Countdown

Jessi + Nelli Photography

16

Brides&Grooms 2015

Countdown to

“i do”

10–12 Months to Go  Announce your engagement in the Missoulian and online.  Work out your budget and establish your top priorities— where to save/where to splurge.  Find Ideas. Start browsing Brides & Grooms, Pinterest, bridal blogs and magazines to identify your wedding style and color palette.  Sign up for Pinterest and create wedding style/idea boards. Start pinning!  Compile your preliminary guest list to get your guest count.  Choose your wedding party—who do you want by your side at the altar? • Maid of Honor • Bridesmaids • Best Man • Groomsmen • Flower girl • Ring Bearer  Find a venue for your ceremony and reception, and reserve your date.  Now that you have a date, tell everyone to save it! For destination weddings or weddings around a holiday, consider sending out Save-the-Date cards or emails.  Launch your own wedding website, and let your invitees know about it.  Find a Dress and begin assembling the perfect accessories.  Establish a fitness routine and skin care/beauty routine.  Find a Vendor. Assemble an all-star vendor team. When you hire a vendor get all of the details in writing! We’d start with: • Caterer • Photographer / Videographer • Officiant  Already feeling overwhelmed? Consider hiring a Wedding Planner.  Take engagement photos.  Another way to minimize stress: Start dreaming up your honeymoon…!

BridesandGroomsmt.com

17

6-9 Months to Go  Continue researching, interviewing and booking vendors.  Decide on arrangements with your Floral Designer.  Do a tasting and choose your wedding cake with your Cake Designer.  Hire the DJ/Entertainment for your ceremony, cocktail hour and reception.  Discuss the style and wording of your wedding invitations with a Stationer.  Create your gift registry (and don’t forget to update your wedding website!).  Arrange hotel room blocks for out-of-town guests and book your own suite for the wedding night.  Shop for bridesmaid/flower girl dresses.  Arrange and book any necessary transportation.  Go over bridal shower/bachelorette details and the guest list with the person(s) hosting your party.

3-5 Months to Go  Book the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner location(s). If you’re including entertainment or specialty details like a groom’s cake, now’s the time to lock in these elements.  Put together your rehearsal dinner guest list.  Make childcare arrangements for your guests’ kids.  Reserve all necessary party rentals and linens.  Order wedding favors for your guests.  Shop for and reserve men’s formal wear.  Concentrate on finalizing the: • Guest list. Get everyone’s mailing address. • Invitation wording. Confirm your invitation text with the Stationer, and consider additional stationery (programs, menu cards, place cards, thank-you cards, etc.). Schedule a pickup date for your invites. • Ceremony readings and vows. • Menu, beverage and catering details. • Timeline of the reception formalities.  Do a Makeup & Hair trial and book your stylists.  Shop for and purchase your wedding rings.  Finalize honeymoon plans and obtain all necessary documents (are you sure your passports are up to date?).

6-8 weeks to Go  You’re getting close…. Mail out those invitations! Have a game plan for recording the RSVPs and meal choices.  Create your wedding hashtag so you can include your unique hashtag in your invites.  Touch base with your vendors to confirm date, deposits and details.  Start researching marriage license requirements and name-change paperwork.  Begin your dress fittings. Be sure to buy the appropriate undergarments beforehand.  So you think you can’t dance? Consider taking a dance lesson with your fiancé—a good way to break in your bridal shoes!  Give the wedding party a nudge—make sure they’ve ordered all necessary attire.  Write thank-you cards for shower gifts and any early wedding gifts received.

3-5 weeks to Go  Send out rehearsal dinner invitations. If your get-together will be informal, feel free to send an Evite.  Finalize and confirm: • Wedding vows and readings with your Officiant. • Shot list with your Photographer/Videographer. • Song list for ceremony, cocktail hour and reception with your DJ and/or Band/Musicians. • Timeline for the reception and who’s giving the toasts. • Wedding night and honeymoon accommodations.  Obtain marriage license and complete name-change documents, if applicable.  Pick up your wedding rings and proofread any engraving!  If you’re the traditional type, do you have something old, new, borrowed and blue?  Purchase your guest book, toasting flutes, cake servers, unity candle, and all that good stuff.  Buy gifts (optional) for the wedding party and parents of the bride and groom.  Have your final dress fitting. Bring your shoes and accessories for the full impact.  Hunt down whoever hasn’t RSVP’d yet.  Submit your wedding announcement to the Missoulian.

