Sounds Of Syracuse

by CHUCK SCHIELE

The Bold Entrance of Aaron Ruiz There I was on a no-particular Tuesday, taking in the music at the Liverpool Limp Lizard Open Jam. The house band —to whom I refer as the Tuesday Night Lizards— was kicking ass as usual. … and friends were sitting in, kicking ass as usual. Unexpected things happen in great ways in this room. And wouldn’t you know it, while sipping a special tequila (that the house gets just for me -heh), I notice somebody new taking the stage. College dude. Tall. He appeared to be very shy, kind of looking downward in that shyness. Not at all nervous, just shy. Modest as a person. Hmmm … I always get interested when somebody takes the stage in this way ever since I saw a 10-year old kid beat the living daylights out of Gospel tune At the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival several years ago. The house band on the other hand appeared to be rather excited. With a quick discussion among the players, some positive head-nodding and a four-count, they opened the tune. Then Aaron Ruiz opened his mouth and introduced us all to the next signable act that Syracuse has to offer. Yep. This is what went through my mind as he sang line one. I thought the exact same thing when I first saw Jason Mraz at Twiggs Coffee & Tea in San Diego. “This guy’s outta here. What is he doing here?” All conversations in the room immediately stopped as all heads turned to see where this voice was coming from. By line two all of us were fans. I turned to my lady, and said, “Holy cow, this guy gets it. If he keeps his head on straight, he’s outta here,” as he effortlessly sailed through the upper rafters of a Stevie Wonder tune (written and recorded well before Aaron’s time, I might add … ).

Syracuse’s next signable act: Aaron Ruiz Then he sang Freddie Mercury. He sang “Summertime.” What the … So vast, yet, It’s all effortlessly within range for Aaron. But, that’s just a Tuesday for him. Aside from messing around on Tuesdays introducing himself to music scene, he attends OCC as a music and voice major. Determined to be working in the “biz,” he reaches out to a variety of outlets to play from theater productions at school, to open jams around the area, to playing with a few groups he is well on track to enjoy a career in music. At the end of his short set, we made friends and eventually it became his turn to be featured here. Please let me introduce to you, Aaron Ruiz. Chuck Schiele: Hi Aaron. Welcome to your first of probably many articles. Aaron Ruiz: Thank you, Chuck.

From choirs to musicals to Jazz Jam at Funk ‘n Waffles, Aaron is making his way through the music scene on his way up.

CS: How long have you been playing music? When did you know you had the gift of music in you? AR: I’ve been singing since I can remember. My Mom tells me about how I would sing songs in the grocery store. I think it was when I got into choir in elementary school and the Syracuse Children’s Chorus that I realized I might have something special. CS: Your primary instrument is voice. Do you play any other instruments? AR: I play a little bit of piano. I took lessons when I was younger; and took piano at OCC. I also sing and play bass drum with the Unity Street Band, (as well as helping with arrangements) and did auxiliary percussion and cymbals for Lafayette Community Band; and was in the pit for Tully Arts Council’s production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. CS: Currently, I understand you are in college. What’s your major? What do you study? AR: I’m a music performance major studying voice at OCC. Right now it’s pretty focused on classical, but I’m hoping I can transfer to a school like SUNY Purchase, where I can major in jazz studies. CS: Excellent. What has your music experience, been like, so far? AR: I’ve sung in school choirs from elementary school all the way through college. I sang with the Syracuse Children’s Chorus in elementary school, and sang in all-city, all-county and all-state choir, as well as all-county vocal jazz while in high school. I’ve done several school plays and musicals at Nottingham, (Chicago, You Can’t Take It with You, Rent) and with the rest of the district over the summer (How to Succeed, In the Heights). I also did a few shows with the Red House including Hairspray and Music Man. I’ve gotten to sing with William Gorman, Nick Fields, Joe Cortini, Drew Serafini, and Melissa Gardiner’s MG3. I very recently got to sing with Drew at the Palace Theatre. Currently you can usually find me singing at the Jazz Jam at Funk ‘n Waffles 3-5pm on Sundays or open mic at Limp Lizard 7:30-10:30pm. I also have a gig coming up in January at Green Gate Inn with Julie Howard (date TBA), and there’s a band that’s considering making me a permanent member. CS: Very good. And, I’m not surprised. I see you at the open jams. You walked into a pack of A-List musicians screwing around on their night off —and you jumped right in about as naturally as anyone ever could to an immediate welcome. What do you think about all that? AR: It’s pretty humbling when you think about it. But, it helps me reaffirm that this is what I continued on pg 4

should be doing. CS: I enthusiastically concur. AR: Sometimes I doubt whether or not I’m really cut out for this, but seeing everyone’s reactions helps me believe in myself just a little bit more. CS: Dude, my hundred-buck-bet is that you go all the way, if you want it, and do the things it takes. What do you want to do in life? AR: Singing on stage is what I want to do. I’d love to sing for big crowds and to see them enjoy my music. CS: Then believe. What kind of music resonates with you most? AR: I listen to a lot of different genres, jazz, rock, r&b, pop, salsa, but for it to really resonate with me, it has to have some soul. I need to be able feel the music and the emotion behind it. The joy, the pain, the anger, the comedy, all these feelings need to come through in the performance. If there’s anything I hope to bring to my music, it’s my soul. CS: Please tell us about a highlight or to from your music path. AR: One of my favorite moments was getting to sing at the Palace Theater. It’s not every day that I get to sing in a big setting like that. It was also great to sing alongside some of CNY’s top young musicians, and to already know most of them personally. CS: What has been the best lesson you’ve learned, so far? AR: With every performance, you have to tell a story. There was a time when I was trying to learn a new song every Sunday for jazz jam, and there were times where I was so worried about learning the notes and lyrics, and figuring out how I was going to play with the melody the second time through, that I wasn’t dedicating enough time to acting the song out, and making sure that every line meant something. I was just singing the song without putting much thought behind how I was singing the song, and that just made those songs fall flat. I think that’s one of the worst mistakes you can make as an artist, to forget to communicate with your audience. CS: That fact that you understand this already makes me raise my bet to $200. What sort of plans do you have for yourself and your music? AR: Right now, I want to continue my education, and continue going to open mics and jazz jams so I can keep making connections and possibly get more gigs. I’m currently debating if I want to transfer to a 4 year school, or stick with the music scene here. CS: Do you have favorite musicians? AR: Some of my favorites include Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Torme, Adele, Ray Charles, Queen, Sara Bareilles, Pentatonix, Celia Cruz, and many more. CS: Do you have a website or a way to keep track of your music activity? AR: Currently you can follow me on my personal Facebook page. I’ll always post if I have a special gig coming up, and there are videos of me singing if you want to check it out. I’m also working on a separate Facebook page just for music updates, so keep an eye out for it. CS: Thank you, Aaron for taking some time for us here at Table Hopping. Nice talking with you. AR: Thank you, Chuck. It’s been a pleasure. See you around.

