Hotel Transylvania 3 Summer Vacation 2018 has already proved to be a spectacular year for animated films. Pixar’s THE INCREDIBLES 2 delivered a sequel that fans had been waiting 15 years for, and proved to be just as engrossing and entertaining as the original. Wes Anderson’s ISLE OF DOGS was a stunningly original, quirky work of art that added another impressive chapter in the filmmakers growing list of eccentric and hypnotic productions. It would be difficult for any movie to follow these two top-notch titles, and though HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3 will no doubt delight the majority of the youngsters that will fill the theater this summer, it doesn’t compare to the two aforementioned films in any conceivable any way. Produced by Sony Animation Studios, HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3 is the type of family film that makes no qualms about being a straight-forward, low-brow comedy. After spending years watching his guests, and even his daughter, spend quality time with their spouses, Count Dracula (Adam Sandler) makes the sudden realization that he is lonely. He attempts to use dating apps on his phone, but these are filled with nothing but old hags, literally. His friends, including Frank (Kevin James) and the Griffin (David Spade) try to hook him

up with an eligible bachelorette, but this too fails to yield any positive results. Realizing that her father needs to get away from the hotel, Mavis (Selena Gomez) decides that it’s time for a vacation. She surprises dear old dad (along with every single friend that they have) with a trip aboard a cruise. Though he is reluctant at first (“It’s a hotel … on zee water!”), once he catches a glimpse of Captain Ericka (Katherine Hahn) he suddenly becomes a lot more interested. At this point, if you are taking your kids to see the third installment of this franchise, you already know what you are getting yourself into. There is not going to be any deep, thought-provoking content, and the wit and charm

exhibited in INCREDIBLES 2 and ISLE OF DOGS is nowhere to be found. It is, after all, an Adam Sandler vehicle that just so happens to be animated. And, if you are well aware of this going in, then its difficult to believe that you’ll be disappointed with the end result. The visuals are dazzling at times, particularly when the group visits an underwater volcano, and also takes an excursion to the lost city of Atlantis. Bright and vibrant, these sequences are attractive to look at, and deliver a few laughs along the way. Like most comedies whose jokes are based largely on butt and bodily fluids, paired with thinly veiled double entendres, there are countless hit-or-miss moments that will either make you laugh or groan. The voice-over work by the cast (which also includes Andy Samberg, Steve Buscemi, Chris Parnell, Molly Shannon, and Keegan-Michael Kay) is amiable enough for the characters that were created, and the performers fit comfortably in their roles. Hahn and Jim Gaffigan (as the decrepit Van Helsing) are nice additions, and Sandler and his crew certainly help garner a number of laughs throughout. Whereas some animated 1370 BURNET AVE., flicks strive SYRACUSE, NY to achieve Exit 690 at Teall Ave. One Block to a crossover Burnet, Turn Right One Block Up appeal that allow their
work to be just as attractive to adults as it is to children, HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3 never attempts to be anything more than it’s not. At the end of the day, it can be viewed as a success in that regard. We brought our two children (ages 9 and 6) and they laughed hysterically throughout. They loved the first two movies in the series, and this one proved to be no different. And, while I may prefer to see a bit more depth in a movie, it’s hard to dislike anything that can keep me moderately entertained while delighting my kids. A special thanks goes to Regal Cinemas at Destiny USA for allow me attend this month’s film.

Preventive Medicine by DR. BARRY
To Be Or Not To Be Telomeres Are The Question My friend Stan wanted me to write more about collagen but I need to get back to even more basic science. The science of DNA … the strands of life. Most of us have 23 pairs of chromosomes which contain all the details about the care and building of the human body. If your DNA gets screwed up … you are screwed up. Mutations in DNA are one way that cancer forms in the body. On way to assess the health of your DNA is to assess the health of the system that maintains the DNA integrity. At the end of each strand of DNA is an endcap called the Telomere. telo = end … meros = part … telomere = end part of DNA. These short nucleotide sequences (TTAGG for you purists) maintain DNA health. Think of it like the aglet, that little wrapper at the end of the shoestring that keeps it from unraveling. This is no idle speculation. A nobel prize has been won by Professor Elizabeth Blackburn PhD. Her work has conclusively shown that there is a relationship between telomere length and health … telomeres shortness is associate with just about all major disease of aging. The shorter your telomere the more disease. Of course this Nobel prize winner runs a commercial lab that will measure your telomeres … hence your “DNA age” not your apparent/ chronological age. You may be 50 years old but have the “DNA age” of a 40 year old or a 60 year old.

Wouldn’t you like to know your DNA age? Well there are multiple companies that offer this testing but you can’t get the tests done in New York State … that would sound fishy but there are a large number of well quantified tests that New York State does not allow including biome testing etc. Forgive me, nitpickers … of course New York State will allow it ONCE you fulfill all the regulatory hurdles. Do they appear to have more regulatory hurdles NHGRI_FACT_SHEET than any other state in the union? Lets just say that there are multiple companies that can offer this testing but not currently in this state. So besides the Nobel Prize winner, who has a financial interest in this field so may not be impartial. Who else is confirming this science? Well, Professor Richard Cathorn writing in the Lancet in 2003 involving a small study of 143 people age greater than 60 years followed for 15 years. Shorter telomeres equal shorter survival. Also Dr. Rodrigo Calderon M.D. PhD wrote in the New England Journal of Medicine 2009 that Telomere dysfunction seems to underlie the development of a range of human genetic degenerative aging diseases and cancer In a study sponsored by the American Heart Association and published in 2008 they had 780 pa-

tients followed up for 4.4 years. Patients with shorter telomeres had twice a risk of death as patients with longer telomeres. Another study done in Sweden on 175 swedish twins showed that the twin with the shorter telomeres had a 2.8 times greater risk of death. So short telomeres bad and long telomeres good. Telomeres shorten with age naturally in a slow predictable pattern. What else can shorten and lengthen telomeres? I know you Americans, you don’t want the details … you just want to know if there is a pill you can take to lengthen your telomeres and thereby lengthen your life. Well there just might be … but follow me through the risk factors first. Shorter telomeres are associated with earlier death and stressors including PTSD, BENZOPYRENE_DNA_ stress employment and work schedule ADDUCT_1JDG childhood institution or trauma depression pessimism phobic anxiety and hostility, poor sleep quality and sleep apnea, low physical activity, smoking cigarettes, migraines, all types of heart disease, including hypertension, MI, atherosclerosis, aneurysm, carotid artery disease and stroke. What is associated with longer telomeres? Younger age female gender, increased paternal age of birth, increased physical activity, smaller waist circumference, normal BMI, Mediterranean diet, dietary fiber calorie restriction, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin C, glutathione, and hormones. Dr. Dean Ornish has a diet based program to reverse heart disease. Studies show that his program could increase telomerase, as well as meditation, and TA 65 activation supplement. So exercise and supplements and a righteous diet have been associated repeatedly with longer telomeres and longer telomeres are associated with better health. Sounds like from the above list you could work on multiple risk factors that impact your telomere health. If you have been reading carefully you should be asking … what’s this about TA 65 activation supplement? Well there is a well known enzyme that works to promote telomere health/ length. Telomerase is a natural enzyme that helps to extend telomeres, it was discovered in 1985. When telomerase is activated it adds DNA bases at the end of the chromosomes and allow cells to live longer and revert to a more useful phenotype. Super bonus round … it preferentially extends short telomeres which are the most dangerous. It is active throughout

