equate to strength, genuine and comfortable just bein’ a dude among others, and un-boastfully intelligent. Easily approachable and likeable. Nice man who possesses mean hands when it comes to his music. And as seasoned as he is with a sly and humble mastery for the music—always dividing by the factor of relating to his audiences— he is also a seasoned conversationalist. (laughing)

Anecdotes of Music with Colin Aberdeen Some musicians are over it. When you start out, it’s easy to get caught up in the “glamor” of it all, feeling like a “rock star,” and all that. Yeah, right. Some fade away, some burn out. Some keep going. And as they keep going all the notions of glamor-life sort of turn insipid and silly. In the end you realize that this is simply, “what we do.” After all, by then the cool hair is gone. Still haven’t made Beatle Money. Can’t do fancy back flips on stage anymore without injuring the bass player. All there is left is the music. And an enormous love for it. You realize you don’t just love it. You live it. Meet Colin Aberdeen, if you haven’t already. He lives it. It’s what he does. This ain’t no flashy rock’n’roll jive-flash-in-the-pan mumbo jumbo. Colin’s the real deal. Which is why , after so many years, he’s still on the scene as a busy musician. Making it this far means you survived on the depth and quality of your music. Making it this far means that you are it—and it is you. And the whole thing is about the music. We need more musicians like this. Meet Colin. A mellow dude with something I call “grampa-quality.” In my experiences with him, he’s decidedly kind and generous of his better spirit—which I

Chuck Schiele: How’s it going Mr. Colin? Colin Aberdeen: Very well, Chuck. Thanks for the interview. CS: How long have you been playing music? How did you get started? CA: I’ve been playing music for about 34 years. I was a late bloomer. I moved from Tenafly, NJ to Syracuse as a sophomore in high school where I went to F-M for my final three years of high school. There I met some friends who like myself, spent more time learning outside the confines of the traditional curriculum, shall we say. They were burgeoning guitarists, they would play and by default, I sang because nobody else was up for it. After being evidently frustrated with my lack of interest in school, my dad asked me one day, “What do you want to do?” The implied part of that question being, we know what you don’t want to do, which is go to school. I was just getting a grip on the idea of trying to play guitar and would occasionally bang around on a friend’s instrument. I replied that I just wanted to travel and play music, even though I couldn’t play at all . He quietly pondered my response and that was that. My dad was a heavy dude and did not suffer fools, especially his own son. The following Christmas there was a cheap, very hard to play, acoustic guitar under the tree. It was a put up or shut up moment but very much in a positive and proactive way. CS: Please, define your music projects, and characterize them. CA: I started out playing solo, largely because my taste in what I wanted to play was eclectic. And, because I was a late bloomer I really sucked! So, I learned to play solo and support myself musically as a singer. I still play solo a lot and I incorporate both finger picking, which is a more pianistic style of guitar playing and includes contrapuntal bass and melodic parts and flat picking. I am a fairly rudimentary player and I tend to concentrate on the style, feel and groove of the song, primarily. And that has worked for me.

I eventually started a band called The Westcott Jugsuckers in the late 80’s with my friend Mike Petroff playing harmonica. It also included a guy I worked with at the time named Bill Kerner—one of the most innate musicians and guitarists I’ve ever known. Bill was far and away my greatest musical mentor and guide into true musicianship. In spite of being just a monster guitar player, Big Bill or Washboard Willie as he is known within the Jugsuckers, was hip and cool enough to play washboard with Mike and I, while we explored the joys of delta, and country blues. The Jugsuckers evolved to include a tuba player named Matt Schneider-Adams. When Mike left to pursue his first musical love, playing amplified Chicago blues harp with Dirty Pool, Curtis Waterman joined the band which eventually incorporated Rodney Zajac on baritone sax in place of Matt on the Tuba, who was called home to his day job as a minister. Shirley Woodcock-Kolb later joined us playing National tenor guitar, mandolin, six string guitar and vocals; and Herman “Hymie” Witthoft, who had been playing a bass drum in conjunction with Washboard Willie for a while, who took over on washboard, drums and percussion full time, when Bill moved on to play guitar, elsewhere. The Jugsuckers will be playing at this year’s NY State Blues Fest and at The Golden Harvest Festival at Beaver Lake Nature Center in September. I also play with a bad ass quartet called Los Blancos, which began with myself and guitarist Jose Alvarez, now a two-time Grammy award winner and continued on pg 4

Colin Aberdeen continued from pg 3 former touring member of Louisiana legend, Terrance Simien’s Zydeco Experience. Our original four-piece was rounded out with drummer Paul Roerhig, and my longest suffering associate, Steven T. Winston ably thumping the bass. When Paul left after completing his PHD, Garnet Grimm, who now tours the world as
the drummer in Savoy Brown , took over on the drums for about 5 years. The current and longest serving line up includes the inimitable Mark Nanni on the organ/keys/accordion, Mark joined the band just as Paul was transitioning out. After Garnett left, Mark Tiffault, a seemingly ubiquitous player in the most rockin’ bands from our region for the last 35 plus years, joined the band as our drummer. I love Los Blancos and I am immensely proud of it. CS: Tell us about your gear of choice. CA: I’m not a gear head at all. I just use what works. CS: You play covers and original music. Talk about how you select your cover material. Please also discuss how you go about writing your material. CA: Great question. Well, I’m a pretty simple guy, I tend to just play songs I like, to which I feel I can do some justice. I love turning people on to my heroes who are usually somewhat obscure to many, often in spite of their storied careers. As far as writing stuff goes, I usually get a little lyrical idea and/or a melody or feel and I just build it from there. My songs are usually fairly basic, nothing ground breaking. But, I have had great responses to some of them. Once again, too many to single them out. Firstly, being a member of Los Blancos, The Westcott Jugsuckers and the Barking Loungers and the very deep, rich regional music scene in which I have had the opportunity to learn. Especially all the blues cats, rockers, folk musicians, country players, funk bands, jazz cats, acoustics acts and R’n’B bands, alike in this area who helped to shape my ideas of what my music could sound like. But really, getting to share music I love w the people I have been lucky enough to play with, and for the audiences who have allowed us the opportunity to play for them. To be allowed to be part of the sound track of one’s community and peers, is the greatest honor of all. CS: Please share a funny gig war story. CA: wedding parties getting naked and boogyin’ on down, crazy bar brawls through the local Vermont cop even commented upon it, as we were literally stepping over the vanquished foes of the establishment as we put our gear in the van. I even played a wedding for a couple where the groom proposed as he was led them on a slow chase in the limo they had rented while mildly avoiding his inevitable capture. CS: Please share your views on the CNY music scene. CA: plex that it is not merited. It’s a great region with tons of talent in all manner of musical genres. We have great bands and musicians who are playing their making their way in the world who many people around here have never even moved on to larger and more active music business centers. What our music scene needs is more people and greater support at the existing venues and then

Colin Aberdeen continued from pg 5 act to support the poor struggling musicians and venues. It must be compelling for people to go and hear live music. They must feel driven to go and hear the bands and players because they just cannot stand to miss something. I hate that starving artist crap. Make it work, find a way, find your path and create your own scene.
I would just encourage young players to play music you love, are proud of and in which you are invested.

