What it’s like to be a Billionaire The Billionaires are one of the finest dance bands anywhere. And you can find them just about anywhere in the smack dab of Central New York’s club scene. On my numerous outings to see them perform I’ve always been impressed with their ability to play. They are a no excuses, can play, group of stellar musicians. They can take a room of nice civil folks behaving themselves and in about 3 songs, have the room bouncing of the walls. While I would categorize them as a variety dance band - which is accurate - they still have a little something extra above that classification. Each of these musicians are at the top of their class in the proficiency department, and make hard to play songs look easy. As it should be. I’ve seen them take songs and walk them around the block a few times. I’ve seen them do Michael Jackson medleys that are damn spot-on. I always found it odd that I don’t really see them covered in the press or the media. I don’t see them recognized in the local award ceremonies. I have to admit this bugs me. And actually, it bugs me more than it bugs them. Perhaps they’re working so much that they don’t have time to think about it. Maybe they’re set in the confidence of being a band that actually works and they don’t really need the validation. A case where hearsay on this band exceeds media validation. I love that about them. The real deal.

Enough on that, though. The Billionaires, fronted by Anna Lopez White. If you’re a singer you strive for what she does so effortlessly. She sings her ass off. She’s a blast, with the natural gift and ability to make you comfortable like you’re coming over for a barbecue in the back yard. Charming, cute as a bug, darling...ferociously fun as an exciting singer, she’ll be bouncing around the room with you. After all she started it. And pretty soon you find yourself without inhibition, busting your best boogie in a sea of boogie people. The band backing her is extraordinary. Andy Jordan is the 20-thumbs bass player who is the master of the funk. I’ve watched him play all things possible and quite a bit that is impossible. Rob Hoston is a sly killer on guitar. You won’t see him pontificating on guitar with flashy nonsense. Everything that comes off him is perfectly tight, well-said and in the perfect no BS dosage. Daryl Hunt holds the whole thing down pounding nail after quarter-note nail into their great big house of groove. And their most recent addition of Kimo Cortini on the keyboards lets the bands sound extend into relentless possibilities. The merit of the Billionaire sound is such that it was a no-brainer for Brent Carter of Average White Band to sit-in with the Billionaires in late August, right here in Syracuse! Feel like dancing? Go see this group. But, before you do check out this interview with Anna Lopez White.

ALW: This December will be 12 years since I joined the band. CS: Please characterize the Billionaires’ sound. ALW: We play a little bit of everything. We cover Journey, Mary J. Blige, Aretha Franklin, Prince, Gretchen Wilson, and James Brown. CS: Hands down, you are my favorite singer in Syracuse. Tell me your singing story. ALW: Thanks Chuck! What a compliment! Well, most singers start in the church. And yes I did, too! When I was young I started singing in the choir at St. John Vianney Church in Orlando, Florida. From there I went to sing in every singing contest I could find. When I was 19 I sang on the road with a band for the first time. What an experience that was. I traveled to Mississippi, Georgia, & Florida. I saw it all ( good & bad). I learned about life on the road real fast; but I believe I am the person I am today because of those experiences. CS: As a front person for the band you have a lot of naturalness, and charisma. You are in a word: bold! Off the stage I know you as a humble pal, nice lady with girlnext-door quality. What happens that makes you so ferociously fun on stage? ALW: Vodka! Ok all silliness aside... I become someone else on stage. I never knew what that was until I heard Beyonce in an interview speaking about her alter ego, “Sasha Fierce.” I don’t have another name for myself; but I do love who I become when I hit the stage. I try to think of myself from the audiences’ point of view. When I go to a concert - I hope to smile, laugh, cry and just feel good. I like to see people happy and singing helps me spread a little more joy to the world. CS: The Billionaires play a lot of shows. This means you have a great collection of stories, I just know it. Tell us a funny Billionaire war story. ALW: Oh my. I think the guys are going to have to help me out with this one. Does choking on a piece of popcorn while singing Donna Summer count? CS: It sure does. Thank you for your honesty. Hahaha. Ok. How about sharing a special highlight or two. ALW: My personal Billionaires favorite would have to be “Swinging in the Square” in downtown Syracuse. This little girl was dancing in the audience when she caught my eye. I just had to bring her on stage. She danced with me and the crowd went crazy. To see her parents smile watching their little girl brought me back to my childhood. My parents were always very supportive of my singing career. They never missed a show when I was young. I wanted that little girl to have that feeling. CS: What’s in the Billionaires’ future? ALW: Who knows? I’m just happy to still be doing what I love. If the gigs keep coming, I’ll keep playing. I think it would be great to play on stage with my daughter one day. She’s been drumming since she was four. Maybe that’s the next chapter. We’ll see. I’m just thankful for everyday. You never know when you’re time is up. CS: Whats your impression of the Syracuse music scene? ALW: I lived in Orlando, Florida and I’ve met a lot of talented people; but I must say there’s an enormous amount of talent in this area. Every time I have a chance to get out to see LIVE music - I do. CS: What would be your best advice for aspiring singers?

