Getting to Know Sean Fried Having been in the CNY area for only about 2 years, Sean Fried is a fairly recent transplant from Chicago. And since that time he’s become one of the busiest players in town. Sean has carved his niche in the scene by tirelessly networking. He’s compiling a huge repertoire of songs spanning numerous genres. Sean has actually been dubbed the “Utility Guy” by a local producer after the producer noted him playing both bass and guitar with various acts. And as of this writing, Sean has been playing professionally for 32 years. He is a veteran of the bar scene as well as having played, recorded and toured with award-winning indie acts. And, now he’s here right in our backyard. New blood. And he’s busy. There’s a reason for that and that’s why I’m introducing him to you. Chuck Schiele: Hi Sean. Thanks for taking some time to chat with Table Hopping. Sean Fried: Thanks, Chuck. It’s my pleasure. Thank you. CS: Let’s get started by asking how you got your start in music? SF: My entire family is musical. It’s all I’ve ever really wanted to do. I learned guitar at 14. Most people think of me as a lead guitar player. That said, when I was 15 or so, my father said, “If you want to work, play bass, everyone plays guitar, hardly anyone plays bass.” As soon as the guys in high school found OPEN 24 HOURS A DAY • 7 DAYS A WEEK Would your mama feed you anything but the best?

out I had a bass, they were fighting over me. My first paying gig was in 10th grade, playing our high school homecoming dance. The sound man at that gig was a guy named Eric McMann. He was in one of the biggest bands in town. Eric came up to me after the show and complimented my Rickenbacker bass and said I had “star power.” He hooked my high school band up with slots opening for his group in the clubs. I eventually joined his band as the lead guitar player a few years later. We wound up living in a recording studio/ farm. We made 2 charted indie records and later a country record. He is still pretty well known in the Chicagoland area. That band was called the Crickle continued on pg 4

Getting to Know Sean Fried continued from pg 2 … for all you people who like to Google things. The earliest years of my “career” were spent as a bass player and later a guitar player in oldies bands. I’m probably dating myself but back then, oldies bands were very lucrative. I even played bass in a Beatles tribute band. I had a 63 Hofner that I bought for $350, I later sold it for $500 and thought I was a genius … CS: You are somewhat new to the area. What brought you to Syracuse? SF: I lived in CNY as a kid. I moved to Chicago when I was about 9. Later, still living in Chicago, I went through a horrible divorce. That led to a 3 year streak where I kind of MIDDLE-EASTERN & GREEK quit life and drank morbidly. I came back here to straighten my life out and be around what little family I still had left. Sort of a new start. CS: Who do you listen to for inspiration? SF: People who know me are amazed that I listen to almost zero FULL BAR • CRAFT BEER • CATERING & BANQUET ROOM music. The radio in my last truck was broken for HAPPY HOUR DAILY 5-7PM 10 years. That said, Keith Richards is my greatest hero. I used to want to EVERY OTHER grow up to be Keef. country music. I love most old school blues, jazz and country. In this area, I love Savannah Harmon. I love Keith Ford. He has a song that is so good it’s made me cry. I like what Irv Lyons and his guys do. I don’t know what you call their style, but it is cool. I like your band. You were the first act I saw when I came to town. I kid you not. CS: Your goal was to get busy. And you certainly are. What’s the secret? Who else do you work with? SF: I’ll play with anyone who will hire me (call me people!). My main band is Lonesome Crow, but in the last few months I’ve done gigs with: Matt Chase & Thunder Canyon, Savannah Harmon, JD & Rollin’ South, Keith Ford, Jillian Leigh and Kent Proctor (Bear) from PEP. My goal is to gig 6 nights a week. I am always looking for gigs and people to play them with. I’ve started doing my own bookings and I actually often have more dates than I can find people to play them with. CS: Tell us about some of the favorite highlights in your music career. SF: Hearing myself on the radio is still a gas. It is pretty validating to hear your guitar coming across WLS or some other big station. Rolling into college towns where our record was #1 on the college station in that town could be pretty amazing. Tommy Tutone sharing his pizza with me at a gig was

hilarious. He was the nicest guy. He signed my guitar and even apologized for not having a better marker. Since I’ve been in CNY, playing the OnCenter with Savannah Harmon for the Carrie Lazarus TV show was really cool. CS: Tell us some funny war stories. SF: I have almost no real war stories. It has been a pretty cool journey so far. I only wish there were more of it packed into every day. Music has been very very good to me. There are some fun groupie stories but perhaps this is not the forum. The biggest problem with the CNY CS: If you could change one scene is all the people saying there thing —an old episode, a factor in is no scene! the scene, something you wish … what would it be? SF: You know what? It happened not too long ago. I joined in on a big FB thread about a certain CNY area agent regarding ethics/skimming issues. I was right with, and in what, I said but I should not have done it publicly. The agent pressured his acts and venues to stop hiring me. I won the battle but lost the war. It estranged me from one of my favorite acts and cost me a lot of money in lost gigs. Stay out of scene politics and don’t air dirty laundry in public. Lesson learned. continued on pg 6

Getting to Know Sean Fried continued from pg 5 As far as changing the scene. My observation is that CNY needs to believe in itself a little more and we should all be helping each other make things great as opposed to griping about what maybe isn’t so great. CNY seems pretty cool to me. CS: I agree about believing more. Skepticism is for … for … I don’t get skepticism, I guess. Anyway … What do you have to say to the budding musician? SF: 20% is talent, the rest is work ethic. CS: AMEN! SF Get business cards. Be nice. Almost all the most successful people around here are also the most friendly and helpful. It takes nothing to be CNY needs to believe in itself a little more and we should all be helping nice, to show up on time, to return texts and phone calls, to be ethical. The biggest problem with the CNY said, learn to play bass. scene is all the people saying there is no scene! There is plenty of work here if CS: What are your thoughts on the CNY music scene, itself? you can play a little and are out there hustling. There is some sick talent in town. I recently saw Skunk City and these guys called the Spring Street Family Band; both were so friggin’ good, I almost threw up. Did you ever see an act and just know you are getting your ass kicked??? CS: So, what’s on the horizon? What’s coming up that you’re looking forward to? SF: I just started working with a crazy good, young singer/ guitar player named Payton Bird. Some people kind of know her, she has been singing guest spots in CNY since she was like 11 years old. She is now old enough to start doing actual gigs. I hate to throw it around lightly but she could wind up being the “next big thing” around here. Beyond that, I want keep playing and see how far one can go in this area. Thunder Island “The most fun in the sun, Where you meet everyone, Here on Thunder Island!”

