2017 Academy Awards Hollywood’s biggest night, the Academy Awards, may already be in the books, but that doesn’t mean that the Best Picture nominees should be so quickly forgotten. Here is my ranking of the entire category:

1. ARRIVAL

An invasion movie of uncommon beauty, depth, and intelligence, ARRIVAL was easily my favorite of the Best Picture nominees. Amy Adams, who should have earned a Best Actress nomination, shines as linguist Louise Banks. Assigned with the seemingly impossible task of learning how to communicate with beings inside one of the 12 spacecrafts that have landed on earth, she stands as an essential figure in humanity’s uncertain future. Nominated for 8 Academy Awards, the film is a sci-fi based drama that transcends the genre. Accessible and enjoyable to a much wider audience than you typically find with an alien adventure, it exudes a hypnotic quality that causes the viewer to hang on to every spoken word. Unlike actioners such as INDEPENDENCE DAY and BATTLE: LOS ANGELES, ARRIVAL is far more story and dialogue driven. While the creatures in the craft are essential to the plot, they are of secondary importance to the overall message of the film. This is not to say that ARRIVAL doesn’t have its fair share of thrills. The reason for the creature’s presence is constantly questioned, and with multiple crafts positioned OPEN 24 HOURS A DAY 7 DAYS A WEEK

An invasion movie of uncommon beauty, depth, and intelligence, ARRIVAL was easily my favorite of the Best Picture nominees. at various points around the globe, the threat of violence and terror lurks beneath the surface of virtually every scene. 2. LION

It is always a gamble when you rely on a child to carry a film, but that is exactly what Garth Davis’ did with his beautiful adaptation of Saroo Brierley’s book about the incredible, unexpected journey that befell him when he was just five-years-old. LION tells Saroo’s story in two stages. The first, is the seemingly impossible adventure that happened when he lost his brother at a train station near his small village in India. The second half of the production focuses on his attempts, 25 years later, to track down his long lost family. Sunny Pawar provides a performance that shatters any and all expectations that could possibly be placed on a child in a role such as this. Playing Saroo, he is precocious, resilient, and downright adorable. The audience is immediately invested in his survival from the moment he begins his staggering crosscountry trek across India. 3. MANCHESTER BY THE SEA

On the surface, MANCHESTER BY THE SEA seems to be a searing, heavy handed drama. Casey Affleck (nominated for Best Actor) plays the socially inept Lee Chandler. Working as a handyman for a collection of rental properties, he lives a simplistic, solitary life. When he receives a phone call stating that his brother (Kyle Chandler) has passed away, however, his entire way of life is tossed into turmoil. Lee discovers that his brother has made an unfathomable request in his will. Though Lee has no interest in doing so, he is named guardian of his teenage nephew, Patrick (Best Supporting Actor nominee Lucas Hedges.) Ill equipped and uninterested in being a parent, he desperately searches for a way out of his precarious predicament. MANCHESTER is full of dramatic moments, including one of the most devastating sequences of any film in 2016. As we learn more of Lee’s past, most of which involves his ex-wife Randi (Best Supporting Actress nominee Michelle Williams) we begin to learn what lead him down the path of resigned solitude. There are a number of unexpected moments that are laugh-out-loud hilarious, effectively breaking the tension without degrading the intensity that preceded it. The chemistry between Affleck and Hedges is flawless, with both characters toeing the line between love and indifference. Writer/director Kenneth Lonergan (nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director) has delivered a memorable story that

4. HELL OR HIGH WATER

Of all the films nominated for Best Picture, HELL OR HIGH WATER is perhaps the most pleasant surprise on the entire list. Set against the desolate and sprawling dusty planes of West Texas, the story centers around two brothers (Chris Pine and Ben Foster) who rob banks in order to save the family farm. Hot on their heels is Texas lawman Marcus Hamilton (Best Supporting Actor nominee Jeff Bridges) who is on the precipice of retirement and dead-set on catching the nefarious bandits. He views the end of his career as a death sentence rather than a restful respite from a grizzled life spent solving crimes. Bridges, as always, is spectacular. Providing another memorable performance, he injects humor and pathos into an otherwise intense dramatic thriller. And, while it is Bridges who finds himself on the ballot, Pine and Foster are equally good. Pine, in what may be his best turn to date, takes a level headed, practical approach to crimes, whereas his hotheaded brother, perfectly portrayed by Foster, lends an air of unpredictable fury that threatens to explode at every turn. HELL OR HIGH WATHER is currently available on Blu-Ray

5. HIDDEN FIGURES

Standing as the lone family-friendly film to appear on the Best Picture ballot, HIDDEN FIGURES explores a little known story set amidst the space race that gripped the hearts and minds of the entire nation. Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monáe and Best Supporting Actress nominee Octavia Spencer star as intelligent, strong-willed women who infiltrated the male dominated world of NASA, and work towards the common goal of sending American John Glenn into orbit. As if their gender didn’t present enough problems, their race was equally problematic. Treated as outcasts by most of their peers, they found a way to persevere, and make their mark on the fledgling space program. Equality is a central theme of HIDDEN FIGURES, yet the three women are never continued on pg 4

They have to work harder than anyone else, and struggle to earn even the slightest ounce of respect, yet they are determined to help their nation in any way they can. Despite knowing the outcome of the film, HIDDEN FIGURES remains fascinating throughout. There are have been many other productions that have centered around this particular historical event and era, yet you still feel as if you are hearing the story for the very first time. This, in large part, is due to the fact that the accomplishments of these women have been lost within the annals of history. Now, thanks to this massively entertaining and satisfying film, they won’t soon be forgotten. HIDDEN FIGURES is currently available on Blu-Ray

screen adaptation for his award-winning play, FENCES. In 2016, helmed by Denzel Washington, the story of a struggling family living in Pittsburgh in the 1950’s finally found its way into theaters. Denzel Washington, who is nominated for Best Actor, plays sanitation worker Troy Maxson. Boisterous and good natured, Troy regales his wife, Rose (Best Supporting Actress nominee Viola Davis) and friend Jim (Stephen Henderson) with lively tales of his past. These stories revolve around his former baseball glory days, and the time he squared off in a battle of wits with the Grim Reaper. Despite this affable introduction to Troy, we soon learn that the truth of his nature may be far less amiable. He shows indifference to his eldest son, Lyons (Russell Hornsby) and exhibits disdain towards his youngest son Cory’s (Jovan Adepo) promising future as a college football player. The motives for these feelings are revealed throughout the duration of FENCES, and they make Troy more deplorable at every turn. Washington is a powerhouse as the overbearing and despicable Troy. He is a thundering giant who lays waste to all of those unfortunate enough to be in his presence. Conversely, Viola Davis is equally strong as the often maligned Rose. Upon the audience’s first introduction, Rose appears to be little more than the doting wife of a bombastic former ballplayer. As FENCES progresses, however, we begin to see that she is far more than the meek second fiddle to an overbearing husband. She is a fierce and resilient mother who refuses to allow Troy to destroy the bright future that Cory has before him. There is a reason that Davis dominated the award circuit season. Resilient and more than willing to put the dastardly Troy in his place, she is a matriarch who refuses to allow the deception of her husband crush the spirit of her family. FENCES has a Blu-Ray release date of March 14, 2017

