The Avengers: Infinity War

Not just your average bad guy... Thanos(Josh Brolin) is a contemplative, philosophical, and complicated killer

It’s pretty hilarious to think that 6 short years ago, the biggest question facing the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was whether or not the Avengers could share the screen together to form a cohesive, entertaining narrative. Now, as one of the most popular and lucrative franchises in cinematic history, “Avengers” has become synonymous with success. With Marvel constantly expanding, more and more characters are being introduced, and the filmmakers are forced to incorporate all of them. The most recent convergence of all of the varying plotlines was AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, and despite my many reservations and growing sense of

Infinity War brings together 40 characters to form a gripping story that boasts the best of what Marvel has to offer.

superhero fatigue, the film was a rollicking, action-packed, often hilarious and surprisingly emotional blockbuster. Picking up immediately where the post-credits scene in THOR: RAGNAROK left off, the deadly Thanos (Josh Brolin) has boarded a ship carrying Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), Heimdall (Idris Elba) and the remaining living inhabitants of Asgard. The murderous ruler is on a quest to collect all 5 of the infinity stones so he can annihilate half of the galaxy’s inhabitants. If you think, after reading that last sentence, that a major plotline in this installment

of AVENGERS is genocide, then I’ve got news for you … You are absolutely correct. And, as a result, absolutely no one on the screen is safe. If you haven’t seen INFINITY WAR yet, and have somehow avoided spoilers, then consider yourself lucky. Though most films in the genre are fairly predictable, the same cannot be said for this chapter. To say much more would give away what you’ve successfully steered clear of, and I’m not here to burst that bubble. Just keep in mind, with so many characters involved in a litany of bombastic action sequences, there is plenty of brutality along the way. These sequences are both intense and awe-inspiring, with many of the most recognizable names and faces in the marvel catalogue sharing the screen and working together to defeat a common foe. Aside from the Avengers who have been around since the first film, like Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor, Captain America (Chris Evans), The Marvel Cast combines the originals from the first film like Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and Black Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Banner, and Widow with Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Spider-Man, Scarlet Witch and more Loki, there are plenty of others who have now joined their illustrious ranks. Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Spider-Man (Tom Holland), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olson) and Vision (Paul Bettany) are now in the mix, as are the Guardians of the Galaxy (Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, David Bautista, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel.) Each one of these entities brings something unique to the table, and are utilized well. I was absolutely shocked that directors Anthony and Joe Russo, along with screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely were able to bring 40 characters together to form a gripping story that boasted the best of what Marvel has to offer. Of all of the engaging characters in INFINITY WAR, it is Brolin as Thanos that really binds the whole production together. Sure, the moments with Iron Man and Spider-Man are great, and the dynamic between Hemsworth and Pratt alone is worth the price of admission, but Thanos is the key to INFINITY WAR. Don’t let the purple skin and massive frame fool you, he is a contemplative, philosophical, and complicated killer. Calm and collected in the face of any situation, Brolin helps instill an air of fear and discomfort without coming off as cartoonish. This, perhaps, is the most unexpected aspect of the entire film. Upon first glance, he gives the impression of your typical, over-thetop badguy, yet he is the most complex individual on the screen. As flabbergasted as I am to admit, the future of Marvel seems extremely promising. Thanks to a mind-blowing finale, there are more questions than answers as to the direction of the Universe. This lends to an air of excitement that, for me, has been lacking for a while, and ensures that the AVENGERS are set to soar once again. If you missed this film, or any movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe on the big screen, Regal Cinemas at Destiny USA will be showing each installment in IMAX beginning on August 30, and ending on September 6, in honor of the 10th anniversary of the MCU. The viewing schedule is available online at Thor (Chris Hemsworth) www.REGmovies.com

Sounds Of Syracuse

Richie Melito Top Gun I was on standby to play a song with Irv at an open-jam. I had just written an article on him for this column and went down to check him out, so I was looking forward to jamming with him. “You’re up, get your guitar,” the hostess told me. So I did, and walked onto the stage. Irv had evaporated, and I was standing there looking at this other guitar player. Never saw him before. Didn’t know him. We introduced ourselves, shook hands, and I searched my memory for the easiest song I could think of playing, because I wasn’t sure about what I had just gotten myself into. We played “Feeling Alright.” Yikes! My new friend, Richie, started kicking the crap out of the song, and I found myself thinking, “this is my new lead guitar player.” We became friends on that take, pretty much instantly. “Whaddya’wanna play next?” he said. Since that time we’ve played regularly in the Salt City Chill and in other smaller ensembles together, along with plenty of social time which usually involves our ladies, dinner, and sipping fine spirits from a connoisseurs perspective. Not that we’re true connoisseurs or anything, but we have a lot of fun pretending. Music is, however, something Richie Melito qualifies as a true connoisseur. Not only do I have the pleasure and privilege of playing songs and working together, but, I also have the

This guy has been around the block for real. You see him once and you realize you are in the company of a musician who dedicates most every part of his life and being into the art and science of music. I see him drop jaws most every Tuesday night at Limp Lizard in Liverpool just by messing around in a casual open jam (one of the best open-jams in the city by the way). I see him drop jaws when I’m standing a foot away from him on stage. And you should see him play, as well. A true bic-flicking player’s player. Right here, in your city. And not only that, he’s a modest, funny, very intelligent and interesting person. One of the hallmarks—I’ve learned over the years—of a true time-tested musician, is that they get over the whole “look at me I’m a rockstar” thing. There’s no need to do that anymore when you’ve lived your whole life as the real deal, hard-working musician. He took a little time with me to talk about his path in music. Chuck Schiele: Hey Richie. Thanks for doing this. Richie Melito: Thanks Chuck. This is kinda fun.... CS: How long have you been playing music? How did you become a musician? RM: I hate to give away my age, but I’ve been playing in bands since 1967. I made $2.50 at my first “gig”. With regard to how I became a musician, I’d dreamt about it for as long as I remember and my parents were both incredibly supportive. CS: What instruments do you play? RM: Currently, I play guitar and bass. I started as a drummer in my teens and just wanted a more melodic outlet. I also dabbled on trumpet for quite a few years—the operative word being “dabble”. CS: How would you characterize your music?

I’ve been referred to as the “guitar whore of Syracuse”, a title I wear proudly. I’m a member of Salt City Chill. Perhaps you’ve heard of them. I’m a member of Brownskin Band. I’m part of the house band hosting Tuesday night open mic at Limp Lizard Liverpool. In the years prior to my arrival in Syracuse (2010), I did the The view at Red Rocks road band thing, fifty weeks a year for ten years, starting in the mid70s. I settled in Florida in the mid-80s, playing in a house band that became a 9-piece corporate convention band. I played with the house band at BB King`s Blues Club in Orlando for two and a half years. The Chef & The Cook Picture this: You are sitting on a cozy brick patio that has been warmed by the sun while you watch the calm river flowing by and when you listen closely you can hear the water gently lapping the shore. As you feel the days residual sunshine on your face you placidly watch the day turn into twilight. A friendly server, who compliments the experience, brings you an ice cold hand crafted cocktail that you enjoy while taking in the beauty of your surroundings and the peacefulness that the evening has to offer. Maybe you are on a first date; maybe it’s your first date night out in a long time; perhaps you are catching up with a group of old friends; or taking a moment to reconnect with a sibling that you talk to every day but rarely have a chance to actually sit down with and relax. This milieu has encouraged a feeling of peace and togetherness so when you decide on your order you are inspired to share. As the sky fades into shade of purple, your meal arrives. The farm to table fresh cuisine you ordered is plated in a manner that resembles artwork; almost too beautiful to be disturbed by consuming it. This feeling quickly dissipates as you are overwhelmed by the intoxicating smell emanating from the dish. As you take your first bite your

