ith roughly 15,000 students and a few thousand more faculty and staff, on any given day the University of Montana functions very much like a miniature city. There are restaurants, campus police, places to get your hair cut and a wide variety of entertainment options to explore. So big is the campus, sometimes it can be overwhelming when you need
advice or are wrestling with a big-life topic and don’t know where to turn. The following are few helpful resources to turn to:
n Rhondie Voorhees, dean of students, 022 Main Hall, 243-6413,
rhondie.voorhees@umontana.edu.
n Jessica Weltman, director of equal opportunity and affirmative action, Title IX coordinator,

Mountain bikers ride in the 61,000-acre Rattlesnake National Recreation Area.
UM offers many opportunities for recreation, fitness By MEGAN MAROLF for the Missoulian

t’s not hard to get outside and explore in a town surrounded by acres of national forests and wilderness, and with mountains jutting up from the edge of campus. The University of Montana Outdoor Program through Campus Recreation is a good place to start for almost every outdoor activity imaginable. Students can rent stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, canoes, mountain bikes and camping equipment for reasonable rates.
For those who need some instruction before diving into the outdoor mecca surrounding Missoula, the Outdoor Program offers classes on kayaking, fly fishing and rock climbing. The program also runs day excursions and backpacking trips to peaks in the Bitterroot Mountains and backcountry areas in Glacier National Park and Idaho. For something closer, the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area and Wilderness is a 61,000-acre playground for hikers, backpackers and bikers and accessible by bus. Take Mountain Line’s Route 5 to a path
leading to the main trailhead. Steve Thompson, the director of Campus Recreation, said UM is unique compared to other universities because of the proximity of recreation areas near campus. Students can hop on a bike or hit the trail within minutes of campus, and can rent gear for cheap, he said. “We try and be lower than anything else in town, just because we understand students don’t have a lot of money,” Thompson said. Thompson said Campus Recreation See RECREATION, Page 7

offers something for everyone. “They try rock climbing and they’re like, ‘Maybe that’s not for me,’ but then they love water sports,” Thompson said. He said everyone has a great experience with the Outdoor Program, but some don’t discover it until they’re upperclassmen because of its location. The program is hidden around the corner from the main entrance to the gym. For information about Campus Recreation and the Outdoor Program, visit umt.edu/crec. If taking off into the woods doesn’t sound appealing, or if you’re cramped for time, there are outside activities closer to town. Visible from almost everywhere in Missoula, the “M” Trail on Mount Sentinel is Missoula’s most frequented trail and the university’s backyard. The hike begins in the parking lot east of Aber Hall and Washington-Grizzly Stadium and switchbacks to the concrete letter, a quick hike depending on your fitness level. The true summit of Sentinel is a mile up from the “M,” but worth the views of the entire valley and surrounding mountains. Just across the Van Buren footbridge, Mount Jumbo is often less crowded and offers views of the Rattlesnake Valley if you make it past the “L,” around a 20-minute hike from the trailhead at the east end of Cherry Street. The Kim Williams Trail

Starting near Jacobs Island, the trail runs along the Clark Fork River for more than two miles to East Missoula. But you don’t have to leave campus in order to break a sweat. The Fitness and Recreation Center located at the north end of campus has cardio and weight machines, and three basketball courts. The Adams Center next door is home to the Grizzly Pool. The Recreation Center also offers a variety of classes – from yoga and Pilates to kickboxing and Zumba. The climbing wall, which underwent renovations during summer, has climbs for all levels and a bouldering cave. And students can join a variety of intramural sports.

Sudents can feel good about the food they’re eating on campus, since the University of Montana recently was recognized for its commitment to sustainability. UM Dining won the 2014 Grand Prize for Sustainability at the National Association of College
and University Food Services Annual Conference. Sam Belanger, interim marketing director for UM Dining, said there are many reasons the university won the award. The majority of food waste from the Food Zoo is composted, either on-site at the UM Dining Garden or at the PEAS Farm in the Rattlesnake Valley. And nearly 25 percent of UM Dining’s food expenditures go to Montana farmers through the Farm to College Program. “And we’re always looking for new
ways – how can we be more sustainable, how can we do this better,” Belanger said. Standing in line for the buffets at the Food Zoo, chances are you’ll see eggplant, kale or peppers grown in the UM Dining Garden, which has yielded an average of 1,700 pounds of produce per season since the garden started in 2011. The University Center Food Court has Asian, Mexican and Greek food, as well as a salad bar and a selection of See EATING, Page 9

UM students surrounded by entertainment By MEGAN MAROLF for the Missoulian

issoula is bursting with music, festivals, plays and any other event giving reason to be out on the town, but there are also plenty of activities not far from University of Montana dorms. The University Center, which offers entertainment without stepping a foot off campus, is a good place to start. The UC has an 11-weekend movie series that shows in the 300-seat theatre located on the third floor. Tickets and concessions are cheap, at $3 for a single showing and $4 for a double feature with a Griz Card. Adrianne Donald, associate director of the UC, said any events put on by the UC and the Student Involvement Network focus on at least one of four criteria: learning, leadership, diversity and fun. The events encourage students to meet each other, get involved on campus and learn something at the same time, Donald said. “The first six weeks of school is so exciting for students, because there are so many things they can do to feel connected to campus,” Donald said. And almost everything they organize is free or inexpensive, since the planning committee knows students are low on funds, she said. They also offer workshops on anything from fencing and archery to cooking, Donald said. For information about UC events, visit umt.edu/uc. At the Adams Center, UM Productions organizes concerts such as Dropkick Murpheys and Old Crow Medicine show, two bands that are set to play at the end of September. In October, Dierks Bentley and the Blue Man Group will perform. For more information, visit

