When I moved here to Syracuse about 5 years ago I was a guy who had to start all over in a new music city that doesn’t know me. On the west coast I had 30 years of building up my deal, so it was no longer difficult to get shows or sell records. I never really had to call for a gig in my last several years there.... I just answered emails or the phone and said “yes” or “no.” The name of the game when you go to a city where you are anonymous is to start making friends. The first person I made myself known to was Dave Frisina on the advice of my old pal Bruce Clayton. And while some of the doors I was knocking on would reply, “never heard of you, go away...” Dave spun my record at the very next airing of his show. The song was called “Sixteen Seconds,” and it includes an instrumental passage that I designed to last for 16 seconds. No one ever got that, including my band. Dave listened to this song and emailed me referencing that exact passage and that he thought it was neat. I was blown away. Blown away because this tells me he’s really listening. After all, who listens closely in our fast-moving, microwave-quick, low attention span world, anymore.?

Obviously, I was an instant fan of Dave because, for him, it really is about the music. Since then I’ve regarded him as the most important human energy in Syracuse’s original music. And while music scenes everywhere are replete with critics who are above going out to enjoy or encourage music, it seems like every time I go out to see live music, there he is, right over there hanging out, talking with musicians. He’s not trying to be attached to anyone else’s fame or momentum or buzz. Dave digs music. Dave digs Syracuse music. A total fan. He’s keeping a very important art form alive and well from his corner of the listening world. And you should be grateful you have him here. You know him well if you listen to the radio. Probably more than I do. Here’s your chance to know him a little bit more in our candid conversation. CS: Hi Dave. How are’ya? DF: I’m doing well, Chuck, thanks. CS: Thanks for doing this interview. DF: Thank you. Happy to do it. CS: I think your story begins in Long Island: Did your interest in music begin there? How’d you get to Syracuse? DF: My interest in music began there as I started playing trumpet in 4th grade, then switched to baritone horn in 8th grade. Through high school I was in Symphonic Band, Marching Band and Jazz Band . My interest in radio was listening to WABC out of NYC on a transistor radio. Later, listening to WLIR and WNEW-fm. CS: How did you get to Syracuse? DF: I got to Syracuse via Cortland State, where I graduated as a Phys. Ed. Major. I had also been part of the staff of the student run radio station, WSUC. While looking for a teaching job I heard about a station in Syracuse signing on (95X in 1978) and applied for a weekend position. CS: You have quite tenure in Syracuse radio. Tell us about your history as a deejay. DF: From weekends on 95X, I was ‘promoted’ to overnights. Eventually

Dave Frisina continued from pg 3 network (3p-8p ET). CS: The good work pays off. Please share a few highlights in your career path. DF: Believe it or not, it was a highlight early in my career to be the station mascot, the 95X Rockin Rooster. Being nominated for Music Director of the Year and PD of the year by Billboard and Radio & Records Magazine was a nice acknowledgement. But, being inducted into the SAMMY’s Hall of Fame

was certainly been a career highlight, along with serving as MC for the Hall of Fame ceremony for the past few years. Hosting my (freeform) “Soulshine show on Sunday’s (from 10a-2p) and Local music on “Soundcheck’ since ’79 (Sunday’s 9-10p) has been extra rewarding. Building The Rebel into the station that it is and continuing to expand its programming is the most fun (and work) I’ve had in my career. CS: I like it when deejays get to call the plays. I listen to your shows often because of exactly that. Thanks for doing that style of programming. How has the Syracuse music scene changed and/or evolved during your career, here. DF: There were bigger crowds of younger people (which started to change when drinking age was raised) and the bands had more production elements (light techs and sound ). Plus, the clubs advertised and promoted the bands more (and that was pre-internet.) There was a shift to more free admission shows just to get people in the door, and lately there seems to be growth in the amount of venues & events that are booking bands, but the younger audience (18-30’s) hasn’t really come back around in the ‘live’ music club scene. CS: Been nice riding your bike in December? DF: This year has been exceptionally favorable for late-season riding, I’ll be out Christmas Eve! CS: Tell us what music means to Dave Frisina. DF: It’s a creative audio expression, an escape, a communal experience and a connection to a common positive pulse. And it’s fun to dance & sing along, too. CS: As a musician in this scene I say, “THANk YOU,” for putting the time, effort and love into local music the way you do. You’ve been doing this for a long time. Elaborate on the what and why’s, please. DF: I’ve been fortunate to be in a position to be able to promote something that I believe in, and make lifelong friends along the way. I understand how great it feels to play music, individually & as part of a band, as well as being an involved spectator. I’m a music fan. Star Wars: The Force Awakens When I made my way up to Regal Cinemas at Destiny USA on December 17, I expected to see lines wrapped around the entire level. This was, after all, the moment that I and countless others had been waiting for. STAR WARS was finally here. To my surprise, the lines weren’t all that long. There were folks sporting Yoda ears, rocking Han Solo jackets, and there were plenty of Princess Leia hairdos, but, I was surprised at how few people were there. It was 6:15pm, and the show started at 7:00. Where was everyone?! Well, as it turns out, the people I had expected to see were already in the theater. What I was looking at was the line that had

