Julia Tai Music Director Praised by the Seattle Times as “poised yet passionate,” Julia Tai is one of today’s most dynamic young conductors on the international stage. Currently, she is the Music Director of Missoula Symphony Orchestra & Chorale, Philharmonia Northwest, and the Co-Artistic Director of the Seattle Modern Orchestra. Her career has led to acclaimed performances and rehearsals with the American Youth Symphony, Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra, Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic (Czech Republic), Brandenburger Symphoniker (Germany), Estonian National Youth Symphony (Estonia), New Symphony Orchestra (Bulgaria), Orquesta Filarmónica de la UNAM (Mexico), Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil Charlos Chávez (Mexico), and the Seattle Symphony. Ms Tai has established a reputation for her creative programming and community partnerships. She has increased the esteem of her orchestras by elevating their artistic output, commissioning new works by renowned composers, and serving diverse communities. In 2017, in collaboration with Finlandia Foundation, Philharmonia Northwest celebrated Finland’s centennial by presenting Finland 100 at Benaroya Hall, featuring three generations of Finnish composers. The concert was attended by Finland’s ambassador to the U.S. from Washington D.C. The orchestra has co-commissioned new works by PDQ Bach (Concerto for Simply Grand Piano and Orchestra), Mexican composer Osvaldo Mendoza (Three Mexican Portraits), Chinese-American composer Dorothy Chang (Gateways – Concerto for Erhu and Piano), and Sheila Silver (Being in Life – Concerto for French horn and Alpenhorn, 5 Tibetan singing bowls, and string orchestra). Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Ms Tai began her violin studies at age four and piano at eight. She received her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, where she was awarded “Outstanding Graduate” in 2004. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in orchestral conducting from the University of Washington.

JoHn riesen Guest Artist , Tenor Hailed as “every inch the hero in stature and voice” (Classical Voice North America), award-winning American tenor John Riesen is consistently impressing audiences with his “impassioned��and vibrant” voice (Opera Today)� Riesen’s growing career boasts a variety of roles in which he excels and includes significant work in opera, musical theatre, studio recording and concert� He has released two studio recording albums: What You’d Call a Dream (2019) and Christmas at Home (2020), and several singles including, “Autumn Leaves (2021)” “What a Wonderful World (2021)” and “Maria (from West Side Story) (2021)” that have reached well over 1 million streams on Spotify and Apple Music� John is also the head of Spotify promotion and PR for Emitha LLC, building an ecosystem for classical singers around the world to be heard on streaming services� In the covid-affected 2020-2021 season John performed concerts, live streams, and productions with several companies including Intermountain Opera Bozeman, Shades of Pink Charity Foundation, The FAR Conservatory in Detroit, and Las Vegas Opera� He returned to the stage in 2021 as Ralph Rackstraw in HMS Pinafore with Pensacola Opera, Martin in The Tender Land with The Hart School, Alfredo in La Traviata with the Pacific Symphony, and Younger Thompson in Glory Denied with Berkshire Opera Festival� In the 2021-2022 season, John returns to signature roles including Frederic in Pirates of Penzance with Utah Opera, Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi with On Site Opera, Chris in the world-premiere of Favorite Son by Grammy award winning songwriter Marcus Hummons, as well as his Carnegie Hall debut as tenor soloist in the Messiah with Musica Sacra under the baton of Kent Tritle� Riesen’s 2019-2020 season included his debut as Roméo in Roméo et Juliette as a guest artist with the Janiec Opera Company and his Michigan Opera Theater debut as Pirelli in Sweeney Todd as well as Younger Thompson in Glory Denied with Urban Arias, and Bill Calhoun in Kiss Me, Kate with Intermountain Opera Bozeman� Other honors include being a repeat Regional Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, 1st prize in the Harold Haugh Light Opera Competition, and 2nd prize in the Mary Jacobs Smith Singer of the Year Competition as well as awards from the Opera Columbus Cooper-Bing Competition and the Opera Birmingham Competition� Riesen has been privileged to sing for political figures, including President Barack Obama, President Jimmy Carter, District Judge Stephanie Kulp Seymour, and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg� He has sung the national anthem at several collegiate, semiprofessional and professional organizations, including the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park, the Pensacola Ice Flyers, MSU hockey/baseball and more� Before singing, John avidly pursued athletics and academics, and he attained all-region pitcher status in 2006 and 2007, as well as Academic All-State honors in 2008�

Susan derry Guest Artist, Soprano An accomplished and versatile actor and singer noted for her “soaring soprano” and “striking theatricality” (The New York Times), Susan Derry is at home in a wide range of roles. She made her Broadway debut in the Tony -winning revival of Wonderful Town and performed the role of Christine in The Phantom of the Opera in Hamburg, Germany with the Neue Flora Theater. She garnered critical acclaim for her recent portrayal of Francesca Johnson in The Bridges of Madison County at Keegan Theatre in Washington DC; the Washington Post proclaimed” the ace this staging is Susan Derry “and Broadway World called it the role of her career. Susan sang Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady with the Utah Symphony Orchestra opposite the late Peter Scolari as Professor Henry Higgins and recorded “Singing,” a song cycle by Gerald Ginsburg, based on the poetry of Langston Hughes in collaboration with pianist Paul Lincoln. She also made her Off-Off Broadway debut in The Shrill Collective’s world premiere of Megan Bussiere’s A Period Piece as Sam; the play was a finalist for the 2019 O’Neill National Playwrights Conference Prize. Other theatrical career highlights include Marian in The Music Man; Kate/Lilli in Kiss Me Kate; Desdemona in Othello; Fiona in Brigadoon; Meg in Crimes of the Heart; Helen in Saturday Night; Agnes in I Do! I Do!; Betty Schaeffer in Sunset Boulevard; Betty in White Christmas, and Gwendolen in The Importance of Being Earnest. Susan has professional experience in opera, as well, premiering the role of Olivia in Gary Glickmans’ adaptation of Twelfth Night with American Opera Projects and singing Jessica in the American premiere of Reynaldo Hahn’s The Merchant of Venice with Portland Opera. Susan was the centerpiece of the Bold New Works series in Virginia, an initiative to create world-premiere musicals; her performance in the first piece, a new version of The Turn of the Screw, was hailed as “brilliant.” Since then, she has earned accolades as Mary Shelley in Monsters of the Villa Diodati; as a daughter struggling with her mother’s decline from Alzheimer’s in Kaleidoscope and as a hard-edged single mother in Witch, based on the #MeToo movement. All four works feature Susan prominently on the cast albums. In a concert setting, Susan headlined as a guest soloist at Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops on an evening of Frank Loesser’s music under the direction of Rob Fisher and the late, great Skitch Henderson. She also has the esteemed honor of appearing in the Encores! Series at New York City Center eleven times. Additionally, she has performed with the New York Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall’s Community Sings series, the Lawton Symphony, the Palm Beach Orchestra, in Kennedy Center galas, Sondheim Award galas, and with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in Leonard Bernstein’s Mass conducted by Marin Alsop. Solo work includes three one-woman evenings: It’s Got to Be Love, about finding happiness among the high notes, I Wish It So, a holiday evening, and Days and Dazed, a look at how anything can happen in the busy middle of your life. A champion of new works, Susan Derry co-founded Urban Arias, DC’s contemporary opera company, in 2009 and continues to amplify their message of excellence and accessibility in DC and beyond by serving as Board President. Susan earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Northwestern University and a Master of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music. She serves as an adjunct professor of voice at American University and has a thriving private studio. She lives in the DCarea with her husband.

