years ago A friend gave me Cigar Box guitar. I decided to up him and make him something stranger, so I made a guitar out of a broom to give him. I put on three strings, parts of a bow and arrow, a muffler clamp off of mini bike. I wanted to make it really rude and crude as a joke. So at the end of making it I decided to plug it in to see if it made a noise and I fell in love with the sound. I ended up not giving it to him. Now it is one of the main instruments that I use for my band swamp drivers. I was playing with another band at the time and I practiced with the broom and finally I took the instrument to play at a gig. I walked in with his broom and Leaned it against the wall. I went back out to get my amplifier and normal guitar. And when I came back in everybody was taking pictures of this broom. From that night’s response I decided to have a complete band and everybody play homemade instruments. One of the first instruments after the broom that I made as bad as it sounds was a three-string plunger and as I played it gave this eerie swamp sound. So the instruments actually help give the band its name swamp drivers. The drive part of the name comes from the way the band plays. We’re high energy driving band. CS: Do you play conventional instruments, too? TJ: The guys in the band own their own conventional instruments. But, after all the attention that we’ve gotten with these instruments, we’re all very happy playing our homemade instruments, instead. Each one of the guys in the band makes and plays his

As far as myself goes, my instruments range from a 3-string broom I call the “witch stick,” a 3-string plunger I called the “Crap o Caster. A 1-string garden hoe I call a “Diddly Hole.” I made guitars made out of Harley Davidson motorcycle parts that were featured in Guitar Player magazine and put on Guitar World. Many videos have gone viral. I’ve got a guitar made out of a frying pan that also went viral. Show. In January of this year I was invited to go on Rachael Ray TV show and played the instrument on her show. CS: I can imagine quite a response when people see you playing these instruments … TJ: The response from people that have never seen our show before is hilarious. First thing: they walk by and they see our instruments are a plunger or the garden hoe and they start to laugh. Then we start to play and it blows them away. Our sound is a very high-energy ZZ Top-ish style of music. I’ve also completed two instrumental CDs, again, featuring all homemade instruments. I’ve also started a business called Mojo Johnson guitars. Mojo Johnson has a few of the instruments that I’ve made plus a guitar you design from a cigar box guitar. It has only three strings and just a few frets that anybody can play. I designed it for my granddaughter and then I found that anybody can learn how to play it. CS: Is there a future goal for this? the internet we are always being asked to come all around the world to play, UK, Australia, etc. But at this time doing the one off show just isn’t possible, hopefully down the road we can. CS: Any thoughts on creativity itself? TJ: It’s incredible how our instruments have changed the creativity of the band. It makes us play and think of things outside the normal box that we’ve done for years. It’s not the look of the instruments it’s the sound that we get from them. CS: Your thoughts on CNY music scene: TJ: Central New York music scene very strong. There are a lot of places but there’s a lot more bands that want to play. All the bands know one another and I say most bands help each other out. CS: Tell us about the Rachel Ray show. TJ: The Rachael Ray Show is probably one of the coolest and scariest things that I’ve ever done. At the beginning I didn’t feel nervous at all but when I came around the corner, walked across in front of everybody all the cameras and people it was very intimidating. They took me to the spot for me to play and I heard somebody talk to me, I looked up and it was Rachael small talking from across the room. She made it very comfortable and easy for me. After small talking with her for a while she just said to “go ahead play.” I didn’t get a chance to warm up, so it was a little intimidating. But, I have to say it all came off without a hitch. CS: Whats on the horizon for you and the Swamp Drivers? TJ: Always making new and different instruments. Trying to get other people besides Rachael Ray to take interest in what we’re doing. We’ve got several instruments made out of Harley Davidson motorcycle parts that I thought they would take a look at. That hasn’t happened yet but you just never know. As far as gigs go we are always trying to move up the corporate ladder so-to-speak. We would love to be playing cigar box music festivals or actually any Festival. CS: How can we all keep up with your progress?

The Write Stuff by NANCY ROBERTS
Killer Cults This isn’t a book. It’s a “topic magazine,” published by Time Life Books in early 2018, and drawn from both publications’ years of historic editions. Now a confession: a few years ago I became intrigued by Charles Manson, Laurel Canyon, the burgeoning of the youth culture, and ultimately, the Tate/LaBianca murders. So I read just about everything I could find on the subject. When I saw this title staring at me from the grocery store magazine racks, I couldn’t resist. The thick glossy actually recounts the stories, in chronological order, of 5 cults that rose, from the 60s through the 90s, though one is reputedly still operating. Each one promised the coming Apocalypse, relied on a charismatic central figure, and ended up delivering a horrific story of the promised land gone awry. Included in the book are The Manson Family, Jonestown, The Branch Davidians, Heavens Gate, and Aum Shinrikyo. The book starts with probably the most notorious, and clearly the one that most captured the popular imagination: Charles Manson. An arguably pathetic figure, who just ended his days a convict, “Charlie” was abandoned by his teen prostitute mother at just 11, and had been put in detention by the time he was 14 for burglary. Manson was a drifter, a grifter, and a Rasputin-like con-man who quickly identified an opportunity in the Haight-Ashbury scene in California. A common feature of each of these cults, and their Shaman-like leader (who is invariably a man), is that they are drawn from the ranks of those seeking heaven-on-earth: the
young, the disaffected, the idealistic, the magical thinkers. And the Sixties was a perfect opportunity for a guy like Charlie. He soon drew a band of merry mostly girls to his side, and his pattern of use and abuse, while perhaps more brutal, was repeated by each of the cults’ Svengalis: intermittent re-enforcement, hypnotic mantras, periods of physical stress, punishment, and excess – and a guarantee that he, the leader, is The Messiah.