The live audience is a virtual extra member of the band in creating the experience. CS: What does the ol’Pro have to say for the budding musician? CA: I guess some of the best players I know have what I refer to as “golden handcuffs”, they play music solely for money that they don’t love just because it pays their bills. I do not fault them or blame them, it is a business and if you are going to make your living at it, that’s a situation in which, one may find one’s self. One thing I would add is, the idea that musicians who have day jobs are in any way lesser players is the most ridiculous bullshit I have ever heard in my entire life. Wes Montgomery held a day job his entire career and recorded as much brilliant and influential guitar playing as any musician of whom I am aware. Don’t let some insecure schnook impose that junk on you. CS: How is the summer schedule looking for your music endeavors? CA: My schedule is a little slower than in years past, but, as I have less commitments, I am able to pick up a lot of solo work, and to play with my trio, Colin Aberdeen and The Barking Loungers and Los Blancos. I’m very psyched to play the NY State Blues Fest with The Westcott Jugsuckers, Friday July 8th and we have some cool dates with Los Blancos, also, like the Boathouse Blues Festival, down in Romulus, NY on June 18. I have a live solo recording I am hoping to get released in the not too distant future. Los Blancos also has a real good recording in the can. And most importantly, I’m gonna be spending a bunch of time with my daughter, Marley, swimming, playing, grilling, chilling and generally having fun CS: I know you have even more than that going on. Where can we keep track of you and your music? CA: Chuck, I am kind of like a caveman in a modern world and one of the worst business people you’ll ever meet. Los Blancos has one at www.casablancos.com. Look me up on Facebag for now. I post my gigs there for the time being. CS: Ok, that about wraps it up, brother. Thank you, so much, for sharing some music time with us here at Table Hopping. CA: Thank, you, Chuck! Chuck Schiele is an award-winning musician, art director, producer, editorialist, artist, activist, member of SaltCityChill.com and fan of the CNY music scene. Kyle and I arrived at Yamasho Sushi Steakhouse on a warm May evening and as soon as we walked in we were immediately greeted by both a friendly hostess and the smell of delicious food being prepared. We were promptly seated at our hibachi table. We began our meal with a sashimi sampler, the chef’s selection of the freshest fish, served in a beautiful display. We also decided to order a Pink Lady Roll, a roll with spicy tuna, salmon, and cucumber wrapped inside of a stunning pink wrap. Believe me when I tell you that the sushi starters were equal parts work of art and deliciousness. For our entrees I ordered the hibachi scallops and steak and Kyle ordered the hibachi salmon and steak, both served with fried rice. Our server quickly brought our first course, a cup of warm and flavorful soup. Our next course was a house salad with freshly made ginger dressing which is just the perfect amount of sweet and tangy. While we were enjoying our first two courses our talented chef was busy creating our entrees while making onion volcanos, squirting sake, and tossing broccoli. It was entertaining and interactive! Everything on our heaping plates was extremely high quality, super flavorful continued on pg 11

Sharkey’s Bar and Grill Summer is finally here and now is the time to find the best summer hang out in all of Central New York. If you are looking for a great place to enjoy sun, sand, great music, hanging out with friends, good food and, of course, ice cold drinks, then look no further than Sharkey’s! Sharkey’s is conveniently located at 7240 Oswego Rd. in Liverpool. What really makes Sharkey’s unique is that it is a sports bar, a beach hang out, and even a banquet hall, all under one roof! The large and open layout of Sharkey’s allows for plenty of room for indoor activities like darts and ping pong and the outside boasts a patio bar, and the most beach volleyball courts in CNY. I met up with Jim and Kristin Nichols who were sitting on the patio at Sharkey’s on a beautiful spring day. They were watching their teenage sons, Walker and Ben, playing beach volleyball in one of the league matches. Jim and Kristin were enjoying a Hornitos Margarita while sampling the chicken and waffles-one of their new menu items. “There is nothing better than watching your kids play volleyball, and if they keep playing they will be really good,” Jim says proudly. Jim grew up on the beaches of Southern California, played 15 years on the AVP Pro beach volleyball tour, and met the love of his life and wife Kristin while playing at a beach tournament, so his best memories are of spending his days at the beach. This is the atmosphere that he has tried to bring to Sharkey’s. Jim told me that back in California people would automatically go to the beach after work or on the weekend to see what was going on and who was there, because that’s where everyone would hang out. Now, if you take that idea, and add in some ice cold Bud Light, you get Sharkey’s! Jim said that he loves to come to work because he gets to see all of his friends at

Sharkey’s and every day is like a party where everyone knows everyone. It is obvious that volleyball is Jim’s passion and a big part of what is happening at Sharkey’s, but they also have a ton of other great events throughout the summer! The leagues are open to all skill levels and you will be sure to meet a lot of new friends. To sign up or for more information, go to thebeachatsharkeys. com and speak to Beth Pastel who is really the person that makes the Sharkeys Volleyball leagues special.