Mississippi Grind The beauty of streaming services like Netflix is the ability to randomly stumble across a production that can take you totally by surprise. This happened to me just a couple of weeks ago when I was perusing the movie selections and came across the title MISSISSIPPI GRIND. The drama had been on my radar since its initial release in 2015, mainly due to its two leading men. Ryan Reynolds had yet to emerge as the full-blown superstar that would come with the release of DEADPOOL, but had showed an impressive range that fueled comedies like VAN WILDER and WAITING, but also dazzled in the (still) underrated horror/thriller BURIED. Conversely, Ben Mendelsohn had just continued on pg 6

Mississippi Grind continued from pg 5 delivered one of the great performances of the year on the small screen in the electric Netflix series BLOODLINE. Mendelsohn plays Gerry, a down-in-the-dumps degenerate gambler who looks as if he is miles away from anything resembling a winning streak. Sitting at a table in a small stakes poker tournament, he crosses paths with the charming and charismatic Curtis. They strike up a cordial rapport at the table, and this carries over to their next meeting in a bar after the event. Gerry did well in the tourney, netting $900, which he then promptly bet on a basketball game. Curtis, meanwhile, is looking to make a few bucks tossing darts. Over the course a few drinks, a friendship begins to blossom, and the gamblers start to see a lot of themselves in one another. Within the course of one his many (many, many) elaborate tales, Curtis admits that he is heading across the country, and will eventually end up near a high-stakes poker game hosted by one of his acquaintances. Convinced that his destiny had finally been discovered, Gerry pilfers some petty cash from his employer, leaves his job of a real estate agent behind him, and convinces Curtis that the two should be travelling companions. From the opening moments of co-writers and co-direcRyan Reynolds as Curtis, and Mendelsohn as Gerry, a degenerate gambler looking for the next tors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s engaging drama, Gerry’s fix around every corner. motivations are clear. Constantly chasing the next big payoff, he never knows when to stop, or how to view a victory for what it is. Behind Mendelsohn’s melancholy eyes, the viewer knows that even if the cards fall his way, it’s unlikely that he’ll ever achieve any level of joy. His relationship with Curtis appears to be the one bright spot in an otherwise dreary existence, and even that is shrouded in mystery. Every Woman’s Desire: Transforming And Empowering Through Style A woman wants to feel beautiful, confident, at the beginning and end of every day. She wants to hold her head up high and love the reflection she sees in the mirror without spending thousands of dollars on plastic surgery to achieve it. This informative guide will serve as a path for you to achieve it.

What is Style?........................................................................... What we call “style” is really everyone who make a series of very personal choices every day. The litany of questions everyone asks herself goes something like this. What do I want to wear today? What do I want to look like? How does this outfit make me feel? What message does this outfit convey to people who work with me or meet me for the first time? Does this look good on me? Do I like this color? What accessories should I wear to round out my outfit? What goes with these pants/this shirt/my blue suit/my favorite black purse/the strappy sandals…? Are these clothes appropriate for the weather/my meetings today/my interview/working in the yard/meeting my son’s teacher at Not Your Average Antique Store! school…?

The world of personal style comprises all these questions and more. It touches the heart of everyone’s internal dialog, as they get dressed daily. It gets to the heart of self-image, self-worth, self-esteem, self-empowerment, and the individual’s sense of style. Personal style is intertwined with our personalities, our sense of individuality, sometimes our sense of conformity or rebellion, and most definitely our sense of role and status in the world. Style is ultimately important because it impacts our everyday experience. It’s what we look like when we put on clothes each morning and look in the mirror. It’s how we feel about ourselves, and it strongly influences how we feel about others. It creates first … and lasting … impressions, for good or bad. Personal style is wearing “my own brand.” It’s one of the ultimate forms of self-expression. Further, fashion is not just limited to consolidate the concept of wearing the latest and hottest brands etc. Fashion stands for a culture in which your personality and identity are communicated and shown to the world. You may be asking “how do I create by own brand? Well, you must know who you are to create your own brand. So, who are you? Remember personal style is intertwined with our personalities, our sense of individuality, sometimes our sense of conformity or rebellion, and most

MISSISSIPPI GRIND boasts very little WRITERS: Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck action, yet I found it totally engrossing. Relying completely on the chemistry between its stars, it allows the two performers to feed and play off one another with conviction and ease. We have seen countless depictions of the horrors of addiction over the years, with many of these focusing on the toll that drugs and alcohol can take upon individuals, their families and their friends. Rarely, however, do we see a portrayal such as Mendelsohn’s, whose affliction isn’t based on the need to consume a substance. Whether he is winning or losing is inconsequential, the only thing that matters is the next bet. Perhaps no scene captures the depravity and sorrow that fuels an addict than the moment Gerry visits his ex-wife under the guise of visiting his young daughter. Gut-wrenching in its simplistic sorrowfulness, it encapsulates the depths of depravity to which Gerry, and others like him, will sink order to find their next fix. Brew Time by GLORIA AVILES-RAKOWSKY