While Biblical promises are most often the tool of these tradesmen, that’s perhaps because all but one of the cults was American made. Manson found parallels with The Beatles and The Book of Revelation, and handy paths into the psyches of his Family members with LSD and pot. Another common feature of the Cults seems to be that at some point, each Leader has a break. Hardly unexpectedly, the burden of keeping his members under his influence, as well as his own psychoses, at some point in each story lead the prophet to offer the Final Solution. Book-ending the stories are two tales of murder and mayhem, with three mass suicides in between. Manson’s demand that his subjects commit “Helter Skelter,” by killing apparently innocent people and bringing on what he predicted would be a race war, followed by his return in glory, ended in one of the more notorious trials of modern history – complete with magical “mind control,” courtroom antics, and Charlie drawing more “fan mail” while incarcerated than any prisoner recorded. About ten years later, the newspapers were full of terrible fly-over photos of heaps of bodies in a place called “Jonestown,” after its master, the Reverend Jim Jones. Another charismatic figure, he moved his followers to a new paradise on earth in Guyana, where his People’s Temple actually did seem to thrive for a time - growing crops, raising children, and while Jones was less abusive in life than some of the other cultists, his “snap” came suddenly and at a price: today we talk about “drinking the KoolAid” as a short hand for accepting a myth a truth, at the time, Jones convinced his followers to truly drink Manson was a drifter, a grifter, and a Rasputin-like the Kool-Aid – a fatal drink mixed with cyanide. con-man who quickly identified an opportunity in Almost all of them perished as a result. the Haight-Ashbury scene in California. from the rest of its Marvel brethren. For those expecting a slew of unexpected cameos and familiar Marvel characters, you are going to be largely disappointed. While there are plotlines and minor characters that exist within the universe (Martin Freeman’s Ross being one notable exception) BLACK PANTHER is a film that doesn’t need to rely on the help of others to succeed. The film itself has a vibe to it that is so completely different than anything that has come before it, that it feels as if it is an entirely separate entity from its predecessors. Visually stunning in a way no other Marvel film has been, every aspect of the production is remarkable. From its spellbinding settings, to its seamless special effects, to its unique characters and their lavish costumes, it’s a feast for the eyes in almost each and every frame. Beyond this, director Ryan Coogler’s beautiful film has a depth that is missing from virtually all of its counterparts. There is genuine emotion that fueled each and every character, and in the hands of the pitch-perfect cast (Boseman, Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Angela Bassett, Freeman, and Serkis) it allows BLACK PANTHER to become far more than your typical superhero blockbuster. Rather than interjecting storylines that serve as mere filler to get to the next action sequence, the story itself is filled with drama and suspense. There is palpable torture and hurt that fuels Stevens’ seemingly evil actions, and thanks to yet another phenomenal turn from rising star Jordan, he becomes one of the most memorable villains Marvel has seen in years. As his foil, Boseman is a fallible hero who struggles to decide what is right for his people, and the world. The fate of humanity may very well rest in his hands, and he certainly does not take the responsibility lightly. The conflicted nature of the two main characters propels the story, so when the bombastic battle sequences do arise, they feels more like a payoff than an obligation. With all of these unique elements fusing cohesively together, the result is an endlessly entertaining and original production that elevates the superhero genre to unexpected new heights. Killer Cults continued from pg 7 were once again sad and lonely people drawn to a smooth-talking, straight-out-of-thebook manipulators, who used the classic patterns of privilege and deprivation, along with lengthy sermons and the promise of his own Divinity to keep his flock behaving. Granting himself a great car, all the women, and regular meals —while his people had none of this with any regularity— Koresh, too, seemed to have deteriorated and snapped. The question remained: would this have happened had the FBI and BAFT not intervened? Then AG Janet Reno’s handling of the situation was called into question again and again – did the Branch members actually plan to blow themselves up, or stage an attack? They were armed, there was no doubt. But they also had squirreled away food and supplies for the coming End of Times. What remains is the aftermath: the federal government did go in, armed, and the Branch compound Sharon Tate, one of the victims of “Charlie” Manson’s “Helter Skelter” crimes was blown up, killing almost all of the men, women and children living there – Koresh included. The most curious detail was that Timothy McVeigh, of the Federal Building bombing 2 years after Waco, was on the scene at Waco (out of curiosity) and committed his heinous act on the anniversary of that event. Possibly the strangest of the cults was Marshall Applewhite’s Heavens Gate cult. He was yet another leader who used the Internet and videos to draw some of his followers – who may have stumbled onto him as they watched the approach of the Hale-Bopp comet (a fly-by event that will not happen again for another 4000 years) on NASA’s website. Applewhite convinced a small band of true believers that the comet came with an alien spaceship, which would take the pure up with it in a kind of Rapture, to move on to the next dimension in time. Followers were relatively few, but ardent: when the bodies of the cult were found, most had shaved their hair, and some of the men had castrated themselves in order to shuck their “old” bodies in hopes of a new on the next plane. Among them was the brother of Star Trek’s Lt. Uhuru, Nichelle Nichols; most of the cult neatly dressed in new black clothing, lay upon their bunks, and took a final dose of earthly life. The final cult the book covers is one that still exists – and in somewhat alarming numbers. Aum Shinrikyo was most notorious for its mid-90s sarin attack (sarin is a nerve gas first experimented with in Nazi Germany) on the Tokyo subways. Horribly fatal, the cults’ actual death toll wasn’t massive, but the fear that it inspired was. If a tube of chemical compound could be dropped inconspicuously in a heavily trafficked area – what kind of risk are we all under? The cult’s leader was a Yoga master who used mysticism, existing religious belief, and his own personal charm (though among the group, he’s the least likely looking) to convince true believers (in the tens of thousands in various “chapters”) to create the gas while living sequestered in compounds, and practicing various forms of meditation and physical and mental deprivation. While the master, Shoko Asahara, was captured and imprisoned, some unknown but significant number of his followers have apparently OPEN 6 DAYS A WEEK ≈ MONDAY-SATURDAY ended up in Russia, where they still look for the advent of Supreme Truth. The book is a wealth of photographs and stories written at the time, so the perspective on the events is that of the people witnessing the events as they occurred. The editors have combed the files to distill each story into its essential parts: the leader, his story, his Lobster Tails, Fresh Scallops, Fried Shrimp, Cocktail Shrimp, Fried end; the cult’s members, their ideals Smelt, Fried Calamari, and dreams; the ultimate outcome of King Crab Legs, Snow Crab Clusters, the tale. Wonder Too often in live-action family films, any endearing content is destroyed by the inevitable cheese that overshadows everything else. It is difficult to achieve a balanced blend of tenderness and entertainment, yet somehow, the engaging WONDER finds a way. 10-year-old Auggie Pullman (Jacob Tremblay) is like most boys his age. He loves STAR WARS and video games, and hopes to one day become an astronaut. He is highly intelligent with a penchant for science, and lives at home with his adoring mother (Julia Roberts,) father (Owen Wilson,) and teenage sister, Via (Izabela Vidovic). And, for the first time in his life, he is set to attend a public school. Auggie is heading into the fifth grade, and up until this point, he has been home-taught by his mom. This life changing moment would be a monumental task for any tween, but Auggie’s situation is far different than most. Due to a genetic abnormality, he has gone through 27 surgeries in his life, and has facial differences that sets him apart from the rest of his potential classmates. Tales from the Vine