It’s Alive! As a child, dough fascinated me. From colorful Play-Doh to sticking my hands in bread dough, this malleable object provided plenty of entertainment. I would stare at the bread dough my mom put in a glass bowl, waiting to see something happen. The dough seemed to have a life of its own, growing and expanding by as time went by. Little did I know that a single-celled organism was inside, alive and kicking! As an adult, I now have a better understanding of why that dough was growing before it was to become bread. That little life is called yeast, and it’s one of the four main ingredients of beer (along with hops, malted barley, and water). So what exactly is yeast, and why is it needed to make beer? As

There are thousands of living yeasts that exist; yet only two types (generally speaking) are used for beer – ale yeast and lager yeast. I kind of knew what it meant, but needed to revisit its meaning especially when it comes to my favorite beverage. Basically, the act of beer fermentation takes place when yeast enzymes are added to the aforementioned wort. This converts the sugars into alcohol. That bittersweet wort is generally cooled to about 75 to 80 degrees. Once it’s at an ideal temperature, yeast is then added. From there it multiplies quickly; within 24 hours, fermentation takes place! Imagine, if you will, a bubbling cauldron of Halloween lore. That’s what the fermentation tank looks like, with a layer of foam on the liquid’s surface. Of particular interest is the Brettanomyces yeast, otherwise known as “Brett.” In some Belgian ales (which have very particular flavors), Brett is commonly used. Lambics, gueuzes, Oud Bruins and Flanders Red Ales are made with Brett, as are some saisons (farmhouse ales). For me, I love anything that’s made with Brett. It gives a very specific flavor that I really adore (and others abhor). Haven’t tried any of these styles? Why not try a Lindemans Framboise, which is made with raspberries? The Write Stuff by NANCY ROBERTS
My Love Affair with Mystery Series It was many years ago now. A friend suggested I read - I think because I was a “cat person” - a mystery series known as “The Cat Who” books. Each book was entitled “The Cat Who...” (did something) and featured a cat with preternatural intelligence who would solve mysteries - typically murder - for his owner, a nouveau riche newspaper writer who, because of the requirements of his vast inheritance, has moved to a smallish city somewhere in what might be Michgan or might be Maine. The books are delightful. And I had discovered “cozy mysteries.” What is a cozy? Well, usually it involves a quirky individual in a smallish community who solves grizzly murder mysteries. Along the way, you’ll be treated to meals eaten, community events attended, quirky friends, a quirky romance or two, and the inner workings of a quirky job or hobby or lifestyle: reporter (that one is popular), minister, coroner or doctor, teacher - you get the idea. They’re called “cozies,” I suppose, in that they resemble that delightfully British invention, the “tea cozy.” A tea cozy is a typically quilted wrapper that goes around G reat for a tea pot WE DELIVER EXCITEMENT! them are based somewhere in Great Britain. I read (and listened) my way through all of The Cat Who - to the point of sorrow when the original writer passed away and was replaced with a writer who simply didn’t understand the style or the characters. This, of course, is an occupational hazard for series writers. The Cat Who, should you be so inclined, is an American series that features Jim Qwilleran, a crime beat reporter from a big city who has a drinking problem. He inherits - through murder - two Siamese cats, Koko and YumYum. He then inherits - through regular old death - a not-so-small fortune, but, to collect on it, must move to a small city in the middle of somewhere indefinable, but utterly likable. There, he turns the mansion he inherits over to the town for a museum, and remodels an apple barn into his summer quarters, and lives in a townhouse in the winter. He makes friends, joins civic organizations, attends parties, visits the local diner, finds a girlfriend (or two), and solves an inordinate number of murders for such a small community. But along the way, we are introduced to a variety of fun and lovable characters who become real for us, so that we look forward to each new meeting. And of course, there is the other necessary element for any cozy mystery: you must have many of the clues the main character does so you can start guessing whodunit as you read. Having run out of The Cat Who I then discovered Hamish MacBeth. Hamish lives in the Highlands, Scotland, in a wee town where everybody knows everybody’s business, so everybody knows that Hamish is sweet on the daughter of the Laird, has a cat and a dog, and needs Voted Used Bo Best a wife, for ok S in Syrac tore Heaven’s sake. use There are a pair of oddball sisters, and the occasional visitor from elsewhere, but as Hamish is a • Cash paid for books • handsome, if slightly unreli2443 James Street • Eastwood (Across from Palace Theatre) • (315) 437-2312 Mon – Sat 10:00 – 6:00 • Sun 11:30 – 5:00 • www.thebooksend.com

Keeping Beauty Simple This Summer
Pick up a creamy blush and pat it into your skin for a natural look that gives you a healthy glow.
Lately I can’t scroll through Instagram or walk to work without seeing girls with super harsh contours, highlights you can see from Mars, and matte liquid lipsticks that look as dry as the Sahara. The makeupobsessed have officially gone Kardashian crazy and while there is never a look I won’t try once or even a dozen times, I am not feeling the cakey trend this summer. As the sun starts beating down on me, my main concern is having a good SPF and makeup that is not going to melt as soon as I leave the comfort of my own AC. As a beauty

Ditch the liner and go for an all-over shimmer. Word on the Street by BILL MCCLELLAN
A Must Read For Every American This article may well be among the most important you will ever read. If you are not aware of these things you will go through life, as most have, believing in falsehood and oblivious to the mechanics of your surroundings. America is beginning to come to terms with the truth. “We do not have democracy.” We have powerful wealthy that carefully work behind the scenes to select Political contestants that will abide by their concerns. 50 States provided them with a perfect platform in which to design an absurdly complex system that would hide their ultimate power under a veneer of false democracy. We have 300 million people and the party’s main choice was a complicit brother and son of a President. You had no input. So you begin under the false premise of choice. This cycle they were not prepared for a Trump. Otherwise their candidate would have enjoyed the fruit of the following corruption: This article is meant to be a candidate and party neutral expose’ of the illegitimacy of the Republican and Democratic parties in claiming to be part of a democracy. Semi-legitimacy and severe complexity is their deceptive scheme. In the primaries semi-legitimacy of the delegate process is the con. Follow me closely and this brief description of a small part of this distorting process will change your feelings toward our government forever. Let’s take Democrats for this

