Sounds Of Syracuse
by CHUCK SCHIELE
The Persistence of Joanna Nix Jewett She’s a busy girl. Over the years, Joanna has shared her vocal talents with more than a handful of central New York’s artists; and she’s participated in numerous recording projects. You remember her as the lead singer of Syracuse area party band, The Critics, who, during her tenure, opened shows for Eddie Money, The Turtles, and Three Dog Night. After nine-plus years with The Critics, Joanna then formed The Cat’s Pajamas, then J.A.K.K., and worked with The Cortini Brothers and other well-known groups. By now, Joanna is one-third of acoustic trio, The Mix Tapes, and also the lead singer of Funkadelphia. With the help of promoter Julie Briggs, and her band Funkadelphia as the house band, Joanna further organizes “Ladies Night,” an event that showcases some of Syracuse’s top female talent playing familiar hits. The event, which will be held at the Palace Theater on November 12, 2016, is sure to be a success. She took a little time with me to tell us more. Chuck Schiele: As one of the hardest working women in Syracuse music, how did it all start for you? How long have you been performing? Joanna Nix Jewett: I started when I was pretty young. I sang in chorus and school productions. I entered college as a Theater major. I started singing professionally during high school, singing at wedding ceremonies. In the early 90’s, I joined The Critics, a party/wedding band, and stayed for the next 9+ years. CS: Tell us about your music and the folks with whom you make your music.

JNJ: I love R&B and soul. Aretha, Chaka, Sade … I still can’t get enough of their music. Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours” is part of my musical DNA. Since I was a kid in the 70’s, Donna Summer was definitely an influence. Later on, in high school and college, I listened to The Police, Pat Benatar, Heart, CSN&Y, U2, Genesis, and REM. It’s not surprising, I guess, that the music we do in Joanna Nix is one-third of acoustic trio, The my two current groups Mix Tapes (Pictured above), and also the lead —The Mix Tapes, an singer of Funkadelphia. acoustic trio, and Funkadelphia, a soul/dance band— is largely what I grew up listening to, with some newer artists, like Amy Winehouse and Bruno Mars mixed in. I’ve also been producing small shows lately, featuring the music I grew up listening to. This month, “Crystal Visions” will showcase the music of Fleetwood Mac (no surprise there), and in October is the reprise of “Ruby Throated Sparrow,” which celebrates the gorgeous harmonies of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Both shows feature female voices —Donna Colton, Maureen Henesey, and I cover all the vocals, and although our voices are very different, the blend is sublime! continued on pg 4

Fall Beers to Fall For continued from pg 6
Whether or not this would enhance or take away from the beer’s tasting properties remains in the opinion of the drinker. My absolute favorite pumpkin beer is Empire’s Pumpkin Ale, made with local pumpkins from Cazenovia, which are roasted and lightly spiced with pumpkin pie spices. I highly recommend it. Oktoberfest beers (also known as Märzenbiers) are copper colored aromatic, toasty and full-bodied beers. These beers are typically made with amber malt that’s caramelized by gentle roasting. The word märzen, German for the month of March was chosen to describe this type of beer for the month in which it is brewed. Why then, would a spring-brewed ale be known as an Oktoberfest beer? During the Middle Ages, brewers had a rough time brewing beers during the summer months when air-born bacteria could infect the batches. To have enough beer on hand during the summer, they worked overtime in March to brew an extra strong and well-hopped beer that would keep for a long time. As the weather cooled down and it was safe to brew again, the märzen kegs needed emptying out to make room for the new brews. The Germans had no trouble finishing them in a timely manner, and so March beer turned into an October beer. Just as with pumpkin beers, there is a plethora of Oktoberfests. Not sure which ones to drink? For starters, try Saranac’s Octoberfest or Great Lakes’ Oktoberfest. Better yet, make your own six-pack at a retailer and grab six different ones. Breakfast beers are those that have been crafted for drinkability with your morning meal. Just as there aren’t restrictions on when to drink these, there aren’t any hard and fast rules as to what constitutes a breakfast beer. In general, hearty and smoky beers (e.g. stouts and rauchbiers) tend to be great choices to add different flavors that complement a stack of pancakes, eggs, bacon, etc. Flavors of coffee, maple, vanilla, and bacon are just a few that contribute to enhancing your breakfast or brunch. Founders Breakfast Stout, for instance is a great example. This Michigan brewery produces a stout packed with coffee,

chocolate and oats that is well loved by many craft beer drinkers. Can’t imagine having a beer with your breakfast at home? Try during a pre-game party, brunch, or on those nights where breakfast is your dinner. Breakfast beers are great alone too, of course; so don’t feel like you have to stuff your face to drink these. Very rich in flavor and full bodied, these are not your typical everyday beers – don’t chug! Enjoy the flavors that these and the aforementioned styles bring to your taste buds and savor in the moment. Cheers!

