of their concert. This caused extreme runoff and all the property’s drainage ditches overflowed. The Buttonwood team then spent days restoring the grounds after the heavy rain damage. (But you would Mon-Thurs $ 95 11aM-8pM never guess it, the entire property is supremely stunning!) we needed” exclaimed Renodin. In Ithaca, they’ve not seen any negative effects on the vines themselves. The water table needed to be replenished. Mark is hoping to see the rain taper off come august when veraison sets in. We don’t want to be pessimistic, but if, by chance, the rain doesn’t stop, the quality of the fruit could diminish, meaning the berries will plump up with too much water and not enough sugar. More rain may mean that the wineries would be forced to spray more fungicide as well. In 2016, Six Mile Creek planted 800 Marquette vines, a “grandson” of pinot noir, and a light-to-medium bodied dry red that is common in colder climates. The grape was developed by University of Minnesota to have a cold tolerance of -37 Fahrenheit. Last year, the new plants didn’t grow much at all, but now they’re looking great, he says! The rain has been wonderful in the vineyards, but nearly everyone suspects it has had an adverse effect on visitation, negatively affecting sales. Given the fact that the vineyardists are hoping the rain tapers off about now, we’re hoping so from a marketing and management standpoint as well. The Meme: 40 Years Later Time to revisit the concept of the “meme.” This term is attributed to Richard Dawkins, who used it in his book, The Selfish Gene, published in 1976. And today, the memes are flying so fast and furiously they have done what Dawkins could never have predicted: they have made themselves irrelevant. Dawkins hypothesized that there was not just a genetic makeup to human beings that limited, predicted, and determined their behavior, but also a conceptual inheritance that could travel both vertically (parent to child) and horizontally (across a culture or sub-culture). His notion was that the meme evolved and came into clearer and clearer resolution over time, ultimately ending up as a “truth.” And in general, these units of cultural transmission were those that most benefited the social order in which they resided. So, “Thou shalt not murder” was of benefit to a society (note that the actual translation of the Biblical commandment was not “kill,” but murder, the implication being take another’s life without purpose or justification, such as self-defense, or perhaps in war, was the wrong), and spread rapidly from parent to child, and outward, from person to person. Thus Grog learned that it was better for all not to club Oog over the head and take his haunch of venison. Over time, as we note in the parenthetical comment, “murder” became “kill,” as social groups refined the initial meme and altered it - either purposefully, or

evolutionarily. And therein lies the evolution of the very concept of a “meme” that, in 1976 and before the advent of the personal computer, the Internet, and social media, Dawkins failed to envision: that memes could become tools, rather than unconscious but useful ideas, often used for the very antithesis of his notion of their purpose: rather than spreading a useful “truth,” they are used to deliberately spread lies, half-truths, and confirmation bias in the form of a short (false) attribution, or a captioned photograph. What Dawkins could also not have suspected was the proliferation of social media, its power, and that it —as well as to a large degree the so-called “MSM”— continued on pg 17

Let the Chips Fall

I have been floating around an idea which I think has a lot of merit and the time has come electronically. Grandma should be chipped! In this day and age when you buy something you can pay with Paypal, you can use a check, or you can use a credit card. Yes, cash is an option for you monetary Luddites. At one point the Green Hills Grocery store in the Valley had a way of paying for your groceries just by using your thumbprint and I loved that but they got rid of it. If you lose your wallet or your car keys there are now ways you can use electronic devices to recovery your items. There are a variety of these available including the tile system and tracker. You can use them to find your wallet. You can use them to find your phone or laptop. There is already technology that uses implanted chips … in your pet! You can get your dog or cat chipped so if they run off they can be identified when someone brings the animal to the vets office. If you would put a chip in your pet why won’t you chip grandma!? For that matter I would also suggest chipping kids until the age of 18 when they can decide for themselves whether to stay chipped or not. Why wouldn’t you want to be able to find out where your kids are just by using an app on your phone? No more Amber alerts!! No worries about where your kids are after midnight. There is a phone finder app that you could potentially use to find where your kids are but what if they turn it off or it