ALW: Just sing from the heart and you will always capture your audience. Know the lyrics and find out what they mean. I don’t drink tea & honey unless I want to. Drink lots of water!!! Have a nice glass of wine (preferably a Colloca Estate wine, nowadays) before you hit the stage to relax. If your vocal chords are a little sore or raspy don’t get mad - change it up for the “Just sing from the heart and you will always capture night. your audience. Know the lyrics and find out what they CS: Who inspires you as mean.” -Anna Lopez White a singer? ALW: Wow! It’s hard to just pick one. Bonnie Raitt for her relaxed persona, Vince Gill for his tenderness, Martina McBride for her range, Zac Brown Band for his versatility. Surprised? Yup this girl loves country music! CS: Where can we find the Billionaires and what they’re up to? ALW: Facebook under Billionaires or our website www.billionairesband.com CS: Okay, that about wraps it up. Thank you, so much for taking the time to talk with Table Hopping. ALW: Thank you very much, Chuck. My pleasure! Before we know it, autumn will be upon us. It’ll be time for pumpkin spiced everything, sweaters, and of course, harvest. Fall in the Finger Lakes is stunningly beautiful and in most cases, the busiest time of year. Tasting rooms are full with people and off in the distance is the hum of harvesting equipment. The crisp air smells of fruit juice and the sunshine reflects off the lake creating some of the most inviting daytime scenery I have ever seen. In some years, harvest can begin as soon as the end of August here in the Finger Lakes. The first to be picked are grapes used to make sparkling wine. Since it is fermented twice, it’s best to pick the grapes when they have very little sugar. The longer a grape is left on the vine, the higher the sugar content, or Brix, gets. Next to be harvested are typically Chardonnay and other dry white varietals. Reds are then picked and Riesling is typically the last to be taken from the vines. Then, typically by about the second week of October, all but ice wines have been harvested and production has already begun. This round-the-clock work calls for celebrating, so each winery does something to commemorate the successful growing season and to kick off another year of wine production. If you’re considering a trip to the Finger Lakes during harvest season, I promise there will be something going on each and every day in September and October. I am sure you’ve all heard of a 13-count “baker’s dozen”, but on September 5 and 6, Swedish Hill and Goose Watch Wineries sell by the “Winemaker’s Dozen” during Fall Fever Days. For every case of wine purchases at these sister wineries, you will receive the usual 15% case discount plus a free bottle of wine. I like how winemakers do math. On the following weekend, September 12 and 13, Hosmer Winery celebrates harvest with their Some Like it Hot event featuring live music, local cuisine, lawn games and local artisans showcasing their hand-crafted specialties. Thirsty Owl Wine Co. celebrates their 13th anniversary all weekend, hosting the final installment of their 2015 Artist Series and a live band. At Varick Winery, enjoy wine tastings and treats like grape pies, frozen grape pops, grape cookies, grape cheesecake, and more.

Brew Time by GLORIA RAKOWSKY
What’s In A Name? It’s no secret that I love craft beer; I love it so much I entirely switched careers and haven’t looked back. While my career in beer has had its ups and downs, it’s ingrained in my daily life (and I don’t mean I drink it every day!). I’m always reading, researching and reaching out to beer drinkers everywhere in a variety of methods. During my beer journey, I’ve read lots of articles about terminology when it comes to craft beer drinkers – beer snobs, nerds, enthusiasts, geeks, connoisseurs and so on. This has led me to wonder, “If I had to label myself, what would I call myself and why?” Please take note that by no means are my definitions backed up by any linguistic data or hard cold facts; just
JAPANESE STEAKHOUSE & SUSHI BAR
my humble opinion and interpretations of these terms. The term beer snob can have a negative connotation but it also has a flip side. It could mean that as a beer drinker, you know what you like, can be picky about beer styles, and boast about your extensive knowledge base and like to show it off in front of those who may not know as much. Depending on your personality, this type of snobbery could be viewed in a condescending light by others. Some beer snobs just know a lot, work in the industry, and also like to enlighten those (without making them feel stupid) who are willing to listen to their favorite subject. True to the traditional terms we all know, nerds and geeks are what they are. They love beer, talking about it, get together, share their rare finds (known as bottle shares) and can go back and forth for hours praising the glory of their favorite nectar. They go to brew fests in groups, talk to brewers and brewery staff, and ask questions. If a brew fest has information tables, they’ll go to each one and want to learn and share. Some nerds and geeks will talk your ear off if you let them, whether you’re interested or not. If the terms nerd or geek are a turnoff for you even though you know you’re one, then just use “beer enthusiast.” I’m not going to lie; I’m a nerd in general – a Trekkie (yes I’ve been to a Star Trek convention), a freak for Les Miserables (the original with Colm Wilkinson), and yes, a beer nerd too. Beer connoisseurs are those who have either gone to school to places like UC Davis or Florida International Book your hoLiDay parTies noW! University of Vermont’s “The Business of Craft Beer Professional Certificate” (learn.uvm.edu/program/business-of-craftbeer/) and the University of Oklahoma’s “Chemistry of Beer” course (janux. ou.edu/course.chem4970. html). I’d like to think of myself as a beer educator, but by no means would I call myself a connoisseur. So how would I label myself? First and foremost, a beer educator. As a former brand ambassador for a brewery, I was always speaking with customers about different beer styles and the particular beers I was pouring. As a former professor of Spanish, the educator part will always be in me, no matter the subject. As a beer writer (researcher and historian too), I like to educate the public about the wonderful world of craft beer. Am I a beer snob? Yes and no. I know what I like and don’t like and enjoy brewpubs and other establishments with a fine selection of craft beer. However, I do NOT judge others of their beer choices. If someone enjoys a beer that most snobs frown upon, I raise my glass to them and still say cheers since they know what they like. I recently represented the women’s craft beer group I founded (which is all about beer education) at a meeting of home brewers. When I mentioned a macrobrewery that yes, does have the funds to buy up micro breweries and churns out some lackluster stuff for the masses, I received very loud “BOO’s” just mentioning them. To me, those are beer snobs in the worst way – to boo me, cut me off and not even let me finish my sentence. That’s not the snob I want to be or am or ever will be.

