Sounds Of Syracuse

by CHUCK SCHIELE

A View From the Ridge Perspectives on the music scene according to Melinda Sorrentino If you’ve been to the Ridge in Chittenango for any of their music events, you’ve had a blast. From regularly scheduled shows on the weekends featuring the area’s finest, to tribute shows celebrating the greats, to thematic festivals the Ridge is brimming with music. This music hotspot has succeeded all because of the nice, cool lady running the place. In my personal estimation, I think I can safely speak for the rest of the city’s musicians who’ve played there, that she is among the most gracious venue hosts a musician could ever hope for. Musicians feel extremely welcomed here … respected and taken care of. I see musicians reciprocating by taking care of the boss. Duh, cool, right? Imagine that … the beneficial effects of mutual respect. Because of this, I also note that musicians indeed play better and the fans have more fun. At the festivals and tributes the camaraderie between musicians is ideal. Since the physical set-up of the venue encourages mingling between the musicians and the music lovers, the camaraderie there is also pretty darn ideal. It’s a great model. The venue itself is a treat. An A-frame-ish mountain chalet —akin to a mountain ski resort— is nestled on a ridge looking over the lush green valley which constitutes the location of hole 9 —yes, this is located at a golf course— one is instantly charmed upon arrival. Super cozy and charming inside as well. Out back they’ve built two stages, each of them

Nestled into the trees is an impressive A-frame-ish mountain chalet catering to different kinds of events. Both of them impressive. I dropped by to chat with Melinda Sorrentino about it. I want you to meet this positive lady doing positive things, hoping that all this good energy rubs off on to this city. Ladies and gentlemen, please meet Melinda Sorrentino. Chuck Schiele: HI Melinda. Thank you for taking some time to talk with us here at Sounds of Syracuse. You have a golf course. You turned it into one of the hottest music venues in town. How did that happen? What inspired you to make music such a part of your club culture? Melinda Sorrentino: Not an easy, straight-line answer, Chuck. I’ll start with the fact that I’ve never golfed in my life —and still haven’t— but bought the golf course (and surrounding land) as a separate for-profit entity back in 2011 after my sister and I founded Clear Path for Veterans,

next door. We felt it was important to ensure that the fledgling organization had a good neighbor, and wanted to provide a trusted place for Veterans and the public to interact. We also thought that the zen-like nature of the golf game would be of some interest to Veterans. So we opened the course and the need for food and beverage gave me an excuse to satisfy my innate need to feed people. That, along with my irrational desire to open a restaurant, and lots of help from good people along the way, got The Ridge on the map. Since then, Clear Path has grown in other mission-driven directions and The Ridge has taken on a mission of its own. We’ve become a sort of community dinner table where people feel connected so it made perfect sense to add live music to The Ridge experience. Even separately, food and music both have an incredible way of bringing people together and when you combine them, magic can happen. Physical spaces also affect people in significant and subjective ways and we’ve worked hard to make The Ridge feel like home to everyone that walks through our doors. CS: Do you, yourself, play music? MS: I play some piano – mostly alone in my living room with no one listening. And a lifetime of listening and an obsession with the stories music tells has logged a veritable encyclopedia of lyrics in my head. Last year, under much duress, I got up and sang a Carole King song. CS: What do you look for in those who perform? MS: Good question. Lots of intuition involved in that process and when you are inviting someone to share your space with people who are there for a good experience, there’s a responsibility there. The musician is sharing his or her art too and wants to be listened to and appreciated – even above the clamoring of plates, silverware and dinnertime chatter. So, I look for artists who are not only talented and authentic but also skilled at reading a crowd and add to the atmosphere of the place. In an industry riddled with big egos and self-importance, you have to be able to spot that right away. -Egos and alliances should be checked at the door. CS: Briefly explain your working model/philosophy. MS: I know it sounds cliché but if I had to sum it up, it’s the Golden Rule: treat others the way you want to be treated. That includes everyone you encounter from the dish person that works his ass off for you to the customer buying a great bottle of wine. Choose to see the good in people and understand that even though you can be disappointed sometimes by a lack of gratitude or just plain incompetence, that shouldn’t change how you choose to approach people. CS: Amen to that. Just because someone insists on demonstrating a No ons lesser version of their self doesn’t mean I have to … ati v MS: Exactly. And never give up what you love to do for what you r e Res ded on have to do – make space in your life for both and surround yourself with people who are made of the same stuff. Skills can be taught Nee r’s Day and learned but passion, integrity and genuine care for others need the a F to come naturally in the people you chose to work with – it has to be organic. Be different and when people start copying you, head in another direction. And have a great sense of humor —especially in this business— that’s a must. CS: You feature a regular series of tribute shows. Please share. MS: This super successful series actually started when Jamie Notarthomas offered to bring his annual Dylan tribute show to The Ridge in May 2016. From there, we laid out a whole series together —we’ve done 27 of them so far— and Jamie’s been instrumental in not only Haddock Served Daily the creative part of things but also bringing some great players into 1. GRADE: A

Far surpassing any initial expectations, the original DEADPOOL was a shocking, vulgar, insanely original masterpiece that obliterated all clearly defined cinematic conventions. The film, featuring the Katana blade wielding Mercenary with a Mouth, ingeniously portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, instantly became a classic of the superhero genre. Relentlessly fun and funny, it was filled with so many popculture references and one-liners that it was impossible to soak it all in with one viewing. Hilarious and stylish from start to finish, it possessed the rare ability to win over those who couldn’t care less about superheroes, and also proved that an R-rated

comic-book flick could be immensely popular and profitable. As with any smash hit, it was obvious that there would be an immense amount of interest in a potential sequel. DEADPOOL 2 received the greenlight almost immediately, although details surrounding the production were kept tight-lipped until its release. Three weeks after the debut of the $2 billion grossing AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, Reynolds’ donned the red and black suit once again, and brought Wade Wilson and his snarky alter-ego DeadSnarky, sarcastic, violent, and obscene, this installment pool back to life. is every bit as weird and wonderful as one would hope. DEADPOOL 2 is not only a spectacular sequel, but is easily one of the most entertaining films I’ve seen this year. As with any follow up, there was concern that the production would be a letdown after the unexpected