Sounds Of Syracuse

Jamie Notarthomas, Nonetheless I’m at a rehearsal on the eve of a concert paying tribute to the music of George Harrison. I’m early, so I’m basically loitering with a few of the other early arrivers —each enjoying catching up with the other, when Jamie sort of saunters in, assertively, with intent … pointing assignments as he fills himself into the room. He’s an intense dude when it comes to things like this. Art things. Music things. Producing shows. Making a new album. I remember working with him on a show where he called me and asked me to cover a rather hefty vocal harmony assignment in a challenging short amount of time. “Dude, you’re crazy,” I politely pointed out. “C’mon! … We can do it. How about I come over and we can work on it together,” he enthused. Well. Being a softy for people who make the personal investment of their own fine effort in order to walk their big ol’ talk, I changed my tune about it and made an appointment to work out some ambitious vocal arrangements. Besides, as singers, we are both aware and have both acknowledged that we sing from a very same place as the other does. And here was the opportunity to put it together. So, he came over. I made us a coupla’ cheeseburgers, slow-sipped some nice reposado while working out the arrangements and talking art, music, and the work at hand. I don’t get to talk to too many people about art in a way where I feel compelled by the mutual conversation. (Sorry, I don’t know how else to say that with out being a total prick).
Nonetheless Jamie, to my surprise, turned out to be the total exception. We exchanged a few book titles on art, spiritual matters and music. A few films … I think it’s important to note all this because this is the sort of stuff that brings tangible depth to a body of work. And tangible depth is important to Jamie. He really wants his music to resonate with you in the most positive way, possible. You might already know he’s a helluva musician who can sing his ass off. And you might know that he’s got a history of solid material. Now, he’s releasing 15 new gems in his latest effort. He took a few minutes to chat about it. Jamie Notarthomas Chuck Schiele: Hey Jamie. I’m excited to see that you’re releasing new material. You’ve come a long way to get here. Just how long have you been playing music? How did you become a musician? Jamie Notarthomas: I’ve been playing a long time – over 35 years professionally and had a pretty early start. Have had almost 8,000 shows to date. Like millions of other kids, I was in love with the Beatles and their music. Born in 1964, I could sing along with all of their songs by the time I was in the 1st grade. Maybe that’s why I had to repeat it. I have a very musical family and that made it normal to play music through a variety of instruments. My dad, who was an insurance salesman, spent his free time pouring over classical pianists —Chopin, Beethoven, Van Cliburn & Gershwin— so there was always music in the house. My brothers and sisters all played instruments and sang and I benefited from raiding their record collections. Whereas many of my musical family learned music in a traditional, structured model I was the one who got kicked out of Junior High school band for not playing the trombone well enough and was delighted that I broke my arm in gym class to get me out of piano lessons with my Aunt Jane which I now regret because she was Vinnie Falcone’s THANK YOU FOR VOTING US teacher who went on to be Frank Sinatra’s music director. However, I did truly learn a lot in my high 1100 AVERY AVE, SYRACUSE, NY School vocal jazz ensemble; PHONE: (315) 468-0622 and I met great musical

peers there. I saw James Taylor as a teen and was transfixed by the honesty and eloquence of his songs produced by a single voice and a piece of wood with strings on it. I thought how incredible that this one amazing primate could do that with his fingers and make sounds prettier than a bird. –How special our species is! It made me realize that I wanted to be something like him —bringing joy and healing with his creations— like flowers made of sound that grow into the conscience of the masses. I was also profoundly impacted by the death of John Lennon. Soon after, I went to see a rising star and new hero, Bruce Springsteen. Energy beaming out of him with pure guts and the faith in his God-given right to live on this earth as he chose –he was celebrating life’s greatness in music. I remember him locking eyes with me as I danced my ass off. I left that concert with a burning desire to claim my place in this rk world. I eventually taught myself guitar Sat. 9AM - til Da PM 5 and piano. Still dreaming, not knowing but Sun. 9AM a few songs on guitar, I was too shy to take it seriously, but oh, if only … I continued to write and practice singing in private. I wrote lyrics from a young age but hid them for fear of being mocked by my siblings. By 1986 I was ready and I began my professional music career. To me, music is like visual art..It’s kind of like painting a picture with sound. CS: What instruments do you play? JN: My main passion is singing, and I play guitar, piano, harmonica, and somecostumes times bang rocks together. Anything can be an instrument. As I said before, I failed at formal lessons and taught myself guitar and Parade, Games piano entirely by ear. I remember trying to make my guitar teacher, Chuck Cavalaro, proud of me by teaching myself “Mood For a Day” nt by Yes. Instead of being pleased with me, he was pissed that I couldn’t even read the notes to Frére Jacques from a piece of paper. I Scaven ger hu s ie realized then that that wasn’t the road I was going to take. I have now developed recording skills and become deeply fascinated with U-pick Berr structure, arrangements and various drum rhythms and styles. I love everything about the actual music itself. Give Aways CS: How would you characterize your music? Pirate Movie JN: To me, music is like visual art —which I am a serious student of— I guess I would say that I blend the best of what I perceive in the various styles of music (that span throughout history) into my own signature voice. It’s kind of like painting a picture with sound. I 3275 Cold Springs Road, Baldwinsville, NY feel as if I can see the music. Jamie Notarthomas, Nonethesless continued from pg 7 is as important as the melodies and instrumental performance. CS: What or who inspires you? JN: I have what I call the twelve apostles of Rock and Roll, sort of mentors – in addition to The Beatles (together and individually), James Taylor and Bruce Springsteen, I’ve memorized over 160 of Bob Dylan’s songs so far. I love Elvis Costello, Van Morrison, Bob Marley, Peter Gabriel, Bruce Cockburn, Neil Young. Personally, I’m inspired by nature and the mystery of life and also have a desire to resolve internal and external conflict with music and lyrics. CS: You have a new album. Please tell us about it. JN: I’ve been working on my 5th album for quite some time and am in pre-production for the 15 new songs that I have, right now. I’ll be performing some of the new songs at the CNY Legends show at RidgeRocks on August 4th. There is a connection throughout all my past work that continues to evolve. At the same time, I’ve made great efforts to try and break new artistic ground both musically and lyrically. The only way to understand it is to hear it. Just like a painter, I work relentlessly to create something that will stand the test of time like a DaVinci or a van Gogh. My goal is to contribute something that even my 12 apostles of rock and roll would be inspired and impressed by. CS: Your thoughts on the CNY music scene … JN: It’s a double-edged sword for sure. The positive side is the tremendous talent pool – people from all over the country say “what is in the water in CNY that produces so many great musicians?” –And there is some very healthy competition which pushes us to a very high standard. The negative side of the sword can be quite a distraction and there are plenty of politics and cliques that are driven by those who aren’t even musicians and make other factors more important than the true quality of the music. I’m sure many others have felt this, but, we survive in the face of it by ignoring it and putting the music first. More and more musicians have grown above and beyond the fray and overcome their early stages of insecurity to make great friends Since 1972 and create a growing, collaborative community of Fine Dining artists here. CS: Please share a career highlight or two. JN: I hesitate to namedrop great artists that I’ve opened for, met, or been complimented by,
because the true highlights are between the audience and the artist. When the power of your songs manifests as you hoped it would, when you meet the children of couples who met at your show, when you are told that your song got a person through a difficult or even life-threatening time, and on a more personal level, the feeling you get when you just wrote a great song. –These are the highlights for me. But one worth mentioning in particular is writing a song called “Hope

