Summer 2019 Preview Even though I’m pretty sure we still have one good snow storm on the horizon, on paper, it appears that summer just around the corner. While this means trips to the beach, days out at the ballpark, and yard games galore, it also means that another summer movie season is upon us. While I am looking forward to blockbusters like GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS (May 31), ROCKETMAN (May 31), THE LION KING (JULY 19), and THE KITCHEN (AUGUST 9), the three films below rest securely at the top of my list. TOY STORY 4 (Opening June 21) If there is any chance of a film coming close to the numbers that the latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going to do at the box office this summer, there is no doubt that it
will be TOY STORY 4. The latest venture from Pixar brings back (arguably) the most iconic characters from their catalog (with the possible exception of the FINDING NEMO crew) and there’s little doubt that folks will come out in droves. Though it certainly doesn’t come as a huge surprise that the franchise is getting another installment, I thought that the third film ended on such a perfectly sweet, emotionally draining (yet beautifully rewarding) note, that there really was no point in heading back to the land where Pixar began. At the same time, Buzz, Woody, Rex, Ham, Jessie, and their pals are so endearing, and so familiar and welcome, that it’s a joyous surprise to know that we’ll get to see them once again. The introductions of new characters worked in TOY STORY 2 (Jessie, Bullseye, Stinky Pete) and Toy Story 3 (Lotso and Ken) and it looks like there’s going to be a number of additions this time around as well. New cast members include Keanu Reeves, Christina Hendricks, and Jordan Peele (among others) and it will be entertaining to see how they all fit in with the litany familiar favorites. What’s particularly interesting, is that the TOY STORY brand has traveled well beyond the realm of mere family entertainment. The audience is no longer a collection of kids and the parents who tag along, but a sampling of all ages and demographics who show no shame in letting their laughter bellow, and their tears flow.

SPIDER-MAN: FAR AWAY FROM HOME (Opening July 2) We are only a few months removed from witnessing the devastating events of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, and as this article goes to print, the blockbuster is still raking in the cash at the box office. Standing as one of the biggest movie events in the history of the medium, you would think it would be difficult for any comic-book adventure to follow in its footsteps. Though the future of a few Marvel Cinematic Universe characters is certainly in question, there’s little doubt that Spidey will still be flying high. Standing as arguably the most beloved character in the MCU, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is a likable, hilarious, relatable superhero who, along with Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther, likely stands as the future of the studio. With the intriguing addition of Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio, FAR FROM HOME will give us our first glimpse of the aftermath of INFINITY WAR, and will certainly provide an indication of where the MCU goes from here. It will also test the public’s interest in the continuation of the Marvel saga. While I doubt that SPIDERMAN will do AVENGERS numbers at the box-office, I do believe that it has a shot to be the biggest hit of the summer, and will

help solidify young Holland as a top-notch Hollywood talent. ONCE UPON A TIME … IN HOLLYWOOD (Opening July 26) Though it seems almost impossible to fathom, as of this October, it will have been 25 years since PULP FICTION was originally released. The incredible, groundbreaking, staggeringly entertaining film not only emerged as one of the greatest films of all time, but established Quentin Tarantino as an instant legend. His first film, RESERVOIR DOGS, was phenomenal in its own right, and then subsequent ventures such as KILL BILL VOLUMES 1 & 2, INGLORIOUS BASTERDS, and DJANGO UNCHAINED further cemented his status as a fearless, auteur filmmaker who defied conventions and obliterated boundaries. Initially rumored to be Tarantino’s “Charles Manson film,” early indications point to a much more subversive experience that explores the Hollywood Golden Age that came to an abrupt end in the late 1960’s. Though the heinous crimes perpetrated by Manson’s family is a specter that hangs over the story, much of the film follows Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) an aging TV star who still longs to find success, and Dalton’s stunt double and pal Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt.) The story of the two friends converge with the grim and sordid Quentin Tarantino tale of Dalton’s next door neighbor, Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie). Any Tarantino film immediately becomes one of the most anticipated productions of the year, and this one is certainly no exception. With the promise of dramatics, humor, and horror, it is bound to be original and controversial, as each and every one of his previous films has been. A true artist whose unparalleled productions tread the fine line between B-grade and brilliance, Tarantino is a Mount Rushmore candidate with cinematic style to spare.