brilliance of the first. Snarky, sarcastic, violent, and obscene, this installment is every bit as weird and wonderful as one would hope. After the death of a loved one rocks him to his core, and then a grandiose suicide attempt goes awry, Wade Wilson (Reynolds) looks to find meaning in his life. In hopes of doing so, he becomes an X-Men (in training) and crosses paths with Russell Collins (Julian Dennison). The confused and conflicted teen is incapable of controlling his fiery emotions, and may very well be a danger to anyone who enters his stratosphere. Wilson takes it upon himself to take the troubled youth under his wing, no matter what the cost. A View from the Ridge continued from pg 3 who love the challenge of studying the work of music’s greats. While I have a personal desire to showcase original music at The Ridge, and Jamie has a quite a resume as an original artist (we’ll be unveiling an original series this summer), we still understand that our audience wants to hear songs that are familiar. -Music can so easily bring you to a place or time in your life that you want to remember. This tribute series gives them that and we’ve covered some great artists — from Van Morrison, to Stevie Wonder, to Carole King to Pink Floyd— and we’ve got some great ones planned for this summer as well. These shows are collaboration on steroids and involve as many as 30-40 musicians – and we’ve had some really, really special moments. While there’s been a lot learned musically, we’ve also learned a ton about each other both practically and creatively – working, organizing, interpreting the music. Some people are amazed by the fact that we pull these shows off. -Most think that working with so many creative people at once must be like herding cats. It’s actually quite the opposite and an absolute pleasure to work with so many talented, capable people. CS: You’ve had music happening inside the restaurant part of the clubhouse for quite a while. But, now you have things happening outside. MS: There is a lot going on outside, yes. With a pretty well established music culture inside, Tribute bands, original music and more will grace the stages this season! we ventured into doing some outdoor festivals in our early years —Bacon and Bourbon Festival and Ridgestock to name two— (in their 5th and 4th years respectively) and with very little infrastructure outside of our beautiful setting, pulled off some great stuff. Once you succeed at something you’ve challenged yourself to do, you want to do it again and again and a bond forms in the team of people who help you pull it off. There’s a great feeling that comes from having 1,000 or more people come to your place and have a memorable experience and to be appreciated for the attention to detail and hard work put into those events. So, I decided if we wanted to do more of that kind of thing, we needed to change the landscape a bit to fit our needs. And I found some wonderful people crazy enough to help me – Bob West, Dan Coley and Jamie (among others) all, without question, dove head first into building a stone amphitheater right in our back yard out of rocks found on the property. Jamie and I drew a plan on the back of a Chinese dinner menu and we were off. The thank yous I owe to them and the stories we have to tell would take up a whole article. Needless to say, we’ve created a totally unique, one-of-a-kind space that you have to see to understand. This winter, for the first time since we opened in 2012, I decided to take a break to focus on a new direction and take time to really think about how we could keep the same great juju at The Ridge but continue to adapt and evolve. Sometimes it’s just easier to see clearly when you’re not in the trenches and having fulfilled my bucket list desire to own a restaurant, was ready to move on to a new chapter focusing on events and the outdoor music that we have become so good at. I was prepared to do all the food and beverage myself with a smaller staff and while we were all ready for the change, there were plenty of moments of rethinking the possibility of keeping the restaurant side operating. In a conversation with a good friend who asked if there was anyone out there that I could rely on to run the food side of things and do it right, I explained that there’s only one other person I would trust. While I hadn’t spoken with him in almost a year, within an hour, I received a text from Chance Bear saying that he was thinking about making a change in his life and wanted to meet to talk. The prospect of having him here was so exciting that I was willing to change the plan. He is not only an incredibly gifted chef and legend in food here in CNY, but also a passionate team player and as authentic as they come. We met, realized the fit was perfect and we haven’t looked back. It takes a combination of integrity, creativity and humility to fit in here at The Ridge and Chance and his team —Dan Strathdee & Ross Levy among others— have it. And it goes without saying that their food is extraordinary! CS: Every musician who has worked at your venue will applaud your grace and appreciation. The common chit-chat among players around here —who have watched club after club go down year after year— is that you seem to be doing things right … and everyone has placed

A View from the Ridge continued from pg 6 their bets that you will endure. Please share your views on that and why. MS: That’s a great compliment, Chuck. And encouraging to hear since I’ve faced many challenges just like everyone else. I heard a TED talk about longevity recently and while it was talking about biological longevity in people, I think there’s a parallel there for business as well. Studies have shown that the single most important factor in living a long and healthy life is being connected to others and waking up every morning with a sense of purpose. If you run your business like you live your life and are motivated by things other than money, it all falls into place. Set that bar for everyone around you and combined with some hard work, you’ve created a culture and a business model that is meaningful and sustainable. CS: Awesome. Please share some of your favorite memories in music at the Ridge. MS: Some of my favorite moments happened outside of performances when no one was watching. -Some great musical memories were made in rehearsals before our tributes, sitting around a fire after Ridgestock, in the down-time after a great show. Performance-wise, there are so many special moments … it’s almost impossible to choose. Those lucky enough to have been here for one or more of our shows know what I’m talking about. There’s also magic that happens outside of the music – a real connection between everyone that’s really special. Not to mention the fact that one night at a rehearsal, almost like magic, my dying computer was fixed, guitar holders were hung, and the toilet flush valve replaced. Musicians are pretty smart, capable people! CS: Let’s hear a funny war story … like the time that crazy lady reached into a musicians gig bag and extracted a fresh Musicians and memories made during dinner and pair of skivvies … heh, heh, heh. every spare moment at the Ridge MS: One of my stories actually does involve a pair of skivvies, but they were my own, static-cling stuck to a bar towel that my bartender grabbed to dry a glass. Yes, in front of a customer, and yes, they were clean. No, seriously, some real war stories involve building our outdoor venue while simultaneously having shows in it. Exactly a year ago, we were pouring concrete for the stage two days before the Dylan tribute, and laid 5,000 square feet of sod until 2 in the morning the day before Ridgestock, and the list goes on. MAKE YOUR FATHER'S DAY RESERVATIONS! CS: What do you think of the music CNY has to offer? MS: This town has an incredibly deep bench of talent that seems to be constantly growing. We see new faces and new configurations of players all the time. And for the most part, musicians in our community value collaboration and are so passionate about the music that it trumps everything else – sometimes healing even long-standing rivalries or grudges. Facilitating that is a big part of what The Ridge is about. CS: Any tips or advice to offer musicians and bands from a talent buyer’s perspective MS: Be authentic – don’t be a phony. You can skip this question if you’d like. J CS: What’s in the near future for the music at the Ridge? MS: We’ve got lots of great things planned for this season – our tribute series kicks off with Bob Dylan on May 24 and continues monthly through October. The series includes tributes to Bob Marley, Peter Gabriel, George Harrison, Genesis, Bruce Springsteen and John (TRY OUR AWARD WINNING MEATBALLS!) Lennon. The Fish Cove 2130 West Genesee St., Syracuse, NY 13219 Monday - Thursday: 9am - 6:30pm Friday: 9am - 9pm Saturday: 11am - 6:30pm Let’s see if we can get through this story without getting hungry for a great fish dinner! Modern Americans have a definite love affair with seafood – and while there are many reasons for that, it’s nice to note that fish not only tastes delicious, it’s good for you. But until modern refrigeration, seafood wasn’t easy to obtain unless you lived near – well, the sea! How fortunate we are to be able to get fresh, tasty fish in so many varieties. And not just on Friday; fish is for any day! One of our favorite places to get fish when we just HAVE to have some is The Fish Cove in Westvale Plaza. One good reason for that is the Fish Cove is, literally, a grand-daddy of fish restaurants here in Syracuse. Current owner Tracy Tamburo/Nevil’s grandfather, Carl Falgitano, opened the original Fish Cove 70 years ago (this year marks that anniversary) with his brother-in-law. He eventually passed the business along to his daughter, Carlene Tamburo, and Carlene’s daughter, Tracy, says she started working in the business as a teenager. Cousin, Louis Falgiatano,

as he spells the family name, has worked at the Fish Cove for more than 55 years! Though both she and her husband, Mike Nevil, originally thought they would be pursuing other options, something about the business drew them back —perhaps, as Tracy tell us, “Our customers and staff— they’re the heart and soul of our business.” The business is clearly a labor of love, family, friends, and good food. Tracy pauses and names yet another employee who worked for the restaurant for 50 years, “… continued on pg 12