Lastly we had a dish of Veal Osso Buco; a generous portion of veal served in a flavorful hunter sauce with caramelized onions, and roasted tomatoes with homemade gnocchi. Every single bite of this dish offered a unique yet complementary flavor creating a culinary symphony! We ended our meal with what I would like to call “The Chef & The Cook Challenge,” these were two The Veal Osso Buco unique servings of crème brûlée that were served in tea cups and caramelized at our table. The Cook was represented by the traditional vanilla custard and it was familiar, light and sweet. Exercise & Fitness by Jennifer Nastasi Guzelak

Give it a Rest: It’s OK to Skip Your Workout Give it a rest! It’s okay to skip your workout! Years of research and experience have led to a surprising new consensus among trainers, coaches and athletes, best summed up as “Not so fast.” It turns out that one of the best things you can do for your next athletic ambition is to take some downtime, keep workouts short, and even skip the gym altogether. Many fitness junkies find the idea of taking a day off as absurd! It can only mean one thing – a loss of all gains. While it may feel counter-intuitive to take regular days off from the gym, taking a break will actually help you achieve your ultimate goal. So, if you work out regularly, give yourself permission to take at least one to two days off each week to give your body a well-deserved break.

The American College of Sports Medicine and the American Heart Association recommend that adults under age 65 aim for 30 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic

exercise five days per week or 20 minutes of vigorous intensity aerobic exercise three days per week. Strength training is recommended at least twice per week to target all muscle groups. Those new to fitness should increase the duration and intensity of their workouts slowly to prevent injury and burnout. Rest days depend on the type of athlete you are. Mind and body athletes (think Pilates and yoga) may want to take a day off altogether, whereas bodybuilders may only want to take a day off from lifting, but still do a little cardio. It also depends on your level of fitness. If you’re just now starting out in the fitness world, your rest day should

probably be a real rest day in which you do no activity at all. How should you eat on a rest day? I tell my clients to “eat according to their activity level.” This means use common sense! Food is fuel, so you obviously don’t need to eat as many calories on a rest day as you would on a day that you’re hitting the gym.

Importance of Rest and Recovery

Strength and endurance gains actually happen during recovery, not in the gym. To understand how this works, it helps to know a core truth about all athletic training. We don’t actually get fitter at the gym, on the road, or in the pool. What we really do while training is apply a stimulus that elevates our heart rate, breaks down muscle fibers, causes the adrenal glands to secrete the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol and generally tells our body that the status quo won’t cut it anymore. Allowing your body time to recover between workouts helps your muscles repair damage sustained during exercise to prepare for the next workout. The “getting fitter” part, the body’s response to that stimulus, comes afterward. While you eat and rest, the body gets to work Rest days depend on the type of athlete you are. Mind and body athletes (think Pilates and repairing tissue damage, strengthening the heart and other yoga) may want to take a day off altogether, whereas bodybuilders may only want to take a day muscles, restoring depleted fuel reserves and getting better at off from lifting, but still do a little cardio. transporting oxygen throughout the body, making itself a little more efficient and stronger than before. By stressing the body to stimulate change, and then letting it recover, we stack up these little adaptations one on top of the other until we find ourselves fit enough to run a 10 K, lift a heavier weight, or play the best basketball game of our life.

Make the Most of Your Time Off

Taking a long break doesn’t mean you have to become a couch potato. You don’t want to fall completely off the wagon. You can of course continue to stay busy with “life” and with your normal daily activities. If you’re a cyclist or runner, for example, learn proper squat form and do a little winter strength training to fortify yourself against injury. If obstacle racing happens to be your thing, join a mixed-martial-arts gym for a couple of months, getting that same full-body experience, but in a different format. If you play basketball or tennis, dabble in mountain biking to keep the heart and lungs working, while giving the joints a break. continued on pg 15

My Mind To Yours

by debra Merryweather

The Anatomy of Mental Health We feel things with our bodies. The body connects to the brain. Our conscious minds develop out of our body-brain connections. Neurons that fire together wire together, and the present builds on the past. Scientists posit that jumping genes position themselves into DNA to create uniqueness and individuality in both maize and the human brain. Human history records pendulum swings between norms requiring sameness and groupthink, and respect for complexity and diversity, while, inside our skulls, our three-pound brains control the nervous responses we need to keep us safe and alive. Responses that work well in one situation might be problematic in another. All behavior is learned. Biology, physics and neuroscience suggest that our brains require 20% of our total caloric energy to fuel 2% of the brain’s 100 billion (give or take) total neurons at any one time. If our caloric intake falls below the levels needed to keep that 2% of our neurons firing, we faint. If more than 2% of our 100 billion neurons sent signals at once, and they won’t, our brains would overheat. Self-regulation requires healthy brain function, and in terms of dealing with life’s challenges, the ability to regulate one’s own thoughts and emotions is an important component of mental health. How do we learn to self-regulate? Molecular biologist Dr. John Medina, author of Brain Rules, states, “the human brain can only hold about seven pieces of information for less than 30 seconds” and to learn any information or skill, we need to “repeat to remember.” According to Dr. Medina, newborns start to imitate their parents’ or other caregiver/attachment figures’ facial expressions within hours after birth. The 2017 brain science journal Cerebrum published an article that linked studies of lab animal behavior and the observed behavior of young children. Both young rats and young children look to attachment figures, generally parents, for visual cues as to how they themselves should react to whatever is going on. In groups, amid mixed signals or danger, children often look to the behavior of the nearest most dominant authorities or attachment figures and at some point, dominant peers

become the authority figures. Dominance doesn’t always reflect mental health. The cerebral cortex, the gray matter that constitutes about 22% of total brain tissue, sorts and stores what we learn unassisted by the higher-executive function prefrontal cortex, which doesn’t mature until our twenties. While the development of the pre-frontal cortex means our brains are mature, our higher decision making will still reflect the thought patterns we’ve developed growing up. Ideally, we keep learning. Neuroscience suggests that around two years of age, “the terrible twos,” children’s brains undergo a neuronal growth spurt during which children start to test their limits. Another neuronal growth spurt coincides with puberty, the stage when, through neurochemical and hormone

