GRIZZLY GAME DAY / Grizzly Q&A
Jon Opperud
Opperud reflects on dream opportunity By SCOTT JOHNSON for the Missoulian
No. 74 Year: Sophomore Position: Left guard Height: 6-foot-7 Weight: 298 Hometown: Milwaukie, Ore.
Montana sophomore Jon Opperud recently found himself with an opportunity to do the unthinkable for offensive linemen: catch a pass and score a touchdown. The left guard displayed soft hands, corralling an errant pass, but came up a bit short in his quest for the end zone. “It was a screen play,” Opperud said of the fourth quarter play in the Grizzlies’ 38-0 season opening victory Sept. 5 over Western State. “I didn’t get out fast enough. (Receiver) Ty Palmer tipped it and I caught it. There was no one in front of me. I took about three steps and fell down. I was so excited.” The excitement was all for naught as referees called illegal touching on the play and penalized the Griz five yards. With the exception of special formations, offensive linemen are ineligible to catch passes unless a defender touches the ball first. The Grizzlies eventually scored a touchdown on a Peter Nguyen 9yard run. Opperud, who fell down at the 14yard line after catching the deflection at the 17, is unsure what would’ve happened if he would’ve stayed upright and the play was legal. “I think I had one guy chasing me,” Opperud said. “(Center) Alex Verlanic was right behind me so he might’ve been able to block him. I
don’t know if I would’ve been able to make it. It would’ve been awesome though.” Opperud, who was dubbed Oppie last year by J.D. Quinn and other upperclassmen on the offensive line, said his teammates had fun with the play during film session. “They said ‘Keep your feet for next time,’ ” he said. Q: You’re from Milwaukie, Ore. Is that near Portland, Ore.? A: Yeah, I’m like 10 minutes away from downtown Portland.
more fun winning. (Former offensive line) Coach (Pete) Kaligis was the one that recruited me; I really liked him too. Q: Who else recruited you? A: Oregon State was talking to me for a while, but they just offered a walk-on spot. Portland State offered me a scholarship after they had found out I had committed here. I was actually on my layover in Seattle on the trip back from Missoula.

A: I’ll have to check that out. Q: How many games did you play in last season? A: I played in three at the tackle position and the rest on special teams except the first Weber State game. I played tackle against Southern Utah, Northern Arizona and Northern Colorado. Q: When did you know that you might have a chance to see the field in your first year of college ball? A: Coach Kaligis just kind of pulled me aside one day in fall camp and said that I wasn’t going to redshirt. I was excited. Toward the end of the season I kind of wished I hadn’t because it means I’m only going to get three full seasons. It was a good experience. I got to travel with the team and get my feet wet. Both ways have their benefits. Q: Between you and me, as well as anyone else reading this, were you at all nervous when you were sent into a game at Montana for the first time? A: I was really nervous. I didn’t know what to expect. It was the fourth quarter (against Southern Utah). I know I had jitters going in. See OPPERUD, Page G8

Portland State junior Drew Hubel passed for 370 yards and four touchdowns last week. He’s a three-year starter who seems to have PSU’s complex passing attack figured out. I’m not convinced the Grizzlies have this position figured out yet. Are you? The Vikings are pretty good at pass blocking. Montana used to be known for its linemen leading the way down field on its feared “Grizzly screen” plays. I’m hoping I’ll see at least one “Grizzly screen” this weekend.

PSU’s Lavonte Kirven caught a 91-yard touchdown last week, only to be outdone by teammate Aaron Woods, who hauled in a 96-yard score. The sad part is, neither guy leads the league in receiving yards per game. That honor belongs to another PSU receiver, Ray Fry.

The Vikings’ passing attack is known to stretch the field. That means the Griz will need every inch of 6-foot-3 cornerback Trumaine Johnson, who now has six INTs in 12 games with the Maroon and Silver.
Frosh kicker Zach Brown was the Big Sky special teams player of the week after booting a 52-yard field last Saturday. UM’s Brody McKnight has hit two FGs this year at a combined distance of 54 yards. That’s almost two field goals in one for Brown.
The Jerry Glanville experiment is in its third year at Portland State and so far his biggest victory – league or otherwise – is a 28-21 win over Eastern Washington two years ago. Montana seems ripe for the picking, but will the Man in Black bite? Not in Bobby Hauck’s house.