What you Need to know PREFACE: So many have mentioned that they hear too much hoopla and not enough about issues. I agree. Elections and Politics are about Issues. It is the stand on issues you really want to know about. What a candidate will fight for. Following this column you will see the word “ISSUES.” It is explained how Democrats feel on each. That is what is important. THE PRIMARY ELECTION WILL BE FROM NOON TO 9PM, TUESDAY JUNE 26, 2018. THIS IS A VITAL SEASON – DEMOCRATIC PARTICIPATION IS CRITICAL TO END THIS ERA OF TRUMP/KATKO IN THE 24TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT. JUANITA FOR CONGRESS Unity & Integrity If you disagree, as I do, strongly with Donald Trump and his cult like following this is your opportunity to step forward. John Katko has misled you. He is not a moderate. No rhetoric, it is simply true, he is a right-wing extremist clearly evidenced by his voting record. He has joined the chorus of paid and afraid leadership and has deserted his charge: The 24th Congressional District. He defied every need we have in our four-county area as he voted for Trumps Tax Bill. This bill is riddled with details that leave average Americans without hope. The entire bill is designed to diminish health care and dismantle “behind your back” programs for seniors, children, and the poor, to take from you and give to the 1%. It is baffling obscenity and glaringly depicts the power of moneyed lobbyists and their influence. Trump and Katko are Pied Pipers. Pied Pipers are people who induce others to follow or imitate them especially by means of deceit and false and extravagant promises. This column is a call for unity and respect for each candidate and a call to protect the principles of the Democratic Party that we are all fighting for. It is a call to the people to understand all that has happened in both campaigns is highly honorable. It is understandable that some feel discomfort by Juanita’s late entry. Juanita understands this and appreciates the dedication and the volunteers and the hard work so necessary in these efforts. With heartfelt understanding for those feelings we must see that this is about something much bigger. It is about America. It is about a great land that is off course. And certainly, it is about determining who the best leaders may be to reset direction and course. Juanita is battle tested, experienced and has high approval ratings and name recognition. She has built a diverse coalition bringing energy and enthusiasm to the campaign. Reputation, support and recognition are built over time. This a vulnerable seat and without this kind of background this seat is in very grave danger of being lost again. Throughout the 24th Congressional District Juanita has earned the vital positive name recognition so necessary to defeat John Katko. This was all confirmed in independent research by The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). The DCCC is on the people’s side. Their goal is to win. They developed an in-depth research process to determine who the top tier potential candidates (most likely to win) are in each Congressional District. In this research they included vulnerable Republican Candidates such as John Katko. They determined as best as can be done that Katko is vulnerable and the candidate most likely to take back this seat is Juanita Perez Williams. Juanita was one of 33 to be chosen in this elite “Red to Blue” program reserved for those with the highest potential across the land. There were no benefactors or political cronies influencing for Juanita. This was determined with honest unbiased research all too rare in politics. Research pursued for the sole purpose of determining the best way to take back the House. This is a call to those that worked hard on another campaign to respect all of these highly continued on pg 40

American Wild Ale: These beers are brewed with a random assortment of American strains of yeast and bacteria – they may be cultured or occur spontaneously, hence the term “wild.” These by KRISTIN MERRITT brews do not necessarily follow any specific guidelines. Because of this sort of unpredictability involved, the wild ale may taste slightly different with each batch. One to try: Minkey Boodle by Thin Man Brewery (Buffalo, NY), 7% ABV; this is a refreshing raspberry sour that is bursting with berries. It also has a lovely rich pink color. Perfect for summer patio living. Find this both on draft and in cans. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, there’s not many people who are in-between when it comes to Berliner Weisse: This sour hearkens sour beers. Sours are definitely in a category of their own, and seemingly over the past back to Germany, and yes, Berlin, just as few years are becoming all the more popular. cold on hot summer days. Tanker Truck Sour Series – Sauvignon Blanc Gose by Two Roads Brewing Company (Stratford, CT), 4.8% ABV; this is a very unique Gose because it’s fermented not only in a former dairy tanker truck, but also with Sauvignon Blanc grapes! This might just be a beer for you wine lovers out there and certainly worth a try! The brew is light, best served cold, with notes of honeydew melon, passion fruit, gooseberry, lime, and with that distinct dryness that Sauvignon Blanc wine imparts. Both Goses can be found at our local supermarkets. Lambic: these beers originate from the Brussels area of Belgium. The wort produced in the brewing process is cooled and exposed to the open air in winter and spring and then fermented in barrels and allowed to mature. Lambics are usually blends of different seasons batches —known as gueuze— and/or are fermented a second time with fruits (mostly raspberries, cherries, and strawberries). One to try: Crème de Framboise by Red Hawk Brewing (Syracuse, NY), 7.8% ABV; brewed at our own local Belgian-style brewery on Onondaga Hill, this raspberry Lambic is tart with a lovely subtle raspberry flavor. Refreshing! Fun fact: Red Hawk’s beer brewing components and ingredients are largely locally-sourced. Oud Bruin: Another type of sour originating from the Flemish region of Belgium and similar to the Flanders Red Ale, these are dark in coloring and are not aged in wooden barrels. Yeasts are cultured as well. One to try: Gypsy Tart by Brewery Terreux (Anaheim, CA), 8.4% ABV; this is extremely complex, with a sweeter body and a more tart finish. You may be able to distinguish notes of honey, grapes, berries, and chocolate. To note, sours should be stored between 45-55°F. If you come across a corked sour, (some specialty brews are!), you should treat them as you would a bottle of wine and store them lying on their sides. Recommended serving temps vary from 40 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit, but there truly is no “wrong” temperature to drink it as everyone has an individual preference. Suggested glassware is in a tulip glass as this allows the complexity of each sour to evolve and shape and allows the beer to “breathe.” & if you’re looking to pair your sour beer with a meal or snacks, some optimal choices are omelettes & quiches, spicy dishes, cured meats and bold cheeses, fatty cuts of beef and sausage, mollusks – clams, mussels, and oysters, and fried foods. Cheers!

A Guide to Understanding Golf Handicaps New to golf or confused by golf handicaps index system? Don’t worry, you don’t have to figure this out yourself. Here’s a guide to understanding golf handicaps. The current golf handicap system was introduced by the United States Golf Association (USGA) in the early 20th century. The USGA handicapping system received a major overhaul in the early 1980’s. At this time slope rating for golf courses joined the longstanding course rating as the methods of rating course difficulty. USGA Slope Rating is a number that represents the difficulty of a course. The numbers range from 55 to 155. Slope rating is a ratio. The higher the slope, the more difficult the course. 113 is considered average. USGA Course Rating is an estimate of the average scores of the best rounds played by scratch players of that course. Course rating is simpler in that it is expressed in strokes. The handicap system was designed to “level the playing field” for golfers of differing abilities, so that those golfers can compete equally. The better the golfer you are, the lower golf handicap you will have. Other sports have “levelers” such as weight divisions in wrestling and boxing. Just as it

wouldn’t be reasonable for a 250 lb. boxer to fight one that weighs half his weight, it isn’t reasonable that a golfer with an average score of 98 should try to compete against someone with an average score of 75. Golf handicaps let the weaker player deduct a stroke from his score for that hole. Players of different ability levels figure their net score, which is their actual score minus the strokes they were allowed to deduct on respective holes. To take part in the USGA Handicap System, you must join an authorized golf club. Most golf courses have clubs that can issue handicap indexes, so finding one isn’t a problem. The handicap index is calculated using your 10 best scores of your 20 most recent rounds. Your official handicap index

is calculated by a complicated formula. It takes into account adjusted gross score, course rating, and slope rating. Beginner golf tip: if this seems confusing, not to worry. You don’t have to figure this out yourself! A course handicap determines how many strokes you are allowed on that course, depending on your handicap. Most golf courses have charts you can use to get their course handicap. If you don’t have a golf handicap yet and would like to know what your handicap would be, Google “golf handicaps” or “golf handicap calculator”. One should be easy to find. Enter the course and slope ratings for the tees you play. This should be on your scorecard. Then enter your adjusted gross score for a minimum of 5 of your most recent rounds. That is all you need to get a good idea of what your 18 hole handicap index will be. Once you have your golf handicap, you are ready to fairly compete with any other handicapped golfer in the world!

