Avengers: Endgame For the past 17 years, I’ve been lucky enough to provide movie reviews for both “Table Hopping” and NewsChannel 9. It’s fair to say, in that time, I have seen hundreds of movies in the theater, and though I relish an opportunity I get to watch a film, there’s something special about being there for opening night of an “event” film. The energy and excitement are palpable, and everyone is planted firmly on the edge of their seat. Whether it be STAR WARS, LORD OF THE RINGS, THE AVENGERS, or anything in-between, there is a passionate fanbase for virtually every major franchise, and when there’s a new installment, everyone wants to take in the spectacle before it’s spoiled by someone else. Having said all of that, I can categorically proclaim that, in the near two decades I have been covering films, I have never seen or experienced anything like the premiere of AVENGERS: ENDGAME. Amongst the capacity crowd at Regal Cinemas in Destiny USA, there were laughs, there were tears, and most of all, there were constant, resounding cheers. With a project that was this secretive, and the fact that it was 21 films in the making, it felt as if, for those three hours, we were all having a shared experience that transcended your typical night out at the movies. For me, it perfectly encapsulated why I love this medium. For that brief moment in time, it didn’t matter what was happening in the lives of anyone in the theater. Their hearts and minds were locked in to what was
unfolding on the screen, and for me, it truly illustrated how popular and beloved many of these characters have become. As spectacular as that experience or was, make no mistake, whether you are in a theater with 300 people or you are sitting there all by yourself, AVENGERS: ENDGAME was everything you could have possibly hoped it would be. Serving as a satisfying, emotional conclusion to this phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it did the impossible; it lived up to the hype. By the time you read this review, chances are, you’ve either seen the film, or have stumbled across a spoiler or two. If not, rest assured, I’m not going to give away much. ENDGAME begins shortly after the catastrophic events of INFINITY WAR. Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) is aboard a lifeless spacecraft millions of miles from home. His only companion is Nebula (Karen Gillan) and his oxygen is running perilously low. Meanwhile, back on Earth, the remaining Avengers attempt to come to grips with what happened. Consumed by feelings of grief, loss, and failure, Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlet Johansson), Captain America (Chris Evans), War Machine (Don Cheadle), Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), and Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) must come to grips with the fact that they were beaten, and millions died as a result. Endgame, much like INFINITY WAR, is devastatingly heavy. Highlighted by emotional complexities and plenty of soul-searching, it is far from the whimsical adventures of SPIDER-MAN and THE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. Considering that the last installment in the AVENGERS franchise revolved around genocide, this really shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Despite these morose undertones, the film is bursting with all of the best

elements that has the MCU so endearing. These elements come in many different forms, including a number of twists, some beautiful set pieces, plenty of laughs, and spectacular special effects. Most importantly, AVENGERS has a cast that has grown into a family, and this love and dedication to one another (and the universe that they have created) is plainly visible. Featuring a number of moments that are as memorable now as they were when their individual films were originally released, ENGAME is both nostalgic and refreshing, with directors Anthony and Joe Russo fusing past, present, and future with exciting and highly entertaining results. On paper, the three hour running time may seem daunting, but for those who have watched all 21 films in the MCU, I find it unlikely that you’ll be glancing at your phone (seriously, please don’t do that) or checking your watch very often. Despite its length, there are no “throw away” moments, and the pace was exactly where it needed to be. For a franchise that is this dense, with so many characters and concurrent plotlines, it makes sense that it would take this much time to wrap it all up. Yes, there is plenty of action, particularly in the final act, but there is also character progression and resolution, which is, for me, even more important than the blasting and the bashing. That’s not to say that the climactic battle isn’t a wonder to behold. RATED: PG-13 Because make no mistake, it absolutely is. As thrilling, intense, and rousing as any sequence RUN TIME: 3h 2min we’ve seen in the MCU, it certainly serves as a worthy payoff for a decade’s worth of waiting. GENRE: Fantasy/Sci-fi I give the Russo brothers credit, because this battle, and ENDGAME as a whole, serves as an Robert Downey, STARRING: adequate final chapter in this revolutionary collection of films. I’m sure there will be a select few Jr., Karen Gillan, Chris Hemsworth, who will watch ENDGAME and find logistical failings in terms of science and storytelling. I’d like Scarlet Johansson, Chris Evans, Don to think, however, that most will embrace it, much like the sold-out crowd I had the pleasure Cheadle, Mark Ruffalo, Bradley Cooper of sitting with. It was to stand as a culmination of 21 films, and a launching pad for what is to DIRECTORs: Anthony Russo, come. In this manner, ENDGAME succeeds spectacularly, and will stand for years to come as Joe Russo blockbuster filmmaking at its finest. Writers: Stephen McFeely, AVENGERS: ENDGAME- A

Ingersoll & Company Thinker, Writer, Musican I had a tough day a few weeks ago. It came at the end of a tough week. I had “had it.” Jeannie, my girlfriend knew it as soon as I came through the door. “C’mon, I’m taking you to dinner,” she said, as she planted the welcome home smooch. “Ok.” I replied, thinking about how my state of upset was showing more than I wanted it to. I don’t want to bring it home, after all. “I’m taking you to this place called ‘Eskapes.’ I went there with the girls for dinner a while back. I think you’ll really like this place,” she continued. “Ok. Yeah.” Next thing you know, we’re hauling up to Cicero to check out the joint while I try to change channels. I loved the place upon entry. Warm and cozy-cool environment with a band setting up in the corner. We got the table closest to the band. I always feel comfortable near the band. I don’t remember what Jean ordered, mainly because I was captivated with what I ordered … chicken encrusted with a home made potato chip crust. Different and outstanding! I had never seen any of the guys in the band before, but I could tell they’re seasoned in

Ingersoll & Company the way they set up. I anticipated their start. Then they started. Now, one of the best experiences one could partake in when it comes to music is the experience of discovery. As a musician, one makes discoveries in the music itself. As a fan one makes discoveries in the artists as they encounter them. And discovering Ingersoll & Company was, most certainly, a worthwhile discovery. The band played original music and covered music. Folk and roots and jazzish music that had one foot in the past and one foot in the future. Very interesting selections, none of them obvious. I love irreverent choices. But, what really got me was when Jeff Ingersoll —the head honcho of the group— started citing authors as inspiration for a few of his songs. At this point my attention became extremely acute as I became aware of the level of this writer’s writing. Not only can he write – he and his band can play. They played their asses off. I loved the group. When they took a break, I waved Jeff over to say “hello,” and meet. I told him what I wanted to do here, and he furnished a CD and contact information. His CD is great. After listening to the CD, I found him again and started this interview. Ladies and gentlemen: Please meet Mr. Jeff Ingersoll. Chuck Schiele: Hi Jeff. Thank you for doing this interview. Jeff Ingersoll: Thanks, Chuck. My pleasure. Thank you for having us. CS: How did you get started in music and how long have you been playing? JI: I grew up playing with my Grandparents and all my family on my father’s side. Whenever the family would get together for a holiday or reunion it would turn into a big jam session. I wanted to participate so I got Dad to show me the three big cowboy chords on guitar and kind of took it upon myself from there. I was around ten, so I guess I’ve been playing some 23 years. CS: What inspires you? Who inspires you?

