George P. Newton had seen pedal steel players in traditional country bands and I loved the sound of the instrument, but really liked the rock and folk of the 60’s. He decided to pursue pedal steel after hearing Rusy Young play with the band Paco.

and I loved the sound of the instrument, but I really liked the rock and folk of the 60’s. I was not a real fan of traditional country music. Then a Poco album came out with Rusty Young playing a pedal steel guitar to the new California Country music. He had a great sound. He played through a Leslie speaker at times. He made me realize how much more musical real estate had yet to be covered with this instrument. So I thought, why not try to play the steel. I can be experimental and I won’t have to worry so much about catching up with everyone.

Alien: Covenant With the 2012 release of PROMETHEUS, director Ridley Scott stepped back into the driver’s seat of his legendary “Alienverse.” According to Scott, the film wasn’t meant to be a direct prequel to the original ALIEN. Instead, it was an origins story that began to lay the foundation of what was to come. The reaction to the film was mixed from audience members and critics alike. For the most part, at least in my opinion, it was much more “hit” than “miss,” and I was blown away by Scott’s lofty scope and vision. Set more than 10 years after the events of PROMETHEUS, ALIEN: COVENANT provides far

more thrills and chills than its predecessor. The Xenomorphs, which were virtually non-existent in the previous installment, plays a major role in COVENANT, and displays a shocking savagery that will certainly make its audience jump and squirm. The year is 2104 and the Covenant is a space craft on its way to a distant planet of Origea-6. With 2000 colonists, 1000 embryos, and 15 crew members (including an android name Walter,) it is a journey that will establish a settlement well beyond the confines of Earth. some funny war stories. GPN: As political correctness is now in vogue, I’ll try to think of some appropriate ones. CS: heh heh heh … GPN: Cumberland Stage was the first band for me as well as for my pal Skip Murphy. We were all pretty basic musicians and we used only acoustic guitars. No drums. But had some great harmonies. We got the chance to open the show for Melissa Manchester at the old Brookside in East Syracuse and were about half way through our set when the audience became restless. CS: Who do you listen to for inspiration? GPN: It’s funny. I don’t listen to other steel players for inspiration, although you can’t help but be inspired by the likes of Rusty Young, Buddy Emmons, Robert Randolph, Paul Franklin, et. al. I am inspired by great singer/songwriters who inspire me to help them get their message across. CS: God bless you and everything you stand for. GPN: There are lots of great singers coming onto the scene all the time. My model is David Lindley whose musical contributions are an integral element of Jackson Browne’s sound. CS: Wow. Yeah, Lindley. Huge inspiration on me, too. I just saw him this past January in California. He certainly takes the idea of slide/steel way beyond any boundaries. So … with whom are you playing music, currently? GPN: I play regularly with The Big D Orchestra, Better Than Bowling, The Merry Pranksters and The Joedogs. I occasionally play with lots of folks including Cross Creek, The Dust Devil Band, Jane Zell, Leo Crandall, Colin Aberdeen and Mike Powell. My wife Sharon Allen, incidentally, sings with Better Than Bowling, The Big D Orchestra and The Merry Pranksters as well. CS: Tell us about favorite highlights in your music career. GPN: I really haven’t had a lot of highlights as I spent 30 years in a fulltime job and most of my playing fell before and after that. I’m just a part time local musician. I did have the chance to open for some great acts including Muddy Waters and Peter Tosh. A couple of years ago, The Big D Orchestra was playing the Dinosaur Barbeque and Billy Joel was playing the Dome the following night. Musical director and sax player, Mark Rivera was there. He asked to sit in for a couple of songs and ended up playing the entire 1 hour set with us. The real highlights for me have come when I have been part of a thrown together group and something unexpected and magical has happened. CS: Ha!. That last sentence … best answer, ever. It is, in every conceivable way, the type of blockbuster that demands to be seen in the IMAX format. This isn’t merely due to its stunning special effects and incredible set pieces, but, perhaps more than any film in recent memory, the immersive audio enhances the experience beyond any reasonable expectation. It is, in a way, a character in itself. There is no better example of this than the unsettling clicks and chittering from the Xenomorphs. These sounds, in this particular format, will make your skin crawl and your heart jump. The Xenomorph may be the reason that many audience members buy a ticket, but the true star of COVENANT is Michael Fassbender. The actor, who continues to prove that he is one of the best performers working in Hollywood today, gives a dual performance that almost overshadows the Alien itself. Forge and up the Fulton chain of lakes and back. The deal was, the first so many hundred people (whatever the boat would hold) to be in line could take the cruise with free beer all day with Old No. 7 playing on top deck. In the middle of the deck was a cattle trough about 20 feet long full of ice and beer. We headed up the chain, playing and drinking and then turned around and headed back toward Old Forge to arrive just as the fireworks over the bay started. As we approached the town, we had accumulated a huge flotilla of boats all around us, following us in, honking their horns. At some point, the well lubricated crowd on board realized that if they all ran to the railing on one side and then back to the other, they could get this huge boat rocking substantially in a very slow roll. I guess you had to be there, but it was pretty wild when the rocking boat with the band playing, the flotilla and the fireworks all came together. Another at Ontario Orchard interesting gig was opening for Peter Tosh, the Jamaican Reggae star. With the large open space, the bar was placed in the center of the room and was shaped like a large oval so that patrons could be served all the way around. The band manager then stepped to the mic and began shouting “Peter Tosh—he’s the Mystic Man,” and whipped the audience into a frenzy. After a few minutes, Peter came out and stepped onto the stage and delivered a truly religious performance. CS: Great stories, man. I love the stories. Thank you for sharing. GPN: I have always used the steel guitar to play cover songs that did not have steel in the original composition, so I have developed a homemade style. In fact, when I bought my first steel guitar around 1971, I had to order it without even trying it because no music store in the area carried them. When I ordered it, I also ordered a Mel Bay book of pedal steel guitar chords and I bought the new Derek and the Dominoes Layla album. When everything came in, the first thing I did was learn to play the chords to those songs and try to find a pocket to work in. That is still how I work. Also, I’m lazy when it comes to learning other people’s stuff. Or maybe it’s that I lose interest before I am able to capture it as I’m not as dexterous as the great players and I get frustrated easily. But, it is when I just make sounds that I am in love with the instrument and I am in my element. I would be a better musician if I learned all of that great stuff that all of those great players have created and figured out. But, I really don’t have much interest in recreating what others have done. I love doing great songs, but I never want to do them the way the original artist did. Somebody already did that and probably had a blast coming up with it! So I just take the chords, listen to the lyrics and add what I hope supports the music and the message. CS: Ummm. George. We need to collaborate, if even only for a tune. I share this exact sentiment, artistically. GPN: Absolutely. CS: Cool. Let’s finish this article, first. What do you have to say to the budding musician? GPN: Hard to say because there are so many different ways to approach music. Some folks love to recreate songs exactly like the original artist and people love listening to it. If that’s your desire, follow it. But if, like me, you are a tinkerer and an experimenter, remember—you have in your hands a device (or a voice) that makes sounds and there is no right or wrong way to make them. Don’t get me wrong. Learning fundamentals is important. But, let the instrument take you wherever it wants to go. Lastly, choose the pedal steel guitar. There are only a few players around so you will always be one of the best! And, it has so many places yet to go. CS: What are your thoughts on the CNY music scene, itself? GPN: I traveled a lot during my “day job” career and always sought out the local music scene. Syracuse and Central New York has a music PARTIES • CATERING • GIFT CARDS scene that is bigger and better than you will find in most cities that are much larger. This is wonderful. The only downsides are that the players outnumber the venues, so the venues don’t need to pay much and don’t feel the need to charge at the door. Preventive Medicine by DR. BARRY

