Kyle and I arrived at Avicolli’s on a bustling Saturday night. We were immediately greeted by the friendly hostess and seated in a comfortable booth. Our friendly and knowledgeable server helped us decide between some of the delicious menu options! An awesome feature at Avicolli’s is that you can create your own pasta dish where you select your pasta, your sauce, and any extras! What a Feeling

Edgar Pagan Releases New Album Many of you are familiar with Grupo Pagan and therefore Edgar Pagan. If you’ve spent any time near this guy you’ve become immediately aware of his positive nature and his exuding positive vibe. It feels good to be in his company... one of those people who seemingly refuses to bitch, or speak poorly of people in their absence—if at all—and I’ve never seen him behave “exclusively” (as though its ‘your’ privilege to be in his company or some sort of cool-kid club). Rather, Edgar is extremely “inclusive” in his nature because he understands with great maturity that honoring the company he’s in at any particular moment is his privilege; not theirs. This, to me, is not only wise, the “real” cool, but refreshing... not just in the music business, but also in adulthood in general. And this is why every time he comes up in conversation, it is always noted that he’s a cool guy. His reputation precedes him in the right way. The reason I point this out is not because we’re pals. It because I know all of this intrinsically manifests itself as the basis for the quality of this music. I’ve been doing this a long time, myself. I can hear the difference between somebody who simply likes being on stage, receiving attention, surfing the

And if nobody minds my saying so, I think It also makes a great “make out” record in that it is sonically luscious flowing from groove to groove— whether it’s a sultry groove or a more danceable groove. Its all connected to soul and is emotionally tangible. And it sounds freaking great. I took a little time with Edgar to talk about this work and to offer more insight. CS: Good afternoon, Edgar. Thanks for making a record. And thank you for sharing it with us. How did this all come about? What Inspired the album? Edgar Pagan: I’ve been contemplating doing an album of my own for some time. I’ve been fortunate enough to meet so many talented artists over the past few years that had voiced an interest in working on a project together. CS: I will take this opportunity then to butt-in and voice my same interest for a future write. The song ‘Show the World’ was recorded with a choir live in Tokyo, Japan. EP: (chuckling....) ok. Sounds good! This allowed me the flexibility to do just that. To incorporate an inspiration to arrive, or having the keen awareness to notice diamonds different styles and influences. The ABC’s of CNY’s Craft Beer Scene: Part Two Last month we took a look at the various local craft beer groups that focus on community and sharing, socializing, and learning more about the many aspects of craft beer from the basics to sharing bottles of hard to find special beers (also known as whales). It’s been a real treat to learn about groups like the Syracuse Craft Beer Enthusiasts, Syracuse Girls’ Pint Out and the CNY Craft Beer Society. Along with the Syracuse Women of Craft Beer, these groups have so much to offer and are very welcoming to all. Here’s the continuation of my dialogues with Tony Cimpi, Nick LaPlant, Stacey Juston, Zoe Rodriguez, and Michelle Berthelot Giraud. GAR: How have your experiences in the craft beer community shaped your perspective on the subject? TC & NL: Craft beer has several pros and cons. Pros include more variety, availability, and diversity in beers. The cons include a hefty increase in price as more and more consumers come into the market and the occasional person who tries to profit dramatically from every beer. SJ: The people I’ve met on my journey have and continue to impact me personally every day. This is one, if not the most, open and accepting group of people I’ve ever

MBG: There’s always something new to learn in the craft beer world and craft beer enthusiasts are more than happy to share their knowledge. Some of the friendliest people we’ve met have been through beer, whether it’s at a SWCB meeting, a bottle share with friends, or talking to fellow visitors at a brewery, we always have a great conversation and learn something new. ZR: One of my favorite things as a chef is to pair food with drinks and pairing craft beer with food is spectacular. I have been in the food and beverage industry for years and many establishments’ bar staff don’t usually expect women to know their stuff when it comes to craft beer or even actually to like beer. My Bookshelf I changed my cover photo on Facebook recently; the image was one of my barrister’s bookcase (I have about 12 and I just got a couple more for all those books on the floor). I studied it recently, and was intrigued by the books that I found there. I read a lot of books that I don’t keep —I pass them on or donate them. And of course there’s my Kindle books. But I have many books that I have just because. Because I feel better knowing I can pick them up any time I want and re-read them, glance through them to refresh my memory, or simply feel good having them around. So I thought I’d share with you some of my “I must have this book on my bookshelf” books. In no particular order: 1984 by George Orwell. This book is one that I make a point of reading every year because it reminds me of some very important things: like, the meaning of words. The manipulation of “truth.” Our willingness to succumb to blandishments and punishments. Encyclopedia of British Literature, and Encyclopedia of American Literature. Now, granted, the volumes I have are dated —much has been written since they were published. But they are valuable nevertheless as they ex-