Fall Beers to Fall For As the ‘-ber’ months settle into Central New York, a hot bowl of soup or mulled cider go hand in hand with the cooler temperatures and changing leaves. This is also the time where we enjoy foods and desserts made with a variety of spices and seasonings specific to the fall. Pumpkin spiced, Oktoberfests (or Märzen beers) and breakfast beers come to the forefront during these cooler months as well. We see pumpkin beers as early as July, but these beers are best enjoyed during that time when we know summer isn’t coming back. Pumpkin beers are made seasonally and with spices familiar to those that we enjoy this time of the year. Beers made with cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and other ingredients also present in pumpkin pies are very common. Go to any beer store or supermarket with a good selection of craft beer and you’ll notice the orange six-packs and pumpkin beer galore. Shipyard’s Pumpkinhead Ale, for instance, (known as “The Original Pumpkin Pumpkin spiced, Oktoberfests (or Märzen beers) and breakfast beers Beer”) is one that the brewery suggests to consume with a cinnamon and sugar rimmed come to the forefront during these cooler months. glass. I can’t say that I’ve had pumpkin beer this way but the flavors of the cinnamon and sugar would seem to complement the flavors in the beer. Whether or not this would enhance or take away from the beer’s tasting properties remains in the opinion of the drinker. My absolute favorite pumpkin beer is Empire’s Pumpkin Ale, made with local pumpkins from Cazenovia, which are roasted and lightly spiced with pumpkin pie spices. I highly recommend it. Oktoberfest beers (also known as Märzenbiers) are copper colored aromatic, toasty and full-bodied beers. These beers are typically made with amber malt that’s caramelized by gentle roasting. The word märzen, German for the month of March was chosen to describe this type of beer for the month in which it is brewed. Why then, would a spring-brewed ale be known as an Oktoberfest beer? During the Middle Ages, brewers had a rough time brewing beers during the summer months when air-born bacteria could infect the batches. To have enough beer on hand during the summer, they worked overtime in March to brew an extra strong and well-hopped beer that would keep for a long time. As the weather cooled down and it was safe to brew again, the märzen kegs needed emptying out to make room for the new brews. The Germans had no trouble finishing them in a timely manner, and so March beer turned into an October beer. Just as with pumpkin beers, there is a plethora of Oktoberfests. Not sure which ones to drink? For starters, try Saranac’s Octoberfest or Great Lakes’ Oktoberfest. Better yet, make your own six-pack at a retailer and grab six different ones. Breakfast beers are those that have been crafted for drinkability with your morning meal. Just as there aren’t restrictions on when to drink these, there aren’t any hard and fast rules as to what constitutes a breakfast beer. In general, hearty and smoky beers (e.g. stouts and rauchbiers) tend to be great choices to add different flavors that complement MEMBERSHIP FALL WEEKDAY a stack of pancakes, eggs, SPECIAL! Every Woman’s Desire: Transforming and Empowering Through Style continued from pg 8 definitely our sense of role and status in the world. First, start by buying clothes based on YOU and not just because it “fits” and just because the clothes are on “sale”. Yes, I know, most of us are on a budget and yes; some stores do not cater to all size women. But purchase items with a purpose in mind and based your personality. So, for an example, is it for a special event; that job interview; or a long-awaited vacation? What about your personality? Are you a sassy? Or perhaps you are more reserved but a little whimsical; you may be shabby chic. Again, purchase clothes based on YOU, period. Also, when purchasing clothing ask yourself, if I purchase this item, will it pair well with other items in my closet? If so, with what? How many items can I pair this item with other clothes in my closet? What about accessories? Does this item fit my lifestyle, does it identify with my personal and professional image? Does it portray what I want to present to the world? Do you get the picture? By asking yourself these questions, you can determine if the article of clothing will fit your purpose, fit your personality, your lifestyle, and the image you want to portray to the world; which will ultimately emit confidence and make you stand out from the crowd. You may be asking, Ok, so what about the clothes I already have in my closet? Although most people may have lots of clothes, a huge portion of them are outdated, don’t fit properly, need to be taken to the dry cleaners, or are items that just don’t go with anything else in our closets. The same process applies; started thinking about your style and the message you want to give with your clothes. Take some time and come up with new combinations that work and to come up with new ones whenever I go out of style. By doing this you will find yourself getting rid of some clothing that just does not fit your purpose, personality and image. Keep in mind, that is exactly what we want; to get rid of clothing that does not serve your purpose. The goal is to create a stunning wardrobe and have less stress and frustration, so you can have your wardrobe organized in a way that streamlines your day to day life. Another way to look stylish, add drama and flare to your existing clothes is to wear accessories.Women’s accessories, like clothes, get to the heart of self-image, self-worth, self-esteem, self-empowerment, and the individual’s sense of style. Accessories can help you can reflect your personality and preferences without being outlandish. Women’s garments can be accessorized with jewelry, a scarf, a hat, a shawl, a purse, a belt, gloves, hair accessories and women’s shoes. All these items combined can make your outfits look charming, polished and complete. Accessories can be great for defining your good points and minimizing the less favorable ones. They also can help you look more fashionable even without wearing fad or trendy clothing. Accessories can be great for defining your good points and minimizing the less favorable ones. Preventive Medicine by DR. BARRY

Failure Failure … biggest loser … double failure if you want to be technically accurate. I don’t think I brag about my successes (maybe I just haven’t had that many) but I am not afraid to share my failures. If you are looking for some hard core medical advice … skip this column. -This is an article about my recent experiences. I share them for one reason, if you get to know me better you may actually start to trust my advice. I take some alternative views to dairy, vaccines, statins, and in general our medication oriented practice of medicine. Of course I don’t really want you to trust me … I want to serve as an instigation into your own research. Its your health, it’s your life … don’t you want to make informed choices? Well here’s two recent examples of my personal failure. Know me better and perhaps believe me more when I write about something medical I have researched.

Failure #1.

for years but when this style became available there was nothing else for me. I have taken classes for years but being a beginner in this sport is really not easy and it takes a while to really start to get good at it … at least for me. Once the dojo moved closer to me my attendance and therefore my understanding improved. BJJ has been described as wrestling and chess mixed together. I have no illusions. I am a 60 year old blue belt. Most other people would have long ago quit or have gotten better and received their black belt. Well, I was buoyed by a recent win at a tournament in New Jersey and signed up for the Worlds Masters BJJ tournament in Las Vegas. A weekend in Vegas is never a bad deal but I was way too nervous to enjoy anything at all until after my competition. The long and short of it is I lost in my first bout. Specifically I started a standing guillotine choke … we transitioned to the ground with my opponent in a better position. It took me a while to slowly reverse and come out on top but I got caught of in a triangle choke. I had We Love Our to tap out. Failure continued from pg 12 up against some other 60 year old guy would be easier. Not so, it turns out. My sweet Debbie tried to console me … ”Look honey, how many men are there out there that are doing this kind of stuff … and how many are doing it at your age … you should be proud.” I couldn’t hear her because I was muttering ‘loser city, loserooni, loser, failure, loser.’ But after all, it’s Vegas and we were soon distracted. That’s failure number one. Much time and effort went into this endeavor only to result in failure. Doesn’t faze me. I will learn from my failure.

Failure number 2 is another insight into where I am coming from. Again, if you know me a little you might be that much more motivated to —instead of just reading my recommendations— to actually take action or look into the sources I reference repeatedly. (Drs. Well, failure #2 involves a recent climbing trip in the North Cascade range in the state of Washington. It was climbing with the Haswell boys again. Another long weekend … another peak attempt. We have a great history of what were for me in many senses of the words “breathtaking escapades.” You have to be in very good shape to take on a Haswell hike and you can be guaranteed to be brought to your physical limit and don’t get me going about facing my fear of heights. We attempted Prophets Peak … not a 14,000 or 13,000 foot peak like we have focused on in the past … so the lower elevation should have made the climb easier but the complication was the greater than 5,000 foot elevation gain to do in one day. This is one day after the 10 mile hike up, 1,600 foot continued on pg 17

