Tales from the Vine

by CASSANDRA HARRINGTON

Buttonwood Grove Winery Wins “The Oscars” Each year, a group of experts gather at the Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel of the Finger Lakes Region to sample the best of the best in New York Wines. It’s a competition called the New York Wine and Food Classic, sometimes referred to as “The Oscars” of New York Wine. On August 8th & 9th, 21 judges sampled 915 wines, 27 hard ciders and 16 craft spirit entries, and have the tough task of choosing which are their favorites in each category. The top prize at this competition is the prestigious Governor’s Cup, a large silver chalice that recognizes the “Best of Show” or top prize of all the entries in the Classic. The Cayuga Lake Wine Trail is extremely proud to announce that this year’s Governor’s Cup winner is member winery, Buttonwood Grove. Their 2016 Riesling came out on top, among 958 entries. Winning this award is a big deal in the wine industry. With the Finger Lakes being known specifically for their Rieslings, this comes at no surprise. The kicker … Buttonwood is a small batch winery, so the award-winning wine is unfortunately in short supply! The Buttonwood team has been striving to make a name for themselves.

Buttonwood’s winning Riesling grapes are from vines planted on the property in 1999 and mark the second year this Riesling has been classified as an “estate” wine.

As Finger Lakes wine have grown in popularity, the wineries here have global competition, not just regional anymore. “There are so many wineries out there, and hearing that the industry’s best say we make great wine … it’s incredible. This (award) does more for our reputation than I can do in hours and hours of work. It’s amazing to gain this credibility. I think we’ve staked our claim in the wine-world. All of the advertising in the world is not as valuable as this accolade that tells everyone that we make fine premium estate wines,” said Marcia Klue, Buttonwood’s Marketing Coordinator. She learned of the award while on

vacation with her family in Maine, which has made her vacation that much sweeter! Dave Pittard and his wife Melissa, purchased Buttonwood from it’s founder, Ken Reimer, in 2014. Dave is a fifth generation apple farmer from Onondaga County who discovered his love for agriculture at an early age. Dave considers himself a “rookie,” and owes much of the credit to his winemaker, Sue Passmore. Sue has spent many years in the industry and is a self-taught winemaker. The winning Riesling grapes are from vines planted on the property in 1999 and mark the second year this Riesling has been classified as an “estate” wine. This means everything involved in the end product –from the grapes, the making, and the bottling, all happened on Buttonwood-owned property. This same wine also recently won Gold at the 2017 INDY International Wine Competition, where wines from all over the globe were submitted. Over the past three years, Dave and his team have been diligently working on their image and their property, to make it one-ofa-kind. Buttonwood has four cabins on site that are booked well over a year in advance, a beautiful Scottish Highland Cow named Melody (who even has her own Facebook page!), a new production facility and more space for more tanks (which will equal more award-winning wines), the recent addition of an enhanced deck space for their summer parties, which garner much attention, as well as their very own waterfall! Buttonwood Grove has a spectacular view of the lake, and as you can imagine, is one of the top locations for weddings on Cayuga Lake. Buttonwood isn’t the only winery along Cayuga Lake to take home a medal at this year’s Classic. Amongst our wineries, 114 other medals were awarded. In the double gold category: Buttonwood Grove Winery, Goose Watch Winery, Knapp Winery, Thirsty Owl Wine Company, Toro Run. In the gold category: Goose Watch Winery, Knapp Winery, Lucas Vineyards, Swedish Hill Winery, Thirsty Owl Wine Company, Toro Run Winery. In the silver category: Buttonwood Grove Winery, Goose Watch Winery, Hosmer Winery, Knapp Winery, Lucas Vineyards, Montezuma Winery, Swedish Hill Winery, Thirsty Owl Wine Company, Toro Run Winery, Treleaven. In the bronze category: Goose Watch Winery, Hosmer Winery, Knapp Winery, Lucas Vineyards, Montezuma Winery, Swedish Hill Winery, Thirsty Owl Wine Company, Treleaven. This toast is for you, Buttonwood Grove —to Sue, the Pittards and the rest of the gang— congratulations and thank you for being a member of the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail. Sounds Of Syracuse

by CHUCK SCHIELE

The Audacious Glory of Professional Victims Syracuse’s very own Professional Victims have all the makings of a bona fide late-20th century punk rock band—in the 21st century. Spearheaded by band mates Shawn Sullivan on guitar and vocals and Ashley Cox on vocals and keyboards, the group which has had a number of line-ups, remains well-known for their irreverence and high energy. Come to think of it, a male and female led punk band is somewhat rare, even in today’s vast music landscape. And in their quest for developing an army of like-minded rebels they go forth into their rock and roll nights wielding their antiestablishment attitudes and super punchy, less-than-three-minute, guitar-driven songs. And into the night they do go. From headlining shows at The Bitter End in NYC and fostering a commanding posture here in Syracuse, Professional Victims snagged a 2106 win for their CD Fathom the Cosmos at the SAMMYs for Best Alternative Record. Further, they’ve been gaining radio play and recognition throughout the northeast from Boston to Philadelphia. And its no wonder. They play like they’re in an arena no matter how big or small the venue is. Their live shows move at an aggressive pace —try to keep up— as they

drive through their sets without the expected mindless and routine banter between songs. Driving guitars and furious tempos help to push Professional Victims’ message. “We keep pushing ourselves to write new songs, find new sounds and keep it fresh. That’s what drives us and sets us apart, we want to really make something not reproduce it.” explains Ashley Cox. “We utilize piano and synthesizer help to create variety while also preventing the band from being pigeon-holed into a singular genre,” she explains, further.