Truth be told, I really don’t care about labels (except for cool ones on beer bottles). They are meaningless words used to categorize, catalog and define and limit us. We are whom we are no matter what beer we choose to enjoy. Non-beer drinkers, I applaud you too for enjoying what you enjoy and will toast with you anytime you want. So what if I’m an educator, nerd, snob or anything else? I love beer and that’s all that matters to me, as it should to you. So go grab a tall cool one and enjoy! Cheers!

that place “right and justice” in the forefront of all that they do. Elections are about a window in time that we are afforded the opportunity to study those that want to lead. Every now and then a rare individual comes along that not only has extraordinary ability but is also guided by the sense of equality and compassion that is imbedded in the Bill of Rights and the Great intent and wisdom of our founders. Jean Kessner is such an individual. To give you a good understanding of why Jean Kessner will be an invaluable asset in the New York State Assembly I would like to offer some groundwork as to why I really believe you will agree. In 1979, Jean began working at WIXT News Channel 9 as an Investigative Reporter where she remained for 26 years. She tended to gravitate toward stories specializing in the environment, nuclear power, nuclear waste, workers’ rights, and government accountability. Great strides were made in these areas largely due to her diligence and in depth findings and reporting. This was recognized and during this period Jean won numerous awards, including four prestigious Edward R. Murrow awards. In the Assembly Jean will Target Quality Education including the promised Fisca Equity Education money promised the 128th District…Good Paying Jobs: Jean is a 26 year member of the CWA and knows how to protect and go after Good Work…Health and Environment: Jean will advocate and support issues that R.I.P. protect our Health and the Health of the Environment. Another top priority will be Public Safety emphasizing Community oriented Police training so vital to the People and the elite nature of Police. Jean believes heroes and people do match and will advocate for Policy that enhances this reality. And Yes “Albany Reform”. I believe Integrity foreshadows most that stray. In Jean’s words: “I will shed much needed sunshine in the Assembly Chambers and I will be a strong voice in enacting reforms.” It is the nature of those that become Investigative Reporters to have a Jean Kessner, Syracuse Common Councilor At-Large and strong desire to uncover 2015 candidate for New York State Assembly district 128. and expose wrongdoing. Integrity and compassion and the well- being of the people are their foremost goals each and every day. And they are not Politicians. Imagine if they were. would have a good friend. One that knows what Hallowed means, and one with a guiding integrity that never for a moment forgot the Crimson Sacrifice that humbles all that serve the people. Jean was asked what she thought of these prestigious Awards. Her answer: “What matters is that you do good work and you give it everything you’ve got, and if somebody says, ‘Hey, you get an award for this,’ it’s like, ‘Hey cool, but “I would’ve done it anyway.” This is the answer of someone that is there for you. Someone that is answering a calling to a greater good. Because they care about you and this great land. Jean Kessner is genuine. Her compassion, integrity and abilities are precisely what we need to keep our great State moving forward “for the people”. Those with tendency to avoid the common good Call will think twice in the presence of Jean ahead for Kessner. Those that have found hiding Take-Out places for corruption will be forever wary in the presence of one highly trained and skilled in routing out whatever harms the people. Get Yourself To The Fair! I had an article ready to go but I was then reminded that the New York State Fair opens up soon. As a dedicated health professional I would be remiss if I didn’t have some diatribe against the artery clogging junk to eat at the fair. fair is hiding something. That’s right, hiding something. Maybe they say, “It never changes,” but they are hiding the fact that they are too weak to make it around the fair on their own. Oh, maybe they are hiding the real fact from you but I think they are often hiding the reason from themselves as well...Not wanting to acknowledge their debilitated status. Maybe they say, “All the food there is unhealthy,” but again they are really hiding the fact that they have a hard time making food choices. If you call them on this they will say...no...I just don’t like the fair...to which I have always countered with, “What’s not to like?” but now I see I will have to ask, “What are you hiding?” All those people who say I went for 30 years in a row...What made you stop? Did you start doing something else instead? The exaltation of the Fair is easy. First, is its proximity people! The damn fair is in our backyard and for that reason alone deserves a visit. As do the Zoo, the Everson, the MOST, Symphoria, Syracuse Stage, etc., but they are here year round. The State Fair is more ephemeral... here but a few days at WELCOME BACK STUDENTS! the end of summer. Gone before you have even gone through your full list of reasons not to go. The Fair IS exercise! local state and federal levels. Jean is currently a Councilor-AtLarge for the City of Syracuse. Jean’s son, Brennan Kessner is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Johns Hopkins University. He is married to Angela Hart, also a Naval Academy graduate, and they have four children: Parker, Maya, Zoe, and Maro. Brennan is a retired Navy SEAL and today is a Special Agent with the FBI. Jeans Investigative exploits are legend. One vital example of leadership and experience that enabled a very critical perception for potential disaster impressed me greatly. Jean was deeply interested in covering nuclear plants in the Syracuse area, said Ron Lombard, now general manager and news director of News10Now Channel 10 and a former co-worker of Jean’s. “That was a very important thing for us to be on top of,” said Lombard. Following the Fukushima Japan Nuclear Disaster, there were problems at the Fitzpatrick Nuclear Plant in Oswego. Jean a Councilor-At-Large for the City of Syracuse did some checking. Her Investigative Reporter senses were in full swing. Jean noted the Nuclear Regulatory Commission listed twelve actions that must be taken at Mark I BWRs in the U.S. All of those had to be implemented at Fitzpatrick before the plant could be re-started. She noted neglect at Fukushima resulted in great loss of life, untold human suffering and massive environmental harm in much of the Country of Japan. She noted Syracuse is just 36 miles from the Fitz-