If I could pick one person from history to have dinner with, he’d surely be on my top 10 list. For a similar reason, I have Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad on my shelf. The ABC’s of CNY’s Craft Beer Scene: Part Two continued from pg 12 some growlers to go or asking for a stout beer. There are quite a few of us out there who know a thing or two about beer! GAR: What do you think makes CNY unique when it comes to craft beer? TC: CNY is unique in that the farmstead laws are generating a lot of local hop farms bringing hop farming back to an area historically known for growing hops. NL: CNY is booming right now in terms of growth. The number of beer bars, breweries and the like is increasing at a rate that is unheard of. It will be interesting to see where the market settles out, but for now we encourage everyone to try all the new things! ZR: CNY’s craft beer is magical in the way that businesses and brewery owners support each other, how the love for the local product is something of great importance. SJ: We just love beer. Syracuse and its surrounding areas have over a hundred years of brewing history. In the 1800s Syracuse had around 40 breweries and kept that going until the longest running brewery finally closed its door in 1962. With the boom of the craft beer culture, we’re returning to our brewing roots. We have around ten breweries here in Onondaga alone, and most of those opened in the last few years. The rise of hop farms, grain farms, malt houses and such is only encouraging and supporting the consistent growth of breweries. Our city hosts multiple beer festivals throughout the year, with more planned each year. You can barely go a month without at least one beer focused festival occurring within an hour’s drive. GAR: How has craft beer impacted your life? TC: I have scheduled vacations and routes to pick up beers. This group takes up a good chunk of time also. NL: I got to meet a lot of new people here in CNY. Also, it’s fun to surprise people with craft beers they haven’t had before but want to try. ZR: Craft beer is very important to me and to my family, it has been part of our daily routine for almost nine years and also our source of income. I became a craft beer enthusiast in 2008 while working as a chef on a brewpub that required me to cook the menu items with craft beer. There I also met my husband who was the brewer there at the time and now currently the head brewer of Good Nature Brewing. SJ: Honestly, it has become my life (sales rep for Schmaltz Brewing Co., beer writer, CNY CBS founder). My job is focused on beer and my activities are usually beer related. I have shelves of beer in my basement, cook with beer in more ways than I ever thought you could. I think about what beer will go best with my meals like others do with wine. I love beer and the industry; I can’t see myself doing anything else

Syracuse Women of Craft Beer again as a career. It may have taken me 20 years to get there, but it was worth it. MBG: My passion for craft beer and the influence of some of my best beer buddies helped me make the decision about eight months ago to leave my career and work in the beer industry (she works for three local breweries). When I asked my husband what he thought about this kind of career change he said, “it has great fringe benefits.” I haven’t regretted it yet! What’s Up With Facebook? and A Scam Big news about Facebook and “trending” news skullduggery recently forced the social media giant to remove the “human” element of deciding what was trending and what wasn’t. Think about that: computers do one thing infinitely better that people —follow algorithms. Humans do something typically better than computers: interpret and/or make use of interpreted data. So, if Facebook (or any other platform, like Twitter) wanted to honestly let people know what other people were talking about —or even refine the information down to something like “people in Syracuse are talking about”— it would require no human intervention to simply display the data. If, however, a marketing company wanted to make use of this information, it could —and will— interpret it using a combination of understanding of human nature, previous behaviors, new products available, male versus female, what shows are popular on television, and maybe just a bit of intuition. Facebook assures us that they’ve removed the “human” gatekeepers from the trend line, and it’s now presenting “just the facts, ma’am.” Of course, none of that explains why you see one thing on your news feed and not something else. To a degree, as we’ve explained on these pages before, if and how you react will help determine what you see in the future. But all you have to do is go to a friend’s page and you’ll note immediately that the vast majority of what they post doesn’t end up on your newsfeed —even if you sit and faithfully watch it all day. The Winds of Change Along Cayuga Lake As many of you know, the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail is the first organized and longest running wine trail in America. As part of our marketing, we recently adopted the tagline “Taste a Bit of History” to tie in our exceptional wines with the deep rooted (pun intended) history which began as early as the 1970s when some of the first vineyards were planted. Between our 16 wineries, we have some incredible stories of the way things used to be and how they have changed over time. As Matt Damon once said, “History is change happening one person at a time.” Like all things, the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail continues to change, one person at a time. Hosmer Winery, in particular, is going through a very exciting period of transition. The end of the year was also the end of winemaker Aaron Roisen’s time at Hosmer. He spent December working alongside newcomer, Julia Hoyle, showing her the ins and outs of the winemaking facility. Julia Hoyle joined the Hosmer team as the new head winemaker as of the first of the year. Roisen has since transitioned to the winemaking team at Three Brothers Wineries and Estates. “I consider the past 9 years that I have been making wine at Hosmer to be the most formative and influential ofW myINERY winemaking and I would certainly not &career BISTRO be the winemaker I am today without the support of the Hosmer team,” states Aaron Roisen, winemaker at Hosmer Winery from August 2007 to December 2016. “I cannot