example noting that similar principles apply to Republicans. You need 2,383 delegates to win the Democratic nomination. The states hold elections. There is a total of 4765 delegates. Each state has a certain amount of delegates, all of them totaling 4,051. These 4,051 delegates are chosen by approximately 20,000,000 democrats in 50 states and territories. Then you have 714 or approximately 20% that are super delegates remaining. The vast majority of whom are bribed by the party to secure their vote. They vote for anyone they want all time. This translates into 714 mostly bribed people having extraordinary superior power far in excess of the 20%, or 4,000,000 people. This power in excess of the 4,000,000 comes from the fact they have choice in the first vote at the convention. The 4,051 or 80% that are the people’s delegates do not. They are bound to the people’s choice in the first vote. Now if neither candidate reaches the 2,383 needed to win in the first vote these corrupt geniuses decided the entire will of all the millions of voters no longer matters and the choice is made by delegates. No one is bound in the 7439 CANTON ST. RD. BALDWINSVILLE, NY 2nd vote. There is no fairness, no equality and no justice. This is a 315-635-9826 very long way from democracy. Now, the super delegate selection process is a manipulating art form and delegates are chosen in ways that will insure a candidate acceptable to the party is selected. They are rewarded and bribed in multiple ways that have nothing to do with the people, and their support may well determine the Presidency. Until now, no one has ever overcome PER PERSON these weighted rules. This entire process is a disgrace designed (SAVE $14) with enormous complexity to defraud America of electing their Minimum 2 Persons own leaders. So that the rich can get richer. In one scenario, in Call For Availability the event Hillary and Bernie are close to say 2000 delegates each, elected by the people, the 714 super delegates determine the nominee. were selected in a filthy process requiring an article of its own. If Trump did not reach 1237 in the first vote, 56 would vote against the people and for Cruz in the 2nd vote. As the arrows of deceit and corruption keep piercing the arrows already in the absolute heart of democracy, take a look at Pennsylvania. Of 71 delegates 54 are not bound to anyone in the 1st or any vote, period. This completely nullifies the peoples input on these 54 and renders the people’s candidate choice useless. And this is just the Primary. The electoral process in the General is equally disturbing. The semi-legitimacy of the electoral system ignores the popular vote. Who gets the most votes does not determine the winner. They ignore 40 states they brand as lost causes in the process because of predictability. A few Swing states such as Ohio, Texas and Florida become the focus and absorb all the power and influence. Candidates and potential candidates perpetually enrich swing states whenever it will be noticed in hopes of securing favor in future elections. Elections can be decided by one or two small states rather than by the collective popular vote. It’s entirely possible to win the presidency by only campaigning and winning in 11 states. Then you have matters of disenfranchisement such as the glaring disgrace of gerrymandering, voter ID laws, literacy tests and poll taxes. The fix goes on and on. At the end of the day the rich take it all. For electoral antidemocratic variables you may go to https://www. minnpost.com/eric-black-ink/2012/10/10-reasons-
why-electoral-college-problem Like him or not Donald Trump is the first to break through this massive con job. Bernie is getting close. Like vampires entering the daylight, parties and their bosses are glaringly exposed as even in the face of manifest defeat, they are scrambling for a way to circumvent the will of millions of voters. Now the talk is all about uniting. That means Trump (or Bernie if he wins), capitulating to the party. They war against the people even after the people have spoken. The parties refuse to see that it is rejection of them that caused the Bernie/Trump phenomenon. This article is intended to show the absurd fraud that has been perpetrated on the American people. America was born of an ideal that a government can be fair and just to all. 8 men set this course. Founding Fathers: John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, James Monroe, Thomas Jefferson, John Jay, James Madison and George Washington. Their intent was to design a government that would serve its people with an equality and justice never before known in human history. In to perpetuity. Our Constitution was carefully designed. Its intent is glaringly and beautifully clear throughout. There was a catch. In order for this to succeed Government must have integrity or “Clear Intent” would be butchered into self- serving digression. I have shown you an example of this butchery. Just the tip of the iceberg. Our land is way, way off course. continued on pg 24

A Must Read For Every American continued from pg 23 Here are a few highlights of Benjamin Franklin’s words delivered on September 17, 1787, the last day of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, followed by affirming fair warning by both Franklin and Theodore Roosevelt. (Note Franklin’s concern for “intent” in his “well administered” warnings) “Most men indeed as well as most sects in Religion, think themselves in possession of all truth, and that wherever others differ from them it is error. Il n’y a que moi qui a toujours raison.” (It’s just me that always has reason “Latin”) ~Benjamin Franklin “In these sentiments, Sir, I agree to this Constitution with all its faults, if they are such; because I think a general Government necessary for us, and there is no form of Government but what may be a blessing to the people if “well administered”, and believe farther that this is likely to be well administered for a course of years, and can only end in Despotism, as other forms have done before it, when the people shall become so corrupted as to need despotic Government, being incapable of any other.” ~Benjamin Franklin “Much of the strength & efficiency of any Government in procuring and securing happiness to the people, depends, on the general opinion of the goodness of the Government, as well as the wisdom and integrity of its Governors. I hope therefore that for our own sakes as a part of the people, and for the sake of posterity, we shall act heartily and unanimously in recommending this Constitution wherever our influence may extend, and turn our future thoughts & endeavors to the means of having it “well administered”. ~Benjamin Franklin “To permit every lawless capitalist, every law-defying corporation, to take any action, no matter how iniquitous, in the effort to secure an improper profit and to build up privilege, would be ruinous to the Republic and would mark the abandonment of the effort to secure the spirit of democratic fair dealing.” ~Teddy Roosevelt “The first truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people

That, in its essence, is fascism -- ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power.... It is meant only to assist in exposing the disgraceful deceit that has been ruining our Countries intent. Preventive Medicine by DR. BARRY
Chronic Care Management (CCM) You Want It & You Want It Now! I have written separately about the way that Medicare and other insurance companies are going to change the way they reimburse doctors. The government wants to move away from paying a doctor or physician extender a fee for each visit and moving towards paying for measures of performance. These include the percentage of patients that have had a mammogram, the doctors immunization rate, their hospital readmission rate..their management of heart failure etc...These seem like good ideas but ,as always, the devil is in the details. One of the ways that Medicare intends to reimburse doctors is based on the management of the patients chronic medical conditions and this part is called the CCM program. Although I am no fan of a lot of things about Medicare I am a big fan of this program and once you hear about it you will be as well. Listen, I don’t have to try to sell you anything here. This is not my program. I have a program..SignatureMD ...this has nothing to do with that. This is a first ever available extra level of coordination of your care, This is a program crafted by Medicare which finally acknowledges the tremendous amount of work it takes to really coordinate care properly for patients with multiple chronic illnesses. This is not for the young ,

