The holidays begin on Broadway
Come one, come all to the annual tree lighting and ‘Sound of Music’ sing-along
Audiences will kick off the holiday season and sing to their heart’s delight with the Von Trapp family over Thanksgiving weekend. The Sound of Music SingAlong is a worldwide phenomenon that will return to the Broadway Center’s Pantages Theater on Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. A long Tacoma tradition will immediately follow the film with the 67th Annual Holiday Tree Lighting with festivities in the Pantages lobby and the lighting at 9th and Broadway. Film tickets are $24 and the tree lighting ceremony is a free community event. The Sound of Music Sing-Along is a screening of the classic Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer film in full-screen Technicolor, complete with subtitles for the audience to sing along. The show begins with a warm-up to review the complimentary “magic moments
pack,” which contains fun props like a curtain swatch and Edelweiss to flaunt during special times during the Academy Award-winning movie.

Costumes are encouraged! The famous fancydress competition brings audience members onto the stage before the movie to showcase their fantastic tailoring skills, nuns, lonely goatherd, and girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes. Creativity counts and ticket vouchers will be awarded to the best dressed. After a festival debut in May 1999, The Sound of Music Sing-Along began showing at the Prince Charles Cinema in London’s West End (and has been there ever since). From there the program began its UK tour and now is touring to many cities around the world. The Pantages lobby will open at 5 p.m. to the community for the 67th annual Holiday Tree Lighting. Complimentary hot cider will be served, Santa Claus will make a special visit and the crowd will gather around the tree for the lighting ceremony and holiday group photo. The Pantages Theater has been the site for the City of Tacoma’s holiday tree lighting ceremony since 1945 and originally began as a celebration of the end of WWII. Tickets for The Sound of Music Sing Along are on sale now for $24. Tickets may be purchased through the Broadway Center box office at (253) 591-5894, tollfree 1 (800) 291-7593, visit in person at 901 Broadway in Tacoma’s Theater District or online anytime at www. broadwaycenter.org

Franciscan Polar Plaza Returns Downtown Tacoma ice rink in Tollefson Plaza set to renew holiday spirit for another season
The people of Tacoma must have been good this year because generous organizations are contributing to a wonderful holiday event. Franciscan Health System, Tacoma Art Museum, Columbia Bank, TitusWill and Korsmo Construction are bringing Franciscan Polar Plaza, the popular, covered, open-air ice rink back to the heart of downtown Tacoma at Tollefson Plaza. Beginning Nov. 23 and open through Jan. 6, the community is invited to skate and embrace the spirit of the season. “We heard a lot of positive comments [about Polar
Plaza] from the community,” said Franciscan’s Gale Robinette. “Our mission is to create healthier communities. This gives families a place to spend quality time together during the holidays.” The rink will be 20 percent larger than last year. The seating area will also be larger to accommodate more skaters and their watchful friends and relatives. Ice Rink Events staff will also be on the ice to help keep the skaters stay merry. Admission will be $8 and $2 for skate rental. Military members and seniors (65+) receive $1 off admission.
Skates will be available in a variety of sizes, from a child’s size 8 through an adult size 14. There will be music and warm holiday refreshments such as coffee, tea and hot chocolate for sale at Franciscan Polar Plaza. There will also be a chance to buy your holiday tree at 25Trees. Keep an eye out for special themed nights, live music performances, art activities and more! “We hope to welcome 18,000 skaters to the new and improved rink,” said Cameron Fellows, deputy director of Tacoma Art Museum. “With more space to skate, more seating, better ice and some great community partnerships, it’s going to be a lot of fun.” New to this year’s holiday tradition is the Polar Plaza Express, a small train that visitors ride from the Washington State History Museum to Tacoma Art Museum. The train will roll down Pacific Avenue from Dec. 21-24 as well as Dec. 26, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closing early at 1 p.m. on Dec. 24). Riders may hop on board for $2 each way; there’s a discounted rate of $1 for members of the Washington State History Museum and Tacoma Art Museum. Anyone interested in volunteering at Polar Plaza should call (253) 722-2454 or e-mail PolarPlaza@ TacomaArtMuseum.org to take part in this event. Those interested in participating as a sponsor, can call (253) 722-2455 or e-mail Contributions@ TacomaArtMuseum.org.

Sometimes the best revenge is a screaming rubber chicken ally go shopping.
By Ernest A. Jasmin ejasmin@tacomaweekly.com
Northwesterners are known for passive-aggressiveness, much like New Yorkers are known for being a tad picky about pizza. “You call that a slice? Faggedaboudit!” But why fight it? Embrace the stereotype this holiday season by turning the normally selfless act of gift-giving into a veiled act of aggression. Using children as buffers can only help obscure your evil intent (you sick, little monkey). In that spirit, we present five toys to buy for little people whose parents you secretly hate. The best part: Most are available from Amazon. com for those too passive to actu-
Screaming rubber chicken ($8, Toysmith) If someone gives this to your kid, they clearly hate you. Stop inviting them over for dinner; don’t bother making small talk when you pass on the street. You’re probably justified in repeatedly punching the gift giver in the face upon receiving this parental torture device.

