Having received many accolades for his efforts there, most noteably Ceili Rain—which Billboard Magazine hailed as a band “that the whole world should see”— he stays busy on the road as well. In fact, at the time of this writing Bob is heading back home to Syracuse after visiting Iowa where Ceili Rain performed Halligan’s music written for Alfred Hitchcock’s silent film, “The Lodger” at the Julien Dubuque International Film Festival earlier in April. Mr. Halligan was recently the only American invited to sing at a Papal gathering of 100,000 people in Italy, and met Pope Francis. The accolades go on and on: Con-

temporary Christian Rock song of the Year, 1989: “I Can, I Will” co-written with and recorded by (fellow Syracusan) Rick Cua. He was nominated for a CableACE award in 1992 for the song “Let Me Be Your Friend” for Best Original Song. Appeared in the Nickeloeon show “Roundhouse.” Here at home he is an Adjunct Professor at Syracuse University, where he teaches songwriting, film scoring, music business and a Beatles class. I saw Bob over the past month while preparing and performing in the BeatleCuse show. I had the privilege of singing a tune on which he was playing keyboards. Chuck Schiele: You’ve been at it for some time. How and when did you get started in music? Bob Halligan, Jr: Wrote my first song in 1968, but played in my first band in 1965. CS: What are your primary instruments? BH: Piano is home, but I also play guitar, bass and a bit of harmonica. I’m a singer first & foremost. CS: So, what have you been up to for the better part of your musical life? BH: I played in CNY with Steak Nite 1972 through 1979. Then Pictures from 1979 thru 1982. I got my first publishing deal with United Artists Music in 1979 thru 1982. First hit was “The Best of Me” by Clout in 1980. After that, I had a publishing deal with Screen Gems/EMI 1983-1986. I owned and operated Oppernockity Tunes from 1986 through 1994 and then sold it to BMG Songs in 1995. Ceili Rain started in 1995. We’re still going. CS: Wow. Quite the yellow-brick-road you’ve been on. What are you doing now? Is Ceili Rain your primary focus? BH: Ceili Rain is my life’s work, but I am also Paul in Beatlemania Stage Show and have a one-man show called PaulTheBeatle. Also have been teaching music courses at SU for 10 years. CS: You do Beatles superbly Sir Halligan, Jr. Superbly. What are the better moments of your career you remember most? Summer Movie Preview After a winter that seemed as if it would never end, we have finally reached the point where we can pack away the mittens, and bust out the shorts. These changes mean something different to every person, but for me, it means that the summer movie season is just around the corner. Here are a look at some of the big names coming out over the course of the next few months.

This summer, Disney will be reacquainting audiences with one of their most lucrative brands and popular characters with PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES.

Relying heavily on the time honored classics that established the studio as the king of family films, they began to produce live-action remakes of beloved animated features such as CINDERELLA, PETE’S DRAGON, THE JUNGLE BOOK, and most recently, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. This summer, however, they aren’t cracking open the archives, but rather, reacquainting audiences with one of their most lucrative brands and popular characters. It’s been 14 years since the release of the fourth installment in the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN franchise (ON STRANGER TIDES) was released, and there are questions abound as to the relevancy and necessity of another chapter in the billion dollar franchise. Conventional wisdom dictates that this installment will be bigger, bolder, and more beautiful than those that have come before it. Considering that special effects and set-pieces were one of the reasons that PIRATES thrived as well as it did, there is little doubt that DEAD MEN will be chock full of bombastic visuals. What I want to know is, will there be a narrative to drive the film, or will it simply be a flashy rehash of the same high sea hijinks that comprised at Ontario Orchard the original movies? With returning characters such as Barbossa (GeofMAY 26 OCTOBER 1 frey Rush,) Elizabeth Swan (Keira Knightley,) and Will Turner (Orlando FRIDAY SUNDAY 11 7 Bloom) it will be interesting to see whether they find a way to add new life and levity to the litany of familiar faces. The true test of PIRATES won’t revolve around plotlines or effects, but rather, the public’s opinion of star Johnny Depp. There is no franchise without the lovable Captain Catering Available Jack Sparrow, but after a string of flops, and ugly allegations of abuse from his ex-wife Amber Heard, DEAD 7735 ST. ROUTE 104 MEN will serve as the litmus test of OSWEGO, NY whether or not Depp still carries the clout he did when the original films at the peak of their popularity. RELEASE DATE: MAY 26, 2017