begun to form for the 9:00pm show. After months of waiting, what would a few more hours matter if it ensured you a prime seat at the movie event of the year? Opening night of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS was every bit the spectacle that I had hoped it would be. This was more than just a movie, it was an event. Despite the air of electric excitement, there was a tangible sense of fear. Would the quality of the new production be on par with the legendary original series? Or, would audiences be left with the hollow feeling they felt when they walked out of the theater at the conclusion of THE PHANTOM MENACE? With director JJ Abrams at the helm, and original cast members Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill back on board, there was certainly reason to believe that the franchise would find its footing once again. When the show time finally arrived, the screen went black, the STAR WARS emblem blazed across the screen and the familiar opening notes of John Williams iconic score blasted throughout the cinema. At this point, the capacity crowd erupted in rapturous applause. This, as I would soon learn, wasn’t to be the last time that the audience let loose exclamations of unadulterated joy. It seemed impossible for THE FORCE AWAKENS to live up to its own unrelenting hype, but in the end, it certainly did. From the first scene to the last, Abrams’ film is every bit as exciting, entertaining, and gratifying as Call any STAR WARS fan could ever hope ahead for it would be. Prior to its release, details about the production were sparse, something that is very rare in the modern spoiler-heavy entertainment world. I, like the majority of others watching on action is fast-paced and electrifying, and most importantly, watching the opening night, had no idea what was going to unfold, and how Ford, Fisher, flick provides over two hours of sheer entertainment. This production is a prime example of why we love going to the movies; escapism at its best. It is and Hamill would fit in to the picture. These unfolding discoveries aided heavily in the resounding success of THE FORCE AWAKENS, and I refuse to be a prime example of what big-budget blockbusters should be, and I’m hoping this is just the magnificent first glimpse into the future wonderment that is the one who spills any more of the beans. The reason this incarnation of STAR WARS works so well isn’t due to some to come. A special thanks goes to Regal Cinemas at Destiny USA for allowing me to see glorious sense of nostalgic gratification. While it is true that it was wonderful this month’s film. to see the original cast members back in action, it was even more satisfying to see them do well. What’s Old is New Again Bell-bottoms, skinny jeans, pixie cuts, and vinyl records are just a few trends that have come and gone throughout the years. The list goes on and on of things that go in and out and back in during our lifetime. When it comes to beer, the same holds true. While our society in general is used to light lagers and the occasional IPA, there are some kinds of specialty beers that have been revived in relatively recent years. Take for instance the gruit. I have read about them extensively and had one at a beer bar in Washington, D.C. but didn’t know it. A recent visit to Beau’s All Natural Brewing Co. in Ontario, Canada was another delightful reintroduction to the gruit, a beer with many variations. A gruit is basically a beer that does not use hops, but instead uses herbs such as myrtle, heather, and yarrow to name a few. It isn’t known exactly when gruits were brewed, but this ancient tradition seems to stem from Continental Europe around the Middle Ages. Hops were introduced to beer from around the 11th to 16th centuries (according to Wikipedia). My introduction to gruits was a heavenly concoction by the name of Fraoch Heather Ale, brewed by Williams Brothers Brewing Company in Scotland. This ale is available here in Central New York; you just have to look for it. Before I knew what a gruit was, I secretly wished that there were beers infused with herbs, rose petals and the like. With craft brewers becoming more and more

experimental, avoiding things such as artificial lime flavors like some big brewers use, many herbs and interesting combinations are produced on a regular basis. One of the world’s oldest beer styles, Sahti, is a Finnish ale that uses a combination of unmalted and malted grains, flavored with juniper berries and filtered with juniper twigs. The Kalevala, a national epic poem that in part pays homage to its beer brewing tradition is a testament to its importance in Finnish culture. I have yet to try a true Sahti, but American breweries have had their experimentation with it, such as Dogfish Head’s Sah’Tea, Boston Beer Company’s Norse Legend Sahti, and Goose Island Company’s Sahti to name a few. At Beau’s in Canada, I tried two delicious variations of their Bog Water, a gruit made with bog myrtle. Beau’s has received significant recognition for their gruit: “Beau’s has made a name for itself with gruits the brewery introduced Bog SUPER BOWL PARTY! since Water in 2008, which is made with bog SUNDAY, FEB. 7 myrtle harvested by an Algonquin native from the wilds of northern Quebec instead of hops.” (The Ottawa Citizen, Jan. 30, 2014) Gruit has become such popular style that February 1st is ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT aInternational Gruit Day, which started in 2013 when craft brewers declared it as such to raise awareness of the gruit Mon- Thur $ 95 and to praise the historical traditions of 11am-3pm Only brewing with botanicals. However, WT Brews in Baldwinsville (a New York State Farm Brewery opened to the public in 2014 by Founder Mike Johnson and beer brewed by Rich Pinkowski) revived the Grodziskie locally and it has received rave reviews since its release. Honestly, I am not a fan of any smoked beer, but WT’s Grodziskie immediately won me over. If you haven’t tried it yet, head out to their new tasting room at 3 West Genesee Street in downtown Baldwinsville. Trust me, it’s worth the drive. You can get it on tap or buy a few bottles for yourself or to give as a great gift. Sorry, but I’m keeping my Grodziskie! There are so many other wonderful styles that embody the “what’s old is new again” concept along with completely experimental new craft beers that are popping up everywhere around the country. If you haven’t tried some traditional European beers in awhile or these revived styles, I highly suggest you give your palate a wonderfully new experience that is traditions old. You don’t need to put on vintage clothing or listen to vinyl to enjoy nouveau old style beers – it’s all new to you! Cheers!