She is one of the most talented and recognized up and coming winemakers in the Finger Lakes and a perfect fit for Hosmer.” Born in Philadelphia, Julia found herself in the Finger Lakes by way of Hobart and William Smith Colleges where she studied French and Women’s Studies. After her college degree she spent time abroad both in France (Avignon, teaching English) and in Senegal. In 2009, as a college student, she took a job in the tasting room at Fox Run vineyards on Seneca Lake. After a couple of years working there, her interest in winemaking took her from the tasting room into the cellar. After working at Fox Run, Julia spent a harvest in the cellar at Atwater Winery before taking a full time position as assistant winemaker at Sheldrake Point Winery in December of 2013. From January to April of 2015 she took a sabbatical to work in South Australia as the night shift white wine maker at Yalumba Winery, Australia’s oldest family winery. She then returned to Sheldrake Point where she had been until her transition to Hosmer Winery. Julia’s winemaking style is very consistent with the style of the former winemaker, Aaron. Focus is on the quality of fruit with as little as possible added to the wine, in order to make it reflective of the soil, grape, season, and growing condition. Julia is looking forward to working with the estate grown fruit at Hosmer Winery. When asked to name a couple things she is “stand-out excited about” she answered, “the extremely diverse and expanding Riesling portfolio” and “our estate red vinifera, especially the Hosmer Cabernet Franc”! What’s Up With Facebook? continued from pg 19 and you’d like to raise funds —this is a great way to let people know how big the need is. I recently saw a livestream introducing watchers to a dog recently arrived at a shelter in an attempt to find a home. But no sooner do we get handed a means of communicating (without talking to anybody face to face!) than it will be co-opted for commercial purposes. Already I’ve seen pitches for events, sales, products … with more to come, I’m sure. The one slight advantage we (as yet) have is that we do need to be opted in to the purveyor. So if you have liked a company or product on Facebook, you may find that you’re also being fed plugs for them. To our advantage, we can swipe left! Finally: it happened again today, and I remember my First Time. My computer froze, a siren started shrieking, and I was confronted with a screen and robotic voice telling me my computer was at risk and the only way to save it and all my sensitive information (I should absolutely NOT try to shop online!) was to call the number found in the Windows Defender (so-called) message. And I couldn’t shut the bugger down. I did a Ctrl-Alt-Del and shut down my browser, and all was well. Of course it’s a scam, but it can be unnerving. And while most of the information relating to such an event assures you there’s nothing to worry about, some of it is also false and warns you that you have been infected by a Trojan Horse or some such virus and that you need to call another number (theirs, of course) to have it removed. For the love of all that’s good and holy: do NOT call the number. Any number. Run a trusted malware program on your computer if you must, but keep in mind that nothing has really happened (and of course, you should be running behind a firewall and keeping your virus and malware software up to date). Three Words

Normally, since it’s February, I would write an article about romance and your sex life. Extolling women to understand the basic urges and needs of men and extolling men to focus more on what might make their wives happy … a personal note … some simple chore to show your appreciation. I have written about the wonders of great lubricants … even if you don’t need them the right lubricant can really spice things up. I have written about drugs like Viagra and the Coolidge effect. Yes, named after the 30th President. This is all covered territory so let me focus on something different. I want to write about myself … if you know me better perhaps you will take my writing more seriously. I have asked patients recently if they could describe themselves in three words. It’s kind of corny and artificial but it gets people thinking and thinking about yourself and your health is where it’s at for me. That’s when change happens. Reluctantly, due to recent events, and I am not talking about the election, I must tell you I now know two of MY three words. Optimistic and Cowardly … and the stories below will illustrate both. Obviously I am not proud of the cowardly part but it is what it is. Don’t run from the truth … learn from it and hopefully that’s what I have done. First the Optimistic part … I was heading into a Yoga class last week and another car pulled up and a young middle aged woman got out so we walked in together. I made some polite conversation with some line like … ”how are you tonight?” Her response was “pretty good.” Since I am an Optimist and believe your attitude is completely under your control I responded