Within the lexicon of Pixar feature length films, there are many who would place CARS 2 at the bottom of the heap. Some were rankled by the fact that its James Bond-like plotline was a bit too intense for younger viewers, while others disliked the fact that Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) became the main protagonist, while Lighting McQueen (Owen Wilson) was relegated to a supporting role. In my opinion, these diversions from the original were far less troublesome, and while it certainly did not measure up to the original CARS, it was still entertaining enough to rise above the typical family fare. It remains to be seen where the CARS franchise goes from here. Will director Brian Fee and the rest of his crew get back to the basics that made the original such an endearing hit, or will they continue to push boundaries and provide viewers with a new narrative on familiar characters? If the recent release of the official trailer for the film is any indication, it looks like Lightning McQueen will once again become the focal point of the franchise. The trailer, and indeed the first poster released for CARS 3, had a dark tone to it, and it appears that the narrative will be a bit more complex than the spy-centric adventure that the second installment was. Bringing together familiar favorites like McQueen, Mater, Luigi (Tony Shalhoub,) and Sally (Bonnie Hunt,) while introducing new characters Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer) and Sterling (Nathan Fillion,) there is little doubt that the filmmakers heard the harsh criticisms aimed at CARS 2, and will go to great lengths to prove that the franchise continues to remain a relevant entity for Pixar. RELEASED DATE: JUNE 16, 2017

the same over-the-top, fireworkfueled sequences as some of its big budget contemporaries, its special effects were absolutely stunning. Featuring excellent turns by Andy Serkis as the incredibly intelligent Caesar, the films made you somehow forget that the apes themselves weren’t real. Within the confines of their cinematic universe, they were completely believable, and more importantly, sympathetic. Though the original PLANET OF THE APES exuded an endearingly cheesy charm, this new incarnation is far more visceral. Both RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES and DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES built drama steadily throughout their respective stories, ratcheting up the tension with each and every scene. They were as stunning to look at as they were frightening to behold, and as the series inches ever closer to the eradication of the human race, I would imagine (and desperately hope) that the quality of the productions matches their lofty ambitions. The finale of DAWN was shockingly brutal, and with Matt Reeves returning to direct this follow-up, you can expect WAR to explore the psychology the drives Caesar and his crew, and the lengths that they will go in order to preserve their place in the world. After languishing for years in limbo, an adaptation of Stephen King’s THE DARK TOWER is finally being released on the big screen. For the sake of objectivity, I should mention that I am a pretty big, well, okay, a HUGE fan of King’s magnum opus. Stretched out over the course of 8 complex stories, the series focused on the quest of Gunslinger Roland Deschain (played Idris Elba in the film) as he yearns to defeat the Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey) and reach the elusive and mysterious Dark Tower. Like PIRATES, there are innumerable questions to be answered in regards to THE DARK TOWER, the most pressing of which is how King’s complex and metaphysical tale will translate to film. There is a thoroughly fascinating world that is introduced and explored in the 4,250 pages of material that King produced. TOWER contains elements of multiple genres, including drama, sci-fi, horror, and spaghetti western. For director Nikolaj Arcel to condense all of these elements into a 2 hour film will be no easy task. There had been a long-running belief that THE DARK TOWER was going to be produced as a television series as opposed to a set of films, and being familiar with King’s source material, I always thought this would have been the correct course of action. With so many characters and plotlines that are essential to the progression of the MIDDLE-EASTERN & GREEK tale, it will essentially be up to Arcel and crew as to whether or not there will be any future films. Mix Up Your Game With a Beer Cocktail With spring in full swing in Central New York, we open our sunroofs, dust off the flip-flops, and grill to our heart’s content. For me, nothing marks the season than sipping on lighter beer style – lagers, pilsners, and wheat beers are just some that come to mind. Another way to enjoy beer during this time is via the beer cocktail – usually a combination of beer with other ingredients. While it may sound like an oxymoron to purists who wouldn’t mix anything with their beloved brew – beer cocktails have been around for quite some time. My introduction to these interesting mixes was the Black and Tan, a combination of a stout and a light ale. I then moved on to the Snakebite, a refreshing mix of a stout and hard cider. Other common beer cocktails are the Black Velvet (stout and Champagne), the German Radler or British Shandy (lighter beer mixed with carbonated lemonade, ginger beer or ginger ale) and the Irish Car Bomb (a shot of Irish cream and whiskey dropped into a stout). You don’t have to go to an Irish pub to get these drinks; most places that serve these types of beer will create the mixture of your choice.