Women in Wine March is Women’s History month and being so close to Seneca Falls, the birthplace of Women’s rights, it feels appropriate to write about some of the women on Cayuga Lake. It begins with the Lucas Family, who runs the oldest winery along Cayuga Lake, and the founder, Ruth Lucas, was one of the first women winemakers. She moved her family to Interlaken in 1974 from the Bronx, knowing she wanted her family to plant something they could nurture and take care of, rather than the typical corn or wheat. With the help of her three children, they soon began making award-winning vintages and made a Three generation of Lucas women running the Lucas Vineyards and name for themselves. Ruth said she never faced adversity being the only female wineshowing no signs of stopping! maker. Instead, she was respected and able to ask the guys to try her samples and learn from their experience and opinions. She was also one of the founding members of the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail, and has been an active member since its inception in 1983. Her advice to women who are thinking about getting into the wine industry is simple: “Be sure you enjoy it. Be sure it’s a passion. Be sure it’s something you want to do. It’s a lot of hard work and manual labor, but there’s a lot of satisfaction in it.” Today, Lucas Vineyards is run by three generation of Lucas women, with no sign of stopping. Buttonwood Grove Winery currently has a team of leading women, including Sue Passmore, the winemaker behind their 2016 Riesling that won the 2017 Governor’s Cup. Sue has been in the wine industry for about 26 years. “Some of the women at church picked grapes and fall is such a beautiful time of the year that I wanted to try it. I could put my daughter on the school bus and then join the pickers when I needed to meet the bus.” From there, she eventually worked her way into the cellar. Kathy Lesslie also works at Buttonwood and credits Sue to being her inspiration for getting into the wine industry. She has the sometimes-difficult task of working the tasting bar, which includes a lot of wine knowledge and customer service skills. Marcia Klue is also one of the leading women who work at Buttonwood. She’s the powerhouse marketing-guru behind their new image after the Pittards bought it in 2014. She’s worked in the industry for 10 years and feels that the future of women in wine is on the rise. “There doesn’t seem to be much of a ‘glass ceiling’ in the local industry.” In other words, the world, or at least the Finger Lakes, is our oyster! Another up and coming woman in the industry that I spoke with was Rachel Hadley. She’s currently the Winemaker at Knapp Winery, with a couple other local wineries under her belt. While working her way through college, she worked in a local tasting room, and her love for wine bloomed and flourished from there. She’s studied