American Heroes The Blue Line - Perspective In 2014, 117 Police officers were killed in the line of duty. The average is 162. Each Year there are 58,930 assaults against Police resulting in 15,404 Police injuries. There were 16,121 murders in the United States in 2014. There were 2.1 million emergency department visits for assault, 21,007 rapes, 94,403 Robberies, (which include physical force) 237,934 burglaries, 1,238,190 larcenies, 68,422 auto thefts, 498,666 violent crimes, 1,561,231 drug impaired violations, 102,336 offenses against family and children, 1,117,852 driving under the influence, 414,854 drunkenness arrests, and 436,014 arrests for disorderly conduct. In virtually every instance there are victims and human suffering. In virtually every instance a Police Officer became involved. In every statistic, and look at these numbers, guns are often involved. A rare breed of hero, one that loves his/her country and all that it stands for, steps up to every single one of these incidents. Regardless of danger. Tough as Nails, Heart of Gold.” ing is necessary to save life, incidents that should not be are comparatively very rare. And it should be said that any difficulty is a Chief and Mayoral problem and not a rank and file problem. I have not heard the media say this even once. They blanket blame on those brave Americans that look evil in the eye (guns, knives punks and gang members, rapist and murderers) and say “No”. Not in my land. Over my dead body. An emotional media has reached highly inappropriate levels of avoiding truth and fact. They falsely indoctrinate the citizens of America with suspicion rather than respect, appreciation, and honor. The damage they do is untold and the need for ratings creates an oblivious attitude as they gravely and wrongly harm the very character of the finest in the land. Perspective is totally missing. Perspective is what this is about. The difficulties that the media is saturating you with are less than 1/100th of 1 percent of Police. No one has told you that. That leaves 99 and 99/100 percent of Police that bravely and with great honor are risking their lives protecting us and our children. It is not wrong for the media to pick up on public complaints. It is wrong without balancing with perspective. It is wrong to exploit heroes for ratings. You might hear a rare nod of a few words saying that most Police are doing a fine job and then prolonged saturating coverage of a negative incident. The result has been that all are demeaned. Recklessly in every town and city. Perspective protecting the rest and protecting their reputation has not been a concern. And that is the problem. In this vulture culture, once a story is found it is then told repeatedly in a way that sells, MON-TH truth, right and honest perspective 11AM-10PM be damned. This is sad and wrong, it FRI-SAT offends the brave and elite, and harms 11AM-11PM our country...so a little more about SUN 12PM-10PM what is really going on: “No cape, no secret identity, not faster than a speeding bullet, we’re not super heroes, we are real men DELIVERY • TAKEOUT • CATERING and woman, sworn to protect and 10% OFF YOUR FIRST CATERING JOB serve our city, our neighborhoods and WWW.BVILLEPIZZERIA.COM communities. Tales from the Vine by CASSANDRA HARRINGTON
New Year, New Logo, Same Great Wine I am proud to announce that in December, the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail launched a new logo, making the most dramatic change to its visual identity since the organization’s inception in 1983. A year ago, when I accepted the position as director, a new logo was on my list of things to do. It was time for the Trail to have a fresh new image that reflected who we are as a unified group of passionate wine makers, many of whom have been part of the New York wine industry since long before the Finger Lakes began attracting attention as a notable wine region. After a thorough proposal process, the Trail contracted with Clark CSM Marketing Communications in Pittsford, NY to help construct an updated visual representation of their identity in the form of a new logo and brand image. Per Glenn Clark, President of Clark CSM, “Wine trails in the Finger Lakes face the unique challenge of having to differentiate themselves from similar trails with excellent but similar wines on similar lakes. And while it’s true that Finger Lakes wines continue to earn critical acclaim around the world, it’s another matter to help consumers understand what’s special about the