Dining Out by Kerilyn E. Micale

When you finally get time to go out and enjoy yourself you should absolutely make the most of it. We all need to spend more time enjoying what we are doing at this very moment. When it comes to a restaurant where you can truly enjoy the meal not just for the taste but also for the experience there is no better place to go than Ichiban Japanese Steakhouse, where dinner is the show! At Ichiban Japanese Steakhouse you will have a delicious meal prepared right in front of you by talented and entertaining hibachi chefs. These chefs not only cook an unbeatably fantastic meal but they also put on a great performance! Ichiban is conveniently located at 301 Old Liverpool Road in Liverpool. They are open Monday through Friday from 4:30 to 9, Saturday from 12:30 to 10 and Sunday 12:30 to 9. They are open Monday through Friday from 4:30 to 9, Saturday from 12:30 to 10 and Sunday 12:30 to 9. A tip to Ichiban is always a treat. From the hostess, to the servers and the chefs, all of the Ichiban staff is very friendly and accommodating. If you have never been to Ichiban you should certainly plan a trip soon. They are truly a cut above your average hibachi restaurant. What sets them apart is that they specialize in using the highest quality ingredients to prepare these fantastic meals on the hibachi grill right before your eyes! I will try not to spoil the surprise but it seems like every time we go the chefs seems to have another trick up their sleeves! You can look forward to flaming onion volcanoes burning at the forefront of the grill while the chef chops and cooks the other parts of the meal. You might also see some shrimp tails soaring through the air until gravity runs its course and the tails are expertly caught in the hats and pockets of chefs. Ichiban is a great place for a cozy date night, a group of friends, or a meal that is fun for the whole family! Kyle and I arrived at Ichiban on a warm September evening. As soon as we walked in we were immediately greeted by both a friendly hostess and the smell of delicious food being prepared. It was a busy Saturday night but because we had made reservations we were promptly seated at our table. Our friendly server began by welcoming

The flaming onion, one of the coolest spectacles during the show!

A hibachi chef turns the rice serving into different shapes with his spatula us to Ichiban and asking if everyone had been here before so that he could explain how hibachi at Ichiban works and what to expect. He also asked if anyone had any allergies so that they could make sure their food was prepared safely. He also asked if anyone was a vegetarian or had any other dietary restriction so that their food could also be prepared accordingly. At Ichiban they are very sensitive to the needs of their guests and pride themselves on being able to accommodate those who may have a difficult time being accommodated at many other restaurants. I have been to Ichiban dozens of times over the years and the servers are always consistent and fantastic about accommodating diners’ food safety and dietary preferences.

Ichiban continued from pg 15 We began our meal with a selection from the Maki Mono (Nori, Seaweed Wrapped Roll) Menu. Their sushi selections are unique and inventive and always both beautiful and delicious. We started with one of Ichiban’s famous sushi rolls, the Crystal Bubble, which is shrimp tempura, crabstick, lettuce and radish wrapped in soy paper and topped with spicy mayonnaise, shrimp, avocado, scallions and sesame seeds. It is served with soy sauce, wasabi and ginger. There is a reason that this gigantic roll is a best seller at Ichiban; it is fresh, crunchy and chewy all at the same time. The mayonnaise makes it slightly spicy but that spice is cooled by the flavor of the fresh avocado. For our entrees Kyle ordered the hibachi shrimp and steak with fried rice and I ordered the scallops and steak with fried rice. We both decided to upgrade the steak to filet mignon for a nominal fee. Our waitress quickly brought out our first course, a cup of house soup, Japanese style chicken broth with noodles. Our next course was a house salad with freshly made ginger dressing. This dressing is just the perfect amount of sweet and tangy, and I dare to say that this ginger dressing is the best in town. That is probably because it is made from a secret family recipe. While we were enjoying our first two courses our talented chef was busy making our fried rice look like a panda and then making it into a heart and used the spatula to make it beat. Our chef even cracked an egg by catching it on the side of his spatula. Our chef also began cooking our shrimp flambé appetizer which Freshly cooked filet mignon along with rice and fresh vegetables, all done is also included in the hibachi dinner. While cooking the shrimp our very talented chef in front of your eyes! caught the tails in his hat, in his pocket and even in a bowl behind his back. Our chef then began cooking the super fresh vegetables. The best part of watching the vegetable cook is when the chef makes an onion volcano and then he lights it on fire! The chef then started cooking the various meats ordered by the people at the table. Everything is cooked to order right in front of you. The ingredients used are the freshest and best quality ingredients available and it really makes a difference in the taste. The meal is also served with a unique and tangy dipping sauce that compliments all of the flavors of the meal. We finished our meal with a delightful cup of black and green leaf blend hot tea. Everything on our heaping plates was extremely high quality, super flavorful and cooked to complete perfection. We enjoyed every bite of our meals at Ichiban and we also enjoyed it again as lunch the following day thanks to the gigantic portions! Because of the scrumptious food and the fantastic show performed by the talented chefs, Ichiban is the ideal place to hold a birthday, anniversary or retirement party. It is also ideal for business meetings and office parties, showers and rehearsal dinners and a great place to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. Failure continued from pg 14 elevation with full packs on to base camp. This area isn’t like your local parks with well marked trails. -The guidebook says … ‘go uphill after the stream … there is no path just find your own path of least resistance.’ Ok … sounds kind of zen like but in actuality it’s going straight up a 30 degree slope covered in huge fallen trees and scrubby brush … 3,000 feet of this to get to a class 4 pitch. ( My translation: no technical equipment needed but if you miss a foot or hand hold you could get badly hurt or die. ) After this, a talus field of stone for a thousand more feet … again … straight up. I made it 4,000 feet up this 5,000 footer and just couldn’t keep going. -I gassed. I bonked. I could go no further. Five hours of continuous climbing in the Haswell manner (non-stop) and I was done. I had been soaked in sweat for hours and had probably done more elevation than on any other trip but I was still over 1,000 feet from the summit. The Haswell boys pressed on to the greater glory and summited a peak reportedly rarely done. I waited on the mountain side below and we retraced our steps back to camp. We started at 7:30 am and got back to camp at 7:30 pm. They summited. I did not. They succeeded, I failed. Failure again. For the second time in a month. I thought my conditioning was pretty good but it obviously wasn’t Haswell quality. If I cant talk myself out of another grueling trip next year I am going to really work on my conditioning. I am not usually the limiting factor in our climbs but I sure was this time. As I sat there in the meadow, waiting for them to climb down to me after peaking, I was cursing Pete for leaving me the smoked cheese instead of the cheddar. Who does that! As I waited shivering a little from dehydration, I looked out across the valley at a vista of peak after peak with glaciers –old growth forests and clouds just above, wildflowers and wild little blueberry bushes with berries all around me. Yes, this is failure but look where I am! Again, how many other people are even doing this? I guess the sporting slogan is “you’re still in the game.” So you know I preach about you addressing your diet and exercise, sleep and stress in my medical pulpit in my office, on the radio show and in these articles. Hopefully this article gave you a glimpse that I practice what I preach. Its your health, it’s your healthcare don’t sit back and be passive. Take control of your health by focusing on diet and exercise, sleep and stress. Make a plan with your doctor/life coach/trainer and meet frequently enough to monitor your progress and achieve your goals. You have to be proactive. Your doctor is adept at managing illness … that’s how we were trained. You must manage your wellness … and this, you know, begins with your diet. Your health is tremendously affected by your diet. You all know that but you ignore it until the illness sets in and you focus on that. Focus on more salad and less processed food and turn your health around. Don’t look for improved health from any pill … look to your dinner plate. Until next month … get well … stay well.