abroad and said the wine industry wasn’t nearly as accepting of women internationally as they are here. The cellars had different expectations for women, and many of the men didn’t think they could handle the heavy lifting. Through perseverance, she made her way through the industry and on her way to making a name for herself. Julie Hoyle, Head Winemaker for Hosmer Winery, started much the same. She stumbled into the wine industry and quickly found a lifelong passion. She studied abroad, and faced similar challenges as Rachel did, but came back and found her footing. I asked her if she felt like there was an advantage to being a woman in winemaking. She said “I don’t believe that women or men intrinsically are better or worse at winemaking. One advantage I have over some of my male peers is the deep-rooted network of other female winemakers, assistant winemakers, and vineyard workers I am part of. Sometimes this means we go out for a beer together, or share a meal. What it always means is that we are there to celebrate each other’s successes.” All across the Finger Lakes, more and more women are popping up, and having each other’s backs, in all aspects of the industry: vineyard crew, wine making, marketing, tasting room staff, management, etc. The march for equality started with Elizabeth Cady Stanton in Seneca Falls, NY and the Finger Lakes wine ladies are taking what she did and running with it full-force. To say she’d be proud is an understatement!

Let me explain. … The shoes we wear are insulating us from the ground we walk on and that insulation —that lack of grounding— is not good for us. We

I am either earthed or what? Unearthed? Mooned? You will see both terms when you look on the internet … and that is where you should go next. I have laid out the basic science for you. Do your own research. Look for the youtube video entitled Clint Ober demonstrates Earthing. Or check out the documentary Grounded. Nowadays the only times we are barefoot outdoors is at the beach. We have disconnected ourselves from the planet. Why not look into reconnecting and see if it can help with your sleep, your chronic pain, your inflammatory state. You are not going to get any of this from your doctors office. Unfortunately today you have to take charge of your own healthcare and seek help outside of the conventional medical model. You know the model … what’s the problem? … here’s a pill. New problem? -New pill! There has to be a better way. There is a better way and that is to focus on your diet and exercise to improve your health and not rely on big pharma to improve your health. Big pharma might stabilize things but it’s up to you to improve your own health. Dr. James Oschman professor of biology at Woods Hole Oceanic Research Center has said that Grounding might be more important than the discovery of penicillin! Your doctor hasn’t heard of this. It is not covered by insurance. It doesn’t need a prescription. It is not mentioned in the major medical journals so … no, your doctor knows nothing about it. Luckily for you, you don’t need your doctor for this. All you need is knowledge … knowledge you can get reliably from the internet … knowledge to learn how to use simple materials to ground yourself or just buy the kits on line and judge for yourself. There is absolutely no way you can be harmed by grounding. There are not any medical contraindications. There are no interactions with your medicine (your pacemaker, etc.). Wisdom & Hope Dear Readers: I have a long list of poems, wisdoms, thoughts and ideas that I have jotted down over the years. Recently I was perusing several years of notes and I thought it would be fun and interesting to share a few highlights of what I found wise or profound or the best that logic can be. Regular readers will recognize the first few. Much is legend that we all hold dear. They are in no particular order. Just written as I find them. To begin, one of my favorites as regular readers know is Flanders Fields, by Lt. Col. John McRae. To me this poem exemplifies why the American dream of a home and happiness in a fair and just land “For All” must prevail. I refer to this poem from time to time as it embraces several decades of disappointment in American Leadership succumbing to greed. Unbelievable timing saved me from battle. I served in two outfits that fought with great valor. Life expectancy in one was half of the tour duty. It is for those that serve among the poppies that I do my best in this little column in an effort to show when we veer from a path worthy of their sacrifice. “If ye break faith …” Flanders Fields American Cemetery and Memorial is a World War I cemetery on the southeast edge of the town of Waregem, Belgium. The memorial was designed by architect Paul Cret. This is the only American World War I cemetery in Belgium and 411 American servicemen are buried or commemorated there. “For seventeen days and seventeen nights none of us have had our clothes off, nor our boots even, except occasionally. In all that time while I was awake, gunfire and rifle fire never ceased for sixty seconds. … And behind it all was the constant background of the sights of the dead, the wounded, the maimed, and a terrible anxiety lest the line should give way.” Through this smoke and fog of war Lt. Another old favorite is The Station, by Robert J. Hastings. We have not printed this one in many years. It is a poem that places life in perspective and helps us enjoy our days as best as can be:
The Station Tucked away in our subconscious minds is an idyllic vision in which we see ourselves on a long journey that spans an entire continent. We’re traveling by train and, from the windows, we drink in the passing scenes of cars on nearby highways, of children waving at crossings, of cattle grazing in distant pastures, of smoke pouring from power plants, of row upon row upon row of cotton and corn and wheat, of flatlands and valleys, of city skylines and village halls. But uppermost in our conscious minds is our final destination–for at a certain hour and on a given day, our train will finally pull into the Station with bells ringing, flags waving, and bands playing. And once that day comes, so many wonderful dreams will come true. Re: Al Franken: There is such a thing as taking an issue so strongly and personally that good judgment goes out the window. I have never met a man or a woman that wasn’t an ass at some time in their life. Al Franken is not a bad man. He was making a difference for America. To destroy him was wrong. It is one thing to destroy one’s life for right, it is quite another when you yourself cross the line of human fairness and decency to do it. In the sexual harassment arena variables are significant. There is no comparison between Harvey Weinstein and Al Franken. In such an emotionally charged issue, it is that difference we must remember before we tarnish lives and ruin careers. Leaders that develop stature are all too rare and should not so easily be taken down without just consideration. Who should cast the first stone? Degree matters. Imagine coming into maturity and recognizing that not long ago the white race thought what the few following quotes symbolize was just fine. If you give such matters heartfelt thought and realize such thinking is widespread today, only then will you have an idea what it is like to try to forgive intolerable injustice. The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses established in the United States during the early-to-mid 18th century, and used by African-American slaves to escape into free states and Canada with the aid of abolitionists and allies who were sympathetic to their cause. The Power Trip I have an iPhone. Some of this information may or may not apply to you if you have an Android type phone – but my suspicion is that cord problems are universal, if the cords themselves are not. So, have you, like me, suffered the indignity of buying maybe 100 cords since you got your first iPhone? After all, when you buy a television or a lamp, you expect the cord to just work. Now, granted, over time and lots of pulling and tugging (unlikely with a lamp or a TV but possible) and the strands inside the cord may break and eventually not deliver enough power for your electrical appliance. How many phone cords have YOU bought since you got your first iphone? But these are devices that don’t have internal batteries, so as soon as you add that into the equation, things will change. I first became aware of the whole issue of power cords when Apple released a phone with a new end - from that broad, flat style to the small version. And all those charging cables had to be replaced: the one in each room, the car versions, the one I carried in my purse, the one I kept as a spare in my work bag. And they weren’t cheap. Needless to say, I wasn’t alone in this frustration, so thus far, Apple has wisely not changed its cord design. In order to understand the power cords, though, I first learned that not all cords for battery-enabled devices are created equal. Now, of course, I knew that my laptops didn’t necessarily have the same plug end for the computer. (All the wall plugs are more or less the same, and as long as you’ve got reasonably current wall plugs, you’ll be fine on that end. -Yes, that’s a pun.) But the amperage is not necessarily the same, nor is the fitting on your laptop or tablet. So, you’ll need to be careful to find the right replacement or additional cord. continued on pg 26