Can’t be that bad, right? Wrong! Picture, if you will, one of those novelty chickens that have been around forever. Then imagine that, every time your 3-year-old squeezes it, it approximates the sound of an asthmatic donkey screaming into a megaphone while being clawed to death by a thousand rabid cats. Yeah, something like that. This is the sort of thing lying to children was made for. “Um, where’s Chickie?” “He went away to chicken heaven.” It’s either that or suffer the nervous breakdown that comes with prolonged exposure.

Let’s face it. Cheerleaders are nice to look at, but their asinine chants are best enjoyed at a sporting event where the crowd mostly drowns them out. But thanks to Munchkin, you can disturb the quiet of your frienemies’ home with this creepy little doll’s high-pitched cheering. Added bonus: One of her cheers will have 2 In A Room’s “Wiggle It” - one of the worst songs ever made - stuck in your victim’s head on the daily. That’ll teach ‘em to borrow your power drill and not return it.
3
Shout N’ Shoot (Cap Toys) This amazing advance in obnoxious toy technology was pioneered in the ‘90s. Basically, it’s a head-mounted squirt gun that’s activated by shouting. ‘Nuff said. Strangely, this
device did not enjoy lasting popularity, and you’ll have to score one on eBay or at your local thrift store.

Black Barrel-o-Slime ($1.66, Rhode Island Novelty) This is a variation on the classic “slime” toy that’s been around for decades. You know the drill. It’ll get everywhere until the little crumb cruncher inevitably loses it. Months later, it will be found, hardened, behind the couch. See also: PlayDoh. (Man, you really are a passiveaggressive jerk. Maybe you should seek counseling.)
From Furby to Tickle Me Elmo, every holiday season presents some annoying, talking toy that has idiots trampling each other at Toys R’ Us to get ‘em. But few can compare to this cuddly but irksome critter, which not only talks, he repeats everything you say. Baseball bat for smashing not included.

Give thoughtful gifts this year Here are seven ways to make your holiday shopping a whole lot easier – and meaningful
By Kathleen Merryman kathleen@tacomaweekly.com
This is still a tricky economic year in Santa Land, but a good chance to rethink the nature of gifts and how to keep them local, festive, yet practical. As an over-exuberant gift-giver who has no clue about what young people – or older people with good taste – might like, I’m sometimes a trial for the people I love. They end up at the mall being shocked by how little I paid for their gift, or they’ll wear it once to make me think they like it.
This list has the advantage of keeping stuff out of the landfill. • The gift of health. I wish I’d listened a year ago when my sister-inlaw talked about not having medical insurance and being afraid of getting shingles. We could have treated her to the $250-plus vaccine. (If you knew her, you’d see she’s worth way more than that.) If we’d done it, she’d have had a pain-free summer. This year, before I buy them something they’ll have to return to Macy’s, I’ll see how she and her hubby are set for flu and pertussis protection. • The gift of healthy food, and
deep hipness. Tacomans are garden-besotted. The city is close to tops in the nation for community gardens per capita. Whole neighborhoods – check out Fawcett Avenue – are growing food on their lawns and planting strips. And, hey, it’s November, when gardening stuff goes on sale to free up space for holiday decorations. I’ll endeavor to lead a nephew’s family from Seattle into this golden age of green. They’re getting a basket of sturdy tools, gloves and seeds. I will rub in the superiority of the South Sound with two indigenous products: Ed Hume seeds and a big bag of Tagro potting soil. • The gift of patience. My apartment-dwelling pals will get spring in a tub – planters filled with a rich mix of that Tagro soil and Puyallup Valley daffodil bulbs. • The gift of a small, everyday luxury. A great (in all ways) aunt once
told me, “I have everything. If you still want to give me something, soap would be nice.” Nice soap works the same way for people who don’t have everything they need. Handmade locally and sold at a boutique, imported and on sale at a discount grocer, in bulk at the warehouse store, there is a good fit for every taste. • The gift of not having to call home for money. We have kids off to college or settling into their first apart-
Page 7
ments. We are finding out where they buy schoolbooks, get their car fixed or forage for food. They’ll get the right gift certificates. • The gift of history, exercise and companionship, all for free. Tacoma+Pierce Chamber has five nifty Walk Tacoma guides as part of its Downtown On the Go! Program (dotg@tacomachamber.org). You can look for them at local merchants or the Chamber, or simply download them. Make dates to walk, talk and read your way through each of the five routes: The
Hometown Holidays
Brewery District, Hilltop, Wright Park, North Waterfront and South Waterfront. The routes are about a mile and a half, and come with a difficulty rating. • The gift of being a good citizen of the world. This is the season of fair trade gift festivals, and St. Leo Parish and Urban Grace Church ring it in with their Holiday Market of fair trade and locally-sourced items Nov. 16-18 at Catholic Community Services, 1323 S. Yakima Ave. Hours are: 4-7 p.m. Friday, 1-7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.