I wondered if it was any good? What would Dylan think if he Find Jamie and his music on his heard it? Would anybody like it facebook, his site: for that matter? Four years later www.jamienotarthomas.com, Spotify, I was performing it on stage YouTube Top Tracks and iTunes. as I was opening up the show for Dylan himself at Darien Lake and there he stood on the side of the stage watching me and listening to that song. He sent his assistant after the show to let me know he enjoyed it. Later, I found out that a friend who lived in Frankfurt, Germany said he read an interview in the newspaper where Dylan was asked what new musicians he liked and he replied “Jamie Notarthomas.” That felt pretty good. DYLAN OPENER in the 3rd verse of the song … “after a gig in New York City, on Bleeker Street, near Washington Park, next day, woke up, got messed up and went to MOMA for some modern art. With his nose up to a master’s painting, Lil’ George pretends his last name is Seurat, and runs away by looking backwards to see what he has captured and rushes back to paint another dot. As he repeats this charade, we’re all laughing, almost hit the back wall ‘cuz he did not know, the guard had to jump in on him, to keep him from knockin’ down Starry Night by Vincent VanGogh. I hit the floor, laughing, so hard I couldn’t breathe as they escorted him to the door. …” That really happened. CS: Advice to budding musicians: JN: When I was a budding musician, I asked Sam Moore from the famed Sam and Dave what advice he would give me and he said, “just know that it’s a loooootttt of work and that you have to enjoy being challenged and not intimidated by it.” I’d pass that same advice along. CS: Damn straight advice. Whats’ on the horizon for you and your music? JN: To take my new songs to 5 different studios with 5 different producers in 5 different parts of the country and return to serious pursuit of my original career. And to focus everything I have learned thus far into the most powerful manifestation of my music yet. Personally, I’ve continued to enjoy a sense of home by helping to build the amphitheater at The Ridge (RidgeRocks) and by managing and producing a series of very unique music events with the growing community of musician friends that’s developed there. One of those series is an all-original series which I mentioned earlier and features three longstanding original artists from Central New York – my band, The Jamie Notarthomas Band reunited with special guest George Rossi (of Lil’ Georgie and The Shuffling Hungarians) Screentest reunion and CD release, and Simplelife. I’ll be performing songs from all of my albums including an unveiling of new material from my future release. The concert will be from 6-10pm and tickets are available on my webpage or at TheRidgeRocks.com. CS: How do we stay in touch with you and your music? JN: In addition to my webpage – jamienotarthomas. com – and Facebook, you can hear most of my music on Spotify, YouTube Top Tracks or on iTunes. If you can figure out how Alexa pronounces my name, you can play it on your Amazon echo. Lots of people reach out via email too – jamie@jamienotarthomas.com. CS: Ok, Jamie, looks like you have a lot to do. Thanks for taking a little time to share your music with Sounds of Syracuse. JN: Thanks, Chuck. Nice chatting with you.

A Quiet Place For nearly a decade, John Krasinski was known primarily for portraying the lovable and hilarious Jim Halpert on THE OFFICE. Though the actor appeared in films such as the tragically underrated AWAY WE GO, and the Michael Bay actioner 13 HOURS, it was his amiable persona on the THE OFFICE that made him a recognizable star. For some, the transition from the small-screen to the Cineplex’s can be extremely difficult, particularly when you are a supporting player in a beloved series. And, while this may have all been true in relation to Krasinski before this year, it simply no longer the case. With the creative and financial success of his incredible thriller A QUIET PLACE, he has instantly become one of the hottest names in Hollywood. Krasinski and his real-life wife Emily Blunt

The Abbot family (Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe star as Lee and Evelyn Abbott, parents of three young children at the end of the world. Set in the year 2020, the film takes place after an alien invasion has decimated the population of the planet. Savagely attacking anything that makes a noise above a whisper, the creatures are precise, vicious and deadly. As a result, in order to stay alive, the Abbott’s must avoid wearing shoes, communicate via sign language, and avoid anything that might make any type of sound. Being that I am a parent of two children who are only silent when they are sleeping, I, for one, know how colossally impossible this endeavor would be. For a while, the Abbott’s are successful in their seemingly futile attempt at survival, and then swiftly and sadly, tragedy befalls them. While the film is called A QUIET PLACE, sound may be the single most important aspect of the entire production. It’s obvious that, being a creature feature, it’s imperative that the aliens be terrifying as well, but at the end of the day, they are not the reason the that this movie succeeds. Instead, it is the performances of its minimalist cast (I counted a total of 8 characters who are seen onscreen) and the use of sound that allow this PLACE to become of the most suspenseful and original thrillers in years. Like Christopher Nolan’s DUNKIRK, the sound in A QUIET PLACE is a character in itself. Utilized with expert precision by Krasinski, who not only served as the star of the film, but director, co-producer, and co-writer, it proves to be the very essence of terror. With an almost complete lack of dialogue, it is the background noise that helps continuously build tension. In fact, in many instances, it is the lack of sound that crafts an utterly unnerving feeling that pushes the viewer ever closer to the edge of their seat. Knowing that a single item falling, or a sudden exclamation or cry could result in the violent end of anyone on screen, you find yourself simultaneously dreading, and shamefully yearning for, anything that may trigger an attack. In conjunction with the sound, the performances by the main cast (Krasinski, Blunt, and youngsters Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe) are fantastic. Though not a silent film by any means, in a way, the performers must 22 State St.,Tully 315-696-5219 project their emotions like the most accomplished silent stars in the early Clothing days of cinema. Without a spoken word, Toys they effectively display fear, desperation, Jewelry hope, and love as each situation dictates, Housewares and this heightens the sense of intensity Gift Certificates throughout. As more than one sequence illustrates, A QUIET PLACE is not a predictable by-the-numbers thriller where you know what is going to happen

Emily Blunt as Evelyn Abbot from one sequence to the next, so the characters visceral reactions are instrumental in the film’s ability to inspire chills and jumps. Though there are likely to be a number of qualified candidates when 2018 comes to a close, at this point, I wholeheartedly believe that Krasinski deserves Best Director consideration from the Academy. While it can’t compare in social commentary and boundary-shattering execution of Jordan Peele’s GET OUT, A QUIET PLACE obliterated the norms of traditional PG-13 thrillers. Challenging its audience to accept a feature length film where there are only a handful of spoken words, and doing so with such a small cast, it is a daring experiment that could have failed miserably. Instead, it is one of the more entertaining productions I have seen this year, and as a horror fan, one that I am unlikely to forget.