1-2 weeks to Go  Give your caterer/venue the final guest count.  Arrange seating and create the seating chart and/or place cards.  Pick up your gown.  Confirm arrival times and finalize the wedding timeline with vendors and the wedding party—make sure your MOH has a copy, too.  Put together your own Bridal Emergency Kit.  Begin breaking in your wedding shoes if you haven’t already!  Speaking of emergencies: Check the weather report, and if things look iffy contact your venue to make sure a contingency plan is in place.  Start packing for your honeymoon.  In desperate need of a facial or massage? Now’s the time to squeeze one in.  Check your wedding hashtag to make sure no one else has used it.

the day before  Make sure all wedding-day items are laid out and ready to go! (Don’t forget the rings and marriage license!).  Figure out tips and final payments for vendors. Put them in clearly marked envelopes and give them to the Best Man or another person you trust to hand out at the reception.  Assign someone to pack up your gifts/belongings after the reception (Don’t forget the top tier of your cake!).  Thank your BFF for agreeing to return your groom’s tux and other rental items the day after the wedding.  Enjoy a mani-pedi.  Attend the rehearsal and dinner. Now’s the time to give out wedding party gifts.  Go to bed at a decent hour…you need your beauty sleep tonight.

here comes the bride!  Eat a good breakfast!  Allow yourself plenty of time to get ready.  Do the rounds at your wedding—greet everyone and thank them for coming.  Take a deep breath. Stop to appreciate your new spouse and the day that you spent so much time planning!  Soak in every incredible moment!

after the honeymoon  Write and send thank-you cards. Don’t procrastinate!  Complete your registry and exchange any unwanted or duplicate gifts.  Have your wedding dress cleaned and preserved by a reputable company.  Keep in touch with your Photographer/Videographer to work on albums, DVDs, etc.  Enjoy wedded bliss…

Eat, Drink,&

be married Story & photos by Sam & Elise Risho, Silk Road Restaurant and Catering

A

s the most popular style of service, a dinner buffet is an ideal way to stay within your budget while presenting a wide variety of amazing food at your wedding reception. First, and most crucial to planning your meal is to identify your vision and priorities. What is most important to you? Your guests are there to support you on your wedding day, so plan your menu with what you would like to enjoy on your special day. Your guests will most likely enjoy whatever you bring to the table. When choosing how many items to serve, first pick one or two carbohydrates like potatoes, rice or pasta. Next, choose one to three vegetables, and finally settle on your protein(s). The newest trend is to present several protein options on the buffet (in smaller ½ or 1/3 portion sizes), primarily to offer something for everyone’s palate. Wouldn’t you love to show up to a buffet with steak, chicken and salmon available? A crucial concept is to work with your caterer about how the food is going to look and taste on the plate. What are the colors incorporated into each menu item? How will the flavors taste together? Be sure to label the dishes on the buffet, or consider a printed menu on the table at each guest’s seat. Theme menus are an amazingly fun way to ensure all of the flavor profiles go well together, without distracting from each other. This is often referred to as how well the different flavors “marry” on the plate! Some fun themes may be Italian, Indian or Cajun, but the options are endless, and entirely up to you and your caterers abilities. Don’t forget your best friend who will take at least four portions of steak, leaving none for your other guests. Either plan to hire buffet servers to keep portions consistent, or begin the buffet with an announcement: “Take one piece and come back as many times as you want. Let’s get everyone through the line first.” Additionally, if you have a wide selection of buffet menu items, keep in mind you may need larger plates.