You are going to yoga and all you bring to your practice tonight is “pretty good?” Is that all you got?“ She had a good response … ”Ask me again when we get to the stairs.” We walked in silence until I opened the door and asked again … ”How are you tonight?“ This time she responded. ”Great.” I thought this was really something … she has changed her mood or at least her perception in just 50 feet. Look how powerful the mind is. Look at the effect comments can have on people and their outlook. As an Optimist perhaps I should have stopped there but of course I could not stop myself and had to again say to her … ”Great?! Is that all you got?” Wasn’t I satisfied with her transitioning from pretty good to great? Where do you go from great? I think this holds true both Northern & Southern Region for your physical health and your mental health. Exercise Vs. Diet: The Truth About Weight Loss Which is most important when it comes to shedding those extra pounds, exercise or diet? This is a question that has left us confused, perplexed, and feeling defeated for decades. Are we supposed to start exercising as often and as much as we can? Should we focus solely on what we’re putting in our mouths? Maybe we should try to juggle both exercise and diet at the same time? Losing weight is simple, right? “Eat less, move more.” It sounds good on paper, but “life” and the many obstacles it brings (such as time, energy, selfdiscipline, and money) seem to always get in the way.

The Low Down on Calories

At a physiological level, weight loss and weight gain revolve around caloric consumption and expenditure. Put simply, we lose weight when we eat fewer calories than we expend. Conversely, we gain weight when we eat more calories than we expend. In order to lose one pound of fat, we must create a 3,500 calorie deficit, which can be achieved either through exercise or diet. Let’s say that a 200 pound woman wants to lose one pound in a week.

Losing weight is simple, right? “Eat less, move more.” It sounds good on paper, but “life” and the many obstacles it brings seem to always get in the way.

Through exercise alone, she needs to run about 3.5 miles per day, assuming her diet stays the same. Through dieting alone, she needs to cut back 500 calories a day, given her exercise regime stays the same. Theoretically, the two should achieve the same results. In the “real world” most of us don’t live in a house with a gym, our own personal chef, a nutritionist, and a personal trainer. Instead, we’re left about our own devices in everyday life.

What about simultaneously exercising & accounting for dietary intake?

One study, published in the International Journal of Obesity and Related Metabolic Disorders, took trained subjects and had them track dietary intake continued on pg 26

Exercise Vs. Diet continued from pg 25 along with energy expenditure. On paper, there was an overall caloric deficit created by the subjects. However, when researchers examined empirical changes, no weight was actually lost. As it turns out, subjects were simultaneously underestimating caloric intake and overestimating caloric expenditure.

Why Exercise-Focused Regimens are Relatively Ineffective for Weight Loss

Calorie expenditure through exercise is relatively small in the grand scheme of things. This is primarily because people are horrible estimators of calories in vs. calories out.

How to Effectively Incorporate Diet and Exercise

Both fitness and food choices are vital for long-term weight control. The National Weight Control Registry, established in 1994 by scientists at the University of Colorado and Brown Medical School, is following more than 10,000 Americans who have lost weight and kept it off for years. Just 1% kept the pounds off with exercise alone, 10% did it with diet alone, and 89% used both. Most people I see struggle far more with their kitchen than with their gym. They’ll willingly find thirty minutes or more a day to hit the gym, go for walks, or simply up their daily activity, but when it comes to packing a lunch, prepping ingredients, cooking dinner, or keeping a food journal it’s like pulling teeth. If weight’s a primary concern, ditching the kitchen to find time for the gym is a bad idea! Instead take the total amount of time you think you’re willing to spend in the gym, and dedicate at least a third of that to the kitchen.

Doing less exercise consistently is better than doing more intermittently. Spending two to three minutes a day with a food diary is likely to have a

bigger impact on your weight than thirty minutes a day in the gym. It’s also important to change what you eat, and not just count calories.

Eating More, Weighing Less

It’s not about setting for less. You can fill your plate with an abundance of food and still lose weight! You just need to make food choices that give you the most satiety per calorie, foods such as: • Fresh fruits • Fresh vegetables • Water-rich whole grains like hot cereals and brown rice • Starchy vegetables like potatoes, corn, It’s not about setting for less. Unfortunately, it’s much easier to eat five hundred calories than it is to burn it off. I’m not saying that exercise isn’t important. I’m saying that if you absolutely have to choose between the two, the evidence is clear that diet plays a much bigger role in weight loss. The only sure way to lose weight and keep it off is to burn more calories than you take in, which is nearly impossible to do unless you change your eating habits. So are you better off eating a salad than hitting the gym? I’m thinking maybe so.