To Be or Not To Be continued from pg 5 embryogenesis but then stops of birth. Turns out there is a Chinese herb ( isn’t there always?) that has been shown repeatedly to increase telomerase activity and has been shown in both mice and humans reliably to lengthen telomeres while you take the supplement. What we don’t know … and it’s a big what … is if this “ natural” lengthener really translates into important clinical results like living longer or less cancer or better overall health etc. It’s very intriguing but way too early to take action with some supplement until you have done everything else you can do … Mediterranean diet, exercise, better sleep, stress reduction, quit smoking, normalize body weight, etc. I will get a lot more excited about this when I can actually order the test … make some changes … or have my patients make changes and repeat the test to assess whether the intervention made a difference. . Soon hopefully you can get a Four pack of tests that will assess your health better than the many tests your current doctor is doing.

1. Gut biome 2. Telomere length 3. Insulin 4. Antioxidant scan The first two are held hostage to bureaucracy for now. The third any doctor can do and the fourth test is available if you ask around. Unfortunately if you take this list to your current doctor they will look at you like you are a mental patient (and I think we are all mental patients) and mock you for falling for some internet chat site pseudo science. However if you had the time to sit and talk about any one of these issues they would eventually COMPLETELY agree that each one is important. Even a doctor who hasn’t opened a medical journal in 5 years must have heard something about the important work being done on understanding the bugs in our guts and how they may control our weight, our mood, our immune system etc. Your doctor may know nothing of telomeres but a two minute search of the internet will bring them up to speed. Every doctor alive knows about Insulin but most don’t look at it as a marker for inflammation but that is also something they can relate to once they start to look closer at the inflammatory processes in the body … and finally everybody talks about antioxidants. Turns out there is a machine that can reliably measure one of them (and they travel in packs like wolves). There is a cheap machine your doctor can lease / buy that will allow him to scan you and give you insight into this one antioxidant but suggests your overall antioxidant status. The problem is the scan is not covered by insurance and most doctors stop right there thank you very much. I am not looking for business … certainly not your business, but it pains me that this scan is not more readily available. The science is very solid and the tech is simple and reliable. So, If you are interested I will scan you for a $10 donation to Wanderers Rest Pet Rescue, Hope for the Bereaved, Helping Hounds, Clearpath for Vets, or Father Champlin’s Guardian Angels. Call 410-0651 and we can make it happen. It’s no additional charge. Its not an office call … its a quick scan, say hello and comment on the scan and off you go. I think it’s an interesting and exciting time to be a healthcare provider. The focus on longevity is interesting and once we can measure your telomeres we will have one more tool to assist you in your efforts to maintain and improve your health. Until next month … get well … stay well.

Computers & the Web by NANCY ROBERTS
The More Things Change Believe me, I understand that software has to keep evolving. Part of it is simply keeping people interested and feeling as though they’re getting something “better.” Part of it is greater computing power and building on the shoulders of a previous release – bug fixing, user satisfaction indexes, and that kind of thing. But I’ve also wondered more than once if tinkering isn’t done “just because we can,” and not necessarily to the user’s advantage. I was seriously annoyed not so long ago when the Microsoft Office Suite “adjusted” its controls, moving items around from menu to menu, changing names of things, and making all those “muscle memory” operations difficult to relearn. Add features, sure – but is it really necessary to regroup them? Did the Microsoft engineers have serious reason to believe users would be happy to find that an operation they used literally daily now had to be hunted for and remapped mentally? Of course we all know that what’s “in style” for websites has been changing radically over the years: left menus with flyouts were The Thing until top nav replaced it and has been holding steady. Deep, all-inclusive sites in many cases were replaced with simple, business-card style introductions with easy to locate contacts. Unless they hid the direct contacts behind a one-size-fits-all contact form. A big fat phone number in the upper right corner so you could simply call the place quickly disappeared in favor of a tiny little number hidden deep at the bottom of the page. Multiple pages organized neatly by subject were replaced with long, long, long scrolling pages containing all sorts of seemingly randomly placed information —and worst of all are the moving objects— touch them with your mouse at your own peril. Of greater concern, and more annoyance, is our social media interactions. By now, of course, the “Facebook and your privacy” issue has been discussed. I lacked a certain amount of sympathy with anyone who felt betrayed or violated by their information being “discovered” because the very act of engaging on a social media platform is making yourself the content – your actions, interactions, products you buy, ideas you endorse.

` I recall many years ago one particularly private individual saying to me “Facebook is evil,” and swearing he would never take part in it. He hasn’t. Relatively speaking, his privacy remains private. But lately Facebook, as well as Twitter —not so much Instagram— has been rolling out a series of adjustments not only in what is allowable content (naked photos, yes, the Declaration of Independence, no) but in how you are advertised to and how you will interact with the platform. As noted above, software (and both Facebook and Twitter are software) is constantly evolving. The nice and easy interaction you once had with a Facebook video (you watched, it ended, you perhaps liked it —or not— and that was that) now can turn into a nightmare of video after video unless you instruct the platform not to auto-play video. Facebook fact-checkers review stories and rate them, demoting content they view as “false.”

The More Things Change continued from pg 15 We’ve known for a long time that you’ll get more posts from people you interact with frequently, but that it bears little resemblance to what they may actually be sharing. What we now must contend with is that someone’s story or link may be denied “air” because it doesn’t meet fact-checker scrutiny. Which begs the question: who checks the fact checkers? I’m not sure about your experience, but I’ve noted a significant uptick in hacked accounts (requests to be friends from people I’m already friends with, followed by odd interactions with that “person”) and an increasing number of requests to friend the handsome man who inevitably works in some manly occupation and is widowed (often shown holding a puppy, a child, or a bunch of flowers). The male equivalent of this is a gorgeous half-clothed Russian woman. But here’s a hopeful note: I’m sure you’ve seen the coloring-for-adults books. Welcome now the planning on paper classes being offered in a group setting. Yes, face to face with other people. The idea being to remember (or learn) how to write physical notes on paper, keep a journal, record thoughts and ideas, and actually construct your lists with a pen and paper. Public diaries, which, in many ways, Facebook and Twitter and Instagram are, are all well and good – and in many ways great fun because it’s easier to take a photo or video and share it all in one swift arc than to take a photo, print it, put it in an envelope and mail it off to a friend. But there is also something — much— to be said for not only sharing our thoughts with just ourselves, but getting together in person with friends, old and new, to share an experience together. Maybe the pendulum has swung far enough in the online direction and we’ll enjoy a little break in the world of pens, papers, and – this actual newspaper you’re reading!

How to Wear a Romper Presently onesies, jumpsuits, and rompers are almost everywhere, but it could be less intimidating for people who have never worn it before. So be confident and don’t be nervous. Basically, the design of these rompers are inspired by men's coveralls, but in a completely feminine and sophisticated way, along with the right cuts, designs, colors, textures, and styling. Here we have a guide to wearing the romper in some stylish and easy ways: Define Your Waist While buying the romper, you should consider a slouchy and straight fitting romper as it will give you a stylish and cool look. An amazing way to define your body shape and add some extra femininity to your overall look is to go with a cinched waist. Belts are not always needed; just tie any lightweight jacket or top around your waist to give you a prettier look.