Fighting Fibromyalgia Last month I wrote about the manifest benefits of exercise. Right after I wrote the article there was yet another paper in the medical journals that further supported the evidence that regular exercise decreases cancer risk as well. Imagine that … a treatment that doesn’t involve tremendous expense, a treatment that doesn’t require special medicines … a treatment that doesn’t require a doctor’s supervision. We have no pill that lowers dementia risk, lowers cardiovascular risk and lowers risk of cancer all at the same time. Plus, you will actually feel better!!! This month I want to focus again on something really new, at least for Syracuse. There is a new treatment for Fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia as defined by the Mayo Clinic is “a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues.” We still don’t have a good handle on what causes fibromyalgia. Some doctors think it’s all

just depression. Some doctors believe it is an infectious disease and we just haven’t found the causative organism yet. So far the treatments for fibromyalgia involve pain meds, antidepressants and seizure meds like lyrica and neurontin used for their pain relieving properties. Of course we advise all patients to try exercise but it’s tough to get people in pain at rest to really exert themselves. Genetics may play some role but it’s not a certainty. Women are affected more than men but we don’t really have a handle on why. Other than prescription meds we have advocated meditation, tai chi, yoga, massage and acupuncture all of which have shown some improvement in symptoms over MIDDLE-EASTERN & GREEK time. The prescription drugs don’t fix or cure anything they just help deal with the symptoms. Each patient after being evaluated is given a dose of the solution (it’s a liquid preparation) and can judge for themselves if it’s working. The visit and the trial of the medication is FREE. That’s right I used the F word. in us versus them. In many places and times, females have always been “them.” In primitive societies, adults initiated girls and boys into the tribe differently, separating them at puberty. Boys joined men in the hunt. Girls were sexually shamed, sometimes through clitorectomy, a mutilation still committed in Africa and sometimes Islam, to eliminate female sexual desire and prove virtue. Anthropology and modern pop psychology suggest that men generally form alliances through activities while girls bond through communication. While these stereotypes and tendencies are changing, young men and women are tested and test each other in brutal, primitive ways. In an interview with CBS, parents of Penn State fraternity hazing victim Tim Piazza characterized their son’s death as murder. Jim Piazza told CBS, “This wasn’t boys being boys. This was murder of our son. They tortured him for 12 hours. They let him suffer for 12 hours. He died a slow and painful death at the hands of these ‘men of principal (sic),’ as they call it.” What is meant by “boys will be boys?” The popular 1970’s song, “In the Summertime,” plays like a hunting party chant. Mungo Jerry instructs male listeners to “Have a drink, have a drive. Go out and see what you can find. If her daddy’s rich, take her out for a meal. If her daddy’s poor, just do what you feel.” There are hunting parties and there are hunting parties. People dealt physical injuries in rituals, wars, genderbased violence and other culturally- rooted organized traumas often suffer post-traumatic stress. Too often, non-victims blame victims. Alabama Representative Mo Brooks, co-sponsor of the American Health Care Act told CNN that AHCA “helps offset all these costs, thereby reducing the cost to those people who lead good lives, they’re healthy, they’ve done the things to keep their bodies healthy. And right now, those are the peo-