patrick reactor. She said “As a political representative of the people of Syracuse, I have a strong and vested interest in the safe operation of the atomic reactors at Nine Mile Point”. Jean took action to insure that Fitzpatrick not only complied with lessons learned from Fukushima but also to insure that there is a “0” tolerance for complacency or neglect in future monitoring. It is this kind of leadership that insures a Nuclear Disaster “Never” happens. Imagine a career of this kind of care and you have Jean Kessner. Jean is running for the seat vacated by New York State 128th District Assemblyman Sam Roberts. The Governor appointed Sam to Commissioner of the State agency that oversees all welfare and disability cases. Sam has placed his full support behind Jean. Also former Assembly Member Joan Christensen who in her own right set a high standard of integrity in the Assembly has announced her full support behind Jean. Joan has known Jean through her Investigative Reporter and Political years and says “Jean demonstrates Finger Lakes Mall E integrity, objectivity and commitment and has all the qualities I look for in an elected official to serve our community in the Free Admission F New York State Assembly”. Jean will join the Assembly and will lead with Compassion and Integrity. She will not be 1 of 150 members. She will be one that sets an example and standard for 150 and her qualities and background will be a great asset to New York State Government. This election is an opportunity to recognize and place in power one who not only truly cares about your wellbeing, but has invaluable unique experience and a strong desire to support and protect the people of New York State. Jean will be a Beacon. Please vote in the “Thursday”, September 10th Primary and Please share.

My Mind To Yours

Sounds of Silence In the film version of Tennessee Williams’ drama “Suddenly Last Summer,” a manipulative aunt, Violet Venable, played by Katherine Hepburn, attempts to bribe a handsome psychiatrist, Dr. John Cukrowicz, played by Montgomery Cliff, into lobotomizing Venable’s niece, Catherine played by Elizabeth Taylor, in order to silence Catherine. Catherine knew the truth about the death of Violet’s son Sebastian. Tennessee Williams wrote the play in 1958 during an era known neither for tolerance of dissenting opinions nor open discussion of difficult personal matters. Visual stereotypes abound when fear based silence reigns. Interestingly, the free speech movement of the 1960’s started at UC Berkeley, the same campus where some students tried to stop invitee Bill Maher from giving the mid-term commencement speech earlier this year because some students disapproved of Maher’s comments about mid-east politics. Forced silence is deafening. I worry that in our increasingly electronically interconnected world we

minds, I was disappointed to see how these conflicts were projected on-screen. These sequences failed to have the same impact as say, HUSTLE & FLOW, and failed to delve deep into the heart of the issues. Instead, the film takes the simplistic stance that all cops are bad, and all managers (in the second half of the film Suge Knight becomes a major character) are moneygrubbing con-men. Though the drama was heavy-handed, this isn’t to say STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON isn’t fantastic and fun. The musical sequences, particularly the group’s live shows, are absolutely electric. Director F. Gary Gray mixed real recordings with performances of the cast to establish a genuine sound that perfectly captured the essence of N.W.A. The performances by the entire cast are spectacular. It was no easy task to portray individuals who stood as ground-breaking pioneers, and it seemed especially difficult considering that many of the figures who in the film are still STRAIGHT OUTTA appeared relevant today. Pascale’s Italian Bistro There is this fabulous restaurant in Syracuse called Pascale’s Italian Bistro at Drumlins that you just have to try for yourself to understand how great it is! It’s a place where the locals would tell you to go if you were to ask. There are specials every night such as BYOB (Bring your own bottle of wine!) every Wednesday or $14.95 Prime Rib Saturday nights with live music starting at 7:30 (You can check the website for upcoming artist that will be performing or better yet sign up for their newsletter!). They are located at Drumlins, 800 Nottingham Rd. At Pascale’s Italian Bistro they serve fresh, local and house made is the standard, never the exception! For example, the bread and desserts are baked at Pascale’s Bake House located on the premises and the salad dressings are made in the kitchen. The menu reflects local produce in season because the vegetables are purchased from local farmers. Continuing with the fresh and local theme, the chef sent out a beautiful and delicious heirloom tomato, English cucumber and fresh mozzarella salad dressed lightly with an aged balsamic and extra virgin olive oil as our appetizer. When you are looking over the menu you will immediately notice that there is absolutely something for everyone. As for appetizers you will find a variety from Fresh Shrimp Cocktail to Calamari & Banana Peppers, Whole Grain Salad with Shrimp Scampi (Faro and Cous Cous, topped with Warm Shrimp Scampi) to Utica Greens and even Grilled Raddichio and Mushrooms (Variety of freshly sautéed mushrooms, roasted peppers and fresh mozzarella). The fresh and delicious salad choices are also worth bragging about. Stop in and try the caesar salad, the beet and goat cheese salad or the butternut squash salad (green apples, candied pecans and dried cranberries dressed with apple cider vinaigrette). You are not going to have an easy decision because they all look delicious! Pascale’s Italian Bistro has several mouth watering entrée selections. Options include PASTA- that includes a dinner salad with the house made Italian vinaigrette and your pasta choices are fettuccini, rigatoni, capellini, bucatini, whole wheat or gluten free penne. You can add homemade meatballs, sausage or chicken for a small additional fee. Then you can choose from several pasta sauces like house made marinara, olive oil and garlic, rich alfredo, creamy tomato vodka, fresh basil walnut pesto, carbonara sauce or Bolognese. If you are in the mood for a steak they offer a 14 oz NY Strip (Certified angus beef, grilled to perfection and served with fried onions and their home made steak sauce. Unless
you feel more like traditional Italian food you could go with chicken or veal marsala. Whatever you choose (and trust me, you really can’t go wrong with ANYTHING they serve), you need to make sure to save room for dessert, even an after dinner cocktail, or craft beer. Save some space for the Banana Cream Pie! It was pure heaven on a plate. We also tried the Tiramisu that was like a taste of Italy. I will come back and have both again! When Tim and I arrived at the Pascales Italian Bristro we were immediately greeted by the charming hostess and seated in the cozy dining room. The first thing I noticed continued on pg 31