The Anatomy of Mental Health continued from pg 13 release, nature signals young people to grow up and pair up. How families, cultures and societies meet and greet the growth spurts of their young people affects how those young people come to feel about themselves. Mental health has sometimes been measured by conformity to community norms some of which aren’t so nurturing. Eighteen percent of American adults and eight percent of American children suffer from anxiety disorders manifesting in neurological and digestive ills, heart pounding panic, and hyperactivity. Fidgety children have often found themselves pressured to sit still when, in fact, physical movement improves oxygen circulation throughout the body while relieving pent up stress. Brain Rules suggests evolution equipped the human body to walk twelve miles a day, not to sit quietly for hours at a time and educational Eighteen percent of American adults and eight percent of American research here and abroad children suffer from anxiety disorders manifesting in neurological and finds that physical movedigestive ills, heart pounding panic, and hyperactivity. ment and aerobic exercise improve student performance in school. Aerobic exercise is also suggested for those suffering from depression and anxiety. As early as the 1920’s, psychiatrists and former mental patients were trying to get Americans to think about mental health from a wholistic mindbody perspective. Such thinking didn’t quite take root in the decade which roared toward the Great Depression bringing, variously, women’s suffrage, the proliferation of motor cars and telephones, a Supreme Court decision approving the forced sterilization of young single mothers, and the Prohibition which led to bathtub gin. Nearly a century later, amid today’s social concerns, the forces of enlightenment are trying to raise mental health awareness again. This September, New York State’s public schools will implement a mental health curriculum. A 79 page document, Mental Health Education Literacy in Schools: Linking to a Continuum of Well-Being, is available on the NYS Department of Education Website. The website provides links to background information including a 2017 Mental Health Association of New York white paper that addresses the history and intent of teaching mental health in public schools. The curriculum for kindergarten through second grade introduces concepts such as personal space and boundaries, self-care, mindfulness, empathy, and “understanding the meaning of forgiveness …” Much current self-help, therapy and spiritual guidance for adults touches on what the new curriculum will seek to impart to young children. New York’s DOE website quotes the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): “focusing on establishing healthy behaviors during childhood is more effective than trying to change unhealthy behaviors during adulthood.” Information about New York’s new curriculum is available at: www.nysed.gov/ curriculum-instruction/mental-health School is always in session.

Give it a Rest: It’s OK to Skip Your Workout continued from pg 12 Not only will this give your body some much needed rest, it will also reinforce how much you love it, which will keep that motivation high.

Signs of Overtraining

The amount of exercise that causes overtraining varies from person to person. A seasoned athlete may be able to hit the gym for two hours six days a week as part of a regular training program, but this level of exercise would quickly leave most people burned out or injured. Signs of overtraining include exhaustion and fatigue, insomnia, moodiness, decreased performance, lack of appetite and muscle soreness. Rest is crucial to improving your fitness and athletic performance, and if you feel like you may be overtraining, it’s wise to cut back on the time you spend at the gym. Overtraining makes you more susceptible to illness and overuse injuries, which may prevent you from hitting the gym for weeks or even months. While overtrained athletes may require months of rest, average gym patrons typically need to take more days off per week and focus on shorter, easier workouts while their bodies recover.

Overtraining makes you more susceptible to illness and overuse in injuries

In Conclusion:

The best advice I can give you is to listen to your body. Set aside your gym and sports routines once or twice a week, precisely so you can return stronger than ever. If you are sick, exhausted, injured, or exceptionally sore or fatigued, you may need to stay out of the gym longer. So, take a break! Take this time to reflect on how far you’ve already come and acknowledge and be grateful for your body, willpower and dedication. Trust me, your body will Thank You! Good luck to you. I have been a personal trainer for over seventeen years and I absolutely love what I do. I honestly feel that I have one of the best jobs out there! 8 Must-Haves to Make Your Dorm Room Feel Homey Changing the curtains may require a minimal effort but would have a significant impact. Just by adding different window treatments, the entire room will look brand new. Curtains also have multiple uses such as they are useful if you wanted to darken the room and make your daytime sleep better. They can block the sun rays coming and make your sleep more restful. Moreover, they come in different varieties like long curtains that puddle graciously on the floor and help in maintaining room temperature. Choose one that is most impressive and suitable for your needs.

Mood Lighting

To make your dorm room atmosphere feel homey, you need to have proper control over the ambiance of the room. Adding string lights, desk lamps, pendant lamps, and floor lamps are all a good idea to improve the lighting. Multiple floor lamps can help omit the need of overhead lights while string lights crossed over the ceiling will replicate the night sky.

Stylish Armchair

A more spacious room gives you a choice to add furniture and create an inviting space around you. An armchair is the best option to serve both function and style. Chairs like barrel or wingback come with a wide seat and provide enough support to maintain a good posture while you do homework, read a book, or curl up to relax.

Versatile Utility Cart

The clutter can make your small room feel and look smaller. A utility cart works as a handy storage solution in this situation for all the clutter. It will help you organize everything such as frequently used items, toiletries,

Decorating your dorm room is a great way to make your space feel more like home food, and books. With a utility cart, you can store printer and other different school supplies as well.

Decorative Throw Pillows

Throw pillows can bring the right balance and visual interest to your home décor. Consider adding a backrest pillow as it gives exceptional support to your body while studying in the bed, relaxing, or watching TV.

Personal Pictures

Most of us bring photos of our loved ones like family, friends, and pets with us to college. Displaying them correctly would give your dorm room a pleasant look. You can make a photo collage and buy some cheap and cute frames to make is a statement piece you love.

Dual Purpose Furniture

Invest in some multifunctional furniture as it will open up new possibilities for storage and organization. Beds that come with built-in underneath drawers would completely eradicate the need for a dresser. Since most of the dorm rooms are generally furnished with a bed, a standalone piece of furniture such as ottoman or storage bench could be your best bet. They are useful seating options that come in many different styles. You can place them along an empty wall or at the foot of your bed. In case of visitors, the extra seating will be a handy option. However, on regular days, you would have a storage option available for the things you want to keep out of sight like shoes, backpack, and more.

Cozy Rug

Utilizing a comfortable rug has various benefits. It can warm up your space, reduce noise, and add a design element that sets the tone for the whole area. A rug on the floor is also an excellent option for extra seating without worrying about chairs. So, opt for a rug that is resilient and durable such as a wool rug, plush rug, and rug with synthetic fibers. Also, you don’t need to spend a fortune when buying a rug that fits in your room and ties the décor well.

B-VILLE’S BEST SPORTS BAR!

Computers & the Web by Nancy Roberts

1 Village Blvd. Baldwinsville NY 13027

AI – Yi Yi! Admit it – you’ve heard that Asia is now manufacturing “dolls” that will obey your commands. For about $10K —and evidently a waiting list— it’s yours. And not only will the dolls obey, but they will “feel,” and express a range of emotions supposedly true to life. Creepy factor aside, though, our AI quotient has ramped up a lot in recent years, bringing with it all those problems and questions Sci-Fi writers imagined way back when I was a kid just getting hooked on it. One of the first such stories I vividly recall reading (though certainly not the first to consider the question) was the Philip K. Dick classic novella, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? published in 1968 and later retitled Blade Runner: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? It seems 1968 was a big year for considering AI, because that was also the year that Stanley Kubrick released 2001: A Space Odyssey. (It was also a good year for titles with colons.) If you saw it, in the Kubrick film, HAL (one letter over from IBM in the alphabet) was the space ship’s controlling computer, who actually had insider knowledge of the mission, and became, by the end of the movie, an actual character who played a key, even heart-rending role in the drama. And in Dick’s fiction, “replicants,” or humanoid robots, have been imbued with more than just the enhanced physical and intellectual power of a human, but with feelings. One of the most important —and moving— characters in the story is a replicant whose feelings, it turns out, are as deep as, or deeper than the humans’ in the tale. And it’s hinted that perhaps more than just he is a robot, but that we’re actually seeing the story through the eyes of one who doesn’t realize that he isn’t fully human. While the aforementioned robotic “dolls” would indicate that the days of these 1968 fantasies are closer than we think, in fact we humans have been groomed for the possibility for much longer than we realize. I don’t say this in the sense of purposefully prepared, but more like we have been simply accepting the increasing level of sophistication in our electronic servants, without realizing that the more we expect from them, and the more they can supply, the more we begin to interact with them on the level of not just intellect and function, but emotion and even caring. continued on pg 18