I’m not an EE or anything close, so it never occurred to me that as long as I had the right innie for the laptop itself, I could use any adapter (the fat part that sits between the cord to your laptop, and the cord to the wall). No. You need the right amperage. So if you need to replace a cord, or you want one to carry with you so you’re not pulling one out of the wall when you travel, make sure to look for the model number on the adapter, and then find one with the proper power delivery. Back to the iPhone. When charging any electronic device, there are four things that need to be considered: 1- the wall adapter or power source 2- the Lightning cable (that’s the USB cable that plugs into the wall adapter on one end, and your phone on the other) 3- the charging port at the bottom of your phone 4- the software you’re running on your phone And one, or even more than one of these, may be at fault if things aren’t working correctly. The most frustrating problem is that the iPhone has updated its software and suddenly it’s not charging properly. One of the first things to try —especially if an update was threatened … er, promised— is a hard reset. Don’t just let it go to sleep, or do a quick reset, do a complete reboot (whatever that means for your particular phone). It’s not a bad idea to do this periodically, anyway. I know it’s easier to leave all our devices on (just sleeping when not in use) but allowing them to release all their memory and clear things out now
and then is a good idea. Check your cable. If it’s frayed at the end, that’s obvious. Make a practice of wrapping it gently when carrying it around, in a loose circle, so that you’re not bending the fragile little wires inside the plastic “wrapper.” If it’s bent or has an obvious dent or hole anywhere along its length, it may very well be time for a new cable (it may work if it’s aligned just perfectly, but let’s be honest, this will drive you crazy!). Another thing to check is the end that plugs into your phone. It may be corroded, or damaged beyond repair. But first try cleaning it. You can just use a soft cloth on it, though I admit that when I’ve seen a bit of corrosion I’ve been known to use a fingernail —lightly — on it to scrape it off. Then check the port on your phone. It may have accumulated some dust or debris. You can tap your phone lightly on the side with the port facing down, and you can blow lightly into it. One website recommends using a clean, dry toothbrush (good tip!). Try plugging a known working cable in to see if it lights up. I’ve also found that plugging a cable into a USB port on my computer will sometimes make a “faulty” cable work - which really means that the wall adapter is probably not working. Since I have about dozen, and since (moving on shortly to the next likely problem) many of them are not OEM, I can usually try this adapter or that one and if the cable fails in all of them – including the computer, I can be fairly sure the cable is not recoverable. Then there is that third party cable and adapter problem. They are *not* all created equal. If you find one that is less expensive than Apple’s and that works – good for you and tell your friends. Once inside, I was greeted by very cheerful people to directed me to the “Elder’s Room.” This room overlooked the giant ice arena where people of all ages were skating. There was even a toddler who was learning with a metal frame to help her stay upright. He then introduced me to Bret Bucktooth, professional lacrosse player. What’s more, Bret has vast experience to share. He started playing on the nation with 10 or 12 kids, and his dad, Freeman Bucktooth, was his 1st coach. “My dad is the first one who taught me how to be a complete player particularly when you don’t really have enough kids for a team. You have to learn every position and fill in the gaps. He also taught me to never stop learning – ‘be a sponge’ he would say.” This led to Bret’s success at Lafayette High School, and Syracuse University where he studied and played from 2003 to 2006. From there, he went pro and played for a few teams, but loves playing for the Black Wolves, where he plays now. “I’ve had the advantage of having some of the best coaches too. First my dad, then Coach Desko at SU, and now Jim Velman. Each has something unique to offer, and I was surprised by the style Coach Desko had when I first went to college. He didn’t micro-manage us, but he made sure you knew the expectations. He allowed to make your own decisions, but you knew you HAD to show up and be prompt.” He now plays with other big name players like John Tavarez, the all-time all high scorer, and “young guys” like Lyle Thomson, for whom he now “marks.” Now that Bret considers himself as one of the older guys, he plays more defense and set up. It goes back to his initial lesion of being a “complete player.” Now it’s time for Bret to follow in his father’s footsteps. He’s paying it forward by coaching now. I asked him what he liked best about coaching, and he replied, “I love seeing the little ones with their big helmets. They look like bobble heads.” You can see the joy for the game and the kids when he said that by the big smile on his face. The other advantage to coaching is, “It reteaches you the fundamentals. When you play for so long, you forget those sometimes. Coaching reminds you where it began and it makes you a better coach and player.” However, the first thing Bret teaches is fun! Bret and Sherwin then explained the concept behind lacrosse. “It’s a healing game, and it’s meant to help you focus on positive things. You heal when you’re playing,” said Bret. It’s a good thing it’s a healing game, because the hardest part of lacrosse is overcoming injury. “First, it’s difficult to be away from your family because you have to travel a lot. “The other hardship is not being able to play after you’ve been injured” said Bret, but then “you know you’ll get back to playing so you do what you have to do to get well.” The healing power of lacrosse provides medicine to the soul – you make new friends with other players, and “your family is always there to cheer you on,” said Sherwin. In the Elder’s Room, I saw the Nation’s greatest lacrosse players, but I was embarrassed that I only knew Chief Oran Lyons. However, I plan to learn a lot more about the game this summer. “What a lot of people don’t realize is that we’re open to our neighboring communities. Anyone can come and watch the games. As a matter of fact, we hope more people will come to the games.” stated Sherwin, the director of the arena.