When we started looking at the characteristics that were unique to the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail, themes around tradition and heritage kept showing up, and in fact Cayuga Lake had the first wine trail in America. Ultimately it became clear to us that the most powerful way to differentiate the brand in the mind of the consumer was to celebrate its longevity and history.” The design elements of the new file contain the “vine to wine” concept from the former logo, a weathered look and the words “America’s First” for authenticity, and is in the shape of a seal, exemplifying the quality of product produced by our members. Cayuga Lake wineries pioneered the wine trail concept, which has been mimicked by numerous organized trails across the country ever since. Many of the founding members of the Trail are still involved, working alongside their small team in all aspects from harvest and production to sales and marketing. Their hands-on approach to running their wineries sets the stage for friendly service and handcrafted products, sealed with their personal approval. Myself and the sixteen member wineries invite everyone to visit in order to truly experience what sets the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail apart from its neighbors. Santangelo’s continued from pg 11 There are a lot of chicken and veal options (Parmigiana, Marsala, or Francaise to name a few). The seafood selections are unbeatable, try the Haddock Italiano with broiled haddock with sautéed peppers, onions, clam broth and mushrooms in a stewed tomato, wine sauce served over fettuccine, topped with Asiago cheese. Since Santangelo’s is and has always been a family ran and owned restaurant they have signature specials based on family members’ favorite recipes. Try the Grilled Filet Alita (a sliced filet served with a shiitake port wine sauce over garlic mashed potatoes), the Primavera Ala Camille (broccoli, roasted peppers and mushrooms in marinara sauce over fettuccine topped with fresh mozzarella), or the Stuffed Veal Raymo (veal stuffed with prosciutto, spinach and artichoke hearts in a tomato marsala wine sauce with mushrooms and mozzarella cheese, served over fettuccine). Lastly, whatever you do be sure to save room for one of their many mouth-watering desserts! My friend Keri and I went to Santangelo’s on an unseasonably warm December night. We were immediately greeted by the friendly hostess and given a cozy booth wherein we would enjoy a fantastic deal. We immediately noticed the window decorations, each window was decorated with a holiday theme, and we were sitting at the adorable Grinch theme window! We were starving so we decided to start with two appetizers, first we had the Samuel’s Sampler with savory Santangelo’s food is so fantastic that Clams Casino, freshly breaded Fried Mozzarella, it speaks for itself and at Santangelo’s the best Fried Calamari in town and heaping everyone is treated like a good friend Stuffed Mushrooms. We also couldn’t pass up the or family. Call to place an order or to daily appetizer special of lightly breaded, super make reservations 457-444 creamy goat cheese served with bruschetta and lightly toasted bread. Both appetizer were mouth-watering perfection. For an entrée I decided on the Addie Ala Vodka Sauce, with penne pasta with mushrooms and peas in a vodka cream sauce and topped with delicious grilled shrimp. The vodka sauce was the perfect combination of cream and tomato that paired perfectly with the jumbo shrimp. Keri decided on the 12 oz Delmonico Steak topped with sautéed mushrooms in a seasoned wine au jus, served with a large side of garlic mashed potatoes. There was no need for a steak knife, the wonderfully cut of Delmonico and the perfect cooking made this steak tender and juicy and cut like butter. It was perfection on a plate. Although we were stuffed, Santangelo’s has some of the best desserts in town. We decided to split a homemade raspberry cannoli and a lemon mascarpone cake with berries. These desserts were a stupendous end to one of the best meal’s we’d had in a while! At Santangelo’s you can always count on generous heaping portions and low prices thus making Santangelo’s the perfect place for a large family gathering. The cozy atmosphere and fantastic wine selection makes Santangelo’s the perfect destination for that long overdue date night. With their updated banquet room, complete with a fireplace, Santangelo’s is ideal location for all of your private party needs. They all have humbling stories to tell that if known would make us, often very sad but always, all so proud: Syracuse Police Officer Wallie Howard Jr. was shot and killed during an undercover drug investigation. He was working with the Drug Enforcement Administration and was attempting to purchase narcotics from two drug dealers. The two suspects shot and killed Officer Howard as they attempted to rob him of the money. Officer Howard is survived by his mother, fiancé and two children. Syracuse Police Officer and Army Medic Tom Santmeyer was decorated for tending to the wounded while under fire in Iraq. Tom navigated bullets pinging off the sand and metal around him as he went from soldier to soldier, dragging them to safer position and performing the emergency attention that would keep them alive. Another year has come and gone, and as we count down to 2016 we wonder if this year will be any different from the last. Before we turn the page, there are a few questions we must ask. What have we learned? How have we changed? What can we improve? How can we prevent the things that went wrong from happening again? One thing that is always at the top of our list when we make our annual New Year’s Resolution is our health. Although we have good intentions, it always seems to get pushed aside by the end of the year. The quote “I no longer believe in New Year’s resolutions. I believe in daily resolutions” seems to fit perfectly here. If you’re really serious about making a change, why wait to make a New Year’s Resolution? When we consider what we did in 2015 to stay healthy and fit we’re less than impressed with our commitment to follow through. Based on our performance we definitely won’t be nominated for any award and we sealed that deal when the holiday season rolled around. We needed neither that second serving nor the extra round of drinks. Yet we indulged. We planned on getting to the gym three to four days a week. We barely made it once. We planned on getting rid of the garbage in our cabinets and fridge. There’s more now than there was to begin with. If you’re shaking your head with disappointment, you’re not alone. You’re amongst the millions of people who are less than satisfied with their excess body weight and sluggish physical condition at the turn of the calendar year. In