The Blair Witch Is Back When THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT was released in 1999, it became a bona-fide phenomenon. The first-person, handheld style of filmmaking executed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez was unlike anything that mainstream audiences had seen before. With a marketing campaign that gave the illusion that the film was actually comprised of found footage and that stars Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael C. Williams were still missing in the woods of Burkittsville, MD, it allowed the low-budget production to get under the skin of its terrified viewers, and provide them with a movie-going experience that was unique and memorable. In the years that have passed since the release of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, there have been countless horror films that have been influenced by the low-budget fright fest. Aside from its innovation, the found footage flick took an intriguing approach to scaring its viewer. This, of course, was the decision NOT to show the antagonist lurking somewhere just beyond the frame. This allowed the imaginations of audiences to run wild, forcing their mind to fill in the gaps. 16 years after the release of the initial PROJECT, BLAIR WITCH serves as the sequel that 2000’s abysmal BOOK OF SHADOWS should have been. man named James (James McCune) decides to take action. He believes that his sister Heather, who was one of the three subjects in the original BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, could still be alive somewhere, and a haunting image in the video only exacerbates this belief. He sets up a meeting with the person who initially found the tape, and plans on going into the woods to see if he can find his missing sister. His friend Lisa (Callie Hernandez) decides to document the search in order to fulfill an obligation for a documentary filmmaking class that she is taking. Their pals Ashley (Corbin Reid) and Peter (Brandon Scott) agree to come along and aid in the search. Upon meeting Lane (Wes Robinson) and his girlfriend Talia (Valorie Curry), who originally found the tape in question, the entire group journeys deep into the heart of the woods. BLAIR WITCH fills time in much of the same manner as its predecessor, showcasing snippets of their perilous journey through the brush, dense foliage, and streams. Initially, their trek is a lighthearted one, and when they find an open clearing, they set up camp for the evening. seen situations such as these play out before, and instead of teetering on the verge of spine-tingling terror, passivity sets in. Admittedly, even in its most uninspired moments, there are a couple “gotcha!” scares that land remarkably well. These were the type of moments that were largely lacking in the original, and offer a satisfactory payoff for those who came looking to have their nerves fried. The effectiveness of these scenes are certainly heightened if you are in a theater with superior surround sound, as it helps create the immersive atmosphere that is vital to the entertainment value of found-footage films such as this. While I was never bored during BLAIR WITCH, during the first two-thirds I was certainly less than Thanks to Everyone who Voted Us BEST PLACE FOR A FISH FRY! enamored. Having revisited THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT just a few months back, I didn’t really see anything that allowed the sequel to separate itself or deliver any signs of ingenuity. The cameras, including one on a drone and others built into ear pieces, added a modern twist, but other than that, it was noticeably devoid of originality. The per5 YEARS IN A ROW formers did their part to cry, scream, bellow, heave (2012–2016) and huff at all the right moments, and certainly seemed as if they were scared out of their minds the majority of the time. Despite my initial feelings, a funny thing happened when the end credits began to roll. I realized with sudden hilarity that I hadn’t moved a muscle during the final 30 minutes or so. From the Since 1948 moment that the dilapidated house featured in the climax of PROJECT was discovered, BLAIR WITCH finally became the terrifying journey I had hoped CELEBRATING it would be. Brandishing nightmarish imagery with 68 YEARS expert precision, the sequence hammered home OF SERVICE the horror in a way that the rest of the film did not. Three Generations & Counting! Due to this late flourish of fear, in the end, I happily walked away satisfied and slightly scared. Without Nick, there wouldn’t have been a “Nick & Angelo’s.” Kyle and I went to Nick & Angelo’s on a busy Saturday night; luckily we had made reservations and were quickly sat at a cozy booth. It’s Fall, Let’s Celebrate Fall has officially arrived here in the Finger Lakes. If there’s one thing we’re good at, it’s throwing a party. The wine industry loves to have a good reason to rock, join us as we celebrate harvest. October is jam packed with ridiculously awesome shindigs from lobster rolls to pumpkin chuckin. We’ll keep ya busy! My friends at Treleaven by King Ferry Winery start the month out with their Harvest Festival on the 8th and 9th from 10am to 5pm. They’ve got a full lineup of live music along with traditional grape stompings, craft beer, lawn games, and some of the best Chardonnay on the Trail. Fill your belly with scrumptious offerings from local food trucks. Then, if you’re feeling artsy, enter the pumpkin painting contest. BYOP and paint for free, or there is a $2 entry fee if you choose to pick a pumpkin at the event. Seating’s first-come, first-serve, but you may bring your own blankets and chairs. That same weekend, on Sunday the 9th, Toro Run hosts its Second Annual Leaf Peepers Seafood Festival from noon to 5pm. The menu consists of Crab Mac & Cheese, Raw Oysters, Conch or Clam Chowder, Shrimp Burgers, Lobster Rolls, Seafood Paella, and Peel & Eat Shrimp. Not a seafood fan? They’ll also have their famous Brazilian BBQ featuring locally made Riesling Hot Dogs and Chardonnay Kielbasa from Schrader Farms Meat Market, salt potatoes, hamburgers and some of the best chicken barbeque I have ever