The arena was built in 2001 and was completely funded by the Onondaga Nation. However, they would love to show everyone what the facility has to offer. Inside, there is a snack bar and tables to congregate between games. Kids lacrosse is free! And junior and senior games are only a $5.00 admission fee! “You’ll see players from age 3 or 4 up to 70,” explained Sherwin. While they run some camps, most of the summer is booked with games where they compete with other Nations. There are some players from JordanElbridge and Lafayette, and all kids are welcome. What I loved most about doing this story was how warm and welcoming everyone was to me from the ladies standing outside and in the office, and then Sherwin and Bret. I want to send a huge “THANK YOU” to everyone at Tsha’Hoñ’noñyeñ’dakhwa’ and remember that everyone is welcome to visit the arena on the Onondaga Nation!

¡La Cerveza en Gran Canaria! What better time to travel than wintertime in CNY! (Just ask all our snowbird friends who spend half their year in Florida!) This edition of Brew Time features my travels to the big island of the Canary Islands —or Gran Canaria as the locals call it— and a few of my beer experiences during my two week holiday!
A few things to get us started … Gran Canaria is a Spanish island,150km (93.2 miles) off the coast of Africa. It happens to be a hot vacation spot for Europeans, especially Spaniards and Norwegians. In just our first few days here, we have found out that these islands do not get very many American visitors. Everyone is genuinely (& pleasantly) shocked to see Americans, hardly anybody speaks a lick of English (thankfully, hablo Español un poquito), and we have yet to meet any Americans ourselves, and I just might creepily hug them the moment I find them, like some strange family reunion of sorts. I also have not necessarily been drinking much beer … Because when in Spain, drink Sangria! … & I will have likely consumed my weight in Sangria by the time I leave for the states. SPAR is the main local grocery store chain here on the island. Unlike in the states, you can buy all of your alcoholic beverages in one place – beer, wine, and liquor. You can also buy individual cans/bottles of beer, like the Wegmans’ (or Green Hills!) make-your-own 6-pack that we all know and love, except you’re not required to purchase a total of six. Which has been great for writing this article! Purchases have also been far cheaper than back in the states. Even though we as Americans have a crap exchange rate because of our weak dollar (1 euro for about a $1.25) the cost of things —especially food items— have been cheaper altogether. For instance, a bottle of aged Spanish Tempranillo wine bought at a local shop

was 3.30 euros. Or another example was ordering a mojito and a whole margarita pizza at a local restaurant for a total of 13 euros.