ple—who’ve done things the right way—that are seeing their costs skyrocketing.” Do we always know what we’re buying into? Leading up to his twelve-hour ordeal or, in the early moments of that ordeal, was Tim Piazza ever informed enough and able, and later, conscious enough and able to say, “no” or “stop” to what his new friends were doing to him? Girls and women are often asked and forced to answer these questions. Cultures, groups, and nations should consider these questions. Good/bad and us/them thinking usually ends up hurting someone. It is good to remain conscious of that fact. Consciousness is good.

For my house, I probably shouldn’t need the three that typically come with the basic system, but given my additional challenges with the walls, I did have to do a little fiddling to get it set up so that each device communicated properly. Believe it or not, my access point for my modem is “outside” the house (technically, on an enclosed “sunroom,” but there is an exterior wall between it and the rest of the house. So the second eero had to go somewhere visible (no walls) to the first (the one connected to the modem). But once that hurdle was leapt, the rest was easy. Thus far, it has handled every challenge thrown at it by multiple computers, phones, tablets, a Kindle Firestick and an Apple TV – usually with at least three or four of them operating at the same time. There are competitive products on the market, and eero isn’t cheap (about $400 for the three unit system), but if you’re a family that requires a lot of WiFi horsepower, this may just be what you’re looking for!

We decided that the sun was still up so we enjoyed our appetizers on the patio! To get the full effect of Uriah’s awesome menu we decided to let the chef pick our meal so we could report to you on a lot of what they had to offer! We began our meal with a sampling of appetizers. We both loved sitting outside and enjoying their freshly steamed and perfectly seasoned little neck clams! We also sampled the Soft Pretzel Sticks which were a salty buttery masterpiece served with perfectly spicy jalapeno popper cheese dip! We also got to try the Baked Hot Cherry Peppers, a culinary delight with a perfect mix of spice and cheese, these stuffed with house made sausage dressing topped with marinara and mozzaWe began our meal with a sampling of rella la then baked to appetizers. We also tried the Chicken Wings, fresh chicken tenderloin served with blue cheese and celery in excellent sauces like mild, hot, extra hot, bourbon barbecue, garlic Parmesan, plain, honey mustard, or Asia. These are so far from the freezer burned monstrosities that pass at some restaurants, you could tell they were Uriah’s Vodka Parmesan; a fresh chicken actually made from breast breaded and fried to a golden chicken, not processed perfection, served with a vodka sauce, penne mystery meat! This salad is not for the faint of heart! My husband loved it so much he said that next time we visit he would be ordering the Uriah’s Salad as his entrée so he didn’t have to share! Tales from the Vine by CASSANDRA HARRINGTON

How to Plan a Rockin’ Wine Tour So you and your friends or family have decided to go on a wine tour, but … what do you do after that? Here’s a quick little guide to help you through the next steps!

Set the date!

There’s no bad time to go wine tasting, but fair warning, Saturdays in September and October are the busiest days of the year. You will get a more personalized experience if you go on a weekday or during the colder months. I, personally, love to visit during the winter months. I am always looking for something to do, and there are so few people out, that you will have a great time with no lines and could even end up being served by the owner or the winemaker at this time of year.

Determine your pick-up and drop-off spot.

Pick a spot where everyone can leave their cars and can relax and have a snack afterwards before venturing home. I always ask if anyone in my group would be willing to allow this. This way, the group can make sure everyone is safe to make the drive home.

There’s no bad time to go wine tasting, but fair warning, Saturdays in September and October are the busiest days of the year.

Determine your budget.