Of course the author is Lyman Frank Baum, and while we’re all familiar with movie based on his book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, there is so much more about this fascinating writer that I never knew until I sat down with Kathleen Sorbello Di Scenna, Executive Director, The Lyman Frank Baum Foundation, Inc. But first things first: the reason she got in touch with me is because the Foundation is launching an effort near and dear to the heart of anyone who loves books and writing: a Writers Program. The object of it is to help writers from the CNY area, particularly those who write in genres similar to L. Frank Baum’s, get started, get critiqued, edited, and ultimately pubL. I thought I had read them all, including a couple of my favorites, Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz, and Ozma of Oz, but I had no idea that the man was so prolific. Then Kathleen went on to explain that I didn’t know the half of it - or better put, the tenth of it. The writer was responsible for hundreds of works, including 55 novels in total, plus four “lost works”, 83 short stories, over 200 poems, an unknown number of scripts, and many miscellaneous writings, including a form of “augmented reality,” which included film, actors, and live music. Here’s another surprise: when Baum and his illustrator, William Denslow, approached George Hill & Co., in Chicago (Baum’s publisher) with the first in the beloved children’s series, they were prepared for the answer: “No.” And they were

prepared with a plan: they would front the money to publish the book themselves if Hill would market it. When, several months later, Baum - upon the urging of his wife - went to Hill to see if there were any royalties, he was given a check which he assumed would be pocket change, folded it without looking, and tucked it in his pocket, forgetting about it until his wife, the estimable Maud, asked him about it. He, again without looking, handed it over, and she let out a shriek. $3000 in royalties - at the time, 1900, Above: Original was a princely sum. Much like the story itself, Baum’s tale of the “humbug” wizard that is a tale within a tale (and characters within characters) Baum borrowed much of his story from the people and events of his own life and times. Baum, with his peripatetic career, is most likely the model for his Wizard. Born in Chittenango (which holds its yearly festival), he was raised in Mattydale on a beautiful estate called Rose Lawn. He and wife Maud lived on Onondaga Street in Syracuse for a time, and while they lived in many places over the years, there is an enduring legacy here in the Central New York area. There is oh, so much more - curiouser, and curiouser! And you will have at
least one opportunity to learn more as the Foundation presents a small event called Munchkins Remembered - Anniversaries, Authors and Autographs. To be held at the War Memorial in Syracuse, Saturday September 19 from 10am to 6pm, the event will feature costumes, displays, munchkin memories (the actors recalling their experiences on film), and the unveiling of The Lyman Frank Baum Writer’s Series. It’s mascot is (H)ighly (M)agnified Professor Wogglebug (T) hourghly (E)ducated. “We would like,” Kathleen explained, “to both bring in CNY authors (like Baum was) and to help foster and empower new book writers as well as support those who have already published works, offering help from beginning to end of a work and money provided to get the work published in the event a publisher cannot be obtained.” Individuals and organizations offering related goods and services are invited to buy tables ($30 each, draped and set up). Kathleen reminded me that since Baum wrote a little bit of everything, and did a little bit of everything from acting to dry goods, it would be

Exercise & Fitness by JENNIFER NASTASI GUZELAK
Have a Ball While You Work Out You’ve probably noticed when you joined your local gym that there were all kinds of balls (shapes, sizes and colors). I’m sure you’ve seen them aimlessly rolling around the gym, or sitting all by themselves in a corner somewhere. They are an underestimated, under used tumbleweed that get used more as a giant basketball than for exercises. Using an exercise ball can be a remarkably beneficial way of improving muscle tone and balance. It’s also a valuable tool to add variety to your workouts while targeting different muscles. If you like to work out at home, purchasing an exercise ball is a rather cheap investment for your exercise equipment buck. It’s an incredibly versatile piece of exercise equipment, it doesn’t take up much space and it can be purchased at a very low cost. If you are someone that gets bored easily, using an exercise ball will be the perfect addition to your workouts! The ball allows you to switch things up or do a variation of an exercise so you don’t have to repeat the same workout over and over again. Why do you think personal trainers love to use them so much with their clients? There’s always another level, a way to make an exercise harder or a new exercise to be learned. You can use an exercise ball to do something as simple as stretch your muscles or you can use it to do an abdominal exercise (basic or advanced). Champion’s member June Bernard, (as shown in the picture) is doing a basic crunch on a sixty five centimeter resistance ball. She has enough support from the ball on the low back to do the crunch, but enough instability to give her abs a great workout. Exercise ball abdominal crunches primarily target the rectus abdominis. This muscle group is responsible for flexing the lumbar spine. Also targeted are the transverse abdominis, which are used to compress the rib cage and are important for stabilization of your core.