How The Scots Invented the Modern World The True Story of How Western Europe’s Poorest Nation Created Our World and Everything In It. by Arthur Herman Confession: I’m still not finished with this book. It’s dense, and you can only absorb just so much at one sitting. Second confession: No, of course the Scots didn’t invent the world and everything in it —that’s a process and process builds one block upon another. But having said that, the author makes a good case that the world, as we know it, owes much (for better and worse) to a wee nation of granite and heather up at the northern corner of a small island nation called Great Britain. ment, and how this awakening of spirit, spiritual fervor, and fierce independence spread to a New World and the ideas that carried the settlers created the United States, which then went on to influence much of the modern world. It all began —more or less— with the Scottish Reformation. John Knox, father of the Calvinist Presbyterian movement in Scotland, taught that God gave to men — to individuals— the power to administer and enforce His laws —not a monarchy. To administer the laws, one had to know and understand these laws. The author makes a good case that the To know and underworld, as we know it, owes much (for better stand them required and worse) to a wee nation of granite and that one be able to heather up at the northern corner of a small read scripture. island nation called Great Britain. And to read, one had to learn to read. That all added up to the first “public” schools - really, parish schools. Once each parish had a school, literacy grew at a startling rate, as did the demand for books, and with the demand for books, the need for writers. Herman writes that it was, oddly enough, the defeat of the Scots and the absorption of them into the British Empire that was, at least in part, the reason they could become so influential on thought and ideas: after 1707, and more profoundly, after “The ‘45,” (Scotland’s final rebellion in which they, particularly the Highlanders, were defeated on the moors of Culloden), Scotland had many of the benefits of a strong, rich empire, and few of the problems. Scotland wasn’t interesting enough to The Crown to be paid much attention to. So Scotland could trade throughout the British empire, paid relatively little in the way of taxes, and its