Neither shy nor reserved, the group’s bold lyrics are delivered by equally bold vocals with both Sullivan and Cox sharing the bold duty. Ballpark Brewfest When you hear the name Syracuse Chiefs, you think of baseball and beer is not the highlight of your visit. However, the Ballpark Brewfest features local brewers and distributors for this event. Last year, the Brewfest had over 1,500 patrons all on the concourse. This year’s goal is 2,000 guests to attend on Saturday, September 23rd from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. Jason Smorol, the General Manager of the NBT Stadium and the Chiefs realized that this event has potential to be a spectacular event. “This will be our third year,” says Jason, “and this year we will be using the whole field. Last year was a lot of fun on the concourse, but we missed out on the beautiful weather.” So this year, Jason decided to move much of the festivities outside. “We’re expanding in many ways. The last two events, we catered all the food, but this year we’re inviting food trucks in to add diversity. We hope to expand a little more each year.” “We try to do something new each year. This year we going to try either a corn hole or a can jam. We’re also going to put a T near 2nd base and let folks try to hit the ball out of the park.” Another new feature will be the set up –New York State beers and ciders will be on the 1st base side of the field, and world beers will be on the 3rd base side. As we were speaking, a dozen other ideas came to Jason and he said, “See, there’s always something we can do to make it different and better. We hope to make the event grow in popularity and diversity each year.” In the future,

one thing that may be added is live music. This year, the music will be provided by DJ Double Play. The interactive video board will add a new dimension to the program. What makes this event so different is the ability to speak with brew masters face to face and one on one. Some of the local brewers featured will be Fred Mack, Tim Butler and Pete Kirkgasser from Middle Ages brewery, Empire Brewery and Eastwood brewery. These local masters not only have excellent beer, but they willingly share their knowledge to others interested in brewing their own beer. “Each year we feature new products such as rare items where there is only one keg available” said Jason. “We will have at least 60-70 varieties of beer and hard cider.” The brewers there also will bring new blends for their customers to try, most of whom are beer aficionados and connoisseurs. There are also lots of SEPTEMBER 8TH safety features built into the stadium. It is completely handicapped accessible. Another perk to have the brewfest here SEPTEMBER 16TH is the parking. Preventive Medicine by DR. BARRY

It’s Not Just Lyme Disease You Have to Worry About The Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever was recently diagnosed in Spain. Yes, this is a relatively newly diagnosed viral tick-borne disease and it can be a mild flu-like illness or you can bleed out from your mouth, eyes and nose and die and of course there’s no treatment for it. So along with Lyme Disease and Babisiosis and Dengue and West Nile Virus and Swine Flu and Chikungunya you now have the Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever to worry about. It’s not an issue in Central New York yet but with the rate of world traveling look for it to be in a theater near you soon. This report comes from the New England Journal of Medicine July 13th 2017 and talked about an AUTOCHTHONOUS infection. I didn’t even know what that word meant so I had to look it up and it means that the infection didn’t come from a traveler it came from someone living in Spain who contracted the illness without traveling to the endemic area. You can rest easy, for now, regarding the Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever but let’s not let your guard down because we have a whole lot of home grown tick borne diseases to contend with. As reviewed in the Cleveland Clinic Journal Of Medicine Volume 84 July 2017 there are a host of tick borne 7 diseases right in our own backyard to worry about. All that’s tricky is not Lyme. you have to contend not only with Lyme Disease but also Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Tularemia. Looking at the maps that show where these tick borne diseases are found it doesn’t look like there is one state in the union that doesn’t have a problem with at least one of these vectors. The names of the bugs alone are daunting … Rickettsia rickettsii is the bug that causes Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and it’s carried by the tick Dermacentor variabilis … now there is a Rickettsia Parkeri infection as well but this virus is borne by the tick Amblyomma maculatum. There is an illness called Human granulocytic anaplasmosis that is borne by the common tick Ixodes scapularis. Don’t forget about Human Monocytic Ehrlichiosis with the tick vector Amblyomma americanum … this same tick carries the pathogen Ehrlichia ewingii. So far the infection called Ehrlichia muris like agent is limited to Wisconsin and Minnesota but for how long? Lets not forget Babesiosis which is also borne by Ixodes scapularis and this illness presents, as do all the others with fatigue, fever or malaise headache, myalgia or arthralgia, nausea, anorexia, and cough. In the laboratory all of these infections can cause leukopenia and thrombocytopenia, that is low white count and low platelets. You would think that an infection would cause an elevated white count but not in these cases. Let’s round out the list by mentioning tick borne relapsing fever which is caused by Borrelia hermsii which is born by ticks which so far now only involve the Pacific Coast in Northwest and Southwest continued on pg 15

CS: How did you come up with the name for the project? AC: Shawn came up with it. He’s the funny one. I think he heard it in a Robert De Niro movie. It reminds us of both past experiences and of the way some people behave in general. CS: You have a variety of genres lurking in your sound. Who do you listen to or refer to for inspiration? AC: Shawn is inspired by bands like Arcade fire, The National, Pixies, and Weezer. I’m glad that for the most part we love the same music, although Shawn always gravitates toward heavier guitar-based songs. I’m more pop/alt—loving Santigold, or Sylvan Esso and St. Vincent. CS: How do you go about mining your material and writing? AC: We’ve found it’s best when it happens naturally. I think our best songs are written in a day. I will take notes on whatever paper I can find and put it all together like a puzzle when I’m inspired to play. Shawn seems to have a more organized way of writing, and both of us are fueled by the things we are passionate about. I’m seeing so many new songwriters on the scene, as well as veterans still making great music and putting in awesome shows. It’s diverse, and I think the alternative genre might be bigger than even the blues scene finally! There is a lot of support by the community and even fellow musicians. CS: What do you have to say to the budding musician? AC: Play all the open mics, introduce yourself to everyone, play on the streets for fun, and go see other bands! CS: What’s on the horizon? Computers & the Web by NANCY ROBERTS

Dig That Information Yesterday my iPhone went all “fuzzy,” a highly technical term we used to use to describe what happened when your television set’s signal was interfered with. Then it went black. Fortunately, a hard re-boot (on the iPhone, the Home button plus the Power button pressed simultaneously) fixed things. The episode, plus the state of the world right now, got me wondering about our reliance —dependence— upon our devices and the internet not just for basic communication (texts and phone) but for information. And what, thought I in my most conspiracy theory fashion, if that information was being managed in a malign way? Rumor has it that the once-incorruptible Google (“Do no harm”) has been corrupted. At least, in terms of unbiased search results. There’s been a lot of back and forth about that –but when you think about the sheer size and scope of Google, you can appreciate the devastation of a potential corruption. Google itself is part of a suite of businesses owned by a holding company, Alphabet. (GOOG on the stock exchange.) Google owns more than 200 companies, as of this writing, including Android (the software that powers multiple devices, including phones and wearables), Google Maps (Google Earth), and DoubleClick, the targeted advertising giant that will track you wherever you try to hide on the Internet. Google also owns WAZE (a very popular GPS/navigation system), and SLIDE for social gaming.