Feig’s production is sleek and beautiful, and the chemistry between his two leading ladies is absolutely superb. Meanwhile, when Emily goes missing, her void is definitely felt on the screen. The give and take between the women serves as the highlight of the production, and as the mystery unfolds, you long for the opportunity to see them share a scene once more. Serving as an entertaining diversion from the typical thrillers that tend to permeate the genre, A SIMPLE FAVOR may not be the most complex of mysteries, but is certainly a tale well worth delving into. Computers & the Web by NANCY ROBERTS

Spoofed! This is one tech column I’d really rather not be writing! A couple of days ago, I got a message from a friend via text (on my cell phone) that my landline number AND name had shown up on his caller ID. When he answered, thinking it was me, it was a hang up. Then he was called again, and this time, the person on the other end —with a heavy accent— told him his computer had been compromised. He hung up and let me know what had happened. That same day, another friend e-mailed to let me know the same thing had happened to him. Then, while working, I got a call on my cell phone. I didn’t answer, but the caller —irate— left a message letting me know in no uncertain terms that I was not to ever call again with that phishing attempt! I was too flustered to ask, when I returned the call, how she had gotten my cell number since the fake call had been from the landline. The truth is, I have had that landline number for literally decades – and I only maintained it for one particular client who needed to do regular conference calls, and the quality of the cell phone for that purpose wasn’t sufficient. I finally disconnected the phones when the conference calls were no longer necessary but

neglected to cancel the phone as it was “bundled” with other services now being provided with cable and internet. The final straw was dropped, however, when a police officer showed up at my door, wondering I suppose if I was running a call center out of my basement, annoying people with phone calls trying to convince people that their computers had been compromised. (This was perhaps the most disturbing element in my story – that my name and number would be so clearly identified, and the calls made with such frequency, that it would inspire someone to actually notify the police, or that the police would not be aware of spoofing.) He politely enough asked me if I knew a couple of people, names I didn’t recognize, and I explained the situation. get four or five calls on my cell phone a day from places like Los Angeles, Peoria, and Coral Gables, where I know no one. I never pick those up. I get some from my own area code where there is no ID, and a number I don’t recognize, so I send them to VM. If they’re real, I’ll get a message. And occasionally, a number would show up on my TV screen if I happened to be watching cable – but usually not with a name associated. Spoofing, of course, is based on the word meaning hoax or trick, and “is the practice of causing the telephone network to indicate to the receiver of a call that the originator of the call is a station (or, evidently, now individual) other than the true originating station. I dug a little further in, and learned that not only can your telephone service provider – cell or landline —do nothing about it— but in some cases, it’s not even illegal! You can file a complain with the FCC, and of course I’d urge you to do so if this happens to you. You can notify friends and family via an email blast and through social media that they should ignore any unexpected call from you. You can disconnect the phone from your service, though if you have registered for something or left a number with a service like a doctor’s office, or bank, or even credit card – you’ll have to track them all down and fix the issue if coupling a legitimate phone number is important. In essence, spoofing is not illegal unless the spoofer has the intent to defraud or cause harm. So, let’s say you’re a call center in Pakistan and you want to get someone on the line to convince them their computer is at risk, and then sell them a service plan. The service plan may even be perfectly legitimate. But the means of getting to you may be - shall we say, less that straight-forward. My anecdotal assessment is that there has been a significant uptick in the numOPEN DAILY 7AM - 8PM ber of calls I have been getting, though thus far, not associated with a name of CUSTOM ORDERS AVAILABLE! someone I recognize – or, for that matter, any caller ID at all. But my research since this occurred has certainly confirmed my suspicion that the problem is far from over. Beware. And don’t answer the phone if it’s from a 446 exchange and the caller ID says it’s me!

The Road to Wigan Pier continued from pg 22 denounce Bolshevism, that the cricket crowds may assemble at Lord’s, that the Nancy poets may scratch one another’s backs, coal has got to be forth-coming. But on the whole we are not aware of it; we all know that we ‘must have coal,’ but we seldom or never remember what coal-getting involves. … all of us really owe the comparative decency of our lives to poor drudges underground, blackened to the eyes, with their throats full of coal dust, driving their shovels forward with arms and belly muscles of steel.” He explores the feelings of powerlessness these working people experience – and musing why they don’t unionize and rise up, figures it has something to do with simply that: a feeling of powerlessness. But also, he acknowledges that unemployment (remember, this was the Depression) holds a sword over the heads of those with jobs. The alternative is The Dole, the dreaded dole. Though he is, in essence, arguing for Socialism in this book, he also seems to be arguing against it as he describes the minutia of rules for how much each person can collect, how many hours one might work before losing a benefit, what sort of increase a Head of Household might get versus a Single Man (and how monitored the comings and goings of those on the dole are, lest they cheat the system by actually working off the books). And even he admits that while the dole is preferable to starvation, “it probably is better that a man should waste his time with such rubbish as seagrass work than that for years on end he should do absolutely nothing.” The solution, of course, is to do something, anything. “Instead of raging against their destiny (the unemployed) have made things tolerable by lowering their standards.” Orwell dwells for quite a while on the dilemma of the system of “classes” into which we inevitably seem to sort ourselves, and admits that while, like others of his class (bourgeoisie/intelligentsia), he thinks the working class 22 State St.,Tully 315-696-5219 literally smells, he is at the same time a revolutionary, inclined to make such grand gestures as joining the Communist Party, and reading revolutionary Clothing books. And he admits that, like many of his peers, he enjoys making fun of Toys the Upper Classes as silly, dithering, and useless, while at the same time feelJewelry ing physically revolted by the degraded habits and condition of the working Housewares class person. And here he admits a truth that few of us could own up to: “The Gift Certificates fact that has got to be faced is that to abolish class distinctions means abolishing a part of yourself. Here am I, a typical member of the middle class. It is easy for me to say that I want to get rid of class-distinctions, but nearly everything I think and do is a result of class-distinctions. All my notions —notions of good and evil, pleasant and unpleasant, of funny and serious, of ugly and beautiful— are essentially middle-class notions. … the products of a special kind of upbringing and a special niche about halfway up the social hierarchy.” He asks the proper next question: “why not level up?” Add “hygiene, fruit-juice, birth-control, poetry” (and we in our of

Exercise & Fitness by JENNIFER NASTASI GUZELAK

Fall into Fitness Can you feel it? Ready or not, fall has arrived. The leaves are starting to turn, it’s getting darker earlier and you can feel the crispness in the air. Looking on the bright side, there’s so many outdoor activities to enjoy this time of year. The upcoming holiday season is approaching quickly. With it comes temptations that can easily make us fall off the fitness wagon. Supermarket shelves are already stocked with Halloween candy, magazines are filled with Thanksgiving recipe ideas, and there’s pumpkin spiced everything everywhere we go. Fall is a great time to start a fitness program because you’re going to create good habits for the holiday season and the upcoming winter months. There are plenty of ways to enjoy the season and stay fit. Below are just a few!