Having once been fully absorbed into Great Britain, Herman calls the next phase of the Scottish story “The Diaspora.” That is, Scots traveled to all corners of the British empire, in particular, the American Colonies. While many Scots were on “the wrong side” of the Revolutionary War (they sided with the “bloody Brits”), those who did side with the Colonists had outsized influence on the Declaration of Independence and eventually, on The Constitution. Word on the Street by BILL MCCLELLAN
TRUMP: A Pied Piper Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei are on the scene. The last thing the world needs is an uninformed, recklessly impulsive American President. There are sound Patriotic reasons why to vote for Hillary Clinton, and Colleen Deacon for Congress. I have often wished there were a list of what Donald Trump has said in one place so that voters could get a fair taste of his character. You may remember Keith Olbermann from his MSNBC program a few years back. In the debut episode of his new “GQ” series, “The Closer”, Olbermann tallies the most outrageous of Donald Trump’s offenses. It is my hope to provide you with truth and good sense as best as I am able. I removed many of Olbermann’s offerings that I thought to be zealotry and added many of my own. Few are more disappointed in our Government than I. American concepts have not been pursued in my lifetime. (which began in 1946) The American system has morphed into a system of rampant greed and manipulation by smart people serving themselves. 1% has half of the wealth. Their absurd wealth forced neglect of our people and neglect of our infrastructure. Once revered for our pursuit of human fairness, today 10’s of millions of us are impoverished puppets of greed. We elect them. They step into the parade fat and happy and complicit as the country withers into the 3rd world. Our Campaign Finance System has bought our leaders hearts and our country’s intent and all the devolving that followed. I completely understand the Trump phenomena. The problem is his hope is false, he is a Pied Piper. And it really is the lives of your kids that will pay. Trump’s traits of unfairness, irrational sensitivity, an abnormal need for revenge, poor judgement, and a clear propensity for unnecessary dispassion are simply true. He fails every measure for leading people. In his own business, harming others has been heartless. Trump and our Mayor Stephanie Miner —(Miner has the heartless character flaws of Leona Helmsley)— are masters of deceit that have found their way CATERING & BUSINESS DELIVERY into the big picture. ingenious at rewarding obsequious followers that offer a veneer of credibility. This has nothing to do with ideology or party. It is the dispassionate darkness in their hearts that give way to judgments that cause such grave danger to us all. This mix of dispassion and an ingenious ability to deceive is a recipe for grave human harm. Trump has little geographic, or historic, or present international informed baseline. There are wars and leaders and countries and vital histories he knows nothing about. As President his pursuits would have little depth. Posterity would not be his concern. He is not strong and smart as many perceive. He is impulsive and reckless and easily manipulated by staff and our enemies. (It will be his finger on the button, not Kellyanne Conway’s.) He has a need to respond to any attack. He warms to evil when it compliments him. Our enemies will play him like a fiddle as Putin has done. His major policy course is what has held us down for decades. That is the rich mans creed of deceit that does not work. He wants Tax cuts for the rich and trickledown economics. A theory that has proven to be trickle “up”. That is why 1% own half our wealth. A theory that brought us to the George Bush recession and the very brink of financial failure and depression. It took Clinton and Obama to bring us back from the grave financial failures of both Bush 1 and 2. The minimum wage already is an enslaving poverty wage. Trump wants to reduce the minimum wage and have massive labor at a literal slave wage. Fast food, retail workers etc. are already treading water and on food stamps. They have no dream. Herewith in one place Mr. Olbermann’s and my reasons why to vote for Hillary Clinton and for Colleen Deacon for Congress, to assist Hillary in this Historic time: (You may google any matter you question as you take in the following) Herewith some thinking of this False Prophet: Donald Trump has attacked Hillary as someone the 2nd Amendment people might want to do something about leaving the innuendo of assassination for every nut job on earth to consider; He did this again suggesting the “Secret Service disarm and see what happens to her”; He insulted and physically imitated and mocked a reporter with a life shattering handicap; He attacked a tortured war hero John McCain because he was shot down on his 23rd combat bombing mission deep in enemy territory; he called the Pope disgraceful; He insulted the Mother of a dead soldier who gave his life for us, while at the same time contrasting her with “Radical Islamic Terrorism”; He failed to protect or even pay countless contractors he hired in good faith on his projects showing no regard for large numbers of Americans or the life that stands alone; He called Rosie O’Donnell a Fat ass ugly pig; he has attacked Hillary as a bigot, brainwashed, unhinged, a monster and as the devil; he depicted her in a tweet with her photo, the Star of David and hundred dollars bills as the Most Corrupt Candidate ever suggesting Jews are corrupt; He attacked Hillary as someone whose religion “we don’t know anything about” —after he explained he had never asked God for forgiveness; He implied the President was a traitor; as being complicit in the Orlando terrorist attack; He attacked the President of the United States for having lower approval ratings than Vladimir Putin who governs his country under the threat continued on pg 20