7. HACKSAW RIDGE

After an extended hiatus from Hollywood, Mel Gibson made a triumphant return in 2016 with his WWII drama, HACKSAW RIDGE. The director earned an Academy Award nomination for his work, and in doing so, told a story of stunning humanity that took place amidst the bloodiest battle in the entire War. Like many men his age, pacifist Desmond Doss (Best Actor nominee Andrew Garfield) believes that it is his duty to serve his country in any way that he can. Due to his gentle nature, he decides that he would be best served as a medic. By doing this, he can help the men who need it the most, and won’t have to

pick up a gun while doing so. His refusal to engage in violence is met with disdain from the men and officers in his unit, but, rather reluctantly, he is allowed to continue his training without learning how to use a firearm. The powerful true story at the heart of Gibson’s film is remarkable. Despite his many setbacks and obstacles, Doss emerged as a hero. He was a man that put others above himself at all times, and became a bona fide hero in the process. Garfield plays Doss with a genuine sincerity, lending proper sentimentality to a complex man. Though the story is rooted in pacifism, HACKSAW RIDGE is one of the most violent films that has ever been created. The battle sequences are unrelentingly brutal and realistic, transporting the viewer directly to the battlefield. While it certainly provides and air of authenticity, the severity of the scenes diminishes the overall impact of the production. Bullets tear through flesh, grenades disembowel their victims, and flames engulf soldiers in searing clarity. Like his previous endeavors APOCOLYPTO and PASSION OF THE CHRIST, Gibson pulls no punches when presenting his version of the violent fallacy of man. HACKSAW RIDGE is now available on Blu-Ray continued on pg 6

8. LA LA LAND

Throughout the annals of cinematic history, there have only been two films that had earned 14 Academy Award nominations. As of this year, however, TITANIC and ALL ABOUT EVE have some company. Director/writer Damien Chazelle’s ode to the City of Angels, LA LA LAND as a modern musical that boasts catchy tunes, beautiful scenery, and a pair of lovable leads. Best Actress nominee Emma Stone plays Mia, a barista who longs to be an actress. Attending countless auditions in hopes of being discovered, her life changes forever when she wanders into a dimly lit piano bar. The melodic tunes entrance her, and she longs to tell the musician (Best Actor nominee Ryan Gosling) how moved she was by his music. Unfortunately, he had just been fired, and was in no mood for conversation. It isn’t until the two cross paths again at a party that their lives and relationship begins to change. The city of Los Angeles is integral to LA LA LAND and is just as much of a character as any of its human counterparts. This is made abundantly clear from the opening number, which unfolds on the L.A. Freeway. The lively, toe-tapping tune “Another Day in the Sun” is impeccably choreographed and undeniably joyous, and an undeniable feet of technical wizardry. From there, the Los Angeles way of life is on full

display. It is a town that boasts limitless promise for those with ambition, yet often delivers nothing more than catastrophic heartache. While Stone and Gosling may not have the most polished vocals that have ever graced the silver screen, their likability and chemistry far outweigh any technical deficiencies. Their relationship feels genuine and the passion they share for one another and their ambitions make them a perfect fit for one another, and LA LA LAND as a whole. LA LA LAND is currently still in theaters, and has an estimated Blu-Ray release date of May, 2017

Brew Time by GLORIA AVILES-RAKOWSKY

An Apple a Day As a native Central New Yorker, I grew up surrounded by apples—McIntosh, Macoun, Cortland, and Empire among others. Regular fall pickings were part of my childhood and adulthood, as was learning about our rich apple culture via school field trips, apple festivals, and eating cinnamon donuts with hot cider on a brisk autumn night. You might be asking, “What does any of this have to do with craft beer?” For a while, I ignored the subject of hard cider—that is, until I started sampling them at beer festivals. Apple cider at a brew fest? Yes. It may sound a bit funny if you haven’t been to a fest yet, but if you have, hard cider comfortably fits right in. While hard cider most certainly isn’t beer, it’s been gaining popularity in the craft beer community and is widely available. A few years ago, a hard cider by the name of Angry Orchard (owned by Boston Beer Company) introduced itself nationwide. I didn’t think much of it and never thought to buy any, even if it was available on tap at the local pub. I’d always opt for a beer. However,

when Angry Orchard hit the market, it sparked a memory long forgotten— only ordering Woodchuck Cider on my weekends out in Armory Square way back when. It was crisp, light, not too sweet and just tasted good. Fresh out of college and learning about beer, I opted for British selections such as Harp Lager and the mighty Guinness Stout. These were some of the choices that helped shaped my affinity for craft beverages; I quickly learned about the Snakebite, a drink made of equal parts hard cider and lager or stout. What a delicious combination! Hard cider has given me reason to take notice once again—the variety, for one, has grown beyond Woodchuck and Angry Orchard. Local apple farms are making their own delicious ciders worth trying. In an attempt to broaden my horizons and learn something new, I’ve been drinking more ciders for the past few months than ever. I don’t really like sweet beverages of any kind, but with the slightly sweet and tart qualities that many ciders have, it’s been pretty easy to enjoy these fermented apples. Critz Farms in Cazenovia’s Harvest Moon Cidery produces various hard ciders with different flavor profiles. Thanks to a generous donation, I tried Heritage Hops, a cider with a touch of hops (one of beer’s main ingre1 Village Blvd. dients). Four Screw is a Baldwinsville sweeter cider NY 13027 made with a combination of apples and WATCH ALL THE maple cider. I also had Critz’s Double Vision, a cider made with a blend of aged and fresh pressed FRIDAY FISH FRY EVERY ciders. Delicious! Preventive Medicine by DR. BARRY

Is Alzheimer’s a Form of Diabetes? Last month I got a little personal. This month I am taking you to the very cutting edge of scientific thought. There seems to be a real connection between diabetes and dementia. Someone coined the term that Diabetes Type 3. Until recently I had never heard this term. The contention is that Alzheimer’s Disease is really a brain form of diabetes. This is not really new info in the scientific community but it sure didn’t make it to the front line caregivers. The real culprit, as I understand it, is once again INSULIN. Simplistically Type 1 diabetics have no insulin and need to take shots of insulin to control their blood sugar. Insulin is a growth hormone that pushes the sugar in your bloodstream into the individual cells where they can be used. Type 2 diabetics don’t respond as well or strongly to the