The kiddie pool is lined with parent-friendly lounge chairs.

Maybe you remember that jingle from years past when summer included a trip to Thunder Island in Fulton, New York? New owners Ron and Elizabeth Falise want to be sure it’s your destination of choice this summer —and all year round— for parties, banquets, events, picnics, and water park fun for the entire family. We took the less than half-hour drive from Syracuse to the park on the sunny first day of summer as the team was setting out lounge chairs, checking pool temperatures,

touching up plantings, and making sure the park was looking both the way you remember, and a brighter, fresher, newer “wow!” as the summer season gets under way. But Ron Falise, who met us at the park, explained that though he and his wife/ business partner had taken ownership of the park last fall, this was far from the first of their events. Dozens of weddings, corporate events, and private events have already been hosted in the Oasis banquet hall, just one part of the entertainment complex, which now includes the banquet hall, park, water park, miniature golf course, go-cart track and zip line!

Wonder Woman After the critical failures BATMAN V SUPERMAN and SUICIDE SQUAD, the DC multiverse was desperate for a project that would help them garner the same type of respect and reverence that has been bestowed upon Marvel. Virtually every film in the Marvel cannon has been a smashing success with critics and audiences alike, and as a result, its popularity and profitability has been staggering. BATMAN V SUPERMAN and SUICIDE SQUAD were moderately successful at the box office, but neither found a way to elicit the same type of passion in its fan base as new modern staples such as IRON MAN, CAPTAIN AMERICA, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, and THE AVENGERS. There are a number of reasons why WONDER WOMAN could have failed, and if it had, it would have been a crushing blow to the future of DC. Instead, Patty Jenkins’ film, starring the charming and fierce Gal Gadot, is exactly what the multiverse needed. Regardless of your opinion of BATMAN V SUPERMAN, there was little room to argue that Ms. Gadot’s Wonder Woman was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise lackluster venture. Though her screen time was limited, she made the most of it, and was easily the most memorable character in a the

largely forgettable production. Her appearance provided a great deal of hope and optimism, yet it remained to be seen how she would be able to carry an entire film and franchise. WONDER WOMAN begins where SUPERMAN V BATMAN left off, with Diana (Gadot) going through a suitcase delivered by Bruce Wayne. Inside the case is a black-and-white photograph of her standing with a group of men during World War I. From here, we travel back in time to learn the origins of Wonder Woman. Raised on the beautiful island of Themyscira to learn the art of war, compassion, and strength, her land is filled with fierce women warriors. They believe that it is their job to be on guard for WELCOME SYRACUSE NATIONALS when Aries, the god of war, was to return to earth to destroy them. We eat more ice cream, drink more lemonade, and sip temperature than the more beer. The thirstier we get, the more we crave a cool one. Unfortunately, those American taste buds are days at the beach, a BBQ or on the back deck can also mean cold beer gone warm accustomed to. While it quickly. While it might be tempting to drink beer freezing cold, what some beer may seem warm, the cordrinkers fail to realize is that beer isn’t supposed to be served out of a frosted mug, rect serving temperature nor should there be ice cubes (in a plastic bag!) floating in a pitcher. Drinking beer depends on the particular The best summer beers that quench my thirst at a very cold temperature takes away flavor. India pale ales, bitters and brown ales are also best served at warmer temperatures compared to hefeweizens, lagers and pilsners, best served from 39° to 45° F. How cold is too cold? While I don’t expect you to carry a thermometer with you when you drink, if your beer is so cold it’s practically flavorless, my best guess is it’s probably below 39° F. The best summer beers that quench my thirst and keep me cool are goses (e.g. Sierra Nevada Otra Vez), sours (Dogfish Head Sea Quench Ale), Berliner weisses (Ithaca’s Cayuga Cruiser), fruit beers (Middle Ages’ Apricot Ale) pilsners (Lagunitas’ PILS), and Mexican type lagers (Grupo Modelo’s Modelo Especial, Negra Modelo, Oskar Blues Beerito). These beers are easygoing, tasty and refreshing – perfect for the summer. While IPAs can pack a hefty hoppy punch, there are others that are delightfully smoother with a wonderful hop presence – such is the case with Founder’s All Day IPA and Stone’s Go To IPA. If you still crave something very cold to drink, why not choose an iced tea, water with lemon, or a slushy? Once you’ve cooled down enough, then drink a beer. Let your mood guide you to what kind of beer you want to drink; then, quench your thirst and give your taste buds a treat to the wonderful craft. Santangelo’s Restaurant Central New York is home of fantastic Italian cuisine, thanks to amazing restaurants staffed by dedicated families sharing their traditional recipes with hungry Central New Yorkers! There is truly no better example of this than Santangelo’s Restaurant, a CNY favorite since 1986. I can only describe Santangelo’s in this way: The entrees are mouthwatering, the desserts are decadent, and the service is impeccable. Santangelo’s is conveniently located at 673 Old Liverpool Rd. in Liverpool and they accept reservation at 315-457-4447. They are open for lunch and dinner Monday through Thursday from 11:30 am to 10 pm, Friday from 11:30 am to 11 pm, and dinner on Saturday from 4 pm to 11 pm and Sunday from 4 pm to 9 pm. For more than 30 years the Santangelo family has been living the American Dream; they opened a place to feed customers their Grandma’s recipes and staffed it with their loving family. They have grown over the years thanks to their commitment to serving delicious food with fresh ingredients, dedicated staff (of family and employees whom they consider family) and, of course, their loyal customers. What really sets them apart is their love of what they do; you can taste it in every single bite. Whether it be Guilo in the kitchen, Maria taking her time to work out a menu perfect