Transportation cost will vary depending on your group size and the duration of the reservation (in hours). Tasting fees along the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail vary from $4-10, depending on group size. Be sure to set some funds aside for wine and souvenir purchases! continued on pg 27

Business of Business of Interest

by JANET LA FRANCE

ICON Towers Three years ago, Graziano Zazzara and his son, Graziano Jr., bought the building at 344 Warren Street. It took over a year to finalize the design and get everything in order so construction could begin. The building was pretty much gutted to pave the way for 89 apartments, 2 floors of commercial offices, and one spectacular restaurant! Grazi gave me the grand tour, and grand it was. The apartments have one or two bedrooms with 750 to 1500 square feet. Each floor has a storage area so that tenants don’t have to try and store everything in the apartment. “I don’t want our tenants to waste valuable closet space on things like seasonal decorations, bikes or anything else that needs a bit more storage,” stated Grazi. “We tried to think of all the amenities anyone would need in order to make the apartment their home.” Believe me when I say … THEY THOUGHT OF EVERYTHING! There is a fully equipped gym for residents, and another gym just for the commercial tenants. There’s a community room for parties or gatherings free of charge. All you need to do is schedule the time. Also, those residents with only one bedroom who have out of town guests, there is a guest room with a bathroom. “If you have a one bedroom apartment, we don’t want you to put your guest on an air mattress. This way, the residents have their guests in the building rather than sending them to a hotel,” explained Grazi. And if you have pets … well there’s a dedicated area to bathe your dogs/pets. It’s a great room with a sink that can handle your dog of any size, “and the residents love it,” Grazi said. “One lady began to cry when she saw the facility.” But the amenities don’t stop there. He then took me to the lower roof where they are building a large deck that will have barbecues, tables and chairs. The perfect facility for summer living in the city. On the other side of that terrace area will be a roof top garden! “There’s a lot of people who miss having their fresh tomatoes, zucchinis or flowers to work on in their leisure time.” Grazi stated, “Like I said, I want this place to feel like their home, not a generic apartment building.” I was truly impressed by the size of the apartments. Each has a window view with granite window sills. The tall ceilings show off the spacious accommodations that are staged beautifully. There is also a washer and dryer in each unit, and the kitchen features stainless steel appliances and granite counter tops. There is abundant counter space with a peninsula for either food prep or a breakfast bar. Even the one bedroom apartment I saw had a walk-in closet in the bedroom with plenty of space for a queen-sized bed. The grayish hardwood floors complete the elegant look of every room. They began renting apartments a little over four months ago and have filled 85 of the 89 units. There is only one commercial space available to lease now. “I thought it would take over a year to fill even 80% of the building, but we’re almost at full capacity” claims Grazi. -“It’s a blessing I never expected and I think it’s a testament to the quality we tried to put into the building.” Grazi and his son worked diligently to make their dreams come true and it shows in the quality in both the apartments and commercial spaces. “To complete the building, I wanted to put in a restaurant that was both beautiful and relaxed. I also wanted the best Italian food around,” said Grazi. His partner in the restaurant is also the head chef, Fabio, which is also the name of the restaurant. Fabio is directly from Italy, but was unavailable for today’s interview. However, once open, I plan to have a delightful meal and have a chance to speak with Fabio, but that will have to be a follow in my next article.

Graziano Zazzara and his son, Graziano Jr., bought the building at 344 Warren Street. The redesigned building will house 89 apartments, 2 floors of commercial offices, and one spectacular restaurant!

Grazi is no stranger to the restaurant industry. His Dad and Mom started The Villa restaurant over on Burnet Avenue in 1955. However, the family closed in 1967 so his parents could retire. While designing The Villa, his Dad had a “S” shaped bar built and then commissioned artist, Victor Kosa, to paint a replica of Dante’s Inferno. The painting is a stunning replica especially since it’s 20 feet long and about 7 feet tall. One of the former employees is well respected attorney, John Rinaldi. He was a server at The Villa in order to put himself through law school. Why is this important? Well, Grazi hadn’t seen John for about 25 years and finally bumped into John at the DMV one day. Grazi’s Dad passed away in 1998 continued on pg 24

so the painting was important to him, but he didn’t know where it was. He happened to tell John about wanting to find the painting, and much to Grazi’s surprise, he found the John had bought the painting from his uncle when the building was sold. John loved the painting and told Grazi he would leave it for him in his will, but then called after a few weeks and told Grazi to “come and get it. It’s sitting in the attic and I know it’s more important to you.” Until now, the painting was in Grazi’s home for 18 years. “I had to fold It’s not only the artwork that it half to make it fit in my house,” makes this place so beautisaid Grazi, “it wrapped around into ful. There is beautiful ironwork another room, but at least I had throughout the restaurant. it.” Now this phenomenal painting is displayed in the dining room at Fabio’s. Grazi believes his Dad was watching out for him, “that wall was already here yet the painting looks as if it were made for that space.” And it’s true, I thought he had it made for that wall, but it was more like divine intervention. Two other pieces of art were found on top of the walk-in cooler when the old restaurant was being deconstructed. These depict the canal in Venice, and again, the pieces look custom made since the colors match the décor perfectly. Another feature is a large aquarium that Fabio brought with him. His pet Paco is a Paco fish who is now 15 years old. This big fish is quite the conver-