Type 3 diabetes appears to be abnormal insulin effects in the brain resulting in histochemical and pathological changes identical to those found in Alzheimer’s brains. This is big big news which appears to be based on pretty good scientific underpinnings. The idea that Alzheimer’s is a form of diabetes has been around since 2005. Roughly one third of Americans have diabetes. Diabetes and dementia are both epidemic in this country and increasing over time. Whatever you are looking for Munjed’s has the perfect plate and the perfect atmosphere to meet your needs. Somehow they have managed to create an atmosphere where you could bring a date, a girl’s night out, or even a family dinner to introducing little ones to international cuisine. This atmosphere seems to have been cultivated by their trademark of “good food, good people, always.” Kyle and I went to Munjed’s on an unseasonably warm Saturday night. We were immediately seated at a cozy table under MIDDLE-EASTERN & GREEK a beautiful painted mural of the moon and stars. The Write Stuff by NANCY ROBERTS

The Women of Oz One part children’s fantasy, one part women’s history, and a couple of spoonfuls of detective work: Kathleen Sorbella Di Scenna shines a light on the women in L. Frank Baum’s Wonderful World of Oz! Di Scenna, as you may recall from another article in Table Hopping, is the Executive Director of the Lyman Frank Baum Foundation, Inc. of Syracuse. Baum’s connections to Syracuse and Central New York are deep and possibly more varied than you know—as are the more than 400 characters he created to write the many volumes of his much beloved Oz series.

Frank Baum author of The Wonderful World of Oz was born in Chittenango, NY, and grew up in Mattydale on his parents’ estate.

Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) , the heroine of the Oz stories with the Good Witch Glinda (Billie Burke) from the 1939 film version of The Wizard Of Oz.

Recently, the Hotel Syracuse opened its doors to the Foundation, which found a new home there in the lobby. The Foundation will have rotating exhibits, but one you may want to put on your “must see” list will be the exhibits Di Scenna, working with noted Rochester feminist, Carol Crossed, is preparing for the Hotel during Women’s History month this March. Women? Oz? Well, of course, we know that the heroine of the stories is Dorothy Gale, a little girl from Kansas who doesn’t make it to the storm cellar before a cyclone picks her house up, whisks it away, and deposits it magically in Oz—right on top of the Wicked Witch of the East (woman of Oz #1). And we know there is a Good Witch (Glinda). And a Wicked Witch of the West. And Dorothy’s aunt, to whom she is very anxious to return. And, if you read more of the books than just the one made famous by the Judy Garland film, you’ll know there was Ozma, another Good Witch, and a host of other female characters that populated the pages of Baum’s delightful books. Di Scenna has done some homework—and as Women’s History Month approached, she believed she had the makings of a fine exhibit: many of the women who populate Central New York’s most valiant Women of History also, she believes, are hidden in the women in Baum’s books. Baum was born in Chittenango, NY, and grew up in Mattydale on his parents’ beautiful estate, Rose Lawn. The story of the women of Oz, according to Kathleen, begins with his mother. Baum’s mother, Cynthia Ann Stanton, wealthy cousin of Henry Brewster Stanton, marries—against the wishes of her parents—poor cooper Benjamin Baum. Henry Brewster Stanton marries—you guessed it, Elizabeth Cady.

Maud became Maud Baum. Matilda Jocelyn Gage, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and of course Susan B. Anthony formed the famous triumvirate of powerful women who spearheaded the women’s suffrage movement— and, according to Di Scenna, likely inspired Baum with the creation of some of the many female characters in his books. I won’t give away all her research here, but just leave you with one bit of literary sleuthing: who was Dorothy Gale? Di Scenna believes it is the immortalization of his little niece who died as an infant. The baby’s name was Dorothy—Dorothy Gage. It isn’t too far a stretch to imagine that he re-christened her Dorothy From Left To Right—Matilda Jocelyn Gage, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Susan B. Pain, Pain, Go Away! Lasers Usher in a Brand New Day Inflammation is the word-of-the-year in health - and in fact, it’s not a new discovery. If a bee stings you, and the spot gets red, swollen, and itchy: inflammation. You go out romping in the snow without adequate foot protection, and you end up with red, swollen toes? Inflammation. You wake up one morning with painful, tender, stiff elbows, wrists and ankles? Yep, inflammation. While it may not be pleasant, inflammation is usually a sign that your body is trying to protect itself: send more blood, fluid, and immune cells to the injured or “offended” area of the body. Where it goes wrong, however, it if the body can’t react as it’s supposed to, or it overreacts. In the first case, the initial insult to the body may not heal properly; in the second, the process of racing to protect itself may result in more damage that the initial injury. For years, medical science has tried to find way to assist your body in this selfhealing process, while at the same time minimizing the discomfort and - usually temporary - disability that goes along with it. Whether because of our diets, or the many chemicals we’re exposed to, we’re living longer - or likely some combination of these things, inflammatory response and associated auto-immune problems (your body treats itself as the enemy and starts

Some of the methods of treating inflammation are quite old and relatively innocuous, like aspirin for mild pain and inflammation; more recently anti-inflammatory agents like ibuprofen have been a real boon to people suffering from moderate levels of pain from sprains, or osteoarthritis. But, as with any cure, there are usually side-effects - in the case of many of these agents, and their more potent and therefore more dangerous cousins, opioids, kidney damage, and the need for ever-increasing doses to Therapeutic laser treatments are net the same reduction in pain and a new tool in the war against pain swelling have led researchers toward and inflammation. non-chemical methods of helping patients deal with these problems and remain active and relatively pain-free. Recently, I was had a chat with Dr. Vincent Sportelli at Sportelli Chiropractic on James Street in Syracuse. He was positively gleeful with enthusiasm about a new tool in the war against pain and inflammation: therapeutic laser treatments. Laser? Isn’t that like, Luke Skywalker and lightsabers that can slice and dice you in no time flat? Yes, and no. Laser (which is actually an acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) is a device that - well, it emits light, but amplified, so that it actually uses light to cut, weld, scan, and read information. What’s special about lasers is that the light is highly concentrated - focused - in a tightly coherent spot, hence its ability to

The Munjed’s Combo truly has a little bit of everything Munjed’s had to offer as far as Middle Eastern cuisine is concerned.