Jack Bocchino: Present! Jack was one of the first people to make me feel welcomed when I moved here and butted my way into the bustling music scene. As he approached me to say “hello,” and introduce himself, he had the look —yes there is a look— that told me he knew that I was new around here. We shook hands and chatted a bit. He had and still has the social grace of an ambassador. Then, I became aware that he was writing “this” column. And, I became a reader. And, by now as I see him out on the town —which is more than routinely— as a comfortable presence and positive energy in our scene. And that’s why I’m writing about Jack, this month.

As far as I’m concerned a music scene consists of two equal parts: Music makers and music lovers. Without either, the whole thing is just a great big “so-what.” And when my groups play out, the most important people in the room are not us guys in the band. It’s the people who come to see us. And I am very happy whenever I see Jack at shows. Hell, I bet if I went to five venues in one night, I’d see Jack at all of them. You, again. It wouldn’t matter the style or genre … he appears to dig it all. He’s grown to be such a part of it that he was honored very appropriately in this past year’s SAMMYs with a Lifetime Jack, camera in hand, out and about Achievement Award. I was particularly happy to see this happen because, even though Jack isn’t a musician Jack has been a contributing staple in the scene for a very long time. Thus, we owe a part of the success that the scene enjoys now to guys like Jack. And especially to Jack. Chuck Schiele: Thanks for doing this interview, Jack. It’s good to see you back in this column. Jack Bocchino: Thank you, Chuck. In a way, I miss writing this column, but thought it could be better served being written by a musician. CS: For how long have you been following and supporting Syracuse music? JB: First time … 1970. But, marriage and kids caused me to take a break around 1980 and happily spend time with the kids. Then I started to explore the local scene around 1995 with my 3 kids; each developing their own tastes in local and national musicians. I

was able to get them access to shows that were not considered “All-Ages” events when they were teens. Again, this was a highlight for me, to be able to share the local music scene with my kids. CS: Are you, yourself a musician? JB: No, Chuck. -Simply a music lover. ‘Had my opportunities to take lessons, but never took the leap. CS: What are your favorite aspects about the music in Syracuse? JB: Diversity. We have greats at every position in every genre. I’m happy to add that there seems to be an upswing in the diversity of venues as well. I love it all, but I do tend to gravitate to songwriters; especially younger ones. Give them a listen. They truly have much to say. CS: (Yes! What Jack said. Everybody go and discover a new songwriter.) When you were the writer for this column, what did you enjoy most about it? JB: The back stories. Musicians had so many reasons for wanting to do what they do, how they got there and the levels at which they chose to do it. I always felt that many continued on pg 6

Jack Bocchiino: Present! continued from pg 5 musicians in this town could take it to the next level, but they had their own personal reasons for staying where they’re at. For some, music is a part time thing. One person even said he was told by his Dad not to quit his day job, even though his talent and work ethic could surely carry him through a career in music. CS: Yeah, my Dad was a professional musician. He told me once, insightfully, how music was “a lousy way to starve.” (laughs) You recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2019 SAMMY’s. Tell us about it and what it means to you. JB: I was totally in disbelief and tried to resist the award. They stressed to me that it was not “one-note.” Not just for photography. Not just for my time writing this column. Not just for my attendance and attentiveness. But, a spirit that embodies a positivity about Syracuse and the music community. CS: Yup. JB: That was overwhelming, to say the least. CS: I’m always glad to see you out there, man. Even if you’re flirting with my chick. (laughs) Share with us a quicklist of the top ten artists from Syracuse that have become bookmarked into your brain over the years. JB: Oh my. Only 10? Well, I was a Dove groupie in 1970. (Can I list Larry Arlotta, Howie Bartollo, Rick Cua, Dave Hanlon, and Larry Serafini separately as 5 of my top 10?) Jamie Notarthomas and the Karen Savoca/Pete Heitzman duo because they ushered me back into local music, having seen them open for Greg Lake at a concert to benefit the Sara Anne Wood Rescue Foundation and made me realize the talent level in this town. Forgive me, but the rest of the list keeps changing, the longer I think about it. Why? JB: It’s a mood-altering escape for me. For the city? It’s culture. It takes place in ways and in venues that allow audience members to gather with friends and strangers alike and have a commonality for a moment. With summer on the way, the festival season is