Beauty & Fashion by Annika Hoiem

Staying Cool, Comfortable, & Confident During the summer months, shedding clothes in favor of showing skin is widely encouraged. While comfort in the heat is key, there seems to be an unhealthy amount of attention directed to physical appearance rather than physical, emotional, and mental health. For women especially, this pressure to dress wearing less is immense. This in turn puts a focus on our external traits rather than our internal selves. Dieting for purely aesthetic reasons is detrimental and is a set up for failure, yet is often assumed as an unspoken requirement in this day and age. Rather than succumbing to these pressures, women should feel freedom to relax in being themselves. While a triangle bikini may be a source of pride for one woman, it may put an unhealthy strain on another. Modesty can provide a kind of freedom, empowering women by showcasing who they are rather than how they look. Clothes should never be something to hide in or to hide from. They should be an expression of you than enables you to do what you love and enjoy. Oftentimes dressing becomes an act of looking left and right for direction,

Bloodline Season 3 Upon its inception, Netflix was a novelty that provided an interesting alternative to a trip to the video store. With an expansive catalog and an easy method by which to rent and return DVD’s, it guaranteed that I could track down a copy of ERASERHEAD without scouring the entire CNY landscape. Flash forward to present time, and Netlix is now a powerhouse. Not only is there a seemingly endless array of films and shows available, but their original content now ranks amongst the best that the entertainment world has to offer. One such production is BLOODLINE. The dark family drama only lasted for three seasons, yet it delivered a story of stunning depth and intensity. The final season of BLOODLINE was released at the end of May, effectively bringing the saga of the tortured Rayburn clan to a close. For those who have yet to see the first two seasons, the show tells the tale of a (seemingly) close-knit family who live in the sticky Florida Bloodline-Season 3: B+ Keys. Like any family, the Rayburns are not without their secrets. Most of these revolve around the eldest Rayburn child, Danny (Ben Mendelsohn.) While Robert and Sally’s three other offspring stayed local, the troubled Danny tackled various endeavors elsewhere. Many of these activities were illicit in nature, and as the entire family gathers for a Pier dedication for the Robert and Sally, the siblings hope that Danny will fail to show. Danny, of course, returns for the event, and his arrival changes everyone’s lives forever.

night. There’s an endless number of ways to make this look your own. Dresses keep you cool in the heat, and this style can easily transition from work to a night out with friends.

Blouses:

As temperatures rise, work appropriate outfits become harder to find. You don’t have to swelter for the sake of style. Pair thin blouses over a typical tank to stay covered up, but cool. If that’s too warm, try a loose, patterned blouse with short sleeves. I’m sure every woman has tried on at least one blouse, so this may seem intuitive, but they have been a game changer for me, especially in the summer months.

Regular Lipstick may be too thick for warm temperatures, liquid shades often have just as much color pay-off and lasting power.

Lipstick:

Though traditional lipstick may be too thick for warm temperatures, liquid shades often have just as much color pay-off and lasting power. Check out versions from ColourPop, L’Oreal, and Revlon; all continue to look polished for the majority of the day and are fairly inexpensive. A nice lip color is a simple addition, yet it always seems to boost my spirits.

Dresses keep you cool in the heat, and this style can easily transition from work to a night out with friends.

Dressing for others will leave you feeling uncomfortable, irritated, tired, ashamed, or frustrated, and can even cause you to devalue yourself. When getting dressed think about what pieces make you smile, what flexibility they afford you, what colors make you feel most beautiful, and what cuts enable you to look your best. Don’t feel pressure based on how others are dressing around you; instead be confident in your sense of self and the clothes you wear as an expression of that.

Bloodline Season 3 continued from pg 19 The first season of BLOODLINE was exciting, dramatic, and fresh. The performances by the entire cast were phenomenal, but it was Chandler and Mendelsohn whose turns were most noteworthy, earning Emmy nominations for their turns. Due to these accolades, they helped draw more attention to show, and provided plenty of hope for the future. The second season of BLOODLINE dealt largely with the aftermath of Danny’s return, as the family attempts to stick together as their world crumbles around them. Drawn deep into a web of lies, deceit, and pain, they feign normalcy as closelyguarded secrets threaten to destroy them. Originally, at least in the minds of creators Glenn Kessler, Todd Kessler, and Daniel Zelman, BLOODLINE was going to have a five or six season run. When the announcement was made that Netflix would be canceling the show after its third season, however, it meant that a drastic condensing would have to take place. The result is a program whose final 10 episodes would need to deliver immediate resolutions to numerous story lines and character arcs. You are unlikely to see two other episodes this television season that are more intense than that of the first two episodes in the third season of BLOODLINE. With each one of the siblings reaching a breaking point, they have all come to the realization that their lives have spun wildly out of control. Turning on one another and executing acts of desperation, they each find themselves on the edge of oblivion. In these initial episodes, the gas pedal is planted firmly to the floor, and the story blazes along at an unrelenting pace. While the remaining 8 episodes have their fair share of fireworks, their pacing is much more aligned with the previous installments of the show. That’s not to say they aren’t filled with drama and thrills, but they are a little more reserved than the frenzied events of the first two. In my opinion, BLOODLINE stands alone as the best Netflix series to date. Admittedly, this third and final season does not quite match the same level of greatness as its predecessors, but this was obviously the result of its premature cancellation. There were so many different subplots developed in the preceding seasons, that it was difficult to resolve them all within a 10 episode time frame. The result is a number