AI-Yi Yi! continued from pg 17 Take that phone in your hand – no, really, you know how you feel when it’s not right there nearby. Call it inconvenienced, or worried about where you may have left it, or call it something bordering on panic (the kind you feel when you look down and your 4 year old isn’t right next to you in the store), we have all felt that moment of loss when we look down and our little buddy —the one we decorate with special cases, the one that stores our pictures and dates and names, the one ready to play a game, take a photo, share an idea, shop, play music (and do it all without complaining even when we stop the song right in the middle)— isn’t there, just waiting for whatever it is we want to do next. I’m sure you realize that your memory for things like names, dates, movies, directions, languages, and history have all been compressed to a very limited repertoire – because, after all, your phone, laptop, or tablet all have the answers for us, so why waste the brain cells? (What are we doing with all those spare brain cells, one wonders?) And of course, we’ve all seen and laughed at the photos of people in a restaurant, supposedly sharing a meal or a drink, all staring fixedly at their phones rather than interacting. And now there is Alexa, Siri, and “Hey Google.” When Siri was first launched, I watched a small child laugh herself silly having an argument with “her.” I resisted using the function, but recently I have found that if I want to send a text or make a phone call while driving, it’s awfully easy to ask “Siri” Private Rooms Available for up to 100 People to do it. Preventive Medicine by Dr. Barry

Fiber Fiber Everywhere On my radio show recently I had to admit I made a mistake. I have had no use for oatmeal and thought people were crazy to eat it. -Tastes like cardboard unless you add demon sugar to it. But in researching about health and diet I discovered that oatmeal at least is good for one thing … Fiber … (one more thing you are not getting enough of). Fiber refers to non digestible carbohydrates and that means fiber is a form of sugar but it’s not demon sugar that I usually rail against. It’s safe sugar in fact. It is important sugar but it’s not what you are pouring on your waffles or icing your cakes with. It’s a non digestible carbohydrate. There are two forms of fiber: soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber reduces cholesterol

vegetables and grain. Many foods like oatmeal and apples have both soluble and insoluble fibers. Insufficient fiber in the diet leads to diverticulosis. This is a condition in which lack of fiber causes small outpockets to form in the colon and these can become inflamed and result in sometimes serious illness requiring hospitalization and/or surgery. We used to tell patients with diverticulosis to avoid fiber and this is another example of well meaning advice that turned out to be wrong. Fiber has been studied and higher fiber intake has been shown to slow coronary artery

The good bugs in your gut feed on this type of fiber. This type of fiber is found in oatmeal, nuts, seeds and lentils. The other type of fiber is insoluble and doesn’t get digested by you or your gut bacteria and acts to add bulk to your stool. No statin can give you results this good. Are you getting enough fiber? If you are reading this in America … probably not. Most of us get only 11-15 grams a day on average. -But you need 21-38 grams of fiber a day. Women are said to need somewhat less than men … hence the range. Another interesting fact about fiber New York State Arms Collectors Association, Inc. deficiency is that if the TM bugs in your gut are not getting enough food in the form of fiber they have to eat so they try to eat the lining of your colon … making the lining leaky … creating an inflammatory process with ramifications beyond your gut. Fiber Fiber Everywhere continued from pg 19 like propellers— will travel from the colon to the small bowel creating a host of issues referred to as SIBO: Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth syndrome. When this happens zonulin is released and interestingly this is the same chemical released when people have gluten issues. Dr. Rhonda Patrick says that fiber is the most important factor in gut health. Many fruits and vegetables are loaded with fiber. Artichokes and avocados have 10 grams of fiber. Other sources include broccoli, brussel sprouts, onions, garlic, oatmeal, and apples. I cannot in good faith recommend any breakfast cereal no matter how high the fiber content because that alone is not enough to make any cereal healthy for you. -But oatmeal, for now, gets a passing grade in the fiber department. Fiber is one more reason to eat healthy right from the start. If you are not getting enough fiber from your natural diet you can supplement fiber and psyllium husk is the most popular commercially available fiber but you can also try glucomannan a fiber sourced from the Konjac root that is supposed to absorb up to 50 times its weight with water. This acts like a gentle scrub brush as it passes through your bowels. It’s touted for its weight loss potential. The scrub brush/sponge holds onto the sugar in your guts so you absorb less of it. I wouldn’t plan my weight loss program around it but a weekly dose might help you stay healthier longer. Hopefully I got through a whole article without being too controversial but don’t worry … there is always next months column. Until then … get well … and stay well.

AI-Yi Yi! continued from pg 18 with little remorse, though the scene of HAL dying was disturbing. Human beings today find it difficult to see a robot suffer. The unsurprising fact is that, as our machine friends have become increasingly able to interact with us (and we with them) and as we have become increasingly more dependent upon them to perform functions for us (give us step by step directions to our destination, pop up a reminder for an appointment, lull us to sleep with our favorite music, adjust the temperature of house before we’re due home from work), we tend to think of them as “real” (do you talk to your computer when it’s misbehaving or not responding quickly enough?) and, in fact, let our guards down in terms of how much of our lives we commit to their care. Sooner or later, though, we will reach that predicted point of fiction at which we’ll need to consider the question that has been asked since at least Mary Shelley considered it in Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. Given the power, should we create a new sentient life form? Or is the question better put, now that we’ve done it, what follows?