Google is most people’s go-to for search. In fact, “google it” has become like “zipper.” It’s a brand, but it’s also the generic.

If you read through its acquisitions, Google has pretty much every angle sewn up when it comes to software: robotics, photos, video editing, mapping, adware, gaming, travel, speech synthesis. All well and good, as for us, the users, it’s a benefit to have apps that, if not now, eventually, will play nicely together. But, the biggest commodity Google owns is data: sheer, massive, huge amounts of data. Put a photo of where you were last night and what you had for dinner? Do you have a blog? What did you search for yesterday and the day before? What have you purchased online lately? It’s all data, and whether it’s aggregate or personal, it’s recorded, parsed, measured, and stored. But what does that mean for you in terms of that search bias I mentioned? Among other things, Google is most people’s go-to for search. In fact, “google it” has become like “zipper.” It’s a brand, but it’s also the generic. And during the last presidential campaign, Google search faced charges of biased search results: “Creators of the video on the YouTube channel SourceFed, which had accumulated over 15 million views on Facebook and nearly 300,000 on YouTube by Friday evening, alleged Google’s search engine Autocomplete feature suppresses searches pairing the presumptive Democratic nominee with criminal activity. continued on pg 12

Dig That Information continued from pg 11

If someone types “Hillary Clinton cri,” Google’s search suggests phrases like “Hillary Clinton crime reform” and “Hillary Clinton crisis”, said Matt Lieberman, host and writer for SourceFed, in the video. Yet after typing the same phrase on Yahoo or Bing search, suggestions on crimes and criminal activity are among the first suggestions, he notes. SourceFed said the autofill on Google occurs despite the fact “hillary clinton crimes” is a far more popular search phrase than “Hillary Clinton crime reform.” (USA Today) Google defended itself, and the little teapot’s tempest died down, but the recent headline firing of an employee for writing a memo about women, STEM careers, and the corporation, has heated the issue up again. That, and the issue that has arisen over advertising and political commentary. YouTube has long since monetized channels of content. Individuals created content, and a channel, and advertising was inserted into it. Popular YouTube channels got tons of likes, subscribers and watches –and the money partially accrued to YouTube and partially to the channel. More and more individuals Mon-Thurs $ 95 were able to bypass the TV or Cable 11AM-8PM programmers and simply put their stuff out there for people to watch. And then YouTube began to “de-monetize” some of them. Again, that scary idea of AT MOOSE MOUNTAIN, HASTINGS, NY censure. (Many have gone to platforms THOROUGHBRED like Patreon to avoid this, and allow RACING users to subscribe directly.) ALL MONTH LONG! Just the other day, I wanted to know what actor played a role on a TV series. WE CATER FOR ANY EVENT! available, it was copious, and I didn’t question it. Now, granted, that’s “safe” information. But today, I did a little political search. The details aren’t important, my sudden “oh-oh” moment was. It dawned on me that I have no way of knowing whether what I got back was the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. I had to test the idea: but how do you test whether search results are biased if the search results are biased? The obvious possibilities are: use several different engines (Bing, Yahoo, and Google, for example) and three different browsers (Chrome, Explorer, Firefox), and run a few permutations on the same search string (or better yet, let the browser complete your string on what could lead to a biased result - as noted above) and see what happens. My results? I got a different set of links for each one, and in different order, but nothing that would send me into Information Panic. Ultimately, though, it’s possible that we’ve taken a step or two back into the library stacks: select your topic, search, then deliberately go to publications and sources that you simply know about, and search the topic within those references. Digging may have to become a little more manual again.

Annabelle: Creation I truly cannot believe that I’m writing these words, but with the release and subsequent success of ANNABELLE: CREATION, the CONJURING film franchise has now grossed over $1,000,000,000 at the box office. Yes, you read that right, a BILLION dollars. This has moved the marketable machine into some pretty elite territory, joining the likes of STAR WARS and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN. The most astounding aspect of the CONJURING universe is the sense of familiarity, and yes, repetitiveness, of each chapter. In many ways, it feels as if the same film has been released numerous times, yet it has become a stalwart that will provide its audiences with plenty of “gotcha” scares, and

enough of a storyline to justify its own existence. ANNABELLE: CREATION is, in some ways, an origin story. It tells the tale of a group of young girls that come live in an old farmhouse that has been converted into an orphanage. The orphanage is overseen by a couple, Samuel (Anthony LaPaglia) and Esther (Miranda Otto) who had lost their daughter 12 years prior when she was a struck by an automobile. Almost all of these pathogens can be treated with doxycycline just like Lyme disease except for tickborne relapsing fever and this bug is treated with tetracycline this isn’t a virus this is a spirochete. There is something called Southern Tick Associated Rash illness but we don’t even know the pathogen although we think the vector is Amblyomma Americanum. Okay, let’s round out the list with Tularemia, Heartland virus infection and Powassan virus infection. The Powassan virus Is apparently an uncommon Flavivirus but it’s becoming more common right here in New York State. Tularemia at least you can treat with an antibiotic. The Heartland virus which is borne by the tick Amblyomma Americanum (most likely) is also for now only diagnosed in Missouri and Tennessee. Bottom line is that “Tickborne illnesses should be considered in patients with known or potential tick exposure presenting with fever or vague constitutional symptoms in tick endemic regions. Given that tick This bull’s-eye rash is also called bite history is commonly unknown, erythema migrans is a rash caused absence of a known tick bite does by Lyme disease. not exclude the diagnosis of the tick