Break It Up & Glam it Up Rompers and jumpsuits are available in solid colors, but you can add a spice to it and break up the big block of color by wearing any lightweight jacket. You should leave it open in the front, giving your body an elongated look or you can simply wear it on your shoulders to bring street style cred. Dress it up with a stylish bag and some antique jewelry. Just Add A Heel Whenever you feel like your look is incomplete, just wear heels along with your romper or jumpsuit and it will completely transform your entire look and make you feel more confident and pretty. Go For A Bold Color When you want to show off those curves, go for a bold color. Not only is it an attention getter, but your silhouette will be center stage.
Here a solid black shows off the silhouette with a sexy leather jacket to go with it
Choose A Feminine Print Feminine floral prints, ruffles, lace, drop waists, cutouts, and more will make you look and feel attractive and sexy. There are no ends to the patterns to choose from, try them all on! What do you feel like today?

In 1979, Elizabeth “Teddi” Mervis was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor at the age of nine. Her father, Gary Mervis, traveled across the country to major medical centers seeking the best possible treatment for his daughter. He returned home without the answers he had been looking for and realized that it was not the craniotomy, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy that was causing Teddi the most pain, but it was the loneliness of being the only child in her school and neighborhood dealing with cancer. With the help and support of many friends and community members in Greater Rochester, New York, Gary founded Camp Good Days and Special Times, Inc., a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, to provide Teddi and other children with cancer the opportunity to come together in a residential camping experience to be with the only ones who could truly understand what they were going through - other children with cancer. Camp Good Days was the fourth organization of its kind in the United States and the first to be started by a lay person. Since its inception, Camp Good Days has served more than 47,800 campers from 22 states and 35 foreign countries. Camp Good Days maintains accreditation from the American Camp Association, maintains a 4 star rating from Charity Navigator and has been inducted into the Safety 1st Hall of Fame by Markel Insurance Company. Over the years, Camp Good Days has become one of the largest organizations of its kind with many of the programs and services started there being used as models for other cancer treatment centers and organizations around the world. Today, Camp Good Days remains dedicated to improving the quality of life for children and families whose lives have been touched by cancer and other life threatening challenges through residential camping experiences held at their own beautiful Recreational Facility on Keuka Lake, as well as year-round, recreational and support activities and events held across Upstate New York in Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, and the Southern Tier Region, for families who are facing life’s toughest challenges. Camp Good Days also maintains a presence on the Internet at www.campgooddays.org. In our CNY Region we have monthly events for children 4-17 called ‘Cuse Kids as well as monthly events for our Sassy Survivors – a women’s oncology program; these events allow the participants to maintain the friendships and support they have gained through Camp Good Days programs. We have learned to cook, gone on excursions, met for picnics, taken plane rides, played kazoos and had a lot of laughs! So as not to place any additional financial burden on the families served; all of the programs and services provided by Camp Good Days are offered free of charge for the participants. This is only possible because of the support and generosity of so many individuals, businesses, and organizations, and the success of special fundraising events held throughout the year; . goes to programs and services! With a small group of paid employees, Camp Good Days is a volunteerbased organization, governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and relying on the dedication and service of thousands of volunteers to assist in the providing of programs and services. While nothing at Camp Good Days will find a cure for cancer or other life threatening challenges, everything is done in an effort to create some good days and special times for the children and families served. Camp Good Days is a celebration of life, with those who have learned to appreciate it the most... a place where courage knows no boundaries For more information, contact Kathy Reilley @ 315-434-9477 or kreilley@campgooddays.org

My mom and I arrived at 916 Riverside on an absolutely perfect summer evening. The weather was just right, with sunshine and a slight breeze so we decided to sit outside overlooking the water. Our view was fantastic, because as I said there is not a bad seat in the house! One of the great things about 916 Riverside is that they have live music every single night outside at the Tiki Bar! The live music was the perfect accompaniment to the awesome weather and great food. We decided to start our meal with some appetizers; we decided on a dozen steamed little necks clams with drawn butter! These little neck steamers from Nova Scotia were clean, fresh, and hearty- some of the best steamed clams we had ever had! We also decided to try the Cajun Fried Catfish Strips, they were lightly breaded with a crunchy and spicy coating and fried to scrumptious perfection! For an entrée I decided to try the seafood platter with fried haddock, giant shrimp and jumbo clam strips. The seafood with fresh and delicious and you could tell it was made to order! My mom decided to try the 14 oz New York Strip steak, topped with creamy gorgonzola butter. The steak was cooked to perfection and served with a side of crispy fries! We finished listening to the band play as we watched the sun go down on another beautiful day. We decided that this is the perfect place to watch the warm summer day fade into a calm summer night and we would definitely be back soon. With great food and great atmosphere 916 Riverside is the perfect place to hold your upcoming event. It is ideal for weddings, showers, and all parties, graduations and clambakes. Impress your guests with great food and amazing views! They have reasonable prices and packages that can surely accommodate all budgets and parties of all sizes. For more information contact them at (315) 668-3434. 916 Riverside is the perfect place to enjoy an ice cold cocktail, grab a bite to eat all while enjoying the beautiful view of the Oneida River. Be sure to like them on facebook to keep up with all of their great events, live music line up, and for a sneak peek of their daily specials. Whether you drive, ride a bike or a motorcycle, paddle or motor around the river you should definitely make it a point to spend a wonderful evening at 916 Riverside.

