MESSAGE FROM THE GOVERNOR
COUNCIL AND STAFF OF THE MONTANA ARTS COUNCIL
GOVERNOR GREG GIANFORTE
MONTANA HISTORICAL SOCIETY
History starts with changes This year, the Montana Historical Society is making history
For 70 years, we’ve worked out of the same building across from the Montana State Capitol As you can imagine, we’ve grown during those decades, collecting art, artifacts, and materials that capture the Treasure State’s history
Recently, we moved offsite while a hive of construction workers upgrade our grand old building’s plumbing, heating, and cooling systems To protect our priceless collections, we’ve packed and stored them in a safe location
That means we won’t be open to the public in 2023 and 2024 I won’t lie That hurts a lot
But wait! Along with the renovations, we are constructing a 66,000-squarefoot addition to better serve our faithful supporters The new Montana Heritage Center will feature world-class exhibits that tell Montana’s stories It will include a new Homeland Gallery, an expanded Charles M Russell Gallery, an event center, a café, and a Museum Store
We will have classrooms where students can dig into Montana history, a sensory garden, and enhanced access for differently abled visitors We will have 450 parking spaces, including room for RVs, buses, and charging stations for electric vehicles
I invite you to continue to visit the Original Governor’s Mansion in Helena, at 304 No Ewing St, for a tour of days past
I also encourage you to check out our online offerings, to search digitized newspapers, explore artifacts, read digitized books and letters, and browse through photographs We are online at mthsmtgov or call us at 406/444-2694 for help finding what you need
Change is difficult We will miss seeing your smiling faces as you discover the secrets of Montana’s past But rest assured You will be amazed when we open our doors in 2025
MOLLY KRUCKENBERG Director, Montana Historical Society

MONTANA’S CULTURAL TREASURES 2023 119
MONTANA’S LITERARY TREASURES
MISSOULIAN CULTURAL TREASURES 2023
Perma Red: byDebraMagpieEarling
Debra Magpie Earling’s powerful classic novel is available again in this new edition On the Flathead Indian Reservation, summer is ending, and Louise White Elk is determined to forge her own path Raised by her Grandmother Magpie after the death of her mother, Louise and her younger sister have grown up into the harsh social and physical landscape of western Montana in the 1940s, where Native people endure boarding schools and life far from home As she approaches adulthood, Louise hopes to create an independent life for herself and an improved future for her family—but three persistent men have other plans
The River You Touch: MakingaLifeonMovingWaterbyChris Dombrowski
Dombrowski begins his new book with a question as timely as it is profound: “What does a meaningful, mindful, sustainable inhabitance on this small planet look like in the anthropocene?”
He answers this fundamental question by listening lovingly to rivers and the land they pulse through in his adopted home of Montana Transplants from the post-industrial Midwest, he and his partner, Mary, assemble a life based precariously on her income as a schoolteacher, his as a poet and fly-fishing guide Their young family circles a community of friends—river-rafting guides and conservationists, climbers and wildlife biologists—who seek to cultivate a way of living in place that moves beyond the mythologized West of appropriation and extraction Spending time in wild places with their children, he learns that their youthful sense of wonder at the beauty and connectivity of the more-than-human world is not naivete to be shed, but rather wisdom most of us lose along the way—wisdom that is essential for the possibility of transformation
Siksikaitsitapi: StoriesoftheBlackfootPeoplebyPayneMany Guns,CrystalManyFingers,AlaynaManyGuns
A collective of Blackfoot authors share their stories that come both from legend and from their personal experiences, with many of the stories translated into English from the Blackfoot language The book is illustrated with beautiful, full-colour pictures and photos, which help convey the inspiring stories of Blackfoot traditional and contemporary traditions and cultures The Blackfoot Confederacy is made up of the Siksika, Kainai, Piikani, and Amskapi Piikuni Nations of Southern Alberta and Montana
This America Of Ours: Bernard and Avis DeVoto and the ForgottenFighttoSavetheWildbyNateSchweber
The untold story of one history-making marriage and the dramatic fight to defend American wilderness from McCarthyism’s menace
In late-1940s America, few writers commanded attention like Bernard DeVoto Alongside his brilliant wife and editor, Avis, DeVoto was a firebrand of American liberty, free speech, and perhaps our greatest national treasure: public lands But when a corrupt band of lawmakers, led by Senator Pat McCarran, sought to quietly cede millions of acres of national parks and other western lands to logging, mining, and private industry, the DeVotos entered the fight of their lives

Breathless: TheScientificRacetoDefeataDeadlyVirusbyDavid Quammen
Breathless is the story of SARS-CoV-2 and its fierce journey through the human population, as seen by the scientists who study its origin, its ever-changing nature, and its capacity to kill us. David Quammen expertly shows how strange new viruses emerge from animals into humans as we disrupt wild ecosystems, and how those viruses adapt to their human hosts, sometimes causing global catastrophe. He explains why this coronavirus will probably be a “forever virus,” destined to circulate among humans and bedevil us endlessly, in one variant form or another. As scientists labor to catch it, comprehend it, and control it, with their high-tech tools and methods, the virus finds ways of escape.
The Art of Monte Dolack: Vision,Myth,MysterybyMonte Dolack
Join in this celebration of Dolack’s passion for nature, wildlife, and unspoiled landscapes, with more than 180 full-color pages, along with a compelling introductory essay by Todd Wilkinson and inights on Dolack’s work from contemporaries such as filmmaker Annick Smith, author Rick Bass, artist Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, and actor Jeff Bridges. The compilation also includes many of the artist’s own insights on art making. A native and lifelong resident of Montana, Monte Dolack grew up surrounded by the same sweeping vistas and big sky as artist Charlie Russell. Monte’s love for the diverse landscapes and wildlife of the west are evident in the images he creates and the commissions he undertakes. After studying art at Montana State University and The University of Montana, Monte opened his first design and painting studio in 1974 and began his full time career as an artist. Some of his best known earlier works wild animals occupying human homes comprise Dolack’s Invaders Series which explores the myths of the West and how we view our relationship with our environment.