to make any excuses not to try things. We began our meal with an appetizer platter that included Feta Cheese and Olives, Babaganouj, Tzatziki, Falafel, and pita. The babaganouj (Puree of charbroiled eggplant, tahini, lemon and garlic) was creamy and smoky and fantastic (especially topped with the feta and olives) and the falafel (mildly spiced, fried chickpea patties served with tahini sauce) was crunchy and perfectly fried (not all greasy) and perfection when dipped in the Tzatziki (yogurt, cucumber and garlic dip). Kyle also “hates” chickpeas so after 3 falafels I thought it was only fair to tell him that perhaps he had misjudged chickpeas in the past. For our dinner Kyle had the Munjed’s Combo—A bed of hommus (puree of chickpeas, tahini, lemon, and garlic) topped with sirloin chawirma alongside falafel patties, grapeleaves, tabouli salad (mixture of parsley, bulgur wheat, tomato, scallions, mint, olive oil and lemon) and grilled chunks of shish kabobs. This combo was truly a little bit of everything Munjed’s had to offer as far as Middle Eastern cuisine is concerned; they also offer a variation made with chicken. Everything was cooked and spiced to perfection and Kyle cleaned the plate (even the hommus, with those pesky chickpeas again). I decided on the Greek Fest Combo, a selection of the best of Munjed’s Greek cuisine including a wedge of spanakopita (Filo pastry dough, filled with spinach, feta cheese, and baked until golden brown, served with tzatziki sauce), dolmas (grape leaves), slices of savory gyro meat (lean blend of lamb and beef carved off the rotisserie), served with Greek salad and tzatziki sauce. Every bite was absolutely superb. We didn’t actually save room for dessert but couldn’t pass it up so we split a slice of Baklava Cheesecake, vanilla based cheesecake topped with walnuts, sugar, and cinnamon that is then drizzled with a sugar and rosewater syrup and a classic Baklava, with Filo layered with walnuts and drizzled with a sugar and rose water syrup. Both were phenomenal and worth the trip on their own. Munjed’s is the perfect spot for any occasion. They also offer off site catering and on site banquets! They have plenty of room for your special occasion and they are the perfect, unique venue for your upcoming event, shower, birthday party, retirement party, rehearsal dinner, or any event! Yeah, Yeah, Yeah! 74 CNY Musicians Unite to Play Tribute to the Most Important & Significant Album in Rock & Pop Music on its 50th Anniversary. 50 Years Ago Today … Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band would have been wrapping up production unleashing the highly anticipated sonic monster that changed music forever. After an unheard of [at the time] 5 months of production at Abbey Road Studios, The Beatle’s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, was released on June 1, 1967—the summer of love in full-bloom. An immediate and immense success—topping UK and US charts—Time magazine declared it “a historic departure in the progress of music,” while the rest of the media also praised its elevation of rock to the level of fine art. In fact, it won four Grammy Awards in 1968 including Album of the Year, becoming the first rock record to fetch this honor. In February 1967, about half-way through the recording of the album, after recording the “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” song, McCartney suggested that the Beatles should release an entire album that would represent a performance by the fictional Sgt. Pepper band. This alter ego idea would enable themselves the creative freedom to experiment. And yup. We’ve all heard about the experimenting ways of the Beatles. By this time the Beatles had also stopped touring. Therefore, they would no longer have to play their songs live. And with this came the opportunity to adopt an experi-

It is also important to note that in 1966, Brian Wilson’s [Beach Boys mastermind] growing interest in the possibilites of the recording studio and his admiration for both record producer Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound and the Beatles’ album Rubber Soul resulted in the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds LP, which demonstrated his production expertise and his mastery of composition and arrangement. Tales from the Vine by CASSANDRA HARRINGTON

Nearly-Spring Updates from the Trail We’re all recovering from a knockout Mardi Gras Celebration here on the Trail. The Cayuga Lake Wine Trail brought Bourbon Street to Upstate New York, and we celebrated in true Trail Event style. Beads were flying, several people were decked out in their finest party attire and the Louisiana-style foods were delicious. Now with Mardi Gras behind us, our mouths are watering as we count down the days to Bacon on the Lakein. You read it right … I said BACON! It’ll be the third time we’ve hosted this very popular event. The wineries pair tantalizing bacon infused dishes with CLWT wines for your pleasure. To get you dreaming, some of the recipes already submitted are Bacon & Bourbon Brownies, Applewood Smoked Bacon Fondue with Manchego Cheese & Dates, Bacon & Cheese Meatballs, and straight up Bacon with a Balsamic-Brown Sugar Glaze. In addition, make sure to visit each of the 16 wineries to be eligible to win a BBQ themed gift basket containing BBQ sauces, utensils, and so much more! Just tear off a stub from your ticket at each winery and deposit into a Cayuga Lake Wine Trail Piggy Bank. The more wineries you visit the more chances you have to win! One lucky person will win a BBQ Smoker! Bacon on the Lakein is set for Saturday and Sunday March 18-19 from 10am to 5pm. Tickets are limited and the event did sell out weeks in advance during its first two years. Who can complain, $35 gets you wine, bacon, bacon and more wine! Take my word for it; your taste buds will be thanking us after. Not long after, the Trail hosts the famous (and 25th Annual) Wine & Herb Festival. You green thumbs can get a head start on your herb gardens. Every winey will have a different herb or veggie that they use to prepare their food sample. As you go, collect the potted herbs and veggies featured in all 16 food samples and take home the matching recipe collection. Yeah, Yeah, Yeah! continued from pg 18 Time,” it’s been there or near thereever since when such polls arise. And fittingly, there is nothing new about payingtribute to such a profound work. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band has been paid it’s fair tribute, though special live performances. All over the world. Syracuse is no exception with it’s annual BeatleCUSE event, spearheaded by the 6th Beatle we know (from Liverpool of course) as Paul Davie. BeatleCUSE has become quite a production honoring Beatle music and music related to the Beatle influence. The shows feature some of the folks associated with Beatles music and culture such as Denny Laine from Paul McCartney’s Wings; Joey Molland from Badfinger (Beatles via Apple records put Badfinger on the map); Earl Slick (who played guitar for post-Beatle John Lennon): Hilton Valentine from the Animals (who, at the time were in the same top 10 circles with the Beatles, sharing billing with them for a great number of shows … they were “right there;” Mark Hudson, from the Hudson Brothers, who was basically around for John Lennon’s Lost weekend days hanging out with Harry Nilsson, Alice Cooper, Mickey Dolenz, and Elton John. Mark has great Beatle stories. Oh yeah, he also produced records for Ringo for about 10 years. And these guys openly LOVE the experience of playing with Syracuse’s finest at the BeatleCUSE event. Denny Laine, in a phone conversation, says very Englishly, “It’s quite refreshing to see a high-quality production like BeatleCUSE. I mean really, man. Paul Davie really sticks-up for the details being right. And that’s not easy. All of the musicians were fantastic. You know, it can be unnerving to walk into a gig where you haven’t met the band, yet, but these guys made my job easy. Just killer. It was right. I had a great time. I appreciated the historical aspect of the production, as well. Very good.” When I asked him if he’d do it again, he replied, “Absolutely! I’d love to play with you guys, again.” Hilton Valentine relates his experience, “First and foremost, the entire event was so well organized and executed. And the quality of the musicians was excellent. They all care about creating the authentic sound of the original recordings. The cherry on the cake was obtaining the bagpipe band for Denny Laine’s “Mull of Kintyre”. I honestly have not experienced a promoter like Paul Davie that cared as deeply about the quality of a show they were presenting. I would do it again in a heart beat.”