In Conclusion:

The people who are most successful at making a “lifestyle change” are those who embrace both consistency and imperfection. Sure you might have a mind’s eye idea of what your healthy lifestyle should look like when you’re done, but getting there will take a lot of hard work and have its fair share of setbacks. If you’ve started a fitness routine but haven’t seen the weight-loss success you’d hoped for, you may be missing an important piece of the puzzle. While a good diet and regular exercise are both important for long-term weight loss, the food choices you make may be more important that the amount of exercise you’re doing. Remember: “You can’t out-train a bad diet!” Let’s keep exercising, but even more importantly, let’s place more emphasis on encouraging people to make better food choices. In the end, losing weight is about small victories. Everything you do adds up to create huge accomplishments and meaningful change. It’s not an easy road, but the payoff is huge. Good luck to you! a mouse tripped the trap and I made plans to take care of the trap when I got home after work that night. When I returned to the trap that night I saw that the trap had moved a few inches. Well, I thought, the poor thing must have had some death throes, sorry about that, little fellow … As I reached for the trap I was more than a little surprised when the mouse moved! At closer inspection it seemed that the trap sprung not on its neck where it would have killed it instantly but sprung on the mouse’s snout and the mouse was not dead but was struggling in the trap. Now what!!!? Well, as you read this you each have a suggestion. Hit it with a hammer was suggested. Use the no-kill traps next time was mentioned. Flush it down the toilet was suggested. Bring it outside in the cold and that will finish him off. Somehow free the mouse from the trap and let the poor thing go free … (not going to happen even though I felt terrible because I didn’t want the mouse to crawl off and die in the walls and that makes a real smell for weeks.) Well, I stood there with the cabinet door open feeling very sorry for the mouse and pondering my options … I didn’t think then about bringing the creature outside or flushing it and I know I couldn’t bring myself to smash the mouse like a real man would. I should have taken some definitive action to end the mouse’s suffering … but I didn’t … the coward that I am, I just closed the cabinet door and said to myself come back in 12 hours and this should all be over. That was a simple answer but I still feel it was the cowardly answer. Here I am doing Jujitsu weekly and happily trying to triangle choke and arm bar people but I couldn’t bring myself to dispatch a mouse. I still don’t know what this incident says about me but I felt very bad for the mouse and was saddened at my inability to step up and finish off the mouse. When I went back the next day the mouse had finally died. Maybe I am more squeamish than cowardly but either way it’s not the best side of me. Well, it gives me something to work on besides my waistline. Maybe it helps the readers of this column understand that everything is not just cut and dried in medicine or in real life. That we all have some vulnerability or some sensitivity and perhaps that’s not always a bad thing. I’m just happy I wasn’t fur trapping or facing down some raccoon. So Optimistic but cowardly … those are two of my three words … I haven’t decided on the third word yet and I am not in a rush. I asked a patient to give me his three words and he was struggling so his wife chimed in that she could describe her husband in 4 words. Ok I said … let’s hear them. Now this is a thoughtful, educated woman so I expected some deeply meaningful verbiage. However, I was a little surprised by her 4 words: ”PAIN IN THE ASS!” I have not, by the way, asked MY wife to suggest the third word but it might make some interesting dinner conversation. What are YOUR three words. Do you mean them? Do you live them? Enough of the philosophical. Next month we will return to some more mundane medical issue. Until then … Get well … Stay well.

Erich & Mickey’s Goodtime Saloon

While Mickey’s Goodtime Saloon has been around for a while, Mickey Vendetti reopened the original location on Galster Avenue. This year, Erich Schmidtmann partnered with Vendetti to reclaim the Saloon’s Goodtime reputation. “What we want to do here is give people a comfortable place to eat and hang out. We’ve always been known for good music and good food, but now we have some new attractions like steel darts, and pickled appetizers.” The other feature that makes Erich & Mickey’s successful is their 7-day-a-week operation. They’re open on Monday through Thursday from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and then from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM; Friday and Saturday hours are 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM, and Sunday from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM. “When I decided to reopen, I wanted to go back to my origins. I’ve had lots of other places that were successful, but this place reminded me of where I came from. I learned to cook from my grandfather, which has always provided a living for me and my family.” With his grandfather, Antonio Peluso, as his mentor, Vendetti knew he’d always be employed. One of his sons now runs the new Erick & Mickey’s, and his niece is one of the bartenders. “It’s a family business with family food and good prices. I try to keep the prices down so the whole family can enjoy a meal out without breaking the bank.” Unlike some of his other adventures, the Goodtime Saloon offers more than just a bar operation —you can enjoy lots of homemade meals such as meatloaf and gravy, haddock bites, calzones,