The performances by the entire cast were phenomenal, but it was Kyle Chandler and Ben Mendelsohn whose turns were most noteworthy. of disjointed and hurried story lines that failed to receive the time needed to make them work. Even so, as BLOODLINE reached its conclusion, there were a number of sequences that were absolutely spellbinding, and the performances, once again, of the entire cast were beyond reproach. They inhabited the characters with such biting realism and desperation, that it was easy to lose yourself within their gut-wrenching (and largely self-induced) plights. As absurd as it sounds, there were numerous times that I had to remind myself that I wasn’t involved in the Rayburns catastrophes, and I was merely along for the ride. From the shows earliest moments it seemed unlikely that any character was going to reach the finale with love and joy in their hearts, yet the journey was enthralling from the first moment to the last.

Tales from the Vine by Cassandra Harrington

All Vacations Must Come to an End If you ask a winemaker, the term “Vintner Vacation” is a bit of an oxymoron. They’ll likely say that vacations do not exist for winemakers. It is, thankfully, a labor of love. That is not to say that work cannot be enjoyed without the occasional vacation, but rather that “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” So, the team at the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail has come to the rescue. Five winners —three hailing from Pennsylvania, one from Connecticut and one from Vermont— each brought a lucky friend of theirs to experience a bit of what the Trail has to offer. The group spent three days and two nights relishing in the sights and tastes of Cayuga Lake. The Vacation began with a picnic-style lunch on the patio at Knapp’s Vineyard Restaurant. Chef John McNabb and team prepared sriracha chicken salad wraps with tortilla chips and their signature Cayuga Caviar (a delicious vinegary black bean, onion and corn salsa), pomme frittes and an assortment of chilled wines. The Brut was the first bottle finished, and this time it was not my fault! After lunch, tasting room manager Micah walked the group through a tasting, including the signature spirits, Cucumber Vodka and Limoncello. Their time at Knapp concluded with a tour of the vineyard and production facility by longtime winemaker, Steve DiFrancesco. Day one, stop two was to Buttonwood Grove Winery. We lucked out because it was bottling day at the winery. The group got to witness the owner Dave Pittard along with winemaker Susan Passmore and others bottling Dry Riesling. Then, team

The participants were given wines and asked to take notes on the perceived aromas, body, flavors and finish of their wine samples. Then, their assignment was to craft a written description that would make the wine seem appealing to a potential buyer. It was much more difficult than they had imagined, but a very fun experience. Our extremely hot and humid Day One ended early-afternoon and the group disbursed for dinner of their choosing at various local restaurants. Some stayed overnight in the rustic yet modern cabins at Buttonwood Grove Winery while others hung their hats down the road at the new and luxurious Cayuga Lake Cabins. I am told that when they plan their return trips to the Finger Lakes, the cabins will be among their first choice for accommodations. On Tuesday, the group visited Long Point Winery by a scenic boat ride with “Captain DD” via Water to Wine Tours of Ovid, where owner and winemaker, Gary Barletta walked them through a vertical tasting of Cabernet Sauvignon. It was incredibly interesting to see how the different vintages affect the wine, coupled with the amount of time it has spent aging in the bottle. Then, as we were brought back to the shore to catch our boat, we got notification that a storm was hovering over Goose Watch Winery. We had plans to visit for a tasting and to tour the sparkling facility, but for the safety of our guests, we chose not to boat into the storm and went directly to Thirsty Owl Wine Company and its Bistro. After a full tasting, Executive Chef Sean Agate treated everyone to what seemed like

a 15 course meal! On the table upon arrival were “Spreads and Breads” featuring a Tomato Basil, an Olive Tapenade, and a Roasted Garlic Hummus with fresh bread. Next, came a platter presenting an assortment of Muranda Cheese, local from Waterloo, with crackers and seasonal fruits. Then, pinwheel sandwich bites and dill pickles to hold our attention while they prepped the main course, chicken riggies with fresh goat cheese crumbled on top. The meal concluded with vanilla bean ice cream from the Cayuga Lake Creamery over baked apple crisp. With exceptionally full bellies, we were lugged in two trips on the Kubota from the tasting room back to our boat. Our tour concluded as Captain DD dropped us off at the Busy Bee Market and Cottages for the evening. We were well received by the gracious owner, Vera McLafferty, who made sure everyone was comfortably checked into their overnight accommodations. She and her team had prepped a family-style picnic dinner for us to enjoy later that evening. Most of the group stayed in four quaint waterfront cottages, and the rest in the Busy Bee Lodge which comfortably sleeps eleven and overlooks the lake and the rest of the property. Their final day began with an early morning session at the new on premise Yoga Barn and breakfast at the Busy Bee Market. After packing up, the gang headed to Lucas Vineyards. There, they met with mother and daughter team Ruth and Stephanie Lucas, original owners of the oldest winery on Cayuga Lake and some of the founding members of the Wine Trail. Ruth and Stephanie spoke of their experience as winery owners when the industry first emerged and what it has been like to endure all the changes the industry has undergone in their thirty-plus years of business. We were then joined by Stephanie’s husband and their lauded winemaker, Jeff Houck, who offered tasting of his favorites before bringing the group to see some of the oldest vines on the lake, then explained their umbrella trellising system and production practices. Our guests were particularly interested in the history behind the winery and their personal stories that are even conveyed through their marketing and wine labels. Our Vintner Vacation concluded with a tasting at Americana Vineyards, followed by lunch at their Crystal Lake Café. The meal began with charcuterie boards and each person ordered their choice from the menu. My personal recommendations are the Grilled Cheese, which has melted cheddar, gruyere, goat cheese, smoked gouda and tomato on sourdough and the Lamb Burger, with lettuce, tomato, red onion, Kalamata tapenade, rosemary aioli and feta on a roll. Simply. Delicious. Now it’s back to reality for our ten lucky participants of the second annual Vintner Vacation along the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail. I would like to thank all our hosts and everyone who made this program possible. To be notified when the entry period for the 2018 Vintner Vacation has opened, submit your contact information at CayugaVintnerVacation.com. My Mind To Yours