beginning. Some of these festivals have music as the main theme. And for some, the music is secondary. But, in any case, there will be no shortage of music lovers at the festivals. CS: If you could play an instrument, which one would you choose to play? JB: I mentioned that I had opportunities to take lessons. In one of those opportunities, my uncle offered to buy a sax from one of his good friends and my Dad offered to arrange for lessons. So, I’d have to say saxophone. CS: What advice might you have for up-and-coming artists? JB: Take it all in. You might be committed to a genre, but get out and listen to other styles of music. You might be young and want to seek out the knowledge and wisdom of the elders in the scene, but don’t discount the knowledge and wisdom of some of the younger musicians. They have much to offer. CS: What advice might you have for up-and-coming music fans? JB: Ha. Take it all in. Don’t get hung up on genre titles or that the age and life experiences of the musicians are similar to those of yourself. Take it all in. CS: What’s in your music future? JB: Being out most nights listening to music has worked well for me. So, I see no reason to change that in the future. Admittedly, I’ve been gravitating to earlier shows and fortunately we have venues that cater to that. CS: Well, I will look forward to seeing you out there, my friend. And as far as I can tell, so will everyone else. Thank you, so much, for the part you play in this music scene. And thanks for doing this interview. JB: Thank you, Chuck. My pleasure. Picture this: You are outside under a pergola, sipping on a delightful glass of wine and snacking on a delicious charcuterie board. The sun is shine and a warm summer breeze is blowing gently on your face. You can sit at the cozy table or move into a comfy Adirondack chair near the fire pit. From either location you will be surrounded by a beautiful view of the trellises of bountiful vines that are growing the grapes in the wine you are enjoying. Now, does this sound like heaven or what? If you think you’ll have to go on vacation to get this experience think again! All you need to do is head over to the Greenwood Winery & Bistro at 6474 Collamer Road in East Syracuse. They are open Wednesday and Thursday from 11:30am to 8pm, Friday from 11:30am to 9pm, and Saturday from 2pm to 9pm. Be sure to stop by every Friday May through September to check out some of the areas greatest bands perform live! Kyle and I arrived at Greenwood Winery & Bistro on a sunny Thursday evening and we were immediately greeted and seated in the Bar area with a view of the grape vines and fire pit. Since we were at a winery we decided to order a flight so that we could sample several vintages. With so many great options to choose from we asked our friendly and informative server for suggestions and went from there! We tried the Seyval Blanc (a little and crisp white with attractive aromas of apricots, peaches and nectarines, R.S. 1%), Vidal Blanc (a slightly sweet and light white with a fruity finish and sweet grapefruit and pineapple aromas R.S. 1.6%), Baco Noir (A deeply pigmented wine, fruit-forward, with aromas of black fruits and caramel R.S. .3%), and Perplexity 2013 (an complex, yet refreshing red with a harmony of flavors including hints of blueberry, black cherry, spices, chocolate and vanilla. R.S. 08%.) We also absolutely had to try a glass of their delicious Collamere, which is their estate grown blend of five different varieties of American and French American hybrid including The Greenwood Greens Seyval, Riesling, Diamond,

Either we made great selections or, more likely, every wine at Greenwood Winery is delightful because we enjoyed ever sip! We started our meal with Greenwood Greens, their take on a CNY favorite made with escarole, hot cherry peppers, large pieces pancetta and topped with bread crumbs and aged parmesan. This dish has the perfect balance of flavor and spice and it is sure to please any “Greens” lover! We also couldn’t pass up an order of their Crispy Calamari, a gigantic serving of fresh, hand breaded calamari lightly fried and served with a side