Tick avoidance is the most common effective measure preventing tick borne infections.” Hopefully all of this talk of ticks doesn’t make you afraid to go outdoors. Just wear long pants and long sleeves and/or use a lot of DEET and check yourself when you come back inside. If you do experience any illness that doesn’t have a good explanation … work with your doctor to check for other possibilities and don’t rest until you have an answer or get better. When that Rare Individual Enters the Arena “JUANITA PEREZ WILLIAMS FOR MAYOR OF SYRACUSE” This is about Juanita Perez Williams. The day we need you: PRIMARY DAY, SEPTEMBER 12TH is nearly here. An extraordinary and highly talented individual is in the arena running for Mayor. Juanita has an astonishing list of achievement and qualification. It is because these achievements are matched with character and integrity and compassion that these words are written. Juanita is that rare breed that sets the standard. This article describes as best as I can what it means to be a Democrat and to be proud of those principles that embrace our founding like no other party. And this is Juanita Perez Williams. As I mentioned last month, I had the opportunity to meet Juanita Perez Williams in a previous campaign and was quickly drawn to her sense of fairness and her strong dedication to that fairness. I mentioned that in keeping with this, Juanita demonstrates in all of her thinking the one quality that has always impressed me and is too often lacking in leadership. -And that is an understanding of and respect for the interests of everyone, without bias, no matter what your income, your look or your address. all of our lives. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of the “PRIMARY OF SEPTEMBER 12.” Of the 38,356 Democrats in the city in 2013 only 7,213 voted in the primary. This means in a primary with 3 candidates the outcome could easily be determined by a very low number. This is the kind of election where in “individual” matters. And if you influence just a few folks they may well swing the election. So please, find a friend who lives in the city and please show them Juanita’s 100 day plan at info@JuanitaForMayor.com and ask them to please, please vote on SEPTEMBER 12, 2017. Juanita has prepared a 100 day plan made up of 70 components. You will find a copy at: www.juanitaforMayor.com. This is a comprehensive list of the needs of the City and sets the course. A major component of that plan is a complete Block by Block assessment of the Cities needs and plans to meet each need. Juanita will know every street, every vacant house, every pothole, every sidewalk, every blight in every park, the paths and ages of every pipe and water line. Juanita and researchers will talk to residents on each block and ask them of their concerns. She will know the locations of deer and what attracts them and how to safeguard from their activity. Be it, crime and safety, or noise, or parking, or beautification, or schools, or transportation, or deer encroachment Juanita will come to an embracing view of what the people themselves say they want and need. Block by block research involves the welfare of every citizen and the physical welfare of every block in every neighborhood. creations were no longer of significance to him. One of these dolls, of course, is Annabelle. She is a mute, undeniably creepy creature that had been packed away for over a decade, before wriggling her way out of hiding. Once discovered, she begins to terrorize the girls of the orphanage and all of those that stand in her way. The fourth installment in the CONJURING universe has a handsome production design, and while it is unlikely that it will win over any new converts, it will certainly appeal to fans of the franchise. An old-school orphanage in the middle of nowhere is a standard issue horror setting, and it remains an effective one. The fact that Annabelle doesn’t spout off zippy one-liners like Chucky used to, nor does she (visibly) scurry around, which, in most films like this, yields unintended comical hilarity. Instead, director David F Sandberg heavily relies on the art of implication, which has made there mere presence of Annabelle far more frightening than any direct action she has perpetrated. She is, for the most part, stationary and intimidating. The downside of this, however, is that the film feels rather aimless. Part ghost story, part homicidal doll story, it never has ANNABELLE: a clear direction or focus. CREATION The fact that ANNABELLE: CREATION RATED: R does nothing to distance itself from the RUN TIME: 1h 49min countless others like it in terms of plot GENRE: Horror, Mystery, Thriller doesn’t come in a shock in any way, nor is STARRING: Anthony LaPaglia, the biggest flaw of the film. installments in the SAW franchise (which will get another chapter this October) it simply doesn’t stand out against many of its modern counterparts. Horror has been enjoying a resurgence of creativity with recent hits like THE BABADOOK, IT FOLLOWS, and DON’T BREATHE, and it is productions such as these that are far more memorable than the by-the-book thrills exhibited in the pedestrian ANNABELLE: CREATION. A special thanks goes to Regal Cinemas at Destiny USA for allowing me to attend this month’s film.

Equality, integrity, inclusive, deserving, patriot, loyal, fair, caring, compassionate, estimable, unity, trustworthy, together, true, just to name a few. The list became quite large. It became so clear “Democrats” are what our founders intended for this country to be. In this campaign everyone feels very good about themselves and what they are doing. Thinking About How We Think Rene Descartes, rationalist, skeptic, mathematician, scientist and modern philosopher is best known for his statement, “I think, therefore, I am.” Descartes, born in 1596, also stated that “everything is self-evident,” a statement which, in a world of microscopes, PR and fMRI’s, proves not always to be true. Descartes concluded, “it is not enough to have a good mind; the main thing is to use it well.” We are first identified by given name, gender, family, tribe or clan, ethnicity, religious background, and geography. We are all somebody and someone. Yet, it is an insult to say of someone else that he or she thinks they are “somebody.” Most groups, even friendly groups, form unofficial hierarchies in which members are supposed to keep their places. Life forces competition even among people who hate to compete. And it often isn’t until later in life, if ever, that many of us discover that internalized early labeling might be controlling us. Early, external value judgements concerning appearance, personality and culture leave many competent adults with underlying anxiety. And, the psychological phenomena known as projection occurs all the time when people who don’t consciously acknowledge their own troubling issues readily notice those issues in others. Very often people see us as not as we are but as they are. People don’t always know themselves. slow to recognize how they perpetuate their own difficulties. Education always threatens somebody’s power. Oppressors often discourage education. Descartes said, “the reading of all good books is like a conversation with all the finest men of past centuries.” (Just men?) Today there are informative books written by women and men in our times about our times: for instance, J.D. Vance’s “Hillbilly Elegy” and Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s “Infidel.” In a world where identity politics threatens to compartmentalize all of us, it benefits us to acquaint ourselves with people unlike us. J.D. Vance and Ayaan Hirsi Ali, both of whom grew up in volatile cultures where centuries old religious texts were quoted for modern day guidance, chose education as the vehicle in which they navigated their volatile cultures and circumstances. Both writers hold differing and individual conclusions. All knowledge is learned in context. Neurons that fire together wire together and, for better or worse, the beliefs and information drilled into or instilled in us early on have long lasting effects. Very young children learn to respond to their own perceptions amid the emotional dynamics of the adults around them. Likewise, many adults live sedentary home lives inundated with attention demands from headline based 24-hour news broadcasts and the short burst, depth-free and often irrational exhortations of social media. People expect those with whom they identify to “have their backs.” Fight versus flight anyone? Modern neuroscience suggests that neurochemicals such as dopamine reinforce both bad and good diet, physical habits, and healthy or self-destructive coping mechanisms. It is more effective to replace a bad habit with a good habit. It takes time for people fighting compulsions and addictions to feel healthier, steadier, and more in control of themselves. Now, as in the Rockefeller Drug Law Era, there are calls for a war on addic-