Champions Fitness Center personal trainer Mike Bidwell. He is doing a medicine ball pushup.
Take a look at the photo of Champions Fitness Center personal trainer Mike Bidwell. He is doing a medicine ball pushup. The offset hand position forces his shoulders, chest, and core to stabilize his body while he does the pushup. The side the ball is on works through a longer range of motion, increasing muscle stimulation. Doing any variation of a pushup with a medicine ball makes the exercise more difficult and the instability makes your core muscles work harder than they would if you were just doing a basic pushup on the floor. continued on pg 29

sound waves that travel through the sea. We maintain our sense of place in a crowd through our propriocentric sense originating in our vestibular system. Our vestibular system is in the inner ear. The vibration based vestibular system of animals, and we are animals, evolved before the brain. We feel our own energy or should. When we don’t, we lose perspective. We lose ourselves. In his book “The Brain’s Way of Healing,” Dr. Norman Doidge describes the use of vibration and music to rewire base circuitry in the brains of people with communication problems. Dr. Doidge writes about Alfred Tomatis, a young man with problems who followed his intuition about how his and perhaps others’ problems related to sound. Alfred Tomatis was born the two and half months premature child of a stressed, tightly corseted, teenage mother in early 1900’s France. Like preemies

today, Tomatis entered a world of loud hospital noise, intrusive tubes and cold metal all before his brain was developed enough to process and help him cope with the intrusion. Nathan Doidge writes that most of an infant’s biological systems are ready to operate two weeks prior to a normal birth date. The ear and vestibular systems, however, reach their full development halfway through gestation. As gestation continues through its second half, the child begins to experience the world through the mother’s vibrations, especially her voice. A healthy life involves good vibrations. Tomatis theorized that by treating hypersensitive, uncommunicative patients with progressively differing sounds, he might restore the natural progression of vibrations the person missed when the person’s earlier development was disrupted. Doidge’s chapter about Tomatis includes fascinating accounts while acknowledging that some doctors considered Tomatis’s approach to be quackery. Tomatis’s work does not resonate as quackery with me. Vibes matter. Dr. Doidge writes, “Our first contact with existence is enclosed within the vibrations of our mother’s heartbeat, the tide of her breathing and the music of her voice, its melody and rhythm, even without our knowing the meaning of her words. Such longing as this engenders remains with us forever.” As I write all of this now amid heavy, humid late August air, the darkness vibrating with the hum of crickets, I remember a ticking clock in a sock placed next to our first puppy, Max. Tonight’s air vibrates with sound yet feels peacefully silent.

Get Yourself To The Fair continued from pg 12
before and after the Fair that you can overindulge on your favorite fair food. Are you on some “diet” you have to adhere to rigidly to get results or do you have a “lifestyle” that allows you to go buck wild on the deep fry but then rein it in the next day. Why would you go to the fair and look for a salad? That’s not just silly its insulting! I couldn’t find a green salad so I had to settle for the Blooming Onion!? People Please! Now, there is one caution about the Fair. If you are over 50 you are crazy to go on any of those vomitorium rides. You have had your brain jostled and giggled around enough already...don’t add insult to injury. Go ahead and do the Ferris Wheel and try your luck at one of the squirt gun games but avoid all the upside down, back and forth stuff if you want to stay out of the nursing home. So, overall the New York State FOOD & Fair is good for your health. I will pit DRINK the walking against the fair food any Reserve Your Party SPECIALS day…the secret of course is to make it any day...any one day…not every Chicken, Steaks, Wraps, Salads, Pizza, day! Have a Ball While You Work Out continued from pg 24
The Bosu Ball
A Bosu ball is a balance board that can be used with either side up. Both sides of it, the inflatable dome or the flat plastic surface, provide different challenges for your muscles. Not only do you strengthen your major muscles such as your quadriceps, hamstrings, biceps and pectorals with the Bosu, but the unstable surface also strengthens the smaller, stabilizing muscles. This improves overall strength. The stabilizers keep your knees from giving out during a squat, your elbows from collapsing during a pushChampion’s member Kathy See standing on the flat up and your ankles from side of the Bosu ball. rolling during a lunge. If you’re looking to tone your legs and challenge your body with something new, give Bosu ball squats a try! This kind of squat will utilize an incredible amount of stabilizing muscles and is an excellent way to work all of the muscles in the upper legs and your core. It’s a lot harder than it looks because it requires a lot of control and balance. Take a look at Champion’s member Kathy See who is standing on the flat side of the Bosu ball. To increase the intensity of the exercise, she’s holding a seven pound medicine ball out in front of her body. Anytime you use more of your body’s muscles at one time, you’re getting more out of your workout (and your personal trainer).
Follow the instructions below to learn how to do Bosu ball squats: • Grab a Bosu ball and put the ball on the ground, leaving the flat surface up. • Slowly place one foot at a time on the Bosu ball and stand up straight. • Slowly lower to a squat position by lowering your butt down and activating your quads. • Using your quads, hamstrings, and glutes, raise up to a standing position. • Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions. Did You Know?
Did you know that even when you are just sitting on a resistance ball; it engages the body’s stabilizer muscles? This is because you need to use your abdominal and back muscles to keep your balance on the ball. So, the next time you’re at the office or home studying for an upcoming exam, try using a ball for a chair! Hey, every little bit counts.
The Rule of Thumb
The rule of thumb is; the further away the ball is from the core of your body, the more difficult maintaining your balance will be. For example, when doing a pushup on a resistance ball, putting the ball underneath your upper legs makes doing the push-up much easier because the ball is closer to your core. If you want to make the exercise more difficult, all you have to do is roll the ball out towards your feet so it’s further away from the center of your body. Now, maintaining your balance is going to be much more of a challenge.
In Conclusion:
Have a ball when you work out! There’s really no finish line when you use one. They can be used for low-impact aerobic exercise, stretching and all kinds of different strength training workouts. Working out with an exercise ball takes traditional strength training to a whole new level, and it’s an amazing balance-training tool. So, don’t stare at it, turn your nose up to it, or kick it across the gym. Pick up that gym ball and get to work! 3. When All Else Fails, Stick to Mascara
um mer!
Do you really need anything else to look alive? Not really. Find your perfect mascara and in a pinch, that’s really all you need.
4. More Expensive Isn’t Always Better
I have my fair share of luxury beauty products, yet I still find myself wearing my drugstore liquid liner every single day. Sometimes when something works, the price doesn’t always reflect it’s true value. Prestige brands make some great stuff, but don’t overlook the budget-friendly products.
5. Do NOT Over-Shampoo
My friends like to tell me they have to shower every single day in order to keep their hair from getting oily, but little do they know that showering is what makes their hair produce more oil. Stripping the hair too often causes an over-production of oils that leads to greasy hair. So space out your washes and invest in some dry shampoo.