sation piece, but will certainly entertain everyone in the family. And that’s the objective. Both Fabio and the Zazzaras want a beautiful upscale facility, but they want everyone to feel at home. “I want to feed everyone – kids and adults whether they’re wearing ties and suits or shorts and t-shirts. It’s fine dining with a relaxed environment,” said Grazi. And to prove his point, there are no child menus. Instead, children are given an old-fashioned view master with the kid’s menu inside. I laughed because it’s something I haven’t seen since I was a kid, but what a wonderful way to marry high style with family values. The environment is not only relaxed, there are padded chairs to help you rest and relax. It’s not only the artwork that makes this place so beautiful. There are four sconces on the wall, “I bought those for $50 each and had no idea what I would do with them, but once I walked in here, I knew they belonged here.” Grazi Jr. was an integral part of the design. “The chandeliers were custom made to match the sconces, but then we decided that we should incorporate the iron work throughout the restaurant,” said Grazi Jr. One of the iron features is a cart they use to flambé their custom pasta appetizMon-Thurs $ 95 ers. Ugly Truths, Simple Solutions Beauty comes at a high cost. Unbeknownst to many, clothing and makeup industries have an ugly side, often putting the well being of the customers, workers, and environment as secondary to the bottom line. That’s why this month we’re breaking down some of the ways to become more healthy and beautiful from the inside out.

Start Skin Care at the Source

Often when we encounter a stint of bad acne, we reach for extra foundation rather than addressing the root of the problem. The first step to glowing skin isn’t applying extra products or buying expensive toners; it simply begins with a healthy diet. In her book, Eat Pretty, Jolene Hart gives simple tips and recipes for how to eat your way to a clear complexion. Here are some ways to get started: 1. Up your blueberry intake – Antioxidants promote collagen, a protein found throughout your body in your skin and hair. By stocking up on bright fruits and vegetables, you can reduce skin damage and wrinkles.

This summer, don’t just look your best, but feel your best inside and out. Look for ways to become more healthy and beautiful from the inside out.

2. Stop the soda and the sweets – As much as you can, lower your unnatural sugar intake. These foods cause breakouts and/or dryness in your skin. 3. Kick it with vitamin K – Foods like asparagus, basil, beets, broccoli, cucumber, and kale all help strengthen your blood vessels to prevent dark circles. 4. Avocados: the new anti-aging cream – Your skin thrives when you eat vitamin E. Almonds, olives, papayas, avocados, peaches, sunflower seeds, and tomatoes are just a handful of options that can help moisturize your skin and prevent the effects of aging. 5. Keep the coffee to a minimum – Coffee increases cortisol (the stress hormone), which is known to contribute to acne, belly fat, and wrinkles, so don’t rely on too many cups a day.

Clothe Yourself, Care for Others

As fashion has become less concerned with quality and more concerned with quantity, clothes are being made faster than ever. This pace requires increasing amounts of harmful pesticides to be used on cotton crops; these pesticides have been known to cause cancers, mental illnesses, and physical deformities. In addition, lower prices result in lower compensation for textile workers. While people used to have a wardrobe of a few quality items to mix-and-match, we now tend to buy lots more clothes that last less time, resulting in more waste. In the face of a lot of

How to Plan a Rockin’ Wine Tour continued from pg 21

Hire or designate a driver!

Once you have an idea of how many people you’re traveling with, contact transportation companies (there’s a list of recommended businesses at CayugaWineTrail.com/Along-Trail) for rates. The sooner you call, the more likely you are to find the right size vehicle on your preferred date for a good price. Picking a transportation company located nearest your pick-up location may save on cost.

Set your path.

For groups of 10+, reservations must be made by contacting each individual winery. Plan an hour or so in between each stop to allow time to taste, shop, selfies, potty breaks and travel time. I typically visit winery websites and Facebook pages in advance to pick which I’d like to visit.

Think food!

Nobody wants to travel with HUNGRY friends. Many of the wineries do carry snack items, but there are restaurants along the Trail. Americana Vineyards, Toro Run Winery, Knapp Winery, Thirsty Owl Wine Co. and Cayuga Ridge Estate Winery all have restaurants on site. To expedite your time, make a reservation for your lunch, as well. Check the Mobile App for seasonal hours!