by debra Merryweather

When Memory Returns Outside the courtroom where Bill Cosby was neither convicted nor acquitted of drugging a woman and then using her sexually, Cosby’s supporters greeted him as “Dr. Huxtable,” the fictional physician Cosby portrayed. Multiple women have accused both Cosby the comedian and Cosby the real-world PhD in Education of sedating them with medications ranging from anti-histamines to Quaaludes. Cosby himself has admitted drugging women while still maintaining that any post-sedation sexual contact was consensual. The women, having been drugged, might not remember things clearly, but clearly remember things differently. While entertainment and sports often involve physical manifestations that can be aphrodisiac to some members of the audience at large, educational, therapeutic and spiritual occupations imply the sort of helpfulness and moral excellence that encourages trust. Drugs rob people of consciousness quickly but institutionally rooted and neurochemically reinforced respect for authority figures enable devious and manipulative authority figures and helpers to both shape and steal consciousness gradually, through lies, threats and physical force. Neurons that fire together wire together and memories form in this context. Victims who don’t know they’ve been harmed cannot move on from where they have not yet arrived. Discovering you have lost touch with your own history feels like loss of self. In Trisha Meili’s case, regardless of whether Trisha ever remembers the initial experience of the attack, she knows she was attacked. The Write Stuff by Nancy Roberts

2017 New York Yankees Official Yearbook We’re already well into baseball season (should I have capitalized that?) -so I thought for this month we’d honor the National Pastime with a book about baseball. The problem? I don’t read books about baseball! So this month’s column is by guest reviewer and baseball fan, John J. Sposato. John, you’re up. What’s this? A book review of an annual sport’s yearbook? Yes! Why? Because it’s great reading for the thousands of Yankee fans here in Central New York. It’s not just a yearbook, but the history it represents, the memories it brings back and the optimism it creates for the current season. Did you know that the Yankee logo is the second most recognized trademark in the world, next to Coca Cola? Actually, I don’t know why anyone from this area would be a fan of any other major league baseball team. The Mets maybe, even Washington, but certainly not the Boston Red Sox. Sound a bit prejudiced? Perhaps. Well, yes! (Keep reading, anyway, Boston fans!) First: you must understand that I am not so much a sports fan as I am a team fan. It’s the team that holds my interest and the team I follow (also the Giants —a former Yankee Stadium resident— in the NFL). And let’s face it, nay-sayers: this team has

won 40 American League pennants and 27 World Series –more than any other team in either league and more championships than any other sports franchise in history, so I have no problem giving them praise and their just due. Let me tell you how it all started. As was the case for many baseball fans, I was only 6 years old when I “fell in love.” We would visit my grandparents every Sunday, like all good families of Italian descent. My father’s father always had the Yankee game on the radio and we would listen to Mel Allen, Red Barber and a few years later, my favorite –Phil Rizzuto. This is not just a yearbook, but the As it happens, that year —1956— history it represents, the memories was one of the greatest years in it brings back and the optimism it Yankee history. They were coming creates for the current season. off a defeat from the previous World Series to The Brooklyn Dodgers. OK, I guess it was the Dodgers turn to win one, but now last year was over. In ‘56, Mickey Mantle won the Triple Crown, leading the American League in home runs, runs batted in and batting average, and became MICKEY MANTLE. He was also awarded The Hitchcock Belt for being the most outstanding athlete of the year. And, it was the year that Don Larson pitched his perfect game in the World Series. Becoming a Yankee fan was easy: there was no competition. A few years later, the other two New York teams (the Dodgers & the Giants) vacated The City for the west coast, and there was no Syracuse Chiefs at the time. So as the years went on, my interest grew and when cable came to Syracuse in the 1970’s it was like a dream come true! One could watch just about all the games on WPIX, and not just a Saturday Game of the Week with Dizzy Dean and Pee Wee Reese. It was in 1960 that I purchased my first Yankee Yearbook on my first visit to Cooperstown. I think it cost $.75 and was only about 30 pages long –more like a “sketch” book or an expanded program. I continued to collect them through the decades, maybe missing one or two here and there. It seems I was always in search of back issues that preceded my first purchase; I had very little success. An unfortunate incident made matters worse: over the years I misplaced about a dozen issues of my collection. What to do now? eBay! I soon was able to find and obtain every yearbook since its inception in 1950, and can now boast of having a complete collection (I also have a complete collection of all their World Series programs). As in recent years, the 2017 edition is more of a tome than a yearbook. It’s a 265 page publication full of advertisements, but it has a lot more to offer than that. It contains the basic information about the organization, the hierarchy, the stadium and of course the players and other feature articles. Bios and stats on the players, the manager and coaches are available to read and study. It also discusses the off-season acquisitions and how the club will be better this season and maybe even be capable

If you watched them in recent years you know how frustrating it has been to be a loyal fan, and not get angry. If they fell behind 1-0 the game was over. So in the latter half of last season they revamped the roster and brought up a host of young players to see what they could do. Everyone was astounded with their debuts: hope for 2017. Many years, the edition is a dedication to a great Yankee that has passed away since the last edition, like the 2016 tribute to Yogi Berra, or to an anniversary of a great event or team, or to a recently retired player (Mariano Riviera, Derek Jeter). If there is no honoree, then there is an article of remembrance. This year, the Yankee team of 1927 is featured: “STILL THE STANDARD,” a team against which all great teams are compared, and have yet to surpass. For a true fan, it’s not just going through the current edition that is enjoyable, but perusing the past issues, as well. Doing so brings back great memories of championships and great players. One also remembers the dismal years of recent generations, from 1965-1976 and 1982-1995. And it amazes me just how many players there were and how many that I have forgotten about, or never knew about at all. The history and tradition can entertain for hours. Not a Yankee fan? Don’t take my enthusiasm as boasting (well, maybe a little!). But it’s all meant in good fun –as sports are meant to be. Fans all over the country support their city or regional team, as they should. By all means, seek out your favorite team’s yearbooks, and start a collection of your own! But … don’t you find it telling that no matter what city the Yankees travel, to either league, that they draw the largest crowds of any visiting club and have many of their fans in the stands? It must mean something.