Trump who brags about his primary consultant being himself, would be free to launch a civilization-ending nuclear war on his own any time he chose. What he would do to the Supreme Court would be a disaster for gay rights and women’s rights and “Campaign Finance” which alone has set the downward spiral of our great land. This Campaign Finance system fostered this environment where around half of America is considering voting for Donald Trump. This is because the only other place America can go for answers is the 535 and that same “system” that bought their souls. And They’re Off! Maybe it’s just me but I think you should practice what you preach. Can you really take advice on weight loss from a doctor who could lose 50? Has the professional that is recommending a colonoscopy had one themselves? Hey, I know I’m no stud muffin but I make an effort to keep my weight in check and work out regularly and aggressively. The aches and pains you take Tylenol or Aleve for are my regular companions and a reminder of the workout. I feel guilty if I don’t have an ache or pain because it means I haven’t pushed myself in a while. Although I have my regular exercise routines I think it’s also important to mix it up a little and one nice way is to do some event. There are 101 charity events with some run / walk seemingly and probably literally every weekend. You get out of the house, you test yourself a little whether you run or walk, you have new experiences, meet people you know and make new acquaintances. What’s not to like? Plus it’s usually for a good cause and not usually expensive. Winner Winner chicken dinner. Earlier this year I did a charity run for Hope for Bereaved … you know I love that organization. I hadn’t run again until an event came up last weekend to which I made a donation and promised to do the run … I don’t run much anymore but these folks do my compounding when I want to use topical meds and I think they are nice people and it was in support of 9/11 with Todd’s Fund. Etc … So there I was cruising down a country road en route to a 5k run at Vernak Farms Store somewhere nears Skaneateles … I don’t know how long the run is or what the course is like but it’s a beautiful day and by using the Chi-Running technique I can usually power through most races. Not winning any awards but plugging away … never stopping … getting ‘er done. No matter how long or short the race I will look near death at the end. I see continued on pg 24

My Mind To Yours

Tough Crowd 2016 The 2016 presidential campaign is the scariest campaign I’ve observed since I first voted. Many good people who wax nostalgic about the prosperous happy days that followed WWII seem to blame Democrats both for gun violence and the lack of legal economic opportunity that might fuel street gangs, just as the Confederates blamed the Yankees for interfering in the south’s profitable and genteel slavery based economy. Earlier this year, extreme-right politicos on social media pointed to the fact that Emancipation Proclamation President Abraham Lincoln was a Republican to suggest that Socialist Bernie Sanders was

The implications of the post-Reconstruction Democratic southern voting bloc’s blocking the GOP for decades then shifting Republican after Democratic President Lyndon Baines Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 goes unmentioned. History and neuroscience suggest that old grudges motivate people more quickly than calm consideration of fine details. It’s easy to play on fear. Ethnic, regional, and cultural differences including educational disparities within our borders fuel most misunderstanding; misunderstanding breeds antagonism. People expect and want the familiar and, right or wrong, we make things familiar by labeling them. We confuse economic with governmental systems arguing somehow that socialists are totalitarian and capitalists value freedom above all else when clearly that is not the case. level of discourse. The business of our nation involves more than business. We are not actors on reality TV. A communication expert speaking on NPR recently commented that in this election, primal gender stereotypes loom large. Research shows people view aggressive men as powerful and effective while they view aggressive women as angry and malevolent. People view both reserved men and women as ineffective. A booming male voice promising greatness taps into archetypal hero worship in many of us. A woman’s booming voice doesn’t resonate the same way. Our primal amygdalae respond to sight and sound and if not overridden by our analytical pre-frontal cortexes, we might miss what a candidate is saying because of how the candidate sounds. It’s scary when powerful people threaten you. Historically, labeling and name-calling always precede oppression and violence and some Americans feel threatened now. It’s unfortunate that so many people choose to insulate themselves from face-to-face political discussions by communicating their thoughts on social media where their online settings reinforce their own views. Now what goes through my mind first is that this is a nice affirmation that even a little group has the attention of God. Then, on pondering a little further it occurs to me that this implies that you need at least 2 people to get things going. So does that mean if I were to pray alone at night, which many people do, that I don’t have God’s ear? In Loving Memory by PETER ZANGARI III
Thomas Mafrici Thomas Mafrici came to the United State as a toddler, and resided in Seneca Falls, NY with his mother and father, brother, Bennie, and sister, Pauline. They moved to the North Side of Syracuse, where there was a large Italian population. As a graduate of North High, he was honored to be on the Wall of Fame, housed at McChesney Park with notable friends, such as Armond Magnarelli, Dominick De Regis, Tex Simone, Dr. John Merola, Bob Primo, Joe Bucci, Vic Ianno, Sr., Tony Nesci, Sr., Joe Farone, Sr., and Vincent Stagnitta. In 1956 he married his lifelong partner, Natalie Zangari. They soon opened their first Fish Stand/Market on Grant Blvd. in 1958. Always hungry for knowledge, Tommy observed his older friends in various businesses, with the emphasis on the hospitality industry. The group included his brotherTom Mafrici, owner of Tom’s Clam Cove sorts through fresh lobsters in-laws, Nick & Pete Zangari, Jr. (Zangari’s Liquor Store/Sweetheart Market) which have just arrived. Computers & the Web by NANCY ROBERTS
A Blonde and Her Browser The computer and I go back a long way, as you know. Like most computer users of long-standing, I have a love-hate relationship with them, and have watched them evolve, morphing into bigger, smaller, bigger again, and now pocket-sized monsters that consume huge portions of our days and manage most of our lives. One tool “The Beast” uses is, of course, the “browser.” Given that this is the name we use for animals that eat vegetation at a steady pace, moving along like a mowing machine, it’s an apt name for the code that allows us to “visit” “websites,” and now organizes and commands many other operations we perform every day: organizing and storing documents, shopping, reading, learning, sharing imagery and ideas, making plans and communicating. Browsers allows us to “visit” “websites,” and perform every day operations such as organizing and storing documents, shopping, reading, learning, sharing imagery and ideas, making plans and communicating.
—finally realizing that the Internet was a real thing that was going to stay in use— launched the Internet Explorer, and, with its ability to bundle the browser with the OS got the upper hand. Back came Netscape under its Mozilla Foundation incarnation and soon Firefox (Mozilla’s Big Product), IE, and Safari (a Mac browser) were the Three Left Standing. I became enamored of Firefox: light, swift, responsive, Firefox did just what you wanted it to do. It had a bit of a hiccup at one point with a memory leak (it grabbed memory and did not release it, eventually bringing your computer to a halt. But, that was eventually dealt with and life went along. Then the Great Google launched its browser: Chrome. (Chrome, by the way, is the pretty glitz that programmers add to the interface on any user interface to make it look nice and act responsively). I tried Chrome, but wasn’t sufficiently impressed to give up my Firefox. Recently, however, I’ve had a change of heart. Or perhaps, better put, a change of speed. Firefox has once again been misbehaving, and eating up precious memory to the point where eventually my system would become unresponsive. Now, I have to wonder whether The Great Google (which now owns Blogger, YouTube, Chrome, Google, Google Drive … ) has a hand in the latest and lowest of the Firefox slowdowns? Colors of The Season Injecting color into my wardrobe isn’t something I usually do. You can pretty much count on me showing up anywhere in black, white, or gray. Blue jeans are really as far as I’ll go. But for some Fall has got me craving all kinds of color. I never thought I’d say it, but yellow has been calling my name this season. I’m so pale that I’ve always believed I could never wear any variation of the shade. And to some extent that’s true. It makes me look totally washed out. But the darker tones of mustard yellow warm everything up. For just a touch, I love it for a manicure or a mod mini skirt with a black turtleneck.