JI: My music is usually based on an emotion I’m trying to convey. That usually comes from the space I put myself in, physically or spiritually. I really like the literary arts, poetry and philosophical thinkers and writers. On my last album, for example, I discovered Pablo Neruda, and his number 20 from Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair, perfectly described every bit of emotion I was feeling at that time. CS: Yeah! I saw you play that the other night. Loved it. I was also happy to see someone make a Pablo Neruda reference around here … one of my favorite writers. JI: That in turn helped me to materialize that same emotion into my own medium: acoustic music. As far as other musicians go, my early influences were people like Tony Rice, David Grier, Matt Flinner - bluegrass guys. As I matured my musical tastes became more diverse. I listen to a lot of modern jazz: Coltrane, Monk, Jim Hall, etc. I like blues: Freddie King, T-Bone Walker, Stevie Ray Vaughn. I listen to a fair bit of Django Reinhardt and Bob Wills. I still like classic country and serious singer song-writers like John Prine continued on pg 8

The Write Stuff by Nancy Roberts
Treading The Uneven Road Stories by L.M. Brown I grew up in an Irish Catholic neighborhood. Our house, and our family, rode the gap between the very Irish parish of St. Mark’s, and the parishes and ethnic groups to the north and east. Though we shared some cultural heritage, the mix of Irish-ScotsGerman in our background made us something of visitors to the “real” Irish families that spilled out of the homes closer to the church: the many children, the statues of the Virgin and the portrait of the Sacred Heart that adorned every room, the laughing (though occasionally morose) father who always seemed to have a beer in hand after work, and the organized-but-

harried mother who kept a hand on the tiller and an eye on every child, and the names Maureen, Cathleen, Brian and Brendan recurring in family after family. Later, reading Irish literature and learning a bit about Irish myth and legends, I learned that, like most cultures, the Irish have a way of expressing themselves —the words, images, turns of phrase— and a fondness for subjects, that seem to season much of Irish writing. I found it all, the life and the literature, enchanting, a little mysterious, yet for all the magic ultimately very earthy (though that isn’t quite the word – there probably is one in Gaelic!). That is how I would describe this volume of short stories by L. M. Brown. There are elements of the stories that are quintessentially Irish as I remembered Irish to be: the images of the saints, the tangle of family, the influence of alcohol, the weight of mother and the uncertainty of father. And there are elements that are certainly the writer’s own – imaginative and slightly hard to grasp. The stories are loosely connected in that they all take place in a town in Ireland that progress has left behind, and the attempts at those remaining to make sense of where to go, what to do, and how to cope. The first story, for example – “The Lady on the Bridge.” In the first sentence we know a great deal in a very few words: “Bernadette noticed the address book on her way out of the bedroom on the floor amid her husband’s crumpled clothes.” The rest of the very short story is all about communication, and the lack of communication, things said and unsaid, the damage done by families and to families, and the possibility of redemption always hinted at, represented in a statue weeping with rain. If the first story is a study of a husband and wife that ends enigmatically, the second is an intricately knitted tale of two brothers who reverse place again and again over

time. Who is the leader, who the protector, who the strong and which the weak? And no, I didn’t see the end coming, though Our Lady stands guard over this story, as she did the first. Some of the stories have you paging back and forth to understand – Brown doesn’t hand her tales to you filleted and explained. You have to pick for the bones, and enjoy the imagery, the “flutter of clothes” as people enter a room, the sight of a bowed balding head seen from above, the shift of focus from one set of eyes to another without warning or even a clear indication that we are now viewing the scene from the other side of the room. Throughout the stories there are hints at the locale, the council houses and narrow streets, the pub at the corner, the genteel shabbiness of a kitchen, and the ever-present icons of faith that watch from sightless eyes. Just published and available for purchase at Amazon, the collection was, for me, a perfect St. Patrick’s Day treat.