would be used as a vehicle for propaganda. As such, propaganda used to be considered, in western cultures, an evil thing, a tool of the devil, something only a “Commie” would use. At some point, propaganda became a necessary evil (they’re too ignorant to know what’s good for them), and finally, “Truth to power.” Of course, in reality, various social groups have used propaganda for millennia, in the form of religion, patriotism, proper behavior and norms. Dawkins would still have found this acceptable: that small but important ideas would be spread across a culture to aid that culture in surviving and prospering, and that eventually these small ideas would become an entrenched part of our psycho-social evolutionary selves. Recently I stumbled across an oldie but goodie (or, baddie): a President-who-shall-remain-unnamed said in a old People interview that (a certain party) had “the dumbest voters,” therefore, were he to run for President, he would run on that ticket. The person who quoted the meme on social media was absolutely serious in sharing it –that is, believed its authenticity. That it wasn’t checked goes back to the idea of confirmation bias: the sharer desired to believe its truth. I corrected it, but the bias Memes are flying so fast and stood: well, if he didn’t say it, it’s no doubt that furiously they have made themthat’s what he thinks. selves irrelevant. What do we call this? Memes run amok? A recent conversation with an acquaintance confirmed a suspicion I have been contemplating: all this “meming” is ultimately self-defeating. We have become so inundated with short, selfimportant, half-true or completely un-true “posts” that we’re only interested in two ways: either they confirm what we already think, or we can dismiss them as proof of the other side’s “fringe” lunacy. We’re tuning out. We are deliberately limiting our social media consumption, or being much more selective about it. Either way, if the meme was a unit of unconscious cultural evolution but it has become selfaware and used to bad purpose (think genetically engineered babies): what replaces it? The good possibility: more self-aware development of thought and value selection. The bad possibility: more small sub-groups, warring ferociously with one another for survival, and more importantly, supremacy for its own sake. Grog and Oog back at it again.

The Write Stuff by NANCY ROBERTS

The Cheese Trap Cheese. It’s evil. At least, that’s the premise of this surprisingly readable book. And the very fact that it’s readable makes me have second thoughts about it’s merit as nutritional insight. Generally speaking, I prefer my science to be weighty, heavily footnoted, carefully worded, and to not have a potential conflict of interest lurking in the background. Which is not to say that there is any direct evidence that Dr. Barnard is hawking products directly, but his enthusiastic endorsements of alternatives to Devil Cheese do at least raise, for this reader, a small red flag. But, back to the book itself: its premise is simple –we are not made to handle dairy products, whether the milk and milk products come from humans (beyond a certain age), cows, goats, or buffalo. Milk products create digestive issues for many people, and are far to high a dose of everything, from lactose to fat to calcium, for the human body to deal with. Worst of all is cheese, since it is, in essence, a concentrated form of dairy –and often lacks the warning signals that plain milk or ice cream will provide, such as gas and diarrhea (lactose intolerance). Worse, cheese provides a sort of nutritional high that, for many, is actually addictive. The culprit is something called “casomorphin,” and like many compounds that sound or are spelled similarly, casomorphin acts on the brain like an opiate, offering a sense of well-being at the cost of becoming addicted. And that’s what Dr. Barnard claims: cheese is a high fat, low food value, high calorie drug that we add to our diets at our peril. He says that everything from obesity to allergies to low sperm count can be laid at the door of the flavorful treat –and that even a little is too much. One way to know that cheese is addictive, he writes, is to try to eliminate it from your diet. Of course, the same could be said about water, chocolate, bread, or the oddball food favorites many of us fall victim to, from a crunchy carrot to a harmless daily spoonful of peanut butter. However, the many ways in which we consume cheese —from a bite for a snack to a grilled cheese sandwich or a cheesy pizza— is testament to the versatility and satisfying flavor and filling quality of the food. So our ability to leave it alone will also likely have something to do with the many ways it can be used to prepare a meal as well as the many varieties it comes in: hard

In his book Dr. Barnard claims that cheese is a high fat, low food value, high calorie drug that we add to our diets at our peril.