The Benefit of Exercise I have written in the last year about interesting or exciting innovations like the Cognivue test which is the first and only FDA approved machine to test for dementia. I have written about the Pharmanex scanner to assess your nutritional / antioxidant status. I have written about the chronic care program sponsored by Medicare. These are all up-to-date, next generation/new wave issues but today I want to write about one of the bedrock issues of medicine which is the benefit of exercise. Everyone knows that exercise and eating right are good for you, in fact, it’s so well known that you spend very little time with your doctor discussing it. That’s a shame because the benefits are dramatic and sustainable and I think that the proof of this should be brought up on a regular basis. We doctors have recommended a lot of things that in the end didn’t turn out to be true or meaningful. We told her to avoid eggs and that isn’t right. We told you to cut down the meat and the fats in your diet and that’s wrong as well. Years ago and still recently we said increase the carbohydrates in your diet and we know how wrong that is. We used to use leeches, we still do but in medically appropriate setting now. So If I’m going to recommend something I’d better back it up with up to date science. The research found that there was a very direct correlation between exercise capacity and adverse cardiovascular events. -The more fit you were the less likely a heart attack or stroke etc. The difference in mortality between the least fit and the most fit was quite dramatic. Finally, the American Journal of medicine in 2016 published study that evaluated the impact of cardiorespiratory fitness levels on the risk of developing atherosclerosis -(hardening of the arteries). As you know the conventional wisdom is that the higher your cholesThe more fit you were the less likely a heart attack or stroke etc. The difference in mortality terol the more hardening of the arteries between the least fit and the most fit was quite you’ll have. They basically followed people like myself with very high cholesterol levels who were also vigorous exercisers to see if the vigorous exercise could counteract the effects of the high cholesterol levels. They found, in fact, that if you had regular vigorous exercise it was amazingly protective of the heart despite the high cholesterol levels. So, three articles published within the last year all confirm the various benefits of exercise. It protects the brain. It protects the heart. You don’t have to belong to a gym to get good exercise. Of course in this part of the country the other important thing to remember is that you have to weatherproof your exercise. So many people tell me that they don’t get out of the house much in the winter. Imagine leaving your car in the garage over the winter and trying to start it reliably come spring. There are many places like Destiny, Wal-Mart and Wegmans that have been enclosed areas you can walk in. Soon with Uber coming you won’t have any excuses left. The great thing about exercise is it doesn’t really require prescription from the doctor. It doesn’t require special outfits. It doesn’t require special training places. It doesn’t require hours and hours of your time every day. You can do it alone or you can do it with other people. You can do it indoor or out. You can do it daytime or nighttime. There is no real reason that you can’t get started today to improve itself a little bit every day physically and for that matter mentally. Next month we will again bring you something cutting edge, at least for Syracuse. Until then get well and stay well.

My 16 year old self would consider this downright blasphemous, but there is no denying that streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu have emerged as the modern equivalent to the local video stores that dotted the map in every town in America for the better part of the ‘80’s and ‘90’s. The flat that the vampires live in is almost a character in itself, and serves as the perfect encapsulation of why this production succeeded beyond all measurable expectations. There is something special about “What We Do in the Shadows,” and at times, it is difficult to pinpoint exactly what it is. Outwardly, it seems like just another your typical mockumentary fare, but throughout the entire duration of the film, it is uproariously funny, and stuffed with enough jokes, sight gags, and deadpan humor that it separates itself from its comedic contemporaries. Toying with the conventions that a century worth of vampire flicks have unleashed upon the world, Clement and Waititi constantly find clever ways to pay homage while remaining true to their hundreds of predecessors. The Wine-Buying Habits of Millennials I can confidently say that every one of my friends likes wine, to some degree. If they don’t like it, they love it. It is growing more and more evident that consumer demand is changing as boomers buy less wine and Millennials buy more.