I recall when Google burst on the scene as an alternative search engine – in the days of HotBot, Yahoo!, Alta Vista, and Ask Jeeves. It quickly became the preferred choice for two major reasons: it didn’t try to be anything but a search engine (so far as we knew) and the results it returned were by Nancy Roberts quite likely just what you were looking for. Undecorated with ads, and relying on an algorithm of relevance rather than pay-to-place, Google watched which links people selected given a particular search string, and then ranked that result higher, relying on that “wisdom of the crowd” to tell it what people were most likely seeking when they typed in “fly catcher.” Googled I loved the fact that with little interference I by Ken Auletta could get a simple answer to a simple search Sergy Brin Published: 2010 and move on. Googled continued from pg 22 as opinion; stations and papers as outlets for selective messaging; readers/watchers/consumers as fan-boys rather than informed citizens. Name a “news” outlet and most of us can name its political affiliation and slant, though we tend to minimize the slant of our favorites and exaggerate that of those we dislike. Even in 2009, Auletta understood the gathering storm of “who is editing this?” While never utterly pure, newsrooms did demand a certain level of “truth” and responsibility for what it printed. Since each newspaper or TV network or station owned its platform, it was liable for libel and slander. It was responsible for retracting errors, or even likely to be sued if it ran a story that was factually in wrong to the harm of the person or persons in that story. “Fact-checkers” weren’t websites intent upon proving a point with “Three Pinocchios,” but individuals tasked with examining the dates, numbers, statements and conclusions of particularly investigative stories. If a writer said “There is an increasing amount of vandalism in the XYZ neighborhood,” the fact-checker would want to see the numbers that made the writer reach that conclusion, and if it could not be shown, the line would be removed or rewritten. If the writer said “The increasing vandalism gives many reason not to move to the XYZ neighborhood,” an editor would probably say, “Get me a quote on that, or change it to ‘In this writer’s opinion, etc.’” Years ago, Auletta reported the concern of legitimate newsrooms for “who owns this content,” as well as “who is responsible for its accuracy.” Now, our morning news is more likely to be a quick run through recent posts on Facebook, or checking Tweets and newsletters from partisan sources. Facebook hasn’t been in the business of fact-checking, and, until very recently, has also not been in the business of limiting content. After all, Facebook isn’t writing your anti-dog post, you are, and Facebook has provided a means for anyone offended to be protected: block the poster. Recently, and in part due to its being investigated for sharing individual data about its users, Facebook created more stringent rules about what was considered acceptable content, and users’ posts could be reported – and the post, and the user, could be banned from the platform, temporarily, or permanently. Twitter and other social media platforms have similar systems, but the most onerous is “demonetization.” Google Ads and YouTube ads (YouTube is owned by Google, or Alphabet, its parent company), became a great way for amateur commentators and content creators to make a few dollars on the side. That “few dollars” exploded when many of the YouTube channels and other outlets that agreed to advertise garnered hundreds of thousands, even millions of viewers, and better yet, subscribers. Many people could even comfortably quit their day jobs and become “professional” online personalities. De-monetizing them meant they were cut off of the revenue generated by their content. For those individual operations (some people have created whole media “empires” with multiple personalities, merchandise, employees, studios, etc.) that relied on ad revenue to stay active, demonetization is “game over,” unless they can find people willing to subscribe via a service like Patreon that offers subscription content. De-platforming is equally devastating, particularly when done as a “Purge” as with the recent “de-platforming” of Alex Jones, a particularly intense commentator who angered the powers that be so that, in one fell swoop, he was tossed from Facebook, YouTube, and ITunes – three of the major suppliers of independently developed content. Did Auletta see all this coming? Not entirely – but he certainly was witness to the gathering might of both Google and social media in becoming our source of content, and at least some of the problems attendant on the Fourth Estate losing ground to the growing “Fifth” Estate. it was way back in 1837 when concern over its growing power added that RESTAURANT • CATERING • BANQUETS • MOTEL Interestingly, “Fourth” Estate (The Press) to the original three: The Clergy, The Nobility, and The Commoners. Fall Movie Preview The temperatures in Syracuse may still be soaring, but no matter how much we hope it will last, we know what is lurking right around the corner. The change of seasons means many things to everyone across the country, yet here in Central New York, we know that soon we will be hunkering in, and spending more time within the comfy confines of a heated room. For many of us, this means taking in quite a few movies, and below, you’ll find a few of the flicks that I am looking forward to the most. VENOM (October 5) After decades of hope and empty promises, Venom, one of Marvel’s most beloved villains, is finally getting his own stand-alone project. While we have seen iterations of him before on the big screen, most notably as portrayed by Topher Grace in SPIDER-MAN 3, he has yet to achieve the same type of success in the cinemas as he has had in the comics. The reason VENOM is one of the more intriguing releases in the coming months, is simply due to its leading man. While, in theory,

the violent, wise-talking, symbiotic villain would be a draw in any capacity, it is the fact that Tom Hardy is filling the role that makes it a must-see. Hardy has, at this point in his career, proved that he can deliver consistently phenomenal performances in any genre. From the madcap action of MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, to the simplistic drama of LOCKE (a film where he literally sits in a car from start to finish), he has become one of the most versatile and magnetic personalities in the business. With the emergence of more daring comic-book fare such as DEADPOOL and LOGAN, there is hope that Hardy and director Ruben Fleischer (ZOMBIELAND) will show flashes of the same originality and ingenuity that set these dark films apart from their typical superhero brethren. The trailer has garnered strong reactions both positive, and negative, but this can hardly be viewed as a reliable testament of the overall quality of the production. BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY (November 2) The story of Freddie Mercury, the electric and progressive frontman of Queen, seemed tailor-made for the big screen. Big time biopics like RAY and WALK THE LINE lead to Oscar glory for Jamie Foxx and Reese Witherspoon, and anyone who could successfully tackle and capture the essence of the larger-than-life persona of the complex Mercury would instantly put himself on the Academy’s radar. For a while, it seemed as if Sacha BaronCohen was going to fill Freddie’s shoes, but due to creative differences with the surviving members of the band, the funnyman was replaced by Rami Malek. Malek, who has earned a number of accolades for his work on the mind-bending MR. ROBOT, seemed a daring choice for the film. While he has handfuls of hardware for his small screen efforts, he’s yet to really break through in the cinematic world. Any doubt about his ability and the casting choice, however, was dispelled when the first trailer was released. Serving

Business of Interest by Nancy Roberts

The Preserve Opening Early This Fall! Corner of Spencer and Maltbie Take an old industrial space in a recovering part of Syracuse (the Inner Harbor); add the history and flavor of “salt;” and sprinkle generously with enthusiasm and the experience of “preserving” a piece of Salt City history – and what do you have? The Preserve, a soon-to-open (all puns very much intended) Gem of a restaurant, conveniently hidden along the much-traveled Creek Walk! About seven years ago, owner Doug LaLone recovered one of Syracuse’s landmark eateries, The “little” Gem Diner, a westside icon and Syracuse go-to for Sunday breakfast, late night snacks, and any-time-you’re-hungry great food. “I’m a westside kid,” says LaLone, “and I remember going to the Gem with my grandfather.” So after seven years experience in running the diner, LaLone was looking at properties in the Inner Harbor area that were possibilities for another, more upscale dining experience. “My business partner, Len Montreal, and I were standing there looking at these two old stone walls,” he says of the property, “and thinking we’d have to bulldoze them. Along comes a man, walking down the Creek Walk, and he asked if we knew what the walls were from. He started telling us the history.” The old building represented what remained of the D.R. Casey company, and which had originally been the site of an old salt pump house in the heyday of the Salt City. Plans to knock down the walls, LaLone says, immediately stopped. LaLone dug into the history of the place, and realized it would not only be an ideal spot —secluded yet close to hundreds of workers and walkers— but that it could recover another bit of Syracuse history. “The Preserve,” signifying the preservation of both food and historic landmarks, became the name for the developing restaurant. LaLone’s history with the food industry began with the family’s Mama Nancy’s truck

The old D.R. Casey Company building has been reinvisioned and revamped to become The Preserve, a soon-to-be Syracuse hit!

Jessica Kopp-Pensabene, Anthony LaLone, Tammy LaLone and Doug LaLone stop (another famous Syracuse west side location), and included many years with a spot at the State Fair. Eventually, he concentrated his time and talents on the expanded Gem Diner. Advised to update it, he resisted, and went the extra mile to keep it looking as generations (it originally opened in 1950) of Syracusans had come to know and love it. He has brought the same appreciation for the finer points of “preservation” to this new project, literally rebuilding from the ground up. “We went all out with our stone patio for outdoor dining,” he says. “We have an outdoor fireplace, a big screen TV that comes up out of the ground. We even have a 1970’s Blodgett 2 stack stone pizza oven. Most people won’t see it, but when you’re working there and you see that “Blodgett” on the doors, it means something.” Speaking of pizza – the menu has been carefully crafted, using Gem diners as test subjects. “We’d offer a special to try out out a new recipe. People would tell me – that’s going to be your winner. Then we’d try another special, and that would become the favorite.” LaLone plans to offer a mix of favorite with a local flair: gourmet burgers, 12” pizzas (one with Chicken Riggies), hand-crafted salads, and an array of appetizers like “Philly Nachos. It’s shaved steak over tortilla chips with 3 cheeses.” Look for The Preserve to open in early fall. “We want everything, from the food, to the custom booths, to how well we train our staff, to be just right,” LaLone explains. “It’s a labor of love.” Our prediction - you’re going to love The Preserve!