Find Your Motivation

People are motivated by different things. It’s important to first discover what your individual goals are, whether it’s losing a few pounds, putting on some muscle, or preparing for an upcoming event. Choose something you’ll enjoy doing and you are most likely to stick with, whether it’s walking or hiking with a friend, working with a trainer, or taking part in a group fitness class.

Drink Lots of Water

People often feel less thirsty when the temperatures starts to drop, but staying hydrated is just as important in the fall as it is when the warmer weather is here. When fall rolls around, continued on pg 33

Stay Active While Watching TV

Many people get geared up for fall premieres of their favorite television shows. I know I do! If you’re going to sit down and watch hours of TV, get moving. While you watch, you can walk in place, do squats, or lift weights. During commercials, do push-ups, planks or crunches. You’d be surprised at how much you can get done during commercial breaks!

Go the Extra Mile

If you’re spending the afternoon taking kids to soccer practice, instead of reading a book or visiting with another parent, walk around the outside of the field. You can also park farther away from your destination, take the stairs instead of the elevator, or take a walk on your lunch break.

Consider the 30-Day Rule

It takes about four weeks for the body to adapt to lifestyle changes. That’s why people who give up on their fitness programs tend to do so within the first thirty days. So, when the alarm goes off in the morning, don’t roll over and hit the snooze button. Get up and get moving!

The Road to Wigan Pier continued from pg 24 era would add “a college education”) and wouldn’t everyone be literally on the same level? As I read this, I began to understand why this book was revelatory for the man whose “must read” list this book was on. For while Orwell ascribes this hierarchical sorting to upbringing, we are in an epoch when (as we seem to do periodically) we are confronting “class” and “hierarchies,” as well as our place along these continua, with unusual scrutiny. Why does poverty persist, especially in a nation which has more than enough resources to provide for everyone? The “1 percenters” take it all, says one side. All you have to do is work a little harder, says the other. Orwell says something startling: “All … deliberate, conscious effort at class-breaking are, I am convinced, a very serious mistake. Sometimes they are merely futile, but where they do show a definite result it is usually to intensify class-prejudice. This, if you

Orwell says something startling: “All … deliberate, conscious effort at class-breaking are, I am convinced, a very serious mistake. Sometimes they are merely futile, but where they do show a definite result it is usually to intensify class-prejudice. come to think of it, is only what might be expected. You have forced the pace and set up an uneasy, unnatural equality between class and class; the resultant friction brings to the surface all kinds of feelings that might otherwise have remained buried, perhaps forever. … Scratch the average pacifist and you find a jingo. The middle-class I.L.P’er and the bearded fruit-juice drinker are all for a classless society so long as they see the proletariat through the wrong end of the telescope; force them into any real contact with a proletarian … and they are capable of swinging back to the most ordinary middle-class snobbishness.” He questions here whether either the middle class person who has stepped down, or the working class person who has risen, is happy once we see the world from another angle. The middle-class person who idealizes the working man and climbs into the coal cage is likely horrified at the filth and heavy work, and the working-class man who has scratched his way into the middle-class ranks may find it stultifying and bloodless. (He reminds us of Lady Chatterley’s Lover as a short-hand way of seeing the game-keeper as a lusty man of the soil, Lord Chatterley as a well-to-do but impotent upper-crust-man, and poor Lady Chatterley as the maid in the middle.) It is here that Orwell suggests Socialism as perhaps the answer. Not the political socialism – the “mechanized” one; but more one of space, time, nature, even troubles. It is in the nature of man, he suggests, to want to work. To do something. To be something. To be useful. He dismisses Fascism, the ultra-end of Capitalism, in his view (and recall that he’s viewing it during the rise of the Fascist state in Italy). He feels that Communism is unworkable as it carries the seeds of its own destruction, the “tactic of sabotaging democracy, i.e. sawing off the branch you are sitting on.” Southern & Northern Cuisine The problem lies, Orwell thinks, in that 4467 E. It turned out to be an unusually extraordinary occasion. The Governor gave a speech the likes of which I have not heard since John F. Kennedy. He is surely his Fathers son. You may recall his Dad’s “Tale of two Cities” convention speech of 1984. Greatness was glaring. And greatness was glaring in this short speech in a Union Hall in Syracuse, New York just a week ago. I also witnessed what we all need to see so much up close. Sincerity. Not just words, but sincere words. I seldom get chills, but I had them this day and Andrew Cuomo went from Gubernatorial to Presidential with a sincere hope on my part, that others research and follow this man and learn as I have that greatness is in our midst. This was a speech that you made you feel American. A speech full of the hallowed messages of our founding. Patriotism, character, strength, energy, and compassion are the thoughts those in attendance experienced that day. If you’re not on board take some time and research this Governor. Pay attention to his heart as he speaks so eloquently and you see the match. Then you will know. He believes in right and stands up to power. It is hard for us to see truth as our media is very susceptible to influences con-

nived by power. When we hear negatives’, it is important that we research sources and seek the truth as best as it can be found. In this era of cherry- picked sound bites context is important. On important issues, look things up. When you research Andrew Cuomo, you may well be surprised that behind negatives you will find real reasons and justifications. And when you look at his achievements and plans you may be very pleasantly surprised when you find success of caliber and scope, in New York State that can only be achieved by that rare breed that both understands Government and loves the people. If you are interested, google: “What projects in Central New York were supported by the NY Governor?” New York State has experienced a renaissance of vast improvement due to the Governors expertise and energy and deep care for our well-being. I am trying to let you know that after seeing the Governor several times and at several events and listening to his words and heart I offer to you that he demonstrates the leadership that hallows halls and honors the price we pay for freedom. The Hotel Syracuse, the Amphitheater and the New York State Fair and its fabulous improvements are examples of what have taken place throughout Central New York and New York State. Examples abound from these to Water Quality Protection. Pre-emptive continued on pg 32