Chronic Care Management means your primary caregiver is taking extra steps to have someone check up on you regularly and actively so that we know you are not missing medications, appointments etc. or the healthy...They don’t need their care coordinated. When you start seeing more than 2 doctors regularly you qualify. When you have multiple caregivers changing medications or ordering tests you qualify. When you have two or more significant health issues on an ongoing basis you qualify. You get the idea. Chronic Care Management means your primary caregiver is taking extra steps to have someone check up on you regularly and actively so that we know you are not missing medications, appointments etc,. You have a dedicated person overseeing all your visits. This involves making sure all the providers and whatever family members the patient has designated have all the same information. This involves more transparent but HIPPA etc compliant access to the patient’s medical history. This involves following up on all the appointments and reviewing independently all the records. This is a person reaching out to the patient on an ongoing basis to minimize the screw ups that could have serious consequences. Do I have to go there? Last month’s British Medical Journal suggested that medical mistakes could be the third leading cause of death in America. Really?! This program could significantly impact that likelihood and its covered by insurance. !! If this is now available and you are eligible why wouldn’t you give this a try? For the doctor this is extra work and there is an extra charge. . Most, if not all, of the cost is covered by Medicare, Medicare Advantage and Blue Cross / Blue Shield. This is an available, covered, upgrade to your medical care that could save your life or your mother’s life... if you are a child living out of town or across town worried about your momma! Accurate information , easily accessed, can make an immense difference in your care and in your ultimate health care spending and that’s why Medicare and some of the big insurance companies are so interested in it. They see the financial advantage and that’s their job... I see the advantage to your health and health care! Your primary care physician is supposed to be the conductor of the orchestra . He’s the one that refers patients to other doctors and then follows up with the other appointments and tests that were ordered etc. This sounds simple and appropriate but in the real world this is very fragmented. Some patients know the medicine changes that their last specialist made and many don’t. Some patients remember all their appointments and some patients don’t. If You have multiple medical problems or see multiple specialists... good luck at keeping the communication open and up to date. This is extremely difficult in practice. One patient could have a cardiologist, a kidney doctor, an eye doctor, a vascular surgeon, etc. and each of them is trying to keep in communication with the others and is a very fragmented system. Currently the electronic medical records do not communicate well with each other. This will not be fixed anytime in the near future. It infuriates me when patients tell me... ”the doctor didn’t have the report”... perhaps you have had a similar experience? Once a doctor recommends that the patient see a specialist he may have no way of knowing what day the visit was, what the findings were etc. until the doctor sends his report. Some offices are quick with their reports and some are not so quick. continued on pg 28

Tales from the Vine by CASSANDRA HARRINGTON
Bangles & Bottles on the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail On the first Tuesday of every month, the marketing gurus from member wineries gather to brainstorm creative ideas for attracting customers to the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail. Some ideas are completely insane and we often leave the meeting not having agreed on anything in particular. Other days, we skip out the door with our head held high with great anticipation of the new and exciting promotional efforts we’ve developed. As for any promotion, the first few steps are to determine who you are targeting and how best to get your information in front of your target audience. Our latest wish was to get more of the casual summer travelers into the tasting rooms. In our culture, it is often more common for women to be the travel planners. In attempt to put the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail in front of the female travel planner, we then discuss things that women like. Most recently, we discussed jewelry. Many women love jewelry and if you add wine into the mix, you likely have some very happy ladies! As a group, we toss ideas out until we get something that resonates with the majority. Things like collector’s pins, dangly charm bracelets, earrings, necklaces and more were contemplated. After some time, we narrow our ideas down to the favorites and it’s time to go shopping! The research phase is a guilty pleasure of mine. I then search the cost associated with each of our project ideas and report back to the committee with my findings. After a thorough investigation, I identified a company that produces custom-order charm bracelets and another that produces custom-order pins, much like those sold and traded at theme parks. I returned to the next month’s meetings with my findings and after reviewing all the information, the group decided custom charm bracelets were the way to go. The remainder of the meeting was then dedicated to plotting out logistics and branding. It was at that point that our new summer promotion, Bangles & Bottles was born! Just last week, the Trail launched ticket sales. For $60, ticket holders have the months of July Eastwood’s Neighborhood Wine Store and August to visit all the member wineries to collect 16 charm bangles, a different one from each location. While visiting, they will also be offered one Winemakers Pick sample at each winery and an additional 5% wine discount on top of already-established discounts. For example, if a winery offers 10% EASTWOOD PLAZA off a case purchase, ticket holders 3515 James St., Syracuse, New York will get 15% off that case during 437-WINE (9463) the months of July and August.
We have spent weeks designing sixteen adorable bracelets that we absolutely cannot wait to start handing out. We’re hoping that Bangles & Bottles will capture the attention of many jewelry-wearing, wine-loving women just like myself!
We have spent weeks designing sixteen adorable bracelets that we absolutely cannot wait to start handing out. Chronic Care Management continued from pg 26 What if I don’t get a report. How can I review a report I didn’t get? What if the patient misses the appointment or a test or labs? What if another health care provider changes the patient’s medications? Sometimes important details are lost in a 310 page consultation note and it is a nightmare trying to keep the medical record true and correct let alone attend to the myriad details of the outside consultations, tests and appointments. This is very difficult and important work and finally the importance of this work has been recognized and codified. So Medicare has offered physicians a monthly extra monthly incentive to really step up and stay on top of patient’s care. To actually “coordinate the care”. This means hiring someone in particular who will monitor the appointments, the results, coordinate communication between the medical offices etc. on an ongoing basis. I can either hire one person to manage between 200/250 patients or I can outsource it to professionals. Luckily, here in America, companies have risen to the occasion to offer this service to physicians and their patients. The internet, the fax machine and the phone enables the coordinator to work from anywhere. Anywhere for me at least means anywhere in America. The person coordinating your care will be calling you from somewhere in the USA. I understand the reasons to outsource to China but this is way too important to handle offshore. This is a new program. These are new opportunities to improve patient care. This is actually the most proactive thing for patients I have ever seen Medicare do. EVER . I think this can really make a difference by decreasing errors and increasing communication. In terms of medical dollars this is dirt cheap and can have a big impact. It’s encouraged and covered by many insurance companies and each patient can sign up or drop out anytime for any reason. I always find that type of arrangement very reassuring. No special contracts. This is an opportunity for patients to get better co ordination of their care by a incentivized caregiver. This sounds like a winwin to me. Again, this is not some crazy program I have cooked up. This is a program that has been encouraged by the government and is part of current and future Medicare programming. Usually the other major insurance companies follow suit. For people with com-
Chronic Care Management is a program crafted by Medicare which finally acknowledges the tremendous amount of work it takes to really coordinate care properly for patients with multiple chronic illnesses. plicated medical situations or any combination of serious chronic medical conditions this level of oversight can make a real difference in your health. Best of all is that this is not some limited time offer, this is not something available only to the first 100 callers... this is something your primary care practice can be doing. This, as I have said, is a new program and many practices just don’t know how to approach this program but it’s something that every office can do in one form or another. This program, like the cognition test Cognivue, passes my test. For me the test.. ”Is it in the best interest of the patient?” This could be a great thing for patients if it works out. It may turn out to be too good to be true but you must know by now that I am an Optimist. Check out this new program and how it can make a difference in your life or the life of someone you love! This is the shizzle my nizzle!