Ingersoll & Company continued from pg 5 and Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan, etc. There’s really no rhyme or reason to what I listen to. As long as I feel it’s good art I’ll listen to it. CS: Brief history of your music path. JI: I started out young with my family playing old time and classic country. Of course, in high school I was in various pretty bad rock bands. At some point someone asked my family to play at a church function and after that we performed around CNY as The Ingersoll Family Band. We played churches, retirement homes and places like that. It wasn’t until a few years after high school that I started to get a little more serious about music as a vocation. I started “The New North Country Troubadours” with my younger brother Aaron. And after the band members moved away and the band sort of fizzled out I decided to move to Tennessee to attend ETSU for a bachelor of arts in bluegrass, old time, and country music. My time there exposed me to the very best in that genre. I played in probably a hundred different bands sharing the stage with people like Ricky Skaggs, Adam Steffey, Bobby Hicks, Aaron Ramsey. It was a really musically rich environment. It was during this time that I recorded my first album. CS: Your thoughts on the CNY scene. JI: I’m really excited about where the CNY scene is headed. With new breweries popping up everywhere and marijuana opening up for recreational use, we’re seeing a renaissance similar to Boulder Co. or Asheville NC. People are thinking more about what they are taking into their bodies, and that includes music. Instead of reaching for that bud light, maybe they’ll go for something a bit more complex in the flavor category – something that is locally produced and therefore is community strengthening. Similarly, instead of listening to a guy sit on a stool and strum guitar and sing top 40 radio hits, maybe they’ll be willing to give some original acoustic music a chance. CS: Please share a few career highlights. JI: I guess completing my first album, Peering Through the Bars, is probably the biggest thing I’ve done musically. Writing the material, arranging it, finding the musicians, producing, mixing it down … it turned out to be a huge bit of work but I’m really happy with how it came out. KENTUCKY DERBY MAY 4TH CS: I enjoyed your album, very much. How about funny stuff. Got any funny stories? ADVANCED BETTING STARTS JI: I played a gig with a friend and really great fiddler, Meade Richter, in Downtown Boone NC at the Jones House. Meade was only THE FRIDAY BEFORE! stateside for a couple of weeks so we decided to make a weekend out of it. We were OPEN 6 DAYS A WEEK ≈ MONDAY-SATURDAY hanging out downtown and decided to call PREAKNESS MAY 18TH a friend in search of recreational materials. CS: What instrument(s) do you play? JI: I’ll play whatever I’m hired to play, even if it means having to give myself a crash course in hurdy-gurdy to get that Kobzar gig. I’m mostly a guitar player but do gig fairly regularly on bass, mandolin or dobro. CS: Who are your bandmates? With whom do you play? JI: Right now I’ve got a trio together and we go by Ingersoll and Company. It consists of myself, my brother Aaron Ingersoll on mandolin, and Jameson Dunham on upright bass. I feel really comfortable with this configuration. We’re all pretty versatile, but also have similar tastes which makes the music groove really well, and also interesting for the audience. In addition to being accomplished musicians, they’re also really good guys and we get along together really well, and that helps a lot. I’m always down to sit in as well- the bulk of my work in TN was as a “hired gun” type musician and I’m looking to open up those channels here as well. CS: Anything I’m not asking that is relevant to your story? I’d love to hear it. Please state the question and answer it. JI: I did want to mention that I have lived in a 16’ yurt for three years now, and as of last year am completely off-grid. I actually do a youtube video series called “Tunes in a Yurt” where I get various musician friends to come hang out for a few hours and record a song. CS: Advice for budding musicians? JI: Always be happy with what you can already do, and realize that nothing is out of reach for you to learn. Any kind of lick or song you want to perform is just a matter of time and energy dedicated toward learning it. It’s important, however, not to go too far down that rabbit hole of wwself-improvement that you forget what you’ve already accomplished is pretty great. CS: Best way to keep in touch with you and your music? JI: Facebook is definitely the best way to keep up with where and when I’m playing. Kyle and I went to the Blue Spruce Lounge on a sunny spring evening. We were immediately seated in a cozy booth and greeted by our friendly and knowledgeable server, Ashley. Everything on the menu looked great so we decided to start with some appetizers. We were thinking about the Philly Quesadilla (flour tortilla stuffed with shaved steak peppers, onions, jalapenos and cheddar jack) or the Chicken Wing Dip (a spicy mixture of buffalo sauce, pulled chicken, and diced celery served with hand cut pita chips) but we ultimately decided on the Poutine, a delicious dish of hand cut fries, smothered in a savory beef gravy and melted cheese curds, along with the Shrimp dippers, (shrimp lightly battered in IPA beer batter and tossed in a medium sauce). Both appetizers were absolutely wonderful! There were so many dishes that sounded like great entrees like the

Ultimately we both decided on a delicious shrimp dish! I had the Shrimp Riggies (A Utica New York Favorite. Rigatoni cooked in a spicy pink sauce with garlic, peppers, and perfectly cooked shrimp on top) This dish was fresh and delicious and the shrimp were tender and perfect. Kyle decided on the Shrimp Scampi (Jumbo shrimp lightly sautéed in a lemon white wine garlic sauce over pasta). The few bites that he let me steal before he devoured everything but the plate were scrumptious! Let the Blue Spruce Lounge host your upcoming event! Much of season two has focused on the catalyst of Barry’s homicidal tendencies, and his inability to cope with these feelings of despair and fury. More than anything, he longs to be a decent person with genuine human connections, but finds himself engulfed in the circumstances that prohibit his personal growth. Every episode of BARRY has moments of laugh-out-loud hilarity, and then suddenly diverges towards poignant, thought-provoking drama that examines the very nature of evil and humanity. This, for me, is what sets the series apart from virtually every single one of its peers. While there are countless series both current and past that blend comedy and drama, it’s difficult to think of another that has so expertly and convincingly melded the two. But don’t worry- if you didn’t get your garden fix with this event, we have another event on June 1st and 2nd called Sips & Succulents. On Thursday evenings, Six Mile Creek also offers live music with their libations. Once June hits us, live music will be in full force. RJ Graham Golf Management Tanner Valley Orchard Vali Caughdenoy Links Apple Creek Skyline Lodge at Highland Forest www.rjgrahamgolf.com Golf. It’s a sport so deep in our culture that it’s a warm weather ritual, it has a nationally recognized “day” (May 1), it’s the source of humor, arguments, bets, massive tournaments, friendly rivalries, and days spent checking the weather to be assured of a good weekend’s outing. Its history dates back to the late 1400s, when Scots (all Robin Williams’ hysterically funny descriptions aside) really did gather on the east coast of Scotland near Fife to hit a pebble with a stick around a “course” consisting of sand dunes, rabbit runs, and deer tracks. Here in Central New York, where winters are long and fierce, golfers are all the more excited as the days lengthen and “the season” approaches. They can at last begin to look forward to a quick nine holes after work, or a long leisurely afternoon on the weekend enjoying the scenery as well as the sport. And RJ Graham has made it his mission The gazebo at Orchard Vali to see to it that your day on the links is
Orchard Vali green everything you hoped it would be – and that there will be a course within an easy drive for everyone in the area. With four courses now under his management, Graham has his hands full. But, as he says, “I’ve been around golf my whole life. I went to school for Turf management after high school and then my father and I built Apple Creek. A few years later I went to school for Professional Golf Management, and taught at a high end golf academy in Hilton Head. I knew when we decided to move back to New York that I wanted to buy my own course and try things my way.” After a time away, Graham returned to the Central New York area and put together a plan to buy Tanner Valley. No sooner had he sealed that deal Tanner Valley

RJ Graham Golf Management continued from pg 15 when Orchard Valley became available and he started working on purchasing that, and then shortly after that, Caughdenoy Links. Readying himself for that challenge, he learned that his father was ready to retire – and that added Apple Creek to the foursome. Of course, owning and operating a golf course is more than making sure the course is well architected and maintained. Golfers will argue the merits of this course over that, and expect that the greens will be manicured and the course will offer a parklike setting. But a good golf club will also offer food and beverages to be enjoyed before or after the round – or both! “One advantage of the four courses is each one offers something unique,” says Graham. “And because our locations are beautiful and can accommodate groups, our banquet and catering businesses are big, as well.” We’ll begin our tour in Lafayette, at Orchard Vali. that accommodates 80. The Vali Room, which can serve 100 people, can be combined with the Main Banquet room for that really large gathering or wedding. And for an unforgettable event —and a truly spectacular view— Orchard Vali is the proud exclusive caterer for the Skyline Lodge at Highland Forest with spaces for 60 to 160 people. Now, let’s head back up to Syracuse where you’ll find a golf staple of the area since the 60s, Tanner Valley. A par 72, this parkland-style course offers a newly updated Tavern, which has made Tanner Valley a popular destination for food and drinks as well as golf – and you can enjoy it year-round. A short ride north will bring you to Caughdenoy Links in Central Square, offering 6,204 yards of par 72 golf. Set in the quiet country, this challenging layout uses the hills, ponds, and creeks nature provided to present golfers with beautiful views as well as interesting holes. After your round, a fullTanner Valley service bar and restaurant will keep you fueled – or promise a reward after you play. Finally, we’ll finish our tour where it all started – in DeRuyter at Apple Creek. This father-son designed course was the beginning, and it remains a lovely 9-hole course in a classic Central New York setting. And locals enjoy the restaurant, The 19th Hole, for a quick weekend drink and dinner, too. “But we have plans to expand that course, as well,” Graham explains. “The idea is to make great golfing and great food available all across the area at affordable prices.” “I have a really good team,” explains Graham, when asked how he can keep all these balls in the air. “Each person is really expert at what they do, and I can count on them – that lets me do my job of managing and growing the business.” Graham’s overall philosophy is to give you the best at a reasonable price. Whether you’re a visitor, or a member, his objective is to make sure you’ve had an enjoyable time. While courses, and restaurants, are open to the public, memberships are offered that give privileges at all four courses. Your membership will get you tee time priority, discounts on lessons, pro shop hard goods, glove and balls as well as apparel; access to member only events, and reciprocals. And the organization also holds tournaments, both public and Overlooking Beautiful Otisco Lake private, across all four courses. So what are you waiting for? Spring has finally arrived —the forsythia has bloomed— and it’s time to get out and play golf!