Exercise & Fitness by JENNIFER NASTASI GUZELAK

Exercise Can Help Kids Do Better In School Attention parents: If you’d like to see your kids do better in school, have them close their books, set down their pencils and go outside to play. And so it goes. Students in every grade level at schools across the country are struggling in class. It’s not because they’re underachievers or they’re not smart. It’s not even because they don’t care. It’s because they aren’t getting enough physical activity! Study after study proves that students need adequate amounts of physical activity throughout the school day. So what do I feel is the missing link between reducing obesity and increasing America’s ability to compete in a tough global economy? Physical education, physical activity and just plain old exercise of any kind in our children’s day. Not surprisingly, exercise whether it comes in the form of a karate lesson, soccer tournament, family hike or bike ride will help them perform better academically. Equally important, it will also help prevent obesity and other health related disorders like diabetes and heart disease. According to research, physical activOpen Tuesday – saTurday ity before, during and after school promotes scholastic performance in children and youth. Not Your Average Antique Store! dents to learn more. It’s an incorrect belief, and there’s scientific evidence to prove it. Here’s how exercise may affect your child’s ability to function in the classroom: • Increased oxygen flow to the brain • Increased brain neurotransmitters • Increased brain-derived neurotrophins that support neuronal differentiation and survival in the developing brain. Neurotrophins assure the survival of neurons in areas responsible for learning, memory and higher thinking. Physical activity has benefits beyond improved grades. Getting outside and being active can also be directly linked to absenteeism, drop-out rates and social connectedness. According to research, drop-out rates were lower for youth who consistently participated in interscholastic sports. So what can school districts do to incorporate more activity and movement into the school day? First, administrators must let go of the dated idea that physical education must take a backseat. There is currently no evidence indicating that this strategy is, in fact, effective in increasing standardized test scores. In fact, a growing body of evidence shows that increased time for physical education and other school-based physical activity programs is associated with a positive impact on academic outcomes. An adequate physical education curriculum can help children achieve these numbers, in turn creating healthy bodies and eager-to-learn minds. Adequate opportunity for physical activity doesn’t stop there; it also sets children up for a healthy adulthood, perpetuating a cycle of well-being for generations to come.

Exercise will improve children’s behavior, help them make friends, and allow them to feel more confident around their peers as well as coaches and other adults.

This is a very consistent finding that physically fit kids do better in school. A recent report from the Institute of Medicine asserts that children who are more active show greater attention, have faster cognitive processing speed, and perform better on standardized academic tests than children who are less active. A strong body of research supports the link between physical fitness and test scores. In one study, for example, nearly 2,000 California schoolchildren who were outside a “healthy fitness zone” (a 12-year-old who

took longer than 12 minutes to run a mile would be outside that zone) scored lower on state standardized tests than those who were more fit. The more important question is: Does adding opportunities for physical activity during the school day boosts kids’ capacity to learn? The research and evidence is beginning to suggest that the answer is yes. One recent study conducted in Georgia invited 111 inactive, overweight kids, age 7 to 11, to participate in an after-school exercise program, during which they were active for at least 20 minutes. Another 60 kids, also overweight, were wait-listed and served as controls. After 13 weeks, the kids in the exercise program performed better than the controls on tests of mental tasks such as planning, organizing and strategizing, as well as on standardized math tests. In Kansas, an intervention designed to combat obesity also found a link between physical activity and learning. In the study, teachers at 14 elementary schools were trained to teach lessons using movement; for example, students might hop or run to letters on the floor to spell words or might solve 2+2=4 by moving their bodies rather than blocks. Ten other schools served as controls; their teachers received no training. The added activity had positive effects on body weight. In the schools where activity was added, 21.8 percent of children who were at risk for obesity moved into the normal range for body mass index (a measure of weight that takes height into account); in the control schools, 16.8 percent of at-risk kids moved to normal. To the researcher’s surprise, scores on a thirty minute standardized test of reading, writing and math were higher in the schools that used active lessons than in the schools that didn’t. The evidence is growing that physical activity is even more beneficial than previously thought.

In Conclusion

There is little dispute that physical activity is good for kids. It offers opportunities to socialize and learn new skills. It has a positive impact on cognitive skills, attitudes and academic behavior, all of which are important components of improved academic performance. It also helps prevent obesity and other health related disorders. The evidence is clear. Physical activity should have a place in the curriculum of every school that’s serious about teaching its kids. How this translates into children’s lives, where video games and other sedentary activities are a constant allure, is a challenge parents and schools must face together.

Twin Peaks When TWIN PEAKS premiered on ABC in 1990, it proved to be a show that was unlike anything that had ever been seen on network television. While the question of “Who Killed Laura Palmer?” never reached the same level of hysteria as “Who Shot JR?” the off-kilter series from David Lynch boasted plenty of intrigue and mystery. Introducing a bevy of memorable, endlessly bizarre characters and scenarios, it didn’t just toy with the idea of standard convention, it utterly obliterated it. Lead by Kyle MacLachlan as Agent Dale Cooper, the drama was set in the fictional Washington town of Twin Peaks. It was a place, and a crime that offered far

more questions than answers, and the townsfolk turned on one another as fear and paranoia began to set in. The initial eight episode run of TWIN PEAKS is widely considered as one of the greatest single season’s in the history of television, but beyond this, the reception was mixed. The identity of Laura’s killer was revealed halfway through the second season, and as the show became more surreal with each passing episode, interest waned. Lynch became less and less involved with the production, and his absence showed. Despite leaving viewers with an incredible cliffhanger in its final episode of the sophomore season, ABC dropped the series. Though the film TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME was released a short time later, it appeared that the story had run its course. continued on pg 36