cheeses and soft, melted or chilled, sweet or tangy. It’s one of those gowith-everything choices as well: it’s useful as a dessert, an hors d’oeuvre, to accompany wine or in a stringy snack for little ones. Now, anyone who’s been around for more than a decade or two will have lived through a “never eat this” or “always eat that” food fad for dieters and the health conscious. The old food pyramid was challenged with the Atkins diet, and people who successfully lost weight eating huge portions of meat and other proteins (and eliminating carbohydrates from their diets completely) were then told that the only way to eat was from the carb aisle. Carb-loading was the watchword of those who hit the gym regularly. No, no, no … too much gluten! Gluten is the work of demons in the ground! Go out for dinner with friends and you’ll all be searching the menu for low or no-gluten alternatives. Then Paleo. Then organics: do not touch anything that’s processed. It will have hormones, additives, GMOs and other hidden beasties waiting to kill you from within. You get the picture. For many of us, the ultimate answer was —and probably is— to try to find foods that are as close to “nature” as possible, and eat moderately from a wide variety of them. For Barnard, it’s to hit the nuts and soy heavily. That Tofurky for Thanksgiving – great idea! And cheese can be made with nuts. That’s right, nuts. If you can make milk from almonds, you can make cheese from them, too. He includes some recipes from people who have experimented with making pizza and lasagne using hickory nuts to create the cheese. Of course, I kept wondering, “What about the people who are allergic to tree nuts, and what about the phyto-estrogen link with soy?” The book makes every effort to make a no-cheese (or dairy, or meat) diet sound feasible and even appealing, and I have to acknowledge some of the problems that give even more weight (yeah, puns intended) to his argument: rampant obesity; intolerable cruelty on factory farms; unbalanced diets; an explosion of allergies and auto-immune problems; and, despite more and better healthcare, a general decline in our standards of fitness and good health. While I’d say “read the book,” as some of it will be a cautionary tale of eating less, better and a more balanced diet, I’d also say, read it with a grain of sanity. Not one of the fad diet recommendations has stood the test of time, save perhaps the “eat small portions of many, seasonal foods, grown close to home and prepared to save the nutritional value” recommendation. And do pay attention to what you crave, how often you eat it, and how you feel after consuming it. Your body generally does try to make itself heard!

The Great New York State Fair It’s hard to believe that there’s only 33 days left to get advance sale tickets to the Great New York State Fair! Some people say, “Why bother going, it’s the same thing every year.” Well, I’ve gone almost every year of my life, and I find something new and exciting every year. Dave Bullard, Public Relations and Marketing Manager, stated, “Well, this year’s surprises are smaller, there will still be lots of new things to see. This is Dave’s 5th year in this position, but he’s loved the fair since he was a child –just like most of us. “We’ve made specific changes in some key areas, but they’re not as large as last year’s reveal of the front gate. However, these changes will still enhance these exhibits.” The first thing you’ll notice is that the State Police exhibit will not be outside of the Pepsi Food building anymore. It’s been expanded and is situated just behind the Horticulture building. The log cabin will now be part of the exhibit and feature new displays for the public. Also, they’ve built a new rappelling tower –it’s metal so will not need replacing like the old wooden structure. They also have an air conditioned kennel for our four-legged friends. I’m sure canine patrol will be grateful! Even though the location has changed and some of the exhibits improved, many of your old favorites and the Troopers will remain the same, but be sure to stop by and see what’s new. The next big change this year is in the Indian Village. While many people see the turtle mound as just a dance stage, it’s sacred to our Six Nations friends. Native American legend states that Earth was created on the back of a turtle. Therefore, it’s appropriate that their sacred dances be performed on holy ground. The turtle mound will remain where it is, but it’s been completely rebuilt and will now actually look like a turtle. The Six Nations Agricultural Society is responsible for everything exhibited in the Indian Village, and each year they make it better and better. Many of