Unbreakable At first glance, Michelle Rapp looks just like you and I. She talks just like you and I, she has a job just like you and I, she goes about her day just like you and I. However, when you take a closer look, you can tell that there’s something different about her. If there’s something wrong with us, we can go to the doctor or a specialist, have tests done and get some kind of an explanation as to why we are feeling the way we do. That diagnosis (whether it be good or bad) of our symptoms usually gives us some kind of peace of mind. Michelle can’t get that explanation. She was born with a neurological disorder and though she has been through extensive testing, still has no diagnosis. Michelle says, “The most sense I can make of it is that my Mom had a stressful pregnancy and delivery. That stress may have hindered my development in utero.” Believe it or not, Michelle is happy that she doesn’t have a diagnosis. There are no labels holding her back. Regardless of the symptoms she has and how bad they may be, she chooses to carry on with her life. Michelle’s equilibrium has always been a presenting issue. She has no good memories of gym class that she can recall and she never really ran

correctly (which made her self-conscious). From time to time Michelle falls and even on occasion gets hurt, but she always gets back up and continues on. You see, Michelle is legally blind. This can be misinterpreted or confusing to people. She does have vision, she can see you and I, but it’s just not that great. She started losing her sight in her early twenties when her optic nerve began to deteriorate. In hind sight it affected her more academically than anyone really ever knew. It got to a point where it was bad enough to create a lot of inconveniences in her life. Unfortunately, the day came where she was no longer able to