Greenwood Winery & Bistro continued from pg 9 of marinara and cocktail sauce. The bonus in this dish is the lightly fried cherry peppers that are mixed alongside the perfectly cooked calamari! I would also note that the steamed clams were very popular at other tables and they looked scrumptious! We were then served a loaf of warm, baked bread with a fantastic crispy crust and olive oil dipping sauce. Fair warning, you will be tempted to fill up on bread but try to resist the temptation because your entrée will also be amazing! Kyle ordered Bistro Shrimp (six large shrimp sautéed in a garlic butter wine sauce and served over angel hair pasta) for his entrée. This dish was packed with flavor and he completely cleaned his plate! I ordered the Linguine with Clam Sauce (Fresh chopped baby clams, simmered in a garlic & white wine cream sauce topped with little neck clams). This dish was divine! The clams were cooked and seasoned absolutely perfectly. This may be the best linguine with clam sauce I’ve ever had (sorry mom!)! As smoke, ash, and chemicals relentlessly pour into the atmosphere, they are forced to formulate a plan based on hope and sacrifice, in an attempt to limit the fallout and save millions in the process. The mini-series is broken into five spectacular installments, and is easily one of the best productions in film and/or television this year. Though the story is a part of the not-so-distant past, it is based on a cataclysmic event that has somewhat faded from memory. While it was difficult to track and exact death toll that was directly attributed to the disaster —the Russian government officially stated there were only 31 deaths— whatever that number may be, it could have been infinitely higher. The majority of the characters in the series were based on real life individuals, and many of these men and women are to thank for limiting the damage as much as they did. Had men like Dyatlov continued to bury their heads in the radioactive sand, millions more could have been affected. The entire continent could have been affected. It’s staggering to imagine, and almost impossible to comprehend. RATED: TV-MA CHERNOBYL feels stunningly authentic in terms of visuals and storylines, and each and every performance is award worthy. And, though RUN TIME: 60-72 minute episodes there is no denying its brilliance, it’s not exactly an easy series to watch. Beyond the infuriating actions of those in charge, much of what unfolds on screen is absolutely horrifying. Presenting an extremely graphic and unflinching look at what happened to the first responders GENRE: Drama, History who did everything within their power to save their country, the images that unfold are impossible to forget. The sacrifice these men and STARRING: Jared Harris, Stellan women made in the face of limitless pain and agony is simply staggering. You see men who are literally dissolving before your eyes, and Skarsgård, Jessie Buckley you can feel their burning flesh from your seat at home. While watching, you know that one slip of the hand, or one tear in a glove could DIRECTORS: Johan Renck lead to an excruciating and slow death, but also realize that if these actions weren’t taken, this could have been a global catastrophe. One WRITERS: Craig Mazin instinctively thinks of wartime concessions and choices, and the bravery of a few that lead to the survival of many. Though these individuals were not facing a traditional foe with bullets, they were attacked by an invisible foe that was swift and merciless.

Fayette Street, Corner of Geddes Some years ago, Frank Mignacca went on a trip, visiting Belize and Guatemala. On that trip, he learned, as his bus tour stopped at the many roadside food trucks and shacks popular in Mexico and Central America, that “Mexican” food wasn’t quite what we Americans are used to. Among other things, until you have sampled the cuisine fresh, with local produce and un-processed, no-preservative meats and fish, you really haven’t tasted its rich, complex flavors. With 10 children —5 boys and 5 girls— heading for working age and a dream to open an eatery, his first thought, he said, was “Open a pizza place. 2007, we were ready to go.” The trip, and the food, changed his mind. “It was when I saw the way they made breakfast, Mexican style, with the fresh soft tacos, beans, eggs. I wanted to try that.” And his first restaurant turned out to be a taquiera, something along the lines of Central American fast food. “Mission style,” Mignacca explained, “is as close as we can come to the ‘real thing,’ since we can’t get the same fresh ingredients you’d find there. They call it ‘gringo food,’ but that’s in no way to suggest it isn’t delicious.” In fact, Mignacca has found, in his travels to Central and South America, that food is one of the things that most quickly and happily blends cultures, and introduces us to one another. “In Peru,” he told us,”there was a time when they were building railroads, and a lot of Chinese came over to work on the construction. They brought their cooking style with them, and now they have a kind of fried rice there, for example, that is how they would make fried rice at home, but using the ingredients they could get in Peru. It’s good – very good.” Mignacca’s goal, then, became to make the best Mexican dishes he could, using the ingredients found locally, and tailored to a Central New Yorker’s palette. In 2007 he opened his first taquiera at 3800 New Court Ave. Several years later he added a second

Seneca Turnpike, and then a food truck for events, and catering for private parties. “It’s all your favorites —tacos, burritos, quesadillas— for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And now with this third restaurant, we also have a cantina.” A cantina, he explained, serves all three meals but also serves adult beverages – so domestic and imported bottled beers, local drafts, and specialty drinks with a south-ofthe-border style will be featured at the cantina’s bar. Speaking of the bar, Mignacca indicated the metal-sided structure over at the side of the comfortably spacious room. He proudly showed us the bar top, a patterned surface continued on pg 15