Fall Movie Preview continued from pg 25 as the spitting image of Mercury, Malek seem to have the poise, pizazz, and pipes to shine. It will be interesting to see how in-depth the film gets into Freddie’s personal life, which apparently was one of the main sticking points with the Baron-Cohen decision. There are those who believe you can’t possibly tell the story of Queen without delving into the complexities and demons of their leading man, while others simply wish to witness a celebration of the music and mayhem brought on by one of the most legendary musical acts of all time. FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDEWALD (November 16) When the HARRY POTTER series came to a close, there was little doubt that at some point, JK Rowling’s magical world would return in some form or other. While many wished there would be another novel, what was released was a film. Serving as the screenwriter for FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM, Rowling crafted a worthy prequel to the massively popular POTTER franchise. Containing plenty of homages to her established work, the film was a thrilling continuation of the saga, Bohemian Rhapsody (November 2) and provided a promising future for the Wizarding World. There is little reason to doubt that this sequel, THE CRIMES OF GRINDEWALD boasts enough intrigue to ensure that the POTTER crowd will turn out in droves. With the return of Eddie Redmayne as Newt Salamander, Dan Folger as the hilarious Jacob Kowalski, and Katherine Waterson as the strong-willed and plucky Tina Goldstein, the characters within BEASTS will become more defined, further illustrating that, while they may exist in a pre-established world, but that they are certainly individual characters in their own right. Despite the many personal controversies that have been plaguing him as of late, Johnny Depp steps into the villainous role of Gellert Grindelwald. Though his recent turns have been a far cry from the electric entertainer that dominated screens a few short years ago, this may be the very vehicle he needs to turn things around. Of course, the main attraction here, and the most intriguing aspect of all, is the addition of Jude Law as the beloved Albus Dumbledore. While we have heard of his many exploits and accomplishments, viewers only know him as the wise, powerful, lovable elderly statesman of Hogwarts, and this is the first opportunity to get a glimpse into what lead him towards his path of magical magnificence.

The crew returns in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindewald CREED II (November 21) It’s 2018, and miraculously, the next chapter in the ROCKY series has made it onto my list of must-see movies. The sheer absurdity of this is not lost on me, after the emotionally resonant CREED blew away audiences and critics alike, and even earned Sylvester Stallone an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. His counterpart, Michael B. Jordan, may not have earned the nomination he so richly deserved, but if he gives as dynamic of a turn in CREED II as he did the first time around, it’s hard to believe that he would be passed over once again. Much like CREED did, the second installment will introduce a character with bloodlines linked to another ROCKY Call ahead staple. This time around, Viktor Drago for (Florian Muneanu), son of Ivan Drago Take-Out (Dolph Lundgren) will be stepping into the ring to face off against Adonis (Jordan.) With the unexpected emotional depth and strong storytelling that was Rt. 11 LaFayette • 315.677.3986 exhibited last time around, it really ventured away from the endearing cheesiHomemade Luncheon Specials Daily ness of the last few ROCKY installments. Brew Time by Kristin Merritt

Beer Goggles? Nope, Beer Glasses! We talk so much about the different types of beer, but what about HOW we’re drinking it? Cans, bottles, red Solo cups – those are all givens. So let’s talk about glassware. We all have our favorite pint glass in our cupboards, (Mine happens to be my Le Moyne College Class of 2006 glass that we received for our senior pub crawl), but your classic pint glass is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to glassware. Exploring all the different types of glasses available will only serve to enhance the brews you’re drinking and exemplify the entire craft beer experience. Flute – Just as one would drink bubbly champagne out of this glass, American wild ales, Lambics, Saisons, Helles Lagers are all craft brews that benefit from such glassware. These particular beers tend to have more carbonation and intense aromas which are thus showcased by the long and narrow shape of the glass. Stems of the flutes may vary in length; there is no standard of

this. Goblet, Chalice – Both glasses evoke a sense of medieval royalty or are perhaps even reminiscent of the Holy Grail scene out the film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: “He chose … poorly.” A goblet has a long, thicker stem with a bulbous top, while a chalice is similar but has thicker glass and is therefore heavier. They might be fancy and have a gold or silver rim. Likely the most famous beer chalice you have seen is the Stella Artois chalice, and they have plenty to say about what the chalice can do for you: “The authentic shape of the body encourages the perfect balance of C02 and liquid, enhancing head retention and flavor. The angles at the bottom cause a wave that works in harmony with the liquid alchemy. The stem provides a means to hold the chalice so that the Stella Goblet Artois stays cold longer and it’s embellished with a star to honor our history.” Use with Belgians, Berliner Weissbeir, German Bocks, all while sitting on a throne. To note, the one thing that’s going to continue to pop up as we continue through this glassware lesson is the continued use of “head” on the beer and how the different glasses enhance it. Head is the foam that tops your beer when poured. Head is good. (I can hear all y’alls inner thirteen-year-boy snickering now.) The foam contains compounds such as hop oils, yeasts, esters, spices and other by products of the fermentation process. All of these Krug

elements are called volatiles and they create the aroma of your beer. Aroma is not only smell, but taste too; the two senses go hand-in-hand. Thereby making the head of your beer vitally important to the craft beer tasting experience. Stein, Seidel, Tankard, Krug – All are beer mugs of sorts, which sport handles instead of stems. All can be made out of glass, but can also be constructed of porcelain, wood, stone, pewter, and silver. The handle is purposeful in that your hand doesn’t warm up the beer contained inside. Literally any type of beer can be consumed out of a beer mug. The Stein and Krug are both shortened versions of the German word “SteinzeugTankard krug,” which means a stoneware jug or tankard. Steins have a hinged lid on the top, and you flip the lever with your thumb while gripping the handle. Fun Fact: The Stein originated in the 14th century when the area of what today is Germany, passed laws calling for food and drink to be covered to prevent the spread of the Bubonic Plague or Black Death. Perhaps the most famous Steins, especially in relation to the Central New York area, are the Schultz and Dooley Steins that originated in the 1950s and were marketed by the West End Brewing Company (WEBCO) during commercials for Utica Club beer. The lids of the steins had faces and in the television commercials they spoke to each other —Schultz with a German accent and Dooley with an Irish accent— with the two characters adventuring from a “duck ride” at a fair, to landing on the moon made of “moon-ster (muenster) cheese.” (YouTube this, you will not be disappointed) Today these original steins are worth hundreds to a couple thousand dollars. The Krug, Seidel and Tankard are generally large glass drinking mugs, sometimes with decorative etchings, that hold large quantities of beer, and are generally what you see when folks are “Prost!”-ing and heartily clinking their beer mugs together at Oktoberfest. (Of which I’ll actually be attending in Munich in a few weeks time, so stay tuned for an exciting article in the weeks to come!) Pilsner, Pokal, Weizen, Stange – These glasses tend to have more of a trumpeted to cylindrical shape. The Pilsner glass is tapered at the bottom to maintain carbonation while the wider rim at the top holds and maintains the head, aroma, and flavors of each brew. The Pokal is a European Pilsner glass with a small stem. Use both with lighter beers including pilsners, ambers, witbiers, lagers. The Weizen is used for … *drumroll please* … Weizen beers! Hefeweizens, Weizenbocks, Dunkelweizens– all your wheat beers, essentially. The Weizen glass has slightly more curvature to the top than a Pilsner glass. This curvature traps and encourages the foam head to stay thick and thus allows for the flavors and aromas and volatiles of the brew to accumulate. The Stange glass is completely cylindrical in shape and is the same circumference from base to top. The word “Stange” is German and it means “stick” or “rod.” Mainly, this is reserved for German Kölsch beer or Schwarzbier and altbiers. (I think Stange another important thing to note throughout this article is how much the Germans love their beer and glassware to go with it!) American Pint/Shaker, Nonic/Imperial, Becker – The most common glassware, especially here in the US is the iconic Pint glass, also used interchangeably with the Shaker glass. This thick, glass-walled vessel has a fairly wide and heavy base that flares wider towards the rim. The glass typically holds 16 oz. of beer and because the head is funneled to the top and not trapped, it’s best for beers that aren’t exactly delicate in nature, like hop-heavy IPAs. However, this glass can be used with all continued on pg 32