tions but not for improved biology education. People without power often seek substitutes; adrenaline-fueled demonstrations can be addictive. Angry calls for action appear and feel powerful in the moment. Calm suggestions for positive incremental change seem weak. They’re not. Our nation’s self-image includes a narrative of freedom loving self-reliance. But freedom, self-reliance and autonomy cannot flourish in a climate of fear-mongering and disinformation. World history suggests that freedom and safety, including the freedom to feel safe, can slip away slowly when people forget the past. It is self-evident that as differently as we think, we’re all here now. How many of us think about how we have come to think about who we are as human beings right now?

Fabio’s Antica Cucina At Fabio’s Antica Cucina they know that dining out should be an experience, not just a meal. It has been said that you eat not only with your mouth but also with your eyes and Fabio’s has truly mastered this concept. I would dare to say that dining at Fabio’s is an experience that can be truly enjoyed by all five senses. When at Fabio’s you will hear the soft tone of conversation and laughter over the crackling fire of the wood brick oven. Your nose will be filled with the smells of the delicious cuisine, including fresh baked bread and pastries, all of which is made on site. You will feel the softness of the chairs and linens which are the perfect counter to the hardness of the wrought iron décor. Your eyes will be amazed by the impeccable décor teaming with attention to detail as well as the gorgeous and meticulous plating of each and every dish served. Lastly your taste buds will be overwhelmed by the intense and delightful flavors that make up every single bite. Fabio’s Antica Cucina is an authentic Italian restaurant and cocktail lounge located in Downtown Syracuse at 344 S. Warren Street at the street level of the Icon Tower. Yorker’s for decades. The dream of bringing Italy to Syracuse started when Joseph “Sal” Zazzara was serving in the United States Armey during WWII. During this time he would write love letters to his soon to be wife dreaming about their future together and opening a restaurant when he returned from war. This dream became a reality in 1952 when Sal, Lucy, and their three children opened The Villa on Syracuse’s north side. Although the Villa was destroyed in a fire a few pieces of art survived, including a large mural named “Dante’s Inferno” and today those pieces can be found on display at Fabio’s. Fabio’s was opened earlier this year by Sal’s son Grazzi, his grandson Grazzi Jr., and Fabio Santalucia, a man who left Italy several years ago with a dream of opening an authentic Italian restaurant, much like Sal. Today the team has once again brought Italy to Syracuse, paying homage to the old and embracing the new. One of the cornerstones of authentic Italian cuisine is that some things must FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 8TH be made fresh, from scratch, on site. The Write Stuff by NANCY ROBERTS

David Garrow’s Rising Star The Making of Barack Obama

“He was always happy.” “He always had a big smile.” “He always had a grin on his face.” I’m trying to figure out what writer Garrow feels is so important about his interview subjects recalling Barack Obama as a young man with a constant smile on his face. On the one hand, it establishes him as a happy, cheerful individual. On the other, it makes the smile seem a mask adopted for public display. I’m still not one hundred percent confident which it is, or if it’s simply a fact of the transcription. Given Garrow’s bona fides as a writer, though, it’s hard to believe he would do something so obvious accidentally. This would be a good time to go into Garrow’s credentials, because it’s critical to his ultimate take on the subject of Barack Obama. Garrow is a respected historian and NY Time best-selling author who has taken a particular interest in civil rights era and figures. He won a Pulitzer Prize for his 1986 “Bearing the Cross: Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.” What that all means is simple: Garrow is not a partisan hack. Now, on my part, a reminder to my readers: way back in 2007, I read and reviewed the first Obama autobiography, written at the somewhat unsettling age of 33: “Dreams From My Father.” My conclusion in that reading was that Obama was even then calculating higher(est) political life, and had decided that his best option was to reflect back to each person what that person wanted to see in his friendly, affable face.

David Garrow, ever the historian, does not limit his story to Obama, but digs into the conditions, influences and theoretical background that created the candidate, then president, we know as Barack Obama.

So when I began to read Garrow’s extensively researched, and perhaps overdocumented book (it’s very long and more than a little difficult to plow through in places), and realized that his research turned up a similar conclusion, I have to admit feeling a bit smug. Garrow, ever the historian, does not limit his story to Obama, but digs into the conditions, influences and theoretical background that created the candidate, then president, we know as Barack Obama. He begins with an examination of the purpose of the state, socio-economic theory, and politico-economic theory. One telling observation is from the writings of John McKnight, who studied service economies, and how they reduce individuals to consumers –to “need” as opposed to people. Specifically concerned about Chicago in the mid 70s to early 80s, Garrow draws from McKnight: “By 1979, McKnight had honed his analysis further. ‘A service economy needs ‘deficiency,’ ‘human problems,’ and ‘needs,’ if it is to grow … This economic need for need creates a demand for redefining conditions as deficiencies” and “the power to label people deficient and declare them in need is the basic tool of control and oppression.”