Preventive Medicine by Dr. Barry
Sunscreens Well it’s finally getting warmer in Central New York and that means thousands of parents will be slathering their young wards with sunscreen ...do they make SPF 1,000? Because I know if they did there would be plenty of mothers who would use it. Anything to protect the kinder. Except, what if the sunscreen you are using may actually hurt the kids? As Dr Mercola points out “Despite the availability of sunscreen products and media coverage about using sun protection, the number of people suffering from malignant melanoma of the skin continues to rise each year. The number of new cases of skin cancer per 100,000 people has risen from 7.9 in 1975 to 24 people in 2013. “ I can hear you now..well ..that’s because we are still not using enough sunscreen. Apply it more often and use a higher SPF say the sun-deniers. Well the science says otherwise. “According to a 2006 US Environmental Protection Agency publication, “there is no evidence that sunscreens protect you from malignant melanoma.”A number of studies suggest that the use of sunscreen either does not significantly decrease the risk or may actually increase the risk of melanoma.Other studies indicate that sunscreen users, when compared with non users, may actually be more likely to develop sunburns, thereby possibly increasing their risk of melanoma. These studies, as well as the continued increase in rates of melanoma, call into question whether our current advice regarding sunscreen use is truly beneficial in preventing melanoma or if it may actually be detrimental in the fight against melanoma.” As reviewed in 2011 in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine … “Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a known carcinogen. Both UVA and UVB radiation is emitted by the sun, but because UVB was thought to be the primary causative agent of all skin cancers by direct damage to DNA, initial sunscreens were developed that blocked UVB with little or no protective effects against UVA. The sun protection factor (SPF) label on sunscreen relates to protection against UVB radiation and is not at all related to UVA radiation protection. Recent studies suggest that UVA radiation Call ahead plays a role in the development of for melanoma, not necessarily through Take-Out direct DNA damage but through oxidative stress, free radical generation, and the degradation of vitamin D. Sunscreens that contain benzoRt. 11 LaFayette • 315.677.3986 phenones (such as oxybenzone and avobenzone (Parsol Homemade Luncheon Specials Daily sulisobenzone), 1789), ecamsule (Mexoryl, La RocheFridays - Full Dinner Menu Posay, France), titanium dioxide, or zinc oxide may provide some UVA ◆ Haddock ◆ Prime Rib ◆ protection. However, in one in vitro analysis of sunscreen ingredients ◆ Steak ◆ Seafood ◆ used to block UVA, the most effecAn assortment of nightly dinner specials! tive filter, titanium dioxide, blocked only 25% of UVA radiation.Though a number of studies show that the use of sunscreen can reduce the risk
of squamous cell carcinoma, sunscreen use was found to be less effective in reducing the risk of basal cell carcinoma. Furthermore, there is no convincing evidence that sunscreen use protects against melanoma. Several studies show either no difference in melanoma rates between sunscreen users and nonusers or a slight increased risk of melanoma in sunscreen users among certain populations.Although there is convincing evidence that nonmelanoma skin cancer is related to cumulative sun exposure, there is less evidence of that association with melanoma. If melanoma were related to cumulative sun exposure, one would expect that outdoor workers would have a greater incidence of melanoma than indoor workers. However, that is not the case. The incidence of melanoma is actually increasing among indoor workers who receive three to nine times less solar UV radiation than outdoor workers. Furthermore, there is a higher incidence of melanoma among whites living in northern states such Delaware, Vermont, and New Hampshire (>30 per 100,000), which enjoy less year-round sunlight and UV radiation than southern states such as Texas,
So sun exposure is not the same as sunburn and sunburn is associated with melanoma not sun exposure. But it gets worse since the suntan lotion you are applying might not be so good for you as well

Sunscreens continued from pg 18 Florida, Arizona, and New Mexico (<25 per 100,000). In California, whites living in San Francisco had a melanoma incidence of 30.5 per 100,000, whereas those living in Los Angeles had an incidence of 24.9 per 100,000.There are a few studies that suggest that chronic, low-grade exposure to sunlight may be protective against melanoma. In one Austrian study, those with chronic sun exposure without sunburn had a reduced incidence of melanoma compared with those with recreational sun exposure. In Germany, outdoor activities during childhood, in the absence of sunburn, were associated with a lower risk of melanoma. Chronic, repeated sun exposure may allow the skin to accommodate to UV radiation by increasing melanin production, thereby reducing the risk of sunburn. An English study published in 2011 showed that regular weekend sun exposure had a protective effect against melanoma, and the Melanin production as a result of tanning researchers postulated that this may be mediated by photo-adaptation or higher vitamin D levels.” So sun exposure is not the same as sunburn and sunburn is associated with melanoma not sun exposure. But it gets worse since the suntan lotion you are applying might not be so good for you as well. As Dr Mercola points out: “One of the 12 active sunscreen ingredients the FDA claims to be unsure about is oxybenzone , found in an estimated 70 percent of sunscreens. This, despite studies showing this chemical acts as an endocrine disruptor and has been linked to reduced sperm count in men and endometriosis in women. Research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows 96 percent of the U.S. population has oxybenzone in their bodies, which is a testament to just how much sunscreen people are using.Indeed, daily use of sunscreen is one of the reasons cited by the FDA for the need to update safety regulations. People are using far more sunscreen these days, so exposure to potentially hazardous ingredients is of far greater concern than in decades past According to a recent Danish study,13 of 29 sunscreen chemicals (45 percent) allowed in the U.S. and/or European Union have the ability to reduce male fertility by affecting calcium signaling in sperm, in part by exerting a progesterone-like effect. Of those 13 chemicals, eight are approved for use in the U.S. Oxybenzone isn’t the only endocrine disruptor though. At least eight other active sunscreen ingredients are suspected of having endocrine disrupting effects. Oxybenzone is also lethal to certain sea creatures, including horseshoe crab eggs, and researchers warn the widespread use of oxybenzone-containing sunscreens pose a serious threat to coral reefs and sea life. This effect is what prompted Hawaiian lawmakers to ban the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate, both of which have been linked to severe coral damage. “ The European Working Group is an organization that looks at safety in personal care products and food as well. Every year they rate sunscreens as to their protection and whether they contain safe products or not. This can be found at ewg.org. So if you are going to slather at least pick and use a product that has been tested and reviewed to be safe for you and your children. Until next month … get well … stay well.