Another class that is offered for anyone, at any level, is the “Brewer for a Day” class, which literally runs from 10am to 5pm. You’ll spend an entire day being hands-on with the brewers during one of their actual brewing days, gaining behind the scenes knowledge and experiencing every step in the brewing process along the way through hearing, smelling, seeing and tasting, from beginning to end. The cost for the day is $100 per person or $175 per couple and includes lunch, pints and/or flights, and a half-gallon of the finished beer product when it’s finished fermenting and ready for consumption. The Salt City Brew Club (SCBC) is “an organization of Home Brewers and beer aficionados in the general Syracuse area” who’s purpose is to “share ideas, recipes, techniques, and stories all in the effort of helping each member in brewing his or her own best beer.” Members typically meet each second Tuesday of the month at 7pm at IBU Brewing. Meetings are structured and have three parts consisting of a Lecture/Discussion, the Style of the Month, and a Tasting. Further detailed information about the meetings can be found on their website at www.saltcitybrew.org. SCBC membership information can also be located there as well. If you’re all-in on forging a career in the craft beer industry, you might want to pursue formal education in order to make that leap, and look no further than SUNY Morrisville, located nearby in Morrisville, NY. The college has a brand-spanking-new and still-evolving brewing curriculum and boasts a Brewing Institute program at the Copper Turret Restaurant & Brewhouse. This new Bachelor’s degree program concentrates in the areas of brewing science and technology, agricultural marketing, and food science. The curriculum includes 10 brewing courses, 4 practicum classes, several other courses involved in the brewing process and science of brewing and at the very end, students will pursue an internship for an entire semester at a brewery. Just last year, in 2018, SUNY Morrisville was named the Best Beer-Brewing College in North America at the U.S. Open College Beer Championship! During this event, SUNY Morrisville agricultural business development BBA students Mary Cosenza, of Colden, New York, and Josh Alley, of Liverpool, New York, earned a gold medal for their Bavarian German-Style Pilsner named “The Crop,” a silver medal for their Madison County Hopped IPA, “The Arsenal,” and a bronze for “Belgian Draft Horse,” a Belgian-style Tripel. SUNY Morrisville and their program directors pride themselves as an agricultural college by using 90-100% of malts and hops grown directly in Madison County, where the college is located, to produce these award-winning beers. Other semi-local colleges and universities that offer brewing and brewing-related degrees and certificates include: Schenectady County Community College, Niagara County Community College, Erie County Community College, SUNY Cobleskill, Hartwick College Center for Craft Food & Beverage, The Culinary Institute of America: Hyde Park, Cornell University, & Paul Smith’s College. The effect is striking, and fun. If you have ever visited the location in any of its previous incarnations, you’ll be surprised to find a completely renovated space that will offer take out or table service, and that is now a bright spot of color on the near west side. Your adventure will begin as soon as you park —a beautiful mural featuring faces, birds, and a tropical sky covers one wall, and a broad front deck will welcome you— and perhaps serve as summertime seating in months to come. “I went to Boston,” added Mignacca,” and saw Anna’s Taquiera. That was a real inspiration.” A staple of all Ponchito’s locations is take-out and delivery. “That was one of the things that made me think of a taquiera instead of a pizza place,” said Mignacca. “When you think of getting take-out or delivery, it’s pizza or Chinese. I thought, why not Mexican? So we made some tacos, three of them, put them in a delivery type styrofoam container, and waited a while, then tasted them to see if the flavor held up. And it was good, very good!” At this latest Ponchito’s, partly because you’ll be able to sit down and eat as well as take out, Mignacca plans to expand the menu beyond the menu to some specialty sandwiches and dishes. “We’ve got a sandwich we call El Chapo. It’s pork with grilled pineapple, jalapenos, sauteed spinach and grilled red onion, a special sauce. And we’ll have Cuban sandwiches, burgers, specials, other things I discovered when I traveled.” Not long ago, Mignacca held a hiring day, and made it a priority to hire from the neighborhood. A meet and greet will be held with the new staff shortly, and not long before this article goes to print, the town will welcome its newest restaurant with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. “From that point on, 7 of my kids will be working in the business, and my oldest son will be running this place. My plan is to relax and enjoy, and we hope you all will, too!”

Love and Power From 2005 until 2009, in the village of Manitoba, Bolivia, a group of Mennonite men raped and sexually abused at least 130 Mennonite girls and women within their tightknit religious community. Among the reasons the assaults continued for so long is that the girls and women being assaulted didn’t know they were being assaulted while they were being assaulted. The rapists anesthetized the girls and women, aged 3 to 60, with a belladonna spray normally used to sedate livestock. When the victims could no longer ignore the evidence of sex, church leaders attributed the women’s suspicions to overactive imaginations, demonic attacks and ghost sex. Mythology, world religion and anthropology suggest that when confronted with human behavior and natural phenomena people can’t or don’t want to explain, people blame evil spirits, demons, and people from other cultures for causing trouble in the neighborhood. Heroic war stories grab more attention than lectures about public policy. Love’s passion plays better than love’s patience. Truth can be more disturbing than fiction and fictional tales generally end with some resolution a reader or viewer can perceive at a distance from themselves. Fictional characters reveal their characters and sometimes ours. I did not watch Game of Thrones until this season; still, what I saw resonated with my