Beer Goggles? Nope, Beer Glasses! continued from pg 31 types of beer, including stouts, porters, lagers, ales. The Nonic or Imperial is an English pint glass. It is very similar to the American Pint glass except for a little lip or bubble a few centimeters from the top – helping to activate and pronounce the head. This glass is usually thinner and it holds 20 oz. compared to the 16, and is the best choice for all of your English ales, stouts and porters. The Becker is the German equivalent. Tulip, Thistle, Snifter – All of these stemmed glasses come in various shapes and sizes. Tulip glasses, regardless of shape and size, all have a flared lip at the top of the glass —this is their m.o.— thus giving the glass a tulip flower appearance. The lip serves as a way for the head and Nonic/Imperial aroma to expand. Use this glass for more intense and complex brews such as DIPAs, Imperial stouts and porters, Barleywines, Wild ales, and Belgian ales. The Thistle glass is similar but is elongated, with typically a smaller stem. The glass is aptly named for resembling Scotland’s official flower, the thistle, and is usually used to serve Scottish ales. Snifters are typically used for spirits like Brandy or Cognac, but with their wide, bowled bodies, short stems and tapering rims, they are great glasses to use for stronger craft beers and ales with higher ABVs such as Imperial stouts and porters, Barleywines, Flanders red ales, and Belgian strong ales. One of our local bars, The Evergreen, tends to use snifters quite often with many of these said brews, and for good reason as the glass allows for the full complexity and aromatics of the brews to unfold. It also allows for agitating your brew by swirling it gently and releasing the volitiles present. That being said, to allow this, do not fill your snifter to the top – half to 2/3 is best. (And if all else fails, drink out of a wine glass! Seriously! It’s of similar size and shape to your snifter.) You can obtain any of the above glassware at different locations – your big box retail stores such as Target or Walmart, finer retailers such as Macy’s or Pottery Barn, or even online at Amazon. In addition, many different breweries offer glassware that’s not just limited to pint glasses with a logo emblazoned on it. When I traveled to Burlington, Vermont and visited Foam Brewers, I brought home a Tulip glass with a short stem with their logo and ounce indicators silk-screened on to the glass and it’s become my most favorite glass in my collection. (Even if it does now have a small chip in the glass rim … wahhhhhh *sad Thistle face*) Pouring beer into your glassware is an art as well. You’ll want to hold your glass at a 45-degree angle and pour the beer with some vigor, aimed directly at the glass side, in the middle. Once you’ve poured halfway full, tip your glass fully upright and continue to pour into the middle of the glass itself. This is meant to give you the best foam head possible of approximately 1 to 1-½ inches. Probably the most important thing to remember is that you want an exceptionally CLEAN glass. Any glass that has been washed with other dishes, and has a residue of oils, fats, dirt, or contains residuals from other beers is likely to inhibit the full bloom of both head and aroma. Keep this in mind as you may wish to keep a separate sponge and drying towel in your home kitchen arsenal to be used only for your craft beer glassware. Cheers!! Snifter

Word on the Street by Bill McClellan

Trump - A Bridge Too Far A Warning I get it. Most of us, including myself realized long ago that the two major parties were furnishing us candidates that perpetuated a system that sucked our countries bounty out of society and brought it to the top. The smart and the rich bought the rules by simply understanding that greed was a force that when harnessed was the tool capable of usurping power in our system. They actually caused a vastly Republican belief that regulation for them was a violation of freedom. And that regulation for the people was the road toward socialism and/or communism. This lie paved the road for 1% to absorb half of the nation’s bounty. The patriotism (love for and desire to serve all) of our highest leaders was and is for sale. Hence, for generations, the purchase of decisions has decimated human fairness and the guidance that would have protected human fairness and the intent of the American Experiment. I am going to present some reasoning that the local Republican party may understand. Let us not forget that Democrats have equal guilt in seeding favor for favor poisons that gave us Trump. Trump has become a grave American problem under

Republican control. And in D.C. Republicans have joined his decapitation of American Values. That is shocking disgrace. I know many local Republicans and they are full of compassion and decency. Yet many fall lock-step in support of what is happening. Desperate to protect party values they ignore the evils of Trump and design their thoughts to fit his Regimen. He is far too damaging to the American Experiment for this to continue. He has crossed the line. I will explain. It is time for Republicans to seriously rethink their contribution to what is happening. I get where he came from and why, but he has to go. The suffering of too many was ignored and our leaders provided only perpetuation. Trump was a false hope that became, indeed, in practice a divisive destroyer. He deceived his voters. Trump is tearing us apart. We should be guided by the hopes of our founders and the intent of our constitution rather than policy success that we agree with. The perfect analogy that Republicans are not getting is Pre WWII-Germany. This is not analogizing the holocaust or the grave evils of this era that make analogy repulsive. There is a valuable historic lesson here. Under the Nazi regime, Germany had a thriving economy. Unemployment went from 6 million to 1 million, roads and bridges and schools and infrastructure were built along with an enormous military. All of this was achieved within continued on pg 40