to your goals, you can’t expect to reach them! Instead of focusing on the end result, focus on losing a few pounds at a time. • Be specific about your goals. Saying that you want to lose weight is way too vague. You need to set specific goals, such as “I want to lose ten pounds in six weeks” or “I want to run a mile in a month.” • Have a plan. Say things like, “I’m going to take Spin Class three times a week” or “I am going to eat smaller portions at each meal.” When you establish a plan to reach your goal you will be more likely to hold yourself accountable. continued on pg 18
R.I.P. R.M.
Here are a few simple tips to help you get started on your journey to success: • Be Realistic. The surest way to fall short of your goal is to have unrealistic expectations. This can make your goal hard to reach and unattainable. For instance, resolving to never eat ice cream again is just not realistic. Instead, strive for a goal that you can stick with, such as having ice cream once a week instead of every night. • Make a commitment. Though you may have good intentions, sticking with a weight loss program is a lot of hard work. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. You have to approach it as you would a job. It is your responsibility to show up, do the work, and give it your all. • Don’t beat yourself up! Obsessing over the occasional slip won’t help you achieve your goal. Repeat after me: One minor slip-up does not mean your attempt to lose weight was a failure! Don’t judge your success on the basis of “one bad day” or “one bad meal.” Stay focused on the bigger picture. • Keep a food journal. You’ve probably heard this a thousand times, but keeping a food journal is a vital part of staying motivated. If you don’t eat according

You can take advantage of the group fitness classes they have and even hire a personal trainer to help steer you in the right direction. Check out the special rates and numerous classes at Champions Fitness Center in Cicero! It’s a fitness facility that has something for everybody. • Find a gym buddy. Play dates are always fun! Experts say it takes about twenty one days for a new activity to become a habit and six months for it to become a permanent part of your personality. So give it time! Never use a slip up as an excuse to throw in the towel. • Reward Yourself. Keep track of each small success. Shortterm goals are easier to keep, and each small accomplishment will help keep you motivated. Every time you reach a small goal celebrate your success by treating yourself to something you really enjoy besides food. Your modem connected to the phone line - dialed a particular number when invoked, you got that fun sound, and voila, the World Wide Web. Pre-Wedding Beauty Tips You want everything to be picture perfect for your wedding, including your smile. But like everything else about your big day, that perfect smile could require some work ahead of time. In fact, experts suggest starting your entire beauty regimen six months before the wedding.
FOR 9 YEARS STRAIGHT!
Here’s a complete pre-wedding beauty checklist! Lips:
Get soft, kissable lips by brushing away flakes of dry skin with an infant toothbrush soaked in baking soda and water. Apply healing ointment, and in no time, your lips will be ready for that “kiss the bride” kiss.
Skin:
Make your face glow with a good cleansing program. Use a cleanser that’s appropriate for your skin type in the morning, makeup remover and cleanser at night and a daily moisturizer. Use a gentle facial scrub once a week.
Makeup:
Women with warm skin tones look best in makeup with pink, coral, peach, amber, brown and red with yellow undertones. If you have a cool skin tone, choose pink, berry, lilac, mauve or red with blue undertones.
Hair:
If you’re planning to change your hairstyle or color, experiment several months before the wedding so you have time to correct any mistakes. WWW.315DJS.COM

Teeth:
A cosmetic dentist can often correct an imperfect smile with veneers. But if spending painful hours in the dentist’s chair getting your teeth ground down sounds like it would put a damper on all the joyful planning, here’s good news:

Lumineers (www.lumineers.com) are now used by thousands of dentists nationwide and can be applied in two short, pain-free appointments. Unlike other veneer procedures, Lumineers are so strong and thin that they don’t require removal of sensitive tooth structure. The procedure is quick, painless and even reversible.

Nails:
If you’re a nail-biter, get weekly manicures to keep your nails healthy. Plan your last manicure a couple of days before the big day. Choose a pretty pale pink or splurge on a French manicure, not just because it looks great, but because the chips won’t show as much and are easy to fix. You’ll have beautiful hands for the rehearsal dinner and any other festivities.

Happy 2016! Now that you’re done eating holiday cookies and wrapping gifts for what seemed like days, it’s time to move on to your next matter of business – planning your wedding. Whether your fiancé popped the question on New Years Eve or you’ve just been putting it off for a few months, it’s time to kick your planning into gear. This year is all about you and finding the perfect wedding ensembles for your perfect day. So take some time and really think about what you’re going to want to see in those wedding albums ten, twenty…. fifty years from now that won’t leave you cringing and thinking, “Why did I make my bridesmaids wear those awful dresses?”

comes to adding some personal style to a wedding outfit. Try to get a feel for what the groomsmen wear on an everyday basis and incorporate that into the look. Do they all love Chuck Taylors? Maybe they are super hipster and would rather have a cool fitted suit with some statement socks that match the bridesmaids’ dresses. When the guys don’t have to be stuck in itchy tuxes, their personalities can shine through.