Exercise & Fitness by JENNIFER NASTASI GUZELAK
Just Like You When you think of the kind of person that would belong to a gym what comes to mind? Many of us have the perceived notion that it’s for the beautiful, the athletes and the “over achievers.” We don’t always think about the REAL people that walk through the door and swipe their cards every day - the baby boomers, people who are overweight, those who have never stepped foot in a gym before, and individuals that have a disability. The reality is, while more than one-third of Americans are obese, the statistics are even more dire for people with disabilities. Over forty percent are obese and more than nine percent are “extremely obese.” In addition, people with disabilities (no matter their weight) are more likely than those without disabilities to have heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes. People with disabilities face at least one of four barriers when trying to engage in physical activity: fatigue, pain, mobility impairments, stress and sometimes all of the above. This makes it difficult to engage in healthy behaviors, which results in secondary conditions such as obesity, depression and muscular atrophy. It’s a vicious cycle! Another barrier is cost. Not only is accessible equipment expensive, but people with disabilities are also more likely to be unemployed or underemployed than the rest of the population. This certainly can play into obesity since they may not be able to afford, prepare or access healthier food. On the upside, technology to help people with disabilities get moving is improv-

There are many options now that are technology-free and fitness professionals (especially at Champion Fitness Center) are more educated and equip to work with these individuals than ever before as the number of participants in the gym continues to increase. The trick to helping someone stay active no matter what their disability may be is to be creative! Here are a few REAL stories from REAL members at Champions who have a disability.

I am Kara Vander Veer (see picture) and I am 40 years old. I have Cerebral Palsy. It affects my speech and muscles. It does not affect my intelligence. I have obstacles every day. One of the major obstacles I have overcome recently is finding a way to exercise and maintain the physical abilities I do have. About three years ago I joined a gym and started working with personal trainer Jennifer Nastasi-Guzelak. Together we developed a workout that focuses on building my strength and increasing my flexibility. When I first started, I was lifting 2 pound wrist and ankle weights. Now I am up to 16 pounds on my wrists and 20 pounds on my ankles. I have gained 7 pounds since I’ve started - which is a big deal for me! Going to the gym has also continued on pg 30

My name is Erica Lynn Nystrom (shown in picture) and I am a 29 year old amputee, missing both of my legs below the knee and parts of both of my hands. I have been an amputee for just over 5 years. One of the hardest things for me to deal with after losing my legs due to months of being inactive was the weight gain. In late June of last year, I walked through the doors of CrossFit Transformation, where I was introduced to coach, Sarah Stoetzel. Sarah had never worked with an amputee, but was ready to dive right in with me. I had expressed to her that one of the most important things to me was to be able to do the workouts without my prosthetic legs because they posed different challenges. July 1st, 2015 was my first day working out with Sarah and although I was nervous and intimidated at the thought of even trying, I was committed to giving it my all. I did one on one sessions with Sarah for a couple of months while she figured out modifications for me to do the things all of her other clients were doing. She then started to transition me in to classes. I was worried about whether or not the other members would accept me, but every single person was so kind, helpful and welcoming. I started out doing such basic things, using light weights and only working out for a few minutes at a time. My back squat in the beginning was 95 pounds and is now 175 pounds. I couldn’t do more than a few sit-ups when I began, and now most recently I am up to 110! I have done workouts that last over 40 minutes and I am able to keep up with those around me. I’ve dropped weight, increased my strength and have a new found Erica Lynn Nystrom is an amputee. Now, I couldn’t imagine my life without it. I thought at first that I was the only one who struggled, mentally and physically in workouts. Once I started working out with others, I quickly realized, we all have our strengths and weaknesses. We all struggle and have good days and bad days. It has nothing to do with being disabled; it is because we are human. What seems impossible today will one day become your warm up.

Working with a fitness professional has increased my physical abilities as well as my self-confidence, regardless of my physical limitations. Chuck Marchione
My story begins a little later in life. My name is Chuck Marchione and I train with Dan Gaglianese. After retiring with 20 years from the Army Reserves I felt I was in need of an activity that would keep me motivated and help maintain my level of fitness. Unfortunately, at this time, I also started experiencing numbness and tingling in my extremities. Turns out, I had Multiple Sclerosis. I had just been diagnosed with a debilitating disease. It was highly recommended I maintain some level of activity. At the time, I was a new gym member and wondered if I needed or even wanted a personal trainer? I never really considered it before, but had never been in this situation before either. Turns out to be the best decision I could have ever made. With the additional knowledge and experience of a personal trainer I have totally revamped my diet. I have a new found respect for simple stretching and blood-flow/circulation and have come to the understanding that more weight is not always the best way to improve. Aquatic Therapy is another advantage to belonging to Champions and it has made quite a difference. I have been at Champions member for almost 6 years and I have had a trainer since I started. I am quite confident that working with Dan has been one of the best decisions I have made since I have been put in this situation. Quite simply, some people work out to gain weight, get faster or get stronger. My situation, I train to remain vertical.
In Conclusion
“Never” does not exist for the human mind… only “Not yet.” Exercise is for EVERY body. Someone who has a disability is just like YOU. Don’t you and I have challenges to overcome when we workout at a gym? Aren’t there things that we can’t do or have a hard time with at first? The bottom line is we all have challenges and we all have excuses! Let’s get over them and let’s make the commitment to lead a healthy, active lifestyle!