Your eyes are the most sensitive part of your face and the skin around them can get really irritated if you don’t take care of it. By slathering on some eye cream before bed, you’ll wake up feeling like a new person.
7. Less Is More When It Comes to Fragrance
Have you ever had a roommate who sprays way too much perfume and leaves you gagging? Me too. Please, use your fragrance sparingly. We can smell you from over here.
8. SPF – Always
I try to incorporate a moisturizer with SPF into my everyday makeup routine to keep myself protected even during the little time I end up spending in the sun each day. After all the terrifying statistics I’ve read about sun damage, I can’t go without it.
9. Water is Your Best Friend
Whenever I see my skin is a little dull and in need of a boost, I know a drink of water will help me out. Just like you need to keep your skin moisturized, your whole body needs hydration to keep you looking your best.
10. Please Don’t Bite Your Nails
I’ll let you in on a secret – this is a huge pet peeve of mine. Not only are you ruining your nails and your cuticles, you are sticking the germiest part of your body into your mouth. Your manicure will look terrible AND you’ll probably get sick. It’s a lose-lose situation.

Pascales Italian Bristro continued from pg 21
was the view! It was a perfectly manicured golf course view out of every window. We were introduced to the owner Neil, who’s been in the restaurant business for years! He gave us a tour of all the rooms and outdoor space that the restaurant occupies. He said they can accommodate private parties from 10 to 600. The impressive part of that is parking is never an issue! They have over 600 parking spaces. Our server Hannah immediately brought a loaf of freshly baked crusty white and whole grain breads to the table (Baked in house). She told us about the specialty drinks, wines and craft beer choices. Tim ordered the Linguini with white clam sauce. We were already getting full when our crispy and fresh salads topped with homemade balsamic dressing arrived. For an entrée I ordered a personal favorite shrimp riggies (Spicy tomato cream, locatelli cheese and cherry peppers). Tim said his linguini with clam sauce had more clams than he’s ever had before and hands down the best he’s ever had! We decided to finish off the meal by ordering the Tiramisu cake and Banana Cream pie. It was the perfect end to a delicious meal! The bottom line is that if you are looking for a great meal, prepared fresh and using the best ingredients you need to go to Pascales Italian Bristro today!

Vidiots by BRIAN MILLER
HOT PURSUIT The “Buddy Flick” has been a staple of the action-comedy genre for decades. Without fail, the odd couple pairing features one character who is on the straight-and-narrow, while the other is the goofy, hard-edged foil. In the end, they overcome all obstacles, and despite their many differences, end up as the best of friends. Starring Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara, HOT PURSUIT is the latest entry in this beleaguered category. Witherspoon plays Cooper, a woman who grew up in the back of her father’s police car, and dreamed of following in his legendary footsteps. While she is indeed an officer of the law, she is relegated to basement, after her work in the field resulted in little more than a punchline to an endless barrage of jokes. Vergara, on the other hand, is Daniella Riva, a hot-tempered, fast-talking bride of a gangster who is set to testify in court against his former business associates. When Cooper rides along to pick up the Riva’s and escort them into protective custody, things go terribly wrong. The two women stand as the only survivors of an assassination attempt. After escaping, they become the subject of a nationwide manhunt, and are considered prime suspects in the carnage that unfolded in the mansion. Though they couldn’t be more different, they have to band together to not only flee from the bad guys, but to also prove their innocence. HOT PURSUIT is, without a doubt, an unparalleled disaster. Reducing two very talented women into hollow incarnations of themselves, each line of dialogue is painfully unfunny. Each and every set-up has been done, each with better results than this. It’s uncomfortable to watch, and it is difficult to comprehend how this production was seen through until completion. Witherspoon, who has recently delivered top-notch turns in INHERENT VICE, WILD, and MUD, is tragically miscast. At this point, it feels foolish to watch her languish as a mystified and clueless lunk. Vergara, who has earned multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for her role on TV’s MODERN FAMILY, is unlikable and obnoxious from start to finish. Her lines fall consistently flat, and you can’t help but wonder how this movie went so horribly wrong. What seemed like a perfect marriage on paper ends up as a horribly forgettable and laughless venture.
CITIZENFOUR There are few subjects that are as polarizing to the American public as that of Edward Snowden. Some consider the man a hero, while others view him as one of the biggest traitors our nation has ever known. Regardless of what side of the fence you find yourself, it is impossible not to be enthralled by the Oscar winning documentary CITIZENFOUR. By now, you’ve likely seen a number of news stories on Snowden, and you may have seen some intrerviews with the controversial whistleblower. Unless you have seen Laura Poitras’ stunning documentary, however, you haven’t seen the full story. continued on pg 40