The Chevy Court is right in the middle of everything. the buildings in the village will get new roofs so we can enjoy learning more about our country’s Native American culture, and integral to Central New York’s history. These renovations will be the last of the phase one from the $50 million dollars the Governor Cuomo granted for major improvements on the country’s old state fair. Established in 1841, the New York State Fair was the first in America and was strictly based on Agriculture, and much of the Fair holds to that tradition. The 365 acre campus is host to lots of vendors, but the agricultural element is still the main focus. My personal favorites are the Horticulture Building and the Art and Home Center. These exemplify the foundation of the fair, but that’s not the only place where you can see the Fair’s history. If you want to see a living history of the Fair, stop by Grange building which is situated between the Dairy building and the Poultry barn. Although I’m embarrassed to admit that I’ve missed this, I will make sure I don’t miss the historical exhibit this year! Keeping to the Fair’s original mission, animals are a huge part of the Fair. Dave explained that, “Animals always attract people especially baby animals, like baby pigs.

The Great New York State Fair continued from pg 19 Who doesn’t love to see those!” He’s right, of course, because you can stroll through all the barns and talk to the farmers who bring their animals for the various shows and competitions. “We host horse shows all year round, but the best variety of shows is during the Fair. You can see everything from ponies to giant draft horses –there’s something for everyone.” “Changing to the Wade shows for the midway was an excellent decision,” said Dave. They are installing a semi-permanent fixture for the new Sky Ride. Concrete footers will create a more secure foundation for erecting the ride that spans the entire length of the midway –1,400 feet long! The more stable ride will lift you to 35 feet in the air and then gently bring you down at the end of the midway. It’s a great way to see the fair and realize how expansive this operation truly is. There will also be a new ride … A FLUME! I can’t wait to try this and I’m sure it will be well attended during the warm Fair days. “While most of vendors return each year, we do have a couple of new places coming in” stated Dave. “There will be a new Thai place and we’ll now have Anchor Bar Wings out of Buffalo.” Food at the Fair is a great experience –there’s everything from local growers Take the time to find something to regional and state specialties. At the fair you can stroll through all the barns and talk to the farmers who bring their animals for the various shows and competitions. sandwich. While I cringe each year when I hear of the new creation, I’m usually pleasantly surprised that the combination works. This will be the 2nd year without the Grand Stand. I asked Dave how this has affected business at the Fair. “What a lot of people may not have known is that the Grand Stand was a losing operation. We have lost money every year for the last several years.” This part of the Fair was not supported by the State, it had to support itself and it didn’t. “We have to live off the revenue that the Fair makes for such things as salaries, utilities, maintenance and such. Not having the Grand Stand has allowed us to acquire better acts for Chevy Court.” Although not all of the acts have been determined, you can see the diversity the Chevy Court now offers with such acts this year as Bret Michaels and The Family Stone. Governor Cuomo budgets $3.5 million for improvement of the fairgrounds, but that money is reserved for capital expenses such as sewer line or road repairs, roofing or any other type of improvement or repair. Operational expenses is the self-sustaining part of the business. “The Grand Stand could host up to 30,000 visitors, but we attract nearly a ¼ million people to Chevy Court” said Dave. “This helps our vendors because MAY 26 OCTOBER 1 concert goers aren’t off the beaten path, it’s right in the middle of everything.” FRIDAY SUNDAY 11 7 I asked Dave if there will be a phase two, and he said, “Absolutely, but it will be on a smaller scale. What we hope to have in the next phase is a much larger and new Expo center. Again, the Fair is about diversity and our goal is to attract as many people as possible.” While it’s not cast in stone, the Expo Center is the preferred project, but that will be announced as soon as plans are confirmed. Purchases That Pay It Forward Some see fashion as ‘frivolous,’ a waste of time, focus, and resources. However style serves as a thought-provoking art form, reflective of self and society. This makes it an incredible catalyst for change. Many modern companies are harnessing this power and using it to promote a tender heart and genuine care for others. What we wear each day is a choice, an expression of the self. Most of all, that should be a spirit of love and generosity. Trends come and go, but kindness is timelessly beautiful. Here are some brands that both live and dress with intention.