How to Retrieve American Greatness continued from pg 25 tence. Due to bribery no one is even discussing the job sucking horde of robotic technology that may be the final nail in the coffin of unimaginable Civil disturbance. At the breaking point there will be little sanity. Trump has brought us closer to the edge. He is proof the system is broken and enough to elect him have had it. For generations no recourse was provided. Our suffering turned to evil for help. One with a heart that mocks the handicapped and kowtows to our enemies. Bribery permeates our system and has, over time, diluted our most noble course in history. Once sparked upheaval is a like a wildfire. You need to stop at the edge of a cliff. To any naysayer I say the road we are on is a certain road to widespread civil disorder. A scary unrecognizable America is far too close to ignition. The likelihood of nuclear war is closer to midnight than ever before. The planet is under attack by plastics, garbage and all forms of pollution and warming and corruption induced disagreement. Only the best that we can be has a chance at providing the leadership the world is crying for. To find them, what is said here must be done. The only way to achieve this is to recognize this great human weakness of greed and remove it from “leadership”. The Following is the law, on the books. A Law unenforced as it is controlled by those the law is meant to guide. If American Patriotism is so lost that it fails to cause American Leadership to find a way to enforce this law with accompanying Campaign Finance Reform, we are doomed: Title 18 U.S. Code 201 Federal Prosecution of Public Corruption in the United States (a) For the purpose of this section— (1) the term “public official” means Member of Congress, Delegate, or Resident Commissioner, either before or after such official has qualified, or an officer or employee or person acting for or on behalf of the United States, or any department, agency or branch of Government thereof, including the District of Columbia, in any official function, under or by authority of any such department, agency, or branch of Government, or a juror; (2) the term “person who has been selected to be a public official” means any person who has been nominated or appointed to be a public official, or has been officially informed that such person will be so nominated or appointed; and (3) the term “official act” means any decision or action on any question, matter, cause, suit, proceeding or controversy, which may at any time be pending, or which may by law be brought before any public official, in such official’s official capacity, or in such official’s place of trust or profit. How to Lose Weight and Keep It Off In our eat-and-run, massive-portion-sized nation, maintaining a healthy weight – let alone trying to lose weight can be an uphill battle. The truth is there is no “one size fits all” solution when it comes to losing weight. What works for one person may not work for you. Did you know that 95% of people who lose weight will regain it within a few years? Lack of motivation, little or no self-control and trouble sticking with a long-term weightmaintenance plan are the main reasons that weight-loss programs fail. Pick up any diet book and it will claim to have all the answers to lose weight successfully and keep it off. Some claim the key is to eat less and exercise more, others swear that low-fat is the solution and many are convinced that cutting carbs is the answer. So, what are we supposed to believe? While some people respond well to counting calories, others respond better to having more of a variety in their meals. Sometimes, just cutting out soda, fried foods, or processed foods is enough to see results.
body now requires more fuel to burn. Since insulin only burns carbohydrates, naturally you crave carbohydrates and so begins the vicious cycle of consuming more carbs and gaining weight. Whether or not you’re specifically aiming to cut carbs, most of us consume unhealthy amounts of sugar and refined carbohydrates such as white bread, pizza dough, pasta, pastries, white flour, white rice, and sweetened breakfast cereals. Replacing refined carbs with their whole-grain counterparts and eliminating candy and desserts is only part of
Popular Weight Loss Strategies Cut Calories
continued on pg 31
Some experts believe that if you eat fewer calories than you burn, you will lose weight. It’s a great concept, but if that were the case, why are we still overweight? When you cut calories, you will lose a few pounds in the beginning, but over time you will find that you are not losing as much weight or any weight at all. When you lose weight, you lose water, lean tissue and fat. In the process you’ve also slowed your metabolism down. In order to continue dropping weight, you will have to continue cutting calories. That definitely wouldn’t be the best idea. A calorie isn’t a calorie. Foods that are packed with empty calories (like candy) have a completely different effect on your body than nutrient dense low-calorie foods (like vegetables). Eating one hundred calories from a candy bar, for example, will have a different effect on your body than eating one hundred calories of broccoli.
Cut carbs
Maybe the problem is not consuming too many calories, but rather the way the body stores fat after consuming carbohydrates – in particular the role of the hormone insulin. When you eat a meal, carbohydrates from the food enter your bloodstream as glucose. In order to keep your blood sugar levels in check after a meal, your body burns off this glucose before it burns off fat. If you eat a carbohydrate-rich meal, your body releases insulin to help with the influx of all this glucose into your blood. As well as regulating blood sugar levels, insulin does two things: It prevents your fat cells from releasing fat for the body to burn as fuel (because its priority is to burn off the glucose) and it creates more fat cells for storing everything that your body can’t burn off. The result is that you gain weight and your

Wordsworth Poetical Works – William Wordsworth - aptly named - was one of the first wave of English Romantic poets, whose “The World is Too Much With Us” was one of my introductions to this type of poem. Canturbury Tales – Geoffrey Chaucer The stories one hears when traveling to Canturbury. 30 some pilgrims tell their tales, some heroic, some bawdy, some clever. All brilliant – and what a joy it would be to have heard them performed. The Illiad – Homer Originally to be spoken, the tale of the fall of Troy. I recall reading about a “wine-dark sea” and not understanding how the sea could ever be the color of wine. Of course, I was only ten or so at the time. Marmion – Scott An historic romance poem, The poem tells how Lord Marmion, a favourite of Henry VIII of England, lusts for Clara de Clare, a rich woman. He and his mistress, Constance De Beverley, forge a letter implicating Clara’s fiancé, Sir Ralph De Wilton, in treason. Constance, a dishonest nun, hopes that her aid will restore her to favour with Marmion. When De Wilton loses the duel he claims in order to defend his honour against Marmion, he is obliged to go into exile. Clara retires to a convent rather than risk Marmion’s attentions. And I admit – I’ve not read it! But it’s always good to have something to look forward to. Fact, Fancy and Fable In alphabetical order, just a confabulation of facts, fancies, and fables – from mermaids to uses for marigold leaves. Anna Karenina – Tolstoy A great, sweeping, dramatic, grand novel —like Russian music— that tells the sad story of the infidelity of the title character. The Norton Anthology of World Masterpieces Norton Anthologies are splendid collections of selected works that aids the reader in choosing nothing but the best. Irish Fairy and Folk Tales – Yeats William Butler Yeats was fascinated with the folk and fairy lore of Ireland, and this volume is a collection of some of his favorites. Every land, it seems, had native sprites, demons and nature spirits. British Dramatists – Dryden to Sheridan If you like you gin with tonic, and your humor dry and witty, this is for you. Ariel – the Life of Shelley Shelley was perhaps, a prototype hippie: gentle, fun-loving, romantic, hedonistic, kind, and fond of spirits. Of all kinds. The Outline of History – H.G. Wells Influenced by Darwin and divided up thematically and always an eye toward science, Wells attempts to examine man’s entire arc, from origin to the publication of this book in 1919 and 1920 (in installments). Influenced no doubt by the first World War, he was, for the era, encyclopedic in his scope, beginning with proto-humans and working his way forward. As with any library, the greatest challenge is to keep from dragging any book down as soon as your interest is captured by its title and losing yourself for the evening, day, weekend, buried in reading. But now that I’ve completed this article, maybe I’ll just take a moment …

How to Lose Weight and Keep it Off continued from pg 29 the solution. Sugar is hidden in foods as diverse as canned soups and vegetables, pasta sauce, margarine, and many reduced fat foods. Since your body gets all it needs from sugar naturally occurring in food, all this added sugar amounts to nothing but a lot of empty calories and unhealthy spikes in your blood glucose.
Cut fat
It’s the pillar of many diets. If you don’t want to get fat, don’t eat fat. I wonder then, with aisles of low-fat options for us to choose from at the grocery store, why are we still fat? Not all fat is bad. Healthy or “good” fats can actually help burn fat, control your weight and boost your mood. Unsaturated fats found in avocados, nuts, seeds, soymilk, tofu, and fatty fish can also help keep you satisfied. Many of us who are trying to watch our fat intake make the mistake of swapping fat for sugar and refined carbohydrates. Filling our bodies with empty calories with no nutritional value is a recipe for disaster.
Control emotional eating
We don’t always eat simply to satisfy hunger. All too often, we turn to food when we’re stressed, worried, bored, lonely, anxious, or depressed. If we’re doing this on a regular basis it’s going to show up on the scale. Use tools to track your progress People that keep track always get the best results. Smartphone apps, fitness trackers, or simply keeping a journal can help you keep track of the food you eat, the calories you burn, and the weight you lose. Seeing the results in black and white can help you stay motivated.