Trump-A Bridge Too Far-A Warning continued from pg 36 the framework of depravity and displaced values. With depraved warning signs everywhere, his followers blindly followed him. Merciless dictators such as Franco of Spain, King Idris of Libya (just before Gaddafi), Pinochet of Chile, Zia-Ul-Hag of Pakistan and many others were morally bankrupt and presided over strong economies. What this means is that whatever you think of Trump’s policies, his character and standards parallel historic evils and are far removed from our founding spirit. He has placed the American experiment in grave danger. Trump is not a solution. He is tumor, metastasized on a system already inflicted with cancerous bribery. You have heard much but let’s take another peek at just a few reasons why this is so. You could easily add a hundred more examples to this list of hate he has for Americans that disagree. He has no idea what, nor does he care about what really makes America Great, as he spends his days degrading others. He is seeking a land where only he matters and all disagreement is punished. What is it going to take for Trump supporters to see he is taking us all into the sewer and shaming our hallowed

dead. Reasons make us great. They are care for each other, and morals and values that protect decency and equality. Get rid of quid pro quo and within this framework of values you have America. Why in the name of “Flanders Fields” would the following be ok with an American?: He took children from their parents without procedure. Many will never see their kids again. This is evil in its purest form. He knows and does not care. He refuses to accept and address the Russian attacks on our elections. He clearly fears Vladimir Putin and kowtows to him – Why does this not affect Trump supporters? His performance at Helsinki supported Putin and Russia over the USA. He calls people animals and racists, dogs, and fat, and ugly pigs, and disgusting, etc. He refers to blood from eyes and vaginas when woman offend him. He really believes that his false superiority allows him to grab vaginas. He believes it is ok to invite Russian spies into the Oval Office. He believes it is ok for him to furnish Russians classified information. He refused to release his taxes to hide his activities from Americans. He insists law enforcement be loyal to him personally. He disgustingly demands obsequious behavior from his cabinet. He maintains a for profit empire while in office. He said Megyn Kelly had blood coming out of her “wherever.” He believes Muslims and Mexicans are lessor and that Africa is a shithole. He compliments murderous dictators and supports autocracy. He has no mercy on the few even if they are children. He called Omarosa a crazed dog and a low life because she disagreed.

He calls Maxine Waters Low IQ and Don Lemon the Dumbest on TV. He revoked John Brennan’s (Former head of CIA) security clearance because he disagreed. He has fired nearly all of his cabinet for disagreeing. He punishes anyone that disagrees. He calls the media the enemy of the people. He refers to football players as sons of bitches. He refers to James Comey as a slime ball. He calls Senator Durbin “Dicky”, Senator Feinstein “Sneaky”, Senator Flake as “Flakey”, Senator Corker (as Liddle), Congressman Wilson as “Wacky”, Congressman Shiff and Senator Rubio as “Little”, Ted Cruz as “Lyin”, Jeb Bush as “weak and low energy”, Jeff Sessions as “Mr. Magoo” and “weak” and Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders and Jim Acosta as “Crazy”. Each meant to degrade. There are far too many examples to mention “ALL BECAUSE THEY DISAGREE.” His mind is occupied with venom and poison and revenge rather than American ideal. He demeaned John McCain for getting shot down on his 23rd bombing mission over North Vietnam. Trump mocked the disability of this cancer-stricken hero, a disability received while being tortured as a Vietnam POW. McCain ejected at high speed and landed in a lake with several broken bones. As McCain was dragged to land and his broken body was beaten, Trump, born rich and privileged was impatiently waiting for his doctor to confirm bone spurs, that never bothered him since.   WITH CENTRAL NEW YORK

1 handful fresh basil, roughly torn 1-2 peaches, sliced 1/3 cup crumbled goat cheese, feta, or blue cheese 1 avocado, sliced HOT BACON VINAIGRETTE 4 slices thick cut bacon, chopped 2 tablespoons champagne vinegar 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 teaspoon honey kosher salt and pepper

6 Servings

1.In a medium bowl, toss together the chicken, 1 tablespoon each of olive oil and rosemary, and a pinch each of salt and pepper. 2. Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add the chicken and sear 3-5 minutes per side until the chicken is golden and cooked through. Remove from the skillet. 3. To the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil. When the oil shimmers, add the shallot and cook 1 minute until fragrant. Add the corn, a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes, and season with salt and pepper. Cook 5-8 minutes or until the corn has browned lightly and caramelized. Remove from the heat. 4. In a large salad bowl, combine the greens, basil, peaches, chicken, and corn. If using, sprinkle on the cheese. Spoon the bacon vinaigrette overtop (recipe follows), gently tossing to combine. Finish with avocado. Enjoy! HOT BACON VINAIGRETTE 1. Heat a large skillet over medium high heat and cook the bacon until crisp. Drain off all but 1 tablespoon of bacon grease. To the bacon in the skillet, add the vinegar, olive oil, honey, and a pinch each of red pepper, salt, and pepper. Drizzle the warm vinaigrette over the salad.

Trump-A Bridge Too Far-A Warning continued from pg 41 jungle floor crimson as Trump lived the life of wealth. Coward is such a nasty word even when it is a perfect fit. He mocked a handicapped reporter repulsively and disgustingly. 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. year old’s are alone without parents, some will never be reunited, because of this heartless decrepit man. He is with fine with this. The list of evil is dark and long. It is not Trump, one fool, that worries me, it is his following. If you are still Trump and not at least on the cusp of realizing he is a grave mistake, you are a victim of and believe in what is destroying the greatness that you are lied to about. To be clear: The Congress and the Senate and the Supreme Court of the United States of America are guided by a system, where the source for all that is wrong can be traced back to the purchasing of our leaders. Before Trump they were far worse than Trump. The difference in their destruction was subtle. Its massive consequence evolved over decades. Most didn’t notice until their job or house or heath care was taken. Over the years this happened to 10’s of millions and the term American Dream became a past hope taught in history classes. Trumps evil is glaring and in your face. Hopefully he is our lesson. The lesson is: end bribery in leadership or continue on the road where the public are low paid pawns and puppets for wealth. 1% owns half the country. They cried poverty. Trump gave them the biggest tax cut in history as our Country crumbles and our debt is insane. Token measures were taken up front to appease the masses. The wrong is so grave and so clear and so easy to understand. Why is it so accepted among Republicans? How did such wrong invade their hearts and the heart of John Katko who voted for this? And please don’t tell me about this thriving economy that no one feels. You don’t feel it because it is an economic path toward the third world. Sure, lots are working, two jobs and for peanuts, and the party brags and blind followers listen. The Republican base has been taught via wealth induced propaganda within the party that immigrant dreamers and moms on food stamps are sucking up the American

dream. How many resent and call those receiving assistance freeloaders, when in truth it is the privileged few that have sucked the heart out of America? 1% has more than the bottom 50% combined. 5% of the 1% wealth would finance food stamps and welfare. Corporate welfare is larger than needed welfare. Please stop and think about these things before you resent the poor over the takers. It is the likes of Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort and the bankruptcies of Donald Trump and the purchased regulation that bankrupted our economic stability that rob this land blind. It is not an immigrant or a welfare mom waiting in line for a brick of cheese. Lowlife has nothing to do with wealth and everything to do with quality. Donald Trump is a lowlife. Rich does not cause good children. Cruel heartless leaders often build fair or good economies. We are “AMERICAN.” Human quality matters. America has a cruel dispassionate liar making decisions off the top his head. Inflicting pain on brown people is fine. He has taken their children. They have so little meaning that often records were not kept. Hundreds will never see their family again. Trump belongs in history with Nazi’s, Fascists, Autocrats and Dictators. He has adopted their autocratic ways. Normally we avoid such analogy. But Trump is divisive and has caused a concern that massive civil unrest with untold outcome could happen in America. The mentioned systems were riddled with racism and dispassion that resulted in hate and mass murder. Trump has opened the door for hate to move forward and the best of America must close that door. E Pluribus Unum (All for one – one for all) binds our values and makes us America. Don’t ever forget, we did have a civil war. And in the Trump era the divisive seeds for unrest have been planted. End campaign finance. Allow the best that humans can be. Allow founding spirit to restore our course once and for all. And please vote Democrat like never before. Trumps misguided supporters must go. That mean John Katco.