TOMS

Originally named “tomorrow shoes,” TOMS has long been known for their buy one, give one campaign. Their original canvas flats are versatile and simple, but carry a world-changing initiative. For every pair sold, TOMS gives a pair of shoes away to a child in need. “I think the great thing about TOMS is that we make it so easy for people to do something. I think everyone wants serve, everyone wants to give back,” said founder Blake Mycoskie (The Ellen Show). “We’re looking to expand to many different products so that people can give back with all of their purchases.” TOMS has not only expanded their breadth of designs (they now carry sunglasses), but also their giving, putting money towards finding cures for diseases, providing water, and more.

In the U.S., feminine care products like tampons and pads are easy to take for granted, but in third world countries, a lack of sanitary options has derailed the futures of many girls. Without the proper care, they will use any materials they can find including newspapers, rags, leaves, and tree bark to absorb blood. Due to embarrassment, they will frequently stay home from school. My Mind To Yours

by DEBRA MERRYWEATHER

Plotting That New Course Here are some facts, not alternative facts, about golf. Most golf guidebooks recommend using a longer club when hitting uphill, in humidity, over water, over long distances or for any combination of these conditions. A golfer’s strength and self-awareness are subjective qualities that should guide club selection and golf course selection; we in Central New York are fortunate to have many nice courses including, for those who like a walk in the park, Burnet and Sunnycrest Golf Courses in the City of Syracuse. All my life, I’ve had zero interest in golf. Then, on impulse, I decided to try to hit golf balls at a driving range to improve my hand eye coordination and I hoped, improve my brain function. A golf pro watching me not hit golf balls suggested he could help me hit some so I took a couple lessons and then took myself to a golf course, still, only to improve my physical coordination, not to play golf itself. It was after needing physical therapy years before that I first learned that my right side is weaker than the left likely due to an old head injury of which I was not aware and for which my body had been compensating. Fortunately, I had unintentionally but steadily been improving my mind body coordination through yoga and the repetitive bilateral motion of cross country skiing and inline skating. Research suggests that bilateral motion

Still, on the course, I often chip when I should pitch. One thing I always need to remember is that I started golfing as a senior citizen and I’ll never be a consistent powerful golfer. Golfing may however, help my brain to help me. Memory is important. I try to remember that one should align one’s feet to the clubface after the clubface has been aligned toward the target. The golfer often needs to pick the right target before aligning everything else. Focus and forethought is required. How well anyone focuses on anything involves multiple internal and external factors. At home, my Facebook feed sometimes updates me on how many golf games the current president has played since taking office. I wonder: does the president think about peoples’ health while he is trying to birdie a hole? If I think about medical care, or, when I’m hoping to par, think about the president thinking about peoples’ healthcare, I often find that I get to swing, pitch, chip and putt many more times than I’d planned. At first glance, Jessica DeSiato seemed to be just like any other girl her age. She liked fast cars, shopping, hanging with friends and having a good time. You would have never noticed or even guessed that Jessica was hiding something, but she was. In 2012 and at 210 pounds, she was the heaviest she had ever been and she hated herself. She remembers having no choice but to buy a size 19. Feeling beyond frustrated and with so many different emotions running through her head she turned to food for comfort. It seemed like a never ending cycle of “eating her feelings.” In an effort to help, her father and coworker Jen suggested she join weight watchers, but she wanted nothing to do with it at the time. Feeling lonely, depressed and helpless Jess turned to alcohol. She hit what she calls her “rock bottom” when she started to drink more than she knew she should. In January of 2013 EVERYTHING CHANGED. Jessica didn’t want to live inside this body that she hated anymore and she didn’t want to feel like this for one more day. Enough was enough and without hesitation she joined weight watchers. She figured she had nothing to lose but money and weight, right? When Jessica started to see some of the weight come off it motivated her to work even harder. She started running with Fleet Feet Sports and completed three 5ks. Shortly thereafter, she met Mike Halsey. He suggested she start incorporating weight training into her regimen. He told her that if she started lifting she would get better results and see the changes in her physique faster. In July 2014 Jess Got to Lifetime with Weight Watchers at 130 pounds. Now that she was living a healthier lifestyle and spending more time at the gym, she started to have new interests; one being bodybuilding. She was fascinated by the transformations people made to their physiques and knew she had what it took to prepare for a show. She knew there was a place for her up on that stage. Unfortunately, her Mom became sick, and between that, school and moving, life got complicated and she had to put her dream on hold. In January of 2015 she met and started working with Kevin Parker