Tales from the Vine

by KATHERINE CHASE

Summer Fun on the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail Warm weather is here to stay, and I couldn’t be more excited about what that means for the wine trail. In the vineyards, it means the workers went from bundling up head to toe, to going home with a farmers tan. The vines themselves have all gone through the bud break stage and we’re starting to see some very small leaves appearing. Depending on weather conditions, the first protective spray (sulfur-an organic element) will soon be sprayed to protect the vinifera varieties against powdery mildew, which some of you may have experienced in your own garden on some of the larger leaf vegetables: squash, pumpkins, melons, etc. Inside the tasting room, the managers and guys and gals behind the scenes are getting their summer event lineups squared away, and it promises to be an exciting time! The fun begins on Thursday nights when both Six Mile Creek Vineyards and Lucas Vineyards host their summer concert series. At Six Mile Creek in Ithaca, you can look forward to hearing from popular bands such as Immortal Jellyfish, Purple Valley and Radio London. Lucas Vineyards kicks off their Nautie Summer Nights concert series on June 21st with Black Diamond Express and a different food truck each week. Friday night takes the fun to a higher level! Americana Vineyards hosts a ‘Friday Nite Pizza Party’ all year long, but it goes outside to their pavilion during the warmer months. You can look forward to weekly pizza specials from the café while listening to local bands such as Bob & Dee, The Tarps, and the Common Railers. Starting on July 6th, Buttonwood continued on pg 21

the perfect balance of excitement and anarchy. What truly sets DEADPOOL 2 apart from its countless counterparts, however, is the sheer charm, charisma, and delivery by its audacious star. Reynolds carries the film in a way that makes him as vital to DEADPOOL’s success as any other performer in any other movie you will see this year. The humor is virtually non-stop, and contains so many references and inside jokes that it almost feels like a game to spot them all. The supporting cast, including Brolin, Karan Soni, and standout co-star Zazie Beetz as the lucky Domino, add dimension to the story, and have a number of hilarious moments in their own right. There are a handful of phenomenal cameos, and I’m not sure if there has ever been a series of post-credits scenes that have ever, and I mean EVER, been better. Though it is unlikely to win over any new fans, DEADPOOL 2 is an absolute blast, and is the rare movie that I’m already counting down the days until I get to see it again to discover what I missed the first time around. A special thanks goes to Regal Cinemas at Destiny USA for allowing me attend this month’s film.

New Technology by NANCY ROBERTS

Drones and Film I was very fortunate, last summer, to be part of a “first ever.” In this case, it was the first New York State Fair Drone Film Festival. And the second annual festival will be coming up again at this year’s New York State Fair (August 26th is the date; 5 pm at the Home & Arts Building Theater). (www.dronefilmsfest.com) Of all of the technologies developed in recent years, the drone is definitely one of the more fascinating – and, like most technologies, it can be a force for both yin and yang. In essence, a drone is an unmanned aircraft than can be coupled with the technology to pilot it remotely, or by programming. Just down the Thruway “The NUAIR Alliance, a New York based not-for-profit coalition of more than 200 private and public entities and academic institutions working together to operate and oversee Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) testing in New York, Massachusetts and Michigan. Headquartered in Syracuse, NY, NUAIR supports the New York UAS Test Site at Griffiss International Airport in Rome, NY, one of just seven FAA-designated UAS test sites in the United States. (They) are at the forefront of public policy development, commercialization, and integration of UAS technology.” Griffis is central to a 50 mile (80km) Drone Testing Corridor, where tech and drone experts are finding the best ways to populate the skies with safe, expertly flown drones. (www.nuairalliance.org)

A very familiar drone that can be bought for personal use and promptly flown into trees before mastering how to fly it In downtown Syracuse, GENIUS NY has just opened the next round of competition for $2.75 million in investment funding to be shared among 6 finalists as it serves as the largest business accelerator for UAS (unmanned aircraft systems). (www.geniusny.com) Among the many projects being funded currently is DropCopter, a project to pollinate fruit trees and plants using drone technology as scientists search for the solution to the honey bee die-off. Drones dropping pollen save time, money, and fruit crops, from New York to California. And if you want more information about what’s new and exciting with drones, “UAS continued on pg 22

Central is “the central hub for information and news about the growing unmanned aerial systems industry in New York State.” (uascentral.com) Which is to say: CNY is one of just a small handful of locations where drones are happening. What’s particularly fascinating about drones, if you haven’t seen one in operation, is that they can be big, powerful, and life-saving; or they can be small, swift, even toys. The first one I saw was, in fact, a toy. It was presented to a child several years ago as a gift – and immediately taken out, launched, and driven into a tree. Like a good toy, it was undamaged and happily launched again. But if you didn’t see last year’s festival, you might not realize that drones can move deep into otherwise inaccessible space, can be

In downtown Syracuse, GENIUS NY has just opened the next round of competition for $2.75 million in investment funding to be shared among 6 finalists as it serves as the largest business accelerator for UAS (unmanned aircraft systems). (www.geniusny.com) used in search-and-rescue operations, can fly for hours —days— without fatigue and can move up and down, side to side, hover, and glide gracefully from high above a location down to a landing without a lurch or a quiver. All of which makes them ideal for film and photography. The NYS Fair Drone Film Festival was created to celebrate the “art” of the drone, but that, as with all things drone, can mean many things. Initially, the aim was to demonstrate what beautiful shots could be taken from a drone – which allowed a camera to go places and do things not possible using a larger, piloted aircraft. Then the Festival decided to expand the criteria to include films that included drone footage, narrative film, and films about drones or industries that use them to aid their core mission. If a power line has a problem in a hard-to-reach location – send in the drones. If a child needs medicine deep in a jungle that would require hours if not days to traverse – send in the drones. If a real estate agent wants to show properties with least effort and best effect – send in the drones. One individual’s business stumbled upon the utility of “seeing” sports activities from above, enabling a coach or athlete to “see” performance and coordination as never before, and at a fraction of what it might have cost to accomplish the same end with an aircraft. Oh, and did I mention how quiet and non-intrusive a drone can be? There is also just the “wow” factor of drone acquired photography and film. I was enchanted with a perfectly framed photo of colorful beach umbrellas lined upon on a sunny day; the snaking path of rivers and streams when seen from high, high above; a red backpack in the corner of spectacular frames as the videographer shot himself hiking We Lo v through the Scottish Highlands – from above. That is to say: imagination, and a story to e We Fe Our Fr ie nds, ed The tell, coupled with a drone can equal some really fantastic results! m There are nine categories for entries, from professional organizations to still photogFood! Tast y raphers to students, and films can be very short, or full length. A single individual or organization can enter in multiple categories or with multiple films/photographs. There is a separate category just for drone films shot in or featuring New York State. To enter, visit the website, or go to: https://filmfreeway.com/NYSFairDroneFilmFestival if you’re ready to go. And if you just want to enjoy the State Fair even more this year, stop by the Home & Arts Building Theater for a little idea of what drones can do.