Let’s take our cues from the trees and shed our old wardrobes in favor of a fresher look. Tossing items is never an easy task, but it is certainly a rewarding one. According to Psychology Today, clutter brings excess stimuli that can overwhelm our brains and add unneeded stress. Transitioning from the summer months can already come with psychological shifts and challenges. Paring down your possessions may also lighten your mental load, creating bandwidth in your life and space in your home. The first question to ask when sorting through your closet is ‘Did I wear this last season?’ It may seem trivial, but I have kept many items that I found hidden thinking that I’d of course wear them “this time around.” If you’ve lived without that item for more than a year not noticing its absence, it’s probably something you can live without. In her book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing,” Marie Kondo outlines OPEN TUESDAY – SATURDAY another very important question to consider when sorting through your closet: Does this Not Your Average Antique Store! item bring me joy? If it doesn’t make you smile, it’s time to toss. My one exception to this rule is if it is a wardrobe staple. on-hand for business occasions. From there, decide if the joy stems from sentimentality or functionality. Ideally, clothing falls into both categories. Oftentimes it’s good to have a mix. However if something is purely sentimental, you may want to further reflect on its place in your closet. These items may bring joy, but again, a closet full of clothes unworn will do little to alleviate feelings of stress. A wedding dress or graduation gown obviously aren’t to be thrown out, but perhaps moving these items to a safe place in storage will help your closet maintain its proper use. This will ensure that finding an outfit each morning is an easier, more peaceful process. Once you’ve created a pile of things to get rid off, consider giving pieces directly to people you know will get use out of them. One of my favorite things to do is to swap clothes with friends. It feels like you’re getting something brand new, however it saves money and prevents waste. Be careful in the process not to accumulate just as much as you just cleared out, but allow yourself to indulge in a few items to satiate your “need” for new. Exercise & Fitness by JENNIFER NASTASI GUZELAK

The Mind-Muscle Connection Body is mind and mind is body. To some they are considered one and the same. I amongst many other fitness professionals happen to believe that the mind-body connection is one of the most important aspects of training. You simply cannot achieve success and a better level of physical conditioning without a functional harmonious relationship between the two. We’ve all heard the motto “mind over matter.” Did you know that it can help you get the most out of your workouts? Many fitness professionals believe that by thinking about your muscles moving your body through an exercise, you can help them work more effectively and efficiently. So in theory, if you focus on the muscles that you’re working, you will get better results. Though many of us think of exercise as a form of physical training, it’s actually very much a mental discipline. It’s all about training the mind to use the body in a progressive and more productive way. Once we’ve mastered this, we will have the ability to excel in all realms of training. Did you know that everything your muscles do or don’t do in regards to regulating muscle movement and strength depends on the instructions it receives from your brain? The mind, or your brain, is connected to your spinal cord which then branches Burgers, Wings, Pizza And Full Dinner Menu! out into your peripheral nervous system through all of the nerves in your body. These nerves are then attached to your muscles which respond to the signals they receive from your brain. So basiBREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER cally, muscles are a pupTuesday through Sunday pet of the nervous system and a muscle that does not have nerves regulating it is essentially useless in terms of force production. Remarkably, the brain can regulate strength ONLY without you ever moving a single muscle. signals. This translates to more muscle engagement, likely by either recruiting more muscle fibers or getting the fibers to work quicker and more efficiently. I see it like this. There’s no harm that can come out of it, so why not give it a try! Here’s another way to look at it. If you’re actively focusing on the muscles you’re trying to engage during an exercise, you’ll have better form. Better form will lead to better results. Who wouldn’t want more out of their gym time! So the next time you’re doing a bicep curl, imagine the bicep muscle contracting and lengthening as you lift the weight up and down. It can’t hurt, right? Think about this for a minute. When you focus on the muscles that you’re using,

you become more in tune with what your body is doing. When you’re at the gym, you can easily tell who is focused on an exercise they’re doing and who is not. You see a tremendous difference in performance. They’re in the zone! It’s kind of like a form of meditation. There is a simple technique I use with some of my clients during our sessions to improve their mind-muscle connection. I have them get their body in the optimal position for an exercise. For instance, when doing a plank they would position their elbows, feet, and head where they need to be. Once they’re in the correct position I have them tense up all of the muscles I want them to engage throughout the exercise. Believe it or not, most of us are used to tensing up our muscles in reaction to the resistance of an exercise. By learning to actively tense the muscles, they will have better control over where the tension is in their body and their workout will be much more effective. Once all of this is understood and practiced, I have them then apply the resistance of the exercise. When doing a plank this means pushing their body just off the floor with the elbows so gravity is pulling down on the whole body. When this happens the tension of the exercise already flows through the muscles in much the same way it would have prior to applying the resistance. Now they can work the muscles more effectively and efficiently.

In the end, everything you want to accomplish in your training comes down to how you use your muscles and everything about using your muscles comes down to how your mind relates to and can use them. Your muscles will do whatever your mind tells it to do. It’s training the mind that’s the hard part. Are you ready to put the mind-muscle connection into practice? A mental workout doesn’t top an actual workout, but it definitely has its benefits! It doesn’t take any extra time or physical effort to simply channel your thoughts, so you have nothing to lose and only potential strength to gain. Remember that fitness of mind and body belong together, and that exercise is very narrowly defined in our society. So redefine exercise as any activity that reduces stress and connects your mind and body. You’ll be more likely to continue your exercise plan and achieve the success you’re looking for. Good luck to you! I have been a personal trainer for over seventeen years and I absolutely love what I do. I honestly feel that I have one of the best jobs out there! The most rewarding part of my profession is helping one of my clients succeed at reaching their personal fitness goals. Making a difference in someone’s life makes it all worthwhile. I am currently certified by the National Sports Conditioning Association, Apex Fitness Group, and the International Sports Science Association.