Transformed continued from pg 27 towards competing in her 1st show. On the day of her show, Jess weighed in a lean 106 pounds and ended up placing 3rd debut, 5th novice and 5th open. Overall, she was very happy with the success of her first competition. It was a roller coaster from there on out. On more than one occasion, she took a few steps backwards, gained a few unwanted pounds and had a difficult time controlling what she ate, especially at nighttime. She competed in another show in November of 2015 and didn’t even place. Though it was a learning experience, it was a disappointment. She knew that she wasn’t anywhere near ready to compete and realized she should have sat this one out. She remembers crying when she walked off stage. It was time to try a different approach. Jessica took a year off and focused on putting on muscle and rebuilding her metabolism. During this time she continued to struggle with her weight and still had a difficult time controlling what she ate at nighttime. It got to a point where it was so bad that none of her clothes fit. She found herself in a place physically and emotionally that she had been before and it wasn’t a good feeling. In March of 2017, Jessica got a new coach, Brian Devins and everything changed. She was more than ready to compete and was prepared to do what it took to be successful. In one way or another, she looked at this upcoming show as her REDEMPTION TO HERSELF. She had learned to love herself again, the urge to binge at nighttime was gone and she started seeing the changes in her physique she knew she needed to be a top contender. In June of 2017 Jessica competed in a huge show with 50 other bikini competitors. She placed 2nd in Novice out of 7 and 3rd in the Open out of 8, just 2 placings away from going pro! Jess couldn’t have been any happier with her success. Today, Jessica is focusing on nursing school. She knows her time to go pro will come. Her goals are to maintain, grow and become an RN. She also plans on continuing to be a big support system for her Mom (who has lost 16 pounds) and sister who is also on an active weight loss journey. To date, her sister has lost 72 pounds. She works out regularly with Jess at the gym and plans to lose

In Conclusion:

Jessica knows full well that someone has to want it to be successful. She also realizes that with hard work, dedication and discipline goals can be crushed and dreams can come true! Yes she lost weight, but more importantly she has gained so much confidence and happiness. She has found a place where she belongs and a true Jessica with coach Brian Devins. passion for health, wellness and bodybuilding. We can all learn a thing or two from Jessica. Never let a stumble be the end of your journey. In life we will all fall down from time to time, it’s what we do when we get back up that really matters. Word on the Street by BILL MCCLELLAN

Juanita Perez Williams for Mayor Someone special has entered the arena. After the election, rather than a footnote in a campaign you will find that you are the focus of the heart of a great leader. What you read here will become deed. I had the opportunity to meet Juanita Perez Williams in a previous campaign and was quickly drawn to her sense of fairness and her strong dedication to that fairness. In keeping with this, Juanita demonstrates in all of her thinking the one quality that has always impressed me and is too often lacking in leadership. And that is an understanding of and respect for the interests of everyone, without bias, no matter what your income, your look or your address. I want to note up front for all Veterans, and of course in so doing for all of us, that Juanita Perez Williams served in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. She has felt the chills of greatness serving along with her fellow soldiers. Her salute is crisp and full of heart when she hears the music of our great land. She understands the hallowed duty of those that wear the uniform. Juanita fully understands why we are a great nation. Juanita is a Mexican American Woman, and will be the first to serve as a Mayor in New York State. Juanita is one of the genuinely talented few. With Juanita as Mayor our town will become a beacon for others to