Exercise & Fitness by JENNIFER NASTASI GUZELAK

Persevering with Parkinson’s

hanging up the phone, she looked down to read some of the notes she had written. The handwriting was cramped, the words crowded together and the letter sizes unusually small. It was illegible. “I was always looking for signs in my husband, cramped handwriting being one of them,” Cretaro said. His father had suffered from Parkinson’s. I remember thinking, “Am I so worried about my husband getting Parkinson’s, that I’m talking myself into it?” In the early stages of Parkinson’s some people experience “freezing” a sudden, but temporary inability to start movement or to continue rhythmic, repeated movements. On one occasion Karen found herself frozen – unable to move in the middle of a step class. There was another incident where she struggled to do a set of jumping jacks. In her head she was jumping into the air, spreading her legs shoulder-width apart and swinging her arms out

I was standing at the trainer’s station with personal trainer Dan Gaglianese when 64-year-old Karen Cretaro, came walking out of the locker room. She looked as good as I remembered; sculpted arms, toned legs, a warm smile, and skin that had a natural radiance. A picture of health and fitness. Karen was no stranger to rigorous workouts. She had been a member at Champions Fitness Center for over twenty years and in her early forties taught both low-impact aerobics and step class. As she approached us, I wondered, did she feel as good as she looked? This year, more than 50,000 people worldwide will hear four life-changing words: “You have Parkinson’s disease.” Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive and chronic, degenerative neurological disorder that affects one in 100 people over age 60. Symptoms can be so subtle in the early stages that they go unnoticed, leaving the disease undiagnosed for years. It is challenging to live with, as it causes progressive changes to motor function as well as many other non-motor symptoms, including depression, sleep problems, pain and cognitive dysfunction. There were many times when Karen recalls feeling off. At her training sessions, she would tell Dan that she felt “funny.” Sometimes when she stood up should would feel lightheaded and dizzy. Symptomatic neurogenic orthostatic hypotension —when a person’s blood pressure drops suddenly after standing up— is quite common in those with Parkinson’s disease, affecting 15 to 50 percent of people. She had been working on exercises for some of the hip issues she had, but now her neck muscles were stiff, her posture stooped, and her walk could be best described as; peculiar. So, in January of 2015 Karen and Dan made a “New Year’s Resolution” to address some of the physical struggles she was presented with. Cretaro first noticed her Parkinson’s symptoms in September of 2015. She and Burgers, Wings, Pizza And Full Dinner Menu! her husband, Mike Cretaro, had owned an auto body OPEN FATHER’S DAY! shop in North Syracuse for more than 30 years. After

over her head, but her body just wouldn’t move. How stupid she thought. This was something she had done for years. As more symptoms began to appear, she searched for answers. “I would find articles online that would say, ‘10 common symptoms of Parkinson’s,’ and I remember going through one checklist and it said if you have experienced four or five of these symptoms you should see a neurologist,” Cretaro said. “I had checked seven of them.” Karen told me about a trip she and Mike took up to Alexandria Bay. They took in the sights and planned on having dinner at a local restaurant that evening. As they walked her legs began to feel heavy, and weak. At one appointment Cretaro’s doctor asked if she had trouble swallowing. She thought to herself, now why would he ask me that? Not long afterwards, she was sitting down for dinner with her husband and nearly choked on a mouthful of food. Fearing that she may throw up, Karen quickly excused herself from the table. For almost a year, she had been trying to hide her symptoms from her family, friends and customers. In the fall of 2016, after much persuasion from her two daughters and several conversations with her primary care doctor (about the importance of going), Karen made an appointment to see a neurologist. After conducting several tests and ruling out everything else, Karen was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. It was hard to accept. On the car ride home, she remembers thinking that this was something she could live with. It wasn’t a brain tumor or stage four cancer (which she had just lost a dear friend to). This was something she could manage. Karen’s daughter, Julie Lombardi, works at Upstate Medical University and has worked with people with Parkinson’s disease for over 10 years. Looking back, she remembers her mother calling her to ask about a foot cramp. Julie told her to work on her posture. It wasn’t until the foot cramp progressed into abnormal movement of the foot and her arms started swinging less when she walked that she started to take a closer look. As more symptoms began to appear everything started to add up. At first, she struggled to understand how, after years of working with Parkinson’s patients, she missed the disease she knew so well in her own mother. She says. “It’s definitely been an ironic turn of events to have her get this disease.” Every six months, Cretaro completes the Parkinson’s disease diagnostics test in Rochester. These tests are used to determine if the disease has progressed. The exam includes various movement and reaction tests. Karen also sees a speech therapist. The muscle impairment caused by Parkinson’s disease can affect how a person speaks. Cretaro noticed that when she spoke, the people around her table would lean forward. They weren’t hanging on her every word, they were having trouble hearing her. Her speech therapist will record her talking and play it back. Even though Karen feels like she is yelling, she can hear that she’s barely projecting her voice. In Conclusion: Although Parkinson’s disease can’t be cured, taking an active role in treatment, including adhering to a medication schedule and making healthy lifestyle choices, can provide a sense of control and help people with the disease live their lives to the fullest. Cretaro says, “I think sometimes really bad things happens to really good people. There’s no reason for it, it just happens.” Karen’s optimistic outlook is both admirable and an inspiration to other’s who are afflicted with this disease. So, what would Karen say to someone who suffers from Parkinsons? She would say, “stay strong, fight back and never lose hope.” Sometimes hope is all you need to persevere. Pasta’13s Reasons Why

When the series 13 REASONS WHY was released on Netflix on March 31, 2017 it instantly became a lightning rod of controversy. The teen-centric drama centered around the suicide of Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford), a student who battled bullying, harassment, and ultimately, a sexual assault. It was an unflinching, harsh examination of the high school hierarchy, and forced parents and children alike to face the ugly realities facing today’s youth. With graphic depictions of rape and wrist-cutting, it was never an easy viewing experience, but it did encourage a dialogue that was greatly needed. The first season of 13 REASONS WHY was a well-rounded, binge-worthy affair. The young cast tackled the troubling subject matter exceptionally well, and the pace of each episode, combined with the mystery surrounding Hannah’s fate kept the viewer riveted from start to finish. The final episode was met with outrage due to its startling nature, with some parent groups calling for a boycott of the show. Rather than pulling the plug, Netflix gave the green light for season 2. Released on May 18, the second season of 13 REASONS WHY has once again become beacon of controversy. Emboldened by the response of its freshman venture, the show delves deeper into the murky and horrifying themes previously explored, and does so with uncomfortable gratuity. In the aftermath of the discovery of Hannah’s tapes, her mother (Kate Walsh) is suing the school district, arguing that they did nothing to help her daughter in her time of need. Each episode centers around one particular character and their testimony in the trial. Through their words, we learn more of the events that led up to Hannah’s demise, and the tribulations they faced both before, and THANK YOU FOR VOTING US after. While there are certainly new insights to be found, the hour-long episodes, particularly the first three, felt like a plodding rehash of what we had already known. In these early 1100 AVERY AVE, SYRACUSE, NY moments, the second season felt like an

unnecessary attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the first, failing to progress the story in any meaningful way. Bryce (Justine Prentice) is still a bully, Jessica (Alisha Boe) is still devastated by what happened to her, Zach (Ross Butler) is still conflicted between loyalty to his friends and being a decent human being, and Clay (Dylan Minnette) is still in love with the recently deceased Hannah. Though she may be gone, he still converses with her on a regular basis, as her spirit remains his constant companion. A few of these moments have been publi- DISTRIBUTED BY: Netflix cized already, though for spoiler purposes, I won’t reveal GRADE: C+ them here. Suffice it to say, creator Brian Yorkey felt it was important to be as graphic as possible in order to illustrate the true realities facing our children today. It’s difficult to criticize a show that brings bullying, abuse, and suicide to the forefront of the national conversation, particularly when there are daily stories about the horrors unfolding in schools across the country. Having said this, it’s difficult to gauge what can be considered a timely exploration, and what is merely an exploitative melodrama. This second season, at varying times, feels like a little of both. There is so much angst, debauchery, and abuse (physical, emotional, sexual, and substance) that unfolds in every single episode, it has an aura of existing as a collection of bullet points rather than a pointed exploration into the heart of these horrors. And, while the series makes the attempt to remained as grounded in reality as possible, I believe there is a certain obligation to illustrate to the kids that are watching this that there are consequences for those who harm others, and redemption for those who speak up. For the most part, this vital element is lacking in 13 REASONS, and could have done far more to bring about the vital changes that it seems to be promoting.