Twin Peaks continued from pg 32

Looking back on it now, it’s apparent that TWIN PEAKS was the epitome of a show that would, in these modern times, be considered “binge worthy.” There were so many intricacies, plot lines, and characters, that it’s easy to understand why its popularity fell off. It was unafraid to delve into the realm of the bizarre, and this revolutionary approach simply proved to be too much for the casual fan to bear. There are those, many of my peers included, who despise the second season of PEAKS and lament what could have been if Lynch had remained an integral part of the series. Looking back at it now, and watching the entire series on Netflix in a little less than a week, I loved virtually every second of it. Characters like Agent Cooper, Sheriff Harry Truman (Michael Ontkean,) Officer Andy Brennan (a scene-stealing Harry Goaz) receptionist Lucy Moran (Kimmy Robertson,) the Log Lady (Catherine E Coulson,) and Benjamin Horne (Richard Beymer) were quirky and engaging, and the various interconnecting plot lines was enthralling in their wonderful perplexity. After years of rumor, commitments, de-commitments, and outright rejection, David Lynch and the majority of the original cast of TWIN PEAKS has returned to television. Shedding the constraints of network television, Showtime has provided Lynch with the outlet to tell the story on his own terms. The first two episodes (out of the sixteen) of the third season debuted on May 21, and proved to be as perplexing and befuddling as any of the episodes from its initial run. Prior to this debut, the PEAKS return was shrouded in mystery, with everyone involved remaining tight-lipped about its content. Now we know that the series is neither a prequel nor a reboot, but rather, a direct continuation of the events that unfolded over 25 years ago. The cast list has grown exponentially beyond what it was in the 90’s, but many of the names remain the same. While their faces may have changed, and, as of the printing of this article, their roles have been yet to be fully established, there was certainly a level of nostalgic joy at seeing some of the returning players.

To say that TWIN PEAKS isn’t for everyone actually down plays how divisive this show is. For fans of Lynch this has been an adventure that has been two decades in the making.

As for the plot itself, at least in the first two episodes, it’s difficult to discern exactly where the tale is going. There is murder, mayhem, mystery, and elements of pure evil, which is to say, I have no idea what it’s actually about. To say that TWIN PEAKS isn’t for everyone actually down plays how divisive this show is. Lynch fans, myself included, are accustomed to the subtle humor, beautiful visuals, and head-scratching plot devices of the auteur filmmaker. For some, the weirdness is simply too much to handle, and will fail to enjoy the twisty (and twisted) journey that continues to unfold. For fans of Lynch, The Black Lodge, pie, and coffee, however, this has been an adventure that has been two decades in the making. (Seasons 1 & 2 now streaming on Netflix. Season 3 airs Sunday nights on Showtime, and is available through Showtime on demand.)

Word on the Street by BILL MCCLELLAN

Kim Jong-Un Nukes As our cities burn we will woe our failure to address the Nuclear Issue with encompassing intelligence and empathy for our country and our species. As most know, Kim Jong-un is the Supreme leader of the Republic of North Korea. Of all people on earth his presence is more likely to alter the course of humankind than any other. This was all foreseeable. Bush I, Clinton, Bush II and Obama all failed us. They watched with a shameful irresponsible complacent fear that froze their ability to act, as North Korea, in clear view of the world, continued their nuclear pursuit. Now they have the bomb that delivers pure hell on earth. They are on a fast track pursuit, seeking the missile technology to deliver this hell to America. For decades their calling has been American annihilation. Seoul has 22,480,000 people, Tokyo has 37,843,000. They are directly in the path of this maniacal country’s whim and the danger is current and incredibly grave. In a few years the USA— population 321,400,000—will be at North Korea’s mercy, (and there will be none). Everyone knew. And we watched. They seem to thrive on hate for America. Their people adhere with maniacal commitment to this horrifying naïve, nutty little leader. He is the nightmare within the nuclear world and he has arrived. The entire North Korean population has been brainwashed since birth,