The Groom
We focus so much on the wedding dress that sometimes it’s easy to forget that guys want to look and feel good too. Once you decide on the theme of the wedding – is it black tie or something more casual? – then you can decide how dressy the groom will get. He may want to look suave and classic and wear some spats and tails, or maybe he’s all about fun and wants to stand out in a paisley jacket and colorful tie. As long as both partners are happy, there’s no harm in thinking outside the box.
The Bride
You’ve been thinking about this dress since the day you knew what a wedding was. But just because the original idea was a princess dress with tons of frills doesn’t mean it has to be that way on the big day. A wedding dress should be something that reflects your style, but is also timeless. If you don’t think you’ll love a white beaded two-piece crop top outfit in a few decades, don’t go for it. Wear what feels right and what makes you want to dance all night long. Other people’s opinions or what’s popular in the magazines can lead you astray from time to time, so tune all other influences out for now and focus on what will be the cherry on top of the best day of your life.

As a bride, a logical place to start your planning process is with your venue. Every bride hopes the memory of their wedding will live on long past the last dance. And your venue plays a key role in creating that experience for you and your guests.
Before you dive into your venue decision, think about your style.
You don’t have to have every detail figured out, just the top elements that are most important to you. Are you all about the ambience? Location or convenience? Music? Food? Once you have a handful of priorities, you can narrow in on your venue choices. The biggest item to keep into consideration as you hunt for your event’s home, is that your venue should enhance your event and uphold your wedding vision. Each venue will uphold your vision differently, but one is bound to be the best. The intricate pros and cons of venue selection can be overwhelming. So, let’s start with some stressfree pointers. Let your site visit be about logistics: can you fit your guest list into the ballroom? Then, infuse that seemingly cold, and tired space with your vision. Here’s some help!

6 Tips for Planning Your Wedding Photos With everything that goes into your wedding day, those once-in-a-lifetime moments will go by in a blur, which is why hiring a professional wedding photographer is a must. After all, the last thing you should be worrying about is whether your photographer will be able to capture your big day. The key? Prepare yourself so that you can accurately evaluate the “right” photographer for you. “The best photographer will take the time to build a rapport with you and use his or her experience and creativity to capture the mood, personality, ambiance and even the geography of your wedding,” says PPA (Professional Photographers of America) photographer Berit Bizjak. “The finest wedding photography is more than a series of still pictures. It’s physical poetry -- it tells the story of the day and portrays the essence of both people and place.” To this end, PPA, the largest international nonprofit association created by professional photographers, has taken the guesswork out of the process by offering six tips to help you plan your wedding photos like a pro:
Book far in advance.
The best photographers get booked quickly -sometimes as much as a year in advance -- so don’t wait until the last minute to book your photographer.

Show them the money.
Now is not the time to skimp on your photo budget. Call around and get a price range for services, and remember: after the cake is long gone, and the dress is stored away, your wedding photos will be the only things left to share and enjoy for years to come, so don’t cut too many corners on your photography budget -- you’ll end up regretting it.
The best photographer will take the time to build a rapport with you and use his or her experience and creativity to capture the mood, personality and ambiance of your wedding.
Make sure your photographer is a real pro.
Only hire someone who has liability insurance, experience taking the style of photos you want, backup equipment and a plan for when things go south. Ideally, he or she is a PPA photographer. PPA photographers do more than just snap pictures. They have the technical expertise and artistry to make you look your best and bring your vision to life. They also abide by a strict code of ethics that makes a real difference. Watch this (video) to see At Your Service real married couples share Since 1994! their stories. 4. PPA wedding photographers can also help you create that shot list, as they know what key moments tell a wedding story and can prepare for those. But talk about your must-haves, and walk through the entire program with your photographer ahead of time. Share your expectations ahead of time to ensure that he or she captures the key shots, while remaining attentive and available to catch the best candid moments.

Photographers can also help you create that shot list, as they know what key moments tell a wedding story and can prepare for those.
Almost as soon as the festivities are over, you’ll be eager to look at the photos so you can relive your big day over and over again. Ask your photographer for teasers or a “sneak peek” and a timeline for when the rest of the pictures will be available. Will they give you an online gallery for family and friends to choose the images they want? Again, knowing these things ahead of time will make things easy on the back end, sparing you any heartache.