drive. Losing her independence wasn’t an easy pill to swallow. Over ten years ago, Michelle decided to attend massage school. Looking back on everything she feels that it put her on a path that brought her many blessings, including maintaining her health and well-being. In her thirties Michelle decided to have extensive tests done to see if she could find a diagnosis. More importantly, she wanted to know if there would be a genetic link for her future children. Michelle wanted a child with all of her heart and soul. With still no diagnosis, there was some good news. She was told that there was a less than one percent chance that her children would have the same symptoms. At age thirty seven, Michelle met and married her forever love Dan Rapp. Michelle says, “Thank God.” Dan is a practicing registered nurse in the emergency department at Oneida Health Care and has been the rainbow at the end of her storm. When her symptoms have been at their worst, he’s always been there. For years it had been her mother (who was her rock and the center of her world) who was there by her side to always help. Unfortunately, she passed away on December 18, 2012. Losing her mother, trying to conceive and working overnights for fifteen years doing direct care for a house with dually diagnosed disabled people was just too much for Michelle to handle. After many nights of going without the sleep her body needed, she knew something had to change. So, Michelle drastically cut her hours at work and began to focus on herself. Well, she found health and happiness beyond what she could have ever imagined! She met Natalia Daughton from Bare Bones Health & Wellness. She helped her and educated her starting on a cellular level. Michelle started a nutrition, supplement, and detox regiment. She worked on her emotional health and began to re-build her energy and strength. Finally after eighteen months, she was ready for the gym! Michelle and Dan joined Champions Fitness Center in Cicero on May 21, 2016 and

On a cloudy Friday afternoon, I drove out to Brewerton to see a restaurant. I expected some sort of dusty looking saloon like they have in the western movies. But that’s not what I got —especially when I walked inside. The Wild Horse Bar & Grill, owned by Shane Miller and his brother Bill, opened May 5th of this year. Outside, it looks like a little bar with a rearing steed and all. Its red exterior is accented with wagon wheels and flowers —nothing spectacular to look at (except Teddy and we’ll get to him later). The Wild Horse Bar & Grill, owned WOW!!! Once inside, you see a by Shane Miller and his brother Bill bench made entirely out of tree (Above). roots. While it has a rustic edge to it, it’s truly a piece of art. The winding roots and planks turned into a shining settee original in way. Then you walk onto a spotlessly clean tile floor and are mesmerized by Oneida Lake in the background. The walls are covered in highly polished knotty pine. At the back of the facility is a large wrap around bar with two lovely and friendly ladies greeting you with a smile. They immediately fetched Bill for our interview. The minute Bill started to speak, you knew that for Shane and Bill, this continued on pg 36

I asked Bill why the country theme? He replied, “There are tons of bars on Oneida Lake and in Syracuse, but none of them are completely dedicated to country music. Sure, there are cross over artists, but we wanted to focus on one genre and offer people something different.” This is certainly different but in the best possible way. The picturesque view is complimented by a dock where anyone can stop for a bite to eat or a quick drink. If that’s not enough to relax you, then try sitting by the fire pit. As if that’s not enough entertainment, there are dedicated rooms for pool and darts. And if you think this is just a nightclub, you’re dead wrong partner. Families can also take advantage of the delicious menu until the night crowd comes in. “What do you think is your greatest success to date?” “Well, I think it’s our involvement with our community. The Beatles: Eight Days A Week The Touring Years With the plethora of streaming services now available, the landscape of home entertainment has never been better. Services such as Netfix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu are in constant competition, striving to deliver original series, films, and documentaries that they hope will help them prevail over their rivals. As a result, there are countless productions that may have never seen the light of day just a few years ago that now have an opportunity to find an audience. In addition, films are now reaching the home viewer faster than ever, occasionally forgoing a theatrical run alto-
Given their place in history, and what their journey meant to the world, there is no denying that there will never be another band quite like The Beatles.