juicy hamburgers and homemade soups. If you want to find out what the special of the day is, simply go to their Facebook page and find it posted there. There’s something for every palette! I asked Vendetti when he plans to retire, and he simply laughed and replied, “I tried that already a couple of times, but I got bored. It only took me a few days to finish my ‘honey do’ list, and I’m not the kind of guy to just sit around. It’s probably why I’ve tried so many other businesses.” Since 1977, he’s owned or managed staff at Hillside, Roundhouse Restaurant, Mother’s Cupboard diner, Mickey’s Goodtime Saloon and NYS Fair food stand, Moby Dick Deli, Harbor Lodge Restaurant, Vendetti’s Lakeview Restaurant, Barney Google’s Goodtime Bar, Gilligan’s “Goodtime” Pub and Goodtime Banquet Hall and catering services. In 2014, Vendetti opened Vendetti’s Soft Rock that had a strict music venue. “There was bar food and drink available at a good price, but the main attraction was the music. It had a nice little stage where local bands could recapture the music from the Beatles, Bee Gees, Eagles, Joplin, Garcia, Marley and more. The folks were up close and personal so it was an intimate venue for music lovers.” At 73, Venditti decided to pare down his operations to just the one location. However, Vendetti’s passion for music hasn’t changed, but he no longer has the space for live music. There’s always something playing to keep the crowd happy, and there are DJs for special occasions. “It just wouldn’t be my operation if there wasn’t music. My son, Josh, joined my band a few years ago, and it’s been great. We still play for weddings, anniversaries, and such with Mickey’s Goodtime Band.” He was very proud to admit that it’s his kids that keep him going. – “I love having my family around me whether it’s here at the saloon or if it’s playing in the band. I enjoy working around my family and I hope to pass onto them what I’ve learned.” What has Vendetti learned? He learned that the food industry is the place where you can start from nothing and find success. He found that it’s a skill you can take anywhere and find work!

So what’s next for Mickey? Well, there’s no new locations, but now he’s planning a Grand Re-opening party on Super Bowl Sunday. As usual, the party will be done in his larger than life style! Vendetti is featuring a Free Pig Roast!!! The game will be on all the TVs and everyone is welcome to the pig roast FREE!!! That’s more than generous, but that’s how Mickey rolls. I didn’t have a chance to try the cuisine, but I plan to go back on Super Bowl Sunday. As a professional in the food industry, I promised a follow-up critique of the pig roast, but that will have to wait until next month’s article. For now, I plan to attend the Super Bowl Grand Reopening, and I’ll be there to see how Erich & Mickey’s Goodtimes roll!

My Mind To Yours

Rallying Redux I attended the Syracuse Sister Rally held on January 21 at the James M. Hanley Federal Building. I always vote but rarely attend rallies, and, two or three times, considered and reconsidered before I attended this one. Still, Saturday morning the sun was out; I needed a daily walk; and I figured the distance to and from where I parked my car would do. While people often gather together with people of like mind, the placards at the rally reflected diversity. The rally was not ideologically monolithic. My experience is that even amid people of like minds, I often feel like an outsider. My participation in health care discussions usually results in my delivering a compare-and-contrast presentation of what medical insurance was like in the USA, Canada, England and France just prior to when the first HMO models were being introduced here. I like to start with terms and definitions so discussions don’t go off into the weeds, which, I myself often seem to do with my comparing and contrasting and my need for common understanding of terms and definitions used in the discussion. Right now, I know that I’m thinking out loud on paper about how I think. Let me try to get out of the weeds. At the rally, I stood behind a sign that read “Love.” I like love. Yet, history shows that love of family, love of country and love of self don’t always manifest as ”Love,” as in compassion and understanding. Our positive human inclination to make things better leads to our seeking to problem-solve. Many if not most problems are deep rooted and systemic and sadly, it’s easier to see who manifests a problem than what

The Syracuse Sister Rally held on January 21 at the James M. Hanley Federal Building. It reflected positive engagement, reason and love. the problem is. I want to go into a discussion of how culture plays out in brain function but I won’t. I will share this observation: one of the Women’s Rally speakers forcefully characterized as authoritarian and disgusting the behavior of some local authorities, mentioning by name one such authority no longer in authority. Her forceful expressions of disgust triggered some clapping at the points in her talk when clapping seemed called for, but my perception was that most of the people I saw seemed to quiet down, seemingly resistant to the rage. Not all rallies are like that. Anger and rage can be catchy, feels powerful in the moment, and usually clouds rational thought. Happily, the gathering at Syracuse’s Sister Rally reflected positive engagement, reason and love. Systems matter. Authoritarian ideation stands on and depends on emotional reactions to instilled fear while authoritative/permissive thinking follows information and discussion. History proves that authoritarians exist on the right and on the left. Nonetheless, the term liberal wouldn’t apply to an authoritarian. Authoritarians, left and right, right and wrong, believe in their right to force their will on others. Frequently, individuals schooled and disciplined with threats and anger grow up to become angry themselves, or too accommodating to aggressors, or both. Learned helplessness in the face of oppression can result in passive aggressive sarcasm, backhand remarks and other manipulative behavior. Femininity is too often associated with these indirect methods of communication. Gender bias manifests in most systems. Bullies use slang for women’s private parts to put down women and men alike. The pink cats’ ears pussy hats worn by many Women’s Rally participants grabbed back the objectifying power of that one slur. Good. As the rally wound down, organizers asked attendees to tell the person next to them why we were there. For a couple seconds, I couldn’t come up with an answer. Then, both of us laughing, the man next to me and I both said to each other, almost in unison, lots of reasons! The new president and some media suggested that those who attended the rallies should have voted as if we had not. Over two and one half million people voted for the new president’s opposition; this fact says something that needs to be remembered and repeated. The demographics of who voted for whom tell a story; and, who didn’t vote? Clearly, calls to make America great again were more effective rallying voters this election than were discussions about income inequality, a term developed by Italian sociologist and statistician Corrado Gini, that refers to the range continuum between the highest and lowest paid workers in a nation, and, not to situations involving street poets not earning the same income as heart surgeons. I know – boring – but factual! However, in a never-ending election cycle, I am certain there is someone rallying somewhere an alternate fact. Knowledge is still power. Where love is, there are answers.