CONGRATULATIONS

against America. This forced an unstable environment that should have rendered North Korean nuclear development unthinkable … “and we watched.” If we are to avoid the unthinkable we need to begin a long lost journey of building some sense of security in North Korean leaders, able to begin the reversal of North Korean paranoia. There has been a sense of obstinate superiority on our part that has prevented this. Diplomacy has been a very weak pursuit. The new South Korean President Moon Jae-in is willing to engage in talks with North Korea. If Trump could think with understand-

ing and meaning, a well thought out summit, with carrots and assurances may well produce acceptable outcome. Kim Jung-Un may well respond to respect and attention. North Koreans need to believe they have nothing to fear from us. Communication on every available level is a necessity. Apart from halting the pursuit of the capacity to do us or their neighbor’s nuclear harm, we must be clear we wish only for their success and well-being. Nothing short of this kind of diplomatic effort can stop this end-times pursuit of human obliteration on an untold scale. While ignoring this true eminent danger, our foolish leaders took us on this decade’s long foolish trip of bathing the Middle East with blood. With each death in each land came a huge family of unprecedented American hate. This mixed with a barbarous religion gave birth to an intense fanaticism seeking the most intense of human vengeance. A conviction to kill those that killed friends and family. Our leaders did this without the slightest concept of what held this radically religious place together. They did not consult Middle East Experts. There was no think tank to research the ways of the enemy. George II did not know the difference between a Shiite and Shia until the war was far underway. Look it up. And then google Arlington. When I was young I believed that great effort went into think tanks before life and treasure was spent in war. In truth, the entire Middle East debacle is the result of shooting from the hip, minimally informed on a tragic level, and driven by misplaced Presidential testosterone. I am a believer in the “John Wayne” approach. These guys did not know what it is. It is indeed action. But action mixed with great bravery, intelligence and indeed exhausted processes of the highest order that insure right. Then, yes heroes, decide and heroes step in and fight and win. Bush II and Cheney had no idea what they were doing. Bush II smirked and thought, “heh, you can’t do that to my Dad.” And off they went. As we tore apart the glue that held these countries together and wrought devastation and hate throughout the middle-east, we ignored North Korea.

Then we made a bad deal with Iran. This “deal” has cast a nuclear future and has simply moved forward an intolerable nuclear threat, especially to Israel. It also provided for a lifting of sanctions worth billions which is financing their ongoing murderous disruption of the Middle East. It was a coward’s deal. There is no provision to inspect for underground facilities. Advancements could easily be ongoing. Nine Countries possess nuclear bombs. The United States – 7300, Russia – 8000 the UK – 225, France – 300, China – 250, North Korea – 6-8, India – 90-110, Pakistan – 100-120, and Israel 80. The United State and Russia share 93% of the estimated 16,300 bombs that exist. Others share 1141 bombs. Most of us have never seen these figures. In America those that inform do not think that matters that can destroy humanity are worthy of even reasonable public education. Proliferation of recklessly protected nuclear materials and technologies among terrorists is a constant threat. Virtually every piece of nuclear material, spare parts and every scrap of lost or stolen nuclear technology must be found. The nuclear black market must be targeted with fierce determination. The plight of post-cold war, unemployed nuclear Scientists from Russia and former satellite countries must be investigated and the activities of each evaluated. Any proliferation from North Korea should be in the red line territory. There is no department of Nuclear Affairs that works 24-7 on all matters pertaining to Nuclear Danger and proliferation. No one coordinates knowledge and activity in one place. No one knows where all the bombs are. No one knows how many suitcase bombs there are, how many are missing, or who has them. We will use every force in mankind to find Bin-laden yet we barely look for the suitcase bombs, each powerful enough to take out Tel Aviv or Washington, D.C. Had an effective nuclear think tank existed the North Koran and Iranian threats would have been prioritized and halted long ago. This failure has endangered major cities and perhaps mankind.

Nuclear recklessness is the ultimate of despicable … and how we do business. You have the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs, The International Atomic Energy Agency and others, each with designated responsibilities. For example the IAEA regulates the use of nuclear technology so that countries that have signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and do not yet have nuclear weapons do not GET nuclear If we are to avoid the unthinkable we need weapons. However, this to begin a long lost journey of building some does not affect counsense of security in North Korean leaders, tries like Israel, India able to begin the reversal of North Korean and Pakistan, which paranoia. have never signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. No agency embraces in a reasonably encompassing way, what I list above. Our best are not in charge. All roads to oblivion are paved with self-interest and greed. Foremost are Nuclear, Climate, Environmental, and greedy economic decimation. We need to end Favor for Favor. We need to finance all elections. We need to replace the greedy self-centered hearts of current leaders with Patriots. Only when we see this, will the best that we can be govern our land. Selfishness will be removed from the chasm between ideologies and effective fairness and agreement will be found. When you replace self-centered hearts with Patriots they will think about human well-being. The future of mankind on these critical matters can be secured only by the best that humans can be. The greedy status quo is a glaring failure on every level. I have written about this for 30 years to no avail. The tree falls alone in the woods. Too bad. It is only mankind at stake.

1 jalapeño chile, seeded, finely chopped (4 tsp)

Directions: Mix garlic, pepper, and 1 1/4 teaspoons coarse salt in small bowl; rub all over steak. Let stand at room temperature 1 hour.

When you replace self-centered hearts with Patriots they will think about human well-being. The future of mankind on these critical matters can be secured only by the best that humans can be.