Pay As You Go continued from pg 20 -- Internet access delivered over a cellulardata network. The pros and cons here are as might be expected -- the pro being a decent connection; the cons are that while some notebooks and netbooks come with a built-in 3G cellular modem (either standard or as an optional upgrade), these modems are usually tied to a particular carrier’s 3G service. And in most cases, using the 3G connection requires signing a one- or two-year contract and agreeing to pay a monthly fee, usually $40 and up. Check with If it’s available in your area, you Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, etc., for might consider a 3G connection. the details and fees. Internet access can be delivered Another choice is to simply “pay over a cellulardata network. as you go,” or, back to the old days but without the kludgey modem. This consists of purchasing a little plug-in device, a cellular modem, and access to a carrier’s service, for which you will pay a daily rate - but only as you use it. Rates vary, as do the costs of the devices, but depending on how much you need to use the Internet, where you’re planning to travel, and whether it’s convenient for you to be locked into home-based broadband, it can be an option worth exploring. Most of the major carriers offer devices, as do third parties - though you’ll still have to pay someone for the usage. Tip of the hat to: Johnny S for another great subject idea!

Preventive Medicine by DR. BARRY
What Did I Come In Here After? It’s the beginning of the new year and the beginning of a new era in medicine as well. Listen I would love to spend the column remonstrating about your holiday excesses (and you know you are ) and urging you to not just start the year out with good intentions but to start each DAY with good intentions. You do know you don’t have to wait for a major change in the calendar to start work on the most important home improvement project...your health. OK, let’s consider that sermon preached and move onto something new and very exciting at least for me. There is, finally, a FDA certified, reliable, reproducible test to evaluate your memory and cognition. With the Silver Tsunami of elders we’re all starting to wonder about their memory. Is your mom just getting older or is it the beginning of something serious? Is your wife just not paying attention anymore or is it her poor hearing that seems to have her repeating herself? Do you remember the name of that lady who you ran into in the dairy section by the time you have been through frozen foods? How do you separate the mild forgetfulness of aging from real dementia in its early stages? Finally we have a way. So far we have used serial observations and some crude questions like “remember 3 words” and, “spell WORLD backwards” etc. The results could vary based on your attention, your concentration, etc. They provided only a crude measure of your memory. As a geriatric specialist I can’t tell you how many clocks I have had patients draw! These tests can be helpful but are woefully imprecise and fluctuate from visit to visit. We diagnose and treat hypertension based on numbers...blood pressure numbers. We diagnose and treat diabetes based on numbers...sugar numbers. So to for cholesterol. Finally we have a way to quantify memory issues. We, at long last, have the fifth vital sign! (the first four being respirations, temperature, blood pressure, and pulse). Dr Charles J. Duffy MD PhD is a physician, researcher, professor and inventor, and after years of research he developed the only FDA approved device for testing memory. It uses a computer and joystick with his own patented (19 patents pending) software program to evaluate your memory and thinking patterns. When I heard continued on pg g 40

What Did I Come In Here After? continued from pg 36 about this machine I said, “we have got to get this for our patients.” We can test people who think they might have a memory problem. We can test patients before and after memory meds to see if they really made a difference. We can test people before and after starting statins (the super popular cholesterol med very widely prescribed in America which have been linked to memory loss as well as increased diabetes risk). We can test people before and after chemotherapy to assess for Chemo Brain Fog. The biggest potential use is to help differentiate people who have just a little memory loss associated with normal aging versus people who go on to have real trouble with dementia. We can use this test to tell patients if they should still drive based on their mental and physical response to the test. We test every patient at their annual evaluation for their blood pressure, their weight, and even their hearing. We do crude testing of every Medicare patient’s memory but this offers us a far more reproducible and reliable meaWe do crude testing of every Medicare patient’s memory surement, that we can do over time, to tell who is slipping but this test offers us a far more reproducible and reliand how much. Should Momma still be driving? Should Momma still be living alone? Now I can take a test result and show a patient something concrete that shows them where normal is and where they are. Powerful stuff... Now, I still don’t think we have very good medications for memory loss but this test will allow us to measure any actual improvement. We can finally tell whether or not they help any one individual patient. Don’t bother asking your doctor about this test because he is too busy. I assume that your doctor got the same letter that I did introducing this device but with my Concierge program I have time to really look at these things, especially important things like memory, nutrition, exercise etc. that can have a meaningful and important impact on the lives of my patients. I have always been an early adopter if I felt it would make a difference to the lives of my patients somehow. This test is reliable and reproducible and covered by insurance and frankly, in the scale of things, pretty cheap compared to the information it can give you. It’s less than $50 dollars to run the roughly 10 minute test which is covered by most insurance. If you are a member of my Signature MD concierge practice we will be discussing this test sometime this year. If you are a patient of Preventive Medicine Associates and you have any concerns about your memory just ask your provider and we can easily arrange this test. I believe this machine and eventually others like it will become the standard of care in assessing and monitoring your cognitive status. It’s long overdue. The Write Stuff by NANCY ROBERTS
Thomas E. Woods, Jr.
33 Questions About American History You’re Not Supposed to Ask What better way to start the New Year than with an Old Book about really Old Stuff that’s Politically Incorrect? OK. Let’s start with the writer. He specializes in politically incorrect books - but, his C.V. reads much like another famous person’s, though not necessarily in the same order: B.A. Harvard, M.Phil. and PhD., Columbia. Oh, and he’s a libertarian, small l. Other than that, I can’t attest to his scholarship. The book is a publication of sub-title of Random House, so, again, reasonable though not guaranteed scholarship. And, full disclosure (I love that expression): I did not go through and check each item against other publications on the topic but merely read for amusement, entertainment, and inquiry. Now, to continue that disclosure: I was not educated, in the formal sense, in the last 20 years. And I do think that makes a difference. A FB Friend mentioned that his dad had a habit of reciting a long and rhythmic poem, and that put me in mind of a man I knew who did the same. I realized they’d probably both been educated at