Your Style Guide on the Types of Eyeliners The eyeliner defines the eyes and creates a seductive look. It can enlarge the eyes or make them smaller with the different styles of application. You can even do a winged eye look that will make your eyes look wider. For a casual or dramatic look, the eyeliner is a must in every makeup bag. There are four different types of eyeliners: liquid eyeliner, pencil eyeliner, cream eyeliner, and liquid eyeliner pen. They may all be waterproof or not. As you can see they
are divided into four categories depending on the way they are applied. They have their pros and cons and provide different effects. Let’s see. Liquid Eyeliner As it is liquid you will need a steady hand to apply it. You should use a specially designed brush and have lots of patience. It is not recommended for beginners, maybe after a month or two of practicing you can try it out, but not sooner. Once you are able to draw perfect lines you can use the liquid eyeliner to create the effect of the dramatic cat eyes look. Pencil Eyeliner The pencil eyeliner is the most commonly used eyeliner. It is easy to manage and control the lines and is also very easy to put on. They are the best type if you are in a hurry. You can choose among the vast palette of colours they come in. They can also be waterproof, in fact, the best waterproof eyeliner will make sure your eyes stay perfectly defined throughout the whole day and in any weather condition, even if you

let some tears fall down your face. However, you should always make sure it is sharp enough so it can provide a smooth-straight line. Liquid Eyeliner Pen This type is a combination of a pencil and the liquid eyeliner as it contains ink but has a strong felt tip that you use to apply the eyeliner. They provide you with the stability of the pencil eyeliner and the dramatic effect of the liquid eyeliner. You can find it in a waterproof variation as well or with an additional side as a stamp that will help you create the perfect winged eye look.

Here is an Extra Alternative: the Eyeshadow as an Eyeliner You can also use your favourite shade of eyeshadow to define your eyes. You would only need a brush you can dip into the eyeshadow and draw or smudge along the upper or lower lashline. Just don’t use it on the waterline because it won’t stay and will probably irritate your eyes. Another disadvantage is that it won’t last long.

The cream eyeliner is inside of a small pot where you can dip your angled brush in. As the name suggests, their base is much creamier and their effect is as glamorous as it gets. Whichever type choose, make sure you practice a little bit before you experiment with it prior to a big night out. Mistakes will cause smudges and smudges will soil the whole makeup look on your face. If you are a total beginner, go with the eyeliner liquid pen - there is not an easier alternative except for the eyeliner pencil (which can still cause those smudges, remember?), take a deep breath and start drawing the line. Be confident and have a steady hand. Once you are ready you can start with the mascara.

It’s fair to say that not everyone wants to be stuck inside the gym on a beautiful summer day. Yes, even the regulars! I think we’ve all come to terms with the fact that our warm, by Jennifer Nastasi Guzelak sunny days are limited here in Central New York. We need to take full advantage of them while they last. Taking your workout outdoors allows you ample opportunity to soak up the sun and also add variety to your workout routine. With the right routine and strategy, you can optimize your warm weather workouts and stay fit all summer long. It’s time to turn the great outdoors into your personal home gym. This is a good time to be creative! You can use your backyard, a local park, community recreation center, beach, or lake. We all know that one of the best ways to lose weight and keep it off is to move more. Here are a few ways to actively enjoy the outdoors this summer: • Walk with a friend or co-worker on your lunch break • Go swimming at a community pool or beach • Take up tennis • Ride your bicycle • Try canoeing or kayaking • Take an outdoor boot camp class • Join a beach volleyball league • Do a sunrise yoga class • Hire a personal trainer that’s willing to take your workouts outdoors • Take a day trip to a nearby hiking spot • Add in squats, lunges and push-ups while walking along the lake

Quick Workouts for Your Busiest Days
Just getting out there and moving more is a great place to start, but if you’re not getting the results you are looking for you may need to kick it up a notch. You don’t need to spend hours in the gym to get a full-body workout. In fact, you can get an intense workout in as little as 20 minutes. With highintensity interval training (HIIT), sometimes alternately called burst training, you can get a full-body workout in less time. High-intensity interval training, or HIIT, involves working at the very top end of your capacity for 45 to 60 seconds, then recovering for 3 minutes by walking The warm weather or a slow jog, then returning to very high intensity for another 45 to 60 seconds. Heat-Related Problems with Outdoor Workouts
Heat-related illnesses can create symptoms including fatigue, cramps, and edema. Without intervention, they can progress to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Athletes are especially susceptible to heat exhaustion. Some of the signs of heat-related problems include: • Fast, weak pulse • Nausea • Cramping • Dizziness • Headaches • Weakness • Heavy panting If you feel any of these symptoms, refrain from physical activity, rest, and seek medical attention if necessary. “Pushing through” these obstacles while you’re working out during summer heat can quickly become an invitation for injury or worse.

In Conclusion:
Taking your workouts outside is a great way to actively enjoy summer. When is the best time to work out? Whenever you can. That’s the best time. Find something that you enjoy doing, but also challenges you. Rather than have it feel like work, find the pleasure in working out! Most importantly, enjoy all the beauty that summertime provides. Summer will be over before you know it. Make the most of it while it lasts. Good luck to you! I have been a personal trainer for over seventeen years and I absolutely love what I do. I honestly feel that I have one of the best jobs out there! The most rewarding part of my profession is helping one of my clients succeed at reaching their personal fitness goals. Making a difference in someone’s life makes it all worthwhile. I am currently certified by the National Sports Conditioning Association, Apex Fitness Group, and the International Sports Science Association.