A Message for D-R-U-G C-O-U-R-T & Local Magistrates I have come to know several of you over the years and I hope at these times that I have earned a regard that will give me your attention for this brief article. If you do read it, I believe you will consider these thoughts and perhaps take steps that will improve the fate and providence of your charge. I offer the difficulty and the solution. I am into my senior years. If one sees things with their best judgement tempered with just compassion the wisdom of age can have great value. This little column affords me a unique opportunity to share. I humbly offer you this wisdom applying human quality as best as can be done with my abilities. It seems to me that you should be the protectors of your elite profession. I believe this is central to the high esteem of your profession. Sometimes things need to be designed in a way that lights our inner beacon. It is those involved in law, more than any other that give value to all the crimson sacrifice that has protected our founding decency. When something this grave is in place you must, for your charge and for the honor of your days, use the intelligence and power available to you to change things. As you know, considerations that fall within the range of fighting Drugs and Drug addiction are extremely complex. From American Saturation with drugs to the southern border to pharmaceuticals that reward Doctors for prescribing OxyContin for sniffles and everything in between. As I do not want to dilute this effort I am going to concentrate on one local grave inadequacy that we can change. First I would like to offer why you may want to regard my view. I will tell you a little about myself and how and where my thinking matured. I am the former City Manager for the Western Union Telegraph Company in Syracuse. 11 promotions in 8 years. Later I ran a Blue Collar bar downtown for 11 years and drove a taxi 12 hour shifts, for 6 years at night. I knew and understand drug dealers and their victims. I was born in Hyde Park, NY. My Father was the clockmaker for Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. He also worked for the Vanderbilt’s and the Astor’s who lived in the area. We had a maid. My first forming 10 years were in this very upscale environment. I explain this as I want to emphasize how the perversity of addiction destroys. I am trying to show that there is much innocence to this pursuit of self-destruction. Imagine how much more difficult it is for those who form in anguish, impoverished neighborhoods, poor parenting and daily exposure. No one does this intentionally. By the time I was 10 my Mom and Dad had lost it all. They had become serious and complete alcoholics. We moved 27 times before I was 17. Mostly evictions. I became a severe alcoholic and also paid the full price. I am 35 years removed from this hell and the addicted beautiful people that once yearned with innocent hope for all that is contained within human beauty. And instead are now being consumed by a force that chews that beauty to pieces. Be it life depletion due to drugs or penal consequence. I have also learned with certainty that penal consequence does not apply and has no value for those whose plight falls within the true scope of addictive behavior. Rather, jail is cruel, as much mitigating