1980 and 1995. I, myself, am a millennial, so articles like this always grab my attention. Also, because the Trail’s promotions committee has had many discussions about how to capture the attention of the millennial market. That conversation always entails a debate on whether they’re the right market to be targeting, given their general lack of expendable income. Among my friends, the desire to drink wine is evident. I cannot, however, say that they have a particular brand loyalty. We certainly have a Finger Lakes preference, but it’s not always an option if we are gathering at one of their homes in Boston, Nashville or Queens. In that case, purchasing decisions are made on a more whimsical basis, like the color of the bottle, the design of the label and inevitably, price (we’re all laden with significant student loan payments). The article references Bob McMillan, founder of the Silicon Valley Bank’s Wine Division. According to studies, McMillan reports that baby boomers are still dominating the wine market. Millennials, however, are greatly affecting the lower-priced wine segments, wine between $8 and $14. McMillan credits Millennials with frugality, something I can relate to. The good news on this is that I can recommend an entire list of CLWT wines that fit this profile, both delicious and affordable. their experience via social media. After all, word-of-mouth is the most effective form of marketing. We’re human and we trust the recommendations of our comrades. My favorite quote of McMillan’s is “… wine as a subject is daunting and the younger generation is impatient. They want what they want, when they want it and it’s confusing … .” There’s mention of how younger wine consumers often prefer to drink blends, or wines made with a combination of various grape juices because they come across as less complicated. Wines that are tied to specific varietals, such as Chardonnay or Merlot, are confusing to a consumer who may not know if that particular varietal is typically sweet or dry. Then, add in vintages, and it grows more complicated. The customer may fear choosing a wine from a “bad year.” So, we’re seeing many more red blends, or table wines that have neither varietal nor vintage associated with them fly off the shelves. It is growing more and more evident that consumer demand is changing as boomers buy less wine and Millennials buy more. McMillan claims “Today (boomers) are being replaced one-for-one by the frugal young millennials.” So, it’s my prediction that as Millennials become the largest consumer market segment, that they (we) are certainly worth targeting. We tried the Seyval Blanc (a little and crisp white with attractive aromas of apricots, peaches and nectarines, R.S. 1%), Vidal Blanc (a slightly sweet and light white with a fruity finish and sweet grapefruit and pineapple aromas R.S. 1.6%), Baco Noir (A deeply pigmented wine, fruitforward, with aromas of black fruits and caramel R.S. .3%), and Perplexity 2013 (an complex yet refreshing red with a harmony of flavors including hints of blueberry, black cherry, spices, chocolate and vanilla. This dish has the perfect balance of flavor and spice and it is sure to please and “Greens” lover! We had a hard time deciding on entrees but we really wanted to make sure we tried dishes that incorporated their wine. I decided on Parker’s Pasta, a large portion of Cheese tortellini, sautéed shrimp, baby spinach, and grape tomatoes finished in a butter, lemon and garlic, Greenwood Chardonnay sauce. This dish was not only stunning to look at with all of the colorful ingredients but it was absolutely scrumptious. Syracuse – Standing Tall PREFACE One very important responsibility I have to you in this column is to never falsely offend. The substance of his article requires this explanation. A brief preface is necessary lest this article give an appearance of good governing by a dispassionate leader. Our Mayor Stephanie Minor has twisted law to make legal what otherwise is illegal. This caused a corruption that destroyed lives leaving suffering victims in dismay over the degree of unfairness and wrong. Our Mayor displaced several City and City Hall Employees with cruelty and unfair reason. Our Mayor insulted and then held vendetta against several Councilors of her own party for mere disagreement, which is the heart of our Democracy ( … and proceeded to ruin them). Our Mayor is not a good leader or a good person. She has, for selfish and revolting reason, forfeited the integrities of honorable democracy. She has abused her power and hurt many, purely without regard. She would change her Sanctuary City stance in less than a heartbeat if it were politically advantageous —without even looking back as the suffering went on. A selfish good deed does not lessen the guilt of one otherwise cruel.

In Abraham Lincoln’s anti-slavery Cooper Union Address in New York City on February 27, 1860 – he concluded: LET US HAVE FAITH THAT RIGHT MAKES MIGHT, AND IN THAT FAITH, LET US, TO THE END, DARE TO DO OUR DUTY AS WE UNDERSTAND IT. The Arc of History bends toward Justice. We must never lose sight of that pursuit. The second paragraph in the Declaration of Independence states, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that “All” Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” Feb 14, 2014 Contradiction: ARTICLE I, SECTION 2, CLAUSE 3 --- Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including “those bound to Service” for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons. Contradiction: ARTICLE 4, SECTION 2, CLAUSE 3 --- Fugitive Slave Clause --- No Person held to Service or Labour in one State, under the Laws thereof, escaping into another, shall, in Consequence of any Law or Regulation therein, be discharged from such Service or Labour, but “shall be delivered up on Claim of the Party to whom such Service or Labour may be due”. Benjamin Franklin wrote following Negotiations in London in 1775: “A little before I left London, being at the House of Lords during a debate in which Lord Camden spoke, I was much disgusted from the ministerial side by many base reflections on American courage, religion, and understanding, in which we were treated with the utmost contempt as the lowest of mankind, and almost of a different species from the English of Britain”. Benjamin Franklin was humiliated at this meeting of the elite British Privy, (advisors to the King). Slaves had no recourse but servitude or die. On September 18, 1850 one of many horrible laws was passed. It was referred to as the Fugitive Slave Law. Also referred to as the “Bloodhound” law for the dogs that were used to track down runaway slaves. The law required that Northerners who opposed slavery participate in the hunting down of runaway slaves and the returning of them to bondage. Once returned, they were subject to torture or death or being worked to death as a slave-holders twisted example. Syracuse, like many Northern cities refused to obey this law. Syracuse was first among the northern cities in its opposition to the Fugitive Slave Law. All the men of color who worked on the canals, and in the shops as citizens of Syracuse were Syracuse citizens. And Syracuse would not abide by a law that would require these Northern men to live by Southern values, “Period.” The law itself was designed to take those who opposed slavery and turn them into slave Hunters. Abraham Lincoln had it right when he said “there is a right and a wrong to the thing.” Northerners were repulsed by Southerners enslaving their fellow man and they would not participate. This was asking too much. Again, “Period.” With the election of President Trump apparently a majority of the Electoral College has determined that we are now a country that does not want Brown immigrants and wants to send them back. To majorities in the great middle portion of this country that supported Trump this seems like justice, but to those of us in the Northeast and elsewhere, the actual majority of Americans, this seems to betray who we are. We can accept President Trump is our President and that he has the right to propose laws and have them passed if he can get a majority of the Congress to agree with him, but it is an entirely different thing to say that we have to become slave hunters. When the police officers we pay are required to grab every Brown citizen they stop and ask them to show their papers, we become the slave hunters and our dollars are used to put chains on our fellow