Salt City Chill preforming at BeatleCUSE. What a riot it is for any of the participating musicans to know that some of the musicians we all look up to with great respect have a good time playing this music with us. One of the most exciting and unique aspects of the show is that BeatleCUSE encourages big namers rocking with the local talent. They do. And it works. Shucks, you can meet these people too as part of the fun is the meet and greet components of the experience. Syracuse drummer, Susan Royal enthusiastically states, “The BeatleCUSE show is a high energy, family friendly night of entertainment celebrating the musical legacy of the Beatles. There’s something magical and spectacular about participating in such a high quality production. I’m honored to be among Syracuse’s finest musicians to share the stage with legendary artists that share a musical connection to the Beatles. It’s going to be a rocking night of feel good music that celebrates the colorful and creative catalog of the Fab Four.” “When Paul asked me to participate in BeatleCUSE, I said, ‘Hell, yes,’ exclaims John Freund, (who makes the the drive from Jersey city annually for the event) “There is so much camaraderie between all the BeatleCUSE musicians and the crew that it’s uplifting. Really. We played some of our favorite music with the some of the people who made that music in the first place.” “I remember walking away from my first BeatleCUSE experience and thinking WOW! I hope I get to do that again! The musicians take it very seriously and work very hard to provide a memorable experience for the audience. Moving and memorable!” shares Edgar Pagan while Syracuse music vereran Bob Halligan declares, ”It is a real party that the audience completes for us!” “To witness the Syracuse musical legends, that I grew up admiring, reproduce the recorded catalog of the musicians they admire is priceless.” explains drummer Kevin Dean, who is an annual component. And so is Rhys Brigida from Salt City Chill. “It’s still one of the most thrilling shows I’ve participated in throughout my 40 years of performing in CNY. Syracuse is richer culturally, as a result.” This year’s installment of BeatleCUSE will prove to be yet another smash 10 Minutes From The Casino outing with 74 musicians—yes, 74, more than any of the prior BeatleCUSE events—on hand to render the evening’s music program. Among these people are SAMMY Hall of Famers, past winners and Deck Dining Overlooking nominees. There are old pros and new Beautiful Oneida Lake blood.
Pete Szymanski, drummer for the Barndogs (who have been featured Clams • Seafood Steaks • Chops numerous times) remembers playing Live Serving Lunch & Dinner and Let Die with Denny Laine, offering Specials the following elaboration, “Beatlecuse is Hospitality Since 1954! care enough to give the time and attention-to-detail that such a show deserves. Nothing is faked. The performances are genuine. An added bonus is the inclusion of performers who have been involved with the Beatles in one way or another. Is it worth it? It’s Beatles music—of course it’s worth it!” Anna Marie Lopez-White concurs. “It’s an amazing collaboration of some extremely talented musicians. The show is headed by Mr. Paul Davie who I call the George Lucas of BeatleCUSE. It’s a show that should be penciled in every year. Even if you’re not a fan of The Beatles—you will be by the end of the night!” And of course there are the headTim Stone from Magical Mystery liners. This year, Joey Molland from Tour playing his bass. Badfinger will at the show contributing music and compelling relevant anecdotes. At the time of this writing a potential 2nd headliner—I can’t say or they’ll have to kill me—is in the works. In my opinion the historical and anecdotal aspect of the show is part of what sets the bar of this tribute so much higher than the usual tribute. And when I use the word “tribute” I do not us the term lightly. BeatleCUSErs go to great deatil in honoring this music whether they are replicating it authentically to the popular versions we all know, or whether they’re rendering their own readings of the material, which is also compelling and fun. The evening will feature two halves. The first half will feature different groups and collected musicans playing selections from the vast Beatles catalog. The second half will feature a note-for-note replication of the Sgt. Pepper album.

Dave Frisina, the head honcho at 105.9FM The REBEL will be on hand to emcee the show as he does every year. “The reason to go is because the Beatles music is timeless. It changed popular music and continues to influence and inspire musicians. And the artists that will be performing at the BeatleCUSE prove it. You’ll know the music and you’ll admire the way it’s done.” explains Dave. The fans concur. “A jaw-dropping first experience. The show itself is more like being taken on a journey of sentimentality and nostalgia. All the while you are with your friends—all experiencing the same. I like the way it brings people together. And for those of us not able to see and hear the performances by the original artists, we get to feel what it must have been like.” says annual attendee and local music lover, Steve Sauro. “It’s fantstic!,” says longtime CNY music fan, Liz Brown “I love seeing all the musicians, some of whom I’ve been following for a long time. The music is great and so are the stories. The show itself is a spectacle. I go every year!” And then there is benevolence. A good protion of the proceeds generated at BeatleCUSE Productions (a 501c3 not-for-profit) will benefit Carol Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund, Clear Path For Veterans and scholarships to high school students pursuing college education in music education, performance or recording technology fields. 74 of Syracuse’s finest hardest working musicians all in one tonight. Its a good thing for a city to come together like this. You can be part the extravaganza yourself on April 8, 7pm at the Palace Theater. For more information, visit www.BeatleCuse.com

What Is This Weather? Thanks to climate change and the changing seasons, you may not be sure what to do about your ensemble this month. I get it. We’re in Central New York; it snows until Mother’s Day every single year. But there is the odd 60-degree day when we all strip off our layers and ditch work to eat lunch and read a book in the park. And then the next day we’re buried in the snow again. It’s confusing and kind of annoying, especially when you’ve finally dragged your spring dresses out only to have to wear your parka again. To beat the heat, or lack thereof, you’ve got to be prepared for just about anything. We experience all four seasons in one day after all. So this is what I’ll be wearing in March.

A Hat, Always

Sometimes I wear a hat because my ears are freezing, sometimes it’s because my hair is dirty, and sometimes it’s because I have no idea how to dress based on what weather app is Open Tuesday – saTurday my telling me. Needless to say, I always have a plain black beanie with me just in case. It Not Your Average Antique Store! goes with pretty much anything so if I feel cold or just want to look laid back, I’m covered.

A plain black beanie goes with pretty much anything so if I feel cold or just want to look laid back, your covered.

My Waterproof Booties

You never know when you’ll step outside to rain or slush, so it’s better safe than sorry in my opinion. I have some cute Chelsea-style rubber boots that don’t look like straight-up rain boots but still serve the same function. Now I spend less time wondering if my beloved leather boots will get ruined.

A Turtleneck Under Everything

Ok, maybe not everything. But I’ve been missing my spring clothes more and more lately so my solution is obviously to layer. If a turtleneck looks good under a tank dress, I’m wearing it. It makes me think that I’m transitioning into spring but I still feel warm and cozy.

A Giant Warm Scarf

Most of the time I wear a scarf as a blanket around the office because it’s so cold in there. But for days when I get out of work and realize it’s suddenly turned into a snowstorm, now I have a shield for my face. Wrap it around a few times and you’re good to go. Plus my favorite, an army green and cream scarf, mixes my all-black outfits up by adding a little color.