Preventive Medicine by DR. BARRY

Joint Juice Anyone? For once I am writing about something non controversial … or at least less controversial than arguing about statin drugs, proton pump inhibitors, calcium supplements, dairy and vaccines. This months article is about a supplement that could help you look and feel younger but presents no danger of overdose … that product is collagen. Collagen comes from the greek word for glue … kolia … There are twenty eight different types of collagen and this protein is found throughout the body in the bones, skin, teeth, joints and blood vessels. -Most of this is type one collagen, type two is in the cartilage … type three is the mesh around your intestines etc. … type four is found in your respiratory tract … and type five collagen is found in hair and cell surfaces. Now the problem with collagen is that we lose it over time. Starting as young as 20 you start to lose collagen as you age. You can supplement with collagen and maybe offset some of this natural loss. We get collagen from chicken, bone marrow, fish skin, the hides of animals, etc. Remember you need the vitamin C to use collagen properly so if you are going to supplement with collagen you should be taking vitamin C as well. Also you need acid in your stomach. So if you are taking a ppi (like Nexium or Prilosec) —which you know I think you should not be taking chronically— if you are taking this class of drug the collagen will not be absorbed. Collagen needs to be taken on an empty stomach for best absorption. Collagen is rebuilt on a constant basis in your body. Collagen is broken down into fragments which contact collagen production cells and stimulates production of more collagen. Starting in your twenties the stimulation of production slows down. This low collagen production may affect skin and joints. The collagen supplements serve not to replace the collagen in your body but to stimulate collagen production. Collagen has a typical amino acid

Starting as young as 20 you start to lose collagen as you age protein configuration which is hydrolyzed in processing which makes the protein fragments shorter and easier to digest. What is collagen supplementation good for? Well it’s clearly good for your skin … biopsy proven research has shown that collagen supplementation improves markers of aging in the skin. There have been lots of independent studies looking at this and the results show consistent improvement in skin parameters. But that’s not all … multiple studies show that collagen —specifically type 2 collagen that’s found in cartilage tissues— has been shown to decrease the pain of arthritis especially in the knees and in one recent study appearing in the international journal of medical sciences, “four out of five osteoarthritis sufferers who took a daily 40 mg oral dose of undenatured type-ii collagen (“uc-ii”) experienced less pain, and their pain dropped by an average e of 26%.” Even as far back as 2006 a study done in athletes came to this conclusion: “This was the first clinical trial of 24-weeks duration to show improvement of joint pain in athletes who were treated with the dietary supplement collagen hydrolysate. The results of this study have implications for the use of collagen hydrolysate to support joint health and possibly reduce the risk of joint deterioration in a high-risk group. Despite the study’s size and limitations, the results suggest that athletes consuming collagen hydrolysate can reduce parameters (such as pain) that have a negative impact on athletic performance.” Collagen is also important for your gut health. -It contains lots of glycine and glutamine … similar to levels find in bone broth. Both of these proteins support the good bugs in your gut. The only downside to collagen supplementation is that depending on the source the supplement may contain too much calcium but this is something a routine blood test can check out for you. So, if you want to improve your skin try collagen types 1 and 3 which are usually found together. If you want to ease your joints you want collagen type 2. The nice thing about this supplement is you should notice the benefit within a month. Why not give it a try and see for yourself. Until next month … get well … stay well. J T Barry MD

My Mind To Yours

by DEBRA MERRYWEATHER

Getting There from Here Last year, I got to see sights from a car making its way on I90 across Lake Washington and on into Seattle toward the Puget Sound. During this ride with family, one person pointed out landmarks while another monitored traffic congestion reports from a smart phone app. Smart phone alerts together with flashing road signs guide Seattle area drivers away from traffic bottlenecks. Toll roads offer quicker travel for higher fees during peak traffic times. Viewed on a national map from a Seattle perspective, I90, with an eastbound floating bridge over Lake Washington, appears to bypass Syracuse while it connects Seattle to Boston. That same perspective might view I81 carrying traffic from points south to and north through Syracuse to the I90 interchange located north in some unlabeled area. (The Town of Salina) Maps reflect movement and coalescence. Last year, I had considered driving to Seattle because, during my last flight west, something inside my brain caused me to lose consciousness. When I regained consciousness, I at first couldn’t follow what was happening moment to moment. Confusing memories, which clearly involved me, but of which I’d been unaware, flowed into my mind while words in the magazine I tried to read seemed to swirl on the page. Later, in the years following this episode, other health issues led me to learn about neurotransmission, vasoconstriction, penumbras, TIA and TGA. I read about TGA, transient global amnesia, on an FAA website. Our brains guide us. During my brain disruption, likely a stroke, I wasn’t always sure who I was, but I knew where to look to find my driver’s license. I was able to name the family members in my wallet photos and use that information to identify the people staring at me from around the dinner table. I knew I was visiting family and the people around me looked like the family members in my photos. Our short term working memory identifies information and passes it on into our long term semantic (procedural) and episodic (historical narrative) memory. A blockage to one group of neurons causes others to fire. Thoughts and memories can emerge out of context. Over time, neurogenesis and neuroplasticity can reconnect disconnected brain areas. Still, when they’re happening, brain disruptions are frightening. I tried to act normal. I now know people tried to help me.

The Write Stuff by NANCY ROBERTS

The Causes of the American Civil War Problems in American Civilization Edited by Edwin C. Rozwenc Amherst College Lessons from High School and History When I was in High School —the Pebble Hill School that was, the MPH of today— I had an American History teacher who was famous for his never-ending pipe ceremonies (he would empty, refill, tamp down, light and smoke his pipe while teaching class) and for teaching me one of the best history lessons I ever learned: read original sources. For an historian, this will come as no surprise, and a friend I met years later shared with me his adventures in original documents in ancient Spanish – mastering not only the language, but the handwriting and lack of a formal grammar and spelling, so that he could learn what the Spanish were thinking at the time. But for many students, history books are a long, boring slog through somebody’s lists, interpretations, and analyses. Another teacher in that same school, Art History this time, would quiz us by showing us a piece of art we had never seen, and then ask us to play historian/sleuth by determining “when” the painting or sculpture or architecture was created by exploring the subject, style, and sophistication of the piece. That is – what was of interest to people in, say 1300? What

technologies did they have? Why did they build buildings or sculpt icons? Again, my object lesson was: what was the thinking of the people then? Still a third history teacher —World History— would pace the room telling us stories. Just that. Yes, dates and dynasties – but most memorable was that the narrative flowed so that the people in them came alive, and we could inhabit the time and the smells and the sounds of the period. She helped us climb inside, so we were being rather than observing. Once more, that reminder that to try and think with people rather than just about them teaches you a different lesson – both perspectives are important, but unique. I was lucky, too, to have parents who both loved history and books, so we had many books around us, and many of them were very old – fragile paper printed in two columns with antique fonts. Books that had inscriptions in the front, were bound with string and glue, and smelled a little musty – many of them with one of those paper “Ex Libris” stamps glued to the inside front cover with the name of some owner written proudly on them. The language and preoccupations, the assumptions and lack thereof, of the time in which the book was written were written as clearly as the subject of the book. Then one day along came the film, Somersby, set in the Civil War. The director chose to take the viewer inside an antebellum plantation house of the South – and uses only the light that would have been available. It was stunning to me, and I have never forgotten it —me, a child of artificial light and 150 watt bulbs— how much of their lives people in the past lived in the dark! Another moment of seeing with the eyes of the person living THEN. All in all, I was fortunate to know from a relatively young age that while history can be analyzed and explained and understood knowing the outcome, to be able to put oneself in the place of those living it is almost a form of acting – to understand a time, “feel” it as if you were in it. Try it. It may surprise you. Oh, and speaking of the Civil War: my parents were given to re-fighting it every so often; perhaps as a proxy for other arguments, or more likely because they had different ideas about why the war was fought and but certainly because it was an issue about which their worldviews differed. Without saying who took which position, and without denying the glarcontinued on pg 41