My Mind To Yours
by debra Merryweather
Thinking about Notre Dame I first learned that Notre Dame Cathedral was burning when my Android device notified me that a European Facebook page devoted to preserving natural mother/child bonds had posted video of the fire, which had been burning for just over an hour. I quickly phoned my mother to tell her. News and concern spreads quickly in our electronic age and in the days following the fire, wealthy French citizens pledged nearly $700 million toward rebuilding Notre Dame which is owned by France and the French. And, I hear that “we” should feel angry about this. According to Merriam-Webster, all churches, synagogues, and Temples —Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, Masonic, Labor and otherwise— are temples, as are “the flattened spaces on each side of the forehead” between which our brains sit as we wonder and reason why things happen as they happen. Temples like Notre Dame are called cathedrals because they house the seat, (cathedra,) of a bishop who guides subordinates in their guidance of those who flock to that cathedral for community and purpose. Notre Dame, named for Our Lady, the Blessed Mother, looms large in western history. Notre Dame Cathedral is said to contain 52 acres of timber; its attic was known as “the forest.” According to Fortune Magazine, workers began in 1160 to harvest the primary growth virgin forest from which “the forest” and other parts of Notre Dame

were constructed. Actual construction started in 1163 and the cathedral was completed under King Louis VII in 1345, a date which falls within the Avignon Papacy, a brief period from 1309 to 1376 during which seven popes resided not in Rome but France. Fortune Magazine suggests that during Notre Dame’s construction, wood was already becoming scarce as towns and farms cleared the land, and today, only 4% of Europe’s original forests remain. Civilization brings baggage and some of that baggage affected Notre Dame. Following the Protestant Reformation French Huguenots smashed statues they believed to be idolatrous. Catholic statuary and Catholic veneration of Our Lady still sparks arguments. In Showtime’s series, SMILF, an acronym which changes meaning each episode, Boston mother Bridgette Bird experiences an epiphany while looking at a statue of the Virgin Mary. Bridgette expresses how she would like to have read Mary’s diary lamenting that someone else got to keep Mary’s diary. Bridgette “rescues” the statue. During the French Revolution, Notre Dame was recommissioned as the “Temple of Reason.” Revolutionaries decapitated statues of the 28 Kings of Judah thinking the statues honored French monarchs. The “Cult of Reason” replaced some statues of Our Lady with statues of the Goddess of Reason. Historical sources suggest The Goddess of Reason was modeled after the Greek Goddess Athena, interestingly, herself a virgin. Athena’s mother, the Titan Metis, like her daughter Athena, is associated with wisdom and skill. But in notoriety, Athena eclipses Metis perhaps because myth claims that Athena was born, fully formed, from her father Zeus’s head. The ancient Greeks, who believed they communicated directly with their gods and

goddesses, also believed that sperm contained fully formed mini-humans or homunculi. Greece’s Parthenon is a temple dedicated to the Athena. East of Paris and Greece, the Hagia Sophia, a temple to Holy Wisdom, was built in 537 as the cathedra of the Eastern Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople. For a few decades of her history, Crusaders changed Hagia Sophia into a Roman Catholic Cathedral, but the church eventually reNotre Dame before and after the fire 2019 turned to Byzantine control. In 1453, when the Ottoman Turks took over Constantinople, renaming the city Istanbul, Hagia Sophia was turned into a mosque. In 1935, the Turkish government secularized the building, opening Hagia Sophia as a museum. Notre Dame’s stint as the Temple of Reason did not last long. The structure itself fell into disrepair and was briefly repurposed as a food warehouse. Later, when the revolutionary Jacobins fell from grace, Napoleon Bonaparte and the people of France, while maintaining ownership of Notre Dame, restored use of the cathedral, at no cost, to the Catholic Church. Inside Notre Dame, in 1804, Pope Pius VII handed Napoleon the crown with which Napoleon crowned himself, an act which may have served to underscore Napoleon’s thinking about Church’s place in Napoleon’s realm. Diverging thoughts about religion’s power within larger diverse realms fuels much conflict today. May, still, for many Catholics, is the month of Mary, the mother of Jesus – the Blessed Mother, Notre Dame. May Day is an international labor holiday, a celebration of Spring and America’s phonetic spelling of the French call for help, “m’aidez.” Many in France and elsewhere need help. The Christian humanist, Erasmus, said, “the entire world is my temple…” Worlds exist between our temples.

Word on the Street by Bill McClellan
To: The Congress of the United States of America Trump is not the problem. You are. He would not exist but for the glaring vile in our system you fail to fix. You are incompetents mixed with cowards, as none of you address the system in any measurable way. You should be our champions. Instead you are our greatest shame. You planted Trumps degraded mustard seed and you cultivated this degradation for decades and Trump is the full-blown result. The full-blown result of your greedy power protecting incompetence. A last-ditch effort to try anything but you. Even a damaging blowhard, spoiled, self-centered, valueless idiot is preferred over you. Do you ever think about how many thousands of Americans rained out of the sky blown to pieces for our greatness? Wherever they are buried none of them face your way. That is what you did to the dreams of our founders and the chills of the Star-Spangled Banner. This article is about the most costly and despicable conduct in human history. That is the selling of greatness, one issue at a time, for pure selfish traitorous greed. A Nation founded with clear intent. With Equality, equal justice and decency foremost. A spine-chilling effort of the finest kind. Decimated by the Congress of the United States of America by disloyalty to the well-being of the people you were intended to govern.
In recent decades you have decimated the course of our Founders. You have failed our well-being, succumbing to base human weakness. For your own greed and power, you allowed a very few to trample your rule and assume rule that would protect the people. Today, wealth rules you. Most of you don’t even know of the significance of the anti-trust legacy of Woodrow Wilson or Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt. Within lies your obsequious disgrace and failure. For this, our bounty is in the hands of a few and the quality of life for our people, and once revered noble course, have degraded disgracefully. Our country crumbles in your presence, because of you. The same economic parallels now exceed those that caused our revolution and founding. A few with untold wealth in a sea of deprivation. On thousands of fronts you have sold your decision and thus your souls as you fail and have failed. An ant hill is built one piece of sand at a time. A country is ruined one bad law at