Brew Time by GLORIA AVILES-RAKOWSKY

Take Me Out to the Brewfest! On Friday, September 22, autumn officially begins in the Northern Hemisphere. As Central New Yorkers well know, the autumn chill starts way before then. Whether you’re a craft beer aficionado, a newbie, or someone who just likes to have a great time, then you’ll want to greet the new season on Saturday the 23rd at the Ballpark Brewfest, held at the NBT Stadium from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., rain or shine. I recently spoke with Jason Smorol, General Manager of the Syracuse Chiefs to find out more about this upcoming event. Gloria Aviles-Rakowsky: When did the Ballpark Brewfest start? Jason Smorol: I believe there were brewfests in 2012 and 2013; we took a break in 2014 and the Ballpark Brewfest was reimagined in 2015. This year will be our third. GA: How did the idea for it come about? JS: After the first brewfests, the Chiefs took it over in 2013. After some growing pains, the Board of Directors made changes to better promote and reimagine the event. We worked with our partners, beer distributors and people like Fred Matt from Saranac to make sure we did it right. The 2015 Ballpark Brewfest was a success, and the 2016 was even better. GA: How is the brewfest celebrated and what sets it apart from the others? JS: The location and the commitment to really be about the craft brew expe-

This brewfest is for everyone, from the everyday beer drinker who’s looking to try some more brews to see what he or she likes to the hard-core craft beer enthusiast. We will have rare beers as well as some selections new to the market. Our brewfest is celebrated at a unique location —our stadium— that gives us certain advantages. We’re centrally located so it’s easy to get to; we have free parking; and the ability to go rain or shine. JS: We work exclusively with Onondaga Beverage. They are a wonderful partner and really make the event special. We have a great relationship and history with the West End Brewery, the Matt family who brings an extensive range of brews from Saranac. We also reach out to local independent brewers and invite them to the event. Pete Kirkgasser from the Eastwood Brewery got on board last year and will be back again this year. David Garrow’s Rising Star The Making of Barack Obama continued from pg 25

With this in mind, Garrow launches into a deep examination of the forces behind Chicago’s extreme fall from grace as it lost industry and jobs, became increasingly segregated, and as the people were used by the various (if you’ll bear with the term) predators on their needs, from government agencies, to political organizations, to churches —particularly in the very hard-hit black community. As the organizers struggle to find their feet, they seek a representative who can bring the people together. A forceful African American associate pastor from a Catholic Church finally enunciates the problem: “’The priest … said, ‘I don’t know where you’re looking, but there’s got to be somebody out there who looks like us and thinks like us and understands our needs. So wherever you’ve been looking, you go back and look again.’” (Emphasis added) Having set the table, Garrow jumps back in time to Barack Obama, Senior, 25, a married man with a child and a baby on the way, embarking for the United States from Kenya. By 1960, the charming, forceful, flirtatious and apparently incipient alcoholic is making his presence known in Honolulu, HI, where he is studying. Obama’s mother, Stanley Ann Dunham’s, story is somewhat more ordinary, though by all accounts her father was somewhat unreliable and Stanley Ann seems to be a political romantic. Now Garrow has set the stage for Stanley Ann and Obama, Sr., to meet, get pregnant, and ultimately, marry. It’s about this point many readers will wonder “when are we going to get to Barack Obama?” While I wish Garrow had drawn his lines a bit more directly (you have to simply ride along and trust that he’s going somewhere with his exhaustive research and detail), when he finally begins to knit all the threads together, you understand the elements that contributed to the character —or perhaps, hidden character— of Obama. By the time the child Obama is on the scene, daddy is no longer a part of the little family; young Obama spends time in Indonesia raised by a step-father; his

mother’s political leanings are clear. But before he leaves this part of the story, Garrow thoroughly dismisses the myth of Obama, Senior: according the evidence, he was not only an active alcoholic and (by American standards) a bigamist, but he also lied officially about his degrees and other academic achievements and was ultimately dismissed from Harvard - and sent home in disgrace. When we really get to know Obama, Jr., he is living with his mother and more or less adoptive father, “Lolo” Soetoro. “His first grade teacher there,” writes Garcontinued on pg 40

David Garrow’s Rising Star The Making of Barack Obama continued from pg 40

row, “Israella Darmawan, decades later told credulous reporters, ‘He wrote an essay titled I Want to Become President, during that spring of 1968, prior to his seventh birthday. She also told journalists that Barry Soetoro (as he was known) struggled greatly to learn Indonesian; in contrast, Obama later boasted that ‘it had taken me less than six months to learn Indonesia’s language, its customs, and its legends.’” Again, Garrow is setting a stage, this time for discrepancies: “Obama’s recollection of his realization that he is black, as he, as he tells it, at eight, sees an article in LOOK Magazine that mark “a turning point, “a transformation in the life story that marks a considerable shift in self-understanding” and in “his racial identity development.” The article was about a black person who has undergone a series of skin-bleaching treatments to try to have white skin. The problem is, the article did not exist in that, or any magazine that could be found from that era. Next, we get a very detailed account of Barack Obama’s years at Punahou, in Hawaii (the now famous private school his grandparents sent him to), Occidental (Oxy) College in California, Columbia, and Harvard. Here the big news is his friendship with the man identified as Frank Marshall, an older black man who deeply influences young Barry’s politics (Marshall was a Communist), his hardpartying ways (with marijuana and cocaine), and an account of his friendship with political radical student Hasan Chandoo that Hasan’s girlfriend at the time describes as “an affectionate friendship,” one that “wasn’t hampered by masculinity issues. They were open with each other, affectionate with each other.” His teacher’s remember him as not very much into reading, well-spoken, but “not a very committed student.” Finally, we wrap back around to the first chapter —the lead up to Obama getting the community organizing gig in Chicago— but the book doesn’t end there. It now heads off into the political career of the man who would become the 44th President of the US.

Connie Trovato

Reaction to the book were, predictably, mixed: it was both praised and damned. If you were on the fence, you walk away with a portrait of a modern day president: complex, driven, charming, and ultimately unknowable.

Reaction to the book were, predictably, mixed: it was both praised and damned. For the reader, if you loved Obama going in, you were likely offended by Garrow’s inclusion of anything less than hagiographic. If you disliked him, there was much to pounce upon with that “aha!” reaction, while still having to sniff at the man’s obvious charisma and sheer clear-sighted ambition. If you were on the fence, you walk away with a portrait of a modern day president: complex, driven, charming, and ultimately unknowable. I think I said something similar after reading his autobiography.