My Mind To Yours
by DEBRA MERRYWEATHER
Let’s Talk Addiction specialists, public officials and the families of addicts confronting rising heroin addiction suggest that Central New York needs more treatment facilities and better physician training regarding opioids. In other news, in an effort to address postpartum depression, a local OBG practitioner has begun meeting with patients in groups so the patients themselves can discuss their symptoms, coping mechanisms and find that they are not alone.
Communication is a start.
Community-based conversations provide forums where people can voice individual perspectives and experiences with conditions ranging from chronic pain to depression. The reality is people are not always ready to speak openly in the same ways or at the same time. Unfortunately, people seeking help with coping problems or substance issues too often find themselves viewed solely in terms of those problems rather than as whole persons seeking help with one facet of their multifaceted lives. Once labeled with a problem, the “identified patient” often becomes the scapegoat for problems shared by family and community around them. After all, if an individual among many admits to needing help, that person must be the one with the problem. Case closed, right? It is enough to make one seek therapy. I experience anxiety. My anxiety at times compels me to talk too much,
Addiction specialists, public officials and the families of addicts confronting rising heroin addiction suggest that Central New York needs more treatment facilities and better physician training regarding opioids. which creates more anxiety, an anxiety likely rooted in early traumas and brain injuries I could not understand and about which I could not talk. I’ve done my research. I recommend Edmund Bourne’s “The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook,” which addresses substances including food.
Let’s talk.

Stroke, concussion, environmental stress, drugs, excessive alcohol, and lack of sleep can injure brain and mind-body connections. ics and some psychiatric drugs alter neural connections resulting in the inability to sense danger, filter environmental stimuli, and assertively navigate interpersonal relationships. There are many books and websites devoted to how brains, bodies and chemicals interact. We are chemical beings bonded together in a chemical world. Opium is a powerful and useful pain reliever. According to Wikipedia, opium use dates back to 5000 BC. In the 1800’s, to those who could afford it, American physicians and entrepreneurs offered pain relief, sound sleep and overall well-being in laudanum, an alcohol/opium tincture combination no one suspected was as addictive as it was. Physicians prescribed laudanum to women for pain from cramps, childbirth and postpartum distress. Laudanum users did not aspire to be addicts. Addicts rarely do. Traditionally society has been quick to look down on the poorest substance abusers. Maybe that will change. Current research such as the Aversive Childhood Experiences Studies, ACES, trace many health problems, including substance abuse, back to undiagnosed, untreated and unexamined childhood injuries and trauma. I am not an addiction counselor, but it seems to me that programs intended to heal addicts should address the whole person, taking into account environmental stress, interpersonal safety concerns and family history. Such treatment should be non-judgmental. Addiction is generally a symptom of something before it becomes the primary problem. Active addiction occurs in some context.
OK. Enough about that.
More than a few books on addiction suggest addiction is so powerful that rats will walk across electrified screens to get to drug laced water. Other studies suggest caged rats will choose drug laced water over food. Such studies rarely address the reality that caged rats allowed relief only if they walk across electrified screens are trauma victims, and like human trauma victims, are very likely to self-medicate their pain. In his book about addiction, “Chasing the Scream,” writer Johann Hari describes an experiment conducted by researcher Bruce Alexander. Professor Alexander created an environmentally rich “rat park,” providing his rats with food, toys, space, companion rats of both sexes, and, drug laced water. The rats ignored the drugs. Professor Alexander then went further taking a caged- I say traumatizeddrug-addicted rat and released the addicted/traumatized rat into the rat park. Left to its own devices and with multiple healthy options, the rat chose food, companionship and play over the readily available drug-water. Johann Hari and Bruce Alexander also state what should be obvious: most people suffering broken bones or recovering from surgery take opioids as directed for as long as they need pain relief. Addiction is the exception, not the rule. Kierkegaard said, “Life can only be understood backwards but must be lived forwards.” There is cause and effect involved in any journey from birth to addiction. It helps to Writer Johann Hari’s book “Chasing explore that journey and when the Scream,” deals with addiction. you’re ready, talk.

Zoolander 2 We are in an era of reboots and sequels, and have been for some time now. Many films that enjoy moderate success are revisited by studios as a seemingly sure-fire way to cash in on an established name. After the success of ZOOLANDER in 2001, and given star/writer/director Ben Stiller’s track record for portraying successful characters more than once (NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM, MEET THE PARENTS) it was a nobrainer that he would eventually give dimwitted fashion superstar Derek Zoolander another chance to unleash Blue Steel upon the world. What no one could have expected, was that it would take 15 years to pass before ZOOLANDER would hit the big screen again. With the amount of time that had ZOOLANDER 2: F passed, you would have been safe to assume that the only way Stiller would resurrect the clueless model would be if he had some fantastic material that longed to be shared with the world. 2. In a small bowl combine olive oil, garlic, oregano, basil, kosher salt, pepper and balsamic vinegar. 3. Pour the dressing over the vegetables, coating evenly. 5. Heat your grill to high. 6. Zoolander 2 continued from pg 36 door for a witty (albeit sophomoric) social satire that would poke fun at the cornerstones of modern society and celebrity. ZOOLANDER 2 did none of these things. An early contender for worst film of 2016, it was a laughless and lackluster venture that was painful in its hollow aversion to originality. In the beginning of the film, we find Zoolander in shambles. After the death of his wife (she was crushed when The Derek Zoolander Center for Kids Who Can’t Read Good and Who Wanna Learn to Do Other Stuff Good Too collapsed) and subsequently losing custody of his son Derek Jr., he begrudgingly announces his retirement from modelling. When a number of celebrities begin to die, however, Zoolander is called in to help. Why is he connected to the rash of murders? Before Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato, Lenny Kravitz, and many others were slain, they all took selfies of themselves doing Derek’s legendary Blue Steel. As a result, the Fashion Division at Interpol, led by Agent Valentina Valencia (Penelope Cruz), convinces Derek to get back into the game, and help crack the case. Virtually every joke in ZOOLANDER 2 is a resounding misfire. There are plenty of celebrity cameos that should have added zest and life into the comedy, but even these fail to illicit little more than a few halfhearted chuckles. Many of the bits and one-liners were mere replicas of what was delivered in the original flick, and feel stale and dated. Derek’s baffling stupidity, which was endearing and hilarious in 2001, feels wholly forced and uninspired. Despite the best attempts by Stiller and Owen Wilson (who reprises his role as Hansel) to generate laughs, they are very far and few between. Even the addition of Kristen Wiig (as an over-the-top fashion designer) and the return of Will Ferrell (as the evil Jacobim Mugatu) fail to save this disaster. Ferrell doesn’t show up until the last third of the film, and it is when he finally arrives that a few humorous moments emerge. His manic, absurd, and completely absurd portrayal of Mugatu is the one bright spot in an otherwise dim affair.