Please be assured, Juanita is endorsed by the Public Employees Federation (PEF), the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers Local 195, the Latino Professional Network (LPN) and Votes Vets PAC. In 2016 Juanita received the prestigious “Friends of Labor Award” from the Greater Syracuse Labor Council. Your work is part of Juanita’s family history. Juanita’s Mom and Dad worked hard in the Farmworkers Movement that gave birth to the United Farmworkers Union which became part of the AFL-CIO. Juanita Perez Williams for Mayor continued from pg 30

greed and that is what Juanita is all about. Juanita was also endorsed by the Mayors of Utica, Auburn, Cortland and Tully. That those of such stature favor Juanita as Mayor of Syracuse shows high and deserved praise. We have an amazing individual running for Mayor. Regular readers are aware that I am a believer in “the best that human can be in politics.” Nothing short of this will respect the well off and protect the less well off at the same time. Juanita will surround herself and the city with this kind of If you are looking for a Mayor thinking and every individual will that cares about you. Juanita Perez move forward, as it should be, proud Williams is that Mayor. Americans working for this great land. Pride and patriotism will once again prevail in the hallowed halls of City Hall and every decision will be made with the fairness that will make our founders proud. I urge you to visit www.JuanitaforMayor.com. Juanita has already laid out a 100 day plan. I was quickly drawn to the uniquely well targeted, embracing and fair approach toward our city’s needs. In clear and concise language Juanita explains our cities needs and prioritizes in a way that you can visualize these things happening. As you peruse this plan you will be taken by the wisdom and the compassion and you will note as I have that Juanita is an all too rare leader; a leader that we must have the wisdom to embrace while she is in our presence. In all that she does there is a passion and sincerity that sets the standard. One can sense in her ideas that compassion, justice and your well-being are behind every thought. Many are concerned about Consolidation. The following is the kind of thinking that will restore our city to the quality of living that has been too long neglected for those and by those that live here. We will not forgo decisions to others that should be ours. This is a Mayor that will expose any and all weaknesses in all plans that involve our city. She will show the inadequacies and they will not happen. Juanita will fully engage with the Onondaga County and Syracuse Industrial Development Agencies regarding any potential consolidation. Juanita said: “I plan to be a Mayor who prior to finding solutions will first assess the factors behind a problem. While consolidation may be an option when considering costs, a thorough review of any activity to be merged, must be conducted to ensure such a move has a beneficial response. If we jump too quickly it could have a negative impact on overall services causing more problems. A great example is zoning. -As a county-city effort it hasn’t worked. Just ask any business owner who has tried to pull a building permit, or simply count the number of Family Dollar Stores lined up in our neighborhoods. While the towns and villages of Onondaga County each utilize personal zoning control for the betterment of their streets and industries, the city of Syracuse has to adhere to the county. The result is county staff who don’t live in our city with significant authority to arbitrarily agitate business, weaken our neighborhoods and forgo opportunity for good local jobs. Consolidation should be the last option if we want the best for Syracuse. Police, Fire and City Departments can look forward to a new era of fairness and concern for their needs. This will be foremost as Juanita believes in moving forward as a high spirited team that cares about each other as well as their charge. Esprit Décor will be earned and soon all will move forward with restored pride and dedication. City workers will walk tall and proud understanding their contribution to our great city. Citizens will soon take note as Juanita restores values in keeping with the ongoing pursuit of American greatness. What has been on your mind? Crime … just look at Juanita’s Website and hope will flourish. (Halting the heroin scourge and recovery will be foremost.) Streets, Sidewalks and Water pipes (There will be no Flint in Syracuse) and other infrastructure … All in the plan. Juanita will implement Quality of Life Blight Busting

Juanita Perez Williams is a Mexican American Woman, and will be the first to serve as a Mayor in New York State. Juanita is one of the genuinely talented few.