Compete With Yourself All too often we get so busy with the hustle and bustle of “life” that we lose sight of our health and fitness goals. This most often happens because our goals aren’t specific enough. How many times have you heard someone say “I want to lose a few pounds this summer,” or “I really need to stop eating out so much.” This probably isn’t the first time you’ve heard someone say this, and I’m sure it’s not the last! What is the problem with these statements? They are more of a want or a wish than a specific detailed goal. So how do we set specific goals? How do we make a proposal to do something and actually follow through with it? One way is by tapping into the natural competitiveness that we all have. I think we’re all fairly competitive in our own way, right? It’s human nature to be competitive, but don’t try to compete with someone else! Compete with yourself. This should be about you and your goals. So focus on what you need to do to reach them. Whether it is getting to the gym more often, hitting a new PR (personal record), or beating last years’ time in an upcoming race, set specific goals and work towards them each week. Here are a few reasons why you should be competitive with yourself:

competitive with yourself instead of with other people, you don’t have to worry about someone else being better than you or getting there first. You know the personal goals that you’ve set for yourself and you will achieve them when you are ready. Only then will you put in the time, effort and the work that is required to reach them. Use the goals that you have accomplished (there’s nothing more encouraging) as a stepping stone to set and reach new ones.

You Have a Much Healthier Measure Of Your Success

You Know What You Are Capable Of

I’m sure you’ve heard the motto “run your own race.” It’s a fact. -There is always going to be someone that is better than you at something. When you learn to be

It’s human nature to be competitive, but don’t try to compete with someone else! Compete with yourself. This should be about you and your goals. So focus on what you need to do to reach them.

Along with adulthood comes the reality that there are some things that we just suck at. On the other hand, there are some things that we’re very good at, but just

not good enough to be successful at. You know, like becoming an Olympic gold medalist? I’m not saying that you should give up on your dreams, but I am saying that taking a good hard look at yourself gives you an opportunity to assess whether or not those dreams are right for you. Once you do that, you can either make a commitment to do what it takes to make that dream a reality, or you can stop chasing something that ultimately may not be a good fit for you in the long term.

You Embrace New Things

When you’re constantly competing with everyone else, you’re only competing in arenas that other people have set up for you. Sure, you might get to the point where you are winning in those arenas, but those Champions Fitness Center member are the only arenas you’ll ever know. Amber LaNigra. Only when you use yourself as a measure for your success do you open yourself up to the infinite things you could improve on and pursue, the infinite things that might ultimately make you much happier than what everybody else is doing.

SUMMER IS HERE!

You Can Define Your Own Success

People who are truly successful pursue something because it was something they wanted to do and it made them happy, not because someone else wanted them to or because they thought they should. When you let go of people’s expectations and follow whatever it is that makes you happy, you will define your success in a more important way. You will define your success in how you feel, what’s in your heart, and how you choose to live your life.

You Become That Much More Free Of People’s Judgment

When you compete with yourself, you are, essentially, dismissing other people’s expectations of you. Their measures for success are now insignificant. You might find yourself pursuing something that would seem crazy or like a waste of time to someone else, but it doesn’t matter anymore because you aren’t subject to what they think of you. You don’t have to answer to them! At the end of the day you only have to answer to yourself. If you don’t, you will let the most important person down; and that is YOU. Are you working hard enough? Are you doing everything you could possibly do to reach your goals? Only you can answer these questions and holding yourself accountable is everything.

In Conclusion:

You need to ignore what everyone else is doing and achieving. Your life is about breaking your own limits and outgrowing yourself to live YOUR best life. You are not in competition with anyone else; plan to outdo your past, not other people! You should always be looking to challenge yourself in new ways, and when you’re looking inward for that inspiration, you always will. I promise. Stop comparing yourself to everyone else. It doesn’t matter what they’re doing, what shape they’re in, or how they look. This journey you are on is about you and your goals. Compete with yourself and see how much YOU can improve each week. Remember, it’s not always about winning the race, it’s about finishing. Good luck to you!

I have been a personal trainer for over seventeen years and I absolutely love what I do. I honestly feel that I have one of the best jobs out there! Computers & the Web by Nancy Roberts

Liability in the Age of Twitter Many years ago now and thanks to the MP3 compression algorithm first widely used in the early 90s, it became feasible to share audio files (music) via the Internet. Overnight, it seems, file sharing sites were launched. Napster, one of the best known, started up in June of 1999, and by December of that year a lawsuit was filed against the company. In the end, examples were made of some persons who shared music files, claiming hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages – though the bigger fight was finally “lost” in the sense that it’s nearly impossible for the online sharing of music to be eliminated completely, and many bands chose to embrace the publicity and allow an “official” music video to be shared in the hopes of leading to direct download sales. But it remains that what can be done on the Internet theoretically can be sued. The issue of liability for what we “say” online was broached by a lawyer friend in the context of President Trump’s proclivity for taking to Twitter to bypass communication channels of yore and simply get what he has to say right out there himself. The lawyer was suggesting he could be held accountable in a legal sense for his Tweets. We’ll deal with that more complex question in a moment, but this proposition raised another question for me: are we, just “broadcasters” of our opinions, not to