thoughts about myth, history and interpersonal dynamics. In what I did see, I heard characters theorize that duty is the end of love, and love is the end of duty. Protagonists argued the risks and benefits of gaining power through instilling love or fear in their followers. And, spoiler alert here, after the final battle between Cersei Lannister and Danaerys Targaryen for the Iron Throne, and after the intrafamilial love/duty conflict between Danaerys and Jon Snow, it was Danaerys’ fire-breathing dragon, Drogon, who, left to its own instincts, and with autonomy, did the absolutely best thing. Many religions teach that we are supposed to love and forgive. Game of Thrones seems to ask, is dutiful love really love? And, when forgiveness is Belladonna compelled, is forgiveness really forgiveness? Like the writers of Game of Thrones, writer Miriam Toews delves into these questions and other questions concerning power in her novel Women Talking. Women Talking is fictional imagining of what might occur if illiterate Mennonite rape victims, born into a religion that requires that they obey and forgive, decided to demand a safer and better life for themselves and their children in their village or else start anew elsewhere. Women Talking maps the evolving autonomous consciousness of women, some of whom wonder if they themselves are not simply livestock, in a cult-like society nestled in present day South America. The women meet in secret in a hay loft to avoid the attention of their rule following

religious community. Because the women can’t read or write, the women enlist the help of a once shunned Mennonite male to take notes for the record. The note-taker, August, teaches young men in the community to read and write so they can conduct business in the outside world. August has his own story, a story which looms large in the village’s power dynamics. Ona’s story also looms large. Ona is pregnant by a rapist, suffers from morning sickness during the meetings, clearly anticipates that her child, once born, will be taken from her likely to be raised by the father’s family, and still believes love is the answer. Because Ona is unmarried and pregnant, one of Miriam Toews author of Women Talking the married rape victims denounces Ona as a “whore.” In their effort to achieve consensus, the women organize their options under pictorial headings symbolizing three possibilities. A picture of a horizon symbolizes staying and doing nothing; a woman and man facing each other with knives means “fight,” and the rear end of a horse symbolizes leaving. August sees that a horizon can also symbolize moving toward change and that the rear end of a horse could symbolize watching someone else leave. August feels conflicted about interjecting his thoughts and experience; the women disagree about whether they should trust his input. What the women ultimately decide to do reflects the sort of quick efficiency demonstrated by some characters in the series finale of Game of Thrones. The times, ideology and gender politics of Game of Thrones and Women Talking differ greatly. The politics of individual people within individual families within individual communities all over the map, despite our connectedness, seems to differ greatly. The end games of Game of Thrones and Women Talking both suggest that while individual stories end, the interrelated love and power struggles continue to unfold. Nothing is resolved once and for all happily ever after. We keep talking.