The first brew I had the pleasure of trying on vacation was made right here in the Canary Islands! Compañía Cervecera de Canarias (Canary Islands Brewing Company) is the name of the brewery, and the beer is Tropical Bandido Cerveza con Tequila which literally translates to Tropical Bandit Beer with Tequila. This is not a small local brewery, but is instead a macro brewery, not unlike Budweiser in the United States, (which, ironically, was the only American beer I was able to find on the island), and is a staple brewery of this area. The logo for the brewery is a dog Tropical Bandido Cerveca (“perro de presa” or a large Canarian dog) and with a lighthouse in the background, (surrounded by laurel leaves on some beverages) and the can itself displays neo-traditional artwork. At 5.9% ABV, it’s a pretty easy drinking lager, especially considering the tequila in it. I found the beer to be light, sweet, with a delightful lime presence that was not at all “fake-tasting.” The tequila was evident with a very slight burn in the back of your throat at the end of a swig. Somewhat like what we would consider a shandy here in the U.S.A. and a perfect accompaniment to a day at the beach or drinking beside the pool. Unfortunately, I was unable to visit this brewery during my vacation as it is located on the island of Tenerife, a different island in the Canaries. continued on pg 32

Now we have to remember that nothing, and I mean NOTHING, is in English, so I’m just guessing at what I’m pulling off the shelves to try. Next up is a lager from Finland — Karhu A— with a big, angry brown bear for a logo, who is in reality, kinda cute. (Can you tell I’m pretty much picking beers off the shelf that have fluffy animals plastered across the front?) The macro brewery this comes from is called Sinebrychoff, the oldest Nordic brewery, which is now actually a subsidiary of the famous Carlsberg brewing group – I think most of us have heard of it, or have seen the green, gold, and white logo with the hop leaf and crown which is based out of Copenhagen, Denmark? Either way, this 5.3% ABV lager is brewed with water from Lake Päijänne and barley malt grown in Finland and is considered “the strongest in it’s breed” and “full-bodied,” and I would heartily agree with both statements. It is a malty, strong lager. While it’s not my personal favorite, there is something to be said for it being the number one selling beer in Finland, and if you’re looking for an inexpensive lager that doesn’t taste watered down, then this hits the nail on the head.

The third supermercado cerveza I randomly pulled off the shelf was a dark brew, because those are usually my favorites of the bunch. (Next to a hazy, hoppy, juicy IPA... & doubly good if the IPA is earthy and pine-y!) I digress … Erdinger Dunkel, by macro brewery Erdinger Weissbräu, is a 5.3% ABV dunkelweizen. Dark chocolate brown in Karhu A, a lager from Finland that is considered the strongest in its breed @ color, this dark wheat beer is both robust and flavorful with roasted malts and a slight 5.3% alchohol note of raisins on the very end. Rather lovely and enjoyable to say the least! This particular brew was first created in 1989, as a birthday gift to the brewery’s owner, Werner Brombach. The family-owned Erdinger Weissbräu, located in Erding, Bayern, Germany, has been brewing Bavarian beers for more than 130 years. They also happen to export their brews to over 90 countries, which means I will definitely be on the lookout for more of this particular beer when I get back in the states. I may even plan on visiting this brewery when I head to Germany this coming fall, (future article alert!), as they have brewery tours Tuesdays through Saturdays, complete with a tour, tastings, food, and a souvenir photo of your tour group for 17 euros per person and the tour actually lasts THREE WHOLE HOURS! (Those Germans take their beer seriously, what can I say?) In addition, I can literally stay on the brewery premises overnight, because the former brewery was transformed into a 4-star hotel. It’s literally a Bavarian beer lover’s Disneyland. I haven’t even begun to touch the surface of all the different brews that were available to me from a vast array of breweries throughout Europe and beyond during my many outings, day trips, and restaurants while on my vacation in Gran Canaria. (& let’s be honest, I was likely busy submerging myself face deep into a pitcher of Sangria.) My hope is that I’ve been able to give you a bit of new knowledge to the different brews out there —beyond our macro and micro breweries in the US— & that if you do find yourself venturing out to new and strange places, that you’ll seek out and try the local brew offerings even if you don’t have a clue as to what the can or the bottle or the draft list translates to in English, because immersing yourself in another culture is half the fun! ¡Salud!