he traditional buffet does have a drawback: hungry guests waiting in line can lead to disaster. Ask your caterer for options to speed things up before you get in a bind. One option is to open up both sides of the buffet table, or have multiple buffet tables. If a line is flowing properly and well maintained, 50 people should be able to go through a single line in about 15-20 minutes. When your numbers increase by increments of 50, start adding more lines or tables. For example, for 200 people, think about having two buffet tables with both sides opened up with a total of four lines, getting everybody through as fast as possible. Mix it up! To add elegance while keeping costs down from a fully plated dinner, opt for a plated/served salad & bread course before the main dinner buffet. This allows for your guests to curb their hunger before heading to the buffet, and standing there hungry and overloading their plate. Orchestration is key for this style, so make sure your caterer is in charge: The tables served the salad course first will also

Brides&Grooms 2015

be first through the buffet line, and so forth. This allows for a steady flow of service, and not leaving your favorite Aunt May waiting too long for her turn at the buffet. Keep options available for those with dietary sensitivities too, but don’t let them overwhelm your decisions on menu. In your invitation, simply ask your guests to contact you well in advance for dietary restrictions, helping your caterer (and your guests) be prepared for the feast. Nobody wants to discuss it, but your budget should be discussed as soon as possible. While often cheaper than a plated dinner, buffets need less plateware, serviceware and less labor hours to get everyone fed. Sometimes your budget is decided for you, but never the less, identify your limits. Your caterer will be obliged to stay within your designated budget, as long as you are clear and concise. Have Fun: Remember, it’s your day! Work closely with your caterer to create the environment you want to see, feel (and taste!) Then, your only responsibility is to have fun and celebrate your wedding!

The New

wedding seasons By Laura Depta

S

ummer has long been the go-to wedding season, but it may be losing its luster. More and more, couples are trading in those warm June weekends for the crisp air of autumn or the beautiful lilacs of spring. According to the results of the 2014 American Wedding Study, the annual survey by BRIDES magazine, May is now the most popular month to get married, having surpassed June, which now is tied for second with September and October. Even winter slowly is gaining ground. According to The Knot.com’s 2013 Real Weddings Study, 7 percent of couples got married during the winter months in 2013, up from 5 percent in 2012. There are many factors that have contributed to this shift in trend, not the least of which are cost and availability. Over the course of summer’s long-standing popularity, venues became more challenging to nail down, and vendors became more expensive overall. Lisbeth Levine, co-author of “The Wedding Book” (Workman Publishing Co., 2008) warns that a summer wedding will cost you. “There is so much competition for 10 weekends, really,” Levine says. “You’re not going to have any room for negotiation. You’re going to be paying top dollar for any of the summer weekends.” Levine also points out that couples generally have to start planning summer weddings much farther in advance to get what they want in terms of venue, florist, photography and catering. In addition to the cost savings, sometimes an off-season wedding can mean better vendor availability. “By having your wedding in April instead of June, you’re much more likely to get your first choice of photographer and the venue,” explains Levine. “Having a wedding in one of the slower seasons lets you get your top choices in more categories.” Additionally, couples have to think about their guests and bridal parties. It’s important to choose a time when the most people are likely to be available and when hotels and travel won’t cost a fortune. “People are on such different schedules over the summer,” Levine says. “And I think hotel availability is tight and tends to be higher-priced for guests, depending on location.” Weather always is a factor, too, and different parts of the country have different considerations. Summer can be too hot and humid in some areas and beautiful in others. Spring can be cool and lovely, or it could bring those pesky April showers. -CTW Features

ome couples simply prefer particular themes that go with other seasons – the pastels of spring or the deep hues of fall, for example. Caili Helsper of Caili Helsper Photography in Chicago, says that May is her busiest month, followed closely by September and October. And although spring is busy, Helsper says that spring weddings are her favorite. “Everything is starting to get colorful but still has that softness to it,” Helsper says. “I tend to like muted tones and soft colors. The combination of soft, flowering trees and beige grasses turning green is my favorite backdrop for portraits.” The winter, although the weather can be dicey, does offer fantastic possibilities for theme weddings. “Winter weddings are not for the faint of heart, but they pay off every time,” Helsper says. “Some of my favorite bride and groom portraits have been taken in the middle of a light snowstorm.” But perhaps the biggest “new” season is fall. Tonya Evans, owner of Occasional Flowers in Herndon, Virginia, says that her bookings absolutely have indicated a change in seasonal preference. “October has become huge,” says Evans. “I think the advantage to the fall is hopefully you can still have that