arielle nacHtigal Guest Artist, Soprano A true Montana girl at heart, Soprano Arielle Nachtigal has traveled far and wide to sing amongst the mountains and pursue her passion for opera, operetta, and musical theater� After completing her undergraduate degree at the University of Montana’s School of Music, she received her Master of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music in Vocal Performance and Literature� There, she performed in master classes for Renee Fleming, Nicole Cabell, Federico Sacchi, and Benton Hess� She has performed the title role in Puccini’s Suor Angelica, Carmela in Mese mariano, Emily in Ned Rorem’s Our Town, and Countess Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro� She spent one summer in Urbania, Italy to study the Italian language and opera, then two summers championing operetta and golden age musicals with the Ohio Light Opera� Closer to home, she has graced the stage as La Ciesca in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and the Sour Kangaroo in Seussical the Musical� For musical theater, she has music directed for the Bigfork Summer Playhouse, produced and performed in Jason Robert Brown’s Songs for a New World, and taught private voice lessons for Missoula Children’s Theater’s Next Step Prep� Recently, she music directed You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Footloose Jr., Winnie the Pooh Jr., and co-music directed and performed in Into the Woods at the Missoula Children’s Theatre and Missoula Community Theatre�

Executive Director’s Message Jo May Salonen Welcome to a concert that celebrates a beginning and an end! We begin by performing our first ever Broadway concert, in collaboration with Black Tie Broadway. We’re excited to have the orchestra share the stage with our talented guest artists as they perform your Broadway favorites! We plan to make this an annual tradition and are thrilled to have you join us for My Fair Broadway. This weekend also marks the end of our 2021-2022 concert season and we are grateful that you stuck with us along the way. The pandemic threw a couple of curveballs, but we all made it through and look forward to next season. Thank you for being patient and kind, supportive and generous, and true supporters of the Missoula Symphony Orchestra and our Music Director, Julia Tai. Season tickets for next season go on sale July 1st and you won’t want to miss the concerts! Our season opener features a dynamic duet performance with famed concert violinist, Robert McDuffie joined by his lovely sister, Margery Whatley – now a faculty member of the UM School of Music. Robert McDuffie is one of the top violin soloists in the world and we are so excited to have him share our stage. Ms. Tai has programmed an exciting season featuring works by Mendelssohn, Sibelius, John Williams, and the exciting world premiere of a percussion concerto plus, much more! Additionally, the Chorale will join us for Holiday Pops! and perform in April, singing the beautiful Dona Nobis Pacem by Ralph Vaughan Williams. President’s Message Deborah Stapley-Graham Welcome to My Fair Broadway! There’s a bright, golden haze on the meadow and June is busting out all over� What a wonderful concert to finish out our 2021-2022 season� This past season has been filled with rich experiences of familiar and new music� It has been a treat to hear classics by Beethoven and Saint-Saens side by side with music by contemporary composers such as Jessie Montgomery and Missy Mazzoli� The season’s repertoire has been a well-balanced offering of comfort and adventure� I offer a hearty Thank You to our Music Director, Julia Tai, for planning a wonderful musical program and for finding exceptional guest artists to perform with our Symphony� As I reflect on the past season, I’m grateful for the normalcy that is slowly returning to our everyday lives� I’m in awe of our musicians who exhibited sheer dedication last season by continuing to rehearse and perform even as Covid variants emerged unexpectedly, fostering confusion and sometimes, fear� I extend my gratitude to our musicians, chorale members, and to both Julia Tai and Dean Peterson for having navigated those unknown waters and for exercising flexibility and ingenuity in finding ways to rehearse and perform safely� Thank you for bringing us an incredible series of concerts! Missoula Symphony Association

PRESENTED BY THE MISSOULA SYMPHONY ASSOCIATION For nearly 40 years, Missoula has hosted the Montana Suzuki Institute each summer. This week-long event offers students an intensive yet fun musical experience. Approved and guided by the principles of the Suzuki Association of the Americas, the Institute also trains and develops teachers in the Suzuki method. These combined activities promote musical and personal growth in young musicians, families, and communities. To further this mission, the Missoula Symphony Association recently announced the Lamar Blum Scholarship, in honor of the director who led MSI from 2005 through 2019. This scholarship will be awarded annually to a deserving student who would benefit from financial assistance to attend the Institute. Additionally, our local Suzuki teachers offer instruction and performance opportunities all year long, and the MSA is proud to support this MizZuki program!