Tsha’hoñ’noñyeñ’dakhwa’ Onondaga Nation Arena Walking up to the arena to meet Sherwin Hill and Bret Bucktooth, I was taken by the flags that danced in the breeze. The sun enhanced the colorful designs of the flags and the landscape behind. Once inside, I was greeted by very cheerful people to directed me to the “Elder’s Room.” This room overlooked the giant ice arena where people of all ages were skating. There was even a toddler who was learning with a metal frame to help her stay upright. However, in less than a month, the ice will be taken out to put in turf for the Lacrosse season. “We have a variety of leagues here. They range from toddlers to adults,” said Sherwin. He then introduced me to Bret Bucktooth, professional lacrosse player. I asked Bret when he began playing lacrosse, and he said, “I think I was born with it in my hand.” He laughed and added, “My dad put one in my hand when I was very young—I don’t remember not having a lacrosse stick in my hand. And when my son was born, I put a lacrosse stick in his crib!” Now he plays for the New England Black Wolves, and says he loves playing with younger guys. “Lacrosse isn’t about size, speed or power. It’s about athleticism and intellect— that’s how you develop your stick skills.” Sherwin added, “And you need to be able to think quickly on your feet.” What’s more, Bret has vast experience to share. He started playing on the nation with 10 or 12 kids, and his dad, Freeman Bucktooth, was his 1st coach. “My dad is the first one who taught me how to be a complete player particularly when you don’t really have enough kids for a team. You have to learn every position and fill in the gaps. He also taught me to never stop learning— ‘be a sponge’ he would say.” This led to Bret’s success at Lafayette High School, and Syracuse University where he studied and played from 2003 to 2006. From there, he went pro and played for a few teams, but loves playing for the Black Wolves, where he plays now. “I’ve had the advantage of having some of the best coaches too. First my dad, “Lacrosse isn’t about size, speed or power. It’s then Coach Desko at SU, about athleticism and intellect—that’s how and now Jim Velman. Each you develop your stick skills.” Sherwin added, has something unique to “And you need to be able to think quickly on offer, and I was surprised your feet.” by the style Coach Desko had when I first went to

It goes back to his initial lesion of being a “complete player.” Now it’s time for Bret to follow in his father’s footsteps. He’s paying it forward by coaching now. Are You Sticking With It? Now that March is here, I think it’s a good time to check in with you guys to see how those New Year’s Resolutions are going! Are you crushing your goals or have you thought about throwing in the towel? Has adopting a heathy lifestyle been easier than you anticipated or are you desperately looking for something or someone to keep you motivated? I’m sure you couldn’t help but notice all of the new faces at the gym in the beginning of the New Year. January is always the busiest time of the year for fitness centers. In fact, many gyms see memberships double by the end of the month. Unfortunately, attendance is usually back to normal by mid-February. Maybe this is because we set unobtainable goals. Perhaps it’s because we have unrealistic expectations. Regardless, most of us want results today and if we don’t see change fast enough we lose motivation and the will to work out. Even if you have fallen off the wagon there is still hope! You can still make the commitment to reach your fitness goals this year. Whether your goal is to do a few sets of push-ups, run a half-marathon, or simply take the stairs more often there’s still time to get there! Here are a few tips to get you on your way to having your fittest year yet.

Write It Down

Write down your goals! This will help you figure out the exact steps you need

Are you crushing your goals this year or have you thought about throwing in the towel? Has adopting a heathy lifestyle been easier than you anticipated or are you desperately looking for something or someone to keep you motivated? to take to reach them. “I want to lose weight” is a pretty common fitness goal, but how exactly will you get there? Be more specific by saying “I will lose 10 pounds over the next six weeks by cutting out fast foods and going to the gym three times a week.”

Break Up the Goal

Making the decision to run a 10 K in three months can be pretty intimidating, but running a few miles a week is obtainable. A goal that’s either far in the future or out of your comfort zone can be tough to start, so break the goal down into achievable steps.

You Deserve It

When you hit hard-earned benchmarks such as one perfect set of burpees, ten pull-ups, or forty five minutes of cardio reward yourself! Choose a reward that won’t undo all of your hard work such as some new fitness gear, a day at the spa, a massage, or a weekend getaway. Rewarding yourself for all of your hard work can help you reach those milestones faster than you anticipated.

Do It For You

This is so important! The clients that I work with who have the most success at losing weight and keeping it off are the ones that do it for the right reasons. When you do it for someone else it’s less likely to last long term. When you hit the gym because you truly want to and not because you have to, it makes all the difference in the world.

Ask for Help

The personal trainers at the gym aren’t just there to look good, they’re there to help! They can answer any questions you may have, show you how to properly use a piece of equipment, and suggest some new things for you to try.

Keep a Schedule

Time management is important for accomplishing any goal, and fitness is no exception. An early morning workout is a great way to start off the day, but if waking up early to hit the gym is your idea of cruel and unusual torture, then it’s probably not a sustainable system. So make your fitness routine work for you! Pick a time of day that is practical, schedule it (like you would an appointment), show up, and do the work.

Don’t Be Boring

It’s time to get off the recumbent bicycle and venture out into the gym. Doing the same old monotonous exercise routine, (yes, even for experienced gym patrons) can become mind-numbing. You need variety! Try a group fitness class continued on pg 29

The more variety you have in your workout, the more apt you are to stick with it.

SPRING IS HERE! GET IN SHAPE FOR SUMMER

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is

Stay on track by putting your money where your mouth is. A great way to do that is to pay in advance for a personal trainer who will demand you show up each week. Knowing someone’s waiting for you will not only hold you accountable, but it will also prevent you from skipping out on workouts.

Use an App to Stay Motivated

MyFitnessPal is one of my favorites. It’s a great place to track your progress, set new goals, and stay connected with a community of people who have similar goals. It’s definitely easier to stay on the right path when you have structure and a supportive community cheering you on.

um

If your goal is to simply burn more calories every day, there are plenty of activities you can do outside of the box to achieve that. Get outside and shovel, take the stairs, or volunteer to clean the house. Pick up a pedometer to keep track of how many steps you take each day. Every minute you’re not sitting around is a step in the right direction.

Don’t Be Afraid to Scale Back

Yes, some people love intense workouts, but for others, waking up in pain isn’t their idea of a good time. You certainly don’t want to dread going back to the gym. Nothing will derail a fitness resolution faster than someone who hates exercise. A challenging workout should push you a bit outside of your comfort zone without you needing Ibuprofen, a massage therapist and Bengay the next day!

In Conclusion:

Once the excitement of a new year and a new resolution have worn off it can be easy to throw in the towel. There’s not a single person on this planet who hasn’t stumbled in their path to success. You just have to make sure you stick with it! Remember you haven’t truly failed until you’ve given up. View fitness as an investment not an expense. Making your health a priority is one of the best decisions you will ever make! Good luck to you. I have been a personal trainer for over seventeen years and I absolutely love what I do. I honestly feel that I have one of the best jobs out there! The most rewarding part of my profession is helping one of my clients succeed at reaching their personal fitness goals. Making a difference in someone’s life makes it all worthwhile. I am currently certified by the National Sports Conditioning Association, Apex Fitness Group, and the International Sports Science Association.