Getting There From Here continued from pg 31 Our nervous systems operate with a Default Mode Network, which simply put, reflects how we “are” based on our experience. For instance, soldiers, first responders and trauma victims might seem hypervigilant. The brain maps and stores everything. Specific brain areas control specific functions. Physical therapy, yoga and exercise can help reintegrate mind body connections damaged by stroke or other trauma. The concrete connectors we drive across daily don’t self-repair. Physical movement of a bridge doesn’t strengthen the bridge. Good connectivity in one place assists good connectivity elsewhere. In 2011, when replacement of Route 81 through Syracuse was being proposed, I attended the I81 Challenge at the Oncenter. As I wound my way through the maze-like exhibit of wall displays and table top dioramas of possible future I81/City of Syracuse configurations, I started feeling dizzy. My vertigo increased as I looked back and forth amid photographs and diagrams showing railroad and utility easements and their proximity to existing buildings. I struggled to evaluate individual issues amid big picture possibilities. Other people seemed to be writing down suggestions. Why couldn’t I? I left the Oncenter wondering if the dizziness I was feeling stemmed from a concussion I’d experienced some months prior, or, was I just an air-head. My first go-to answer is “what’s wrong with me” which isn’t an answer. Detailed answers lay hidden in memory I lost to differing traumatic brain injuries. I’ve started to avoid public policy discussions: too upsetting. During a recent discussion concerning physician assisted suicide, one participant reported that in the 1960’s, electroshock treatments successfully changed the minds of terminally ill patients who wanted to end their suffering. ECT disrupts brain circuitry causing memory loss. Breaking connections to individual infrastructure and consciousness does change peoples’ minds. Should we be changing peoples’ minds or helping them some other way? Demolishing connectors and connections creates chaos in the moment and long after. What benefits one might not be good for another, and how “not good” things can get doesn’t manifest immediately. Disconnections, dislocations and reconnections in thinking and mobility change how individuals and groups map their lives. My connections are still reconnecting. When I drive from Syracuse along Erie Boulevard East, I can now remember when farm laborers in yellow raincoats used to pick lettuce from fields where I690 now stands. Everything connects to something.

was our Lucky Winner for the

Night on the Town Contest! He chose MUDDY WATERS for dinner & will arrive in style in a limo from EXPRESS LIMOUSINE WITH CENTRAL NEW YORK

Photo does not represent actual winners.

24th Congressional District Election continued from pg 13 appropriate efforts and allow the primary to proceed with integrity and issues and let the primary, the people, determine who is most likely to gain back this seat so vital to human fairness in America. Then together we will take back this vital seat and play a huge role in America’s future. I support Juanita because I have witnessed her character and ability. I offer to you she is a rare and highly talented individual driven by her sense of justice and a love for America. Her resume is extraordinary and includes five years in the United States Navy Judge Advocates Program (JAGC) where she handled high profile criminal cases, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Her character was fine-tuned by this experience serving with those that keep us free. Upon completion of her military service, Juanita relocated with her family to Upstate New York where she accepted a position with the New York State Department of Education where she worked with Law Enforcement directing investigations in 19 Upstate Counties. In 2001, Juanita accepted a legal position with Syracuse University and soon thereafter was promoted to Associate Dean of Students. Juanita also served as an adjunct professor teaching legal issues in higher education. During this time, Juanita was selected by then Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton to be a member of the New York State Military Selection Review Board. In 2008, Juanita was appointed by then Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to serve New York State as an Assistant Attorney General. Two years later, Juanita was appointed by the Mayor of Syracuse to serve as Corporation Counsel and lead the city’s legal office. Her legal and prosecutorial experience will be invaluable in this world of legal folly intrinsic to Trump and his strange following. She will insure partisan interference and corrupt activity is addressed and fair process is observed. She will set the standard. Here is my take away and why I support Juanita Perez Williams. “Not just locally but in the United States House of Representatives there are few of such caliber, able to influence and reset course. These are rare talents. Juanita has the perseverance, the experience, the fight, the sense for justice, the compassion, the ability to achieve, and the desire to serve that are requisite to the special leadership needed to cause change. When such quality is present in one individual we must recognize the rare window of opportunity. The irony here is that I am not overdoing this. Juanita is made of the “Right Stuff.” A designation designed to show that Astronauts are awesome doers and pioneers. Congress sank to a 14% approval rating in a new Quinnipiac University poll. Juanita Perez Williams will be a beacon, forging a restoring path, representing how to earn the people’s approval, with the integrities that made this a great land. I am never sure how these kinds of endings appear to others. I served. Juanita Served. As did so many. And that is important. Those sent into danger that never came home should always be a part of the conversation. Juanita will do the right thing. So here it is, my oft made reference to this poem that defines what we must never forget. Herewith: When things settle in, and Juanita takes hold in Washington, you may hear a wisp in the air as Flanders Fields rises and crisply salutes, and you may well feel shivers of patriotism as you hear of Juanita’s response to lobbyists that shame their sacrifice. It is just the way she is. ISSUES Please note that each has been failed by John Katko. Just look around. This election is about America and our great people and restoring course. It is all about issues. Each worthy of and seeking worthy Champions in Congress. Trump/Katko and the lobbies believe interests should be devised for the 1%. Here are a few issues that are being decimated and dismantled by the Omnibus bill that gives a trillion to the 1%. Gun Safety and the NRA: Now we have Santa Fe, Texas. 10 more dead. NRA control of and prevention of good sense regulation to save the lives of our little ones is perhaps our most glaring example of leadership disgrace. Again, the bottom line is moneyed favor. They gave Trump 21 million. Several senators received millions each and the House also received millions. The price to ignore dead children. The NRA is financed primarily by the Gun Lobby. Their interests are in gun sales, not people. Their members are duped. Just like with tobacco the lives that are lost do not matter. Trump legislation actually undid restrictions aimed at mental illness. Democrats are Pro 2nd Amendment. No one is coming for your guns. Unless you are mentally unstable. No amount of money should allow dying and bleeding little ones scattered all over our schools. John Katko accepts NRA donations and defends the NRA. Juanita Perez Williams will defend the safety and lives of our children. Medicare: This spring, the House of Representatives passed a budget proposal that would END MEDICARE AS WE KNOW IT and make significant cuts to Medicaid that will leave millions of seniors, children and disabled without access to the care they need. The plan replaces Medicare with a voucher system. Please think about this for a moment. The take-way is that this Republican effort would not exist if it did not take money out of the programs. We all know it is going to the 1%. According to the Congressional Budget Office, seniors would spend three quarters of their income on health care. As a result, 10’s of millions would drop their coverage. Medicare and Medicaid dismantling will crush our most needy and vulnerable. Cruel lonely death among our disabled, young and old will riddle our system. Katko voted for this bill. Juanita Perez Williams will defend our seniors and kids and seek and protect human justice. Health Care: The Omnibus bill gravely degrades the Affordable care act. This will limit the availability of the best in health care and often health care itself to those that can afford high priced insurance. The bill itself will cause 10’s of thousands of deaths in the first year. As repeal proceeds deaths will increase to 43,000 to over 100,000 per year. If Trump and Republicans such as John Katko are re-elected this course will reach unspeakable genocidal proportion by the end of the Trump Presidency. All this to give the 1% 1 trillion of the 1.3 trillion omnibus funds. As Trump touts opioids continued on pg 42