careers of fellow Democrats. This included several Common Councilors and Department heads; Democrats that suggested a course disagreeing with her. Please note that what was done to them was widespread and stories abound throughout the party and the city. Investigative reporting seems to be a thing of the past. It certainly is not in Syracuse. My view is not harsh. It is genuinely deserved. The cold unnecessary damage in Miner’s wake strongly shows it will not end until she is no longer in position to damage human life. I seek justice to protect others. She seeks revenge. A glaring example is the race for Governor. -Stephanie Miner knows she will lose. But she does hold grudges. The Governor is a wise man and saw through her long ago. She knows this and hopes to be a spoiler. Narcissism prevents her from realizing she is not relevant in this race. The massive conniving she did in the local Democratic Party and much local media is all she has. Both need to take a hard look at how their susceptibilities are breached. Vendetta is not my way. I write this column for others that without doubt will be gravely harmed in the future if this woman is not stopped. When cruelty enters high office, even babies and parents do not matter. Many have sufa truth about one of his opponents: Stephanie Miner. The local media allowed much fered greatly, because of cruelty to take place in City Hall with very little reporting. The newspaper is vastly under the greed, narcissism and her influence as is other local media outlets. As CNN is left and FOX is right, the local mecruelty of Stephanie Miner. dia as well reports information in a way that supports owner agenda. Especially in local In the process of pursupolitics, neutrality and free press (truth not filtered by executives and owners) is not the ing efforts in various camstandard. Grave un-American damage took place in City Hall in a way that shamed the American way. America is based on the freedom to disagree and then to say so. The story paigns to remove her from office I found that I was far was not even recognized. from alone. I can’t name As we all see so often, effectiveness is lost in Government as Politicians, rather than names or tell the stories as learning from each other and seeking common ground, demean each other for opposthose that paid very dearly ing view. To do so within your own party is repulsively un-American. This article will deare largely professionals scribe a little about how Stephanie Miner’s power was attained and how it worked. I do that she would surely go this to show how she was able to influence in ways that ruined or gravely damaged the after at every opportunity if I mentioned them. Those that would not give up their sworn oath to the people and swear allegiance to her were gravely damaged. She instantly initiated strategies to remove anyone from their office or job when they disagreed and was often successful. She left lives shattered and a lesser city by depriving us of principled leaders. People doing what they were supposed to. I can briefly describe my story. It is a glaring example of heartlessness and cruelty with a complete disregard for the lives that would be ruined: 7 years ago I was on the top of the world. I was in my mid 60’s and through many years of hard work had found a way to secure my future and that of my son. I had worked over 14 years managing Century Transportation at the airport. The company was highly efficient and successful and had received several awards from the Chamber of Commerce. We had strong approval by 7 of 8 Common Councilors, the Commissioner of Aviation for 8 years, every Airline Manger and the preceding Mayor. Our reputation was one of efficiency and unbelievable capability. (Hundreds of people from diverted planes to Boston or New York City at 3am in a snowstorm happened several times.) The owner, myself and his son were very proud of this elite team of the best drivers anywhere. Because of this intense support and clear harm to the airport, all of her efforts were failing. So she staffed a 5-person committee with three recently promoted appointees that knew they would be ousted if they disagreed. The vote was 5 to 3 and her self-appointed legal department approved it. We lost this civilian company. 70 people were affected. It was purely unfair and cruelly wrong. After 14 years of hard work, she took my future. Without cause, without reason, without justice, without fairness. Her glaring willingness to satisfy greed and narcissism with cruelty ruined my hard-earned retirement. I am not alone. The Andrew Cuomo For President continued from pg 30 protection that few know about, so we never become Flint (Michigan). This has been funded as have numerous other measures that clearly show a rare caring leader is in our midst. That rare breed that has been absent, and so desperately needed in this great land. As the Governor moves forward this column will be following carefully. It is with great regret that due to election timing, I have to interrupt this article with

all of our classes will now be held at the exactly 1 mile from our current location remember to stay on top of your fluid intake to help with digestion, exercise recovery and appetite control.

Avoid Holiday Candy

There’s no doubt that it’s easy to put on a few pounds around the holidays. In addition to creating unhealthy habits, accumulation of this weight can over time lead to obesity. Make sure you pack lots of healthy snack options to munch on throughout the day to help deter you from grazing on sweets that pop up in the office, at home or at holiday parties.

Take Advantage of Autumn Activities

Autumn group events like hiking, apple picking and corn mazes are just a few of the active options the season has to offer that can also be a fun bonding experience for family and friends. Fall is one of the most beautiful times of year for getting outside! So, grab a friend and find some local parks or trails to walk, run or bike.

Sign Up for a Fun Run

With the fall season comes many holiday-themed fun runs and events. Look in the newspaper or online for costumed Halloween runs, Thanksgiving turkey trots and reindeer romps. Training for a specific goal like a race increases the likelihood that you’ll actually stick to an exercise program. Signing up with friends or family is another great way to keep yourself accountable along the way. continued on pg 43

Andrew Cuomo For President continued from pg 32 city is riddled with recipients of Miner’s vengeance and cruelty. It is hard for most of us to understand how power can be achieved and then maintained by those that do not belong. I will give you an idea of the Democratic Party Election Districts power framework. There are over a hundred committee members that are assigned areas. Each one has a different amount of power. Power is designated through Gubernatorial elections. An individual’s voting power is based on the number of Gubernatorial votes in their election districts in a given election. For example, those in the 17th ward where voter turnout is high, may have several hundred votes (Such as Stephanie Miner’s Sister –who has over 250 votes more than anyone else). The more powerful, the more favored and thus amiable to unpatriotic choice. In contrast a committee member on the west or south side may have 12 votes. Thus one person has many times more power than another. If you are smart you can influence committee membership in several ways. Thus, with favor and influence, Miner was able to influence enough of the party to ruin others. The base for her support is the upper thresholds of the Democratic Party that she has favored greatly. Beware that supporting the party is not always supporting “right.” Be your own person. There are enough favored Miner top party members, with tentacles ample to garner the support that reaches the approximate 2,000 that has insured Miner’s victories. That is enough to overcome the voter apathy that is clear in each election where she has participated. I never understood any of this until Trump. He has shown that there are far too many willing to sacrifice right and the Pubic good for self-interest. She is the female personification of this man, with that horrible character flaw of having a sense of cruelty and being ok with it. My Son’s future is as unimportant to her as Spanish Children are to Trump. As with Trump, when her cruel tendencies became clear they were accepted among her favored. An obsequious group of favored beneficiaries of a cruel and talented woman. Among this group your interests were not even on the scale. If they were you would be living in a much-improved city, and Pat Hogan or Juanita Williams would be Mayor.