which will clean and beautify block by block and park by park in our communities. Juanita will conduct a block by block analysis (all 1,884 city blocks). This process will address urgent issues in real time and develop block by block plans to address the needs of every block. Juanita will seek ample neighborhood friendly, (no price gouging) well managed, and necessary businesses such as quality grocery and convenience stores, hardware stores, beauty shops, quality drug stores and so on, in the communities. She will determine Community appropriate transportation needs and work with Centro to insure work compatible scheduling is in place. Juanita will seriously globally market our city by clearly showing our attractive assets. She will highlight our unique New York State and East coast rail, road and air, crossroads location. She will highlight our work force diversity (skilled craftsman, precision manufacturing and advanced instrumentation and more). Juanita sees we have what business wants and needs. We must have the ability to show them. If your hopes are not here, they are in the plan. This is “amazing missing thinking” that requires a Mayor that cares about you. Juanita is that Mayor. Her 100 day plan will inspire you. Juanita is Mexican-American. Her grandparents migrated from Guanajuato, Mexico. Her parents played an important role in her life, always struggling to make ends meet however devoted to activism in the Farmworkers Movement. As a child, Juanita participated in one of the first Early Head-Start programs, she was a recipient of free student lunches, attended college through the Equal Opportunity Program and in 1986 received her undergraduate degree from the University of California, San Diego. Juanita is the mother of 4 grown children and a grandmother. She sits on several Central New York Boards including Onondaga County Catholic Charities, La Liga (Spanish Action League), Clear Path for Veterans, CNY Workforce Investment Board, Bishop Ludden High School Trustee, she is co-founder of UMEA, the new minority chamber of commerce, and is a proud member of the Valley American Legion. Here she handled high profile criminal cases. Juanita was selected by then Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton to be a member of the New York State Military Selection Review Board In 2008. Upon completion of her military service, Juanita worked for 7 years at the New York State Education Department as the Regional Director for “The Office of Professions.” It was here she joined the PEF Union. Juanita and her staff of Law Enforcement Professionals were responsible for investigating and prosecuting New York State Licensed Professionals. Juanita then accepted a legal position with Syracuse University. Juanita served as an adjunct professor teaching legal issues in higher education. The Handmaid’s Tale After years of developing original content, it appears that the streaming service Hulu has finally found its marquee series. Scoring an impressive 8 Emmy nominations and emerging as a timely and terrifying viewing experience, THE HANDMAID’S TALE easily ranks amongst the best television programs of the year. Set in a modern iteration of the United States where society as we know it is a thing of the past, a woman named Offred (Elizabeth Moss) has been stripped of everything that she holds dear. Her husband has been murdered, her daughter has been taken from her, and she must live a life that is dictated by others. In Offred’s world, most women have lost the ability to bear children. Those who are still fertile are a rarity, and forced into a life of sexual slavery. Stripped of their rights in regards to their own thoughts, actions, and decisions, they are placed in the homes of rich, important people. There, they are subjected to a bizarre, unsettling mating ritual, where pleasure has been eradicated and the need to reproduce has become an obsession. THE HANDMAID’S TALE is structured in a way that is reminiscent of ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK. Bouncing between current events and those that have happened in the past, it tells a number of different stories that weave together to create a disturbing, haunting narrative. Highlighting how

Thought-provoking, thrilling, and exuding an ability to push boundaries and get under the skin of its viewer, Hulu’s masterful series The Handmaid’s Tale has instantly become one of the best shows on television.

quickly society can crumble, and the relative ease in which the population would accept this collapse, it is a bleak and uncomfortably believable vision of what could happen if Americans simply sat back and watched the nation spiral out of control. The ensemble cast is phenomenal, with Ann Dowd (as the ruthless Aunt Lydia), Samira Wiley (as Offred’s friend from before the fall of civilization) and Alexis Bledel (as a fellow, tortured Handmaid) all earning Emmy nominations. Moss, best known for her co-starring role in MAD MEN, looks to be the favorite heading into the Emmy’s for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Her character is not without her flaws, but speaks to the audience in a way that is blunt and honest. She makes difficult, and at times, deplorable decisions that blur the line between heroism and neglect. Her struggle is palpable, and as she attempts to navigate this fearful new world, it is difficult to second-guess some of her actions, whether you agree with them or not. There is social commentary abound throughout the entirety of this debut season, and forces the viewer to question what they would do if placed in this precarious position. The flashback sequences are just as strong and unnerving as those taking place after the collapse, and strike a chord of realism that makes HANDMAID’S TALE far more frightening than anything we’ve seen in AMERICAN HORROR STORY. Without being overtly political or taking stances against current policies or agendas, it is nevertheless a brazen warning shot against intolerance and beleaguered acceptance. Thought-provoking, thrilling, and exuding an ability to push boundaries and get under the skin of its viewer, Hulu’s masterful series has instantly become one of the best shows The Handmaid’s Tale S1: Aon television.