gether. In other cases, movies are simultaneously released theatrically and digitally. This unique strategy allows the viewer to choose which platform they would prefer to utilize. On September 16, Ron Howard’s documentary THE BEATLES: EIGHT DAYS A WEEK opened in theaters and then debuted on Hulu the very next day. Showcasing neverbefore-seen and remastered footage, Howard’s jubilant, introspective, and highly entertaining doc takes a look at life on the road for The Beatles between 1962-1966. From tiny pubs in London to the sprawling The Beatles: Eight Days a Week: A enormity of their concert at Shea stadium, EIGHT DAYS A WEEK provides a glimpse into the madness and hysteria that followed the group wherever they went. Featuring current interviews with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, as well as archived statements made by John Lennon and George Harrison, the four lads from Liverpool described what it was like to be the most cherished people on the planet. By now, there have been innumerable intriguing stories about the band that have already been told. If you are looking for an exploration into the more seedy and controversial aspects of their union and eventual dissolution, you are certainly not going to find it here. money spent here that day went directly to the SPCA —we kept nothing. It was a huge success and we look forward to doing it again next year.” Now that I’ve brought up the SPCA, I can tell you about Teddy. Teddy is a black and white spotted pit bull. The minute you look into those chocolate eyes, you’ll fall in love! Teddy plays out in front of the building and is fenced in —not because he’s not friendly, but he likes to run. The previous owners abandoned Teddy and he ran into the road and was struck by a car. The boy’s uncle felt so bad for him that he picked him up and took him to the vet. They fixed Teddy up, but he had no place to go. So the uncle decided that he belonged at the Wild Horse. I put my hand down to pet Teddy and he stood up on the fence and gave be a big kiss! You’re probably wondering why I brought this into the article, but it’s very important information. You see this is the way the Miller boys manage the Wild Horse as well. Everybody is treated like family and this is not a concept found very often. Even better, they treat the staff the same way —they give them a sense of pride in a job well done. Perhaps that’s why they’ve become such a huge success in such a short time. There are food and drink specials every single day. Talk about catering to your customers! For example: Wednesdays are little neck clam night —you get a dozen clams for only $5 clams, and $2 Coors cans. Friday is Ladies Night! Nuf said!
“There are tons of bars on Oneida Lake and in Syracuse, but none of them are completely dedicated to country music. Sure, there are cross over artists, but we wanted to focus on one genre and offer people something different.”
The Wild Horse hosted the SPCA Poker Run this year. All money spent here that day went directly to the SPCA —they kept nothing. It was a huge success and they look forward to doing it again next year.
I’m not going to list all the specials because you should really take the 20 minute ride to the Wild Horse and see for yourself. If you go on band nights, go early because there is usually about 70-100 people, and 200 for bigger bands. And don’t miss the Halloween party on October 22nd from 8:00PM to close. There will be cash prizes for best costumes in each category. There will also be a DJ to get you moving along with drink specials. This is no ghost town folks, it’s the real deal. What’s next? Bill said, “I’d like to start line dancing, maybe have an instructor or leader. We want to get people moving. It’s all about having fun!” I couldn’t agree more, and it looks like he rounded up a lot of fun. So if you got some dust in the throat pilgrim, get your posse and mosey on over to the Wild Horse Bar & Grill. I’ll see you there!

ing albums between ’62-66. These offer a few memorable quips about how musically advanced the band became, and showcase how driven the band was to continuously evolve. Much of this had been previously explored in ABC’s BEATLES ANTHOLOGY in 1995, but it is still enthralling to see and hear some of the most legendary music of all time being pieced together bit by bit. Though all of the footage is massively entertaining, there was certainly something special about watching the band performing live. With smiles plastered upon their faces, they belted out their catchy tunes with joy and vigor. While the audience members were melting into screaming puddles of fandom, the Beatles emphatically churned out one hit song after another. Though the band wasn’t exactly an overnight sensation, they were clearly surprised at how suddenly their meteoric rise to stardom happened. After conquering England, they jettisoned off to America, On September 16, Ron Howard’s documentary THE BEATLES: EIGHT DAYS A WEEK, THE TOURING and after their legendary appearance on the ED YEARS opened in theaters and then debuted on Hulu the very next day. My wife summed up Howard’s incredible documentary with one perfect observation. She has a new found confidence and strength beyond what she ever could have imagined. Is she really surprised? Not really, because she’s always been a fighter. Check out the picture of her standing on her dock! She was afraid to walk out on her new dock for the longest time because she had a fear of falling. Here she is STANDING OUT ON IT ALL BY HERSELF.

In Conclusion:
Michelle says that her husband Dan has been a vital component of her health and well-being. He is without a doubt her hero and her Champion. He has reassured her when she has most needed it and always reminds her to stay focused on what is most important. What advice does Michelle have for you? Michelle says, “If you see someone who seems “a little different” you shouldn’t be too quick to assume you know what’s going on with them. If you’re someone who might be facing a disability or other adversity try not to be too discouraged or afraid. Sure, it’s not easy, but you never know what new roads this experience might take you down. Try to face the adversity with your head held high and eyes wide open.” She hopes her story will inspire someone. If it can make a difference in just one person’s life then it was worth sharing. She says that this is no tragedy, this is her being triumphant! She is grateful for every blessing and bump in the road. “There is no greater disability in society, than the inability to see a person as more.” Robert M.