Country music star Dierks Bentley returns to the University of Montana’s Adams Center on Saturday, Oct. 11. griztix.com. Any on-campus events – lectures, exhibits, plays and more – can be found at events.umt.edu. For those looking to get off campus and explore, downtown offers plenty of options. The Wilma Theatre, a historic venue located north of the Higgins Avenue Bridge and Caras Park, shows a handful of independent movies every week. The theater also host concerts on a regular basis, featuring a variety of artists. The prices aren’t bad either, depending on the artist. Tickets for movies cost $7.50, or $5.50 for matinees and on Tuesdays. The Wilma also runs documentary film festivals periodically, as well as
the Roxy Theatre and the Crystal Theatre. Also a short walk downtown, the newly renovated Top Hat Lounge entertains on almost a nightly basis, with live shows ranging from reggae music to funk to Missoula’s quintessential band, the Lil’ Smokies. Even during the weekend some shows are free, and many are for ages 18 and older. On Monday nights, the Top Hat plays a movie from the Big Sky Film Series. The nonfiction films are free. The Top Hat also has a restaurant and a happy hour menu, with $4 tapas and flatbreads. Sometimes, the hardest part about living in a college town like Missoula is choosing what to do.

very year, the Associated Students of the University of Montana works to improve students’ commute both to campus and around Missoula. This year is no exception, with new options provided by both ASUM Transportation and Mountain Line, the city’s public bus system.
Missoula has many options for students who choose not to drive to campus, or leave their vehicles in their hometowns altogether. UDash, the university’s bus service, is student-owned through fees and is operated by student drivers. Topher Williams, chair of the ASUM Board of Directors and community outreach coordinator for Mountain Line, says that specific format is unique for a university to have.
“It keeps student money in students’ hands,” Williams said. UDash offers four free color-coded routes that take riders to the College of Technology, Lewis and Clark Villages and downtown. The well-used Gold Line provides service from downtown to campus and the Lewis and Clark Villages every weekend until after 2 a.m. For information about campus See TRANSPORTATION, Page 15

transportation, visit umt.edu/transportation. Mountain Line offers 12 routes that, with a little planning, can take riders to every part of town, including to Southgate Mall, Reserve Street, downtown and the Rattlesnake Valley. Mountain Line also has several Bolt routes with buses that pick up riders every 15 minutes. The turquoise buses have free Wi-Fi and racks for bicycles. Already fare-free for students and professors with their UM identification, Mountain Line will become free for all starting in January. According to Williams, ASUM Transportation and Mountain Line have a cohesive relationship and the same mission – to provide quality transportation to people in Missoula. “Mountain Line and ASUM Transportation have a very strong relationship, and have (had one) for a long time,” Williams said. “There’s such a high demand for transit services, so they work very closely together to ensure there’s enough buses running down the roads.” For information about Mountain Line, visit mountainline.com.

ASUM also provides services for bicyclists. Of the 20,000 people who on campus daily during the academic year, many ride bicycles, Williams said. Because of this, the ASUM board will focus more on cycling in the near future. The transportation office offers two bike checkout programs for students – free two-day rentals or a $35 semester-long option. The office also has a partnership with Missoula Federal Credit Union to provide interest-free bike loans to students. One of Missoula’s newest developments for bicyclists are “fixtations,” do-it-yourself repair stations that provide basic tools like wrenches and air compressors. They also have a vending machine with tire tubes, lights and pressure gauges. Four stations are already in operation, at the Lewis and Clark Villages, near Jesse Hall, at the Missoula Public Library and Mountain Line’s downtown transit center. A fifth will be built at Southgate Mall this fall. For walkers, downtown is just a mile away via Missoula’s Riverfront Trail system. With all the options to get around town at a low cost, Williams challenges incoming students to try to live carless while in college. Because of parking fees and maintenance, he said a vehicle was more of an inconvenience for him. “We have all the amenities of a larger city at an easier grasp for students,” Williams said. “I realized most of everything I needed was either on campus or downtown.”

The modern-looking structure stands next to the Interdisciplinary Science Building, a recently finished development itself. According to Penny Bertram, a Forest Service support services specialist, the new building expands the agency’s facilities and lab space for research projects. Bertram said the Forest Service and UM have an agreement that its human genetics, animal and forest research programs also benefit campus. “It’s a real cooperative venture between us and UM and the students,” Bertram said. “We always welcome students to come in and check us out. But this new building will enable us to bring in more cooperators.” The new building is expected to

whole new series of learning (opportunities) that wouldn’t otherwise happen,” Hohman said. Hohman arrived at the university in 2008 and became involved in archery, swing dancing, Phi Delta Theta fraternity and ASUM senate four years ago. Not knowing what to do when he first came to campus, Hohman used clubs to fill his time and build his resume while getting to know people. According to Hohman, student groups helped open doors for his future. “I’m going off to law school after graduation and the reason why I have a competitive application is because of all my leadership experience in student groups.” Gaining leadership experience and building a resume was why sophomore Shelby Wheeler became involved both with ASUM as a senator
and with the Alpha Phi sorority. However, Wheeler said what she has gained so far is more than a stepping stone into a future in politics. “I think it’s important for people to try new things, you don’t really learn about yourself until you put yourself out there,” Wheeler said. “I found myself within all these things and they molded me into the person I am right now.” Both Wheeler and Hohman agree that leadership experience aside, the people you meet and memories you make through student groups are also meaningful. “It’s a valuable experience regardless of what you want to pursue a career in,” Hohman said. “College is the years where you’re going to meet the friends you’ll have for the rest of your life, and I think that’s really important.” For information about ASUM and student groups, visit life.umt.edu/asum.