as we can,” Germer said. “We want to get him to the second level and let him work his magic. There will be times when we make him look good, and times when he will make us look like we know what we are doing.” Glenn’s time at Wyoming started off well enough as he led the Cowboys to a winning record and a bowl game his first season at the helm. But it was a rocky road from there. Germer has been to two national title games, in 2000 and 2001. He has a ring from that 2001 season, and it was one of the most influential components in his decision to come home to the Treasure State. “The chance to play for a championship is as good as it gets, so without a doubt, I’m happy to be back,” Germer said.
him. I was a junior. Q: I think you were going to mention some other players in your league you went up against before I interrupted you. A: I also played against Brad Tinsley, who is at Vanderbilt, and Sam Schafer, who is at Air Force. I knew which route I wanted to go. I probably could’ve played at a small school if I wanted. Q: How much do you weigh these days? A: 298 lbs. I lost about 5-6 pounds from fall camp. Q: What’s a typical calorie intake for a 300-pound football player? What is a typical breakfast, lunch and dinner for you? A: For breakfast I’ll have a couple bowls of cereal or I’ll make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I usually don’t eat much in the morning. For lunch I’ll make a couple of ham sandwiches. For dinner either I’ll come home and make something or have a Subway. I might go out for dinner too. It just depends on how I feel. I really don’t count calories though. Q: Has the coaching staff given you any direction on your diet or told you to be in a certain range with weight? A: In the summer they asked what I was weighing. I was about 308 or 309. I was able to keep it on because I was lifting so much. They didn’t really tell me to be at a
certain weight. When I came into fall camp at 305 they said that was a good weight. It’s tougher to keep on when I’m not lifting as much because we’re practicing now. Q: Have you always been a bigger guy growing up or did you have a big growth spurt and weight gain one year? A: I’ve always been a bigger kid. I was 6-3, 235 pounds when I entered high school. I’ve always been big. Q: What was the atmosphere like in Chattanooga, Tenn., for the national championship game? A: There was a lot of excitement. The team was pretty excited before pre-game. The crowd was really into it. There was a pretty good atmosphere until it got down to the wire. Q: What’s getting a lot of play on your iPod or CD player? A: The only time I listen to my iPod is during pre-game. Just a lot of rock. It’s on shuffle. I don’t really have a particular artist that I’m listening to. Q: Worst movie you saw in theater? A: Probably “Vantage Point.” Q: Favorite thing to do when you’re not concentrating on football? A: I like to hang out with my friends. This summer my roommates just hung out and barbequed. It’s nice to get off my feet, relax and watch TV.
GETTING THERE Parking is at a premium on Grizzly game days, so UM officials are encouraging fans to catch the Grizzly Shuttle to games. It is free from the downtown parking garages (Central Park and the Bank Street Structure), and costs just $2 from the East Broadway and South Campus lots (and Griz cards get fans on for free). The following businesses also provide shuttles: Boomer’s; Curley’s Broiler; Diamond Jim’s at Mount and Russell; The Elbow Room; High Country in Stevensville; Hooter’s; Joker’s Wild; Liberty Lanes; Lucky Strike Casino; Mullan Station; Paradise Falls; Red’s Bar; Reno Casino; Rowdy’s Cabin; Sean Kelly’s Stone of Accord; and the Silver Slipper.
PARKING Season parking passes have all but been sold out, leaving only single-game parking at $5 for Lots A, B, C, D, E,and F, and at $10 for Lot R (the parking garage). Lot R has shuttles for the elderly and disabled beginning 90 minutes before kickoff. Lots A-F range from the top of Campus Drive above the University Center, south to the top of Beckwith Avenue. There is free parking as space allows in front of the Gallagher Business building (S), next to Jesse Hall (K and K1), next to Knowles Hall (J), in the Lommasson Center lot and the lots behind Pantzer Hall and the Health Sciences Building (H and G). Also, buses run from the lots at South Campus and East Broadway ($2 per person, but free if you have a Griz card) as well as from downtown (free). Missoulian

And before she would kill the griz she would go sit at that waterfall. “So I went over there and I sat there. And … what a place. You could feel the enchantment, you could feel the spirit.” The falls are sometimes called “Trick Falls” because during spring runoff, water pours from the top and hides a separate falls issuing from a cave underneath. Running Eagle made her vision quest there before she became a Blackfoot warrior, and went on several raids against opposing tribes before dying in battle in 1860. In my research I couldn’t find any references to killing grizzlies, but I wasn’t going to let that get in the way of a good
Portland State football coach Jerry Glanville may know more about Montana than many Montanans, and he gave a little history lesson Wednesday over the phone. It had to do with a trip to the Treasure State this past summer, for some rest and relaxation and perhaps a little inspiration. Glanville, the third-year coach at PSU, wants his Vikings to start climbing the Big Sky Conference ladder, and so he desperately wants to beat Montana Saturday afternoon inside WashingtonGrizzly Stadium. He’s not above trying a little mysticism to get the job done. “I slept in a town called Whitefish this summer, but I drove over to a little town

story. And anyway, you get Glanville’s point. “I’m not a Blackfoot Indian, so I don’t know whether they’ll feed me the message they gave Running Eagle,” he said. “But what a great summer. The griz feared Running Eagle, who was a woman! So I tried to get inspiration from her.” The three of us chasing Michael Heinbach in the picks – did I really take Sac State over Cal Poly? – could use similar motivation. Yet the closest I’ve been to a vision quest lately is sitting on the berm at McCormick Park. Big Sky play is fast approaching, so that’ll have to do.

fondness for certain watering holes and the overall fanaticism of Griz Nation keep me from ever picking against the Griz in a Big Sky game. But if I did, this might be the week.