Netflix’s Ozark Within the pantheon of great debut seasons, there aren’t many that can compare to the new Netflix series, OZARK. Starring the incredible Jason Bateman as a money launderer who will go to any lengths necessary in order to keep his family safe, the atmospheric production boasts an impeccable ensemble cast, dark humor, and a number of unexpected thrills to produce an antihero for the ages. Marty Byrd (Bateman) is a family man with an eye for numbers. He and his partner, Bruce (Josh Randall) run a successful consulting firm, but they certainly aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty. Though the infidelity of his wife Wendy (Laura Linney) is a pressing concern, within minutes of the pilot episode, his domestic quandary takes a backseat to a much more dire situation. Without his knowledge, Bruce and one of their business associates had OZARK- A been skimming funds from their employer. This would be a no-no in virtually any circumstance, but when you’re dealing with the cartel, it becomes infinitely less advisable. Before Marty can even comprehend what is happening, his boss, the ruthless Del (Esai Morales), murders everyone involved with the deception. With a gun pointed to his face, and the promise of a long nap in a vat of acid, Marty assures Del that he has a business opportunity in Ozark, Missouri. He swears that he can clean $500 million in 5 years. Marty’s lofty proclamation is met with skepticism, but the crime lord reluctantly agrees to let him try. Once Marty and his family arrive in Ozark, he soon discovers that cleaning the money continued on pg 42

Fall Pork Chops with Apples Recipe by Amanda • thechunkychef.com

Ingredients:

Remove pork chops to a plate.

2 Tbsp olive oil divided 3-4 oz bone-in pork chops whatever with comfortably fit in your pan

In a small mixing bowl, whisk together chicken stock and mustard, set aside.

Kosher salt and black pepper to taste 3/4 cup low sodium chicken stock 1 tsp Dijon mustard or whole-grain Dijon 1 Tbsp fresh sage chopped 1 1/2 tsp fresh rosemary chopped 1/2 tsp fresh thyme chopped 1/2 tsp kosher salt 1/4 tsp black pepper 2 medium apples thinly sliced (I used Gala) 1 small red onion thinly sliced

Directions: Season both sides of pork chops with kosher salt and black pepper. Add 1 Tbsp olive oil to large heavy bottomed pan (or skillet), and heat over MED-HIGH heat. Add pork chops to pan, leaving at least an inch between the chops to ensure even cooking and browning. Sear 3-5 minutes per side, or until pork chops are mostly done. Chops will continue cooking in the sauce later.

Add remaining 1 Tbsp oil to the pan, then add apples and onions. Cook 4 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season with salt, pepper, sage, rosemary, and thyme. Stir to combine. Pour in stock mixture, using a wooden spoon to gently scrape the bottom of the pan to release any brown bits (those are full of great flavor). Slide pork chops back into the pan, nestling them down in between the apples. Netflix’s Ozark continued from pg 41 will not be nearly as easy as he expected. While business opportunities are plentiful, the inhabitants of the vacation town aren’t easily persuaded. They don’t like outsiders, and they aren’t nearly as dumb as their outward appearances and actions suggest. While Marty doesn’t realize that a tortured FBI agent Roy Petty (Jason Butler Harner) has set up shop in the local motel, he also fails to grasp how intensely people like Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner) and Jacob Snell (the excellent Peter Mullan) are driven by unrelenting greed. There have been fans and critics alike who have made the knee-jerk comparison of OZARK to BREAKING BAD, and there certainly are similarities between the two. The tone of the Netflix production, like BREAKING BAD, is fueled by brisk and constant intensity peppered with savagely dark humor. It features a likable lead who, as awful and unforgivable as his actions may be, is doing so in the name of his family. He is a protagonist that would be detested in the real world, yet within the confines of his fictional universe, the audience extends a certain feeling of empathy even though we know we shouldn’t. In addition, like BAD, the performances by the supporting cast are superb. Linney, who shines in every production she is a part of, is just as deceitful as her husband, yet much stronger than Skyler White ever was. Teens Sofia Hubliitz and Skylar Gaertner allow their characters to become central figures in the drama, as opposed to letting their existence be little more than place holder’s for the larger story. Garner, plays Ruth as a strong-willed, intelligent, and ruthless young woman with a heart full of fury and a penchant for violence. She builds upon her strong supporting performance in THE AMERICANS and crafts a cunning character who becomes an essential entity in virtually every storyline. And, while each performance listed is spectacular, it is Bateman who carries the brunt of the expectations and promise that OZARK has to offer. Part smooth talking charmer, part unscrupulous businessman, he is a flawed man with more demons than he knows what to do with. Bateman balances this juggling act with excellent precision, exhibiting a range that wasn’t surprising, but entirely welcome. What separates Marty from his de-facto doppelganger Walter White, is the fact that he does not hide his nefarious activities from his family. Wendy knows what he is up to

Boasting stunning production design, quality writing, expert performances, and outstanding direction there is every reason to believe that Neflix has an instant classic on its hands. from the very beginning, and before long, the kids do as well. Their criminal enterprise is a family affair, which alleviates much of the mystery that Walt had to keep at bay. I loved this fact about OZARK, and helped it craft its own interesting niche. As audiences, because of series such as THE SHIELD, THE SOPRANOS, BREAKING BAD, and THE AMERICANS, we have grown to love flawed, questionable anti-heroes who don’t even bother toeing the line of good and evil. What these series, and now OZARK, find a way to do, is make you feel like you are experiencing these feelings for the very first time. More importantly, they provide thrills, illicit gasps and make you laugh. They force you to question your own moral fortitude, and the lengths in which you would go to protect those that you love. OZARK succeeds in these departments in every single episode, and in virtually every scene. Boasting stunning production design, quality writing, expert performances, and outstanding direction (Bateman himself was at the helm of 4 of the 10 episodes) there is every reason to believe that Neflix has an instant classic on its hands.