Where do I redeem my vouchers?
Brew Time
The Now & Later Craft Beer Corner (sponsored by, you guessed it, Captain Obvious – Now & Later) is located on the first base side of the stadium on the same level as all of your food choices. It’s small, so be prepared to wait in line, but the traffic flows pretty quickly.

Root, Root, Root for the Home Team! Nothing says Summer-lovin’ in CNY quite like watching a Syracuse Chiefs baseball game and drinking a cold one while eating a Hofmann’s hot dog slathered in any number of tasty condiments … & that’s exactly what I did with one of my best girlfriends, on a gorgeous Friday night at the end of June, during Craft Beer Friday at NBT Bank stadium. (And the Chiefs won in a spectacular bottom of the 8th inning 4-run comeback!)
What is Craft Beer Friday, do you ask?
A new promotion for 2018, $20 gets you one 200-level ticket to a Friday home game this season with two 16oz craft beer vouchers. (Must be 21 & older – Remember to bring your ID with you to the game!) There are two ways to get tickets – either call the ticket office at 315-474-7833 to purchase your tickets, where they’ll be held at Will Call for pickup on game day, or go to the Chiefs official website www.syracusechiefs.com and purchase online. Something to keep in mind – If you’re going as a couple or a group, one person will need to pony up the cash in order to all be seated together. (I would hold the beer vouchers hostage until everyone pays you back, but that’s just me.)
Inside the Corner, there’s a large chalkboard with a vast array of beers to choose from, in 16oz cans, as well as on draft. On the night that I went (June 29th, to be exact) there were 34 different cans of craft beers listed on the board – From Spider Bite Brewing’s Shazy Session IPA to a collaboration brew between Two Roads Brewing & Evil Twin called Two Evil: Geyser Gose to Lough Gill Brewery’s Round the Clock Breakfast Stout, and literally EVERYTHING in between. Only 3 beers out of the 34 total were completely out of stock when I passed through the door. On tap, the 3 craft beers available were all from Eastwood Brewing Company, (from right here in our own backyard in the Eastwood neighborhood! Woot! Woot!), as they were having a tap-takeover that evening. However, on any given game day, there will be a different variety of craft beer available on draft, and the selection of craft cans will be rotating as well. If you’re looking for a list ahead of time, download the app Untappd to your smartphone or tablet and start following NBT Bank Stadium to see what’s available. If you’re unfamiliar to Untappd, it’s a great tool to use to follow your favorite breweries and keep track of all the beers that you’re trying. And while you’re at it, come follow me as well, as I document all my brew adventures! You can find me at username: Merritka12.
Be responsible craft beer drinkers and recycle your cans!
Do your part and be mindful of your cans after consuming your brews by properly disposing of them in the labeled blue recycling bins located all throughout the stadium. Those 5 cents might not mean much to you, but they sure mean a lot for our Central NY Veterans! Sponsored by the Syracuse Chiefs, in conjunction with Chick-fil-A in Cicero and Bottle & Can Retrieval Centers, 100% of the profits from the “Cans for Clear Path,” 2018 recycling program, will benefit all the different programs and services at Clear Path for Veterans. Please check out their website, www.clearpath4vets.com to learn more about this vital organization dedicated to serving and assisting Veterans and their families in our local community!
BONUS!
There are FIREWORKS after every Friday night home game. The show is actually pretty great too, so definitely stick around for it!

Business of Interest by NANCY ROBERTS
David’s Hideaway David’s Hideaway 68 US Rt. 11 (14.21 mi) Central Square, New York 13036 Wednesday - Saturday 4:30 - Close Let’s take a little trip back in time – all the way back to the 60’s. It was the disco era: go-go boots, mini-skirts, DJ’s, and non-stop dancing. A young man, David Buono, owned a neighborhood bar on Butternut Street called The Shack. It was a popular spot, especially for the northside crowd – Ron Keigy, Ray Haler, Vincent Lioto, Joe Mancini, Joe Marnelli, Joe Ricelli, and both brothers David and Donnie Samora – some friends, some David Buono, owner of popular bartenders. While live David’s Hideaway music wasn’t an every week event, he booked bands: The Campus Walkers (with lead drummer Tommy Rosanno), The Magnificent Seven, The Seven, Aunt B’s Canned Music, The Coachmen and The Reflections. Every band, though, would draw hundreds of young people anxious to have a good time. Some time in the late 60s, Buono took a trip to Las Vegas and witnessed his first discotheque. “Ten miles out in the middle of nowhere,” recalls Buono, “and there were a thousand people. A thousand.” He went in and experienced his first disco night, and his first DJ spinning records. He was so impressed he returned to Syracuse, closed The Shack, and started remodeling – then calling the newly remodeled club Orpheus. The result was an 8 foot sunken dance floor, fog machines, laser lights, and DJs pumping the music out – loud and non-stop. He called it “Orpheus,” after the Greek God of Love. The place was a hit, and crowds waited in line for the 88-maximumallowable capacity. “We’d move 300 or more people through on any given night,” recalls Buono. Call him a trend-setter, but it wasn’t long before the Baby Boom Syracusans were enjoying clubs and discos all over town. “Club 37, Suburban Park, The Machine Shop, both R.J. O’Toole’s, The Back Door, The Zodiac Club, Lost Horizon, The Sugar Mill —owned by Dominic Pagano— and last but not least, Tony Manacone’s Velvet Underground,” he can name them all. “This was with very little air conditioning,” Buono remembers, “and smoking was legal indoors at that time. And bars stayed open til 3 a.m. – it was still hard to get them to leave. We had some
The outdoor tiki bar and stage area famous customers, too. Our late former Mayor Lee Alexander and entourage would come in, and also his son, Jamie, to enjoy the music. Parking was an issue. For Orpheus, we had 4 parking spaces behind the building. People would walk a half mile to get in. The owner of Suburban Park, Gene DiNino, was a frequent customer, drinking a Coke, and just looking at everything in amazement, and copied the sunken dance floor in both of his locations.” The club boasted some big names in the DJ business – Don Corilli, Alan Langdon, Norman Morittzi, Pat Testa. It was a great time to be young, energetic, and out on the town. Buono branched out into the used car, and eventually new car businesses, owning Dave Buono’s Datsun, which became Liverpool Nissan; Dave Buono Dodge in Cortland, and DA Buono Construction. But the siren song of night life kept calling, and Buono opened a second disco above the Cafe Metro —owned by Joe Marnelli— across from the famed Hotel Syracuse Library, and Scratch Daniel’s, owned by Vinnie Nametti, in downtown Syracuse: Crystal’s. “It was an all-mirrored disco … (a hit also with downtowners)” says Buono. But as they have a way of doing, times and tastes changed, and eventually Buono began to scale back and settled into a used car dealership in Central Square called 3-Extreme Motorsports. But just down the road a place came up for sale – and Buono continued on pg 36