Frederick Douglas and Harriett Tubman were among the Central, New York unsung heroes that silently protected those escaping the evil in humanity that had diminished them. On October 1, 1851 William “Jerry” Henry, a slave escaping captivity, was found by authorities and arrested in Syracuse. To his good fortune an anti-slavery convention was being held in Syracuse on that same day. As “Jerry” lay despairing in his jail cell, pondering the punishment and pain that lay in his captured future, heroes of the day were at work. That same evening several hundred abolitionists stormed the Jail, freed Jerry and saw to his safe transport through the Underground Railroad system to freedom. Fast forward 166 years: Laws regarding immigration and proper vetting to insure safe American assimilation and deporting “serious criminals” make good moral, just and safe sense. It is our insistence on punishing those that are already here as a result of decades of welcoming attitudes that is so brutally wrong. Especially in the age of “Trump” where things are not thought out. Innocence will be swept up experiencing the terror of far lessor lands. Personal prejudices among localities and enforcers will be determinates rather than humane and American thought out rules. This makes Sanctuary Cities a crucial and tragic requisite as we have become perpetrators of the very kinds of “human rights violations” that we condemn around the world. A great fault in the media is that they overlook history. Their pursuit of ratings has ruined the influences this country needs. History is Destiny. Where have they been for 70 years? Every American should know this. Mexicans were as much American heroes of World War II as anyone from the Greatest Generation in support of the War. Their purpose was as important as Rosie the Riveter to the war effort. Together they insured the food supply and the strength of the U.S. economy during the War years. We recruited them by the 10’s of thousands. Legality did not matter. America wanted and needed them. In the years after the war illegal immigration was of little concern, as they were wanted and welcomed by the corporate world and leaders of the time. They were Heroes. By the end of the Korean War, illegal immigration had become a fixture of the U.S. agricultural economy. Establishing roots and families was a natural consequence. “What we need in the United States is not division; what we need in the United States is not hatred; what we need in the United States is not violence or lawlessness, but love and wisdom, and compassion toward one another, and a feeling of justice towards those who still suffer within our country.” Robert F. Kennedy, 1968 Speech on the Assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. Indianapolis, Indiana 166 years after “Jerry” was rescued and 152 years after slavery was abolished we still live in a land where others are viewed as unwelcome. We have a dark side that we must never lose sight of less it overwhelm. This deportation issue involving as many as 20 million Mexicans is very dark and very disturbing. They all must live in fear. Apart from the absolute absurd departure from the American way, their heroic contribution during World War II is all but forgotten. This human unfairness diminishes what we fought for. This is not what we do. At least not in the America I try so hard to believe in. In any instance, where we sublimate another human being we are failing every hope there is for this land to be a beacon for mankind. The Equality embraced in our Constitution gave birth to the hope that mankind could one day live together in peace. Add remaining garlic, lemon juice, parsley, and red pepper flakes and stir, 2 minutes, then add shrimp and season with salt. Cook shrimp until pink, 3 to 4 minutes, then add remaining 1/2 cup wine. Bring to a simmer, then add shrimp mixture and Parmesan to risotto and stir until combined and creamy.