Brides&Grooms 2015

outdoor wedding. There’s a lot of the foliage around here that’s changing that makes for a really beautiful outdoor wedding.” According to Evans, many fall floral themes are very popular, too. She says flowers like dahlias and ranunculus are extremely in demand, and they’re easily accessible in the fall. She also has noticed a general shift in aesthetic trends in the industry in general. “I don’t just see it around me. You look in wedding magazines and you see all these weddings that have all this birch and burlap, and it’s a rustic barn or an outdoor vineyard, and it just seems like it lends itself to that time of the year,” Evans says. Budget, vendor availability and seasonal themes all play a role in the decision of when to get married. But perhaps most important is a general desire of couples to really make their wedding unique and reflective of their style. “I think that a lot of couples are looking at wedding planning as an opportunity to share with their guests what makes them unique, and that includes the time of year that they wed,” Helsper says. “Just as your invites and florals help tell your story, I think that the season sets the tone for all the details to fall in line.”

Buyer

beware by Deborah Stebbins of Rococo Bridal

W

eddings can be expensive and it’s tempting to cut cost were you can, but buyer beware. There are many scam websites designed to steal your hard earned money. “The dress was a complete nightmare!” says Missoula bride Hillary. “I received a horrible thrown together dress made for someone eight feet tall, with upside down and backwards shoulders. The beading doesn’t match and the belt is ivory on a white dress.” Hillary’s story is not unique. Local shops see brides at least once a week with similar stories. The brides tried to save some time and money by buying online, all they got was trouble. There are more than 7000 scam websites targeting US brides. The sites are experts at misleading shoppers. They show the original designer photos, they claim to be selling at wholesale, they claim to be authorized dealers, and they claim you will love your gown. They lie. The dresses are not the 5Ever Photography quality gowns shown in their stolen photos; their dresses are cheap copies. They might have a vague resemblance to the original designer gowns, but that’s as far as it goes. The beading is cheep, the fabric is of costume quality, and they lack all the inner structure of a quality gown.

Designer gown are made of high quality materials and with alterations in mind. You can customize your dress for the perfect fit. Counterfeits are not constructed the same at all. “I’ve seen some horrible internet dresses” says Kathy Bruch of Perfect Alterations. “The awful things are simply made wrong. More often than not, they’re impossible fix and the bride has to buy a new dress.” Many times the dress will not even arrive. “Last year, I helped several girls find new dresses”, says Amanda Coddington from Rococo Bridal. “They had all bought online, and none had received their dresses. A couple girls had even had their debit card numbers stolen; the sites were set up just to steal card numbers.” If, your cheaply made dress does arrive, it will be stuffed in a mail envelope: no tissue paper, no box. Anywhere the envelope ripped; there will be a stain on the dress. “We were warned about buying a gown online,” recalls local groom Zach. “We thought the store was just trying to scare us to make a sale. We found out they were not! The dress we got was really bad, Alicia was crying. We ended up getting a new dress from Rococo.” Don’t be scammed. Remember, when it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Hashtag

bliss

T

here are some brides & grooms who ask guests to completely unplug at their wedding and some who ask guests to go all out with photo taking and sharing. Here are some tips if you are planning to incorporate a hashtag into your special day.

Hashtag Do’s: • Be very specific so all your guests

know which hashtag to use. • Make it unique: do a test search for the #hashtag you want to use. Make sure nobody else is using it - you want your hashtag to be unique! • Make it easy to remember so your guests don’t get it wrong. • Add a wedding word like “hitch”, “love”, “happilyever” or “tietheknot” to appeal to your guests. • Make your hashtag humorous or a little bit bizarre, this will add to the appealing factor of your hashtag. Get creative and have fun with it!

Hashtag Don’ts: • Don’t add symbols, dashes or spaces.

A good hashtag only consists of alphabetic characters and numbers. • Don’t just use initials and dates. Weddings tend to have these in common. Personalize by adding your last name or something catchy. • Don’t use a long hashtag without capital letters to describe your wedding. It just doesn’t work!