Onondaga Nation Arena continued from pg 25 love seeing the little ones with their big helmets. They look like bobble heads.” You can see the joy for the game and the kids when he said that by the big smile on his face. The other advantage to coaching is, “It reteaches you the fundamentals. When you play for so long, you forget those sometimes. Coaching reminds you where it began and it makes you a better coach and player.” However, the first thing Bret teaches is fun! Bret and Sherwin then explained the concept behind lacrosse. “It’s a healing game, and it’s meant to help you focus on positive things. You heal when you’re playing,” said Bret. It’s a good thing it’s a healing game, because the hardest part of lacrosse is overcoming injury. “First, it’s difficult to be away from your family because you have to travel a lot. The other hardship is not being able to play after you’ve been injured.” Said Bret, but then “you know you’ll get back to playing so you do what you have to do to get well.” The healing power of lacrosse provides medicine to the soul—you make new friends with other players, and “your family is always there to cheer you on,” said Sherwin. In the Elder’s Room, I saw the Nation’s greatest lacrosse players, but I was embarrassed that I only knew Chief Oran Lyons. However, I plan to learn a lot more about the game this summer. “What a lot of people don’t realize is that we’re open to our neighboring communities. Anyone can come and watch the games. As a matter of fact, we hope more people will come to the games.” stated SherLacrosse awards on dispay at the win, the director of the arena. Many Onondaga Nation Arena. The arena was built in 2001 and

However, they would love to show everyone what the facility has to offer. Inside, there a snack bar and tables to congregate between games. Kids lacrosse is free! And junior and senior games are only a $5.00 admission fee! “You’ll see players from age 3 or 4 up to 70,” explained Sherwin. While they run some camps, most of the summer is booked with games where they compete with other Nations. There are some players from Jordan-Elbridge and Lafayette, and all kids are welcome. What I loved most about doing this story was how warm and welcoming everyone was to me from the ladies standing outside and in the office, and then Sherwin and Bret. I want to send a huge “THANK YOU” to everyone at Tsha’Hoñ’noñyeñ’dakhwa’ and remember that everyone is welcome to visit the arena on the Onondaga Nation!

My Mind To Yours

by DEBRA MERRYWEATHER

Don’t Keep It to Yourself A recent television advertisement for a popular national dating site depicts a couple seated at a table for two in a restaurant on what seems to be a first date. The guy rattles off a long list of labels to describe himself, many of which refer to ideologies and physical conditions, one of which caught my attention: gluten free. The woman’s facial expression in the advertisement shows that she is greatly pained and more greatly bored and could have avoided meeting this gastronomically challenged creature if she’d used the advertiser’s service. I try to only eat gluten-free food. I do not describe myself as gluten-free because I am not, myself, food. I have celiac disease, a physical condition in which the digestive tract does not process gluten. I was diagnosed when I was fifty-three years old. Decades before that when I, at the age of four walked the four long blocks to my first kindergarten classes, celiac disease was pretty much unknown. Undiagnosed and untreated celiac disease lends itself to poor motor skills and overall fidgetiness. I received not so great grades in “deportment” and “handwriting.” I have read in several places that the first inklings that a possible digestive epidemic existed was when northern Europeans reported feeling ill after bread became more available following WWII. When a person has celiac disease, gliadin, a chemical component of the protein gluten which is found in wheat, barley, rye and sometimes oats, is released into the upper intestine. It is there that the trouble starts. Gliadin attacks and flattens the

Celiac disease, a physical condition in which the digestive tract does not process gluten. Umotor skills and overall fidgetiness. intestinal villi, which are finger like intestinal protuberances whose surfaces absorb nutrients such as calcium, iron and B12. Once celiac disease process begins, people with celiac disease experience digestive pain and everything that goes with it. Digestive pain coupled with vitamin malabsorption leads to poor focus and foggy thinking. When I was a child it was considered impolite to mention certain sorts of pain and considered very impolite to try to compare digestive process experiences with anyone. Very often, sufferers of celiac disease are not diagnosed until they reach their fifties, at which point, their upper intestines no longer rebound and the pain can no longer be ignored. Peter H.R. Green M.D.’s “Celiac Disease a Hidden Epidemic,” links celiac disease to certain malignancies including melanoma, neuropathy, migraine, epilepsy, diabetes, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and alcoholism. Research suggests that trauma, and undiagnosed and untreated illness is trauma, can itself lead to depression, so-called mental illness and substance abuse. In fact, celiac disease involves biochemical internal trauma not visible to the onlooker. Vitamin B deficiencies can cause cracks in the corners of the mouth which are visible, but which alone might not trigger testing for celiac disease. My thinking has gotten much clearer since I stopped consuming gluten. My needed caffeine consumption, yes, I am probably an addict, has dropped by half. I still like my coffee. And, despite suffering much internal damage from other long ago causes, and despite having lived with a considerable brain injury of which I was not aware until I was in my late fifties, I have continued to feel better because I consume a gluten free diet. Consciousness starts with the senses. Psychologist Charles Fernyhough’s “The Voices Within” suggests that adults who hear voices might not be hallucinating the disconnected phantoms of mental illness, but might be experiencing forgotten conversations, their own subconscious thoughts, or still-to-be-named emotions from the past. Serotonin plays a large part regulating mood, appetite and sleep, and, from day one, our central nervous systems process memories of our days’ events, growing and pruning neural connections as we sleep. (Some neuroscientists believe autism results from inefficient neural pruning.) Celiac disease is not common. Gluten sensitivity might be. Our guts rule us. Most serotonin resides in our digestive tracts and our first communications with ourselves and the world stem literally from our gut feelings. An infant’s first “words” are screams and how those screams are met lead to expectations, hopeful or diminished. A therapist once gave me an audiotape on spirituality which suggested that the first “god” anyone meets is the person looking down at them as they lay helpless in their cribs. Perception flows from there. Language starts there. We enter our wider worlds speaking words and using body language that mimic our early experience and imagine how emotionally fraught life is when families cannot stop a child’s pain. Specific knowledge of how internal neurochemicals and external substances affect how we think and feel might create more shared societal value for individual well-being and homeostasis. We benefit from good information. There is no shame in sharing some.