a time. From phone and cable billing, to allowing unspeakable wealth, to allowing this wealth to not pay taxes as our land crumbles. As the common citizen struggles depleting without value, the hours and days of their lives, you fail. Then you give the mighty 1.3 trillion in tax breaks as a husband and wife are forced to work to the bone. Blinding glaring wrong, as freedom is consumed by corporate citizen spying and regulation. 1% has half the bounty of America. 4 families enjoy more wealth than the bottom 50% of Americans. Amazon does not pay taxes. Our land is pursuing the economic lack of values of the third world. Millions already live in this economic reality right here in America. To be clear it is because of you, the Congress of the United States of America. Better known these days as the protectors of wealthy and corporate rule. You, revoltingly and disgustingly sign law written by the corporate beneficiary, you don’t even read. Because they gave you money. I refer you to the blood of heroes. Each line in these laws, a grain of sand degrading America. And when you leave you often become the evil lobbyist that is the epitome of and end result of your complete failure to understand Constitutional intent. And the totality of cost is the honesty of the chills we feel when we hear the music of our land. A land that not too long ago was in the greatest pursuit of all: fairness and equality for all people. A very special government was in place struggling with this pursuit and you failed to guide. Your departure was so extreme that normal course to correct may require once again, great upheaval. You have failed beyond the red line where climate change or nuclear negligence or social disorder may make the corrections for you. You failed in not seeing the greatest price to any land is the failure to understand the human weaknesses of greed of power. For in their presence there is no common good. You allowed the self-serving design of business to usurp our land. For greed and power you allowed that this traitorous behavior is just fine. Today, you are puppets, maneuvered by very smart people and money. You have no value to our people. As Greatness weeps, I refer you to all that you have failed:
Excerpt from Benjamin Franklin’s Final Speech at the Constitutional Convention in 1787 - from the notes of James Madison
Sir, I agree to this Constitution, with all its Faults, if they are such; because I think a General Government necessary for us, and there is no Form of Government but what may be a Blessing to the People if well administered; and I believe farther that this is likely to be well administered for a Course of Years, and can only end in Despotism as other Forms have done before it, when the People shall become so corrupted as to need Despotic Government, being incapable of any other. I doubt too whether any other Convention we can obtain, may be able to make continued on pg 32

To: The Congress of the United States of America continued from pg 29 a better Constitution: For when you assemble a Number of Men to have the Advantage of their joint Wisdom, you inevitably assemble with those Men all their Prejudices, their Passions, their Errors of Opinion, their local Interests, and their selfish Views. From such an Assembly can a perfect Production be expected? It therefore astonishes me, Sir, to find this System approaching so near to Perfection as it does; and I think it will astonish our Enemies, who are waiting with Confidence to hear that our Councils are confounded, like those of the Builders of Babel, and that our States are on the Point of Separation, only to meet hereafter for the Purpose of cutting one another’s throats. Thus, I consent, Sir, to this Constitution because I expect no better, and because I am not sure that it is not the best. On the whole, Sir, I cannot help expressing a Wish, that every Member of the Convention, who may still have Objections to it, would with me on this Occasion doubt a little of his own Infallibility, and to make manifest our Unanimity, put his Name to this instrument. And thus was launched mankind’s greatest hope and pursuit. A pathway to embracing human justice and a beacon for the well-being of mankind: You, not Trump, long ago reset course in the most shameful, disgraceful, harmful way there is. Some of us get lucky and do have to fight in battle. We come home. We are left to speak on behalf of our hallowed dead. I offer to you on their behalf, not on policy where it is normal to differ, but on the pursuit of common good where we all agree, that the spirits of our Founders and our Hallowed Heroes cringe with unspeakable revulsion at your glaring failure to lead. The Torch was yours to hold it high … instead, due to your failures, humanity weeps. You have the most special obligation on earth representing this great land. Get your damn act together.

Computers & the Web by Nancy Roberts
My Favorite Things Every so often, I take stock of which tech tools I’m using most frequently. My criteria of selection are simple: - It’s easy to use - It does an excellent job - It saves me time - I’m used to it and haven’t been convinced there’s a better mousetrap - It’s fun - It allows me to do something I couldn’t otherwise Some of these tools are free, some are very expensive, some are moderately so, and most are now subscription based – this spares the user from sticker shock (as in, paying $1000 for a design suite), and it keeps revenue coming in for the creators. Office suite: I still use, on a subscription basis, Microsoft Office. It’s not an absolute “must,” but for a time there was some incompatibility between this suite and Google’s “Docs,” which, at no cost, has a version of Word, Powerpoint, and Excel, all equally powerful and very easy to store and share.
Gary Teeter

Night on the Town Contest! He chose FIRESIDE INN for dinner & will arrive in style in a limo from CICERO MANOR LIMOUSINE WITH CENTRAL NEW YORK

Online storage: You will pay for storage over a certain limit, and the contenders here include Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud and OneDrive. There are others, and in this space, there isn’t exactly a one-for-one comparison. If you have a requirement for very large files, if high levels of security are an absolute must, or if it’s just you or your small business, you’ll want to compare offerings. Google Drive’s second tier (at $9.99/month) offers all that I need, even with a moderate amount of video. But while there is something handy about having your files stored locally, even on external drives, the reassurance you get from knowing your files are backed up on cloud storage is a real plus. Graphics: Adobe’s subscription for Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator. They are expensive, but because most graphic tools take more than a bit of learning, you’ll be inclined to stay with what you know – in spite of the fact that they continually add new features, or change the way a screen in laid out. Gimp, an open-source alternative to Photoshop, is handy if all you want to do is some quick photo editing or the occasional layout. Also in this category is a very fine online tool called Canva. It has pre-sized templates for most standard applications (8.5x11, postcards, Instagram posts, Facebook headers, etc.) and pre-designed (though clearly “packaged”) layouts for something quick and easy. Web design: For your personal or club website, even for a small business, Wix is hard to beat. No, it’s not the perfect platform for a large corporation or for situations in which you’ll want secure areas or user memory, but it’s clean, easy to use, reasonably priced, and does include simple tools for shopping, blogging, and forms.

Fitness: I don’t have a Fitbit, but I did get interested in tracking steps walked, so I hunted around and found a nice, simple to use tool that is iPhone integrated (the comparable ones for Android I didn’t find as useful). This one is called, naturally, Steps, and the basic model is free and simple tracks the steps you walk each day. You can set a target (it defaults to the recommended 10,000), and for a small fee you can upgrade to keep track of calories and make it look a little fancier. What I particularly like about it is it resets to zero at midnight, and keeps track of your history so you can track your progress. The one downside is, of course, you need to keep your phone on your person wherever you go, so it’s most handy if you take a daily walk rather than try to keep track of all steps walked each day. Efficiency: I use two primary tools: Google Calendar, and Workflowy. Together, they have replaced (mostly) my paper calendar. Google Calendar will show up on your phone and/or your desktop or tablet, will provide whatever alerts you give it, tracks events and work history endlessly, and integrates with other tools like Waze (on which more later) to let you know when it’s time to leave for an appointment. Workflowy is an “endless document,” or “document of documents,” on which you can keep track of the things you need to accomplish in long list format. They can be detailed —broken into steps or subunits— and copied from day to day. You can view them in a long list, or unit by unit. The way you organize them is up to you. If you have several types of things you keep track of, like a grocery list, a home chores list, a whom to call list, you can break those down by pages. I simply keep a list of all the things I need to do day to day – the ones with due dates will be on my Google Calendar as well. Travel: Google Maps is great, and will talk you through a drive and will give you a turn by turn set of directions, including street names or route numbers. But quite a while back I got used to Waze, another step by step tool that is not only handy but fun to use. It will alert you to other “Wazers” around, including your friends who use Waze, but the feature I like best is that it includes updates from other Wazers: traffic jams, police patrols, accidents