Natural Disasters and Our Children Earthquakes, nuclear meltdowns, tsunamis and more: with cable television, it doesn't matter if these disasters are in our town or thousands of miles away. We now experience them in our own living room. As a concerned citizen, I am captivated by the round-the-clock media coverage. However, as a parent, I must consider the affect of these "disaster reports" on my children. With the constant images of destruction from recent earthquakes in Japan, my children are no longer asking me as many questions about our upcoming plans for spring break. Instead, they ask why those families don't have homes, or why can't the children find their parents. They now fear that something will happen and they'll lose their dad and I. They hold our hand a little tighter, snuggle a little closer, and never want to let us out of their sight. This reminds me of how my husband and I felt on our son's his first birthday, September 11, 2001. We held him closer, snuggled him tighter and didn't let him out of our sight either.

I think everyone has their own idea of what being “physically fit” or “healthy” is. I bet if you asked ten different people to give you a definition, you would get ten very different answers. Have you ever wondered if you are physically fit? Have you ever asked someone you know if they consider you to be healthy? Just because someone looks fit doesn’t necessarily mean that they are. For all you know they may not even be able to run down to the mailbox and back! On the contrary, someone who looks unhealthy and appears to be overweight and out of shape could actually be in better physical condition than you! Yes, it’s true. Interesting, isn’t it. According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, physical fitness is defined as “a set of attributes that people have or achieve that relates to the ability to perform physical activity.” This description goes well beyond being able to run fast or lift heavy weights. Despite being important, these attributes only address single areas of fitness. A good working definition of physical fitness would be your physical abilities, general health, and resistance to illness or injury. Do you feel that you meet all of these criteria? At the moment you may not feel like you do. It’s been a rough cold and flu season for us Central New Yorkers!

Wonder continued from pg 11 outward appearances, is having personal struggles of her own. She loves her brother, but at the same time, from the moment he was born, he has emerged the focal point of the family. Via is intelligent, likable, and kind, but her best friend seems to have moved on, and her seemingly picturesque high school existence is anything but. In the capable hands of Vidovic, the character brings depth and tenderness to a supporting character who is just as pivotal to the success of the film as Tremblay’s Auggie. As far as Tremblay is concerned, he is truly a wonder, indeed. Unrecognizable behind the incredible makeup work of Arjen Tuiten (who was nominated for an Academy Award for his efforts) the talented, breakout star from ROOM captures the essence of the character originally created by author R.J. Palacio. The difficulties he faces are heart-wrenching, yet he tackles them with a resiliency that is both inspiring, and unfathomable. His parents, played expertly by Roberts and Wilson, are there to support him every step of the way, but even their affection and encouragement can only take him so far. It is Auggie who must face the relentless cruelty of some of his classmates, while at the same time, learning the true meaning of friendship and hope. Tackling sensitive issues such as familial love, friendship, heartache, and bullying, WONDER could have dissolved into the typical meloJulia Roberts and Jacob Tremblay as adoring mother and son in Wonder dramatic slog that produces far more eye rolling than smiles. Instead, it remains engaging and charming throughout, largely in part to the excellent cast. There are a number of difficult moments, particularly due to the inevitable bullying that Auggie faces. This may be difficult for some to watch, yet at the same time, it’s an imperative lesson for the tween crowd to see. The unjust torment that Auggie faces is appalling, but unfortunately, remains a real crisis for countless student’s across the globe. While there is obviously some thematic elements to the production, there is very little offensive content that would dissuade families from watching WONDER together. This allows the film to reach the widest audience possible, and helps place a lovable face on a number of difficult issues facing children today. (Now available on BluRay and DVD.)

Too Much Down Time
I’m sure most of you have heard the phrase sitting is the new smoking. At the end of the day, many of us find ourselves slumped over on the couch watching television. Spending too much time sitting in front of the TV is bad for the body (especially the heart), even if you are exercising on a daily basis. How many hours a night do you spend in front of the TV? Yes, video games count. Scientists have suggested that limiting TV time to less than two hours a day could add almost a year and a half to our life expectancy. Unfortunately, most of us spend more than two hours a day in front of the box.

In general, fitness means different things to different people. The important take home message is that embarking on any regular exercise program will be a big benefit to your health. It’s simply too risky to be out of shape! It’s worth your time and effort to be more active. Good health and physical fitness can truly make a big difference in your life now and in the long-term. We as individuals hold the greatest responsibility for our own health. Whatever the most important reasons to exercise are for you (improved fitness, better health, an upcoming wedding, a vacation or personal satisfaction), use them to stay inspired and motivated! That way you can enjoy all the benefits of a better quality of life and significantly lower health risks. The reasons to exercise and maintain a healthy diet go far beyond a trim waistline and a perky butt. Your daily well-being, long term health, and even your life span depend in part on how well you take care of YOU. So take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live! Good luck to you. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Place ham in a roasting pan. In a small saucepan, combine brown sugar, pineapple juice, honey, orange juice, orange zest, Dijon mustard, and ground cloves. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes. Set aside. Bake ham in preheated oven uncovered for 2 hours. Remove ham from oven, and brush with glaze. Bake for an additional 30 to 45 minutes, brushing ham with glaze every 10 minutes.