David’s Hideaway continued from pg 33 couldn’t resist. Could “Orpheus Two” be the charm? Opening as a duplicate of Orpheus, the original, was, says Buono, “A way of bringing back old memories. Fun for the people who remembered the original.” Eventually, Buono determined that a new mix of food, drink, music and fun meant re-thinking for today’s crowd, and he closed down to re-assess. With the opening of the summer season came the opening of David’s Hideaway. So, what will you find there? An absolutely fascinating blend of food favorites, great dance space, and outdoor Tiki Bar and a 30 x 30 foot band stage, with comfortable seating for everyone and your choice of settings, from cozy to energized to somewhere in between. Oh – and a disco ball, of course, on the inside stage! On Wednesday there is beer pong. Wednesday and Thursday you’ll enjoy Littleneck Clam specials (Two-for-$10.99), and on Thursdays try the $.25 wings with your Karaoke. Fridays and Saturdays are for live music along with a snack or a meal, some drinks, and good company. And as it’s laid out, there are no “bad” seats in the house for viewing the bands on the outdoor stage. Buono has been in the business long enough to have attended to every detail. “From time to time a celebrity bartender will come in,” he notes. “David Samora or Sam Misita. Names you’ll recognize.” The venue will book your wedding, stag party, shower, or fund raiser, (and beat anyone’s prices) as well. There is also special roped-off parking for motorcycles. And one final note: did we mention the Ladies Room? All by itself, this splendid room is reason enough to stop by: marble, granite, polished floors and perfect lighting – along with grooming products and even a candy dish thoughtfully placed by the door. Your mom would be happy – and so will you.

My Mind To Yours
Fully Integrated Circuitry A four- minute video available on the Facebook site, “Your Amazing Body” seeks to answer the question, “what happens to your brain while you sleep?” My wish for everyone is that nothing happens TO their brains while they sleep, because, as the video and much of neuroscience suggests, a lot is happening in our brains while we sleep. Sleep occurs in stages. Stage 1 sleep is light sleep. Brain wave activity is a bit slower than when we’re awake. We breathe normally, and, during stage 1, as our muscles relax, sleepers sometimes feel our bodies move suddenly and involuntarily as we transition away from wakefulness. Those of us who practice yoga, sometimes contract and release our muscles so we can fall asleep a bit more easily. During stage 2 sleep, we are less easily awakened. Our brainwaves continue to slow; our muscles relax sporadically in fits and starts; our heart rate slows, and our body temperature cools. Sleep experts suggest that people sleep in a cool, dark room. Sleep stages 3 and 4 are known as sometimes referred to as slow wave sleep, deep sleep or delta wave sleep. Delta waves are slow frequency, high strength brainwaves. The body is immobile and there is no eye movement. During deep sleep, blood pressure falls, breathing slows further, and body temperatures drops even lower. Paradoxically, it is during deep sleep that children might experience night terrors, sleep walk, or wet the bed.
Jennifer Goodell
Sleep experts theorize that the amount of deep sleep we naturally get is based on the amount of deep sleep we need. For this reason, scientists theorize that deep delta wave sleep is involved with learning, physical recovery and ongoing central nervous system change. And, as we get older, we seem to spend less time in this deep sleep. Dreaming is often associated with the stage of sleep known as REM sleep. REM sleep involves rapid eye movement and, often, vivid dreaming. Dreaming, however can occur in all stages of sleep throughout the sleep cycle (which would explain why sleepwalking and night terrors occur during non-REM, deep sleep). During REM sleep, the heart rate increases, and breathing becomes irregular. The eyes move quickly under the eyelids while the body’s muscles seem unable to continued on pg 42

Roast the poblano peppers in an oven on BROIL, not too close to the heat source for 15 minutes, or until the skins puff up and char. FLip them halfway through to get both sides. Remove from heat, cool slightly, then peel off the skins. Slice the poblano peppers in half lengthwise and scoop out the insides. Set onto a large baking dish. Add the shrimp to a mixing bowl and coat with 1 teaspoon olive oil. Toss with Cajun seasonings. Heat a pan to medium heat and add 1 teaspoon olive oil. Cook the onion and peppers about 5 minutes, softening them up. Add the garlic and cook another minute. Scoop the mixture into a large mixing bowl. Cook the shrimp in the same pan a couple minutes per side, until cooked through. Cool and chop. Into a mixing bowl they go. Add cheeses, basil and hot sauce (if using). Mix well. Scoop the mixture into the peppers and bake 20-30 minutes at 375 degrees F, to your preference. Top with fresh cilantro, spicy chili flakes, and serve with extra hot sauce! Serves 2.

Fully Integrated Circuitry continued from pg 40 move. The reading I’ve done about REM sleep suggests that during this phase, the brain may be working harder than it does when we are awake. As we cycle through sleep, the REM phases increase in duration as we get closer to waking. REM related muscle immobility likely occurs to protect us from physically acting out our dreams, or, perhaps, our memories. Those of us who have delved into dream analysis generally keep notebooks on our nightstands, so we can write down our dreams before we forget them. Neuroscientists suggest that dreaming and REM sleep reviews, replays and consolidates our experiences into our memory. Physical brain trauma such as concussion, surgical alterations and stroke, are known to impact immediate memory formation and storage. These injuries also interfere with the normal sleep cycles involved in memory consolidation. It was not that long ago that neuroscientists began to theorize that REM sleep and its physical eye movement was involved in the brain’s neural and synaptic development both in utero and throughout life. I believe, in keeping with psychiatrist Carl Jung’s belief in cultural archetypes, during childhood, our minds begin to store beliefs and theories that are taught to us and our own individualized experiential memories. Such experience and teachings don’t always agree, leaving us to sort things out over a lifetime. And while Jung’s mentor, Sigmund Freud, believed that children don’t begin to form memories until two or three, it seems more logical to believe that children don’t store memories coded in language until children learn and understand the words associated with their daily and felt experiences. The fact that very young children experience nightmares suggests that children’s brains replay physical pain, fear, and other feelings. Our bodies and muscles have memory. Dogs don’t articulate their opinions or describe their adventures to us at the end of the day. Still, anyone who has had a dog has likely seen that dog’s feet move, as if running, while the dog is asleep. Sadly, many lab animals, including human beings, have been tormented and deprived of sleep to see what happens. Sleeplessness causes cognitive and mental breakdown. Sleeplessness can kill you. While we are asleep, our brains, while consolidating memories, pruning or connecting neurons, also flushes out toxins in a sleep-related increase of its own cerebrospinal fluid. Education researchers and therapists are making connections about how physical movement, including eye movement, integrates physical sensation and thought. Eye movement or eye tracking is used in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, EMDR, a therapy geared toward alleviating the panic and anxiety associating with post-traumatic stress. Postconcussion therapy often includes eye movement exercises thought to integrate the brain hemispheres. Our eyes move naturally and quickly when we sleep. And, despite our mindover-matter dichotomies and beliefs that we are somehow separate from our bodies, we all must sleep. Nature provides us with fully integrated circuitry, operating 24/7, designed to keep us alive, healthy, and consciously aware.