(I’ve wondered for a long time if Sam Elliot cares how his face is used in memes, or if he’d like to get any compensation?) I don’t suppose there’s any problem legally for us, as private citizens, if we help propagate misinformation (aka “Fake News). And, as I learned, opinions are privileged under the law. So, if I post a comment on Facebook or Yelp that the dressing rooms in a local store smell like rat poop, that’s just my opinion. However, if I make a public statement of fact on that same Yelp: “The dressing rooms at XYZ Store are filled with rat poop,” I might have a bigger problem, should XYZ Store a) care to bother suing, and b) be able to identify me. Let’s say that my statements actually led to XYZ being investigated for rat poop in the dressing rooms, and had to shut down continued on pg 36

Liability in the Age of Twitter continued from pg 32 for a day or two, and lost business – and it could all be traced somehow back to me. Theoretically, assuming my claim was false and the judge in the matter also felt my intent was to harm their business (so, for example, let’s also say I run a competitive business) and not just be making a snarky comment – possibly, a case could be made. Part of the problem with much of the passing of misinformation, or Photoshopped images that are intended to mislead, is that tracing the image or statement back to its source is very difficult, time-consuming, and consequently expensive. Why bother? That would all depend on what you’ve got to lose, I would imagine. In that case of a lie initiated by a competitor and deliberately spread with the intent to do harm —harm that eventually ensued— it certainly might be worth at least presenting “alternate facts,” if not making a big enough legal stink that the competitor looked worse than he intended to make you appear. Of course, if someone spreads a nasty comment online that is true, there is no cause of action. Modifications of images are likewise actionable if the modification is intended to cause harm, or does cause harm – and is not so obviously silly that it is beyond reasonable belief. One thing that’s important to know: ISPs and Websites are protected by the 1995 Communications Decency Act, so though they may have deep pockets, as long as the site or the ISP isn’t itself spreading harmful lies, there is no case to bring against them. Now, a little on the more complicated question of whether a government official’s online statements, specifically on social media, can be cited as a matter of public policy. Needless to say, if said official has a personal account, and an official one (which transfers to a new office-holder when the office changes hands – i.e., it belongs to the office), an argument could be made that Tweets or Facebook posts that are made on a non-official account (“isn’t this view of the ocean beautiful?”) are less significant than those made on an official account. Nevertheless, just recently, the 9th Circuit set a kind of precedent (and please

keep in mind, I am not a lawyer, I don’t pretend to be one!) when it used President Trump’s tweets as demonstration that his “travel ban” was more than just a restriction of travel from certain foreign nations for a limited period of time but in fact a “Muslim travel ban,” because Trump’s tweets had referred to it that way (keep in mind, tweets are restricted to 140 characters, so what might have seemed like an economical way to say “travel from some predominantly Muslim nations” ended up as public policy). The issue was made more damning in that President Trump’s own communications team suggested that his tweets were, in fact, “official.” Further: Trump has two Twitter accounts associated with him: @RealDonaldTrump and @POTUS. The POTUS one, of course, is the one that belongs to The President. Pundits acknowledge that the tweets from @POTUS are more restrained and also more likely the work of his communications team (at least in part) that are his tweets on @RealDonaldTrump. And, muddying the waters still further, a bot dreamed up by “technologist, coder and activist Russel Neiss,” based upon a suggestion of Patrick Cunnane, aide former President Barack Obama, searches for Trump tweets every 15 minutes, and reposts them to the account @RealPressSecBot on official-looking White House letterhead. So: long answer to a short question. As of right now, yes, whatever a government official (at least, the President) tweets can —and apparently will— be considered official statements of the office. And what does this all mean to you, a social media user? In your capacity as a private citizen, it is still prudent to take a moment before hitting the “share” option on anything that appears sketchy that also is proximate to you and your community and friends. Just for the sake of clarity and honesty, if something “smells” funny to me, I check around a bit to see if it’s a hoax or false story. If so, I let the one who passed it to me know, and don’t go any further. If it’s a silly meme or joke, have at it – and add your appropriate emoticons. However, all of us should be aware that in some form, we represent the companies we work for, the members of our families and other social organizations, and tirades online —even drunken or half naked photos, as we’ve seen— can have consequences. Stop. Think. Then, if you must, Tweet.

Word on the Street by Bill McClellan

Revolution Is In The Air As we get older we tend to realize that 100 years ago or 150 years ago was not way, way back like it once seemed. And 150 years ago Americans just like you and me were killing Americans just like our neighbors en masse. We killed more of each other in the Civil War than were killed in both WWI and WWII combined. Often relatives were killing relatives. 620,000 of us were killed by us. Because we disagreed over how our government was running things. Until the mid-19th Century our government thought it was just fine to own and enslave human beings. To change this systemic madness required this horrible war. As we swear with the sincerity of life and death to support our constitution, no one is ready to admit that though the intent is clear it is not defined, and as such there are no adhering principles. As a result strong potential for our 2nd massive systemic failure is now in place. Today’s era is fraught with a new brand of systemic danger and on one major front (the selling of the peoples’ well-being) the danger is indeed grave. In clear view of a severely flawed governmental system too many move forward like somehow our tragic state of affairs is related to certain individuals. It is not individual. It is systemic. Our declines are purely the result of American government failing on massive scale. Leaders, again, en masse did not protect our jobs, our rivers, our trees, our people, our health or our quality of life. They did not maintain our roads, bridges, tunnels, water supply, sewers, electrical grids, telecommunications, and so forth. And they did not provide or maintain the physical components of interrelated systems providing,