CITIZENFOUR continued from pg 36
When Poitras was contacted by Snowden, she had no idea the power of the story that was being dropped at her feet. Snowden stated that he had information to share with her, but they had to meet in person, and that his revelations may place them all in harm’s way. Poitras, who was at the helm of the controversial doc THE OATH, realized that this was an opportunity of a lifetime, and felt that it was her duty to share Snowden’s tale with the world. Again, if you set your personal feelings aside, CITIZENFOUR is one of the most revelatory documentaries that has been produced in years. Rather than a simple summary of what Snowden’s actions entailed, the documentarian walks the viewer through each revelatory step. The film, in essence, is a collection of interviews between Snowden, Poitras, and investigative journalists Glen Greenwald and Ewen MacAskill. In a hotel room in Hong Kong, Snowden provides a countless number of classified documents and programs that shed led on the extent of the NSA’s ability to monitor virtually every aspect of the lives of American citizens. From phone calls to internet

searches, there isn’t a whole lot that NSA can’t see, according to Snowden. This, of course, raises important questions as to the personal liberties and freedoms (in relation to privacy) that our citizen’s take for granted. More importantly, it makes the public ask themselves if they are willing to compromise their personal privacy and in attempt to curb the threat of terrorism. The Edward Snowden seen in the film is a far different person than the one that had been seen in previous stories and interviews. In his prime-time interview with Brian Williams in May of 2014, Snowden came across as smug and unlikable. As a result, at least for me, it was difficult to separate the man from the content he was sharing, thereby affecting the way I felt about his illegal confessions. In the documentary, however, he seemed far less polished, and much more relatable. The judgments made on whether his decisions were heroic or treacherous are much more difficult to pinpoint in this particular setting. Whether what he did was right or wrong is a matter of opinion, but within the confines of the hotel room, the story isn’t so much about Snowden himself, as it is about the extent in which the American public’s privacy has been compromised. This is what makes CITIZENFOUR such an incredible film, and the reason why it is truly one of the most important documentaries ever produced.

Computers & the Web by NANCY ROBERTS
Do You Call Them Grey Hats? The Ashley Madison hack has no doubt sent many people running for cover and left many questions in its trail. For those who have been too busy with life to have followed the story: Ashley Madison, whose parent company also owns a site that hooks prosperous men up with needy, willing women (“Established Men”), is a site that advocates extramarital affairs - and will connect users with one another because “Life is Short. Have An Affair.”
Of course, there was a price for the service. Now, it appears, there is an even bigger price - the outing of the users, including not just names and emails, but credit cards information, photos, and private - frequently explicit - chats and fantasies. Why? Apparently the hackers didn’t like cheating. They offered Ashley Madison the option of shutting down operations, but since negative publicity had worked so well in the past (the site tried to buy Super Bowl spot time, but was refused, and the ensuing publicity got them millions of hits) they figured they’d go for it again. I guess. A feature of the story that bothered me: the number of unlikely people and organizations’ email addresses that were involved. Someone did an unscientific study of the percentage of people coming from various colleges, particularly “religious” colleges. Needless to say, it proved the point the analyst was trying to make. But I began to wonder: what was the ultimate point of the hack, and were the culprits real, or setups?
SUE CANO
Was our Lucky Winner for the DayAt the Spa/Night on the Town Contest. She chose: Santangelo’s Restaurant for Dinner with a relaxing day at Miracle Nails and will arrive in style in a limo from Express Limousine. WITH CENTRAL NEW YORK
Photo does not represent actual winners.
Apparently, the hackers hadn’t asked for money or any form of blackmail; they simply asked that the site be shut down. Would a list of “famous” (think of Josh Duggar, the “19 Children and Counting” son who was already in trouble for pubescent interest in touching younger girls) clients increase the odds that the people at Ashley Madison would be more or less likely to shut it down? Could the emails and other details have been a purchased list added to the real list and then released to up the embarrassment factor, particularly when you consider that .gov and .vatican (that’s not really the email extension, but you get the drift) were included on that list? Perhaps of most importance to all of us is: what does all this mean to me, and is there any such thing as “secure?” The simplest answers: a lot and not really. There have always been hacks of credit card-rich databases, like stores, for example. But odds are a retail store would, once upon a time, not have been on as high an alert for a data breech as would an online entity, such as a bank or online service that required payment. We’ve all been warned time and again to change our passwords often, and not to store them where they could be accessed. But would we have expected that our doctor’s offices, and our friendly gas station would now be prime targets for data thieves? Given that you’re handing a ton of personal information over to databases every day, to your doctor’s office, at the gas pump - and that you have little to no control over what they do to protect that data - the issue isn’t as simple as being careful with strong passwords and when and to whom you give out your credit card information. Another old story that seems to come around again - and again, and again - is the phishing scenario. No longer so unsophisticated as to send a silly-looking subject line like “Naked Pictures of Your Girlfriend,” phishers now opt for spoofing the email of a friend, or worse, really using the email of a friend by getting into said friend’s computer via a Trojan Horse (you download a seemingly innocent program or file, which comes complete with a nasty bit of code that deploys itself on your computer and gathers up your important data) to entice you into opening an email that comes complete with its own “payload” of malware. Spoofing email addresses - and making them look like the real thing - is surprisingly easy. There are many programs that will capture images, even images that are designed not to be captured, from a legitimate website. So “branding” an email is quite simple to do. Next, you need a SMTP server (a server that can send email) and some mailing software. If you have a webhost, you probably have a SMTP server (a webhost is simply a server that houses your website, for example). Then get some software like PHP Mailer, add some “from” and “to” addresses (in other words, the “from” does not have to be legitimate), and send. As far as the recipient is concerned, it looks like they’re getting a real email from a real, honest source. In truth, there is a never-ending story of cops and robbers that goes on with the White Hat hackers and the Black Hat hackers. Each time the Black Hats get caught or stopped, they find another way around the security; every time they come up with a new way to get around it, the White Hats find a way to stop them. And many of them are trying to think one step ahead - think like a crook, but don’t be one. But this whole Ashley Madison story puts yet another spin on that tale: what do you call a group of hackers who are trying to force an enterprise engaged in something tawdry at best to stop what it’s doing - and using dirty tricks to get them to do so?