Word on the Street by BILL MCCLELLAN

The Complete Patriotic Failure of the House & Senate Thanks to decades of cruel and selfish behavior unbefitting any sense of ability to lead, by the House and the Senate, America underwent a great social decline. They created through Quid-Pro-Quo (money for favor) an economy in which most of the middle class lost their pursuit of the American dream. They set the standard two generations ago for the rest of the country. From Town, City, County and State, to Washington, D.C. it became acceptable to take money from rich people and do what they want. They sold the well-being of the average citizen and created an environment where much of America felt completely alone. Poisonous conduct permeated our leadership. Our leaders sold the quality of life for our people, our land, our water and our air. It is in this money sucking at any expense environment, that the grave personality weaknesses of Donald Trump were far less important than giving any outside hope a chance. Most, in desperation overlooked his flaws in hopes of reaping work from his business acumen. They also overlooked his belief in low wages. As prevails in declining society, many of the most able benefit in the declin-

In their own right the 535 (the U.S. Congress) have done far more damage to this country than Trump could ever do. ing system, overlooking the masses that do not. Especially in a country like America where we separate by status, race and ethnicity, the better off do not witness the suffering of over half the nation. A quarter of us are doing just fine and you will resent my intensity. Another quarter is getting by somewhat OK. To that I say, “Even Dictators do better than that”. Half is not enough. To be in keeping with our founding goals, work should be available to each commensurate with their abilities and the minimum income should be livable. And let there be no mistake in understanding the Trump Presidency is due specifically to unfair or no wages for too many. If you understand that specificity then you understand why nothing else mattered. For each of us, the bottom line is the tool to give us “food” and “shelter” and a reasonable life. America has been failing this and it finally caught up. I witnessed in my lifetime with daily awe and disbelief the leaders of this land decimate the intent of the finest document to guide mankind ever devised. In their own right the 535 (the U.S. Congress) have done far more damage to this country than Trump could ever do. They led us into the cultural dungeon of the third world. Tens of millions live with far less. Immigrants will work for minimum wage alongside most Americans, usually for lifetimes. What could be more unfair than corporate owners having billions each for their kids as their workers are forced to go on food stamps? The American dream has literally been removed from our lexicon as so few have real hope of achieving it. Except for the hideous racists and others missing the empathy gene, the large majority of Trump voters did not vote for him. They voted against everything the 535 should have protected us against. There has never been a failure in human history and likely will never be another that can match the outright selling of humankind’s hope by those charged with protecting the beacon of the land that guided the world. The 535 joined all that is evil. They took money and looked the other way. For money they allowed corporations to ravage the work, the very life-blood of communities. They did this on such scale the entire country degraded. The media lay useless. Their CEO’s, also Corporate and for sale. The 535 has allowed Corporations, for money, to imbed this integrity sucking practice into widespread policy. This has allowed the power hungry despicable corporate world to guide mankind. The 535 have knowingly allowed us to devolve into a system devoid of empathy for the people for money. Only individual narcissistic cowardice devoid of patriotism prevented opposition. Headlines were obsequiously oblivious to the evil mustard seed poison: Selling legislation and favor for money. The answer is so glaring, and simple, and “just”, and it is a disgrace that we have ignored it. As humans all we can hope for is the best that humans can be. To achieve this you must recognize the weaknesses that historically blemish leadership. That is lust for money and power. To remove these you must dis- incentivize such pursuers. You remove avenues that provide profits for offending the common good. Those with true love of country that govern for human justice,

and the people that will fight for the intent of our founding will replace them. “Public financing on every level of government is the answer”. Those that genuinely believe that Trump is a solution via leadership, have miss-read who he is. He is solution only in that he has shown how far we have devolved. As the realities of his administration come to light we will realize that America has all but disappeared. All because of the Mustard Seed Planted generations ago. A seed named “Quid Pro Quo”. The talk of ample reasonable paying jobs is just talk. Trumps efforts may well result in a large return of work. But for the teeming poor, they will be minimum wage. Only a few percent will get the better jobs that make the headlines. The circle of removing good jobs from America until Americans devolved into acceptance born of desperation, and then return them at third world wages will be complete. The majority of the Middle Class has already joined the poor. I am disgusted that the system could not produce anyone willing and able to change it. I am ashamed that we have resorted to a man that put Steve Bannon (a man that shames the horror of Auschwitz, the dreams of King and now our so hallowed halls in the White House. A man that makes fun of handicapped and belittles individuals on unprecedented levels, and lies at the drop of a hat is our president. I do not look for progress through successes. I look for America to learn her lesson from his monumental failures. An entire land of favor for favor had no other place to go. I am disappointed that enormous failure or revolution on some scale is all that is left to motivate us to fix our land. The very fact that he is in office miserably degrades and fails our pursuit. Not because it is a bad system. But because there is not ample definition of intent and no adhering ideas or principles. It is impossible to comply with Constitutional Intent and govern from a system of rewarding donors. I leave you with a little doomsday message to the Tech world and the entire Corporate world as they partner with unparalleled job sucking robotic automation and technological progress. NAFTA did remove an enormous number of Jobs from America. However, trade deals are useless without applying and understanding the near future. A new wave of advancements in high technology and robotic automation that are not regarding the people are on the very near horizon. It is here where the final threat and destroyer of work exists and may well be setting the course for revolution. Under the veneer of everyday life lies a seething massive population. This wave of job loss, in addition to the current environment will not be acceptable. If we do not heed the voices and the lessons of the Trump voter their numbers and “belief” will fester. If they come to perceive deeper irretractile futility in government, all hell could easily break lose. Our epitaph will begin something like this: The few, the authors and the participants in the heartless sucking of our founders hopes. They bought the American Bounty for themselves, which was hope for the poor and the well-being of the middle class. They left crumbs. One day they woke up and the oppressed were everywhere. No one was safe. The line had been crossed. Greed and Power lost. At what price, we asked, at what price. The streets ran crimson

RECIPE

Best Corned Beef & Cabbage Recipe by Lynnae McCoy

Ingredients: CORNED BEEF & VEGGIES Corned Beef Brisket 1 pint amber ale 10 small red potatoes ½ lb. baby carrots 1 head cabbage 1 onion

HORSERADISH SAUCE 1 cup sour cream ¼ cup hot cream horseradish 1 Tbsp. Dijon mustard 1 tsp white wine vinegar Salt and pepper to taste

Directions: CORNED BEEF & VEGGIES

Trim the fat from the corned beef brisket. Place the beef into the stock pot and pour the beer over it. Add enough water to cover the beef by a couple of inches. Bring to a boil. As the water comes to a boil, I like to skim off the foam, so the pot doesn’t boil over. That’s completely optional, though. Add the spice packet that came with the corned beef. Cover and turn down the heat. Simmer corned beef for about 50 minutes per pound. For a four pound brisket, that’s about 3.5 hours. “Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.” — John F. Kennedy

Prepare horseradish sauce (recipe below), so the flavors can mix for a few hours before dinner.

Forty minutes before the corned beef is done, add whole potatoes and carrots. Cover, return to a boil, and simmer about forty minutes until the veggies are tender. Remove corned beef, potatoes, and carrots to a casserole dish or serving platter. Cover with foil and keep warm in the oven. Cut cabbage and onion into wedges. Add cabbage and onion to the pot, which now only contains the cooking liquid from the corned beef. Simmer 15 minutes or until crisp tender. Add cabbage to the platter and serve the entire meal with horseradish sauce.

HORSERADISH SAUCE

Mix together sour cream, horseradish, Dijon mustard, white wine vinegar, salt, and pepper in a small dish. Refrigerate for several hours. Serve alongside corned beef.