economics, commodities and services essential to enable, sustain, or enhance societal living conditions. To be very clear what caused today’s environment is rooted in Campaign Finance design. The very selling of decisions for money to those few that gain. This election was about the system prevailing or voting for anything new. For enough to swing the election this was a no-brainer. The government watched (because they allowed themselves to be bought) and allowed our infrastructure to deteriorate gravely. They watched and even had systems to reward moving jobs overseas. They did this in full few of the destruction of the Middle Class and in full view of Black, Hispanic and immigrant population expansion. They took our work to poor lands and exploited their environments. The greedy that bought and sold our lives (Politicians and Wealth) simply did not care about the consequence to others. They set the course toward third world living for America. It worked. For them. One percent of them own 50% of America. Millions of Americans that not long ago were either in full pursuit of, or had the American dream now experience this third world progression. Their quality of life has gravely diminished in recent decades. Minority communities, especially Black and Hispanic were deserted. First and foremost we lock them up so fast for so little that the inhumanity is shocking to anyone that stops and looks. This makes half of the young men and many women undesirable to employers. Factories or large retailers or decent centers with a variety of quality shopping are glaringly absent from minority communities. Even Basic needs stores such as groceries and banks are seldom found. There is no work. Few can afford a used car and if there is a bus service it is highly inefficient and seldom compatible with distant work locations. If you are handicapped and want call-a-bus their rigid cruel rules will not get you one block past their inefficient borders. Thousands of willing workers are confined by lack of transportation. The Middles Class remnants live in dismay at their loss. These are the places where the systemic wounds fester. As those that are making it remove themselves in every way they can from this reality, it is still there, it is growing, it is festering and it is explosive. You could feel the systemic disrespect in the last election. If Trump had lost that may well have been the trigger. That is how close we are. All you need is the trigger. Revolutionary Momentum is already formed. It lies dormant just waiting for the trigger and over-

The robbed middle class is where it will start. The poor will happily follow. When everything and every sense of fairness is taken from you, fighting back feels like the right thing. Greed forgot it is mostly the poor and disenfranchised that fight and fought our wars. These are our warriors. Greed has made a serious mistake. Momentum has the potential to spread like wildfire. When you take quality of life and hope and cause glaring economic inequality and greed and treat your people like they are stupid submissive pawns, you are giving birth to the end of your society. History is riddled with such failure.

RECIPE

Grilled Swordfish

with Cucumber-Melon Salsa Recipe by Amy Wisniewski Ingredients:

GRILLING SWORDFISH

SALSA 2 cups peeled English cucumber, small dice (from 1 medium cucumber) 1 cup cantaloupe, small dice 1/4 cup red onion, finely chopped 4 teaspoons freshly squeezed lemon juice 4 teaspoons olive oil 2 teaspoons fresh Italian parsley, finely chopped

Heat a gas or charcoal grill to medium high (about 375°F to 425°F) or a grill pan over medium-high heat and rub the grill or grill pan with a towel dipped in vegetable oil. Coat both sides of the swordfish with oil and season all over with salt and pepper.

1 teaspoon packed lemon zest 1 teaspoon fresh oregano, finely chopped 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper SWORDFISH 6 (4- to 6-ounce) swordfish fillets (about 2 pounds) Salt & Freshly ground black pepper Vegetable oil

Place the fish on the grill and cook, undisturbed, until dark grill marks form, about 5 minutes. Turn and grill until the fillets are just cooked through and opaque, about 3 to 4 minutes more. Transfer the fish to individual plates, top each fillet with salsa, and serve.

Serves: 6 People TOTAL Time: 20 min Difficulty: Easy

Revolution Is In The Air continued from pg 41 The problem and the solution are so glaring it seems they blind us to their existence. Like failing to see the truck for the headlights. You cannot sell your country’s governing to the highest bidder at the expense of public well-being. It will never, never work. This one flaw, selling 1% WOULD decisions, during this critical post OWN THIS 9% WOULD OWN THIS WWII era made governing on behalf of the people impossible within the THE REAMAING 90% WOULD OWN THIS human condition. Greed is simply too common within the human condition for any government to succeed without addressing this weakness. Graphic depicting the division of Reckless campaign finance law not wealth in the United States. only robbed the value of government it turned government against the people. Government became a store for buying cheap easy money and selfish regulation. These failed patriots that run our land would decide multi-million dollar legislation for a few thousand dollar contribution. Public consequence did not matter. The price was a grain of sand on a beach to the rich. Unfair greedy hands should never have been given free and reckless access to America’s entire bounty. The greedy will take it all at any expense if you let them. Our recent history is the glaring tragic example. What makes revolutionary danger today so grave is that we don’t recognize the problem. In full view of the clear and massive devastation to Americans on every imaginable front our Supreme Court which serves as a major disaster within the framework of our failing system, passed Citizens United which may well have sealed our revolutionary fate. The mustard seed that causes the appointment or Supreme Court Justices is also Favor for Favor. As they wade in their hypocrisy of fairness and integrity politics is the root of their decisions. The rich killed McCain/Finegold which just touched the surface of favor for favor. Two out of five American voters did vote for Donald Trump. Most, not because they believe in him or even like him, but because the systemic toxicity of the 535 that represent them is more repulsive. I am giving you the answer to the world’s woes in this little column and once again the tree will fall alone and silently into the woods. And the price is only the future of mankind. Postscript: The top 1% of Americans own 50% of America’s bounty. The top 20% of Americans own 85% of the country’s wealth and the bottom 80% of the population own 7%. The richest 20 Americans have 732 billion. That is more than the bottom half of the population. Yes 20 people have more than 152 million. A repulsive awareness is stirring.

IF THE U.S. LAND MASS WERE DIVIDED LIKE THE U.S. WEALTH

Directions: SALSA Combine all of the ingredients in a large, nonreactive bowl and stir until well coated. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Greed is simply too common within the human condition for any government to succeed without addressing this weakness.