The seeds of recovery need to be stirred and often planted, creating knowledge, and hope, and pathway until the fight is found inside. innocence applies that warrants compassionate consideration. Jail simply adds to feelings of self-degradation and provides grave suffering for those in pain Strong people that have never weakened in a true or similar sense, sometimes strongly feel they cannot perceive how addiction can force one to do such things. When that happens it is tragic, as truth is removed in keeping with the strength of that thinking. Believe me, the awesome power of addiction is true. I have lived every wrenching, mind altered moment. You will go for the drug as your children pay the price. You will continue your pursuit knowing your career is on the line. You will use as your divorce is being filed. You will get your drug. Your job, your love, your friends, all that is good will leave you. You will still get your drug. Nothing will stop you except death or a wisdom inducing intervention that reaches that part of submerged good sense that is struggling to survive. This article is about your option at often the absolute most critical and important moment in an addict’s life, (that moment before the Judge) that is currently not only being wasted but gravely harming the user even further. Please don’t take offense. This has nagged at the conscience of many of you. Those that legislate have not correctly embraced the heart and ramifications of the problem and have left you alternative that most often does not apply. Simply because fairness, justice and empathy are not served. Their moment with you is as important as a life a preserver to someone drowning. Jail in most instances is like lining it with lead and sends them further into the pit of despair. While researching for this article I found that Massachusetts has already taken a vital first step. They have embraced the reality that narcotics and alcohol addiction are a public health emergency and not a crime. Women who have substance abuse cases are no longer taken to criminal prison. They’re taken to civil commitment facilities. This is a small inadequate first step. We need bolder action as this disease is destroying every day. There is no reasonable movement away from incarcerating people from applicable narcotics offenses. When something that does not exist that is crucial, one critical component can make it happen: Leaders Your profession is wisely and deservedly designed around an aurora of reverence and respect. You insure and enhance social justice and quality. You are the best of who we are and your deeds must reflect this acclaim. Anything that causes a departure from judicial fairness is unacceptable. “Fitting” compassion in the drug arena causes fairness rather than an unequal distribution of justice. And because the system does not give you the right tools your purpose and value in drug cases is often not only neutralized but your profession is reduced to playing a destructive role in already broken lives. This is a harsh grave reality that cries from great suffering to be seen. Every second in jail that is undeserved diminishes all that is good. The following is idea. It is guideline. It is a way to get there. I was in the Green Berets. Actually a good number in your profession have that kind of thinking. And it will require that kind of can do, elite, getting it done, failure is unacceptable attitude.

I might add it helps tremendously to recognize that this kind of attitude is contagious and brings out the best in everyone and will enhance support with the key people in Government needed to makes this happen. The beauty of this idea is that you are highly respected. You have friendships and influence among our leaders. Many of you are our leaders. If you get a dozen or so of your peers on board and continue to expand people will listen. Your profession alone can achieve this. The goal: Develop and submit legislation to “Replace current applicable drug incarceration practices locally with a confinement rehabilitation facility and option.” What I am proposing here is that a group of Magistrates and/or Barristers develop a think tank for this purpose. Brainstorm how to determine appropriate need. Drug court is a wonderful effort and does help some victims. Yet its value is restrained by the complexity and difficulty of recovery. Only a small percentage of drug users or alcoholics are able to meet their demands. Failures are jailed, emotionally diminished and almost always offend again. And for them, nothing of value has been achieved. With drug and alcohol offense, every moment of jailing must embrace compassion and leniency born of our finest patience and wisdom. It is a complex arena and requires our very best. In any event, without intensive effort only a few percent of addicts recover. They desperately need this recovery experience to begin at sentencing. We need to develop a facility and make law compatible with recovery rather than punishment. This confinement facility should be built to embrace longer term confinements to accommodate associated crime and to better insure recovery. A year in rehab would be priceless for serious addiction. Whereas a year in jail enhances criminality and self-loathing. The think tank should consider all of these ramifications. Addicts are imbedded in a powerful drug culture. This vital step is a vital component in the series of emotional triggers that each individual must undergo at their own pace, until recovery is underway. For many it will be their only chance to avoid years of addiction as a social burden and usually an early death. If need and economics are compatible you may want to consider partnering with one or more other counties. If you are successful Central New York can be the beacon for others to seek state and or federal funding for rehab-facilities in lieu of jailing, designed around recovery and social assimilation. Converting or adding to Jamesville may be a good idea. How this affects employment will be a major question. Fortunately this aspect of the idea can be met with great success and improvement. Prison guards will also work at the rehab facility. It would be invaluable to offer them specialized rehab training. There are those that are not attracted to the social work aspect. They should be utilized in the real criminal environment. Many will choose the rehab. This can be done not only protecting Sheriff’s and Correctional Guards but by providing attractive options that may also include specialty pay and at the same time offering varied suitable, needed, and skilled quality to current employees. In this space I can only hope to offer inspiring idea. The think tank made up of your peers will develop state of the art thinking and course. Once the think tank is confident it has arrived at sound conclusions it is time to write legislation. On one hand you will be seeking funding. On the other you will be revising law compatible with this effort. The easier you make it for a legislator the better your chances. Too much peripheral idea can dilute the main thrust and could endanger passage. Legislation developed by a think tank from your profession will garner attention like no other. If you so decide, this will happen. I would like to leave you with this. Much law is faulty or inadequate. Law is simply rules written by a concerned or disgruntled legislator and either justly or unjustly Treatment, Not Incarceration passed. Rib-Eye Steak with Garlic Compound Butter Recipe by CHUNGAH RHEE Ingredients: Rib-Eye Steaks, 4 (12-ounce), 1-1/4-inch-thick, at room temperature (T-bone, filet mignon or New York strip can also be used.) 4 tablespoons olive oil