around the same time, when recitation was still done in some schools - kids were expected to learn a poem or reading “by heart” (what a wonderful way to put it!) and then stand and recite it in front of their appreciative elders, as kids today will... oh, never mind. My point being, I grew up with a certain set of stories about American History - you know, like “In fourteenhundred and ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue,” as opposed to “Columbus was an Oppressor from Europe who sailed to the New World bent upon the destruction of the Indigenous Peoples who had never done anybody any harm and were living in Eden.” OK, perhaps that’s over-stating the dichotomy, but you get the picture. What kids are taught in school has a lot to do with what is popular culturally - history be What better way to start the New damned. And neither story is necesYear than with an Old Book about sarily “correct.” really Old Stuff that’s Politically Every day, we re-interpret history; Incorrect? sometimes this is based upon new things that turn up (Kinnewick Man, for example), or upon a new way of “reading” things right before our eyes (is the Confederate Flag the secret sign of slavery, or a symbol of a rebellion, or both - depending upon who you are?).

The entire Rayepisode, you will have already drawn some conclusions as to where you believe the plot is going, and who the antagonist is going to be. Then, the last 60 seconds unfold, and you suddenly realize that this tale is going to be far different than what you expected. A voice-over by John in these closing moments summarizes the ever-evolving plot succinctly; “We’re not bad people, but we did a bad thing.” BLOODLINE succeeds on every conceivable level, and easily emerges as one of the best new shows of 2015. The Rayburn saga is told in a variety of time-bending ways, effectively toying with its with expert precision. As John’s voice-over in the pilot illustrated, the entire season is an exploration into a series of dark and unfathomable events that have already happened. He vows to tell the whole truth, even if it paints his family in a negative light. We learn that every character has secrets of their own, and as the saga unfolds, these indiscretions are dragged out into the harsh Florida sunlight. Each member of the cast is spectacular, and as the season progresses, this sentiment is proven time and again. As a fan of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, I thought it would be impossible to see Chandler as anyone other than Coach Taylor. By the time the first season of BLOODLINE reached its conclusion, I felt like he was John Rayburn. As a detective who finds that the steady grip he has on his own life slipping slowly through his fingers day by day, he desperately attempts to stand as the voice of reason in the muddied waters of the Rayburn’s lives. On the flip side, Mendelsohn is a marvel as the dysfunctional Danny. 33 Questions About American History continued from pg 41 What fascinates me is the information that you either must dig for, or that appears based upon some scholar digging into original (source) material (a friend spent his graduate days in dusty volumes of Early Spanish, learning what people like Columbus were writing about their adventures at that time) and trying to make sense of it in the context of all the other material that has surfaced. Then, there are writers, like Woods, who try to popularize this information - that is, make it “available” to both the intellect and the education of the average person. And do so, I believe, honestly. For I do get the impression that Woods, while, as a libertarian-small-l, he may have a smallish axe to grind, he is intellectually honest. He seems to bat both ways, though, depending upon whose darling is being killed, he will seem to be on “the other side.” I have a friend with whom I fight the Civil War, endlessly. I have to admit to having lost as many battles as I have won, but what’s of great interest to me is that perhaps the people who were living in those times were as certainly-uncertain of why they were going to war as we who try to figure it all out are today. Woods deals with that in the question of Virginia’s State Constitution and Jefferson’s idea of “state’s rights,” and whether this was, or was not, a defining issue of the Civil War. (See Chapter 19, and how and when and under what conditions Virginia agreed to ratify the U.S. Constitution.) For each point of debate, you can read “The Myth” (the popular idea of the subject) and “The Truth” (or his reformation on the subject). As I said, it’s important to read each subject with the necessary grain of salt - and do some research of your own. If he’d perhaps divided his chapters into “The Common Story,” and “The Uncommon Story,” I would have felt less nervous about accepting the stories with which I agree with him, and dismissing the stories with which I disagree. What’s fun is, the book will make you think. And the fact that it was published a few years ago (and I’m just getting around to it, which tells you a bit about my pile of reading!), because so much of the history is relatively old (heck, even Bill Clinton, whose presidency is one of the issues, is 20-odd years ago), the issues he raises, as they have not been settled yet, are unlikely to have been settled by the time you get to reading this book. For your consideration, some of the topics: • Did Martin Luther King Oppose Affirmative Action? • Were The American Indians Environmentalists? • Was the “Wild West” Really So Wild? • How Does Social Security Really Work? • What Really Happened in the Whiskey Rebellion? And on it goes. For your reading, and arguing, pleasure!