My Mind To Yours

by DEBRA MERRYWEATHER

Living, Learning, and Timelines If you’re reading this, by the time you’ve read this, more will be known about whether Judge Brett Kavanaugh will hold the lifetime Supreme Court seat many people believe should already be occupied by Judge Merrick Garland. Politics involved in the looming 2016 election trumped President Obama’s right to choose a successor for Antonin Scalia and, in his opening remarks at the Senate hearing about Judge Kavanaugh, Ted Cruz seemed to want the 2016 election to override the Democrats’ right to question Trump’s nominee. Cruz stated that, when the American people voted for Donald Trump, they also voted for his full- transparency, pre-released list of SCOTUS candidates. Memory fails us all at times. On May 16, 2016, Fox News’ political website announced aspiring GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump’s list of 11 Supreme Court candidates. Fox News stated, “The eight men and three women on the list are all white. Trump’s list is also notable for the names that don’t appear. It omits two of the biggest stars in the conservative legal world, Judge Brett Kavanaugh of the federal appeals court in Washington, and former Bush administration Solicitor General Paul Clement.” Further, despite Ted Cruz’s inference, the American people did not pre-approve the actual names on Donald Trump’s 2016 pre-election SCOTUS list because, on November 8, 2016, although Donald Trump received 306 Electoral College votes while Hillary Clinton

Leah Murphy

received 270, 48% of the people voted for Clinton while 45.9% of the people voted for Donald Trump. Mrs. Clinton received 2,868,519 more votes than Mr. Trump. Both backtracking and jumping ahead in this timeline, it was on July 3, 2018, that the Associated Press reported that “Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh, Raymond Kethledge and Amul Thapar were each given 45-minute interviews with the President on Monday” (July 2, 2018). On July 10, 2018, President Donald Trump announced that Judge Brett Kavanaugh was his pick for the US Supreme Court. And, it was in 1215 that King John of England was forced by rebellious barons to sign the Magna Carta. My first thought is often that the Magna Carta was signed in 1066. 1066 is the date the Normans invaded England. When I watch “Jeopardy,” I always get that wrong. Anyway, twenty seven years ago, I participated in a rebellion. In 1991, on the advice of a therapist, I attended a week-long program geared toward co-dependents. I was placed in a group with abuse victims, some of whom were sexual abuse victims and I let the group know that I didn’t relate to them, which I am certain endeared me to them. The program had rules: no media and no aerobic exercise. We were there to feel our feelings and “sit” with our emotions. Leisurely paced walks were allowed but only if three or more people walked together. The rebellion happened mid-week. After dinner, several of us, during our permitted leisurely group walk, walked to the parking lot where one of us, I don’t remember who,

was our Lucky Winner for the

Night on the Town Contest! She chose SANTANGELO’S for dinner & will arrive in style in a limo from EXPRESS LIMOUSINE WITH CENTRAL NEW YORK

turned on the power to his/her car radio so we could find out how Clarence Thomas’ confirmation hearings were going. It’s kind of a blur, although I believe I remember one of our group, an intense older man from the Pacific NW, criticized both Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill. I didn’t know what I knew or thought about Anita Hill. I remember feeling disconnected, one of the reasons I first sought therapy. I remember the parking lot was dark. One car had license plates displaying white mountains on a green background. I believe I asked about the plates and the man from the NW laughed at me and said something to the effect, “do you think I drove here for this?” Memory can be a blur, particularly a memory of an assault because most assaults surprise the victim. Some recovered memories start out as a feeling that slowly connects to someone or something, without much detail, and lacking chronology. One of my therapists suggested I put together a memory timeline. At the time, I wondered why I should, could or would do such an exercise when I remembered nothing significant enough to write about. Back in 1991, I never imagined that I would discover I had a brain injury or that I would spend as much time as I do today, reading about trauma, brain function, memory loss and neurogenesis because I now accept that those issues are my issues. Things and people change and not necessarily in that order. Christine Blasey Ford, who maintains Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, at age 17 assaulted her when she was 15, has a Ph.D. in Psychology. The Washington Post reports that Dr. Ford’s research focuses on trauma, memory and resilience. (I sometimes cringe at the word “resilience.” Resilience, like smiling, can become forced and out of sync with one’s present experience. My experience is that you heal when you heal, and some wounds never heal.) Many people wonder why Dr. Ford didn’t come forward sooner. Maybe the 15- yearold Christine Blasey knew that her name would be dragged through the mud, while today, citizen Dr. Christine Blasey Ford feels she must speak out because a lifetime seat on the highest court in the land might go to someone who might intrinsically value male over female. By the time anyone reads this, Dr. Ford will have spoken for herself. We live and learn.

The Road to Wigan Pier continued from pg 28 to the pre-machine days of one man, one hammer, we might sort the problem out. But “We are all dependent upon the machine, and if the machines stopped working most of us would die … for the present there can be no question of accepting or rejecting it.” Therefore, The Answer is not in over-throwing mechanization, in Fascism or Communism. “The real Socialist,” he writes, “is one who wishes not merely conceives it as desirable, but actively wishes – to see tyranny over-thrown.” To get there, he must be willing to get rid of his “sandals and pistachio-coloured shirts, and every vegetarian, tee-totaller and creeping Jesus” be sent away to do Yoga exercises quietly. “The more intelligent kind of Socialist (must) stop alienating possible supporters in silly and quite irrelevant ways … You have got to make it clear that there is room in the Socialist movement for human beings, or the game is up.” We must stop, he says, talking about the “capitalist” and the “proletarian,” and “a little more about the robbers and the robbed.” The middle class person, the clerk, the engineer, the grocer, or civil servant —they too are The Robbed. The enemy, if “enemy” is the right word, is the plutocracy— and that group doesn’t wear just a single style of clothing or run a single type of organization. In Orwell’s view, the Upper, Middle, and Working Classes must not see one another as “the enemy,” or “the other,” but rather together in an effort to keep extremes at bay, and keep life for the ordinary living, wherever one happens to land in life.

Fall into Fitness continued from pg 33

Turn Fall Chores Into a Workout

According to Harvard Health, a one hundred and fifty-five-pound person can burn one hundred and forty-nine calories by raking leaves for thirty minutes. Outdoor chores can be a great way to enjoy the season, get the heart pumping and burn extra calories.

Exercise Earlier in the Day

TABLE HOPPING

This Month’s Recipe Butternut Squash Chili

Recipe from savorytooth.com

Try to exercise in the morning or during the day. With the time changing and the sun setting earlier, it can feel as though it’s later in the day than it really is. This can make you more tired than usual. Getting into a routine of working out early will guarantee the workout gets done and still allow time later in the day to relax.

Take Your Workout Indoors

As the weather cools down it can become difficult to stay motivated. This would be a good time to shop around for a local gym. Trying a variety of different indoor activities and varying your workouts will help keep a fresh spin on exercise. Group fitness classes are a great way to meet people with similar fitness goals and stay motivated.

Be Realistic About Your Schedule

With the holiday season in full swing, your schedule will fill up quickly. If you know you’re going to a lot of holiday gatherings and family outings, don’t commit to hours at the gym. Be honest with yourself about how much time you can realistically devote to working out each week.

In Conclusion:

We’re all busy; that’s just part of our lives. You have to start planning exercise, just like you do everything else. Put it on the calendar, and make the commitment because later will turn into never. Fall is a super season for shaping up. So, get out and get moving! With the change of seasons comes a renewed time to rethink and restart. Good luck to you. I have been a personal trainer for over seventeen years and I absolutely love what I do. I honestly feel that I have one of the best jobs out there! The most rewarding part of my profession is helping one of my clients succeed at reaching their personal fitness goals. Making a difference in someone’s life makes it all worthwhile. I am currently certified by the National Sports Conditioning Association, Apex Fitness Group, and the International Sports Science Association.