or hazards on the road. I have learned to pay attention when it warns me to take an alternate route: usually it means there’s a good reason to want to travel another way. It also features a very clear map, with your current location, direction of travel, distance to go and expected time of arrival. You can add people to your trip so they know when you will arrive, including any delays. A fun feature is you can add your own (or someone else’s) voice so the directions are delivered the way you want to hear them. Amazon Prime: For the price, it has been a great service, offering quick delivery, free returns, videos and movies, and original series. It now offers delivery from local restaurants (in selected areas) as well as many grocery items. More and more restaurants and now grocery stores are offering home delivery – and I’m not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing, though on the whole it certainly will save time and offer service to people who might not be able to get around readily. Discounts: There are many browser extensions you can get now that bring you the best price on any given item you’re shopping for. Honey is one of them, and it’s definitely saved me money. Since I do most of my shopping via Amazon, it will alert me when another source can save me money (it quickly hunts for the best available price on the item that I want) and then it’s up to me whether it’s easier to stay where I’m shopping, or save the money by going elsewhere. New to me: PDFDrive. This is a cloud storage location for books on PDF – free. It’s a search engine/ storage drive boasting over 78 million (yes, million) eBooks you can download, bookmark, and share. Needless to say, you’ll not likely get current best sellers, but you will find some interesting and unusual reading material.

Brew Time by Kristin Merritt
When the Weather is Nice, Grab Yourself a Berliner Weisse! April showers bring May flowers, and along with it, warmer weather and brighter days; making it feel like Central New York and the people living here are finally emerging from their winter den. I know for myself, while I love the robust and comforting porters and stouts during the colder months, when the weather starts to improve, I begin to crave lighter and more refreshing beers. A Berliner Weisse is one of those craveable beers of spring and summer. When you see or hear the word “Berliner” I’m pretty sure most folks think of the German city of Berlin, and that would be the correct place to start. While the word “Weisse” is a German surname meaning “white.” The Berliner Weisse dates back to the 16th century and originated in Northern Germany. It is a variation of a wheat beer with a low ABV of approximately 3% and normally appears slightly cloudy due to being unfiltered. Fermentation consists of a mixture of yeast and lactic acid bacteria, which gives this beer it’s distinct flavor and thirst-quenching tartness. During the late 19th century, the Berliner Weisse was the most popular brew in Berlin with about 700 different breweries producing their own versions of the beer. In 1809, it is said that Napoleon’s troops
designated it “The Champagne of the North.” Eventually, its popularity took a dive into the 20th century with only 2 breweries producing this beer in the city. However, today, as craft beer has increased with popularity, so has the rise of producing variations of the traditional Berliner Weisse both in Germany and here in the United States. Modern brewing methods typically use a lower percentage of wheat, ranging from 25-50% and the distinct tart or sour flavor produced by either second fermentation or the addition of Lactobacillus (Yes, the same probiotic bacteria used to produce yogurt!) or sometimes Brettanomyces (a form of yeast). In addition, today you will also find may different variations that include fruits and other elements added in the brewing process to make for some completely unique and exciting Berliner Weisse brews! If you’re anxious to try a refreshing Berliner Weisse, here a few of my favorites… Zuerst by Buried Acorn Brewing Company, (Syracuse, NY), 3.4% ABV – This mixed fermentation brew is barrel-aged in French oak for 6 months and reflects a more traditional Berliner Weisse. This fantastical beer is light and clean with funky fruit and herbal notes but overall tart. It’s a great beer for your taste buds to really dive in and taste something unique. on tap per the brewery’s website, I’m hopeful that on my next trip to The Flower City, I’ll be able to pop in have a pint of this lovely beer. Lime Berliner Weisse by Resurgence Brewing Company, (Buffalo, NY), 4.5% ABV, is one of my recent favorites that I’ve discovered, and I’m hopeful to be able to regularly get my hands on this beer so that I can drink it all summer long! Tart, lots of lime, and very carbonated, it’s extremely refreshing on its own but would also beautifully compliment so many of your Mexican and Tex-Mex dishes. (Just give me all the tacos, guac and salsa, please!) Look to your specialty beer shops, like Branching Out Bottle Shop at Township 5 in Camillus, to find cans to stock your fridge with! Festina Pêche by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, (Milton, DE), 4.5% ABV is another one of my favorite Berliner Weisse beers that I came across last summer. It’s light, slightly sour/tart, peach-forward (both in taste and aroma!), crisp and clean, and one of the best brews from Dogfish Head, IMO. I’m looking forward to tasting 2019’s batch, which should (hopefully) be hitting store shelves soon, as it’s only available during the spring and summer months. If not, I’ll be waving BYEEEEEE CNY, and be taking an excursion to the Delaware shore this summer! (which I highly recommend regardless!) Another great fruit-forward Berliner would be The Passionate One by Ithaca Beer Company, (Ithaca, NY), 4.75% ABV. Tart tropical notes of passion fruit and guava are prevalent and perfect for warm weather. There is so much flavor and tons to love about this very aromatic and poignant brew. It’s basically a luau in your mouth! (Aloha!) Look for this on tap at our local restaurants and also in our local grocers – it is sold in cans. As well, Ithaca Beer Company also makes a few more Berliner Weisse beers including Cayuga Cruiser which is brewed in the more traditional style without added fruit, and fruit Berliners Blueberry Soiree, Raspberry Soiree, and Früt – all worth checking out. And now, the best for last … If you’re really up to trying a totally different and unique Berliner Weisse, then you’ll want to sample Raspberry Blush by Mikkeller Brewing, (San Diego, CA), 4% ABV. This is, hands-down, one of my favorite brews on our entire planet Earth (and perhaps the galaxy)! Brewed with raspberries and coffee, the pour is bright pink with an aroma of coffee. Upon first taste the beer is slightly tart and raspberry forward but then finishes with coffee, and perhaps with even some chocolate or caramel notes in there too. It sounds so weird, but it’s legit amazeballs! Find brew in cans at your local beer bars, and specialty beer shops around town. In addition, Mikkeller also brews Double Blush, which is pretty much the same, except that it boasts a higher alcohol content at 6.5% ABV and is considered an “Imperial” Berliner Weisse. Are you salivating yet? As luck would have it, you now have a variety of enjoyable Berliners to choose from to quench that thirst! Cheers!