The Causes of the Civil War continued from pg 32 ing challenge to any discussion of that particular time and that particular war (slavery), as we kids listened we learned that there were *many* forces at play - and many sentiments being played upon – as that war was brewing. It should have come as no surprise to me, then, when I was digging around in a box of old books and stumbled upon a book of speeches, essays, and critical writings —most of the period— about the Civil War, along with my high school “me” notes taken as I debated for The South (it was a formal debate, and I was assigned the position). Our arguments were to be drawn only from the readings in the book, which led with arguments for and against secession prior to the war —including such notables as Jefferson Davis and Abraham Lincoln— and followed with the concept of “revisionist history,” in which the very idea of re-visiting history from the standpoint of 50, 100, 200 years later, is examined. The book still fascinates – perhaps more than ever in our current climate of careful speech, verboten ideas and even “thought police.” I began to read the book again, wondering as I did if students in a high school history class today would be permitted to have such a debate, let alone have at its heart the question: “what caused the American Civil War?” Of equal interest was the discussion in the excerpts and articles and speeches in the book of the very idea of a “fixed” history of a subject: at least as important as the subject of the “causes” of the war was the debate of the value of “interpreting” history, and whether we can reach a better or more informed insight as we draw further and further from an event. There IS the “zoom” factor of statistical analysis: any individual woman may be taller than any individual man, but if you “zoom out” to a large enough population, men will predictably be taller than women. At the time this book was compiled, the “zoom factor” was not quite 100 years, and for many of the essays, it was still a “living” debate. The further we move from any event, the harder it becomes to remember, or imagine, how it might have felt to live in those times, to be of that generation, to limit oneself to what people then knew and didn’t now – what the manners, mores, values, and belief system were (particularly without judging it from our standpoint today). And if I learned nothing else from my various experiences in studying history, there is still —and always will be— much to gain from “seeing” it, as best we can, through the eyes of those living it, as well as examining it in the light of its consequences; of trying to see modern parallels in the hope of making better choices, or, as Chesterton warns us – not knocking down a fence in the road that might still have a purpose just because we can.

24th Congressional District Election continued from pg 40 only a fraction of the need is included in this bill and access to that is decimated by removing access to the most in need. Positives alleged are actually harmed in this bill. (You are not supposed to digress like this when you write but) I am baffled and overcome with a sense of disappointment in realizing this is all true and yet there is still debate – Is right and justice and love of all others gone in that many Americans? A lot of us

or join a union.” The minimum wage needed to survive, once degrading, is now sought. That is the Republican path to the third world for the vast majority of us. John Katko has voted over and over to widen that path for more of us. The retardation of progress this rich giveaway bill will cause is stunningly inept. With a President like Trump an unread 2,400-page bill is the absolute ultimate epitome of irresponsibility. John Katko voted for this Omnibus American atrocity. Criminal justice reform: Nothing is more wrong in human-

be “life and death for our grandchildren” with every indication sooner rather than later. The irony is that with intelligent leadership economies can reform and improve in keep-

Just look around. This election is about America and our great people and restoring course. It is all about issues. Each worthy of and seeking worthy Champions in Congress. are asking these kinds of questions. This needs to end. John Katko votes with Trump 92% of the time. The other 8% he is not present or it is an inconsequential matter. He is not a moderate. That is a vote getting lie. His voting record is extreme right. You cannot get further right than this hideous Omnibus giveaway to the rich and decimate the poor the bill. John Katko signed it. Financial: Until Citizens United repeal is achieved and measures to end bribery in American Leadership are achieved, we will not have “the best that we can” in Government. Human leadership quality is critical to every urgent issue. The Omnibus Bill is a result of a purchased government. This is a systemic poison which must be acknowledged. Democrats plan to fight for institutional reform that would challenge big banks, raise the minimum wage and overturn Citizens United. Democrats support an updated and modernized version of Glass-Steagall and breaking up too-big-tofail financial institutions that pose a systemic risk to the stability of our economy. The Democratic Platform also calls to reform the Federal Reserve so that it is more representative of America as a whole, and to fight to make sure that executives at financial institutions are not allowed to serve on the boards of regional Federal Reserve banks or select its members. A crucial platform element that has been fervently supported by Democrats is an increase in the minimum wage. The 2016 platform reads that “Democrats believe that the current minimum wage is a starvation wage and must be increased to a living wage. No one who works full time should have to raise a family in poverty. We believe that Americans should earn at least $15 an hour and have the right to form

ity than killing the innocent. Our system, has many grave faults and does just that with the death penalty. Some may feel some deserve this, but we are incapable of accurate determination. Democrats support abolishing the death penalty, seeking alternative sentencing, reforming mandatory minimum sentences, and closing private prisons and detention centers.” Few things are as sickening as private for-profit prisons. Private prisons are a lucrative industry, benefiting heartless corporations at great expense and harm to humans that have erred, (they actually lobby against alternative sentencing) municipal governments and impacted communities. We alone incarcerate 22 percent of the worlds prisoners. We are 4.4 percent of the population. China has 1 billion 379 million people. The U.S. has 325 million. We incarcerate 3 ½ times more citizens than China with a billion less people. Women’s rights: Equal pay, equal treatment, and equal rights sought for 240 years, equality in the workplace, violence against women, and paid sick and parental and maternity leave are all part of the Equal Rights Amendment that Democrats are fighting for. The bill John Katko just signed decimates a women’s rights to choose and puts this vital decision in his and his friend’s hands. The bill dismantles decades of Women’s Rights efforts in sneaky, disgusting language buried in its 2400 pages. Combating climate change: The President does not care beyond his term. He seeks daily accolade and will happily destroy the future to look good now. Trump dismisses science and the rest of the world and refers to Climate Change as a “hoax.” Democrats have marked climate change as one of the crucial topics in this year’s platform. Climate Change listed as an “issue” here may well

ing with pursuing a course that will protect the future of humanity. LGBT Rights: Every American, no matter their race, sex, ethnicity or national origin, language, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, or disability, is equal, and Democrats are fighting for them. Democrats have a long and proud history of defending civil rights and expanding opportunity for all Americans. From the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act in 2009 to including marriage equality in the party platform in 2012, Democrats have fought to end discrimination in all forms. No matter who you are, who you love, where you’re from, or how you worship, Democrats are fighting for you. Education: Democrats know that every child, no matter who they are, how much their families earn, or where they live, should have access to a high-quality education, from preschool through high school and beyond. Republicans defy this thinking at every turn. John Katko’s and Donald Trump’s tax bill dismantles decades of protections for kids. This unread bill is an American disaster with John Katko’s signature. Democrats believe all children should be able to lead happy, successful lives. Democrats believe that funding, including fair pay for teachers and equality throughout for all children should be reflected in this pursuit. Infrastructure: Like most of what Trump offers in the Omnibus bill, and what it purports to enhance, is actually degraded. Infrastructure is not funded and what he speculates in tax credits is two trillion short of need. Perhaps the most significant problem in the entire Trump agenda is that lying is just fine to appease and get approval. This should be clear as out of a 1.3 trillion dollar bill, a trillion goes to the 1%. The money needed for infrastructure is not even included. There is nowhere near enough remaining to do the rest. This bill fails dirty water (Flint still does not have clean water) crumbling power grids, roads and potholes and crumbling bridges. Again, Katko voted for this heinous bill. I leave you with a brief excerpt from the United States Navy Ethos that describes the character of those that serve: “Integrity is the foundation of our conduct; respect for others is fundamental to our character; decisive leadership is crucial to our success. We are patriots, forged by the Navy’s core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. In times of war and peace, our actions reflect our proud heritage and tradition. We defend our Nation and prevail in the face of adversity with strength, determination, and dignity” Let’s take a big step in bringing America back. Please vote for Juanita Perez Williams.