The conceit of the book is that the life lessons Randall Wallace offers us are all drawn from his insights (real or imagined) into William Wallace – with whom he shares a surname, if not a traceable kinship. Before the film project is even a twinkle in Mel Gibson’s eye, Randall travels to Scotland where he quickly learns that Wallace is considered by many as one of the greatest, if not the greatest legendary hero of the nation. He also notes that Wallace and Robert the Bruce —first and much revered King of the Scots— appeared to have lived at the same time. The story also goes that The Bruce betrayed Wallace, yet he goes on to become a great king. Was there something, he wonders, about Wallace that inspired transformation? How do we become better people, he asks, and what, who, can bring out the best in us? This “best” is what Wallace calls “the Braveheart life.” In Randall Wallace’s telling of it, William’s story begins with a father who dies when William is just a boy. It’s difficult to watch a film like Braveheart, hear a speech like that, and not be at least a bit thrilled. And while, as most readers of my book reviews will know, my first choice genre isn’t self-help, it was definitely intriguing to be given a book written by the man who wrote those stirring words, and who now undertook to write a book on living a better, nobler, more courageous life. I tend to read such books with a bit of dismissal: oh yeah? Show me how well you lived your life before telling me how I should live mine! And the writer doesn’t shy away from admitting that his own life, while in some ways enchanted (he got to write Braveheart, didn’t he?) was in most other ways ordinary (a small town Tennessee boy with a divorce in his future) and full of the heartaches we generally experience. But if you examine some of the rest of his oeuvre: We Were Soldiers, Pearl Harbor, Secretariat and Heaven is for Real, you’ll see a couple of themes running through them – heroes, faith, spirit and inspiration. Have you looked at the ingredients in your toothpaste … your shampoo … or your skin care products? Since I am a Neanderthal I don’t use skin care products but I do use toothpaste and until recently have used deodorant. I say “until recently” because I have stopped with the deodorant several months ago and no one seems to have noticed. I had thought my wife might notice but even she has not commented. That says something about the state of my hygiene or the state of my marriage. I do shower at least once a day so that helps. My staff would probably tell me if I were stinking up the office and they have not said anything either. Why have I given up on rubbing or spraying my armpits? After all 95% of the population uses deodorants and it’s an 18 billion dollar a year industry. I worry about the chemicals. I worry about the Aluminum. Even if it doesn’t cause Dementia it does build up in your body and is difficult to eliminate and can affect your bones and kidneys. Living the Braveheart Life continued from pg 23 each of us is what Randall Wallace calls The Moment, or the Calling. The time when we figure out what it is we were meant to do, to be. It may be great, it may be humble, it may be something we would never have expected. Sometimes, he adds, it is our friends —our brothers and sisters— who help us reach our understanding of who we are and what we are meant to do, to be, to become. They may come to us as literal brothers and sisters, or as companions for a time, but whomever they are – they are there for us, and we are there for them. If you saw the film, you know that William Wallace had several friends of different kinds, each helped shape him into the man he needed to be, and he in turn, helped them along their path. Friends, then, are another essential part of living the Braveheart life. Much of what Randall Wallace offers isn’t new, precisely, but because he has embodied it in the study of an historic, and heroic, figure, it is easier to actually see the challenges, the risks, the virtues, playing out. So honor, self-knowledge, failure and recovery, faithfulness, purpose, even humor – these things have been displayed for us many times and in many ways as qualities and experiences we should seek to live our lives to the fullest. But it never hurts to revisit them from time to time – and this time, with a Scottish accent.

Currently, he serves as a member of the NDAA Executive Committee. New York State Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman appointed D.A. Fitzpatrick in 2010 to the New York State Permanent Sentencing Commission. The Commission’s task is to examine New York State’s sentencing laws and policies on an ongoing basis and make the appropriate recommendations. The DA is also a member of the Onondaga County and New York State Bar Associations and he has been a member of the National District Attorney’s Association since 1984. “He is currently the Association’s Chair of the Committee on Fair & Ethical Administration of Justice”. Be Successful at Eating Healthy One of the biggest issues people have with food – is how they look at it. For years, my clients have told me how difficult it is to eat healthy. Now I always try to be compassionate when having these conversations, but I just don’t agree. Nowadays if you want to eat healthy, it’s really not that hard! The quote “abs are made in the kitchen – not in the gym” fits perfectly into this paragraph. We know that most Americans have a weight problem because of a bad diet, and as a result a lot of health issues. It seems like everywhere we look someone we know is struggling with their weight. Obesity continues to be an epidemic as we are seeing a steady increase in heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and other health related disorders. The truth is, most of us could stand to lose a few pounds. So how do we learn to look at food differently? How do we learn to make better food choices? Here are a few tips to get you started.

The decision to eat healthier must involve the whole family. That means that you, as a parent, have to commit to new eating habits as well. A recent study found that children whose parents weighed more and had a higher body mass index (BMI), weighed more and were more likely to have a higher BMI themselves. Healthy eating doesn’t have to be boring! The trick is to make it fun, diverse and age appropriate. There are so many healthy recipes out there that taste good! Choose recipes that the whole family can participate in making. It’s a great way to spend time with the kids and familiarize them with the kitchen!

Use Smaller Plates
Plates seem to get bigger and bigger! If the plate is smaller, you can finish everything on there without feeling guilty. You can also avoid taking in too many calories.
Out of Sight, Out of Mind
Keep all junk food out of sight. If you don’t see it you won’t be tempted to eat it! Better yet just don’t bring it into the house! Keep healthy food like a bowl of fresh fruit, sliced veggies, or a dish of unsalted nuts in the kitchen at all times. You will be amazed at how much this helps you cut down on the amount of junk food you eat. Food prep and quick easy meals is key to your success. Prep your food weekly and be diligent about making meals easily assessable. Here are a few ideas:

Droning On About a year ago, this column featured a story about the NYS Fair Drone Film Festival, a relatively new undertaking that aims to bring the wonders of drone filming and films about what drones can do to New York State via the NYS Fair as its showcase. The field of drone technology has nowhere to go but – up, of course! Central New York is a hub of drone activity, largely due to a state program that designated a 50-mile corridor between Syracuse and Griffiss International Airport in Rome, NY, the “Drone Corridor.” Within this corridor, strategic investments will accelerate industry growth by supporting emerging uses of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) in key industries, including agriculture and forest management,

transportation and logistics, media and film development, utilities and infrastructure, and public safety. The area was already populated with technology firms that were poised to fly: Raytheon, SRC/ Gryphon Sensors being two you’ll no doubt recognize, but new industries and ventures are taking off all the time. NUAIR, The Northeast UAS Airspace Integration Research Alliance, along with 200+ partners, works to advance unmanned aircraft systems research and to accelerate UAS industry economic development in the region. SkyOp, in Canandaigua, NY, offers comprehensive courses in everything from the basics of drones to certifying and licensing pilots, and is continuing adding to its extensive course list. Start-up organizations, with seed money from GENIUS NY, is the world’s largest business accelerator for unmanned systems. GENIUS NY awards five drone startups a total of $3 million in investments, and has been instrumental in bringing multiple high-tech, drone-centered organizations to the CNY region. When we think of “drones,” it used to be a word quickly followed by “strikes.” As with so many technology developments, it did spring from the idea of controlling combat from a distance. The whole concept of a drone is a flight instrument that is “unmanned,” but not “unpiloted.” The pilot controls the device from afar, using video and GPS (and now tethered controls in some cases) to

maneuver the drone up, down, sideways, hovering, flying slow or astoundingly fast. New innovations are adding to the drones’ carrying capacity, flight time, and programming at such a rapid pace that even if you follow the industry it’s difficult to stay current. Drone “swarms” are comprised of tiny drones programmed to fly almost like a “murmuration,” a flock of birds that fly in what appears to be an orchestrated dance. In the case of the drones, it is orchestrated, each drone communicating with the others as well as the programming controlling their pattern and objectives. What’s most exciting about drones is that, as with many advances first conceived of for combat advantage, smart people quickly saw the ways in which the technology could be put to good purpose – and soon drones were being used to pollinate fruit groves when bees didn’t show up; to find people lost in the woods, or trapped inside a burning continued on pg 42

In a large bowl add the oat flour, rolled oats, sea salt and ground flax. 4. Top with peanut butter and maple syrup. 5. The batter should be slightly sticky, but not wet. Add water as needed to get the right consistency. 6. Add in chocolate chips. (optional) 7. Spread out batter in baking pan using wet hands. Pack in tightly and ensure top is flat. 8. Bake for 18-20 mins or until edges are slightly brown. 9. Let sit for 20 minutes before removing from pan and cutting into 12 bars. 10. Besides the antimicrobial chemicals most deodorants contain parabens (listed under the names butylparaben, ethylparaben, isobutylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben). Parabens are a known endocrine disruptor and can produce adverse developmental, reproductive, neurological, and immune effects. There MIGHT also be a relationship between underarm deodorants containing aluminum and breast cancer. As reported in the Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry November 2013 in an article entitled “Aluminium, carbonyls and cytokines in human nipple aspirate fluids: Possible relationship between inflammation, oxidative stress and breast cancer microenvironment.” There is an alarming increase in aluminum in breast tissues in women with breast cancer. So maybe think twice before dousing yourself with more chemicals and affecting your skin biome in a negative way. 1/4 cup distilled white vinegar 1/3 cup vegetable oil 1/3 cup soy sauce 1 lime, juiced 1/2 lemon, juiced 1/4 cup sherry 2 tablespoons ground mustard 2 teaspoons honey

4 cloves garlic, crushed 1/3 cup brown sugar 2 tablespoons lemon pepper 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon rosemary 1 teaspoon salt 6 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves

In a large glass bowl, stir together the vinegar, oil, soy sauce, lime juice, lemon juice, sherry, mustard, and honey. Mix in the garlic, brown sugar, lemon pepper, oregano, rosemary, and salt. Place the chicken in the mixture. Cover, and marinate in the refrigerator 8 hours or overnight. Preheat the grill for high heat. Lightly oil the grill grate. Discard marinade, and place chicken on the grill. Cook 6 to 8 minutes per side, until juices run clear.

The NYS Drone Film Festival, which will be taking place this summer at the New York State Fair on August 25th, each year recognizes top filmmakers in 8 categories, plus a “Best in Show” award —and yes, there is a category for students, so don’t let age or lack of experience deter you!— with medals and a showing of their prize-winning film. Most categories require the majority of the short film to be shot using a drone, but one category is reserved for films about drones – the ways in which drones are being used throughout the world and in so many ways to save money, time, and even lives.