Computers & the Web by NANCY ROBERTS
Hiding From The Right? You’ve probably heard about the “Facebook algorithm change,” and the big meeting with reps of the Conservative social/political position because of the perception that Facebook has been actively blocking what’s “trending” from that end of the pool. This is as opposed to simply letting a numerical system identifying key words indicate which words or strings of words are appearing most frequently, but having an editorial team actively suppress content, as tech website Gizmodo contends is the case. They probably have. Whether it’s provable is another story. I’ve got to hand to it him, Mark Zuckerberg has been canny from the moment Facebook was released. Google used many of the same tactics in making the brand, the platform, desirable because you couldn’t have it. When FB first hit, it was only for Harvard students, then students and grads. Then students at Ivies. Then subIvies (that’s about where I was “allowed” to join). Then any college graduate. Then it opened up to more age groups, and finally, the world. But by withholding membership, it became something you had to have. Google, recall, was a “by invitation only” email system when it first launched. Well then, having an @gmail.com was a sign that you were somebody. You were cool. Both behemoth platforms have become so ubiquitous they more or less leapt over “meh, everybody’s got that, and went straight from “in crowd” to default. But therein lies the issue that the political/social Right is having with particularly Facebook. It’s become too big, too important, too much of a magnifying glass in
Facebook recently had a meeting with reps of the Conservative social/political position because of the perception that Facebook has been actively blocking “trending” conservative topics. Inset: Mark Zuckerberg founder of Facebook. our day to day lives. We believe it. So if it were lying to us, it could be serious. And it could be too powerful. In case you’ve been napping under the proverbial Rock, you know that all results when searching online are served to you based on this thing called the “algorithm.” It’s the set of rules by which relevance is determined. In search engines, like Google, it has been many things at many different times, but what brought Google to its pinnacle (from which it has never been toppled and probably won’t be barring a major hack or server farm disaster) was that when you searched for something, it gave you back what you wanted. I used to giggle - all puns intended - with glee when doing

the call-in show, Point ‘n’ Click, when, as we would be discussing a caller’s tech question, I’d type in a search word or string into Google and get back some information so on-topic it was almost eerie. Needless to say, I, and many others, fell in love with the search tool and abandoned most others. In fact, while Yahoo, for example, has taken the path of becoming a portal as much as or more so than a search tool, Google has become a utility, of which search is just a piece (think mail, hangouts, a Facebook alternate called Google+, a blogging utility, Contact manager, and even cloud drive). However, much as we love our Google, if we really began to feel that search results were being withheld from us, or that our individual, as opposed to aggregate, data was being used against us (this is a bit of a conundrum, though, because the more a search engine “knows” about you, the better it can predict what you’ll most want when you search for something), we would rebel and the door would be open to an alternative. So Google has been careful to “not be evil,” but still show us what we’re looking for, creepy though it may be. Facebook, however, has played a more manipulative game. From that fateful day in 2006 (can you believe that?) when it first launched its News Feed, Facebook has tried to shape your online world. I remember the day it first dawned on me I wasn’t seeing everything everyone I was friends with was putting up. Well, duh. It only stands to reason there’s just so much you can possibly take in, so not every cookie your friend from high school 30 years ago shows off on Facebook was going to end up in your news feed. But do you remember the very old days when, if you wanted to know what was new with a friend you had to deliberately seek them out and scroll through their posts and pictures? Now you could just sit back and let the world come to you. But let that sink in a bit. Let the world come to you. Before that, the world you got was the world you went looking for: “Oh, I’ll check and see what my sister has done recently.” Now it was a constantly moving series of announcements - but not all of them - from friends and family, and odd people you didn’t really remember ever having met, but hey, what the heck. Then in 2007 FB added the “Like” button, and the game changed again. Now you could react - sometimes strangely given that someone might announce “my dog just died” and you’d hit the “Like” button for commiseration. From that point on, FB became - and allowed you to become - more and more selective in what you saw. You could engage filters to see or be seen, and FB could analyze your “Like” pattern and choose more of the same for you to view. The big question now is whether FB has been, recently, playing “fair,” or if it even has an obligation to play fair as a private business that you can opt out of if you wish. (More and more Millennials are moving over to Instagram, a social app that sputtered along for a while as mostly a means of sharing images that you could artfully doctor, but now has replaced FB for this cohort. Incidentally, Instagram is owned by Facebook, so there you go.) Does FB have a responsibility to show you the broad spectrum of political opinion? Does FB have to be honest about what’s trending - even if what’s trending isn’t what their editor’s like agree with? Don’t be too fast to make a choice here: knowing that something you don’t like is trending could be both a danger and a warning. Not knowing that a pernicious idea was percolating to the top could put you in the unhappy position of having no alert. On the other hand, having people repeating, again and again, a silly, wrong, or nasty idea - and therefore having it trend heavily - could also lull you into agreement. I can’t tell you how many times I, and I’m sure many others, read one of those - ok, I’ll call it as I see it - rotten stupid memes, taken a little time to research it, and then refuted it (wasting my precious finger tips in the effort, no doubt). Yet on and on they go, and where they stop - and how much damage they do along the way - nobody knows. So. Facebook: is it quashing Conservative thought and opinion? Or for that matter, any other thought and opinion? If it is, then what? How much influence, really, does Facebook have over our thoughts, ideas, moods, and opinions? (Some studies suggest a lot, most of it negative.) Well, here’s my answer for now: Google “is Facebook suppressing Conservative ideas,” and what you’ll get is what you know you’ll get: NPR says “Not really,” Hotair says “Definitely.” My algorithm predicted that!
